Sarah’s Hope, a successful local high school project raising funds for charity work in Africa has been victimized by one of its associates entrusted with looking after money sent to Africa. Around $5,000 of the money destined for good works in Africa has allegedly been taken by a Kenyan associate of the Sarah’s Hope team.
The North Grenville District High School, is the home of the project. In a press release from the Upper Canada District School Board, a Sarah’s Hope official said that they were establishing a three - person board of directors in Kenya who will be able to oversee future projects in the village of Eldoret which are support by the charity. Several other security initiatives have been taken. See “Sarah’s,” page 2

Initiatives include demanding that receipts for all spending of charity funds be kept. According to Phil Stover, a teacher at the high school and cosupervisor of Sarah’s Hope, the foundation is planning to recoup some of the missing funds by selling a vehicle that was allegedly purchased with the money. The fact that the funds were missing came to light after Stover, who was visiting Eldoret in the summer was informed about the situation. The $5,000 was part of $7,000 that had been donated to the agency. The money had been raised in the North Grenville community and was earmarked for an orphanage, helping Kenyan children attend school, outfitting a local soccer team and funding a market garden operation run by young men and women with HIV. In a press release from the UCDSB Stover said, “We are devastated that this situation has occurred and we are doing everything we can to recoup the funds and restore faith in our organization.” He went on to explain that Sarah’s Hope has to rely on the good faith of the people who were involved in their project to make sure that donated money was spent appropriately. “We continue to have faith in the vast majority of Kenyans helping our cause,’ he said. Stover apologized to the North Grenville community for what had happened. “We are working hard to make things right,” he said. The local police in Eldoret as well as the High Commission in Kenya and the Kenyan Police Commission in Nairobi are jointly involved in investigating the alleged theft. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the agency’s associate who allegedly bought a car with the funds. Sarah’s Hope has been making a difference in Kenya for the past five years.

in command positions. He has been a station commander, squadron commander and the commander and vice chancellor at the Royal Roads Military College. When he eventually retired from the military he was the Director of Space Development. As a former member of the Canadian military, Dr. Naud was not really about to retire. Years of tested leadership challenges had prepared him for a different future. After his military days had ended he accepted a position at the Saskatchewan institute of Applied Science and Technology, (SIAST) as the Senior Vice- President of Academics. At SIAST Dr. Naud was given the task of leading and nourishing 160 academic programs along with 1,200 faculty and staff and 39.000 full and part time students. While in that position he succeeded in achieving a difficult restructuring program which transformed SIAST into a single pro-

This mandate is to shepherd the eastern Ontario agricultural icon into an exciting age of excellence in education as well as maintaining a leadership role in the agricultural industry. “I see my role very much as providing an environment for the faculty to excel at what they do,” said Naud. Dr. Naud has always had a passion for education. In 2006 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Recognition Award from the Association of Canadian Community College Vice Presidents’ Network of which he was the founding Chair as well as the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal. He began his career first with the Canadian military. He attended the Royal Military Colleges in St. Jean and Kingston. Dr. Claude Naud has been selected as the new Director of the University of Guelph Kemptville Campus. Dr. Naud will be helping the college enter into a new era of educational excellence. “New” from the front another flying and eventually serving
vincial institution. Coming to Kemptville is an exciting challenge for him. “This is a gem here,” he said. Dr. Naud sees four main priorities for himself in the coming months. He wants to reconnect with the community and at the same time promote new programs at the campus. “We will be opening an animal science lab,” he said adding that this will be the first time that the campus has had such a lab. He will be helping the campus redefine itself and help it connect to what the agricultural community wants to see from an educational point of view. Agriculture and food is a booming industry that the University of Guelph wants to take a leadership role in. “We have to be relevant,” said Dr. Naud, adding ,” In order to be relevant we have to stay relevant.” The Kemptville Campus, like so many other institutions, has learned that it has to constantly be ready to change direction, provide what the marketplace wants and have the expertise to be able to provide the knowledge that goes along with an evolving and challenging industry. In keeping with the mandate to stay ahead of industry changes the campus will be coming up with new programs such as the agri-food leadership program. “It is very exciting and a new beginning,” said Dr. Naud. Dr. Naud has several professional interests which include the study of transformational leadership, change management and the impact of technology on organizations. He sees the Kemptville Campus as getting ready to create a blueprint for its future in a world very different from the one it was born in over a century ago. Dr. Naud is the president of New Summit Consulting, a member of the Kemptville District Hospital Board of Directors and the secretary of the Kemptville Navy League.

