The New Year promises to be an interesting one for the Kemptville downtown core. In 2011 the Old Town Kemptville BIA will be moving forward with their vision of a revitalized downtown. The completion of the new North Grenville Public Library this year, the building on the left, will add to the existing revitalization process. Local merchants want to keep pace with commercial development along County Road 43.

As the New Year comes and then goes it is time to get back to some of those community projects that have been on the back burner since before the 2010 municipal election.
The fate of downtown Kemptville is one obvious issue. The Old Town Kemptville Business Improvement Area (BIA) has added to its list of projects the revitalization of downtown Kemptville. North Grenville Councillor Terry Butler is the municipal representative with the BIA. Being a downtown store owner
as well as a long-time resident of North Grenville, he has high expectations about what the New Year will bring. Butler explained that last year the BIA made great progress coming up with a good plan for the downtown area of Kemptville. DOWNTOWN see page 2

There are several issues to be dealt with in the downtown area. The BIA and the municipality have to find a way to invite shoppers to come downtown. Parking is an issue. “There is surplus parking behind many of the building,” said Butler. The parking situation is crucial to any plans to revitalize the downtown core. The BIA and downtown merchants are not alone in there efforts to make the core more meaningful for shoppers and tourists. North Grenville has a community plan that features five main components and goals. The first step in the plan is to provide for community lead-
ership that will enable the community vision to become a reality. The actions that make up that important first step have been taken. The only part of the first step left to do is to update the North Grenville Strategic Plan through public consultation. The next step is to improve the quality of the natural and existing environment in the municipality. The fourth step is to find ways to diversify the local economy ad finally all of the community assets have to be identified and developed. Many of the necessary steps to revitalize the downtown area have been taken. The BIA has been able to broaden its
membership, develop a five-year plan of projects and brought forward programs such as the Dandelion Festival and Canada Day. Despite the success to date Butler says there is still much to be done to make downtown Kemptville a destination for shoppers. “We need to expand on the many things there are to do in North Grenville,” he said. Encouraging local food producers to sell their products in the town is another project in the works for the BIA. Butler feels that there are several interesting ways the town can attract more visitors. “In the last three to four years we have made the cake,” he said, “now we have to put the icing on it.”

when we get together with family and friends,” said John Zelenski, a Carleton psychology professor. “But what we often do (during the holidays) is add to our daily lives, and things become unpredictable.” While people are doing things throughout the holidays that should lead to happiness – like being surrounded by loved ones – Zelenski said hectic schedules, including family gatherings, Christmas shopping and holiday parties, only add to the problem. Stress also relates to holiday sadness, he said, and it’s common for people to feel a sense of depression throughout Christmas right until the new year. This stress and sadness relates often to holiday shopping where debt can build up, and people might feel guilty about not giving to charities because of the cash crunch. However, New Year’s celebrations can bring joy to people, who might see it as the light at the end of the tunnel. “You can look at New Year’s in January as time when there are things to be hopeful about,” Zelenski said. “We do have this sense of new beginnings and a new start. Some people are looking forward to that.” However, as the first week of the New Year’s rolls around, there are some simple rules Zelenski recommends people should follow when trying to get through the holiday blues. Mentally, he said positive emotions can counteract feelings of depression. He advises people to think of ways to inject positive thoughts during times of stress – like big family gatherings. “Think of it as a time to spend a couple extra minutes with the new granddaughter,” he said as an example.

