Students from across the Upper Canada School Board converged on the University of Guelph Kemptville College Campus to take part in a unique meeting of the minds. The occasion was a student senate meeting featuring M.P.P. Steve Clark held on Friday, Dec. 10. Clark spoke about his life of volunteering and how helping others can become a life-long experience. There were more than 40 students at the campus. Each Upper Canada School Board school had two students who volunteer to serve as a student senator. The meeting provided a special opportunity for students to share ideas, challenges and solutions. Libby Good is a Grade 11 student who is a member of the North Grenville District High School students’ council. This was her second time at a senate meeting. “I enjoy going to the meetings,” said Good. “We are all on the same page and everyone there wants to be there.” SENATE see page 6

73’s split games at CHL Showcase BRIAN WILSON Special to the Advance

The fifth annual Holiday Showcase weekend for the CHL proved to be very successful for the league and their players. This is the first year that the showcase was not held at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. The change in venue

to the Bells Sensplex was brought about with the decision that the Kanata location is a more central location and the accommodations available are very good. The league is also partnering with the Ottawa Senators. League commissioner, Kevin Abrams, praised the 73’s organization for their work at the previous showcases. SHOWCASE see page 15 418118

can campaigned on the basis of bringing change to the township, He commented, “We held our first council meeting and we made a firm commitment to make some changes. We have to do a better job of doing this,” he added. Central to the idea of creating an environment where a council can get more work done, Duncan pointed out that while all the members of the council are friends with eachother, they are able to agree to disagree on issues. Mayor Duncan explained that he had several issues he wanted to explore with the council. One was about the idea of having a full-time economic development officer, and another was looking at ways to market North Dundas and attract more people and industry to the area. A crucial issue in the township is the condition and cost of their road maintenance. North Dundas currently spends a great deal of their road budget putting gravel down on many rural roads. They have to spend an estimated $500,000 keeping up with the yearly cycle of replacing gravel that may have been laid down, but lost due to weather and traffic. The cost of tar and chipping those same roads would enable the township to save on gravel costs. Some voters feel that tar and chipping the roads would pay for itself over time simply from the savings from not using gravel each year. Duncan feels that something has to be done about the operating costs for the townships roads maintenance. “There are a lot of creative things we can do,” he said. Pointing out that the new council would have to look at ways to move forward with longer range plans than in the past. “We have to be more modern in our approach to issues,” he said. The new mayor feels that an open and accessible council will have an easier time finding the kinds of solutions voters are looking for when it comes to local issues.

A first in many years, the wellattended meeting began with Mayor Douglas Struthers and the six elected council members taking their oaths prior to being sworn in at the inaugural council meeting held on December 13 at the Merrickville-Wolford council chambers. The first order of business was the election of a deputy mayor. Since Struthers lives in Merrickville ward, the deputy is traditionally a Wolford resident. Dave Nash was the only Wolford Ward councillor prepared to accept a nomination and he was acclaimed as deputy. “I think the other two fellows are just too busy with their farms, but I have more time and I’m looking forward to it,” said Dave Nash. The five new councillors found themselves dealing with issues on the agenda that had been started by the previous council, but took it all in stride. “True to form and the way they all campaigned, the new council members were very positive and constructive, a great group,” said Struthers, who is serving his fourth term as Mayor. The newly elected councillors, Anne Barr, Vic Suthren, Dave Nash, Dave Snowdon and Don Halpenny had all thoroughly familiarized themselves with their packages and were well prepared. “We would have barked if there had been something that was totally obscure,” said Suthren. While not completely clear on every detail of previous issues they were quick to ask for clarification when needed. Retired teacher, Timothy Molloy, the only returning incumbent found himself in a familiar role as he explained the finer points of land severances or the details of a complex application. “It was a pleasant and appropriate first meeting to what needed to be done,” said Molloy following the meeting. Barely an hour long, Merrick-

ville-Wolfords first council meeting ran smoothly. “The meeting went very well, certainly a light agenda – nothing new just a continuation of business from previous council,” said Struthers.

