The Room to Read fundraising campaign held their $10,000 cash draw during the New Year’s Day Levee at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 212. Bill McElrea, the Chair of the Room to Read Campaign says that the fundraising is going along quite well. The cash draw was a popular event for the library. Five hundred and twenty tickets went on sale in late September at $100 each. The grand prize was $10,000 and there was another ten more prizes of $1,000 each. The grand prize winner of the $10,000 ticket was Ciony Ljunger. The $1,000 winners were: Don Van Allen, Michael Goss, Scott Winch, Patricia Evans, Bev Tallman, Gordon Tallman, Pete Johnston, Don Burnside and Jennifer Li and a group from the Royal Brock in Brockville, (George, Cathy, Ursala, Cheryl, Garry, Sheila, Linda, George, Wayne and Dianne.) “We are getting closer to our goal of $750,000 thanks to the generosity of so many people,” said McElrea. “Residents and former residents have come forward with generous financial donations.” The new library is expected to be open on May 28, 2011

Collaboration and community partnerships are the focus of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Last week, the Foundation gave five community organizations, dealing with nutrition, and education a $110,000 in grant. The purpose of the grant is to enable the groups to continue in their partnership by hiring a coordinator. Three years ago, members of five different community groups, the Upper Canada Leger Centre for Education and Training, the House of Lazarus, the Dietitian Centre de Santé communautaire, the Social Development Council, and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit began to work together. They created a group called the All Things Food/Bouffe 360, SDG Community Food Network. The group met informally to come up with ideas to help residents have better access to the economic, emotional and socio-cultural benefits of having local sustainable healthy community food systems. On Wednesday Jan. 5, 2011 at the House of Lazarus in Mountain, M.P.P Jim Brownell along with Ontario Trillium Foundation representative Paulette Hébert announced that the five groups would be sharing the grant. “I come from a family of 12 children,”

She believes that if the community groups are able to get some of the traditional recipe ideas out to families it could make a difference. In a press release M. P. P. Brownell stated, “I am very pleased to see the House of Lazarus expand its support to our community and provide services through the food bank to those who require it.” He added, “Through the generosity of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, this outstanding project will offer programs for healthy living and healthy eating while promoting our local food economy.” The two-year grant will enable All Things Food/Bouffe 360 to hire a coordinator to deliver programs that are designed to promote local food economies, increase access to healthy food and encourage the preservation of traditional knowledge and skills. Patrick McGahey Broker of Record Pauline Pratt the Executive Director of the House of Lazarus said, “We are very excited to be a part of this initiative of the All things Food/Bouffe 360 committee.” She explained that the partnership should have a very real impact on how the community looks at food and nutrition from planting to eating and everything in between. North Dundas counc. John Thompson was on hand for the announcement and commented that the program would help Real Estate Ltd. Brokerage brings families together. The All Things Food/Pouffe 360 is regarded as a successful initiative. “We have been collaborating for the past three years,” said Pratt. “I think this is one of the most active and worthwhile committees.” She said. 435546-02-11

Small fire shuts down Merrickville pub

Every Christmas season, the police warn motorists of the perils of drinking and driving. This year in eastern Ontario, the message was no different. From Nov. 26 to Jan. 2, O.P.P. officers were stopping motorists 24 hours a day. Of the more than one million motorists stopped during the 2010-11 O.P.P. R.I.D.E program, a total of 294 drivers were charged with drinking and driving related infractions. That total, included those who refused to give a breath sample to police. Across Ontario, police issued 256 suspensions for criminal related drinking and driving offences. Along with these suspensions they issued 605 for blood alcohol concentrations in the “warn range”. “It is disturbing that people continue to get behind the wheel after drinking,” said Chief Superintendent Gary Coulture, Commander of the O.P.P. Eastern Region. In a press release, he stated, “Our officers removed 42 impaired drivers from the roads over the holiday season and there

were no fatal motor vehicle collisions in the region involving impaired drivers. The O.P.P. stopped a total of 167,878 cars during the holiday season in eastern Ontario. Apart from the 42 charges laid there were 75 warnings (licence suspensions) handed out and 1090 tickets were given other criminal code, highway traffic act or liquor licence offences. To the east of North Grenville in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry including the Winchester area, 7751 vehicles were checked by the O.P.P. Of that number three charges were laid, 4 driver licence suspensions were given out and another 66 related charges were made. In a press release, O.P.P. Inspector Mike McDonell said, “I’m very disappointed with the number of motorists who choose to drive after consuming alcohol, not only during the campaign but overall in 2010.” He added, “I can assure you that all efforts will be made in 2011 to curb unacceptable driving habits on our roads by strict enforcement and education of drinking and driving, speeding, use of seatbelts and distracted driving.”

