In Iran, Shahrooz Yazdani was persecuted because of his Baha’i faith. With his grandfather killed and Baha’i schools stormed and destroyed, he had to leave Iran with his family at only five yearsold. Now, the Kemptville dentist owns his own business and has great reason to celebrate Canada’s birthday – the country that opened its arms to him and his family. “Canadians view everyone as human beings. As proud as we are to be Canadian, we’re always concerned about the welfare of others,” he said. “No other countries embrace that vision as much as Canada does.” Upon leaving Iran, his family moved to Kenya and lived there for seven years. But Yazdani’s family wanted more opportunity for him and his brothers, so they tried twice to immigrate to Australia where they had some family members but weren’t accepted. When they chose to immigrate to Canada next, the country let them in immediately. “It was an indication of Canadian mentality and psyche in terms of wanting to help us,” he said. “It reflects the culture and it’s something I love and respect about Canada.” Since arriving here, Yazdani

More opportunities also meant meeting friends in high school and spending Canada Day with them on Parliament Hill. “One of my fondest memories is painting my face and going down to the hill with everyone,” he said with a smile. Baha’is in Iran weren’t allowed to graduate high school but in Canada, Yazdani had the

opportunity to graduate high school and dental school. “Those certain rights we take for granted here aren’t in other countries,” he said. “For me, the sky was the limit. The only limitations are the ones we place on ourselves.” Today, Yazdani has decided to give back to his fellow Canadians while still keeping the memory of his grandfather alive. Yazdani has set up scholarships and awards to each a male and female graduating from St. Michael’s Catholic High School

and North Grenville District High School who have contributed the most to the community and to humanity at large – naming the awards after his grandfather. “I think that the biggest thing for me is I do feel a lot of gratitude towards Canada. I do feel that Canada embodies ideals that I believe in,” he said. “Canada is a wonderful example to the world of the attitude we should all have towards each other. We’re one humanity.”

The third annual Osgoode Medieval Festival is less than a month away and organizers are putting out a final call to vendors to peddle their wares this July 9, 10, and 11 – especially if they’re edible. “There are no snack food vendors,” says co-ordinator Judy Carey. “Here’s your chance to make good money if you sell food and drinks.” The Medieval Festival runs concurrently with Bluesfest, which draws most of the city’s street meat peddlers each year. As a result, Carey says few have applied to work Osgoode that weekend. “Foodland will have a barbecue going, the Red Dot Café is close by, and of course, there’s the great Medieval Feast Saturday night for $35 a head, but we could use more munchies stands for Saturday and Sunday. People will want somewhere to grab a pop.” Carey expects festival goers to work up quite an appetite, especially those taking their turn throwing wet sponges at the folks in the stocks. Ottawa city councillor Doug Thompson will be the main target on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. “He’s very good about it. In fact, he usually pays for people to throw things at him. They can’t bring their own rotten fruit, or anything, but last year Doug got pretty soaked with the wet sponges.” Via Rail has also donated a trip for four to Quebec City as a door prize for the King’s Feast on Saturday night, one of the highlights of the festival. Carey says that raffle ticket sales are also starting to take off as people hear about the prize – two tickets on any regularly scheduled flight anywhere West Jet flies. A brand new Education Day has also been added to the festival on July 9. Education Day is for children aged four to 16. It is packed with games and demonstrations on everything from chivalry and armour to medieval music and dancing. “Students will rotate through six stations and learn about life in medieval times,” says Maureen Silva, Education Day co-ordinator. “And the passport we give them actually covers the kids’ admission fee for Saturday or Sunday, too, if they come back with a parent, which is pretty cool!” For more information visit www.osgoodemedievalfestival.com or to buy raffle tickets, or tickets for the King’s Feast call Judy Carey at 613-826-1622. UPCOMING MEETINGS

