Ending women’s cancers one step at a time BY KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com
In grade 6, Katie Heggie and Jaimie Anderson were the best of friends. Heggie fondly remembers how they used to canoe back and forth across the river to visit each other. While they went their separate ways after high school, the two girls remained friends. But tragedy struck in January this year when Anderson, who was 23 years old, died from a form of cervical cancer. “It was very hard. It was a big loss for everyone,” said Heggie. “Jaimie fought so hard and was young and healthy. But cancer takes over and there’s nothing you can do.” That’s why Heggie got involved in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, which is a 60-kilometre walkathon organized by Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation that will be taking place in Ottawa on June 5 and 6. “I always thought about doing something like this, but there was never that push, and this sort of brought it all home for me,” said Heggie. “It made me really want to do something and make a difference if I can.” Heggie is on Bodhi Tree Yoga’s Yogini’s team – one of four teams that will represent the Kemptville area on the weekend.
K. Wallace/Advance staff
Katie Heggie of Bodhi Tree Yoga’s team, the Yoginis, will be participating in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers on June 5 and 6. Bodhi Tree Yoga has had a number of fundraisers and are also selling jewelry and yoga gear to raise money for their team. Linda Bell of the Kemptville District Hospital said that 75 per cent of the funds raised by local teams will go to equip the hospital’s new mammography suite, which will cost $750,000. Bell said this year’s goal for the teams is to raise $100,000 so $75,000 of that would go to offer mammography services. The Country Boobkins alone have raised more than $41,000 and were ranked number five in
fundraising overall. Bell said the response from the entire community has been great, with participants holding successful garage sales and other events. “There seem to be a lot of women walking around town, at all hours of the day, and every day of the week,” said Bell, who is also on the Kemptville District Hospital’s Bust Buddies team. “The foundation is so happy
that women and men in community are stepping up.” According to the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation, breast cancer rates are higher in Lanark, North Leeds, North Grenville and Ottawa West than in Ontario women overall. The foundation adds that the hospital would need the mammography suite by 2011 see GROUPS page 7

A sexual attack on an Ottawa Public Library staff member in December of 2009, at an Ottawa South library has resulted in the conviction of a young offender and may create pressure on the library’s 2010 budget regarding security and safety. A young man, was
charged with ten different crimes including sexual assault and uttering death threats. He was charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and cannot be named. After the incident, which proved to be the last call for Ottawa Police Eric Czapnik who had responded to the call and was later killed
in a separate crime, the assailant was picked up by police in Hawkesbury. This past week the youth pleaded guilty to the charges. The court has ordered a sexual assessment for the youth as well as a psychiatric examination. He will be back in court at the end of June. AS a result of the attack, the Ottawa

Public Library expedited their plan to beef up security for library staff. In December of 2009, the OPL had already identified a need to look at their security. A report prepared for the Ottawa Library Board in January 2010 stated, “On December 28, 2009 an incident occurred in one of OPL’s branches that resulted in the need to escalate this requirement and strengthen measures that would address facility safety ad security requirements.” On December 9, the 2010 OPL budget was given to Ottawa City Council. The library’s net operating budget came in at $35.16 million. The library requested another $400,000 to be added to their budget to address security and safety issues. Ottawa councillors voted to approve the Library’s original budget which left security and safety requests to be dealt with later. After, $40,000 was donated from the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association, reducing their $400,000 request to $360,000 the library set out to find the extra money. The library board has been working on ways cut back to come
up with the $360,000. The library board, received a report dated March 8, 2010 that detailed various ways to come up with the $360,000 stated: “It is recommended that the board approve the expenditure strategy as outlined in this report. Should the board not approve this interim plan it will be necessary to return to council with a request to increase the library’s base budget.” The plan to find the $360,000 includes deferring purchasing collections to later in the year, delay filling a bilingual services position until mid-year, fill a position in the library’s digital services, delay hiring for a position in AODA and Accessibility until mid-year, and harmonizing the Sunday schedule for community branches with the Main and District Sunday schedule, as well as not having Sunday hours in July and August. Filling the digital services position, according to the report, would enable the library to address the demand for online services, increase the issuing of overdue notices through email and promote an increase of self check out-units.

