A family of four managed to escape a devastating Saturday morning fire which destroyed everything they owned. The Tremblay family was able to save their dog and two guinea pigs but their pot belied pig ran off into the bush near their home during the blaze.

An early morning fire in Oxford Station has left a family of four without a home. Steven and Suzanne Tremblay along with their two children Joshua and Mathew are looking for a way to move forward after losing everything to the fire. The smell of burning plastic, paint and a hundred other toxic chemicals not to mention wet wood still floats in the air. There is little left of their home.

Steven was at work Saturday morning at Wayne’s Auto-Tek in Kemptville. He received a frantic call from his wife Suzanne that there was a fire at his house at 2120 County Road 20, just across from the former Garden of Eat’n Restaurant. He left to come home never imagining that his family and home were facing a disaster, and the ambulance, police and fire trucks passed him on the way. “I was at work,” he said, “I did not know how bad it was. When I turned on to County Road 20, I could see the smoke and thought it

was just a farmer burning something.” The fire was called in at around 9 a.m. Kemptville Fire Department Chief Tim Bond said 25 firefighters responded to the fire call, including firefighters from Edwardsburg - Cardinal. There were seven fire trucks from Kemptville and two from Edwardsburgh-Cardinal. The cause of the fire is still being investigated,” said Chief Bond. The chief said that no firefighters were hurt. Eight year-old Katie McElhinney’s wish was to go to Disney world to see dolphins and princesses. Her big brother Joe, 9, has a wish for a sound proof drum studio in his mom’s basement. Katie’s wish was recently granted by the Children’s Wish Foundation, and it’s all thanks to area businesses and people like Kemptville resident Joan Nolan who donate time and money to the charity. “Every time my grandbabies laugh, my heart just wants to sing,” said Nolan. “But there’s so many children who don’t get to have that laugh. That’s what I think of when I look at the Children’s Wish Foundation.” Katie and Joe’s mother, Melanie, knows that first hand. Her children have cystic fibrosis, and she said donations from area businesses and people like Nolan help her children stay positive. “Katie was in a depression, coming to terms with

everything,” said McElhinney. “At seven years-old, they shouldn’t be learning stuff like this.” She said in Disney World, the children were able to live life carefree visiting Sea World and all the Disney characters. Katie was even given a princess makeover along with a photo shoot. Nolan said the Kemptville community and businesses help make stories like the McElhinney’s happen. She added that the community support has been phenomenal attending events and donating money. “There are just so many people that are just so wonderful,” she said. When she approached businesses with clouds for a toonie or balloons for Children’s Wish, for example, she said every business would open their doors to her. “I’d explain myself and what I was all about and what I was doing it for,” she said. “Not one person would refuse me.” Allister Brown of Patterson, Hadden & Brown, Insurance Brokers, Capilano’s Pizza, B&H, Broadways, Os-

Lynn Noel, fundraising co-ordinator for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada National Capital Region, said Kemptville’s community support has been phenomenal, including Nolan’s hard work to make it happen by approaching businesses. “The support we’ve received from individuals and local businesses in Kemptville over the past two years has been outstanding,” said Noel. “We so appreciate Joan as the real driving force and the reason for how successful the last two years have been.”

The fire had managed to take control of the house and when firefighters arrived they were able to control the damage and make sure that the occupants were safe. The early morning fire was discovered by 10 year old Mathew. “”He woke up first ,” said Suzanne. “I tried to get into the laundry room where the fire was but there was too much smoke. It was so think,” she said. “I could not even try to put the fir out. I just grabbed the phone and called 911,”

she explained. Her older son Joshua went next door to alert the people there. The home is a duplex with one family on each side. The family has lost everything they had in the house. Neighbours gave them clothing as their home burned. “The Oxford Station community gave us cloths. We were in our pajamas.” “You never think that this can happen to you,” said Steven. “Now that I have gone through this my heart goes out to anyone who has to go through it,” he said.

