The Kemptville Youth Centre held their first annual general meeting in their new home on Oxford Street on Saturday, Dec. 11. A new logo was selected for the centre. The logo contest winner was Carolyn Lundy. In this photo, Carolyn is flanked by The Kemptville Youth Centre Executive Director Stacey Tenbult on the left and the president of their board of directors Lisa Davis. right now.” Tenbult added, “We are very thankful to be where we are.” The new logo for the youth centre was unveiled. There were six final designs the youth centre had to choose from. The winning one was created by graphic artist Carolyn Lundy from Kemptville. She said she tried different ideas. “I wanted something simple and uncluttered,” she said. After trying several concepts out, she finally settled on the winning design. The new logo is a stylized human form with its arms raised in a Y formation. Under each raised arm is a letter. K on one side and Y on the other. Beneath the figure is written: Kemptville Youth Centre. Gordon Brown, M.P. for Leeds Grenville was at the open house. “I want to congratulate everyone

here. You have certainly come a long way,” he said. He added, the centre’s accomplishment was an inspiration to the community. North Grenville Mayor David Gordon was also at the youth centre. He said, “This, today is very impressive.” He explained how in the early 1990’s himself and people like the late Peter Nicol, the former editor of the Advance, lifted the idea of the youth centre off the ground. “I am very proud of this,” he said. He commented that the original youth centre vision was not what he was looking at today. “The new people who came along had the vision to make this,” he said. The Kemptville Youth Centre has a new home, an exciting new logo and an entire community behind it. The youth centre moved into its new home on Oxford Street a few weeks ago. On Saturday, Dec. 11, the centre opened its doors to the public and at the same time held their annual general meeting. They also took a few moments to unveil their new logo and to give tours of the centre. Most of work to date has centered around the main floor. The lower floor of building is still under construction. New bathrooms have been completed and their kitchen is on its way to completion. A second large room has been framed and will be another project the centre works on. The president of the Kemptville Youth Centre board of directors Lisa Davis gave a brief year end review report that highlighted how much the youth centre had moved forward since its beginnings in 1994. The centre’s executive director Stacey Tenbult said, “We have come a long way this year.” The progress the youth centre has enjoyed this year came from great leadership from their board and from the centre itself. Davis pointed out that the community had been a crucial factor in getting the centre to where it is today. “We want to thank the community for keeping the centre in their hearts and minds,” she said. She added, “The youth here are not just our future, they are right here,

Girls in Action workshop

Caught in the Act North Grenville is fortunate. It is not luck or chance which has created an environment of giving in North Grenville, it is the people who live here. On Friday afternoon M.P.P. Steve Clark dropped by the courthouse to stand in for the Ontario Trillium Foundation and make a special announcement. The Foundation was giving the North Grenville Public Library $73,000 towards paying for many of the items they will need in their new library. The Trillium Foundation likes to give communities money but before they do they have to make sure that the particular group receiving the money has the community’s support. When they look at all of the people volunteering for the library and the commitment of those who have been supporting the new library building with money, they have no problem joining in. On Saturday morning the Kemptville Youth Centre held their very first Annual General Meeting in their new home on Oxford Street. The youth centre had its beginnings back in the early 1990’s when now North Grenville Mayor David Gordon and Advance Editor Peter Nicol got the ball rolling for some kind of safe place for youth to gather and grow. The youth centre has traveled light years in terms of vision and development. Along the way, community leaders have joined in to raise money, give direction and even wield a paintbrush. The act of giving has been constant and seemingly never ending. The people at the youth centre’s annual general meeting were the same people who you can see helping out all around the North Grenville community. Its board of directors has some of the same people who also have pitched in for the North Grenville Public Library building campaign, as well as the municipality’s expansion project. The list of individuals, groups and community organizations not to mention the business community that have supported the youth centre all of the way is long and impressive.