A small electrical fire in the laundry room of the Goose and Gridiron has shut down the popular dining destination in the Village of Merrickville. The fire started with a heater in the restaurant. The Goose and Gridiron has earned its place in the area as an old-fashioned style English pub. While no one was injured in the fire, there was extensive smoke and water damage. “There is still some smell and we will have to replace the carpets,” said owner Tracey Sine. The Merrickville fire department responded to the fire on Dec. 15. It did not take very long for firefighters to control and extinguish the small blaze. Sine said that residents, customers, and the Merrickville Chamber of Commerce in the village, have been very supportive. “I appreciate everyone’s support,” she said. The employees at the pub located at 317 St. Lawrence Street have not been forgotten. “There will be a benefit dance for my employees,” said Sine. Sine says that while her pub is closed for repairs she will take advantage of the closure to work on other parts of the pub. Sine said that if all goes well, the Goose and Gridiron would be re-opening in mid February.

OPINION

Running through time with a runny nose Here we are, eleven years in to the new millennium. We have electronic books in our libraries, cars that can almost talk back to us and all of those neat gizmos us older folks used to marvel at on Star Trek. They all appear to be more real than fantasy. Industry has managed to make little critters that can eat oil slicks and medicine is surging ahead with one major wonder after another. The only issue that seems to defy any and all attempts to get control, of is the cold. It is that time of year for the sniffles and if you have not had a taste of this year’s version of the cold then you are in store for a special treat. The 2011 cold seems to have personality problems. It wants to be a nose running

,sneezing and seizing up cold, but at the same time it yearns to be a flu. So, as result, the illness fluctuates between cold like symptoms and flu symptoms. There is no particular order or timing in the switching back and forth. The high you have to endure from the fever that comes along while flu symptoms just makes the illness all the more bizarre. Could the common everyday cold be not unlike the climate change dilemma we do not hear about all that much anymore Perhaps we are the ones who are changing and all of those microbes are having a fun time fitting themselves into our latest biological manifestation. Someone once speculated that one of the many reasons for the fall of the Roman Em-

pire was measles. Apparently, according to the theory, the Roman Empire was savaged by the good old fashioned measles and as a result, their stellar and courageous army lost too many of their rank and file members. As a result, the fellows at the top decided that they would employ mercenaries and that was the beginning of the end. You cannot buy the kind of loyalty the Roman Empire needed to sustain itself. This year’s version of the cold is not going to end civilization as we think we know it. But for anyone over 50 their memory of colds past may not jib with what they are experiencing today. The only unchanging aspect of the cold is the never ending search for an easy fix.

COLUMN

The penny drops, and who can really be sorry Serious consideration is being given to eliminating the Canadian penny. In the early reaction to a Senate committee’s recommendation to this effect, the usual alarm has been expressed but most people seem relieved not to have to deal with the worthless little things any more. That’s a realistic way of looking at it. The year 2011 might be the first one without pennies, and what does it matter? We have long since passed the day when nostalgia about the penny was in any way justified. Sure, your parents or grandparents might be able to tell you about actually purchasing something with a penny —usually one solitary piece of a type of candy found in a barrel — but you stopped paying attention long ago. Maybe when you weren’t paying attention to your father’s penny story, you were thinking about telling your own children about the days when you could buy something with a nickel. Or a dime. When were those days, anyway? What would we be losing if the penny disappears? A little brown coin that doesn’t buy anything. It has a picture of the Queen on one side and a picture of a maple leaf on the other side. Nice, and quite Canadian. but there

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town is no shortage of pictures of the Queen or maple leaves. In the old days, kids could gamble with pennies, tossing them to see who could land one closest to the wall. That was fun, and we could do that again, except what would we win? Right: more pennies. Until a few years ago, we could save up those pennies and put them into children’s UNICEF boxes on Halloween night, but that laudable practice was eliminated, apparently for administrative reasons. Even UNICEF found the pennies more trouble than they were worth. Face it: these days, the penny is something that gathers dust on your dresser while you try to remember to roll it up and take it to the bank or throw it into one of those supermarket machines in order to trade it in for real money.