Kemptville is a true model of how a downtown can be revitalized and restored to its original beauty, said Forbes Symon, director of planning and development at Monday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting. “What drives success? It’s a clear vision, public investment and private investment,” said Symon. Symon gave a roughly 20-minute presentation that he also recently presented to more than 100 developers and planners from Eastern Ontario who gathered in Kemptville for a conference. The presentation, set up as a slide show, illustrated how the downtown core has changed and improved over the last few years. It all started with the Strategic Plan in 2006, said Symon, which indicated that Kemptville’s downtown was not something to be proud of. “Before 2006, downtown Kemptville was in a dreary state,” he said. “Everything was run down and County Road 43 was the focus with Wal Mart coming and the Kemptville Colonnade.” That all changed when Don Munz, an artist who arrived in Kemptville from California, had a vision for the downtown core. “It was a fresh set of eyes,” said Symon. “He saw beyond the buildings, cracked sidewalks and wires.” Symon added that the strategic plan recognized the importance of making downtown more pleasing to the eye, but there was no catalyst to drive the community. Munz started with some simple illustrations of what the downtown core could look like while still using the basic structure of the buildings. His illustrations of how the downtown core could look were promoted and positively received by the community, said Symon. “The vision of the strategic plan was in fromt of the community in full, living colour,” said Symon. ““The pictures were worth 1,000 words and created a buzz.”

COMMUNITY

Change is the constant We live in strange but moving times. All around us is change of one sort or another. Perhaps that curse about living in interesting times is more real than we realized. The Prime Minister confronts an opposition bent on taking him on even if they should know better. The Liberals and NDP talk about a coalition government as if that is their only way of participating in government. Whatever happened to creating your own platform and letting your point of view carry the day? While Canadians shudder at the thought of any kind of federal election, the Americans wrestle with their environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. It must really suck to be any kind of BP Oil executive at the moment. Closer to home, the forest fires in Quebec manage to make their presence felt all the way to North Grenville. Even though the fact that the scent of a fire hundreds of miles away started to smell as if it was in our back yard last week is a sign of how easy the environment can be altered, if only for a few days. That message was quickly forgotten once the wind shifted. At any given time, thanks to the ever present daily media bits that come sailing through the air into our cell phones, computers, radio and television sets, we can stay informed or at least humbled by so many worldly and local events. Here in North Grenville, we have seen an unprecedented number of business openings, rezoning meetings, building permits and fundraising events. There are so many great dinners such as the Mason’s Fish Fry dinner not to mention events like the Mother’s Day Brunch that you have to wonder where all of the people are coming from. There is one new high school on the way and another that will be expanded as well as a growing hospital and a healthy and increasingly active college. Whether it be world events or simply the opening of a new fire station right here in Kemptville, there is a great deal going on around us and you can only watch, as North Grenville, and it seems the world changes for what we all have to hope is for the better.

Ottawa’s Lansdowne Park is for everyone, not just Glebe As a child of 13, I remember going to city planning meetings to push for a basketball court at Lansdowne Park. It’s there now (in the northeast corner) and heavily used. My family has been active for decades in fighting for the character of a really livable community. We’ve been around this issue for a lifetime and are invested in its outcome. Speaking of investment, Glebe residents pay very high property taxes and don’t get much city-owned recreational space in return. Apparently paying $500 a month in property taxes doesn’t qualify you to take an active interest in local development, it makes you a whiner. How much would you enjoy being powerless to stop a development of this size in your neighbourhood? Speaking of powerless, this plan neuters public management in favor of private interests. Instead of the public managing public resources it would transfer the management

to an outside private entity that will derive the benefit from management. OSEG is a separate legal entity formed for the purpose, which means no liabilities for its shareholders but plenty of opportunity for dividends. It has the right to rent-free retail, stadium, hotel and office commercial land for 30 years. It has the right to assign all these rights to a co-developer / co-tenant. What that means is that it can sell its rights to the highest bidder, make money off of the building and refurbishment of the stadium, disburse the profits to the shareholders, run a money-losing franchise for a couple of years for show and then walk away claiming the economics just aren’t there anymore. In short it can plunder public resources, all while running rough shod over the concerns of the local community and leaving them to deal with the headache afterwards. I understand that for some of you, the idea of one more shot at an OtVice-President & Regional Publisher Chris McWebb chris.mcwebb@metroland.com Regional General Manager John Willems john.willems@metroland.com

tawa football franchise is appealing. Maybe some additional retail in the downtown core is interesting. And some additional green space you can visit now and then is a draw. But before you back this development understand the real choice you are making. You are backing the arbitrary transfer of city land to private developers selected by non-elected officials behind closed doors. You are supporting the trampling of local community rights in favor of outside interests, ignoring the taxes paid in over generations. You are OK with potentially destroying communities that have been built up over time and with great care with rushed through plans whose impact will last for generations. Knowing all this, if you still back it that is your choice, at least you will have your eyes wide open. Greg Marlin

As the Honorary Chairperson of the KDH Mammography Campaign, I would like to publicly congratulate and thank the over 50 men and women from our community who took part in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers on June 5 and 6. The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, which organizes the Weekend, agreed in 2009 to donate 75 per cent of funds raised by local teams right back to the Hospital’s Mammography Campaign. Last year’s Weekend resulted in a donation of $46,700 for MamCam and our goal this year to was to raise at least $50,000. This year’s participants raised about $100,000 – and that means that approximately $75,000 will come right back to KDH, to help local women in their own fight against breast cancer!

