RIDING THE RIDEAU Last weekend the Ride the Rideau event took place from Landsdowne Park in Ottawa to Merrickville. The cancer research fundraising event took in participants who collected a minimum of $1,500 in pledges. Cyclists, who were greeted by bystanders waving signs and blowing whistles, slowly poured in and crossed the finish line in Merrickville. ty of being diverse.” Barb Tobin was the only councillor initially in favour of the idea. “I am not bilingual but I have a French maiden name,” said Tobin. “I think there are many facets to the Canadian population and I have no problem recognizing all of them.” Gooch will be attending the Franco-Ontarian celebrations on Sept. 18 and will receive the flag which will be displayed the week of Sept. 20. The three flags that currently fly at
the North Grenville Municipal Centre are Canada’s flag, the province of Ontario and North Grenville. Occasionally, the North Grenville council will decide to replace a flag with one that honours a charitable organization. Council is in the process of developing a policy for which types of flags can be displayed on the outdoor poles. The flag, which is 35 years old, is an official Ontario flag. GRANNIES BIKE FOR GRANNIES
After initially rejecting the idea that the Franco-Ontarian flag to be raised at the municipal centre, North Grenville council has decided to fly it indoors during Franco-Ontarian week at the end of the month. “So we’re closet Francophones?” said Anouk Tremblay when she learned of the decision early Tuesday morning. “But it’s good I guess. It’s better than nothing.” Residents Tremblay and Clarice Lulai Angi were recently turned down when they approached Gooch asking to raise the Franco-Ontarian flag at the end of the month. Last week Mayor Bill Gooch and the majority of members of council unofficially declined to raise a flag honouring an important time for French Ontarians. “To me, flying [the] flag is a very political statement speaking to objectives some of which I don’t fully agree with,” said Gooch. “I am also not someone who will go along with the herd simply in the interest of votes or political correctness.” On Monday night, Gooch said the council agreed on a compromise that the flag would fly in the main lobby of the municipal centre. Gooch said flying it alongside the Ontario and Canadian flags would be too political. “I’m very hopeful people of French descent will see it as a good way of dealing with it,” said Gooch. “We’re doing what we think is best, and we think it’s an acceptable compromise.” Tremblay and Angi successfully approached other municipalities with the same request. They said North Grenville was the only municipality that opposed the idea. “I just want to celebrate the other half of Canada,” Angi said last week. “It’s the beau-

ing the battle that raged from Aug. 15 to the 25, 1917. Ironically the only piece of armament at the memorial is a small weathered German machine gun apparently from the actual battle. The battle for Hill 70 has been referred to by historians as the Forgotten Battle of the First World War. The Mountain and District Lions Club feel that the memorial is unacceptable considering how many Canadian soldiers lost their lives there. The reputation of Canadian soldiers around the world was secured at the battle. The SD&G Highlanders fought at Hill 70 and it was there that their Battle Honours were won. The memorial was rededicated last October by the 154th Overseas Battalion (Highlanders) Canadian Expeditionary Force. The Highlanders, after Hill 70 also won Battle Honours for their participation at Ypres in 1917, Arras in 1918, Pursuit To Mons, the Hindenburg Line and Amiens. The Hill 70 committee includes Don Johnston who is the chair for the group. He attended the rededication ceremony last year and was disappointed in how he found the memorial. “I was sick about it, he remembers. He took his concerns to the next Mountain and District Lions Club meeting. The result was a determination on the part of the Lions Club to fundraise at
least $50,000 to refurbish and redesign the small area of the park that is dedicated to Hill 70.The first step is to get the word out, said Johnston. He pointed out that close to 9,000 Canadian soldiers died at Hill 70 over a 10-day period. Ironically the battle for Hill 70 was the first time that Canadian soldiers were led by a Canadian general, General Arthur Currie. The memorial at the park is the only one of its kind in Canada. What the club imagines for the memorial is a raised stone platform with the two stones that are already there and which were laid down in 1922 to commemorate the site standing on either side of a larger stone describing Hill 70 and its significance. They would also need to do some paving and rearranging of the actual grounds at the site. “I would like to make this a place where people could come and reflect on what happened, said Johnston. There are scores of soldiers who were killed during the battle for Hill 70 who lived in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry County. They came from Berwick, Cornwall, Alexandria, Morewood, and Mountain. The Mountain Memorial Park was originally opened in 1925 even though the Hill 70 memorial had been set up in 1922. At the time, the park was the centre of the universe for
residents in the area. There were swings for children, hockey games and schools held their fall fairs at the park. There were even pheasants wandering around the park. Visitors were able to take a stroll on the trails surrounding the park. The Mountain and District Lions Club Hill Restoration Committee also includes Dermid O’Farrell, Bob Weagant, Gary Ruyf, Ian McKelvie and Bob Fraser. The Battle of Hill 70 came between the historic Vimy Ridge and Passchendasle. The Canadians had been ordered to take the French city of Lens captured by Germany at the beginning of the war. The town was known for its coal producing factories. Currie did not feel that a frontal assault of the town was worth the lives it would cost so instead he suggested that the Canadians take Hill 70 and force the German soldiers to flee the town. The Canadians stormed the hill on August 15, 1917. They won their battle quickly and settled down to fight off the German counter attacks that followed. In the end the Canadians prevailed. Four Victoria Crosses were given out and the German high command was shocked that troops from a foreign country like Canada could have bested their veteran soldiers.