Looking forward to 2011

Kemptville Campus sports reaches out

There is a carousel of coming events that just keeps showering this part of Ontario with lots to ponder, agonize over and debate. There are issues large and small on the 2011 horizon. They include the annual pledge by world leaders to end war as well as the disparities between the western world and all third world countries. Along the way, Canadians have to decide what to do with their penny and locally we all have to find a way to ease the reality of rural poverty, either with more jobs or at least awareness. There has been an increase of alternative energy plans in the area and it will not be too long before we have a wind turbine debate. North Grenville council starts off their new term facing different challenges than in the past. Everything seems to be going according to plan so the trick will be to keep the municipality going in the right direction. The consensus is that all is well with North Grenville. There is growth all over the municipality. Most of it is centered along County Road 43 where the future Walmart store will be. Kemptville residents can expect a new Canadian Tire to go along with Walmart and Staples. In the meantime, the North Grenville Chamber of commerce keeps itself busy as new members sign up for what will be a healthy future in the community. The New North Grenville Public Library is more than a reality as constructions moves along and construction of the new public high school continues while additions to St. Michael Catholic High School are underway. With a great deal to look forward to, area residents are in the driver’s seat for a change enjoying the great scenery they can see as North Grenville moves down a path of planned prosperity and apparent success. This is a good time to be able to live in rural Ontario. From North Dundas all the way west to Merrickville-Wolford and down to Edwardsburgh-Cardinal the situation is similar. The residents from these areas have the enviable task of taking advantage of the positive atmosphere where they live and savoring the fruits of their labors.

It is becoming unsafe for Vicky to continue to live on her own. If I were a stay-at-home Mom, we could move our aging parents and grandparents into the spare wing of the house. There they would enjoy their golden years, and pass their wisdom on to the younger generation – our children and grandchildren. We work outside the home, and we are not able to move our aging family members in with us. It is time to find a new home for Vicky. Vicky has been through some hard winters, living in a little schoolhouse in Quebec where her husband hunted, she gardened and they traded their goods for eggs at the farm down the road. As a single mom of four boys and one girl, Vicky learned to be thrifty, resourceful, creative and optimistic. When she doesn’t understand or cannot hear what you are saying, she giggles. She doesn’t get frustrated or upset – she just laughs. That’s Vicky. And this gorgeous woman, who still paints her nails to match her russet-red hair, deserves the very best for the last few seasons of her long life.

Focus on what children do right instead of what they do wrong. Let’s notice when our children do well. Let’s tell them that we admire their talents, abilities, and manners; their friendship skills, intelligence and kindness. Let’s talk to them about the good things we observe in them and encourage them in their activities and interests.

Teach young people to be responsible for their thoughts, words & actions. When you involve children in activities with other adults who model good positive values, you can show them how to develop these values for themselves.

Encouraging children, showing them positive values, helping them cope with stress and giving them responsibilities can help raise healthy, caring, responsible children and build a brighter future.

four distinct seasons – but they mark the passage of time in a way that clearly shows you how fast life is passing. Last winter we were praying for a dear friend with brain cancer. This winter we are burying him. It’s been almost three years since we lost my dad. But as I watched the movie “The Bucket List” last week, the tears ran down my face. It is very difficult to recover from the loss of a permanent fixture in one’s heart. I have friends entering menopause, fighting cancer, burying their husbands. Yesterday we were in high school. The best we can do is to surround ourselves with positive people, to keep traveling up hill, and to pause to appreciate the moments. This morning my mother called to tell me she would not be at Sunday dinner. Instead she would be visiting with her own 95-year-old mother Vicky, who had recently suffered a fall. Vicky was only slightly hurt in the fall, thank goodness, but it put things into perspective. Occasionally she falls down and has to remain on the floor for several hours until she is discovered. She has left the water running in the bathroom for the entire day. She left the milk to burn on the stove.