We feel that the entire community is behind us and we are making great strides in reaching our goal of $750,000 to equip the mammography suite. I want to say thank you to the community members who supported these teams by going to bake sales, yard sales, playing softball in the snow and by sponsoring our many walkers. And to the members of the Country Boobkins, the Kemptville Yoginis, KDH Auxiliary Breast Cancer Walkers and the KDH Foundation Bust Buddies: a big, big thank you! With your help, and your feet, we are that much closer to our dream of being able to provide mammography services right here in Kemptville.

All four area teams got together just before the start of The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers. The annual event was held on June 5 and 6.

Dear Editor:

WEEKEND TO END CANCER

391969

Artist feels left out Dear Editor: Our Branch Artisans group participated in the Dandelion Festival meetings when organizing was taking place, but even knowing that the St. John’s United Church and the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church had events going on as part of the Festival – as they do each and every year, the roads were closed at Van Buren Street forbidding anyone to pass by our events, unless perhaps they were walking. But from the lack of pedestrian traffic at our end of Prescott Street, it appeared people were arriving at the North end of the street. Needless to say, we had maybe 50 people through all day and sold only to those members of

St. John’s church that knew we would be there as we are each year, but sales were very poor to non-existent. I don’t speak for the rest of the Branch Artisans group, but as far as I am concerned, the Dandelion Festival is not an allinclusive venture where all participants are appreciated and helped with their exhibitions; it appears to be only inclusive to those that have store-fronts at the North end of Prescott street. I’m not impressed and probably won’t bother trying to participate in this badly executed event again. It’s a total waste of my time. This is my third year participating. Camp Trillium needs community’s help KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com

People in Kemptville have a chance to help children with cancer. Howard Wilson Motors is accepting donations for Camp Trillium - an Ontario-wide camp that supports children and teens with cancer. “We’re trying to get something going,” said Howard Wilson. “We need some money to make sure it’s all there.”There are two residential camps in Ontario – one in Garratt’s Island just outside of Belleville and one at Rainbow Lake, close to Brantford. Children and teens who attend the camp have access to a lake for water sports, drama, high ropes

and adventure programs. Winter camps are even offered as well. According to the Childhood Cancer Support Centre, campers gain strength and confidence at these camps. The camp is made to show them that they aren’t alone. Children can form friendships with each other that last a lifetime. Since Camp Trillium does not receive government funding, the centre relies on community support across Ontario to send children. Cash donations are accepted but donating equipment, like canoes, or time to the camp are also accepted. Kemptville Farmer’s Market opens in new location JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com

SOUTH MOUNTAIN CAR RALLY

The Kemptville Farmers’ Market opened at their new location beside the old Kemptville fire hall on Saturday. “We are still growing,” said the farmer’s market manager Colleen Bailey. The market had been operating right in down town Kemptville. The new location will allow the market to grow. “This is our fourth year and we have doubled each year,” she added. There will be a special table set aside for the community groups. There are plans to have special events in the furture which will make the market even

more fun and meaningful for the North Grenville community. “The new location gives us flexability in what we can do,” said Bailey. The challenge for the market this summer is to find a way to let their customers know that they have moved and that they are bigger and better than before. North Grenville Councillor Tim Sutton was on hand for the opening. “I think that this is a good spot,” he said. “It lends itself to a bigger and better market and they will be able to expand,” he added. Sutton looked around the market parking lot as it began to fill up and commented, that if today’s attendance is an example then the market will be a sucess.

This was the second year for he event and registration was up from eleven last year to more than 16 this year. This past Saturday marked the 30th annual Masonic Fish Fry in North Grenville. More than 830 diners showed up at the North Grenville Municipal Centre to enjoy a great meal courtesy of the Masons and entertainment from the Gruff Sisters Kitchen Party. Much of the food was provided by Jim Beveridge of B&H Grocer in Kemptville. There were 375 pounds of ocean perch, 180 pounds of fries, 130 pounds of cole slaw, 100 pounds of potato salad. There were around 35 masons helping out as well as five Girl Guides and two of their leaders. The Guides were giving back to the Masons as they use the building for their meetings. Jim Beveridge says that the dinner was really encouraging. “It is getting to the point where you will have to get your tickets in advance,’ he said referring to how popular the dinner has become. The B&H grocery store helps out with all the food. Jim says that he has to start looking for the fish portion months in advance to make sure he can get enough.