Parents and teachers at the South Branch Elementary school in Kemptville enjoyed a great day of art and entertainment at the school’s first Arts Festival on Friday June 4. There was not a wall in the school that did not have a piece of artwork attached to it. Just about every school class was able to come up with creative projects to showcase to visitors at the school. There were fairytale creatures brought to life by Grade 2 students and paper mache heads on display along with biographies of each person by the Grade 7 class. On the stage in the gymnasium was a never ending line up of singers, drummers, dancers and theatre. The art festival kicked off with stage performances in the gym as well as theatre in room 10 where students from the junior drama club performed a play called “Having Your Cake”. Next up was the Grade 5 class performing a Japanese Theatre from the 1600’s called “The Kabuki Gift”. The theatre aspect went on with a few more great examples of students bringing the arts to life with songs and stories. John Gow is the school’s principal. He estimated that there were 500 students participating in the festival and at least another 1,000 people who dropped by to enjoy the students’ art projects. “It was certainly a great example of the integrated arts,” he said. Getting the event organized took some time. “Our staff put a lot of organization into the project,” said Gow. One of the many features of the arts festival was a barbecue for parents and students. The show took place after 4:30 p.m. so the barbecue fit in nicely with parents and visitors stopping by the school. “The barbecue helped to create a family atmosphere – one valued by this community,” said Gow. The integrated arts program takes place all year long. The art festival was a great opportunity for the students to showcase all of their work. Principal Gow suggested that the festival was the kind of event that could be expanded to include input from more of the local arts community in the future.

OPINION EDITORIAL

COMMUNITY

History in the making

New Horizon Club celebrates volunteers

The ancient art of politics includes mastering the ability to make the right choices at the right time and for the right reasons. The fate of the heritage buildings in North Grenville has been a great one to debate ever since amalgamation and now all of the decisions have been made. Heritage buildings will be sold here and there but will be sold along with their historical significance still intact. Some will say that the North Grenville council should have found a way to keep the buildings for the sake of community history and others will applaud the council determination to be, in their view, fiscally responsible. Both sides of that argument can feel that they were right. The times we are living in help to determine what choices we will have to make, and selling as opposed to keeping and operating historic community buildings, will always be a tough decision in any community. Keeping track of history - a community’s or your own - is crucial to charting a path into the future. History is like the old clothes you used to wear. They say a great deal about who you were, what you wanted to do and what you tried to achieve. Every culture has their own measure of what price they are willing to pay to maintain their history through the existence of historic buildings. In the village of Merrickville, for example, an entire tourist season is centered around the Merrickville Blockhouse. Without the historic stone building that sits at the entranceway to the village and right on the Rideau Canal, the local tourism interest in the village would be difficult to maintain. Of course Kemptville and North Grenville are not necessarily poised to become, in any way, a tourist attraction that is based on the Rideau Canal or associated buildings but it is intriguing to think about. The Spencerville Mill can boast the same kind of political support that the Merrickville Blockhouse receives. For years volunteers fundraised and worked on the Spencerville Mill in a successful attempt to make it the centerpiece of Spencerville. History will remember the decision to sell the building as one that was not easy to make.

Canada Day brings good memories It’s cliché, but the best things in life really are free. Canada Day is one of the few holidays where people don’t have to spend a dime. In fact, it’s encouraged to go to a parade, watch fireworks, or even just sit in the backyard with family and friends enjoying a barbecue. There’s no stress of budgeting for Christmas presents, worrying about expensive turkeys or entertaining in-laws, and no expensive costumes to buy. If you think about your best Canada Day memories, they were probably all free of charge or didn’t cost that much. For me, one of my best Canada Day memories was going to my Uncle Davey’s cottage in Tobermory when I was little. The sparkling waters of Lake Huron were in his backyard, with the closest neighbour about five kilometers away. My stomach would rumble at the smell of the sausages my dad cooked over the fire pit. When the sky turned orange and the clouds turned that purple colour, my little legs shook as they became

remember until next Christmas. But what I remember the most was the agony of waiting in bed at 5 in the morning and dying to open presents while everyone else was still fast asleep. But that evening, on Canada Day I learned how to play the popular board game and for some reason it was a night that always stuck with me. I guess it brought out the good in the family. Maybe it sounds unpatriotic, but Canada Day is more to me than honoring our great country or dressing up in red and white waving a Canadian flag. Canada Day is one of those few holidays where little to no money is spent but good, lasting memories are made with family and friends. It’s also one of those occasions where communities like North Grenville and the surrounding area are brought together through parades, barbecues and fireworks. So put the wallet away, save the stress for another holiday and enjoy Canada’s 143rd birthday.

