The hard work, struggles and eventual triumphs of Olympic athletes was compared to the long-awaited Kemptville District Hospital’s new wing grand opening. “I wasn’t sure how to relate ski racing to a new hospital wing, but I can relate it to the hard

work it took to get here and that it wasn’t done alone,” said Canadian Paralympics skier Lauren Woolstencroft, who was at the recent grand opening of the Kemptville District Hospital’s new wing on Sept. 29. “Another thing about Paralympics sports is the concept of adversity, and everyone who will walk through this facility will be facing some sort of adversity in

their life.” The Kemptville District Hospital recently celebrated the grand opening of their new wing facility with members of the community – from area leaders, business owners and even patients. North Grenville Mayor Bill Gooch and Merrickville-Wolford Mayor Doug Struthers were on site to give opening speeches of the importance of the after-

noon. “I want to give credit to everyone in the community,” said Gooch. “It’s a fantastic time for our community.” Struthers added that the Kemptville District Hospital has brought residents from both Merrickville-Wolford and North Grenville together. See GRAND page 3

Between Sept. 27 and Oct. 3, the Kemptville Office of North Grenville Ontario Provincial Police investigated 105 general occurrences: 31 in Kemptville, 46 in the Municipality of North Grenville, 20 in the Village of Merrickville– Wolford and eight on Highway 416. On Sept. 20, police were dispatched to a theft from a construction site on Concession Road in Kemptville. Sometime over the weekend, suspects entered the site of the new North Grenville District High School and stole a large quantity of fuel from an excavator and a compactor. The investigation is ongoing. During the early hours of Oct. 2nd, a 20 year-old male was leaning up against the Bank of Nova Scotia on Asa Street in Kemptville, talking on a cellphone. Two males approached the 20 year-old and grabbed his jacket and proceeded to assault and threaten him. The victim was able to break free and ran to a friend’s home. The police were immediately alerted and one of the suspects was located walking on Clothier Street. The second suspect was arrested the following day. A 30 yearold man from Kemptville and a 23 year-old from North Grenville are charged with assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. On Oct. 2, police were dispatched to an apartment complex on Clothier Street in Kemptville. The apartment had recently been condemned and the tenants had left some of their property at the side of the building to be retrieved at a later date. When the tenants returned to pick up their belongings, they discovered the items had been stolen. The items included a Broil King barbecue and a CCM trail bike. Police believe it is possible that the property might have been taken by someone who thought the items had been discarded. Anyone with information on the above occurrences is asked to call Grenville County O.P.P. Communication Centre at 1-888-3101122, the Kemptville Detachment at 613-258-3441 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-(TIPS) 8477 or submit your tip online at: www.tipsubmit.com Crime Stoppers does not want your name, you don’t go to court, and you could earn cash reward. HOSPITAL from front “There’s a great expression that goes – if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” he said. Two Olympic athletes were also guest speakers at the grand opening – women’s hockey champion Jayna Hefford and Woolstencroft. H e f fo r d s p o ke about how hard work and dedication can make great things happen. Referring to a loss to the Americans in the 2009 world championships, she said the Canadian women’s hockey team trained day and night to win the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics. “That’s your challenge now.” said Hefford. “There’s still work to do with the new wing but with the support of the community and people,

it will be a success,” The Kemptville District Hospital’s founders made sure in 1957 that the doors would be open by 1960. The new wing reflects that same community involvement and enthusiasm, said hospital officials. The hospital’s new $23 million, 38,000 square foot wing sits at the rear of the hospital. On the first level of the three-storey wing, there will be a new diagnostic imaging department, ultrasound and mammography area. On the second level, the wing will house three new operating rooms including pre and postop areas. There will be mechanical and electrical systems on the third floor. There was also a ribbon cutting for the Tallman Family Emergency Room. “It was a team effort

What about rural poverty?