Normally, when we are loading the sheep onto the truck for market, I tell them there is always the chance that someone will buy them as a pet. They go to auction, strut through the ring, and who knows? They don’t always end up in someone’s freezer, with a recipe for moussaka taped to their side. You don’t believe me? Well, remember Skinny Love? Now I have a real story to tell the sheep about the possibility of life after the farm. Skinny was born a multiple, and she was what you might consider a runt of the litter. But she was surviving. When the weather got warm enough to let mom and lambs out onto the pasture, however, Skinny promptly lost track of her family. She didn’t cry much. If she had, perhaps her mother would have identified herself. But sometimes you end up with a mother who is not exactly maternal. One who loses count of her own offspring. In any case, Skinny spent most of her energy each day trotting after one ewe or another, blending in with the other lambs, and attempting to steal milk. It took all the

energy she had. Soon Skinny interested in the milk. She was was tired out. And she had on grass now. She was a big that horrible hunched-over girl. False gun threat sends school into lock-down

BY KRISTY WALLACE

kristy.wallace@metroland.com

A text message involving a gun threat sent North Grenville District High School into lock-down last week. Ontario Provincial Police were called to the Kemptville high school shortly af-

ter 1:30 p.m. last Tuesday after a student said they received a text message involving a gun from a 19 year-old male who does not attend the school. The lock-down was lifted after police arrested the male at his home and no weapons were seized. After checking the male’s cellphone and interviewing students, Lindsey said that

police found no threats were made. The male was released and police issued a trespass notice which does not allow him on school grounds. “It can happen anywhere. It’s not just unique to Kemptville,” said Terry Simzer, spokesperson for the Upper Canada District School Board.

He added that this was a rare incident and there will be no action taken on the student who reported the false threat. “One of the jobs of the police is to protect the community,” he said. The OPP would not comment what the relationship is between the student and the 19 year-old.

DON MERCER

A look back in time to ancient foods

Special to the Advance

Contrary to what our kids used to say, I was not around to witness the extinction of the dinosaurs, nor was I personally present for the discovery of the wheel. However, ancient history has always fascinated me, especially the pyramids of Egypt. Being a “Foodie”, it is not a giant leap to move from amazement of the lasting monuments left by these ancient people to wondering how they lived and what they ate. For many of us, it is hard to imagine a world without convenience foods, snack foods, and of course, the microwave oven. (I will freely admit to being around when the microwave oven came into prominence). One story that I find rather interesting concerns the origin of marshmallows. According to legend, a merchant at the time of King Tut (about 3,300 years

ago) ventured into a marshy area along the Nile late one night. A beam of light from the full moon illuminated a white frothy substance near the base of some reeds, or mallows. For some unexplained reason, this adventuresome fellow de-

cided to throw caution to the wind. He tasted the soft, sticky mass, and found it surprisingly pleasant. Being of an entrepreneurial spirit, he sweetened it, possibly with a bit of honey, and began selling his discovery in the marketplace. Word quickly reached King Tut who tried it. Tut immediately declared that from that day forward the marshmallow, as we now call it, would be reserved for the exclusive consumption of the gods including himself, of course. Today, marshmallows are enjoyed by millions, although they are produced in a somewhat less exotic manner and contain only food-approved ingredients. While the marshmallow story may be a fanciful tale, what did the Egyptians of this time actually eat? The Nile River was a great provider for them. Each year it overflowed its banks depositing rich silt over the surrounding landscape. Such fertile soil supported a successful agricultural base for the economy. The Egyptians were able to