North Grenville Mayor David Gordon is ready to shine a light on his community in the New Year. Considering himself a facilitator more than anything else, the new mayor wants to invite all residents of North Grenville to take part in charting their community’s future. For the past year, residents have been able to see the growth taking place all around them. From a long overdue new public high school to replace the North Grenville District High Joe Morin/Avance Staff School, to a much needed addiSite of the new developement on County Road 43, just west of Hwy. 416 at Colonnade tion to St. Michael High School, to the arrival this January of a new where WalMart will be opening its doors on January 24. Wal-Mart store, Canadian Tire and public library, residents can see evidence of commercial and social growth all around North Grenville. With the New Year here, Mayor David Gordon has plans to ask North Grenville residents what kind of growth they are willing to sustain. Gordon explained that the municipality already has well managed growth thanks to municipal staff. “ North Grenville is fortunate to have great staff,” he said. He added that with the growth, that was already taking place, the next step for the council was to look at how to maintain what has already working and to chart a plan for the future. With the Federal and Provincial government telling municipalities not to expect anything from them in terms of grants and other funding, growth is not guaranteed. Private sector growth may be the only source of noticeable change residents will see in the New Year. Gordon wants to host several town hall meetings in the New Year that will provide an opportunity for residents to discuss what kind of community growth they want. “We have to see, and then decided if we can afford more growth,” said Gordon. “Taxpayers will have to pay for it,” he said, pointed out that the Federal and Provincial well was dry. Crucial to Gordon’s plans is the resident’s participation. “You have to listen to people,” said Gordon who is expecting to hear from the North Grenville community. He said he’s always willing to listen to what residents have to say. COMMUNITY
Shifting gears in the New Year The New Year brings the traditional batch of predictions to sort through. Looking into the future can be entertaining and from time, we glimpse what is in store for a community. All of us look forward to more of the same as long as things worked out in a positive way. For year-long projects, the end of one year and the start of a new one, is a great time to change course or at the very least move on to the next item on the agenda. In North Grenville, all of the action and energy has centered around the construction along County Road 43. New businesses, a hundred or so more jobs, and the development of a commercial area along both sides of the highway, has created a great deal of optimism along with natural concern. Small business in North Grenville will be going head to head with the likes of Wal-Mart before the end of the January. The Town of Kemptville has been divided into two distinct destinations for residents and visitors needing that perfect shopping experience. County Road 43 has been getting all of the attention for the last year now its Old Town Kemptville’s turn. The Kemptville Business Improvement Area, (BIA) in Kemptville is still gaining momentum. Their success is an easy prediction to count on as we all kick off 2011. The success of the relatively small group of business owners who make up the group have formed powerful partnerships with their community. They have hooked up with their municipality and the North Grenville Chamber of Commerce. The BIA members have a vision and a plan. They have already, in just a few years, been able to implement what they believe will be the continuation of a revitalization process of the downtown core. The new North Grenville Public Library is destined to be a kind of anchor for the downtown area. The recently completed business retention and expansion program is another part of the puzzle that when put together with the other pieces presents a completed picture of a revitalized downtown core for Kemptville. It has been a long time coming and now its here.