Running out of air and surviving Every man prides himself on his ability to perform some measure of mechanical activity. For most young men growing up, having some meager expertise looking after your car is mandatory. I have always been proud of the fact that I could at the very least put air in my tires. These days, putting air in the tires is not as simple as it used to be. My secret weapon used to be the manual tire pump. That wonder of physics was replaced some years ago by a small air compressor that plugs into your car lighter. When car makers realized they would have to come up with cars that managed better mileage they turned to slight of hand to achieve their goal. The aluminum tire rim was one such solution. They were lighter. The rims were softer than steel so from time to time the air would leak out of them. I was used to having to fill my tires up especially in the winter when the air inside the tires was colder. I would use my small handy

JOSEPH MORIN electric air pump. This winter I was at it again. The good news was that the tire in question was not completely flat yet and the bad news was that the pump had finally died. The concept of free air available at gas stations has gone the way of common sense. These days you need at least a toonie and a commercial air pump. Guess who was sadly lacking a toonie and decided to go to the bank to get some real cash. Of course you cannot get just a toonie from the bank machine, you have to be ready to get a $20 dollar bill whether you want one or need one. I could buy a new air pump or actually go into the bank, join the lineup and humbly ask for a toonie from the teller. I may not have been mechanically inclined enough to take apart and fix the air pump but Vice-President & Regional Publisher Chris McWebb chris.mcwebb@metroland.com Regional General Manager John Willems john.willems@metroland.com

I was pretty good at getting in a lineup and talking to tellers. I arrived at a local gas bar where there was an air pump. Of course as I drove up a car dashed in front of me to park in the spot you had to be in to get air. That car and all six people who were in it did not need air. They needed to do their grocery and Christmas shopping at the gas bar. I waited for 15 minutes as my gas tank became lighter and the air in my tire continued to escape into the world. All the while, I was holding on to my toonie with the fuzzy fingertips of my winter gloves. You can imagine what happened next. The occupants of the car in the coveted parking spot returned and after comparing bargains for several moments backed out of the spot, just missing my car. I pulled into the spot, got out and dropped the toonie. It rolled under the car. I had to move the car. The story has a happy ending. The toonie bought me just enough time to fill all four tires.

Santa’s substitute BY RYAN DE VILLE SOUTH BRANCH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

“A-CHOO A-CHOO A-A-A-CHOO!!!” Santa sneezed. “Oh! Santa the big day is tomorrow and you’re still sick! All the children are waiting for you to come!” cried Mrs. Claus. “A-CHOO we’re going to have to find someone else to do Christmas this year A-CHOO” Santa cried. Santa should be careful because he could be in danger by the deep dangerous snow flake. “Do not be ashamed. Zot the jolly leprechaun is here! Oh and I forgot my three Elf Leprechauns Vot, Sot, Cot are here too. I can do Christmas this year for you” said Zot. “WAIT!!! You still have to pass training. Ho Ho A-choo, never mind, I can’t train you. You’ll do just fine. I will send my best Elf Qurinci with you” Santa said. The special Elf that Santa sent with Zot, Cot, Sot and Vot is a very special Elf. He will protect and show where to go to get to all of the little kids houses on time. Zot the Leprechaun is a good little leprechaun and so is his fellow leprechaun, Vot, Cot and Sot. The deep, deep dangerous snow flake is upon them. In a cloud the deep, deep dangerous snow flake hides during the day and sometimes at night. This year only two of the reindeers are there because of course they are on vacation or sick. Those two reindeer are Donner and Rudolph. Santa told Qurinci, Zot, Vot, Sot and Cot to get some rest because tomorrow night was Christmas Eve. They were going to have to get some sleep as they had to eat a lot of cookies and drink a lot of milk. “Good night now,” said Santa. “Wake up, wake up, A-choo, you guys slept in all day. It’s Christmas Eve already. Go to the sleigh and give the kids their wishes!!!” Santa screamed. “Ok, Ok, Ok Santa!!! I will get up and we will give the kids their wishes, we promise” yelled Qurinci. As Qurinci was talking to Santa, Zot, Vot, Sot and Cot got the sleigh ready. When Qurinci got outside he hooked up Donner and Rudolph to the sleigh, then he jumped on too. They took off very fast. Sparkles, magic and happiness filled the air. That night the deep, deep dangerous snow flake was speeding in the night wind. As he ran into the magic and happiness, the deep, deep dangerous snow flake became very jolly. Santa looked outside and saw the deep, deep dangerous snow flake dancing. SUBSTITUTE see page 11