Attempting to slow down life I don’t k n o w h o w life sudd e n l y became so busy. We don’t have kids to ferry around to hockey or The Accidental soccer; Farmwife only one remains at home and she is pretty self-sufficient. We have less than a fifteen minute commute to work in Kemptville, and we spend the majority of each weekend at home. Still, life goes whizzing by. Some of our best moments are spent at the dinner table, in the garden, or in the barn. Just living, working, talking together. The best memories are not built in front of the television or computer. The computer is a necessary evil, keeping us connected to work and friends and news in the rest of the world. But I think we can do without the TV. In 2011, the Farmer and I are going to look at our life to see how we might attempt to slow it down by simplifying things a bit. I love living in a region with

SENATE from the front Good appreciated what Clark had the say about his own experience as a volunteer. Clark first tested the waters of volunteering when he was in high school. He started his as a member of the student government at the Thousand Islands Secondary School. In a press release from the event he said, “When I graduated I said, I think everybody needs to get involved in student government in some way. I really believe it is an important part of being a student.” Clark believes that those years of volunteering and serving his school and community prepared him for his political path. At the age of 22, he became the youngest mayor in Canada when he was elected as mayor of Brockville. Despite his ever increasing commitment to his job as mayor and later a career with the Brockville Recorder and Times, and then as the Executive Director for now Senator Bob Runciman and

as the Chief Administrative Office for the Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands he still found time to volunteer. “It was important to me to still get involved in the community,” he said, adding, “It was something I kept with me as an adult.” “He had a lot to say,” remembers Good who says she enjoyed Clark’s presentation. “It makes you think,” she said. “He made a lot of sense.” Being part of the student senate as well as the school’s student council has been a positive experience for Good. “I always bring back a notebook filled with ideas,” she said referring to the give and take of information at the meeting. All of the students at the meeting have an opportunity to share their ideas and challenges as well as solutions to school issues. “We discuss different issues and how we can approach them,” said Good. The North Grenville student feels that Clark’s experience shows that everyone, in some way, can make a difference.

CHRISTMAS from page 4 The preponderance of Christmas movies on our airwaves must be particularly annoying to those of us who don’t celebrate Christmas, but it is annoying enough to everybody. But just as all Christmas music is not icky — think of the traditional carols, the Messiah, even the Charlie Brown music of Vince Guaraldi — not all Christmas entertainment is pointless and insulting. The play nativity just concluding its run at the National Arts Centre is an enjoyable combination of spirituality, music and farce. Despite its irreverent treatment of the subject (coyotes in the manger!), it doesn’t seem to have offended anyone, which goes to show that audiences are more resilient and open-minded than they are often given credit for. And of course there are the classic movies that you can watch again and again — the original Miracle on 34th Street, just about any version of A Christmas Carol,

It’s a Wonderful Life (with its brilliant portrayal of the hellish life of Bedford Falls had there been no George Bailey) and White Christmas (just to hear Rosemary Clooney sing and watch the world’s most ridiculous plot device: Bing Crosby going on network television to ask people to keep a secret from his old general, Dean Jagger). A couple of the newer ones aren’t so bad. A Christmas Story (1983) has its moments and there is nothing like watching Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa to comfort the truly grouchy among us. The problem is that Hollywood has to keep pumping out new holiday movies each year, the majority of which associate the miracles of the season mostly with couples getting engaged. It all makes you look forward to the New Year, when people can go back to doing what they do best on TV — running through hospitals and shooting at helicopters.

The facts and fiction of Emergency Room wait times

Residents of the Village of Merrickville have several wonderful Christmas traditions. One of them is the annual Road to Bethlehem walk. This past Sunday marked the 15th year. The evening the walk took place bringing the Christmas spirit to everyone.

Yet the system is slowest for those waiting for admission to a hospital bed. The target wait time in this case is 8 hours. Here, we have not improved.

We found hay stacked from ceiling to floor. We jumped from bales perched several meters up, to those down below.

Why?

But there’s been significant progress. Dedicated nurses, doctors and other health professionals ensure most emergency patients receive timely care.

How do we first learn about Emergency Rooms (ER)?

The fun lasted until Stan took aim at pile of hay from high above, and landed on a floor, hidden under only centimeters of hay. There was a loud “crack!” He got up holding his broken arm. He turned pale. We ran for help.