What began as wishing for a sick brother to be well has mushroomed into a heartfelt demonstration of giving back for 10 year old Alexi Arbour of Kemptville. As his tenth birthday came up on September 10, he decided to do something different. He had invited all of his friends and family to come to his birthday party. The party would feature games, a barbecue and even an inflatable bouncing
castle for all of his friends to enjoy. Alexi has asked everyone invited to his party to bring along a donation to CHEO instead of a birthday present. The request was one that surprised his parents Luc and Natalie. “Our children have always been very giving,” said mom Natalie, “but this is something we are very proud of Alexi doing.” Alexi has a brother and sister. His brother Nickolas had to spend some time at CHEO at one point last year and Alexi and his sis-
ter Carrollynn went there to see him. While there, Alexi was confronted with children of all ages who were incredibly sick and needed cheering up. After Nickolas was finished with his time at the hospital, Alexi, after talking
things over with his parents decided that he would like to do something to help those other children who had to make use of the hospital. Alexi expected around 80 to 85 people to arrive for his birthday.

Each one had been sent an invitation that asked them to consider making a monetary donation to CHEO instead of buying him a birthday present. Alexi had even taken the time to arrange the donations with officials at CHEO. “The response has been very confident,” said Natalie. “It started with friends and family and now it has snowballed.” Both Luc and Natalie are proud of their children. “We know that we have really good kids,” said Luc. Natalie explained how when she was going into CHEO to see Nicolas with Alexi and Carrollynn they passed a small baby that was being moved. She remembers thinking how sobering it was to see children who were sick and how lucky her family was to have healthy children. On Saturday, Alexi raised $800.

North Grenville Wall of Fame
Too many questions Every now and again you run across something that you feel you will never understand. The short-lived debate over the flying of the Franco-Ontarian flag, on its anniversary on September 25, for a few days at the municipal centre is one of them. Respecting French Canadian history and character in Ontario has not always been easy considering the lack of respect the English element has been given in Quebec. The separatist environment, while fading with time, still manages to flop about like a dying fish. Don’t forget either the anti French attitude of the last century in English Canada which surely demonstrates that two wrongs never make a right. The North Grenville Council chose to make a Solomon-like decision and split the flag issue down the middle. The flag will indeed fly at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on September 25, but not outside the municipal centre for all to see. According to the powers that be, the Franco-Ontarian reality has been established and sanctioned by the province of Ontario as well as the Federal government. Flying their flag during their week should not be a problem unless of course flying the flag opens the door to something we all do not know about but council members do. When the North Grenville Council decided to create a compromise instead of granting flag supporters their original wish, there was no explanation given other than they were making a statement. It would be interesting to hear just what that statement is. Are they against bilingualism and the duality of Canada, the existence of the two solitudes so to speak? Have they lumped the Franco-Ontarians into some universal category which allows them to dismiss Franco-Ontarians as just another minority group? Is the flag issue synomonous with seperatist semntiments ? The council’s decision has some sense behind it but the trick is to find it.