Campbell elected as 2011-2012 warden Mel Campbell, the reeve of Augusta Township, has been elected by the Leeds and Grenville counties councillors as warden for 2011-2012. This is the second term Campbell has been elected warden of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. Campbell pledged he and the council will work towards the development of the Integrated Sustainability Plan, which will be the largest in Canada. He also wants to promote the counties’

economic development program and find ways to support local municipal efforts to attract and retain business in the region. Other projects coming up this term are a county-wide official plan and the development of a comprehensive long-term waste management program. In a press release Campbell stated, “2011 is expected to be another year of challenges for us here in Leeds and Grenville. With inspiration and open dia-

Local groups receive grants JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com

North Grenville has approved five community grant applications bringing their total grant money for 2010 to $7,100. The original budget for community grants was $8,000. The municipality received seven applications in 2010 of which they approved five. The Salvation Army received $300 for their Christmas mailing campaign. They requested $500. The Kemptville Community Concert Band asked for $500 to help them create a web site. They

were approved for $200 which will help them cover the cost of the domain name and web hosting. St. Michael’s Wrestling Club had asked for $1,500 for the purchase of wrestling throwing dummies. They were approved for $600. The Beth Donovan Hospice had asked for $1,500 to help them purchase various resource materials on grief and bereavement. They were given $1,000. The final group to receive a grant was the Kemptville Youth Centre. They had asked for $1,000 to set up a music room with a projector and screen. They received $1,000.

logue, I am prepared to exhaust all talents in pursuit of joint success in the counties business.” Campbell is replacing former warden, Bill Thake, who said it was an honour to represent the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, and thanked council and staff for their assistance during his term of office. The 2010 revised council procedural by-law allows for a two year term of office beginning 2011. The new warden was born and raised in Manitoba. He worked at the Manitoba Telephone System after graduating from high school. He then joined the RCMP. He ended his eight-year career with the RCMP as an intelligence investigator. Campbell joined his father-inlaw in the family-owned dairy operation in Augusta Township. In 1998, the farm was switched to an egg and poultry business, which is now managed by his son Brad. Campbell served two terms as a councillor for Augusta Township in the 1970s. He was elected reeve of the township in 2006 and acclaimed as reeve in 2010. This is Campbell’s second term as warden as he held the position in 2009.

Viruses: a new cancer-fighting machine? The Kemptville District Hospital is striving to put patients first. We are in the process of revising our Patient Bill of Rights and are asking for your comments. Your input helps us to strengthen the care patients receive and makes us accountable for delivering high quality care.

Can you imagine a world where chemotherapy or radiation are obsolete?

Nicolas Ruszkowski VP, Communications Ottawa Hospital Ottawa, December 7, 2010 Almost 50% of patients at our hospital are admitted with cancer or a cancer-related condition. Cancer is a big deal. It has, or will affect someone you know. This spring, Liz Ellwood – the founder of Fertile Future (www.fertilefuture.ca) – spoke to about 500 members of our management team about her experience with cancer. She shed light on the connection between cancer and infertility. Radiation or chemotherapy treatment – particularly in ovarian or cervical cancer – can cause irreversible harm to a woman’s reproductive ability. Testicular cancer can have the same impact on men. It was a dramatic reminder of the risks of traditional cancer therapy. Dr. John Bell, a researcher at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, recently received the Dr. J. David Grimes Research Career Achievement Award for his research into a therapy that has the potential to remove such risks: “oncolytic viruses”.

Patient Bill of Rights

Recently, Dr. Bell and his partners began testing such viruses among cancer patients in Canada, the USA and Asia. These “Phase I” trials – conducted with people for whom all other treatment has failed and who are not expected to survive –determine if the new therapy is safe, and if so, what dose to use for future studies. The viruses have proven safe, with few side effects. They also show encouraging results. In one trial, a liver cancer patient whose tumour had spread to the neck saw the growth almost disappear after it was injected with the virus. Another trial tested intravenous injection of an oncolytic virus in 23 patients with various end-stage cancers. It was the first in the world to show that a virus can selectively replicate inside tumours after intravenous delivery. The finding shows that in addition to primary tumours, the viruses can attack metastases. Determining whether the viruses will lead to a cure will take more trials and many more years. But for the first time, we honestly hope that that if a cure for cancer is ever found, it could come from research being led right here in Ottawa. Nicolas Ruszkowski is VP Communications and Outreach at The Ottawa Hospital. Each week, he will share behindthe-scenes insight from the hospital. E-mail him at nruszkowski@toh.on.ca

About 10 years ago, he discovered that the genetic mutations that occur when cells become cancerous make them more susceptible to certain viruses. Using this knowledge, he manufactures viruses, turning them into cancer-fighting machines that destroy tumours without harming normal tissue.