Mr. Pea has quite the life in Metcalfe. He struts around the street and stops traffic. He hangs out at people’s pools. He’s even been set up on a date – but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. The roughly five-foot long peacock has found a home in the small community in the last few years. While residents still pull out their cameras when they cross paths, it’s become part of Metcalfe. “It’s a community bird. Everyone seems to look out for it,” said resident Debbie McVey. McVey works at McVey Insurance on Victoria Street, which is among the feathered creature’s favourite hangouts. She saw the bird for the first time a couple of years ago from her office. It was enjoying the day in a neighbour’s backyard. “I did a double take,” she said. “I thought it was their pet.” Steve Wade, another Metcalfe resident, sometimes feeds the peacock when the bird makes his way over to his house. “One time, we heard a knock on the door and it was the peacock,” said Wade. “He must have knocked on the

door with his beak.” Wade said the bird makes the most noise when there are loud sounds, like sirens or a big truck driving by. The peacock got especially rowdy when Wade built his house five years ago. McVey, as well as other residents, believe the peacock is widowed and that might be another reason he makes so much noise. “I heard he had a partner, and he cries all the time,” she said. “It’s a distinct call like it’s calling out for the other bird. Or maybe that’s just what peacocks do.” A while ago, Wade’s neighbour traveled outside of Metcalfe to find the peacock a lady friend. But when Mr. Pea showed up and the female peacock was let loose, the sparks didn’t seem to fly. The female peacock darted down the driveway past Mr. Pea, determined to get home. “They didn’t even look each other in the eye,” said Wade. “She just continued her own way down the driveway.” In addition to trying to find Mr. Pea a girlfriend, Metcalfe residents have also been seen stopping traffic to let the peacock cross the street. Sharon Baird, another employee at McVey Insurance, said she’s heard quite a few stories about run-ins with the bird.

“A family came home one day and it was at the end of the driveway. It wouldn’t let them pull in,” she said. “Another day, it was on someone’s roof.” McVey said the large bird prefers to walk rather than fly, and doesn’t spread his wings too often. “But it’s pretty spectacular when he does,” she said. It’s believed that Mr. Pea might have escaped from a farm that has peacocks in a town just north of Metcalfe. But over the last 10 years or so, the loveable bird has made friends with the community and calls Metcalfe his home. “He’s a very friendly bird,” said Wade. “And he’s just part of the family.”

Mr. Pea takes a breather from wandering the streets of Metcalfe. He’s often seen hanging out in residents’ backyards and drinking from their pools. Overworked and under-trained Personal Support Workers struggle to provide the best care

As front-line workers in the overburdened long-term care system, PSWs are the first to see its problems. Given the chaos they experience every day, they want better training standards and other professional improvements that the province, so far, is rejecting.

SECOND IN A FOUR-PART SERIES

By Jillian Follert

W

hen the woman’s head hit the wall with a dull thud, Cathy’s blood ran cold. “I was just thinking, ‘oh my God, oh my God, what if I killed her?’” The 26-year-old was four months into her first job as a personal support worker at a Toronto long-term care home, when she left a frail, wisp of a 90-year-old Alzheimer’s patient with a bump on the head, after struggling to transfer her 100pound body from wheelchair to bed. “It’s partly my fault, because I probably should have asked for help,” Cathy said, crying as she remembers that day in 2008, and the nurse who called her an idiot. “But, I also think it’s not really my fault, because my school never taught me how to do transfers properly.” Cathy isn’t her real name. As was the case with most of the 30 PSWs interviewed for Situation Critical, Cathy agreed to tell her story, on condition that her name and the home she works at not be identified. She worries about being fired or blacklisted for speaking on situations that jeopardize care. PSWs are the most intimate point of contact for 75,000 elderly Ontarians living in government-supported nursing homes, helping with everything from feeding to toileting. The approximately 100,000 PSWs employed in various eldercare capacities in Ontario — about 30,000 work in nursing homes — toil at the bottom of the health care food chain, whether they work in long-term care facilities or at an individual’s home. They are in a struggle for legitimacy that has become more public as PSWs push the province harder for higher standards and concrete training requirements. It’s a losing battle. Health Minister Deb Matthews recently scrapped a round of public consultation on potential regulation of PSWs. She told Metroland she is “very much concerned” about PSW qualifications and the fact that training courses differ dramatically in length and content. “What I think is important, is there is a clear understanding of what training is required to call yourself a PSW,” Matthews said. “My understanding is that it varies tremendously.”