Celebrating history

Every election has its themes and currents. At some point everyone agrees with what most of the challenges are even if the solutions to those challenges vary from candidate to candidate. Every now and again those election issues are difficult to put into words and until the all candidate meetings take place most voters are unable to know what to focus on. One way to try and spot what is on the minds of candidates and at the same time what should or should not be on the minds of voters is to listen carefully to the words being used by candidates. Over and over again this fall we have heard the word sustainability used, along with managed growth and infrastructure. The process of branding a community has been brought up as well as the notion of marketing a township or municipality. We have not heard a peep from anyone about what to do about rural poverty. That condition is relentless and in this part of the world is growing. We have more than enough for ourselves maybe we should be voting to share more of it. From North Dundas through to MerrickvilleWolford the issue seems to be that voters like what they have seen from their existing councils as far as the direction taken in the past goes but they want to have more input than before and they want to make sure someone is listening to them. It is as if we have the luxury of worrying about keeping what we have and growing more of the same. It’s a nice place to be in. Environmentalists should be happy that more residents are thinking about the environment. All those years of educating are starting to pay off. There is a direction that area residents want to go. Voters have received the message that environmental concerns and infrastructure have to be a priority in order for residents to feel comfortable. Again, we are rich enough to worry about keeping what we have. That is a major shift from simply wanting lower taxes which often has to mean fewer services and more user fees. Remember that saying - “You get the government you deserve”.

COLUMN

Debates good for municipal politics At a recent Merrickville-Wolford all-candidates meeting, it was amazing to see the great turnout of people interested and passionate about municipal politics. I recently contacted the Municipality of North Grenville to ask about statistics on voter turnouts during municipal elections and wasn’t too surprised to learn that way less than half – roughly 30 per cent – of people actually go out and vote. I’m sure there are reasons (none of them good) that the majority of people don’t vote for their municipal leaders. But going to the MerrickvilleWolford all-candidates meeting gave me hope that maybe this year might be different. Maybe we’ll get closer to that 100 per cent voter turn out target. Maybe there will be changes where they’re needed. It was amazing to see the variety of issues people were worried about in this community. Voters brought up everything from environmental concerns, to economic development, to unity issues within the municipal-

KRISTY WALLACE ity of Merrickville-Wolford. People even asked about climate change and how will the incoming councillors adapt to it on a local level. I was ready to get out the popcorn and put my feet up when a shouting match broke out between a voter and a councillor about website issues and lack of information that’s available to residents on the web. The voter was angry he couldn’t get budget information while an incumbent told the voter he was nowhere to be seen when council held its annual budget meeting. Even the voters started making cracks at one another. One woman wanted to know when the municipality will start adding “Wolford” to the sides of the fire trucks while a man later poked fun at the idea, implying he doesn’t care what’s on the fire truck – as long as it’s at his house Vice-President & Regional Publisher Chris McWebb chris.mcwebb@metroland.com Regional General Manager John Willems john.willems@metroland.com

when it catches on fire. People applauded, cheered and even booed – it was as good as going to a movie or sports event. The all-candidates meeting not only brought the voters’ questions and concerns out – it brought out refreshing ideas that challengers had, to help solve the problems of the municipality. There were young families, senior citizens – even some lively children playing in the corner of the Merrickville Community Centre. But above all, the Merrickville-Wolford all-candidates meeting showed that people really do care about their communities and municipal politics and to me, will help improve those stats of a less than half voter turn out. Municipalities need to see people getting angry. It needs to see people asking questions, applauding and yes, even booing. But most of all these elections need voters to come out who are just as enthusiastic and engaged as the folks out in Merrickville-Wolford.