Santa was in shock. He was so happy that he felt better. Well not really better but his heart felt better because he felt so jolly. Qurinci, Zot, Sot, Vot and Cot were flying the sleigh and they had went to so many kid’s houses already. They were done except for one final house. The boys name was Joe. When they landed on his house, Qurinci and Sot went through the chimney. It got warmer and warmer until they finally stopped. They found out that the fire was still going. They blew and blew however the fire got bigger. Qurinci then remembered that he was magical, so he poofed and puffed and it blew out. Qurinci and Sot jumped down and found Joe sleeping on the couch. Cot the little leprechaun went under the couch with his sac of toys. Sot gave Joe match box cars, a train set and some Lego. Sot quickly ran to the chimney and jumped up on to the sleigh. They were speeding through the air hitting snow flakes and breaking the wind. Santa looked out his window and knew that Christmas was saved by his fellow friend Zot the jolly leprechaun.

it was possible for someone to help people in the community. Robert joined the Kemptville Lions Club in 1985, sponsored by Norm Goldberg. He has served in many different capacities over the years including, president, treasurer, chairman of various committees, zone chairman and region chairman. A few years ago, the Kemptville Lions Club named Robert as “Lion of the Year. Robert reports that this was a nice sentiment from his fellow members and one which he appreciated immensely. Robert believes that being a member of the Lions Club is a wonderful way to put something back into the community.

He enjoys being able to serve the folks in the place where he lives, shoulder to shoulder with like-minded individuals. Robert says that, like most other worthwhile pursuits in life, you get out of Lions what you put in. We wish Robert all the best for future years as they continue to energetically serve the people of Kemptville. The Lions Club has been busy on several different projects. North Grenville promotes affordable housing JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com

The North Grenville council continues to be proactive when it comes to investing in growth. A plan by LA Group Construction in Kemptville to build 136 housing units over a two-phase program, has just been given a boost by the North Grenville council. The Stanley Fields Cooperative Development Corporation is behind the plan to bring the first affordable housing project to North Grenville. At their Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday, Dec. 6 the newly elected council had a lengthy discussion about whether or not to give the green light to a request by the building company to waive or at least defer more than $1 million in expected development charges. Andy Brown, the municipality’s CAO, had recommended that instead of waiving the development charges completely, the council could decide to simply defer them for 10 years, interest free. The plan would allow LA Group Construction to lower the prices on their units, which would keep them as affordable as possible. When the 10 years is up, the development charges would come due and would be paid by either the homeowner or the non-profit group that is helping to bankroll the development in Kemptville. Development charges come from water and sewer installations for homes. The cost is usually rolled into the price of a home. “We ran the idea by our auditors,” explained Brown. “Not only have we reviewed it, but it has been reviewed by the United Counties Housing and the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation for affordability measures. He added that the municipality had a good look at what the Stanley Field project was all about before recommending development charge deferment. “We have

been working diligently with the developer,” he said. In a backgrounder to the council about the issue the CAO stated, “Past councils have discussed assistance but since no projects have been developed, no program was ever established.” Mayor Dave Gordon was all for the plan to help the housing project out. “We all had our concerns,” he said, “but everything is OK.” Gordon said that the housing project is a great idea. He said that there were people who would never be able to afford a home any other way. Two councillors had some reservations about deferring the development fees. Coun. Finnerty and Coun. Tim Sutton wanted more time to look over the proposed deal. “I want to see the project go forward,” said Sutton, “But I need more information.” He added that he did not think the plan made for good economics. Coun. Sutton’s main concern is that the deal will likely cost the municipality close to $400,000 in lost interest and opportunity. He said that he would have liked to see the developer pay the development charges and the municipality defers other items from the development charge list. Brown said that the municipality had two options. The first was to waive the charges all together which would have left the taxpayer off the hook. The second option was to defer the charges, help the developers get their housing project under way and then wait for the repayment in 10 years time or when the units are resold. A deal has been signed between Alex Heath of Options for Homes Eastern Ontario, and Gilles Brisebois to build two new developments in Kemptville and in Kingston. The value of the combined affordable housing projects is $55 million. In a 3 to 2 recorded vote the council decided to go ahead with their staff ’s recommendations. On Monday, Dec. 13 the council voted to go ahead with the deferment.