Leaving us with the penny, an annoyance for consumers, an inconvenience for merchants, an idea whose time has come and went. Of course, when change is coming vigilance is called for, especially when it’s the change that is changing. So there will be no shortage of watchdogs on the alert for stores and manufacturers rounding up instead of down, when they can no longer charge $2.98 and must choose between $2.95 and $3.00. Most of us will take it in stride, especially men, whose stride will improve with fewer coins in their pockets. For a better stride, an extra two cents now and then seems a small price to pay. Mind you, some of the strategic challenges of shopping will disappear. Not mentioning any names, but I know of a guy who always carried three pennies among his coins when he visited the stores, the object being to get rid of those three pennies. If something cost $1.83, he would offer the three pennies. If it was $1.81, he would offer two. The theory was that in this way, he would gradually eliminate his weighty stash of pennies. He could have carried four pennies, for the sake of the $1.84 purchases, but that seemed too easy, less sporting. Carrying only three pennies added a

thrilling element of uncertainty to the outing. It was a brilliant strategy, and not even remotely successful. The pennies continued to pile up on the dresser, even as the guy caused holdup after holdup in supermarket lines trying to locate one, two, or three, but not four when he needed them. The people in those lineups, not to mention the cashiers, will be delighted to see the penny go. Meanwhile, the guy is noticing that the nickels and dimes are starting to pile up on the dresser.

Osgoode trail has something for everyone it wasn’t manufactured in our ward! As for your Osgoode Residential Association, I believe your member numbers are beginning to decline. If you polled your 500 members again, I’m sure that the ones who signed the petition back in the spring and summer would change their mind now, because now they’re much more educated on what your association is really after…no motors…period. Judging by the 20-25 people who attended the first town hall meeting in the spring in Osgoode, compared to the near 300 in the fall town hall meeting, I guess its safe to say a major momentum shift is in favour of total multi use trail, something everyone can use, like trails in most parts of Ontario. You stated Mr. Thompson was out of touch, I and several others disagree with you. It seems Mr. Thompson is in touch, just so happens it’s with the majority. T. Doyle Scanlon Drive Resident

Where does your food come from? It is extremely disappointing that Canadian consumers wanting to support local food are not always served well by Canadian food labels. The members of the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario are very disappointed that the labelling practices of Canadian food processors and retailers don’t always clearly identify where the food was grown and processed. But there are some bright spots. Our fresh fruits and vegetables have excellent mandatory labelling rules that provide Canadians with informed choices when making their purchasing decisions. We

believe that consumers should have that same knowledge for all of their food purchasing decisions. If you care about where your food comes from, you need to ask yourself if current labelling practices really give you enough information about where your food comes from. If you find the answer as dissatisfying as we do, you need to talk to your MP Henry Stevens, President Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario

Re: Letter from December 30, 2010 entitled; “Pathway critic” I would suggest Mr. Pierre Lalonde get his facts and figures accurate before having them printed in our local papers. Once again, this truly is another exaggerated story from a member of the Osgoode Residential Association. He claims he knows everything about fumes and noise on the pathway but Mr. Lalonde himself doesn’t even live near the path, I live on the pathway, along with others and you are exaggerating once again. As for the economic impact that the snowmobile club has on our ward, I suggest you go door to door to local insurance companies, dealers of both ATV and snowmobiles, various gas stations and all the restaurants and pubs that benefit from these recreational activities. Let’s just find out how much business is generated from our snowmobile clubs. They are all part of our ward, the entire ward has towns other than Osgoode. Do you own a car Mr. Lalonde? Harbingers of good luck for a new year I think 2011 is going to be especially lucky for us at the Fisher farm, because we began the year with the birth of the first of the new lambs. That has got to be a good omen. He is a big, strong single, and his mother has more than enough milk for him. On January 2, twins were born, Eenie and Meenie. They are much smaller but they have good rooting instincts and their mother is calm and steady. That should be the last of the new lambs until the spring. Unless Rambi caught