St. Michael High School in Kemptville quietly celebrated its first decade on Friday evening, May 21. The Catholic high school started out in 1999 with a staff of 25 and 264 students. Today, 10 years later, the school has 75 teachers and 859 students with plans to expand in the works. The school began with 16 classrooms and have now added 18 portables and two additional portables. Thanks to a $10.6 million energy conservation grant, the school will begin to build a 22-classroom, two-storey addition this summer. The construction is expected to be complete in September of 2011. The very first graduating class in 2002 was 30 students. The 2010 graduating class from the school will be 138 strong. St. Michael was recently given the honour of placing fourth out of more than 700 schools for academic excellence. Annette and Brian Larmour are parents of three children. Before the 10th anniversary got under way, they were leafing through year books enjoying the memories of their son’s time at the school. Dan Larmour is a graduate of St. Michael’s and has just graduated from Carleton University majoring in psychology and literature. In 1999, he was one of the first grade 7 students from Holy Cross to attend the new school. “He was in the first graduating class,” remembers mom, Annette. Annette and Brian have two other children but they had attended St. Marks near Manotick. When they were going to high school, St. Michael was not completed. “It is very

UPCOMING MEETINGS exciting to have a Catholic high school in your community,” said both parents. “It was nice to be able to watch the school go from an idea to a reality,” said Annette. “They have taken good care of our children.” Dan had just finished playing an alumni volleyball game at the school. “Six years went by too fast,” he said, remembering all of the fun and friends he enjoyed at St. Michael’s. “I have 30 to 40 friends who I have kept in touch with.” Visitors at the celebration said that their experience at the school was a good one. “Every student has an opportunity to get involved in something,” Annette said. Dan added that the teachers helped to get students ready for their next step into university. The school’s principal, Donna Koekkoek, began the formal ceremonies. She began by telling her audience of the years that have past and the accomplishments the school and students have achieved. “These years have, in many ways, provided us with opportunities for growth and change,” she said. The principal pointed out that despite all of the changes confronting teachers and students in the last decade, one issue at the school that had not changed was the concept of faith. “At St. Mike’s we have always had a strong faith tradition,” she said. “At St. Mike’s we continue to live and teach the gospel values,” she added. “I could mention our high standards and expectations for conduct and achievement, our dedicated staff, our committed students, our amazing Mustang pride, these too have remained the same.”

The VegStock Festival will officially kick off the season of the Kemptville Farmers’ Market. Whether it is music you are after, fine food or a whimsical cup of tea at Butler’s Pantry you can find it all at the festival. Part of the proceeds from the tea as well as a giant yard sale in the O’Farrell’s Financial parking lot will go to the Room to Read Campaign for the new North Grenville Public Library. The entire length of Prescott Street will be turned over to the Dandelion Festival so come on out and enjoy.
It has been a busy week. A scientist has managed to go where no one has ever gone before and created, according to the rather liberal definitions of life these days, an actual example of artificial life. It is all rather exciting and in the long run might prove to be the long awaited for door opening that science has been longing for. At the same time that life is being created in a test tube, the Montreal Canadians are packing up their hockey equipment and getting ready to start their summer holidays. Of course, the Stanley Cup playoffs and the fortunes of Les Habs are not in any way to be confused with artificial life stories, but the team did have an interesting and entertaining run. Airlines in and around Europe are still trying to talk themselves into believing that the volcanic ash they have floating above their skies will go away sooner than later. The trouble is that if an airplane happens to have the bad luck of running into the cloud of volcanic ash, there will be an unforgivable hole put in the bottom line of the airline who may have said, everything is fine - let’s fly. By the way, the volcano in question has demonstrated how irresponsible mother nature can be at times. The pollution from the volcano will, in the end, undo much of what we were trying to accomplish every time we shelled out that $35 for our e-tests. Don’t forget all of those plastic bags that were never used and all the trees that were not cut down. Added to that is the amazing amount of oil that will, for years to come, pollute the Gulf of Mexico. Mankind can take credit for that disaster. Who would have thought that while we were all being patient about saving the planet one plastic bag at a time, mother nature was getting ready to pull the rug out from under us. Unlike the Stanley Cup, a bouncing puck or two, and some bacteria that may be thinking about us right now, there is not all that much any of us can do when the earth calls for a time out. There has to be a lesson in all of that.