Kemptville 73’s split games this week BRIAN WILSON Special to the Advance

Evenly matched against the Hawks, the 73’s win with a shootout. On Friday, Dec. 10, Kemptville traveled to the Robert Hartley Sports Complex in Hawkesbury to take on the Hawks. The game turned out to be a fast-paced, evenly-matched affair. After a scoreless first period, the Hawks drew first blood scoring a short-handed goal four minutes into the second. With less than two minutes left in the period, Nick Duhn evened things up with his ninth of the year. Jake Clark and Josh Pitt assisted on the goal. In the third, Hawkesbury

scored to take the lead again but Jake Clark tied the game. The goal was set up by Ben Hutton and Josh Pitt. The goal was Clark’s eleventh of the season. There was no scoring in the overtime. The shoot out went through four players and Kemptville came away with the victory. Josh Pitt and Jake Clark were named first and third stars respectively. Earlier in the week, the 73’s were again active in the personnel area. Kemptville sent defenseman Connor McGrath to Hawkesbury in return for defenseman Donovan Gardiner. Gardiner is a resident of Carleton Place. Sunday, Dec. 12, saw the Corn-

wall Colts travel through the freezing rainstorm to Kemptville to challenge the 73’s. The Colts are currently in first place in the Robinson Division. The 73’s were up for the challenge. The game was very fast paced, finishing in a little under two hours. The first two periods were scoreless with all the action happening in the third. Nine minutes into the frame, Alex Brenton, on a beautiful feed from Michael Rowbotham beat the Cornwall goaltender. Brock Plouffe picked up the second asBrian Wilson Photo sist. Finally, the community plan committee will not be appointed until the Strategic Plan is updated in 2011. There are more than 25 committees and advisory groups looking for members. Probiotics, prebiotics, and nutraceuticals DON MERCER Associate Professor, Food Science Kemptville Campus University of Guelph

“Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food”. This is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the Father of Western Medicine which clearly establishes a linkage between diet and a person’s overall health and well-being. Although it was made over 2,400 years ago, it is just as true now as it was back then. Every day, we are bombarded with advertisements making claims about the benefits of certain foods. Some are rich in fibre, while others are excellent sources of things we never even knew existed, and can’t pronounce when we see them on an ingredient line. We hear terms like “probiotics”,

“prebiotics”, and “nutraceuticals” - words whose actual meanings and significance may not be all that obvious. In fact, when words fail to convey a specific concept, new ones are often made up to suit the intended purpose. “Nutraceutical” is one such word. It combines “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical” to indicate a food that has both health and medical advantages. It is a word that didn’t exist until about 20 years ago. “Functional foods” is another term used to describe these foods. Nutraceuticals are typically foods which contain compounds having medicinal or therapeutical value. Cranberries are an example of a food that not only tastes great, but is good for you as well. They contain Vitamin C along with a substance that prevents bacteria from ad-

hering to the bladder wall where they could grow and promote infection. The acidity of cranberry juice also helps create an environment that can ward off infection. Blueberries have similar beneficial properties. In addition, cranberries and blueberries con-

tain certain antioxidants which are quite attractive to researchers for their beneficial roles in the body. “Probiotics” are living microorganisms which are considered to promote good health. Lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria are examples of probiotics. They are found in products such as yogurt to which cultures are added as part of the fermentation process. Once in the intestinal tract, they flourish to the point where potentially harmful bacteria that come along cannot grow due to the competition from these beneficial microorganisms.

“Prebiotics” are a more recent addition to our vocabulary and are substances which when consumed are not digested by us. Instead, they act as a nutrient source for the good probiotic bacteria. This encourages the probiotic bacteria to grow in a favourable environment, which in turn reduces the chances that harmful microorganisms may start to grow in our digestive tract. Inulin is a prebiotic that has been widely used in processed foods. Essentially, it is a type of fibre obtained from the roots of plants such as chicory, Jerusalem artichoke, and even dandelions.