grow wheat and barley in apparent abundance. Wheat was ground by hand to make flour, which in turn was mixed with water and yeast to form a dough for bread, a staple food in all ancient Egyptian diets. The dough was molded into triangular loaves and baked in clay ovens. Not lacking in creativity, the ancient Egyptians used their barley to make beer through a process today’s brew-masters might find peculiar, to say the least. They made a dough from barley and yeast. After partially baking the dough, they broke it into small pieces and mixed it with water in large vats. Once the concoction had fermented, dates or honey were added to flavour it. In addition to delivering fertile soil, the Nile provided large quantities of fish such as perch and catfish. Fish were an important part of the daily diet since the desert climate made it difficult to raise livestock for meat, which only the very wealthy could afford to eat. Geese and ducks were also raised and wild birds were hunted in the marshes along the river. Food could be preserved by drying it in the sun, or by salting it. According to depictions on tomb walls and other evidence found in burial chambers, onions, leeks, beans, lettuce, lentils, cabbage, radishes and turnips were among the vegetables grown in local gardens. Dates and figs were the more popular desserts enjoyed at the time. To add a little pizzazz to their diets, the Egyptians used herbs and seasonings such as dill, coriander, mustard, cinnamon, and rosemary, as well as vinegar, cumin, and marjoram. Venturing a little further back in time and travelling eastward to ancient Mesopotamia, there are unique records of the food that was typically eaten. Archaeologists have discovered 3,700 year-old clay tablets with inscriptions of thirty-five favourite recipes for various stews etched in cuneiform. This is generally regarded as being the world’s first cookbook and conveys a major innovation in cooking methodology. Prior to this, foods were cooked directly over a fire or in a clay oven. However, all these recipes focussed on cooking meats, grains, and vegetables in water - an advance that opened new culinary opportunities. Surprisingly, samples of food from more than three thousand years ago have survived through time, thanks to the dry climate of the Egyptian desert. Bread and honey have been found in tombs and can be seen in museums around the world. All of this makes you wonder what will be found of our dietary delights three thousand years from now, and what those viewing them will think of our culinary customs. Don Mercer is an associate professor of food science at University of Guelph Kemptville Campus.

BY KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com

The oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico has been making headlines nation-wide. And in the heart of Merrickville, 11 year-old Taylor Horning and her nine year-old sister Peyton are doing something about it. The pair, who attend Holy Cross school in Kemptville, are collecting hair from salons and pet groomers to clean up the oil. “It’s really easy for kids to think that just because it’s in the United States, it doesn’t affect Canada,” said Taylor. “But we have lots of birds that migrate to the United States like the Gannet from Newfoundland. Now we’re worried it’s not going to come back.”

The girls first got the idea when they were watching the news and saw the oil spill. Their grandparents showed them a video on Youtube that illustrated how hair can be used to clean up oil spills. When hair is packed into a nylon material or sewn together like a mat, it cleans up the oil while leaving the water clean. “We did some researching and thought we could do that,” said Peyton. “It doesn’t cost money to collect hair and it’s easy for kids to do.” The girls made a goal to collect 500 pounds of hair which can potentially pick up 50,000 quarts of oil. But they’re not going to stop there. The sisters – who so far have

collected 25 pounds of hair in just a week – said they will start collecting hair all over again once they have reached their goal. Peyton and Taylor have even made their own business cards where they label themselves “Agents of Environmental Change, Hair and Fur Collection Professionals.” Using these business cards which includes their phone number and their own email address ShareYourHair@hotmail. com, Peyton and Taylor have already been to 17 hair salons and three pet groomers around the community. Their former school, Merrickville Public School is also encouraging students to bring in pet hair and old nylons to help with their efforts.

The pair said they’ve also already received a few donations from businesses in Merrickville and the Rotary Club in Kemptville. Peyton and Taylor are also encouraging anyone to send money to ship the hair since it will cost them a dollar per pound to send and also old nylons - even with runs in them – to pack the hair. So far they have raised $300 but they still need $200 more if they want to raise enough to send the 500 pounds of hair they hope to collect. “There’s some animals on the endangered species list like the brown pelican that might become extinct and the world will lose that species [to the oil spill],” said Peyton. “So it’s not only affecting

that area. It’s actually affecting everyone in the whole world.” Their mother, Alexandra Prefasi-Horning, said she’s extremely proud of her daughters and continues to be supportive of their efforts. “I think it’s important to know that kids can have a significant impact on other people’s lives and on the political process,” she said. “They can make a real difference if they set their minds to it.” Anyone who is interested in donating hair, money or old nylons to the cause can get in touch with Taylor or Peyton by calling 613-269-4560 or by email at ShareYourHair@hotmail.com

Sports Spencerville’s Eric Selleck headed for NHL JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com