Support great players Attending any CHL game is a chance to see young talent that is being developed right here in your community. Talent such as Ben Hutton, and Calvin de Haan. Calvin was the 73’s first pick in 2007. He led the 73’s in scoring that year as a 16 year old. He also won the CHL Rookie of the Year. He was selected by the New York Islanders in the first round in the 2010 NHL entry draft. He has earned a spot playing for Canada at the World Juniors for the second straight year. At the recent game in Cornwall, 1251 fans were in attendance. In Pembroke, the attendance was 1411. In Kemptville, the average attendance is 161 per game. The 73’s next action is Friday night, Jan. 7, when the Carleton Place Canadians will be in town for the first half of a home and home series. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. Come out and see the future stars.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles Life is full of wonderful moments. It is also chalk full of opportunities to make the wrong choices. This Christmas I had to wrestle with one of the biggest choices I have ever had to make: How much shortbread to safely eat before my arteries completely plugged up. I found myself, last week, looking forward to Christmas of course but also to the New Year. It is like standing on the equator or being able to stretch your had from breathable air to outer space just a few inches away. The New Year is the perfect time to stand on top of an imaginary mountain and feel free from the consequences of all the choices you made throughout the year before. New Years completes a mystical and universal circle. Then I encountered a plate of freshly baked shortbread covered by a soft cloth, cooling on the kitchen counter. I was walking by at the time on some errand or other and I had to stop. I pulled up a chair and took a closer look at this masterpiece of
JOSEPH MORIN the world of baking. I could almost taste its crumbly, buttery flavored crust and marveled at the little holes impressed on its surface by a fork. This was the demons of all demons, the sharpened bullet that could, with little effort, destroy the efforts of everyone at the heart institute in Ottawa. This was one of those food groups that seemed to exist not to nourish anyone but only to bring pleasure to the palate. There could never be an excuse for shortbread being anything other than a delicious and fattening extravagance. The shortbread I was looking at was at least 12 inches in diameter and around 1 inch thick. From my perspective, it had been abandoned, and it was within my rights to act as a salvager, so to speak, and claim the shortbread for my own. The word share was not on the horizon and the notion of practicing moderation had not entered my mind. A bag of ice-cold milk, a good book and a huge shortbread feast was the only thing on my mind. I began with just one small section that I broke off from the main cookie. It tasted better than my imagination had prepared me. There was no turning back now. I ate another small section, small being about 2 inches by 3 inches. The experience was almost cosmic, and then with a lurch I felt a bit ill as my system tried to find a place to store what was probably a pound of butter and who knows how much sugar. The moment had passed. I was able to turn away from this Christmas goodie and managed to leave almost half of the original shortbread on the plate. In a few reckless moments, I had undone a month’s weight loss. And then I realized that I could always make gaining that lost ground a New Years resolution. And so the circle was completed.

Canadian Horse Artillery in Manitoba. By 1985 he was posted to Germany where he spent four years and got promoted twice, first to Bombardier and then to Master Bombardier. He went on to complete three more tours of duty abroad. “From 1992 to 1993, I was in Cyprus doing peacekeeping,” he recalls. Then in 1997 he was posted to Bosnia. “That was a real eye opener for me,” he says, “ I learned there that we take a lot for granted living in Canada.” As a forward ground controller during that tour, he says he was moved by the devastation he saw. Even more difficult was his final overseas posting to Kosovo in 1999. “We were pulling in as the Serbs were withdrawing and
there were a lot of mines in the area,” he says, “the Serbs had burned everything as they were leaving.” For Brady the six-month Kosovo tour was the hardest. “There were two inches of snow on the ground and there were kids running around in underwear and bare feet – it starts to get to you,” he said. While Kosovo left its scars, Brady has never stopped enjoying what he does and putting his best effort into every endeavour. His latest award, and there have been several, according to his dad, Mervyn Martin, was for a job exceptionally well done during his posting to the 7th Toronto Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery as an Operations Officer and later Battery Sergeant Major.
“The officer I was working with in Toronto, wrote me up for the award, because I was doing such a good job,” says Brady still a little bemused. An avid hockey player since childhood – he used to play with the Merrick Hotel team in Merrickville, and has continued to play hockey – as a goal-tender in the armed forces. “I’ve been to three Canadian Forces Nationals and six all army National Championships,” he says. He also enjoys golf, spending time with his young family and working with his hands. “He’s a super good guy, always helping anyone that needs it, he’s a really hard worker,” says younger brother Cory Martin from his home in Merrickville.
Public Vehicle/Equipment Auction HOWAIDA SOROUR Hard working and responsible from childhood, it was less of a surprise to his mother when Master Warrant Officer Chuck Brady, was presented with the Member of the Order of Military Merit award by Governor General David Lloyd Johnston on Dec 9. “I always figured whatever he was going to do, he was going to put his best effort into it,” says Gertie Martin of Merrickville. His most memorable quality is his immense sense of responsibility, according to his mother. “When he was four years-old I could send him to the bank to deposit or withdraw money and pick up the things we needed at the grocery store!” recalls Gertie Martin. Born in Brockville, Brady grew up in Merrickville, going to school in Kemptville and Smiths Falls. Though school might not
have been his cup of tea, Brady found himself when he enrolled in the armed forces in 1983 – just before he turned 20. He had dropped out of school before graduating but it wasn’t for lack of motivation. “He didn’t finish high school, he worked instead,” says Gertie, “then finished school in the army.” Brady started working at his dad’s sawmill in Merrickville during high school, then went on to do restoration work and helped restore the old woolen mill in town. When the military’s Youth Training Employment Program crossed his radar he saw an opportunity to get out of Merrickville and learn a trade. “I loved basic training, and realized I wanted to do something for my country,” said Brady from his home in Kingston. Initially enrolled as an artilleryman his first posting was with the 3rd Regiment, Royal