To hell with manners… except in the country Recently I had to get rid of my VIP cable package, and I wasn’t too happy about it. Being the occasional couch potato, I was upset I’d be losing all my good channels. However this past weekend, having limited channels worked in my favour when I flipped to a show called To Hell With Manners! The Decline of Civility – a documentary by awardwinning Montreal filmmaker John Curtin. Travelling around North America and the United Kingdom, the filmmaker proves how disrespectful society has become in the modern western world. This was something I always personally wondered about. I was starting to think that I was the only one who was fed up with holding doors open for people in downtown Ottawa and not hearing a “thank you,” or was tired of having a conversation with someone whose eye was half on their cellphone or Blackberry. But if someone made a documentary about it, it must be a western cultural epidemic.
KRISTY WALLACE In this documentary, Curtin looks at the disrespect people have towards one another in today’s western big cities, and blames it on technology. And he couldn’t be more correct. In the documentary, he explained how technology like emails, blogs, or comment pages on websites allows us to have no social filter. In other words, we write things over the Internet that we would never say in person, or to the same degree. Since everything – including information - is instant in today’s “big city” society, we’ve been spoiled in getting everything at the click of a button and in turn, get angry if we have to wait for anything longer than a second. While the filmmaker only included this phenomenon happening in bigger cities, it’s an important lesson to those in North Grenville and rural Ottawa – especially areas that are expected to expand and beVice-President & Regional Publisher Chris McWebb chris.mcwebb@metroland.com Regional General Manager John Willems john.willems@metroland.com

come more urbanized over the years. People like to live in the country and small communities because it’s generally polite, laid back and everyone knows each other. It’s just the social atmosphere that goes along with country life. It’s actually, in a way, refreshing to meet people who don’t know how to use Facebook or Twitter. Here in North Grenville, municipal candidates actually welcome the public to call them at home – or even come visit them at home - instead of posting press releases on a website. As a journalist, it’s fantastic to call up a candidate and ask them real questions instead of getting the reply all of us journalists loathe, “check our website.” Politeness and courtesy is here right now, but with urbanization right around the corner it’s a value that might soon be lost. And while maintaining green spaces and the area’s historical character is important, we must remember that the refreshing attitude people in North Grenville share is just as important in maintaining our identity.

The process would also save considerable time and tax dollars. Presently, issues require staff report(s) to committee and then to
Kemptville Advance - SEPTEMBER 16, 2010
After advocating the Borough governance model for several years, I feel somewhat vindicated in my efforts to bring decision-making on local issues back to local residents. This governance model is the way of the future in large cities such as Ottawa. Those who have little understanding of issue(s) make far too many local decisions “downtown”. And this is mainly due to an ever-increasing workload in all wards. Thus, I have been promoting, “Communities ought to

day is a slap in the face,” he said. “But at the same time, it’s rewarding because you recognize the value of what you’re doing because you realize how passionate these kids are about education.” Since the organizations is strictly student-run, Vandermeer said he will be passing the torch to the next generation of students who will be taking over once he’s finished his master’s degree. “I will still play a role in the organization and other graduates will too. But I do want to keep it student-based because there are no organizations that go after students,” he said. Vandermeer is currently in Uganda for three months doing school-related research and plans to do his research on weekdays - continuing to work for the organization on weekends. In October, his mother Beth is hosting a Fall Bargain Blowout in Kemptville at Saint John’s United Church as a fundraiser for the organization. “I’m a realistic in knowing that building a school here and there won’t change the world overnight. Nothing will change the world overnight,” he said. “But I’m passionate about providing opportunities for Canadian students and hoping they’ll keep the passion about it as well.”