Karen Conquer spent years waking up at the crack of dawn every Saturday, sleepily walking down her staircase to make sure her boys had a nutritious breakfast in them before the big game. These moments made her realize she was a true hockey mom. “I didn’t go to hockey games and yell and scream, and rant and rave,” said Conquer. “I was there to support them and cheer for them.” That’s why the Kemptville resident was chosen – out of more than 1,000 applicants - to be one of the top 10 hockey moms across the Ottawa area. Hockey legend Don Cherry started the salute to hockey moms and held an event recently in Ottawa to honor them. “His own mother would rub his toes when they got cold so he could go out and play again,” said Conquer, who was at the event and heard Cherry speak. “His mom was the one who got him up in the morning, fed him and sent him off to the arena.” Conquer – whose husband was formerly in the military – got her oldest son Brendan involved in

Karen Conquer of Kemptville was recently recognized by Don Cherry as one of the top 10 hockey moms in the Ottawa area. But one of her scariest moments as a hockey mom happened when her son Brenden was hit twice from behind in a game and had to rush him to the hospital. “My legs had gone to cement,” she said. “He just had a concussion. But it could’ve been worse.” Her proudest moment as a hockey mom came when her youngest son, Cliff, had passed the puck to a teammate who was the only child on the team who hadn’t scored a goal yet. “The kid was so excited,” she said.

Merrickville candidates face off KRISTY WALLACE kristy.wallace@metroland.com

Merrickville-Wolford residents had their chance to question municipal candidates running for councillor spots in this year’s elections. The meeting was held at the MerrickvilleWolford Community Centre on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The hot topics raised included transparency issues of the current council, the environment and the new economic development report. Colin Herman – a resident of the Wolford Township – brought up issues he had with information that has not been included on the municipality’s website. “On the website there are no

fiscal statement, no financial reports and no budget,” he said. “How do we make decisions if we don’t have that information?” Herman’s comment was met with applause as incumbents acknowledged that there should indeed be that information on the website. Incumbents also said that maintaining the website and getting important information up is “high priority.” While Lorne Caldwell – who’s the incumbent for councillor at large for Merrickville Wolford – was in agreement that the website should be maintained, he said that it’s also up to the citizens to keep themselves informed. hockey at a Germany base when he was four years-old. When the family moved to Kemptville she got her five-year old son involved in 1995. As a little girl her family loved the sport, but when she grew up girls didn’t play hockey. Now over the years, Conquer has supported her sons and cheered in the stands. Even her son Cliff ’s young team members would notice Conquer’s dedication to the teams he played on in the area. “One boy said to my son how lucky he was because his mom goes to all the games and practices,” she said. “His mom didn’t like hockey and so she didn’t go.” While Conquer gave rides to teammates and was always there for her sons, she went one step further and was on the executive of many hockey associations in the area. These included the South Grenville Junior B’s, associations in Kemptville and sat on the executive board for the Kings. Through all of this, she also faced challenges when her husband was in Kosovo in 2000. “I was a single parent and they were both in competitive hockey,” she said. Luckily she said neither son had tournaments on the same weekend.

year at the branch restaurant’s annual Thanksgiving dinner for the community. “I basically got to know a lot of people at the branch,” Blaney said. “So when the opportunity came up to volunteer for their Thanksgiving dinner, I jumped in there and loved every minute of it.” Blaney, who also volunteers at the annual Mother’s Day Brunch, spends most of her Thanksgivings serving tables to those in the community who might not have a family in the

neighbourhood. As a single woman who lives in North Grenville with daughters living in Ottawa, she enjoys the welcoming atmosphere the annual dinner provides at Thanksgiving. “Thanksgiving is when everyone comes together and enjoys what they have,” said Blaney. “It’s not just about food but about friendship, sharing, sitting back and enjoying each others company - and, just enjoying life.” Her volunteer experience at the branch’s annual Thanksgiving dinner

has brought rewarding moments for her – including one time when her daughters Shannon and Carolyn came to visit and shared time volunteering in the kitchen. Blaney was asked to run the kitchen for about half an hour and so she and her daughters – one being a pastry chef – spent family time volunteering. “They didn’t know they’d be volunteering,” she laughed. “I’ll always remember that as a wonderful experience. They were so happy doing that, and it was one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve ever had with them.” While serving on Thanksgiving, Blaney often notices the sense of family among those in the area – even among strangers who happen to sit next to each other with their turkey dinners. The feeling of acceptance is also present when people come in to enjoy their meals, she said. See GIVING page 10