The Osgoode native released her short animated film on her own website on Christmas Day called The Good Little Bunny With The Big Bad Teeth – a movie that also has some positive message like the said holiday classics. In the film, the rabbit can’t make it because of his looks, but when his teeth are readjusted toward the end, he discovers a newfound sense of popularity. “This one’s a satire,” she said. “It’s making fun of society and that beautiful people are loved more than others.” The latest production is Borutski’s second animated short film, following I Like Pandas, a 2005 movie she said took her four months to make. The Good Little Bunny, a six-minute flick, took 4½ years to finish. “I made a short film before and I had such a good time making it,” the 27year-old said. “I had this idea in the back of my

film. It was a project that I was working on in my spare time. It was purely just for pleasure. I finished it when I could.” Borutski is currently working at the Ottawa office of Warner Bros. constructing the storyboards and redesigning the characters for a new production of Looney Tunes – due to be released in the spring. She graduated from Algonquin College’s traditional animation program in 2003 and slowly worked her way up. Borutski’s inspiration comes from old Disney and Warner Bros. films from the 1930s and 1940s. She added that her personal projects only involve music to avoid writing a script or paying voice actors. “It’s a lot more simple (that way),” she said. As one who creates her own characters and has an “obsession with drawing rodents,” Borutski said she wants to create an art brand with them on her website. She has another idea about a robot made of garbage called Coasterhead. “I’d love to create more short films and maybe get into directing with work too,” she said. To watch Borutski’s video after Dec. 25, visit her website at www.foolishkingdom.com.

Let’s see if I can make that one last until at least Easter.

Thank you to everyone who sent cards, emails, phone messages and texts full of warm wishes over the holidays. It was a wonderful Christmas on the Fisher farm. One of the notes I received was from Stinky the kitten, who has been renamed Oliver by his adoptive humans. Here it is, in its entirety: “Still tired from the move – though adjusting well to my new digs. From what I can tell, the “holiday” season is upon us. This time of year seems very special – the landlords have set up a beautiful tree and have decorated it with wonderful “toys” for me to bat and swat around the living room. Honestly, every time I knock down one of these “toys”, the landlords pick it back up and return it to the tree – I’m assuming for my later amusement. I’m enjoying spending all this quality time with my new found family. They seem nice but, if I were to make a small comment, they’re a little cheap with the treats for my taste. Don’t get me wrong, they feed me well, but all I want are those treats!!! I’ve started meowing in protest — I’ll let you know how that works for me. The new landlords are cool. They pretty much let me do what I want. One of them even looks like me – though he’s much bigger than me and makes these weird barking noises - his name is Digory and we sometimes sleep together. Contrary to popular belief, I’ve never woken up with any fleas. He’s a veteran so, for the time being, I tend to copy his moves and his sounds – unfortunately, without much success. The best I can manage sounds like a guttural sneeze. The other two landlords think it’s cute when I do this but they also really hope I’m not coming down with something. Last week, they took me outside to play. Let’s just say, things were not how I remembered them. First of all, there was all this white stuff on the ground – I’m not going to lie to you, it gave me paws. Second, there were no lambs, donkeys or horses any-
in a great mood when they get home to me.) Because I feel that playtime is never long enough, I tend to indulge in a few extra rounds at night. That’s when the landlords are subjected to the wrath of my Santa Claws. For some reason, however, this behaviour is being discouraged. Overall, things are great and I’m fitting in quite nicely in this

