System glitch caused voting headaches ANDREW SZTEIN andrew.sztein@metroland.com
GOOD SPORTS Dr. Bernie Brennan among sporting successes celebrated by North Grenville Sports Hall of Fame 6
A server issue with the Intelivote online voting system caused headaches and delays on election night, forcing many polls to stay open longer than scheduled. “It was all municipalities in Ontario that used Intelivote that were affected,” said Cahl Pominville, director of corporate services in North Grenville. The city of Arnprior got hit hardest, forcing polls to stay open until the next day. “There was nothing as far as numbers that was an issue,” said Pominville, confirming that the votes processed through the system were accurate. “It was a problem with having access to cast the ballot. That’s why we extended the polls until 9 p.m. in most municipalities.” VOTE COUNT UP
BRAVERY
In North Grenville, another problem may have been that there were a higher percentage of voters than in previous years causing strain on the system. Out of 11,366 eligible voters, 5,344 voted, and 4097 of those votes were cast electronically by phone. The 46.1 per cent participation rate is a marked increase over the 39.3 per cent that voted in 2006. According to Dean Smith, president and founder of Intelivote, it was “a perfect storm of circumstances” that caused a “black eye for the company”.

ANDREW SZTEIN A 51 year old North Dundas man was killed after being trapped in a corn silo on a farm in Chesterville. The man was identified as Ralph O’Neil, a North Dundas native who had been working as a farmhand for the past 30 years. “On Oct. 25 at approximately 3:30 p.m. O.P.P. officers responded to a report of a farming mishap on Nation Valley Rd. in North Dundas township,” said O.P.P. Constable Pete Robertson. The investigation revealed that O’Neil “who was working in the silo was found unconscious and later pronounced deceased.”

The official cause of death has not yet been determined. The death is not being treated as suspicious and has been passed along to the Ministry of Labour for further investigation. The ministry has ordered the owner of the property to establish safety measures and caution signs for entering silos before the farm is allowed to continue operations. O’Neil was a worker on the farm, but did not live on the property, according to Robertson. He had been working at the farm for two months milking cows after leaving another Chesterville farm due to back and shoulder problems. He is survived by his wife, Heather.

The advantages of computer-based voting include the ability to allow registered voters a chance to cast ballots from as far away as Afghanistan. The downside was evident on Oct. 25 when server speeds dropped under increasing demand, causing polls to stay open late so all votes could be counted.

New guard on council
Election coverage was well done
The fallout from the 2010 election is another turn of the wheel. We have all been there. Voted for the up and comers, watched them become distracted by the reality of actually being on council and then enjoyed the slow climb to competence that all councillors and mayors go through. Not only did we reinvent the wheel we are the wheel in more ways than one. The changing of the guard in North Grenville is a significant moment. It comes at a time when the community has just realized how all that change has crept up and now it seems as if the kind of community residents are used to is about to be changed forever. Of course, older and more complicated communities than Kemptville and North Grenville have survived this kind of change before. The world is dotted with the remains of recent and not so recent upheavals, disasters, and man made dilemmas. North Grenville is growing and more people want to come to live here to have a piece of the pie that was baked by the ones who came before us. It is not just about affordable housing within driving distance of the big city. It is about joining a way of life that promises to be fun, safe and at the very least, more peaceful. The new council has a raft of projects on the go that began long before this latest election. They will see them through and at the same time probably come up with a few more to add to the pile. All of the politicking has given councillors and the new mayor a great deal to think about and look forward to. The wheel is still round but this council can try to decorate it in a way that pleases newcomers to North Grenville and those already enjoying life here. It will be an interesting challenge, taking advantage of the momentum that has built up over the past few years as the new council begins that climb.

To the editor, Thank you for the excellent and truly democratic coverage given to all the Ottawa mayoral candidates in the Oct. 21, 2010 issue of The Advance. The larger Ottawa newspapers would do well to follow your example, after having fallen into the trenches of schlocky partisan campaigning for a selected few. You do newspaper reporting proud. Keep up that great work! P.S. Please pass along my praises to Diana Fisher, “The Accidental Farmwife,” whose column just keeps getting better and better! Ann Brady Winchester

THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF FIRE CHIEFS More than 50 years ago, the phrase spring forward and fall back was first coined as an easy reminder for people who had trouble remembering whether to move clocks ahead or back in the correct season. Just over 20 years ago, the time change was associated with changing the batteries in your smoke alarm. The fire service looks for every available opportunity to instill the basics of fire safety. Year in and year out, they bundle the smoke alarm battery replacement message with the time change. As we approach the switch back from Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, Nov. 7, how many Canadians remain vulnerable? Replacing smoke alarm batteries once per year is a simple but tried-and-true practice that doubles your chances of escaping and surviving a fire. With the home heating season upon us and the heightened attention on the dangers of carbon monoxide, fall is also a great time to install new batteries in CO alarms. For more information on home fire safety and carbon monoxide safety visit www.SafeAtHome. ca DEADLINE FOR ARTICLES - DISPLAY ADVERTISING AND CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING is Monday 9 a.m. Call 613-258-3451 (local) or 1-877-298-8288.

Beth Donovan Hospice raises awareness and funds on Halloween andrew.sztein@metroland.com
Funds and awareness for the Beth Donovan Hospice were both raised at a gala event at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Oct. 30. 163 tickets were sold for the event, which included a fully catered meal from the Knights of Columbus, silent and live auctions, a cake auction, and live music. “This fundraising event is to support our home visiting program,” said Dawn Rodger, executive director of the hospice. “This allows us to support individuals in the home with a terminal illness to be supported, to provide respite, some emotional and spiritual support. To give a break to families that need it.” The hospice serves a 423365-43-10
large area to the south and west of Ottawa, including as far north as Manotick, in addition to communities such as Kemptville, Spencerville and Merrickville, On average, the hospice serves 15 clients a month. Currently, the hospice only does work within the home with the terminally ill, but Rodger hopes that they’ll soon have permanent digs to serve patients at the Kemptville District Hospital Campus. “That’s in the works,” said Rodger. “We’re looking at the latter end of 2012, but we’re looking to build a strong foundation and get planning in place before we launch an intensive capital campaign.” The work the hospice does is only possible through the hard work of the staff and volunteers. “We’re very team ori-
ented,” said Rodger. “We have a very small staff and very good synergy with our board and with our staff. All together we’ve pulled this off together with our community partners in the Knights of Columbus.” Rodger also had a message to pass along to the community for their support. “We’re here to help in any capacity we can within our mission and vision. When people have had a terminal diagnosis within their family, it’s like hitting a brick wall. We’re to help with that.”

North Grenville sports icons honored in inaugural Hall of Fame class ANDREW SZTEIN andrew.sztein@metroland.com
It was an evening to honour sporting icons and heroes at the inaugural North Grenville Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The ceremony took place in a packed North Grenville Municipal Centre as 18 inductees were recognized for their life achievements in sport. One inductee in particular, Dr. Bernie Brennan, was congratu-
lated for a career that spawned nothing but success in a variety of fields. Brennan was raised in Kemptville, and had successful careers on the ice hockey rink, on the football gridiron, in stables as a veterinarian, rider, breeder, and trainer, and even as a Mountie. GRIDIRON SUCCESS Out of all his accomplishments, Brennan is most proud of his success on the gridiron, saying that football was his
“main sport.” “I was fortunate to have Father Tom Murphy, an All-American at Boston University, that really taught me how to play football,” he said. “He was the greatest coach and motivator I ever played for. We won the junior and senior football championships in Ottawa and never lost a game in ’45 and ‘46.” His success in football continued with the University of Guelph, where he was given an athletic scholarship to the veterinary college. He played with