It’s all about students helping students. That’s what 22 year-old Craig Vandermeer had in mind when he started up Schools Building Schools - a student-run international organization helping students in Africa get a proper education. “The reason we want university or college students is because they are the leaders of tomorrow,” said Vandermeer. “If you get them involved in development early in their years, they’ll still care about those issues.” Vandermeer started up Schools Building Schools last year after he got back from Africa volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. He said he and a friend from Carleton University, where he received his undergraduate degree in political science, got together and talked about forming the organization – which now has charitable status and has grown to have a presence in Vancouver, Ottawa and most recently the University of Arkansas. The organization helps university students do taxes, prepare invoices as well as other skills that show them how to be
and trade schools. “I’ve seen how many students they pack into buildings, and it’s not a great learning environment. During rainy season, they have to close because it’s so dilapidated,” said Vandermeer. “The reason we got interested in vocational skills training is because these schools target underprivileged youth whose parents died of AIDS, conflict and other diseases. If you don’t have parents in an African country, you’re going to be poor and you can’t pay to go to school.” Vandermeer said there are many challenges, as well as rewards, when arriving in Africa and coming face-to-face with these children. He remembers living in a mud hut in Zambia while volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and walking to the local school two hours away with the children who still wanted to attend even though their teachers were on strike. Even though they had limited materials, children still wanted to learn. Vandermeer added the poor living conditions made his contributions challenging, but in the end it was worth it. “You have to throw out what you know about general basics of life and start over. Not having electricity or a shower every-

while on a cycling trip in Cuba in 2007. She met three women from Victoria, BC who had started their own three-day bike event for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Each rider was encouraged to raise $500 for this first-ever event held by the Grassroot Grannies. Because of the event’s overwhelming success this year, the bike ride is expected to become an annual event. “We’re enjoying our retirement but we can also give back, and we have lots of energy,” said Hough. Sue Cousineau is a founding member of the Grassroot Grannies, which was formed in 2006. She said she wanted to help African grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren because of the struggles they endure every day. “At a senior age, it’s the same ailments our senior women in Canada have - like arthritis. But on top of that, they’re living in poverty,” said Cousineau. “Most are illiterate, poor, living in conditions that have no water and new sewage, and in Uganda, no electricity.”

Connie Renaud liked the idea of riding her bike from Kanata to Metcalfe, and then back again. “I love to cycle and I love to stay fit,” said Renaud. The 70 year-old has been bicycling for the past 30 years, and was one of 20 women who participated in the Ride to Turn the Tide bike-a-thon fundraiser for the Grassroot Grannies which fundraises for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. All proceeds went to African grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren who are AIDS orphans. “I was aware of organization but not in this fashion,” said Renaud. “Taking part in this makes me feel good. We’ve made a difference and I’d do it again.” The original goal of the bike-a-thon was to raise $10,000 – so far they’ve raised $18,683 and their new goal is $20,000. “It’s fantastic,” said Nancy Hough who organized the bike-a-thon, and is a member of the Grassroot Grannies. “I never thought we’d make as much as we have.” Hough got the idea for this fundraiser

Cousineau adds gender inequalities also have an impact on these grandmothers, who don’t have the right to vote and live in some polygamous societies. There are about 240 grandmother groups across Canada, and these groups help give these African grandmothers new homes, access to medical care and education for their orphaned grandchildren. “We also provide eaves troughs and rain barrels to collect the water because it’s too long for them to walk to a well that’s five kilometres away,” said Cousineau. The group rode around the community on their second day, Sept. 9, traveling 116km to Perth, Rideau Ferry, Merrickville, Osgoode and Metcalfe – stopping for lunch at the Merrickville United Church. On their final day, the grannies traveled home from Metcalfe to Kanata. “There are some sore butts,” laughed Hough during their stop in Merrickville. However, Hough said the long bike ride doesn’t compare to what African grandmothers have to endure. “People think we’re doing such a great thing. I say to participants that their challenge is over in three days, but the challenge [for these African grandmothers] is forever.”