PSWs are the heartbeat of Ontario’s 625 nursing homes, responsible for up to 75 per cent of care. They bathe and dress residents, comb their hair and brush their teeth. They lift them in and out of beds and wheelchairs, and help those who can still use the toilet. They change diapers, spoon feed residents and reposition them to prevent bed sores. Increasingly, PSWs also tackle medically related tasks delegated by other overworked health professionals, including changing nitroglycerine patches and navigating chest drainage, feeding tubes and oxygen therapy. PSWs who spoke to Metroland said ratios can be as low as three or four PSWs to 50 or 60 residents. “You’re literally jogging from room to Alberta is currently the only province room, you have no time to talk to the reswith a standard where patients get 3.5 idents and spend time with them,” said hours of personal care per day. The work she does makes sure they end up in the types of facilities that will care for their physical and mental well being, so despite the crushing paperwork and long wait times, she feels satisfied in her career. But, concern that PSWs are not regulated or certified, coupled with media reports of infractions — a North Bay PSW, for example, was sentenced to house arrest this year for stealing an elderly resident’s credit card — have led to calls for the profession to go through an accountability overhaul. For the organizations working on behalf of PSWs, that means an Ontariowide PSW registry, uniform curriculum and clear-cut standards of practice. In the chaotic life of a PSW, time, wages, resources, training, support and respect are often in short supply. Without education standards, some new hires end up at a loss when they’re thrust into reallife situations — jeopardizing the care of fragile residents they oversee. “ ... when I got out there working, then I realized there’s some things I don’t know,” said Jen, who has been on the job for a year and completed a six-month adult-education course offered through a school board. “We didn’t spend much time on the proper terminology for certain illnesses or anything that can go wrong with the body. Even the CPR first aid course, I find myself having to go back and reread my book over again. Because I find myself in some situations where it’s like, ‘oh my God, it went too fast and now I don’t remember what to do in this situation.’” With files from Jennifer McIntosh

day. There were more than 190 students who passed by the internet camera in the school’s gym who waved to Sarah and wished her a happy birthday. Sarah and her mother were able to wave back from Sarah’s hospital room at CHEO. Lynn said that Sarah’s brother Matthew, sister Emma and cousin Warren are all students at the school and were also able to take part. Different classes created everything from a special birthday cake to a giant birthday card they were able to show Sarah over the internet.Throughout the assembly, Sarah answered some questions, laughed and waved. As the assembly end-

ed, each student walked by the camera to wave once more.Sarah was able to appear on the big screen set up at the school. “I think she thought it was pretty neat to be on the big screen,” said Lynn. “It really put a big smile on her face.” Sarah has gone through three sessions of chemotherapy since being diagnosed in April. Her next step will be to travel down to Toronto for a bone marrow transplant. Her sister Emma will be the one donating the bone marrow. Lynn said that the community and school has been extremely supportive. “Merrickville Public School is very much like a family,” she said.

Earlier this month on June 3, students at the Merrickville Public School shared birthday celebrations with Sarah Telford. Sarah, a student at the school, has been at CHEO for the past few months after being diagnosed with leukemia. This was her 12th birthday. The entire school, all of the teachers and students staged a special birthday party for Sarah, using modern technology to connect Sarah in Ottawa with her friends at the school in Merrickville. Speaking from Sarah’s hos-

pital room in Ottawa her mother Lynn said, “Sarah cannot leave the hospital so she could not have a regular birthday. All of the students wore orange which is the official colour for leukemia.” The school body was determined to do something special for Sarah. Using a free internet communications program called Skype, the staff at the school organized a school-wide assembly to wish Sarah happy birthday. They connected a laptop computer to a projector then connected to it a high –quality camera and microphone purchased by teacher Lorna Carley. Sarah was able to be at the school and with all of her friends on her special

Clowns were among the entertainment for more than 200 people who came to Riverside Park Saturday to celebrate the hospital’s anniversary.

KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com

On June 28, 1960, Kemptville finally had a hospital after years of fundraising and volunteering. That fundraising and volunteering spirit is still alive and on Saturday, June 26, the hospital held its 50th anniversary celebration at Riverside Park. “I’m very excited about today,” said Dermid O’Farrell as the sun slowly started to peek out. “There are lots of fun things going on here today.” O’Farrell, who is vice-president of the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation, said he gives back because the hospital is an important part of the community. “As we all get older, we will use it more,” said O’Farrell. “I hope that it continues to prosper, have great leadership and keep focus on the community that it serves.” While the day started with a bit of rain, the sun slowly came out. By the afternoon Riverside Park was filled with families enjoying the day.

The day included a volleyball tournament in the morning. As the day went on, a poker run started at noon with a children’s area opening in the afternoon. The children’s area included clowns, face painting and a teddy bear clinic. A barbecue and a 1960s-style dance at the North Grenville Curling Club later that night. A volunteer committee, chaired by Jim McManaman of Solution One Financial, spent months planning the event. “This is a culmination of thanking the whole community,” he said. “It’s open to kids and families, and open to everybody.” He added that volunteering and fundraising for the hospital will still continue for the next 50 years. “The community’s going to grow really fast,” McManaman said. The hospital’s CEO Colin Goodfellow also noted the hard work of the volunteer committee. “The volunteers have been working for months on this and they did just a great job,” he said.

“KDH has been a fixture in the community for the last 50 years and we’re looking forward to the next 50 years.” At the event, the hospital also held a 50th anniversary raffle with all proceeds going towards the purchase of medical equipment and technology at the Kemptville District Hospital. The Early Bird draw of a $500 gift certificate was drawn at the 60s dance on Saturday by volunteer Julie and sponsor Eric Norenberg. Tom Marchant and Sylvie Jonsson were the winners. There will also be a 50th Anniversary Raffle held on Sept. 15 at the KDH Foundation’s Corporate Gold Tournament with the grand prize of $10,000. Tickets for the raffle are available at Scotiabank and KDH Foundation. Linda Bell, director of the KDH Foundation and manager of hospital communications said the community has been an important part of the hospital’s success, with the spirit of volunteering that built the hospital 50 years ago, and the community’s current fundraising efforts. “Thank you for the last 50 years,” said Bell.

Special to the Advance

Merrickville’s 10th annual Cruise and Shop Car Show is coming up on July 11. This year’s event will take place at the Blockhouse Museum - located on the beautiful Rideau Canal, and will continue along Main Street to the Merrickville Community Centre and into the Fairgrounds. Some of the special 10th anniversary events include the live music of Eddy and the Stingrays. The Merrickville Fire Department will host an all-day barbecue which includes a breakfast and lunch and volunteers from the St. Ann Roman Catholic Church are available at the Community Centre offering all kinds of goodies. The Cruise and Shop Organizing Committee has arranged for Kilmarnock Orchards to provide a shuttle bus service to help you travel to each of the car shows. Don’t forget to stick around for the end of the show when all registered cars will travel cruisestyle through the Village of Merrickville to complete this year’s Cruise and Shop event. Bring your camera. For more information about the visit www. merrickvillecarshow.com or call Jim at 613-2693863. Jim Bonfield is a member of the Merrickville Cruise and Shop organizing committee.

Last month, many communities in North Grenville held garage sales. One street had a street garage sale and Veronica Fear, left, and Raine Lundy decided to have a bake sale too. They will be donating the proceeds to Team: “Mission Possible” for the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Their goal was to raise $55 and they raised $143.93 from their bake sale.

K. Wallace Photo/Advance Staff

The Kemptville Youth Centre gathered for a cheque presentation from the Kemptville branch of the Royal Bank worth $22,000. Representatives and children from the Kemptville and Area Youth Advocacy Committee gathered at the Kemptville Youth Centre to receive the cheque. Since 2006, the bank has provided $124,500 to the Kemptville and Area Youth Advocacy Committee as part of RBC’s After-School Grants program. These grants are used to provide youth with many activities such as sports, music, art lessons and literacy tutoring.