Fall clothing exchange at Trinity Bible Church

From VOLUNTEER page 6 “What I think about most when I think about Thanksgiving is the idea of inclusion and friendship,” Blaney said. “We’re all so busy these days, and it’s a time

Giving back to the community to just slow down and be with the people we know and celebrate the fact we have these people in our lives.” That same friendship that people extended to Blaney when she

first came to North Grenville is what she hopes to give back when serving people who come into the branch on Thanksgiving Day. The majority of people who

come in for their turkey dinner are people who want to be among friends who might not have family in the area, she explained. “It just makes you feel so good to be among friends. That’s what

it’s all about.” Blaney adds that anyone can volunteer at the restaurant for the day and can volunteer for as long as they like on Thanksgiving.

Gooch added that the report on traffic will be made available to the public once it is finished. Another resident was also at the meeting and voiced his concerns over the water supply since the new subdivision would use private services - and therefore, wells. “Can we be assured that the drilling of 24 wells won’t affect the well water supply? he said. Senior Planner Phil Gerrard said that it would not affect the quality of water and that there is a public report available for anyone interested in looking at it. The resident also asked if council will ever extend municipal water supply out to the area. Gooch said it’s unlikely that municipal water will service the new subdivision. “I don’t think given the cost we’ll see municipal services extended out to Victoria Park village for the time you and I have left, he said. He added that it would be so expensive that the only way the subdivision could run on municipal water was if there was a contamination and the municipality had to secure safe drinking water. Novatech Engineering was also at the meeting to hear concerns, and the conditions for draft approval will be brought back to council at a later date. kristy.wallace@metroland.com

elcome to this 2010 edition of the Advance’s Fall Home Improvement. There is still plenty of time to finish any project you can imagine and the advertisers in our pages this year hope that you will consider the professionals close to home first for all your home requirements.

Family business noticing increase in geothermal

So take a few minutes and I am sure you will find exactly what you are looking for among the many local businesses in your own back yard. Many have been in our area for a long time, and others have taken the challenge and opened recently. All are accommodatseem particularly volatile, free fuel is True, ‘green technology’ has become ing, experienced, and appreciate your business. And thanks again for read- a catchphrase that can be both confusing attractive and more homeowner and and frustrating when it comes to building builders are searching for understanding The Advance. a home, but one business in Kemptville works hard to alleviate some of the mystery while providing service that sets a new benchmark. A homegrown, family owned business, RB Heating installs all kinds of heating and cooling systems, but they admit that geo-thermal installations have been doubling and tripling over the past three or four years. “People choose geo-thermal for a lot of different reasons,” says Rick Buffham, the owner. The initial cost of the systems is high but it’s recoverable in five years and efficiency can reach 500 percent according to Buffham. In an age where fuel prices

able ‘green’ solutions . “You have a nominal cost in hydro to operate some of the components, but the fuel is free,” says Donna Buffham, RB Heating’s business manager and Rick’s mother. A geo-thermal water furnace uses the free, renewable energy found in any back yard saving up to 70 percent on heating, cooling and hot water costs. At the same time the Ontario Government offers several Eco-Energy grants designed to encourage homeowners to reduce their energy consumption. Those government grants can run as high as $7,000 on a single installation.

Interest in geothermal energy on the increase Continued from previous page More importantly the results are very tangible according to those who’ve tried it. “It’s awesome heat and air,” says Donna Lee O’Farrell, a longtime customer of RB Heating “It’s so accurate and quick to change temperature and its nice moist air quality – no dry heat.” There is even more to this particular business than their expertise in green technologies. This is one business that has cracked the secret to growing the sweet memories that bring customers back time and again. It’s a simple enough secret that combines excellence with genuine care as O’Farrell recalls. “I think we had gone away for the weekend while RB Heating were installing a new gas furnace in our old house – well it seems our sump pump failed,” she reminisced. The failure of the pump meant the couple’s basement flooded overnight while they were away – a potential nightmare for any homeowner. The O’Farrells were surprised and impressed when they received a call from one of