OPINION
You can’t fight the inevitable It’s a natural reaction for people to worry when change is looming. Change is unknown – which is something we all naturally fear. Just recently I spent a Friday night at the National Arts Centre, watching a fabulous performance of composer Irving Berlin’s work. While the orchestra, singers and narrators were remarkable, a feeling of sadness came over me. It hit me at intermission, when a lady - quite a few years older - turned to me and said “It’s so nice to see young people here.” At that moment I froze and look around, and realized I was the youngest person in the theatre. I went for a glass of wine afterwards at a nearby restaurant with my boyfriend, who could tell I was upset about something. I was sad because year ago I was fresh out of school, and still led the “student life.” I used to start the night at 11 o’clock on a Friday, but now I’m in bed by that time. It was a moment of realization that my life was changing. Not only was I bothered by the fact that I never went
KRISTY WALLACE out the way I used to – I just didn’t have a desire to do it anymore. I had gotten up at 6 a.m., worked all day, and now it was late at night – it was time to go to bed! I couldn’t resist the change happening in my life, or the fact that I was growing up. While I felt sad that my life was changing, I also suddenly realized I was okay with all of it. Everybody grows up – some later than others – but no matter how long it takes, change is inevitable. And it continues to be unavoidable as we age – my parents, for instance, have sure calmed down a lot now that they have an empty nest. When we look at Kemptville, we see the changes happening right before our eyes. understandable for those who have been here for a long time to become upset or fearful. Many are worried about how the changes will affect their local businesses. Others are worried about the area losing its beautiful rural feel as more young urban couples move into the area and condominiums and suburban residential areas are being mapped out. But just like our own lives, Kemptville is evolving and in many ways “growing up.” Many are trying to resist the change while others are embracing it. Just like how we grow up, or change stages in our life, its okay to feel sad or fearful about it – we don’t know what’s going to happen next, or the impact it will have. Speaking as someone whose life is going through a total transition, the only way to handle change is to accept it and try and make the best of it. Accepting something new is easier said than done. But in the end, change is always inevitable - whether its results are positive or negative.

Campaign launched at Winchester gala KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com
While the weather was getting warmer in mid May, the Winchester arena was heating up with its annual gala. At the event, which was held on a cruise ship this year, the Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) Foundation launched the next phase of its $5 million Close to Home Campaign – Excellent Health Care, Just Down the Road. “The cruise theme is perfect for our launch because we want a full crew helping us with this campaign,” said Doug Grenkie, campaign chair. Grenkie added that as a grandfather of two babies born at the WDMH, he’s proud to lead the campaign. “It will allow the hospital to maintain and enhance vital services and programs, now and for future generations,” he said. The campaign currently has a total of $2.1 million donated
to the cause. Foundation Director Peter Remillard presented a $50,000 anonymous gift to Grenkie and Carkner to kick off the new campaign. Grenkie thanked all the donors in the local communities, service clubs and corporate donors for their generosity. Matt Carkner, honourary chair of the campaign, said WDMH has greatly impacted his life. “It has been there to provide me and my family with excellent care,” he said. “My brother, sister and I were all born at the hospital. When I needed the emergency department, it was always there with fast and friendly care. I want to be sure the wonderful staff here have all the tools they need to continue to provide the best care.” Over the next few days the public awareness campaign will include posters in local businesses and offices as well as area banks and media.