Every Canadian winter, thousands of hockey players across the country take part in the very Canadian ritual of playing hockey. Most play for fun, but others have a deep seated secret wish to one day play in the National Hockey League. With each game in hundreds of hockey rinks across the country the hockey tradition continues as well as the hockey dream. Eric Selleck of Spencerville is one of those hockey players who never gave up and aimed for as high as he could in the world of hockey. He has been rewarded with a great opportunity to find a place in the NHL. Selleck has been drafted by the Florida Panthers. He will be playing off a two year contract. This fall Eric travels down to the Florida Panthers training camp. Even after all of his years playing in Junior B and in the CJHL with the Pembroke Lumber Kings, Eric will still have to prove himself at the Panthers training camp. The competing never stops. “It happened out of the blue,” remembers Selleck. The young 22 year old forward stands at 6 feet 2 inches, weighs in at 210 pounds. His best advantage is his work ethic and attitude. “I have always liked to play the game,” he said. And playing the game means learning how to be physical when he has to, scoring more than his share of goals and maintaining a professional poise that has kept him

CJHL. He will be given a chance to play for the Panthers. If the Florida team wants to wait a bit they will be sending him to the Rochester Americans. Either way, Selleck is determined to do well. He said that he still has his education to fall back on however, his dream is to play in the NHL and right now he has his sights set on the Panthers. “My skill level has made it to the next step,” he said. Kemptville Kougars take gold at Icebreaker 2010 SHERRI PICKARD Special to the Advance

The Kemptville Kougars U13, Competitive Girls Soccer Team had an outstanding start to the season, winning gold at the Icebreaker tournament hosted by Ottawa Internationals. With over 400 girls teams participating in this tournament there was plenty of strong competition at all ages. The Kougars played nine games in two days to earn a berth in the gold medal match against OSU. The final was an excellent game with several chances on

The coaches would like to congratulate the players: Sarah Benoit, Katie Bohn, Michelle Lapenskie, Rena Pickard, Shanel Quenneville, Kirsten Johnson, Maddie Corkery, Kaitlin Casey, Jessica Keating, Michelle Wilson, Tori Corkery, Emma Duff, Abby Galbraith, Cassie Render, Cheyenne Williams, Melanie Gerlach, Meghan Rust, and Morgen Davis for their excellent effort and determination.

each side and was scoreless until the last minute when the ball squirted loose in the middle from about thirty metres and the Kempville sweeper stepped in and rocketed a shot that ripped into the top of the net. It was a timely goal just before the final whistle clinching the gold. The Kougars played strong throughout the tournament allowing three goals against while scoring 13. They displayed a strong work ethic and controlled the play with crisp precise passing and overall team support. Offensively there was a balanced at-

tack with goals coming from strikers, midfielders and defensive players. Players were able to generate numerous scoring chances with speed and skill. The defence supported the offense and kept shots to a minimum in all games. Goaltending was superb and a key save on a penalty shot early in the tournament kept the momentum going. The coaching staff are very proud of these girls. Way to go Kougars! Sherri Pickard is the team manager.

Special to the Advance

Families, animal lovers and concert goers are guaranteed a great time – and the warm feeling that comes from helping a good cause – at the 6th annual AnimalFest. The biggest fundraiser of the year for Big Sky Ranch Animal Sanctuary, a registered Canadian charity devoted to giving abused, unwanted and adoptable animals a second chance of a lifetime, this year’s event has been moved to the North Grenville Municipal Centre in order to accommodate all the added attractions organized for the weekend of June 19 and 20. Thousands are expected to attend the two day event, which begins at 11 a.m. both days and features a carnival-like atmosphere with pony rides and buggy rides for the youngsters, three giant slides, a jumping house, a maze and a dunk tank. After all that activity, a delicious barbecue fired up by Kemptville’s M&M Meat Shop will be on hand to fill those hungry tummies, and popcorn and candy stands will satisfy that sweet tooth. For just $5 a person (free for children under 3), kids of all ages can have their face painted and be entertained by the clowns, jugglers and fire eaters of Dr. Kaboom’s Mini Mobile Circus. There will be dog agility demonstrations put on by Shake-A-Paw Dog Training and the K9 police dogs will be out in full force. Fans of vintage cars will ooh and ahh over Hwy 43 Car Club’s collection and everyone will love getting to know some of Big Sky Ranch’s favorite residents at the Big Sky Ranch educational animal display. A huge night-time concert caps off the day on Saturday. AnimalFest: The Concert takes place in the Municipal Centre Arena starting at 6 p.m. with local legend Jumpin’ Jimmy Leroux, stand-up comic