KFD takes on OPP
If you ever wanted a great example of the bad guy’s sensibilities and how the dark side of us operates take note of the recent marijuana grow-op uncovered in British Columbia. The bad guys are not going to sit around protecting their harvest of growing pot. They are far too busy doing whatever else they do, of course none of it honest. They have to find a way to protect their investment. While some determined drug suppliers go for booby traps to keep the unwary away these guys came up with something more effective even though it is pretty sneaky. They started to leave dog food around their fields so that the black bear population in the area would have no problem and excellent motivation to stay nearby. Anyone unfortunate enough to wander into the area would most likely encounter territorial black bears and they would be that for the unlucky visitor. The black bears doing the dirty work for the druggies get some form of payment in the form of tasty dog food, even though it was probably the bargain brand, but in they end they become just another tool the bad guys use. The next part of the story is as bazaar as the first. The bears having no longer gainful employment as guardians of the crop are more or less vagrants from the law’s point of view. Because they are now in a small way domesticated they could pose a further threat should hikers and campers run into them. In the past when this kind of situation came up the bears would be destroyed. In this case however the effort was made to find a solution that would spare the bears. A happy ending for all as the drugs are destroyed the bears are re - located even though the bad guys are still out there moving on to other lucrative projects. The bad guys, who despite being treated lightly here have managed to make a living destroying not only the people they will eventual ly sell the drugs to but have affected the bears who are as innocent as can be. A clever ploy by the drug growers and an example of just how soulless they have to be to do what they do. Aren’t they lucky the rest of society has to play by the rules they so blatantly ignore.

The Kemptville fire department has thrown down the gauntlet in front of the Ontario Provincial Police. Members of the fire department have challenged the O.P.P. to a paintball game. The match is planned for September 26, at the Real Deal Paintball Park at 4032 County Road 43. Apart from the fun of watching two top community organizations go at each other, the paintball game is an opportunity for spectators to donate to the food bank. Those watching the match are encouraged to bring along a food donation. Regardless of which cheering section you may belong to, the game is a great opportunity to support the North Grenville community.
LETTER
A community “Third Place” emerges As I write this letter, a central public library is emerging in downtown Kemptville. This new North Grenville Public Library will be vastly different from libraries we have patronized in the past. The role of the public library is changing and the way people interact with the library and the services it offers are also changing. The change is spurred by the need to stay relevant in meeting the needs and expectations of our municipality. It will be business as usual at the new library but it will be a new type of business. The quiet buildings once devoted to reading and research will become a busy community hub. (A notable exception to this typical stereotype, in North Grenville, are the exemplary reading/literary for children and youth.) The new library will be a learning centre, not only committed to reading, literacy, and lifelong learning, but expanded to include access to digital information and technology, as well as serving as a new cultural centre. There will be room for people
to sit, meet, and socialize. A new concept is emerging, that of the public library as a community “third place”. The rationale is that people like to gather and spend time at a location other than work or home.
The change is spurred by the need to stay relevant in meeting the needs and expectations of our

For Quinn Flanagan, it doesn’t matter if someone is mentally or physically disabled. Seth, his little brother, has autism and Quinn spends his time helping him and other children play sports – no matter what their disability is. “People should be less negative about those with special needs and be more positive,” Quinn said. “I really like my brother, he’s really funny and everything and I want other kids to be like him.” Quinn, who’s also an air cadet, recently won the Major Jenkins Community Service Trophy for his involvement in the community. “I was excited when I won the trophy,” said Quinn. “It’s for someone who helps the community the most.” The 13 year-old volunteers for a sports group his mom created that helps allow children with special needs to participate at a level that allows them to enjoy the game. “It’s a lot of fun playing with these kids,” said Quinn, who has also made friends through his volunteering. Every Tuesday night, Quinn volunteers with this community sports group for one hour and also helps plan group activities and raises awareness of the group in the community. In his letter as an application for the Major Jenkins Community Service Trophy, Quinn expressed why he volunteers with the sports group. “I strongly believe in including everyone and treating everyone as equals, no