Class EA for the Four Lane Upgrade of County Road 43, Kemptville Corridor – Environmental Study Report
Ending Women’s Cancers from page 1 The year 2011 is when more than 11,000 women aged between 50 and 69 years old will be eligible for mammography. But the closest services are located more than 30 minutes away. “[The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers] is about women in the community, and getting them involved in fundraising for something that will ultimately benefit them,” said Bell. The teams in the area, which are the Country Boobkins, Kemptville Yoginis, KDH Auxiliary Breast Cancer Walkers and the KDH Bust Buddies have been holding garage sales, bake sales and various other fundraisers to help raise money for the cause. Heggie said Bodhi Tree Yoga has also been holding jewelry sales and selling yoga items to raise money for her team. “We want to do that little bit extra to find a cure.” Heggie said. “When we train we persevere through the sore backs, the blisters and the cramped feet, but that’s nothing compared to what people go through in their journey with cancer.”
An Environmental Study Report (ESR) for the Four Lane Upgrade of County Road 43, Kemptville Corridor has been prepared in accordance with Schedule “C” of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, October 2000, as amended in 2007 that has been accepted by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and approved by the Government of Ontario for projects of this type. This study is a continuation of work that was undertaken by the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville in 2005/06 which concluded with a recommended solution to widen the existing corridor from (2) lanes to four (4) lanes between Highway 416 and Somerville Road. This study was summarised in a report entitled “United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, County Road 43 Corridor Master Plan.” The current study began in early 2009 and expands on the Master Plan recommendation in accordance with a Schedule “C” project. Schedule ‘C” projects require a more detailed environmental assessment and conclude with a proposed design rather than a proposed solution. This brochure advertises the completion of the current study and recommended design for the corridor.

The Accidental Farmwife: Skinny love and the Farmer’s birthday back up to the barn and collapse in the corner. One morning, I found this lamb in the barn by herself, after everyone else had headed out to the field. She didn’t have the energy to move. “Stay right there, Skinny Love,” I told her, and went back to the house to mix up a bottle of milk replacer. When I returned, she was right where I had left her. “Ba-aah” she sang, as if to say, “I’m still here.” But as I approached, she jumped up, bolted out the door and took off toward
The Accidental Farmwife Diana Fisher the pasture. I had to chase and tackle her. That first time, I think I got about 75
By Janet Stavinga, Chair Four municipalities in our region get their source of municipal drinking water from local rivers: Carleton Place, Ottawa, Perth and Smiths Falls. Their intake pipes draw water straight out of the Mississippi River, Ottawa River, Tay River and Rideau River, respectively. That water is then filtered, disinfected and tested before being piped out to homes and businesses in those urban areas. The Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Committee (SPC) is now completing studies that will make municipal drinking water even safer! These rivers and the land that drains into them upstream of the intakes were studied to determine where pollutants might be able to get into the water and how vulnerable the intakes are to contamination. Knowing this will allow us to create policies that will help prevent contamination in crucial areas. First, the studies assessed how vulnerable the intakes are to contamination. For instance, Ottawa’s intakes, that are over 300 metres from shore and more than 6 metres deep, are generally less vulnerable than intakes in smaller rivers like Perth’s whose intake is only four metres from shore and is less than two metres deep. Next, the studies mapped land and water where polluted runoff or spilled chemicals could flow downstream and reach the intake. Three important Intake Protection Zones (IPZs) were mapped: a 200 metre buffer around each intake (IPZ-1); an area within which runoff and spilled contaminants could reach the intake within 2 hours (IPZ-2); and a large area within which water could reach the intake (IPZ-3). Lastly, scientists determined how easily contaminants (if present) could enter the river within these three zones – the vulnerability of the area. They considered: amount of land in IPZ-2 (more land, more chance of contamination); land cover, soil type, permeability and slope (all determine if water will run off into the river or seep into the soil – higher runoff means more chance of contamination); and the presence of pathways like ditches, storm sewers and tributaries which make it easier for contaminants to get to the river. In IPZ-1, only Ottawa’s intakes received the lower of two possible vulnerability scores. In IPZ-2, Smiths Falls and Ottawa received the middle of three possible scores while Carleton Place and Perth received the highest. This is the first time this type of study has been done in Ontario and there has been a lot of debate about methodologies. While it’s not in the public interest to underestimate how vulnerable our drinking water sources are, it also isn’t right to assign the most restrictive vulnerability score to an area without scientific rationale. The SPC considers these results to be a reasonable first time assessment with the desire to reassess them (and assign vulnerability scores in IPZ-3) once more provincial direction is provided. Land uses are now being looked at within the most vulnerable areas to estimate how many significant threats to the water supply currently exist. Examples include municipal landfills and sewage treatment plants, large volume fuel storage, large volume fertilizer and pesticide application and spreading of manure. Many of these land uses can easily reduce their threat by implementing best management practices. A Source Protection Plan containing policies to address each threat will get underway this fall and will involve lots of public input.