Budget will be the first big challenge of 2011: Watson LAURA MUELLER laura.mueller@metroland.com
But before anything else gets underway at city hall in 2011, council will need to take care of the budget. That’s Mayor Jim Watson’s No.1 priority for the first year of his term at the helm of city council. “It will set the stage for everything we’re going to do in the year,” he said. It won’t be easy – Watson was already successful in getting council to put a 2.5per cent cap on budget increases for all departments, and the entire budget process must be wrapped up by March. We’ve already seen one department begin to grapple with those limits – the Ottawa Police Service will have to trim more than $6 million in budget increases it had anticipated in 2011. Watson says that is the new fiscal reality at city hall. “It’s how you look at it,” he said. “All departments will get more money to operate, they just won’t be getting as much as they asked for. Every department is going to have to live within that.” The new integrity measures Watson promised during the election, such as online posting of city councillors’ expenses and the appointment of an integrity commissioner – have been given the thumbsup by council and will be implemented in the first half of the new year, Watson
said. Council and city staff will also be working to set up a reserve fund dedicated to purchasing environmentally sensitive land – something council approved just before the holidays. Watson said he wanted to see that fund created because of the furor over building on land surrounding the Beaver Pond in Kanata. The new fund will provide money for the city to proactively purchase sensitive lands when they come up for sale. Where does the boundary lie? That will be a question for the Ontario Municipal Board in 2011 as developers go to bat to get the city to expand its urban boundary. That’s the area that defines where new construction can occur, and the developers want it widened – an idea that was popular with former mayor Larry O’Brien. Last year, city council debated expanding the urban area by 840 hectares – much of it in the city’s west end. Instead, city council chose to promote intensified development and only expand the boundary by 220 hectares – a decision that didn’t sit will with developers, who will take their cases to the OMB this spring. The result? If the boundary is expanded, it would likely put development pressures on the suburbs and rural areas. But whether or not the city expands its boundaries, intensification and infill development will remain a hot topic.

The H 73’s face top two teams over holiday Stands for Health Services BRAIN WILSON
Special to the Advance
Kemptville had to finish 2010 and start 2011 with the daunting task of facing the top two teams in the league. Thursday, Dec. 23, had the 73’s travel to the Ed Lumley Arena in Cornwall to take on the Colts. Presently, the Colts are in first place in the Robinson Division almost ten points ahead of the Brockville Braves. Kemptville struck first when Jack Nevins scored his first of the year from Lesway and Cameron just four minutes into the game. Then, Jeremy Nichols notched his first of the year from Rowbotham and Brenton on the power play. The two goal lead was short lived as Cornwall tied the game with a pair of goals within a minute and a half of each other. Before the end of the frame, the 73’s went back out in front on a power play goal by Donovan Gardiner, assisted by Nichols and Duhn. The goal was also his