JH5 Comedy and Assembly Required (a crowd favorite at last year’s fundraiser). Then, Cougar Chick Rock takes the stage with their tribute to classic Pat Benatar, Heart, Stevie Nicks, Lady Gaga, Joan Jett and Allanah Myles favorites. Headliners Disco Inferno rounds out the evening with their dynamic tribute to 70s disco music and explosive dance routines. Tickets for this licensed event – a guaranteed high energy, dance-your-face-off show – are $15 in advance (on sale at the municipal centre, Big Sky Ranch and select locations in Kemptville) and $20 at the door. The fun continues on Sunday, with the addition of live, non-stop entertainment included throughout the day starting at 11 a.m. right through until closing at 6 p.m. The lineup of performers includes Jena Taggart, Jumpin’ Jimmy Leroux, JH5 Comedy, Puddle Alley, Tools of Creation, The Start and more. Because Big Sky Ranch relies entirely on the generosity of the public – without receiving any government grants or funding, or charging membership – every dollar raised goes directly to the cost of rehabilitating and caring for these animals aside from a minimal amount required for administration. More than 1,500 animals have attained a happy and healthy outcome through Big Sky’s rehabilitation and extremely successful adoption programs since 2002. Big Sky Ranch is also so much more than an animal sanctuary, and over the years has grown to serve a vital need in the community. For more information on AnimalFest and Big Sky Ranch Animal Sanctuary, visit the web site at: www.bigskyranch. ca. Or, call Andy Parent at 613-258-7118. Osgoode Township students to shape up DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN daniel.bowman@metroland.com

Starting in September, students at Osgoode Township High School will be getting more active. At least that’s the plan of four students who earned a $2,000 grant from the United Way so the school could spend money to upgrade its fitness facilities. Steven Patterson, Stacey Snook, Renee Lepack, and Jess Bunbury’s winning pitch as part of an open-ended civics project designed to increase student activity.

The quartet was then interviewed by the United Way on Coventry Road in Ottawa’s east end who issued the grant. “They chose to do something they felt pretty strongly about,” said teacher Marc Dubeau. “It was to get kids involved in fitness as opposed to just lounging around aimlessly at lunch,” The school will now be opening up a second fitness room to house the new equipment. It is expected to mostly involve spinning bicycles. The students have found some suppliers for the new

equipment, which has yet to be purchased by Dubeau. Dubeau said the school is contemplating charging a nominal fee for a membership, but he wants to make sure people will use the new equipment. “We’re not even sure if we’d do that, but we wouldn’t charge a lot because we have to pay for maintenance,” he said. He added, “There is money in the budget, but fitness facilities are expensive to upgrade so you do it slowly. and before you know it they’ll be lots and lots of students in there.”

HOWAIDA SOROUR

A less than relaxed flyer, Doug Struthers, Mayor of Merrickville-Wolford, had to face the uncomfortable prospect of dangling in the air for 15 hours on his way to China earlier this week. “The less I think about it the better,” he said with a wry smile the day before his departure. Travelling on his own coin, Struthers is joining a delegation of six local mayors and a host of others community leaders, representing the Thousand Islands region to strengthen ties with China’s Thousand Islands district. The Chinese Thousand Islands Lake (Qiadaohu in Chinese), in east China’s Zhejiang Province is an artificially created landscape, following large scale flooding after the construction of Xinanjing Reservoir in 1959. The resulting islands numbering 1,058 are rugged, scenic and covered in natural vegetation. After two visits to the region in China, Kinsella says it compares well in terms of its natural attractions and population with its Canadian counterpart. “The natural landscape is very beautiful” said Kinsella, “What’s interesting is that their tourism infrastructure is much larger than ours – for example they have 98 tour boats to our 14 or 16 tour boats.” The mission follows on the Friendship and Co-operation agreement signed on the St. Lawrence River last fall between Mayor Ling of the Thousand Islands Lake in China and Kinsella. Having a Canadian delegation make the effort to travel to China is particularly important according to Kinsella because of the way the Chinese do business. “The Chinese do business based on relationships, they will not do business with strangers. That means that you have to make an effort to meet them,” explained Kinsella. Local businesses and educators are also taking part, all hoping to open new markets, and encourage student exchanges. There is considerable emphasis on exploring and understanding the Chinese tourism market following China’s decision to bestow approved destination status on Canada, last December. According to Struthers its estimated that by 2015 there will be 35 million Chinese tourists travelling the globe. “So the potential is for some of those tourists to