Distributed Thursday, Feb. 17 as a special section to the Canadian Gazette, Kemptville Advance, Perth Courier and Smiths Falls This Week.

For sicker patients who need more care, but not admission to hospital, the wait-time target is 8 hours or less. This is the largest group of ER patients. Over the past year, visits from these patients grew by 16%. Despite the surge, we cared for 85% of within 8 hours. In fact, we treated 5,800 more patients (33 per day) within 8 hours than we did last year.

Take our hospital, for instance. Critically injured patients and those with life threatening conditions are seen within moments. Otherwise, an ER nurse aims to see a patient within 15 minutes, assigning them to one of three streams of care. For those with minor problems, “the walking wounded”, Ontario’s wait time target is less than 4 hours. Thanks to government’s work with

Hospitals operate most efficiently at occupancy levels of 88% to 92%. Unfortunately, for several years we’ve operated every day at more than 100% occupancy (with more patients than beds). As a result, we achieve an 8-hour wait less than 20% of the time. Delays happen not because of ER inefficiencies, but because acute care beds are increasingly occupied by patients who would ideally receive their care outside the hospital, but for whom there is a shortage of care in the community. It’s easy to point fingers at each other to “fix” the system. But no single government, hospital, community or health provider can do it alone. Improvements in ER happened when we all worked together. Let’s do the same to build a plan that ensures every patient receives care in the most appropriate setting. hospitals to divert cases to family doctors or walk-in clinics, and to improve our ability to “fast track” patients through ER when they do visit, the number of such visits declined by 15% since last year. And 75% of patients spend less than 4 hours in ER.

Santa’s Substitute

Christmas Christmas day is the time you spend with your family. Happiness is joy and love. Ready to blow off in the air. In winter we all get excited. Stay and play with your family. Today Christmas is us. Merry Christmas! As we walk upon the stars we are here together. See the joy for all of us! Madison Johnston, South Branch Elementary

It was a dark, cold, and foggy night in the North Pole. Christmas Eve night to be exact. But the problem was Santa was sick. And lost his charm. An elf started to run after Santa’s charm. Santa couldn’t deliver the presents. Who would? “I will,” said a soft thin voice. Who are you?” said Santa. “The name is Vanstrangleburger, George Vanstrangleburger.” “Hey,” said George. “What’s that elf running around for?” “Ohhhh him, he was chasing my charm and ran into a pole,” said Santa. “So,” said George. “You lost your charm?” “YES,” cried Santa So that night Santa’s Elves made George take a test for driving a sled. George perfected the sled test but when he got back the elves were very dizzy. But the hardest challenge for George was learning the reindeers’ names. He didn’t know which one was which. There was Blitzen, Commit, Cupid, Dasher, Dancer, Donner, Prancer, and Vixion. So that night George delivered all the presents on time. So Santa found his charm and was ready for next year! Christmas was saved.

The CLICK program provides patients and their families access to technology, helping to provide a sense of normalcy for the children while staying at the hospital. It allows them to stay in touch with family and friends, to explore the Internet or keep up with school work. “I think kids continue to be kids while they’re in hospital,” said Maureen Jones, Child Life specialist at CHEO.“The fact that they can (use technology) to keep up with their friends while 4 Course Dinner they’re here and continue to increase their level of proficiency DJ with the gaming is a big thing.” Champagne at Midnight Video games provide a distraction for children undergoing sometimes difficult treatments By Reservation Only! at the hospital and can serve as a $75.00 per person therapy enhancer, Jones said. “Kids can actually utilize (the games) to focus away from any Located Downstairs at pain from treatment, and really 28 Clothier St. East, Kemptville allows the treatments to go a little easier.” The event was attended by Laureen Harper, wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who expressed her support for the program. “I never cease to be amazed Something for Catering Available how stoic the children are,” Harp- everyone!