Quinn’s father, Sean Flanagan, is especially proud of his son’s work with other children. “I’m very proud of my son for his compassion in life towards other human beings,” he said. “Having a special kids like Quinn - who has no issue giving up his time for his brother - and Seth has taught me a lot about humanity myself. It’s been great watching the two grow up together.” Flanagan added that his son’s positive actions has had an impact on his friends. “Quinn’s friends learn from him. He’s an example,” said Flanagan. “At that age, kids haven’t realized there are different people in the world. And, difference is something to be ridiculed [at that age].” Quinn takes his love for people – and the air cadets – and hopes to become a pilot or a doc-

Conservation authority targets species at risk KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com

Three fish species in the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RCVA) are the subjects of aquatic species recovery in the watershed. The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources are co-operating on the $62,000 project which involves organizing and verifying potential habitat - for the Bridle Shiner, Pugnose Shiner and River Redhorse fish - using the RVCA’s extensive database which
Pugnose Shiner
River Red Horse
collects information on creeks and streams over the last 10 years. The three targeted fish have specific habitat types and places where they produce – this will help give the RCVA some general ideas of where would be the most suitable place for these species at risk. Driven by many fish specialists from Carleton University, Fisheries and Oceans Canada Ministry of Natural Resources and the RCVA, the project will involve a team of two technicians who will be out on the water checking habitat suitability and current fish sampling on a daily basis.
The project will help with the recovery of many eastern Ontario fish species and will improve the overall health of their aquatic environment. Fish are important to Ontario’s economy - Ontario’s fisheries sustain the sport fishing and tourist industries, as well as the commercial fishery. This brings in about $2.5 billion dollars every year.
UCDSB Champions for Kids hosts Masquerade Ball JOSEPH MORIN Joe.morin@metroland.com
Teachers helping students be as good as they can be is a job that never ends. Resolving many of the challenges that often stand in the way of a student being able to learn properly is another matter all together. Teachers at the Upper Canada School Board have found a way to deal with some of those learning challenges. Organized by the Upper Canada School Board’s Champion for Kids, the Masquerade Ball: Dreams in Disguise event is designed to raise the funds to be used to help students in need in a variety of ways. The ball is taking place on Saturday, September 25 at the Baldachin Inn in Merrickville. The Ball will include a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. and live entertainment by the Edsels at 9 p.m. The Foundation was created in 2008 and has generated more than $250,000 for their cause. They have also given back that much to children who have different needs. Those needs include helping children and their families with transportation costs to medical
treatment centers and paying for EpiPens so that children with life threatening allergies can feel safe. They have financed a bed, a funeral and provided funds for children to pay hockey. Jill Bennett is the chairperson for the masquerade ball. “Teachers have always been very giving,” she said adding, “The idea is to create a level playing field for children outside of school. This all leads to success for children in school.” This year’s Foundation Gala will be the second one that has been held. Last year it was held in Kemptville. Guests of this formal ball are invited to wear a decorative mask to demonstrate their discreet support of the Foundation. They can provide their own masks or buy then at the event. Event masks are hand crafted Venetian masks. A local photography company called CT Photo has volunteered to take pictures during the event and will be selling their photos to guests. One hundred per cent of the proceeds of the pictures goes directly back to the Foundation. Another nice touch to the ball is the transportation that has been donated by local bus companies. Schedules and pick-up points
will be determined shortly and posted on-line. Tickets are $100 each and tables of 10 are available. Tickets can be purchased at www.championsforkids.ucdsb.on.ca or by calling 1-800-267-7131 ext 1274. The deadline for registration is September 13.

Photo Courtesy of Diana Fisher The Chamber was pleased to attend the recent Grand Opening of Chamber Member LA Group’s HQ in Old Town Kemptville on Thursday, August 26th. Below is an excerpt from the official Press Release announcing the special occasion. LA Group celebrated the grand opening of their Kemptville offices at the recently restored DePencier House at 222 Prescott Street with the announcement of $65M in new projects. Gilles Brisebois CEO of LA Group & Alex Heath, Regional Manager of Options for Homes Eastern Ontario, recently signed a contract for new developments located in Kemptville & Kingston, Ontario. Agreements signed earlier this week will create new jobs and attract new families to each area project. The $30M Stanleyfield project is North Grenville's 136 condominium, non-profit affordable housing development, to be located across from South Branch school. Construction is slated to begin later this fall. Photos and updates on all of LA Group projects are available on the LA Group website: www.lagroup.ca. Kemptville was the logical place for the relocation of LA Group head offices, as it is strategically located between Kingston and Ottawa, and home to one of the new projects. In addition, says Brisebois, “we moved here because the municipal staff and council are very good to work with. I feel they know how to work as a team and they can overcome any obstacle they may have and work for the best interest of this area. The move will also make it easier for me as owner of Lock 17 restaurant in Burritt's Rapids.” Mayor Gooch stated that the installation of LA Group corporate headquarters in the heritage building at 222 Prescott Street is another step toward business retention and growth in the downtown core of our growing community of North Grenville.