Market every Sunday. These farmers are doing more than just raising their product and shipping it off to market. Perhaps they don’t have fulltime day jobs elsewhere. I don’t know how they find the time, but I admire their entrepreneurial attitude. The story of the wine-fed cows also makes me smile because, according to the Sezmu farmers, the wine keeps the cows happy. They are constantly mooing after feeding, which is something they never did before. Apparently they are so loud with their drunken song, the farmers have switched their wine feeding to morning so that the bovine merry-making doesn’t keep the humans up all night. The wine is bought from local wineries, and if you’ve ever had B.C. wine you know it’s world class.
These cows aren’t just drinking fermented grape juice over there. They’re getting the good stuff. What a nice send-off for these animals in the last three months of their lives. My question is this. How do the Sezmu farmers decide which 100 of their 300 cows will be the lucky ones to enter the booze program? Is it the ones who have gained the most? The ones with the best temperament? Or is it the luck of the draw? When we got Betty and Ginger a couple of years ago, I read a study stating that cows are very intelligent animals. Mine have yet to prove that fact, of course, but still I am wondering, if they are so intelligent, don’t you think they know that some of them are getting preferential treatment? Some farmers believe that the

mood of the animal pervades the meat. That is one of the reasons why we try to keep our animals content, particularly during the time leading up to market. If the wine makes the happy beef taste better, wouldn’t the opposite hold true for the cows that are feeling left out? Wouldn’t their meat be bland and tasteless as a result of their depression? I think this is something you have to consider. Our fledgling beef herd is just starting out. We have only four cows and one bull at the moment. Maybe when that winery opens up down the road, we should try the bovine-wine connection ourselves. But if we do, you can be sure that none of our cows will be feeling left out. No one likes to drink alone.

The home was destroyed. This fire was also deemed suspicious and the fire marshal’s office is investigating. The final fire took place on St. Lawrence Street in Winchester at around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, September 4. Winchester Fire Chief Don Kelly said that this particular fire was not believed at this time to be suspicious even though the fire marshal’s office is taking a look at it. The owners of the home were away at the time of the fire and no one was hurt but the building suffered significant damage.

Three house fires in as many days kept the North Dundas Fire Department busy last week. Firefighters were out tending to fires on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning as the long weekend began. While most area residents were getting ready for a final long weekend before a new school year started, firefighters from Chesterville, Mountain, Winchester and Morwood were out on the job. There were no injuries to homeowners but there was significant property damage. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating two of the three fires and considers them suspicious. The third fire has been determined to be accidental. J. Morin Photo/Advance Staff The first blaze was discovered on Thursday, This home on Church Road, just a few kilometers east of Hallville, was destroyed by a fire September 2. Firefighters early on Friday, September 3. The house became vacant recently. were called to a house on County Road 43, between Mountain and Development Road. The time was 12:30 am. “It was a two
story farmhouse,” said Mountain Fire Chief Scott Patterson. The fire chief said that the fire was, at the moment, considered to be suspicious and it was being investigated. On Friday morning the second blaze took place just east of Hallville. A recently unoccupied home was destroyed in a fire that officials think began at around 4 a.m. “No one was living there,” said Patterson. All four area fire departments were on the scene. The Mountain firefighters stayed there until 6 p.m. making sure that the fire was out.