While all of this may seem like a lot of scientific mumbo-jumbo, it really isn’t all that hard to adapt our diets to include such healthy food choices. Yogurts with live bacterial cultures are readily available in the dairy product sections of super-markets. Food processors are now using soluble fibres, such as inulin, in a number of their product formulations to promote healthier eating habits. As always, you should consult your family doctor or health care professional to see which foods are right for you, and if there are any problems associated with eating any of these products.

O Christmas tree LJ MATHESON

laurie.matheson@metroland.com

There is nothing like a natural Christmas tree to enjoy during the holiday season. That is the general consensus from the masses who visited local tree farms in the weeks leading up to Christmas in search of the perfect tree. The look, the scent and the feel of a real tree are integral parts of the warm, homey atmosphere of our most festive season,” said Gary Thomas of Thomas Tree Farm, located near North Gower. The farm started in 1983 when Thomas decided that renting his farm land for corn growers wasn’t what he wanted to do any longer. Each year to follow, he planted three acres of balsam, pine and spruce trees. They grow in a 10-year rotation so there are always plenty of trees to cut. Last year, he says he harvested about 1,000. “Pine trees were popular in the 1980s – probably about 60 per cent of the market. They hold the needles longer.” But now, customers are seeking the perfect spruce or fir tree, he said. “Spruce trees last about a month and they are stronger

compared to a fir tree. They support the ornaments better,” said Thomas. “I also get in precut fraser fir from north of Toronto. We can’t grow them here because of the soil, but there is a call for them. Our customers have asked for them.” Prices range from $45 to $75 depending on the type, and if they are pre-cut or you-cut varieties. HST is included in all the prices. When people visit the tree farm, he added, “We don’t sell a tree, we sell an experience. It’s about the smell, the look… the different choices.” Families can enjoy a horsedrawn or tractor wagon ride, a bonfire to warm chilly souls; purchase an evergreen wreath or enjoy hot chocolate and homemade cookies. Gary and Ruth Thomas prepare some 10,000 oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, which they give away to their customers. “We have two industrial ovens and we bake about 2,400 a day. It’s quite a production.” Thomas says most of their clients are from the area. “Some 80 per cent of our clients are from Kanata, Barrhaven and Richmond,” he said. “Others come from Quebec and further south.”

Horse and wagon rides are a family treat at Thomas Tree Farm in North Gower. Bronwyn Harkness of North Gower, right, shows some of the wreaths available at the tree farm. She has worked there for four years and says the experience is wonderful as it’s a happy time of year and everyone is excited to choose a perfect tree with their family. Choosing the perfect tree is a cherished tradition in many families, like the Slack family from Barrhaven. “We came here last year for the first time,” said Tim Slack. “The boys are a little older now and they seem to be having fun.” Whether you visit a retail lot or join the tens of thousands who treasure their annual visit to a choose-and-cut farm, you will enjoy knowing that your natural Christmas tree is great for the environment and provides employment for thousands of Canadians. A real tree is environmentally

friendly and can be mulched after the holiday season. The tree farm also employs about 14 students on weekends leading up to the holiday season. In the summer, there area two or three students hired who help with pruning. They have others – adults – who operate the wagon rides. Happy Holidays

A Christmas Miracle Grade 5, Holy Cross

said Santa. “Good bye sir,” said the kids, as the sled took off. Back when Santa got to the North Pole, he headed to the workshop for some very special requests. “We need a puppy, a red bike with a horn and a doll for some very special children,” shouted Santa. “Right away Santa!” answered the elves. That Christmas eve, the Parish family were all in bed except for little Lucy who was sitting up in bed and praying for Santa to come. Or course, Santa had left the North Pole already and was almost on John Street. When he entered the Parish family’s home, he reached into his sack and took out a puppy, a red bike and a doll and with his Christmas magic, he poofed out a Christmas tree and all the decorations. It was not long until he was gone and it was time to wake up. The children woke up

with excitement and went downstairs. What they saw took their breath away. There were presents and shiny lights and they were filled with joy. They hugged the new puppy and rode the bike and played with the doll. It was a beautiful Christmas and one they would never forget. That day they really felt that Christmas Magic.