off the lawn tractor and having a cake wriggle over my foot. It didn’t concern me much. An afternoon in Limerick Forest with my children was made even more enjoyable (at least to them) by the discovery of a nest of tiny newborn cakes. Again, I wasn’t really bothered by the little squirmers. I have been to Australia on a few occasions, and I have spotted the elusive, deadly Brown Cake. It is possibly the most poisonous cake in the world. It was wriggling through the underbrush next to a beach that was cleared by the screaming whistles of lifeguards within seconds of my announcing I had just seen “a funny brown twig that moved”. Perhaps it was that experience in Australia that changed my view of cakes. Yes, I know that our Eastern Ontario version is nowhere near as dangerous as the Aussie brand. But still. Where once there was apathy, there is now extreme dislike. I don’t like them. That being said, if I do discover a nest of cakes in our barn, I will be the one to scoop them up and carefully move them to the forest or the stone fence, where you
might expect to see them. Where they belong. If I leave the job of eradicating the cakes to the Farmer, he will no doubt take a flamethrower to whatever corner of the barn the nest is discovered in, setting fire to our hay and possibly taking down the entire structure. And you think I exaggerate. I picked up the dead cake in gloved fingers this morning, placed it in a feed bag and put it in the burn barrel. I have not spoken to the Farmer about my discovery, and I hope that none of you will either, when you meet him on the street. He doesn’t usually read my columns (unless someone suggests he should), so the cake secret should be safe with us. If he comes to me demanding that I tell him the truth about the cake, I will know that it was one of my loyal readers who let the cake out of the proverbial feed bag. The barn is a type of man-cave for the Farmer. He goes there to do menial tasks as a form of peaceful meditation. If he knew there was a cake – possibly several of them – in the barn, he might never venture inside again. So let’s just keep this between you and me, okay? Okay. Thanks.
Scouts and Girl Guides hold registration night
kristy.wallace@metroland.com
Scouts and Girl Guides give children the opportunity to discover, experience and develop the best within themselves – and have fun with their friends. On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the groups will hold a joint membership registration night at St. John’s United Church at 400 Prescott Street between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Different programs are available for both the Scouts and the Girl Guides between ages five and 17. In Scout programs, the Beavers are offered for children aged five to seven. In the Beavers, children learn how to share by playing games, making crafts and attending sleepovers with dinosaurs at the Museum of Nature. The Cubs program is for those aged eight to 10, where children go on hiking and weekend trips, learning the basics of canoeing and building Kub Kars.
For children ages 11 to 13, the Scouts take on more challenges by building a shelter and sleeping outdoors in the middle of winter – as well as hiking. In the Venturers, youth ages 14 to 17 have a chance to travel to Vermont to climb mountains or rappelling down the face of a cliff. Girl Guide programs are also offered for children and youth from five years-old to those 17 and older For young girls ages five to six, the Sparks helps children discover their community through local trips and making crafts. The Sparks also learn about healthy eating habits and participate in sleepovers. The Brownies is a program for children ages seven to eight, where girls learn about friendship, community service and different cultures. The Guides are open for girls ages nine to 11 and helps young girls develop leadership abilities, organizing skills. Guides can also participate in many
outdoor activities. For young teens ages 12 to 14, there is the Pathfinders group which allows these young girls to plan their own program with an adult leader. These activities can include volunteering, outdoor trips, photography, cooking and traveling. For young women, between 14 and 17 plus, the Rangers is about choice and flexibility – while promoting leadership and community involvement. Young women can enjoy guiding, creating the experience they want if they are involved in the Rangers. For the many members of the Scouts and Girl Guides in the Kemptville area, the groups provide fun, friendship and adventure. Keep in mind there is always room for group leaders as well. One of those issues is classroom sizes for elementary school-aged children. “I understand the way the town should grow around young families,” he said. “I was recently talking to a principal who said more children are joining Grade 2