first of the season. The Colts drew first blood in the second period, tying the game at three. The 73’s took the lead again on a goal by Josh Pitt, his seventh, from Brenton and Hough. Alex Brenton restored Kemptville’s two goal lead with his team leading seventeenth of the year. The goal was set up by Clark. The Colts got one back before the end of the second but the 73’s took a 5-4 lead into the second intermission. Three minutes into the third period, Cornwall was awarded a penalty shot and scored on it to tie the game again. Donovan Gardiner, with his second of the night from Plouffe and Nichols, regained the lead for the 73’s. Michael Rowbotham put Kemptville up by two with his seventh of the season. The goal was set up by Plouffe and Duhn. The Colts pulled their goalie in an effort to tie the game but they could only muster one goal with the extra attacker. The loss was Corn-
wall’s first since Nov. 10. Kemptville goalie, Keinan Brown, faced 54 shots for the 7-6 victory. Gardiner and Brenton were named the games first and third stars respectively. Twelve players picked up points in this game for the 73’s. On Jan. 2, the 73’s traveled to the Pembroke Memorial Centre, to tangle with the four time league champion Lumber Kings. Pembroke is currently in first place in the Yzerman division. After a ten day break over the holidays, Kemptville was well rested and ready for the challenge. The Lumber Kings scored twice in the first and three times in the second and added one more in the third. Alex Brenton scored Kemptville’s only goal of the game. The goal was his eighteenth of the season assisted by Michael Rowbotham. The 73’s only mustered sixteen shots in the game while Pembroke had forty on the Kemptville goalies for the 6-1 victory. In other news, the CHL has announced the details for the annual All Star game. The Bell Sensplex will play host to the Junior A All-Star Classic. This most highly-antici-
pated hockey event features the league’s best players from all 12 teams. It will be the Yzerman Division vs. Robinson Division as they battle for on-ice supremacy. The teams will be coached by league
leading Sheldon Keefe (Pembroke Lumber Kings) and Ian MacInnis (Cornwall Colts) respectively. The only member of the Kemptville 73’s selected for the game is Ben Hutton. Ben, who hails from Prescott,
is a premier defenseman in the CHL. At only 17, he was one of five CHL players selected to play for Team Canada East at the CJHL prospects game in Dauphin, Manitoba. The prospects game was created to showcase
the top 40 NHL draft eligible players in the CJHL. The 2011 CHL Junior A League All-Star Classic will take place Wednesday, January 12th, at the Bell Sensplex. Opening face off will be at 7:30 p.m.

Two of those many volunteers live right here in South Mountain. Esther Bryan is an artist and musician who came up with the idea for the Quilt of Belonging. She wanted to find a way to tell the stories of all of the people who came to Canada from other countries as well as capture the essence of the aboriginal people who were living in Canada before their world changed with the arrival of the Europeans. “In the early 1990’s, when the iron curtain came down, my father asked me to go with him back to his childhood home,” remembers Esther. “That trip was life changing,” she said. Esther realized that everyone, just like her father had stories to tell. “I saw my dad in a different light,” she explained. She put together a one-woman show of her artwork, drawings and textiles. “It was like opening a floodgate of stories,” she said. The Quilt of Belonging was the ultimate result of her revelation. The quilt took several years to complete and is made up of
a foundation row which depicts the stories of the aboriginal peoples of Canada while the remaining blocks of fabric tell the stories of all of the immigrants from all over the world who came to live in Canada. The quilt was sewn together in Williamstown. In South Mountain, Nancy Douglas and Sabina de Stecher
were first introduced to the idea of the Quilt of Belonging after Esther had given a presentation at the Canadian Club in Ottawa. “We went to Williamstown and after we saw it we wanted to be part of it,” said Nancy Douglas. The two friends, who were expert sewers, travelled down to Williamstown once each week for the next three years to help with quilt. “It drew us right into it and we wanted to do it,” she remembers. Along the way, Nan-
cy was able to also help out by interviewing people to get their stories on paper before they were added to the quilt. “I interviewed a lot of people from the First Nations,” she said adding that the experience for her was amazing. “There are some great stories there. The real story of Canada,” she said. Sabina and Nancy took on the job of telling the story of Fiji immigrants in Canada. “We met so many incredible people doing this,” she said. “Almost every day we would meet people who were from all around the world.” The Quilt of Belonging has its own story to tell. It has been all over Canada and Esther says that currently there are plans in the works to send the quilt on the road again. A companion piece to the quilt is a book written by Esther Bryan and her friends. The book contains stories and photos of the people who came together to make the 263 blocks. The book also includes nearly 800 photographs. It follows the journey of the project from its beginnings to the present. It is called Quilt of Belonging: The Invitation Project.