Christmas is a season to by jolly. Towns full of delightful carolers singing jolly songs. Every family in town would have a Christmas tree except for the Parish family who lived down John Street. They lived in a small blue house and could just afford to put one meal on the table every night. They were a family of six, two boys and two girls. They couldn’t afford to buy turkey for Christmas dinner. Some children in town would point and stare at them as they stared in the toy shop windows. All the children had ever wanted was a toy from the Blue Jay Toy Shop. Lucy had wanted a brand new doll and Tom wanted a red bike with a horn and Dan wanted a puppy. Mom and Dad couldn’t afford to buy toys so instead they made their own sine their dad worked with wood. He made them a rocking horse and cradle for their baby, Emma. One morning Tom and Lucy went to the toy shop window and stared at the toys. The looks on their faces were sadder than ever. At the same time as this was happening, in the North Pole, Santa and his elves were working hard. Every day for two hours Santa looked in the globe and it saw Tom and Lucy at the toy shop window with the frowns on their faces. He was already planning a special trip. Santa got on his sleigh and Mrs. Claus handed him a bag with some

cookies inside. Santa yelled the reindeer names and was gone into the air in no time at all. At exactly 1:30 in the afternoon, he landed in their town and headed to the Blue Jay Toy Shop and questioned the kids, “Why are you so sad? You have toys at home, don’t you?” “Yes, but…” Lucy said. “But what?” asked Santa. “We don’t have many. There are some made of wood. Our Papa made them because they can’t afford to buy store bought toys. But some of these store bought toys can do so many cool things,” they explained to Santa. “Oh well, that’s too bad, what did you children want?” asked Santa. “I want a doll and Tom here wants that red bike but Dan at home wants a puppy,” said Lucy. “Those are wonderful things to want but I am afraid I must be going but that you for talking to me,”

SANTA COOKS WITH THE O.P.P. The third annual O.P.P. Christmas Charity Barbecue hit the spot. On Thursday, Dec. 2, the O.P.P. station was the place to be for a great hot snack and to get into the Christmas spirit. Diners brought donations of food, toys and money for the Salvation Army Christmas Campaign. Santa’s Substitute

BARAK ROACH Gr. 5 South Branch

The elves were working very hard this year until Mrs. Claus had an announcement. “Shh everyone” said Mrs. Claus. “I’m afraid that there will have to be a cancellation on Christmas. Santa is ill and needs his rest” yelled Mrs. Claus.

The elves started to cry continually. “PLEASE QUEIT DOWN!!” yelled Santa. All the elves went their rooms except for one. He was the smallest of them all. He spoke as loud as he could and said “I’ll volunteer to get the presents around the world and back”. Mrs. Claus turned around with a tear on her cheek and said “I’m afraid I cannot do that but there is one

thing I need you to do, go pick up Santa’s prescription.” “Ok” said the elf. After the elf got Santa’s prescription he went to Santa’s room to give it to him. Then when he got to Santa’s room he thought just

ask Santa if he can be the substitute. When he asked Santa he said yes. So on Christmas Eve the elf set off. It took him till midnight to deliver all the presents. When he got back he started to cheer with the other

elves but the said “Uh-oh.” Because he saw Mrs. Claus with her arms crossed. “I’m just joking it was a brave thing you did,” said Mrs. Claus. Then Santa said “Ho, ho, ho, thank you again”.

The Stocking Surprise LIAM FROM SOUTH BRANCH One Christmas Eve the stockings hung over the fireplace, and loomed in the dark. Then, just as the clock struck 12, something came down the chimney. Boom!!! Then something came out of the fireplace. It had a red and white suit with a belt that said Nicholas Saint Claws. It had a huge bag over his shoulder. Then he put something in the stockings. From that moment I promised to see the

surprise in the morning. When he went up the chimney I followed him. When I got to the top there was a red sleigh with nine reindeer. I jumped in the back seat and it took off. When he spotted me he said, “How did you get in the back of my sleigh? “I got in here when you landed on my house, I answered.“Well let us get you back home! Santa said. By the time I got home my mom had already put the Christmas stuff away. I guess I will never know the stocking surprise.