the RB Heating technicians doing the installation work at their home. “Your basement flooded, but don’t worry we’ve cleaned it up,” he told them. Unusual though that was, it’s part of the culture of this particular team of 19 employees. “Rick treats his staff well and he treats his clients just as well – he really genuinely cares about his clients,” said David Reaney a technician at RB Heating. So when the O’Farrells decided to build both a new home and office some years later, they didn’t hesitate to call RB Heating. Again they were treated to the best service they could imagine. “I’m a solutions guy,” says Buffham, “I just try to look at the best options for the customer.” The best solution as far as Buffham is concerned is what the customer wants in terms of heat or cooling quality, space, noise and cost. The Dorions had heard of RB Heating and called them up to install a geo-thermal system, but it had to fit into their home without shrinking their base-

ment space. “They laid out the ductwork in the basement very nicely, maximizing our space – they were very easy to work with and did

a really nice job,” said Richard Dorion who had Buffham design and install both a ground-source system, and propane fireplaces at his new home just west of

Kemptville. “I just hold myself accountable to being the best at what we do,” says Buffham without any pretentions.

David Reaney, a licenced technician with RB Heating sets out on a service call. Regular maintenance by well trained and informative technicians is a big part of this family owned business. 418326

Kemptville Advance - OCTOBER 07, 2010

The Accidental Farmwife: Looking forward to the library Books entrusted to my safekeeping were always in some sort of danger, unfortunately. I read while walking home after school. My favourite place to read was up a tree. Many times a book fell out of my shoulder bag during the climb, landing in a pile of damp leaves – or worse. I used to read during my bath too, until that fateful evening when a very large hardcover copy of The Story Girl slipped through the bubbles into the water. When I checked to see if it had dried out the next morning, I was shocked to see its pages had swollen so that the book was forced permanently open. I have a confession: I squeezed that book shut and returned it to the library shelf without telling Mrs. Folkard, the Kemptville Public School librarian at the time. She scared me just a little. Hangin’ out in the public library was one of my favourite pastimes when I was young. A few decades later, the library was a weekly destination when I was raising young children of my own. It provided much more than books to a young mother desperate to get out of the house.

When I lived in Asia, I scooped up the new English bestsellers as soon as they arrived on the display table before they could disappear. I’m looking forward to checking out (get it? I punned ;) our new library and dusting off my old borrower’s card. I hope we find an appropriate use for the old library building, because it holds a special place in the hearts of many local book lovers. Last month we lost Mrs. Groskopf, the librarian who held court in the old stone building on Prescott Street when I was a skinny little four-eyed bookworm. She had a smile that crinkled up her eyes, and I know she loved her library because she knew exactly where every book could be found. I once thought I would be a librarian some day. It says so in my kindergarten yearbook (circa 1973, if you must know...). Many things have changed but my love of books remains. Thank you to everyone who donated their money, time and efforts to the Room to Read campaign. I know I’m going to be one of our new library’s first customers.

Merrickville and District Historical Society brings past to life ZACK FORTIN Special to the Advance

The oldest settlements on the Lower Rideau are Merrickville, Burritts Rapids, and Andrewsville. Before the Rideau Canal was even constructed, William Merrick, Stephen Burritt, and brothers

Rufus and Silas Andrews founded new settlements for their families and future townspeople. Merrick established his village in 1794, Burritt’s in 1793, and Andrews’ in 1843. For 40 years, the Merrickville and District Historical Society has been collecting many important documents about

the history of the local area. Documents range in forms of newspapers, photographs, family bibles and albums and much more. All of these have created an extensive - and irreplaceable - collection of local history. Thanks to efforts of the historical society volunteers, and funding from numerous sources, more than 3,000

local historical records can be viewed in the public library. They can be located via the new “heritage room” where all the historical society records are kept. Nina Donald, president of the historical society, feels that volunteers and sponsors deserve much gratitude for making the dream a reality.