493 teams to vie for Bell Capital Cup JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Over 8,000 hockey players will descend on Ottawa from Dec. 29 to Jan. 3 for the 12th annual Bell Capital Cup. The tournament, which runs from Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, will see teams come from as far as Beijing, China. “Average-wise, I’d say we are expecting around 8,380 players,” said Matt Bennett, the general manager for the Bell Capital Cup. Last year’s cup saw 8,500 players take part. Players from 19 divisions will take to the ice during the five-day competition, with 493 teams vying for a championship spot. “When everything is all said and done we’ll have 993 games played,” said Bennett. Fourteen teams will be attending from various parts of Europe and Asia, and for the first time South Korea will take part in the cup tournament, said Bennett. The Ottawa-area will be well represented, with 265 teams competing for the top spot, including the Kemptville Rangers, Kemptville Coyotes and the Metcalfe Russell River Rats. “Every district in the ODHA (Ottawa District Hockey Association) will be represented this year,” said Bennett. Teams will also be coming from British Columbia, Nunavut, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Twenty-two rinks will play host to the games, from Navan to Aylmer to Kanata, said Bennett, with every championship game being played at Scotiabank Place. “I think it’s definitely going to be one of the most memorable hockey experiences they’re going to have,” said Bennett. “On the ice they’re meeting kids from different cities, different countries.”

FAN FEST This year, the first-annual Fan Fest will be held at the Bell Sensplex on Dec. 29. NHL Ottawa Senators alumni will be present, along with a Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit and a sports memorabilia auction with funds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario, said Bennett. “It’s just to kind of welcome everybody into town and get everybody in the mood for the week ahead,” he said. “We’re hoping to make it an annual event.” Players also get the added bonus of attending an Ottawa Senators game. “On Dec. 29 we’re going to send 6,100 kids to the Sens game against Carolina, and about 500 kids to the Leafs (vs. Sens) game (on Jan. 1),” said Bennett. He said the Bell Capital Cup is expected to bring in around $15 million for the local economy. Tournament passes sell for $12 and cover all five days. Adult day passes go for $5, senior day passes for $3. Children under 12 attend for free. Ticket sales are used to support local minor hockey associations and charities. Kemptville 73’s share spotlight SHOWCASE from the front Abrams stated, “This weekend was very beneficial for the players as between 60-70 organizations were in attendance at various times over the weekend.” Coaches, scouts and recruiters from NHL, OHL, QJMHL CIS and NCAA were present. Even a representative from the NHL Central Scouting was there. Abrams also said, “As the NCAA programs have started their Christmas break, more coaches than usual are able to get away.” Ted Ward, the VP of Business Operations for the league, ensured that the weekend ran smoothly. Kemptville played the first of their two games on Friday night, Dec. 17. The Cumberland Grads provided the opposition. The 73’s opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Michael Rowbotham scored his sixth of the season with assists from Brock Plouffe and Alex Brenton. The Grads notched the only goal of the second period and tied the game at one. Just a minute and a half into the third, Nick Duhn put Kemptville ahead to stay. The goal was Duhn’s tenth of the year and was setup by Jake Clark and Josh Pitt. Plouffe then scored his

twelfth of the season from Keegan Rowe and Rowbotham. Plouffe was named the game’s first star and Ben Hutton got the nod for third star. Saturday evening, Dec. 18, had Kemptville taking on the Gloucester Rangers. With less than two minutes left in the opening frame, the teams exchanged goals to go into the first intermission tied 1-1. Kemptville’s Pat Cameron scored the goal with an assist from Brandon Lesway. Unfortunately, the wheels came off for the 73’s after the break. Gloucester scored three times in the second taking a 4-1 lead. There was no scoring in the third period. Due to injuries, Kemptville played with two call-ups for the game. Eric Malloy and Daniel Lacroix filled in. The 73’s next see action on Thursday, Dec. 23 in Cornwall, where they will take on the Colts. Cornwall is presently leading the Robinson Division. After the holidays, the first game of the new year has Kemptville playing the Yzerman Division leader, the Pembroke Lumber Kings in Pembroke. The next home game is January 7, 2011 when the Carleton Place Canadians come to town. Catch the excitement!