I suppose I could grab her, lock her up in a stall and train her on the selffeeding bottle. But I want her to be out on the field like all the others, eating the fresh grass shoots and lying in the warm spring sun. The hobbledy-horse still comes running over to me whenever she sees the bottle, so I usually let her finish it off. This is the time of year when the smell of blossoms is hanging in the air, even if you can’t see the flowers. I was on walkabout around the pasture the other day, collecting balls of fluff, wool tags and discarded lamb tails, and the scent of honeysuckle, apple blossom and lilac
was heavy on the breeze. Unlike most farmsteads, we don’t have many flowering trees. I think we should plant some. This is also the time of year when I am trying to come up with an original way to celebrate the Farmer’s birthday. One year I took him to see kd lang at the NAC. She was amazing. Last year I think I took him to Blue Rodeo. This year, I’m stumped. I have a few ideas but nothing concrete yet. The only thing I know for sure is that he needs a new manure pitchfork. That would make him happy. So I’ll get one of those at TSC (The Sexy Cowboy store) and put a bow on it.

mls into her. I got in the habit of sneaking out early in the morning to catch her before she left the barn. In the evenings I waited till the sheep all came in for shelter, and snuck up behind her. Day by day she became stronger. After about the third day and sixth supplementary feeding, her back straightened out. She was no longer hunched over with hunger. “Come on skinny love, just last a year,” I sang, and she turned to look at me. And took a tentative step toward me. Reeeached out her neck and sniffed the end of the bottle. And then bolted. I leaped and tackled her. She took 300 mls.

About a week after the lambs were let out to the pasture, I noticed one little lamb that was hunched over like this. JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com
More than 300 firefighters gathered in Metcalfe last week to honour and say goodbye to one of their own. Captain Maynard McEwan was a member of the Ottawa Fire Services and the man in charge of the well-being of all of the city’s fire fighting vehicles. He passed away while on a trip to Ocala Florida where he was putting the finishing touches on a deal with Emergency One - the company that was preparing the city of Ottawa’s latest vehicle a ladder truck. He died in his sleep on Wednesday, May 12. McEwan is survived by his wife Geraldine, and children Christine and Kimberly. He was 60 years old. Captain McEwan had worked for the past 21 years as a full-time mechanical officer for the Ottawa Fire Services. He began his career with the Gloucester Fire Department in 1988, continuing in that role after amalgamation. His job was to look after the city’s fleet of more than 150 vehicles. Many firefighters remember McEwan