You were gone before I knew it and only god knows why. My heart still aches in sadness, and secret tears will flow. What it meant to lose you no one will ever know. We still have all your pictures, and we remember all the good times we shared. Since you’ll never be forgotten, I pledge to you today. The hallowed place within my heart is where you’ll always stay. Kemptville 73’s split weekend games

Special to the Advance

Bringing in the new month, the 73’s were looking to keep their recent momentum going. And keep it going is what they did. The Ottawa Junior Senators were the visitors at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Friday night. Just two and half minutes into the game Ethan Allard scored his second of the year to put Kemptville out in front. But Ottawa evened it up 10 minutes later. Before the end of the first, Brandon Lesway, on a beautiful shorthanded effort, put Kemptville ahead to stay. In the second period, goals by Keegan Rowe and Daniel Lacroix had the 73’s up by a score of 4-1 by the second intermission. However, the Junior Sens were not finished. Kemptville was out shot 175 in the third and Ottawa managed to score twice. The

73’s hung on to win 4-3. Head Coach Pat Malloy said “With any young team playing a new system, they have to learn how to play the full 60 minutes.” The last two games have seen the opposition come back in the third after Kemptville had taken a commanding lead after two periods. In order to maintain their winning streak, the team had their work cut out for them as they had to travel to Pembroke on Sunday night to tangle with the Lumber Kings. With almost 1,200 fans on hand to watch the game, the Lumber Kings took a 3-0 lead to the dressing room after one. A rough fight filled the second period saw Pembroke add one more goal. Kemptville was out - shot 288 in the first two periods. In the third, the 73’s scored two power play goals to make a game of it but they came out on the wrong end of a

This week, Kemptville visits Smiths Falls to take on the Bears on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Then the team is back home for a rematch with the Pembroke Lumber Kings on

Friday, Oct 8. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Municipal Centre. On Sunday, Oct. 10, the Hawkesbury Hawks will be visiting North Grenville for the first time this year. Game time is 2 p.m. Come out and see some great hockey and possibly some future stars. Catch the excitement.

From MERRICKVILLE page 5 “I would like to point out that we hold a meeting for all residents before the budget is passed,” said Caldwell. “One person showed up.” Another resident said they have attended several council meetings and said she has noticed that the meeting minutes include issues that will be put into action, and there’s no discussion which leads to decisionmaking. She asked how the elected council will open the lines of communication. Incumbent for Merrickville ward Tim Malloy suggested the meetings be tele-

All-candidates meeting held in Merrickville vised like North Grenville. David Snowdon, who’s running for a Wolford ward council seat, suggested that meetings be televised through live stream on the Merrickville-Wolford website. Resident Andrea Howard asked each candidate what their main personal goals were. Cesar Farhat – who’s running for councillor-at-large for Merrickville-Wolford – mentioned cleaning up excessive pollution and recycling. Councillor incumbent Jane Graham said the environment is also on her shortlist including improving the landfill site and

educating the public. Wolford ward resident Heather Wilson asked the non-incumbents how they would tackle global warming at a local level. Almost all the candidates said they didn’t know the issue well enough – except for Tom Beach, who’s running in the Wolford Ward. “Mitigation would require longer land-use planning,” he said. However he added that the municipality would have to adapt to excessive rainfall, for example, prepare for the impact it would have on drainage and sewers. Merrickville-Wolford’s new economic development re-

port was also a hot button issue where candidates addressed it throughout the evening. “I would like to transition the report into action,” said candidate Robert Gray for the Merrickville ward. “I want to diversify the economic base with an emphasis on tourism, but reflect the residents too.” Candidates also expressed their views on the importance of trails to the local economy. “Trails are very important and would change this area into a four-season destination,” said Merrickville ward incumbent Joan Spencer. “We should partner with the chamber – we

would make money and keep local businesses going.” Merrickville ward incumbent Tim Malloy added that the idea of eco-tourism that more trails would bring would help diversify the economy. The meeting ended with a woman who has been a resident there since 1950. “I’ve never been treated discourteously. I’ve never been refused any information I’ve ever asked for. And I’d like to thank the current members of council for the cooperation I’ve received,” she said. “I keep it my business to stay informed.”