South Branch Elementary School - Grade 1 thoughts on Santa The meaning of Christmas Santa wears glasses. He wears a red suit. He says ho ho ho merry Christmas. He is big. He has a beard. He brings toys to boys and girls. He likes ookies and milk. He is jolly. I like Santa. Dawson Santa is a man. He has black boots. He says ho ho ho. He is big. He gives presents to boys and girls. He is nice. He has a white beard. He has brown hair. He has winkly eyes. He is jolly. I

love Santa. Cam Santa brings toys to boys and girls. His real name is Santa Claus. Santa can disappear down chineys. He wears a red hat and black boots. Santa says ho-ho-ho Merry Christmas. Santa is jolly. He is careful not to break the rooftop. He is bit. He wears a red coat. He wears glasses. He is a good man. Matthew

T’was the night of Christmas Not a pet was creeping It was totally silent And our stockings were hanging On our bedroom doors Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas

Snowflakes fall And fun to all Now Santa is here To all some presents And lots of love, Christmas if finally here.

Fisher savours ‘second home’ with Senators By Rob Brodie OttawaSenators.com In a lot of eyes, he’ll always be that fresh-faced young player who brings an abundance of energy every time he’s on the ice. So when you hear Mike Fisher suggest — in a joking tone, mind you — that “I’m no spring chicken anymore,” it’s easy to quickly dismiss such a thought. And at age 30, the Ottawa Senators centre is far from the end of the line in National Hockey League terms. But the fact that Fisher is now in his 11th season with the team… even that seems a little much to fathom for a guy who,

along with captain Daniel Alfredsson and defenceman Chris Phillips, forms the Senators’ veteran core. “It sure has gone fast, that’s for sure,” Fisher said when asked about his longevity in Ottawa. “It seems like almost yesterday that I was coming in here as a young guy. Then before you know it, it’s 11 years later. You don’t realize how fast it goes. “I think it makes you appreciate playing in this game. I’ve been blessed to be able to stay in Ottawa. I love it here. It’s become like my second home. I feel very fortunate.” Truth be told, Fisher had a

sense this was the right place to be right from that June day in Buffalo, when the Senators made him their second-round pick (44th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. “I had lots of relatives there,” Fisher said in recalling a day that is special for every aspiring young hockey player. “An aunt and uncle from Ottawa, they were there. My family is from Peterborough. So when my name was called by Ottawa, I was pretty excited to be coming (to a team) so close to home. I think my whole family was, too. It was one of my teams that I would have loved to have (been drafted by) and it worked out.” Fisher joined the Senators as a 19-year-old, admittedly in awe of players such as Alfredsson, Marian Hossa and Alexei Yashin, who were the team’s stars when he first arrived on the scene. Only Alfredsson and Phillips remain from Fisher’s first Senators team and now he’s one of the guys the younger generation looks up to for advice and guidance. “I like being in a leadership role,” said Fisher. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, you

can still learn and grow and do a lot of different things better. I’m still trying to do that. At this point in my career, I know I still have a lot more in me and I don’t want to leave anything behind when it’s all said and done.” There might be nobody better than Fisher to tell the next crop of Senators how good life can be in Ottawa — not that he imagined it all playing out this way. Fans still adore him and his tireless work with Roger’s House and other charities has made him a community icon. Life got even better during the summer when Fisher married country music superstar Carrie Underwood in a lavish Georgia wedding. “You never really know what life is going to bring sometimes,” said Fisher. “But I’m very fortunate to be in the league this long and to play for Ottawa.… I love playing here every night. The fans have been really good to me and I’m grateful for that. Hopefully, I can call it home for the rest of my career. That would be ideal.”

The Capitals have wasted little time in showing they’re among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference once again. Any discussion about the Caps always begins and ends with the mercurial Alex Ovechkin, a goal-scoring threat every time he touches the puck. He gets plenty of support up front from the likes of Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom, while Brooks Laich and Mike Knuble supply a dose of grit. Mike Green ranks among the NHL’s top offensive threats on the blue line, with rookie John Carlson a rising young talent. The unheralded Michal Neuvirth has carried the bulk of the goaltending load so far.