Captain Maynard McEwan loved his job. He was one of many who shepherded the amalgamated fire service in Ottawa through its growing pains as its fire vehicle fleet expanded. for his timely and never-ending efforts to ensure that their fire trucks were always ready and in good repair. “He was a city mechanic back in 1985,
but he was dedicated to looking after fire trucks in Gloucester,” said Marc Messier, public information officer with the Ottawa Fire Service. Messier can remember the days when McEwan would be out in the field tending to a vehicle with a problem. Gord Mills the deputy chief of Rural Operations and Fleet has fond memories of McEwan. McEwen’s positive attitude and willingness to get the job done were attributes that Mills remembers made a great difference to the fire service. “He loved the fire service,” said the deputy chief. “He excelled at his job. He was the kind of guy who looked after everyone else first and never thought of himself.” Mills remembers that at the time of amalgamation, in 2000, the fleet was in need of repairs and refurbishing. “Maynard would push,” said Mills, describing how McEwan met the challenge of amalgamation and co-ordinating the strategy to maintain an ever expanding fire services fleet. The ladder truck in Florida will be taller than the ones the city has now. It will
be able to go up and over high-rise buildings. Mills said that McEwan had been working on the design, purchase and training for the ladder truck for the past two years. “We will dedicate it to him,” he said.“He was a wonderful guy.”
Members of the Ocala Fire Rescue took part in a ceremony honouring Ottawa’s Captain Maynard McEwan who passed away while in Ocala inspecting the Ottawa Fire Services newest ladder truck.

Keeping mosquitoes at bay
391344-21-10
390278-21-10
Mosquitoes are among the most common uninvited guests at backyard barbecues and other outdoor gatherings. But warding off these hungry and intrusive insects can be done in a number of ways. One of the ways in which homeowners can minimize the likelihood of mosquito infestations is to ensure gutters are clean and clear of debris. Another, though probably less popular, way to reduce the risk of mosquitoes wreaking havoc on a backyard barbecue is to ask guests to refrain from wearing perfumes, aftershave or other products that have strong

aromas. Such items attract mosquitoes and can increase the risk of guests getting bitten. Tight-fitting clothing can be bitten through by hungry mosquitoes, while more loose fitting clothing can be more efficacious when it comes to protecting partygoers. Finally, maintaining any areas where water can gather is also an effective means to ward off mosquito attacks. Turn over a dog’s water bowl when not in use or throw sand or dirt in any rain puddles to make the property less attractive to pesky and problematic mosquitoes.

Carrots can be enjoyed in a number of ways and are a staple of cooking year-round. Peas: Peas grow inside the pods of legumes. These plants like moist soil that drains well. Water frequently but make sure the soil doesn’t become flooded if you want peas to flourish. Peppers: Peppers come in so many varieties it’s easy to find ones that appeal to your taste in cooking. Generally peppers thrive in soil high in magnesium. Using compost and Epsom salt in the soil can help achieve the environment peppers desire. Lettuce: Lettuce is another staple and the basis for many salad dishes. Lettuce also tops sandwiches and can be filled and wrapped for other recipe ideas. Seeds should be planted between 8 and 16 inches apart. Water in the morning instead of at night to prevent disease from developing.

the soil has thawed and there is no other chance for frost. They’ll require plenty of sunlight. Fruit will be available to harvest toward the latter part of the summer. Zucchini: Zucchini are an Italian squash variety that appear similar to a cucumber. They can be green or yellow in coloring. This vegetable is full of potassium, folate and manganese, making it a great addition to your menu. Zucchini take about a month to mature and be ready to harvest. They grow on vines and produce large flowers before bearing fruit. Beets: Root vegetables like beets and radishes work well in the garden as well. The bright purple color of beets indicates they are full of many essential vitamins and minerals. Toss beets in salads or use them in the traditional soup, borscht. Carrots: Another subterraneangrowing veggie, carrots require moist soil as they germinate, but as the plants mature need less water.

That’s what people say. The only problem with Blundstone boots is that they never seem to wear out. Oh, people try. But after a few years of kicking the bejeez out of them, they’re more comfortable than ever and still going strong. Expensive? Nope, they get cheaper by the day.