the University of Guelph from 1947-51, and won the inter-collegiate championship three years in a row. Upon his return to Ottawa, he played for the Rough Riders, helping them to a Grey Cup championship in 1951. “My fondest memory is from the University of Guelph when we won three championships in a row,” said Brennan. “Football was the big sport at the University.” GOING EQUESTRIAN His football days behind him, Brennan turned his attention to veterinary and equestrian work. “I started the Alta Vista animal hospital in Ottawa,” said Brennan. “It now has 30 veterinarians and 120 on the payroll. It’s the largest animal hospital in Canada.” Brennan always “enjoyed
working with horses,” and like everything else he touched in his career, this hobby turned to gold. Brennan became the director of Rideau Carleton Raceway, where he was appointed track veterinarian. He was also part owner of Cam Fella, a racehorse with an astonishing record of success. “That horse went on to make $6 million and won 27 straight races all over North America,” said Brennan. “He was the top standard bred horse in North America for two years.” Accolades for Brennan came from all directions, but perhaps Richard Gardiner, secretary treasurer of the Rideau Carleton Raceway said it best. “We wish to congratulate Dr. Brennan on his induction into the hall of fame. Patti Goodman, Program Manager, of the Food, Nutrition and Risk Management Program (Left) and Claude Smith, Head Lecturer of the Horticulture Program (R) present to Members and Guests at the Chamber’s Business After Hours on Wed. Oct. 20, 2010.
Over 40 Members and Guests were treated to a Special October's BAH Event, Sponsored by the “Horticulture & Food, Nutrition and Risk Management Programs" in the Greenhouse (The A. J. Logsdail Centre) at U. of G. Kemptville Campus, Wednesday, October 20, 2010. This was an opportunity to learn more about the unique programs offered at our very own University Campus, in North Grenville. The Students of the Food Program prepared and served the delicious finger-food and beverages; adding that special touch to an already unique setting. The University of Guelph, Kemptville Campus offers a Horticulture Coop Apprenticeship Diploma Program starting in January 2011. This program combines hands-on experience with classroom learning. With smaller class sizes and a great campus; this program has more flexibility than most colleges can offer. The Students grow all the annuals for the campus and have started on a New Project to provide the Food Service program with fresh herbs and vegetables. The program also includes classes in hard landscaping, business accounting, and plant production, just to name a few. The Horticulture Program is holding an Open House on November 5th between 12:00 and 6:00 p.m. Visit the website at www.kemptvillec.uoguelph.ca for more detailed information or Contact Claude Smith, Head Lecturer, directly at 613-258-8336 ext. 61358. The Food, Nutrition and Risk Management diploma is a two year program designed to prepare graduates for careers in the food industry. Food service management, food inspection, quality control, nutrition education and food technician are some of the fields and positions in which FNRM graduates can be found. The program runs September to April and culminates with a five (5) week filled placement at the end of the second year. In exceptional Cases some Students may start in January. Registration is in Early Spring but anyone is welcome to come by the Campus anytime for a tour, to get more information and meet other students. To Contact Patti Goodman, Program Manager, directly for more information call 613-258-8336 ext. 61370

The community support that Bles received while still living in Merrickville was “amazing” from a community that Bles and her husband had resided in for 29 years. Bles’ husband still commutes into Merrickville for work every day. “People kept bringing over food, flowers, one lady vacuumed my house, it was just amazing,” she said. “People here are just great.”

Riemke Bles stands side by side with Gov. Gen. David Johnston after receiving a medal of bravery in honour of her daughter Roxanne Lalonde. Lalonde passed away in 2007 after jumping into the Rideau River to try and save a drowning boy.
Lalonde was 31 at the time of her death, a seaman in the Naval Reserve training constantly for aquatic rescues. “She was in the navy and training to rescue people,” said Bles. “She’d always tell us stories about Oscar, the dummy that they’d throw off the ship and they had to
rescue. That’s what she was trained to do, so she thought she could save that boy, but the rapids were too strong for her.” Bles described her daughter as “very energetic” and especially enjoyed baseball. Lalonde was on the Navy baseball team, travelling from base to base in

73’s on losing end of games On Friday, Oct. 29, the 73’s welcomed the Nepean Raiders to North Grenville for the only home game this week. After struggling through two games last week, Kemptville took to the ice hoping to break out of their recent slump. It started out very promisingly. Pat Cameron scored for the home team just three and a half minutes into the game. The goal was Cameron’s second of the season. After a fast paced period, Kemptville went to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead. The Raiders notched a power play goal in
the second as well as one at even strength. The third period was scoreless. Nepean ended up with a 2-1 victory. On a cold Halloween afternoon, Kemptville traveled to the Navan Memorial Centre to take on the Cumberland Grads. Both teams exchanged several power play opportunities in the first period but it remained scoreless. The wheels fell off for Kemptville in the second period. Cumberland’s Michael Borkowski scored the natural hat trick in the period. The Grads took a 3-0
nothing lead into the second intermission. It was more of the same in the third with Cumberland adding three more goals to go up by a score of 6-0. With a little more than three and a half minutes left in the game, Brandon Lesway broke the Grads shut out bid. The 73’s do not play at home again until Tuesday, Nov. 9, versus the Smiths Falls Bears will be the opponents. At right, the Kemptville 73’s take on the Nepean Raiders on Oct. 29. The visiting Raiders won 2-1. 423999