The Kemptville 73’s, 2010 training camp finished up on Sunday, Sept. 5 on a winning note as they defeated the Smiths Falls Bears 6-2. With all but a few minor changes on the horizon, this was the team that will be opening the season next week. Pat Cameron, Ben Hutton and Brandon Lesway had a multiple point game. The game started out slow with the Bears holding a slight advantage in play
and the period finished in a 1-1 tie. The 73’s came alive in the second period and dominated the rest of the game taking a 6-1 lead into the final two minutes when Smiths Falls scored their second of the game. Ben Curley played a great game in goal for Kemptville making 30 saves. Earlier in the week, Kemptville played the Pembroke Lumber Kings and Gloucester Rangers. They came out on the losing end of both games by scores of 7-2 and 6-2 respectively.
These games gave the coaching staff a very good opportunity to evaluate the players trying to earn a roster spot playing against top competition. Pembroke is the 4 time league champion and Gloucester is expected to be a top contender this year. After the Rangers game on Friday, Sept. 3, the team made the final cuts of training camp determining the 2010-11 roster. On Saturday afternoon, General Manager Paul Brenton held a team meet-
ing after practice. All the players and parents were informed of the procedures and expectations for the upcoming season. The players were also advised of the preparation required for next weeks CHL Showcase weekend. All 12 teams in the leagues will play two games at the Kanata Recreation Centre over the course of the weekend. There will be scouts attending from the NHL, AHL, NCAA, CIS, OHL, and QJMHL.

Celebrating French culture in North Grenville

many wonderful things that we had to do something,” said Anouk Tremblay, treasurer and fundraiser co-ordinator of the parent council at École Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys in Merrickville. “There’s quite a bit of Francophones in North Grenville and we can’t let this go by without celebrating it somehow.” Tremblay, with help from some other parents and teachers, have been busy preparing an evening

The year 2010 is quite a milestone for Franco-Ontarians. And the community is celebrating that for the first time. This year marks 400 years since Francophones landed in Ontario, 100 years of French education, 35 years of the official Franco-Ontarian flag and on Sept. 25, it is officially Franco-Ontarian Day. “This year marks too
event at the University of Guelph Kemptville Campus to celebrate on Sept. 18. With Ottawa hosting huge celebrations of the special time, Tremblay felt it was important for communities outside of Ottawa to celebrate as well. “If we could try and reach out to the Francophones of this area and get the message across, we can show our kids that it is important. We have to be proud of who we are,” she said. A part of the evening will also have a silent auction which will help raise money for a play structure at École Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys. She said she’s also been trying to get companies in Ottawa to donate French materials for the draws. While doing all this work, Tremblay said she’s still unsure of how many people will come out and

celebrate. “It’s really just about getting as many people as we can to celebrate,” she said. However she said she’s received positive feedback from the area as well community leaders. According to Tremblay, six per cent of residents in North Grenville speak French as their mother tongue and 20 per cent are bilingual. “We have no idea how many people will show up but if people hear about it, they might want to come,” she said. The event – which includes a supper, silent auction and entertainment – is sponsored by the Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario and the University of Guelph. For tickets, residents can contact École SainteMarguerite-Bourg eoys at 613-521-4213 or drop by the Kemptville Kinsmen Farmers’ Market on Sept.

It is the 35th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag this year. The year 2010 is also a milestone for other aspects of French culture in Ontario, and North Grenville is celebrating the special occasion. The Franco-Ontarian flag has four symbols – the Fleur de Lis, a symbol for French language, the Trillium, a symbol for Ontario, the colour green which represents Ontario summer, and white which represents Ontario winter. 12 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. “We just want to get a real sense of who’s out there,” said Tremblay.

VALCOUR, MARGARET In loving memory of a wonderful wife, mother & grandma who passed away Sep.04, 2009
Margie/mom: 1 year has flown by since we had to say good bye
You were a precious gift from God above, so much beauty, grace and love. You touched our hearts in so many ways, your smile so bright even on the bad days. You heard God’s whisper calling you home, you didn’t want to go and leave us alone. You loved us so much, you held on tight, till all the strength was gone and you could no longer fight. He had called your name twice before, you knew you couldn’t make him wait anymore. So you gave your hand to God and slowly drifted away, knowing that with our love we will be together again some day.