Rising costs at the supermarket and worries about unhealthy pesticides or preservatives on foods has led many people to start a vegetable garden at home. Growing vegetables is easier than one would think. Plus, you don’t need an expansive plot of land to grow a garden. Many popular varieties can be grown right in containers or in compact spaces. Perhaps you’re wondering what vegetables are the easiest to grow if this is your first attempt at a food-based garden. There are several to try. Tomatoes: While commonly considered vegetables, tomatoes are actually fruits. But tomatoes can be an integral part of a vegetable garden. Tomatoes are high in lycopene and other antioxidants. There are also myriad varieties to tempt your palate. Tomatoes can be planted after

Kemptville Cubs attends annual Kub BRIAN WILSON The second Kemptville Cub Pack travelled to Prescott to compete in the annual Kub Kar Rally held at South Grenville District High School. A Kub Kar starts out as a seven inch block of wood that the Cubs carve or cut to the desired shape that they choose. Then they sand, paint and finish their car as they wish. Then they add their wheels and axles. The cars race on a gravity track. Imaginations run wild in the designs but there is a weight limit of 142 grams to balance the competition. This year, 84 cars competed. Cub Packs from Kemptville, Oxford Mills, Spencerville, Prescott, Morrisburg and Brockville participated. Throughout the morning a total of nine separate heats were run and the top nine fastest cars advanced to the finals. Three members of the Kemptville Pack qualified for the final races. After three more heats the winners were determined. Kayle Urslak ended up 7th overall, followed by Kyle Widenmaier who was 5th overall. Taking home the 3rd place trophy was Ryan Connors. The difference between first and third was 0.04 seconds. Also taking home trophies were Josh Brazeau who won for Best Design and Kayle Urslak for Best Paint. The 17 Cubs from Kemptville enjoyed the day of racing as well as the opportunity to work on merit badges.

Well known NDP candidate Steve Armstrong dies JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com
A friend to all in the Leeds and Grenville community and a determined spokesperson for the Ontario NDP Party, Steve Armstrong, died on May 19 at the age of 44. The sudden death of the popular NDP candidate has been attributed to natural causes. He died in a Belleville hotel room. “It is shocking,” said Merv Richards, Armstrong’s campaign manager during the March by-election in Leeds and Grenville. “Steve was a great, stand-up guy. He was relentless with his politics and was able to
gain respect across party lines.” Armstrong first entered into politics as an NDP hopeful in 2003. He was born and raised in Brockville. For 20 years he worked as a chemical controller at Invista Canada. He was the president of the local union, CEP Local 28. He was recently laid off. Armstrong was a determined NDP candidate who believed that the time for political change in Leeds and Grenville was due. He ran as a federal NDP candidate in 2004, 2006 and 2008. In 2003 he ran in the provincial election and then in 2010 he ran in the by-election to replace veteran MPP Bob Runciman who was appointed to the Senate.
“In the recent by-election he said that politics of fear were taking the place of the politics of John A MacDonald,” said Richards. “He was a great advocate of social justice.” Richards remembers the all candidates meeting held in late February in Kemptville. Armstrong kept returning to the topic of the Liberal government’s pending HST. “He would not let it go,” said Richards. In a press release, Leeds and Grenville MP Gord Brown said, “A passionate advocate for the NDP, what he believed in, and his community, Steve exemplified everything positive about our democracy. I looked forward
to speaking with him and debating through the past three federal elections and considered him a friend. He is going to be missed by everyone who knew him. At this time, my deepest sympathies are with his family and friends.” New Democratic leader Jack Layton said, in a statement, “I join New Democrats from across Ontario in mourning the death of a passionate social democrat, Steve Armstrong, who died too young at 44. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Steve’s family and friends. Steve will be remembered for a life committed to building a better world and he will be dearly missed.”