Sports 73’s Open Season On A Winning Note Special to the Advance
The CHL opened its regular season with their annual showcase weekend Sept 10, 11 and 12. All 12 teams played two games each over the three day event. Kemptville took three of four possible points in their two games. Friday night saw the 73’s take on the host Kanata Stallions. After allowing the Stallions to score three straight power play goals, the 73’s roared back with four goals to win the season opening game by a score of 4 – 3. Scoring for Kemptville were Alex

Brenton with two and singles for Daniel Lacroix and Brandon Lesway. Saturday evening had the 73’s taking on the Pembroke Lumber Kings. Special teams were significant in this game as the Lumber Kings scored two power play goals and Kemptville tallied a short handed goal. After playing to a 3 - 3 tie after two periods, the third period was a fast, penalty free, scoreless period. A 4 on 4 sudden death overtime period solved nothing and was followed by a shootout. Pembroke came out on top gaining the extra point. Alex Brenton, Dan-
iel Lacroix and Josh Leblanc scored for the 73’s. Kemptville took three of a possible four points to start the season. Ben Curley stopped 41 of 44 shots and was named the game’s second star. During the pre-game meeting, General Manager Paul Brenton re-enforced how important office preparation would be. He stated that “being prepared for education and career goals will be very important. This proved to be correct as there were many scouts present for the weekend games. The scouts represented NHL, AHL, NCAA, CIS, OHL,

IN MEMORIAM
SCOTT: In loving memory of my very precious grandson and nephew, Jeffrey Wayne Scott, who passed away September 12, 1995. To everything there is a season, And a time to every purpose under Heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die. A time to weep, and a time to laugh. Jeffrey, you were born with a gentle and kindhearted spirit, Which you carried with you all through your life, no matter what life presented you with. Even in death, you always faced them with a smile. I will never forget the one thing was constant in my life. No matter what the circumstances, your love, encouragement and kind spirit helped me through it. For this I thank you. We all have our own cherished memories of the many happy occasions we shared with you. And yes, we had our sad times, but they only made us love you more. Time goes by too quickly and we miss you more each day. But your pictures and our memories keep you close. God gave us one of the most precious gifts of all. And that was you, dear Grandson. Jeffrey, in our appointed time we, too, will reunite with your spirit in God’s Heavenly realm. Too dearly loved to ever be forgotten, Grandma Christie and Uncle Robert
The family of the late Lorne Dillabaugh wish to express their gratitude to the staff of the Kemptville District Hospital Palliative unit for the excellent care during Lorne’s recent stay. Thank you to family and friends for prayers, food donations, flowers and cards of sympathy. Thanks also to the Heckston United church choir, led by Pat Sugarman and to the UCW for the luncheon after the funeral service. A heartfelt thank you to Rev. Blair Paterson for his spiritual guidance and support throughout Lorne’s lengthy illness. It warms our hearts to live in such a caring community, who have been there for us during a difficult time in our lives. We are truly blessed. Grace, Cathy, Wayne and families.

ACADEMY GETS GRANT
Skip breakfast Sunday, September 26th for the First-Ever MarketPlates
The Kemptville Kinsmen Farmers’ Market is hosting the first-ever MarketPlates, bringing together farmers and chefs from the North Grenville area to celebrate the local harvest. The proceeds of this event will be donated to the Kemptville Kinsmen who have provided much for Kemptville’s Farmers’ Market, and without whom the market may not even be possible. MarketPlates, is the focal point for the
end of a fabulous market season. It is a great opportunity to devour the marvelous taste of autumn in North Grenville. Chefs, cooks, and owners of local restaurants and catering businesses are donating their time to participate with Farmers’ Market vendors and farmers to prepare tasty tidbits for everyone to sample. Some chefs will even be doing live demonstrations.
Participating restaurants and caterers include: Boyce’s, the branch, Brewed Awakenings, Brigadoon, Catered Affairs, Charliewood’s, Dial a Chef, The Landing, Red Rooster, and Salamanders. Live entertainment will be provided by Gilles Roger and friends. An RCMP officer and former military official, Gilles’ goal is to raise $1 million for the Military Family Resource Centre. Visit the market on Sunday, September
19th to purchase your advanced tickets, as this is expected to be a popular event. What you need to know: MarketPlates is September 26 at Riverside Park in Old Downtown Kemptville from 12:00pm - 4:00 pm Suggested donation is $10 Advanced tickets are available at the market prior to the event.