land in our area. Which is why I think its important to understand the mindset of the Chinese tourists – what they expect in terms of food, accommodation, entertainment and attractions so that we know what we will need to build from a tourism perspective,” he said. Struthers also plans to explore the benefits of signing a Friendship and Co-operation agreement or even a twinning of the Rideau Canal with China’s Grand Canal. “As one of the mayors on the canal, I’m hoping to explore the value of that type of co-operation and the po-

tential economic benefits we could derive from it,” said Struthers. In the meantime some of the highlights of this particular trip include the International Mayor’s Forum being held in Henan Province, China, starting June 10, where Kinsella will be a keynote speaker. “I will be talking about tourism in our area and the sustainability of natural tourist attractions,” said Kinsella. The delegates will also attend World Expo in Shanghai, China and celebrate Thousand Island Day on June 16 at

Kemptville Tim Hortons celebrates Camp Day BY KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com

It was hard not to notice the bustle of activity at the Tim Hortons parking lot in Kemptville on June 2. The tents, silent auction and barbecue were all set up last week for Tim Hortons Camp Day. On that day, every penny from coffees sold went to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation in addition to other money raised that day. “It was just awesome,” said Ingrid Salvador of Tim Hortons. “We got support from the committee, staff members and the whole community.”

Salvador said the restaurant in Kemptville raised $6,602 this year - $1,100 more than was raised last year. The Tim Hortons chain has camps located in Canada and the United States. More than 14,000 children aged nine 12 have a chance to attend these camp sessions. Summer camps run for 10 days and winter camps run for seven. Children are selected by store owners at Tim Hortons who work closely with community youth organizations and schools who they think would get the most out of the camps. Last year, Tim Hortons

across North America were able to raise $9.4 million in total on Camp Day. “The support we recieve from Tim Hortons customers every year is overwhelming,” said Bill Moir, president of the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. “A camp experience is their first time away from home is overwhelming. Shy kids become confident, scared kids become brave.” Salvador adds that the day is also enjoyable for the employees. “It was a great day and there was a great atmosphere at the restaurant that day,” Salvador said. DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN daniel.bowman@metroland.com

Mark Scharfe clearly subscribes to the theory that if you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself. The Ramsayville Road farmer has decided to run for councillor in the Osgoode ward after disagreeing with incumbent Doug Thompson’s stance on the green bid program. The site for the program was built on Hawthorne and Rideau roads, but Scharfe felt that the proper environmental and industrial bylaws were not taken under consideration. At town hall meeting at Fred Barrett Arena, despite strong opposition, Scharfe said that Thompson wouldn’t change his stance. “Everyone told the councillor not to support the green bid,” he said. “It’s a multi-million-dollar waste of money. He wouldn’t turn. “At the end of the day, my position is that the councillor has to represent what the majority of the people want. That’s not what’s happened with this green bin.” Scharfe felt that the program was warranted for a number of reasons. He said 70 per cent of the compost content is made up of moisture when it arrives at the site. Therefore spending $93 per tonne for an 80,000-tonne load is a large pill to shallow. “Water takes up no space at the landfill,” Scharfe said. “It either evaporates or gets pressed out.

Mark Sharfe is running for councillor in the Osgoode ward. “Not only that, but the city is responsible for paying the trucking, the start-up costs, and the contact says that

Here’s My Card

we have to supply 80,000 tonnes to the plant, and if we don’t we have to pay anyway. “I don’t know how any business would sign a contract like that.” Scharfe added that the area shouldn’t have used because of a Gloucester zoning bylaw, which was put in place in large part to protect drinking water from nearby quarries. “To put a compost site that contains cat faeces right next to three of the biggest rock quarries in Ottawa is ridiculous,” he said, noting that people on Rideau Road now have to drink water out of wells. “It doesn’t make sense environmentally or fiscally.” As a beef farmer whose family has owned their properly for 100 years, Scharfe said he cannot use the compost because no one is really sure what’s in the mix. In addition to his stance on the green bid program, Scharfe added that he is not in favour of electric rail, tree-cutting bylaws, garbage dumping policing, and excessive pay to city managers. “I have quite a bit to offer the community as a potential candidate,” he said, adding that his has 30 years experience with the Ottawa police. Scharfe said will not be accepting any donations from big businesses because he doesn’t want to be held accountable to anyone. He has rented a booth at the Metcalfe Fair in October as well. Anyone interested in contacting Scharfe about his campaign can contact him at 613-822-0482.