Kemptville Advance - JANUARY 13, 2011

As the owners of Boyce’s, the couple and their staff had made plans to hold a free Christmas Day dinner for all of those in the area who did not have family to spend Christmas Day with. To many, Christmas can be a time of sadness and the season can bring out the notion of loneliness that only family and friends can take away. As the special day rolled around Cheryl and Lawrence experienced their own moment of loss and need. On Wednesday evening Dec. 16, around 6:30 p.m. the couple were confronted with a house fire that not only destroyed their home and possessions but their pets and barn. “The fire raged for an hour before it jumped to the barn,” remembers Cheryl. She remembers the Kemptville firefighters getting the animals out of the barn just in time. Unfortunately, their house pets were not so lucky. Cheryl ended up with burns on her face and arm as she tried to get her pets out. Lawrence had to jump through a curtain of fire just to get out of the house.

Absent are the rest of the volunteers who helped the Wyatts out on Christmas Day. Despite their loss, the two had to make a decision about what they were going to do. They had to find a place to stay as well as start replacing some of their personal possessions. They also had to come up with a plan to follow through on their promise to hold that Christmas Day dinner. “It was the band aid we needed, “remembers Cheryl. “It gave us something else to think about.” Cheryl said that all of the people who came to the dinner helped them get through their day. They were staying at the Clothier Inn courtesy of the Red Cross. Their friends started

to rally round and they found a place to call home for a few months on a temporary basis. Their animals were being looked after and for a moment life returned to normal. Their staff volunteered to help and as soon as word of the devastating fire was out, their staff had a donation jar on the counter. Dave Scobie and Barb Jackson, who work at the restaurant, want to provide even more help. Lawrence and Cheryl lost everything in the fire and their insurance will not be able to help them rebuild. “I would like to finds a way to hold a benefit dance to get dona-

tions towards a building fund,” said Barb. Their friends want to help them get back on their feet. Cheryl said that the North Grenville community has been helping them all along. Whether it was helping them find a place to stay or help with replacing clothing and the basic necessities of life the Christmas spirit the couple offered their community on Christmas Day is being returned by their friends. “Our customers have become like our family,” said Cheryl. “We played music all afternoon on Christmas Day, and ate turkey, ham and lamb with all of the fixings.” Cheryl and Lawrence still have to find away to rebuild their home. They have had some help from Walmart regarding Lawrence’s medication that he needs. They had help from Harold Wilson when they needed work on their truck. The Salvation Army was there to help them. Rebecca Dukes, one of the librarians at the North Grenville Public Library, was one of the first to help them out.

A Merrickville school is nurturing children’s love for languages. On every Saturday morning, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School plays host to the Merrickville International Languages Program (MILP), where children can attend free Chinese language classes. “A lot of these kids are very excited,” said Janice Ling, MILP instructor. “It gives them terrific skills.” Ling said the program is part of an initiative by the continuing education program of the Eastern Ontario French Catholic Board of Education, to offer language classes in rural areas. “I like learning how to speak Chinese,” said 11-year-old Michaela Burley. The program is currently in its second year, and enrolment is slowly growing. Ling said she hopes to have a second class for children in the near future. She has been teaching courses since 1987. “It’s pretty addictive,” she said. In addition to learning the language, children also participate in a variety of learning activities including paper folding, ink painting, singing, cooking and learning about Chinese culture and history.

ADULT CLASSES COMING IN FEBRUARY The MILP will teach Chinese language classes for adults in February. Ling said she is excited about the additional opportunities the course will offer current residents, as well as potentially attract more families to the community. “It’s really good for people in business, or that want to travel,” she said. “If we offer these things, maybe we can attract more people from the cities.” The adult classes, ages 16 and older, are $100 per semester. They will take place every Saturday at the St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. For registration forms and information, contact Ling at 613293-9504 or 613-326-0630 or email: chinese4fun@hotmail.ca

FIRE from the front

The commander said that firefighters from Merrickville, Spencerville, Kemptville, North Gower and Osgoode were at the blaze, with pumper trucks from area fire stations helping out. Two women from Ottawa were travelling south on Highway 416 when they spotted the smoke. “The amount of black smoke up in the air told me that there was a big fire,” said Brenda Belair. Her and her friend, Pauline Doupe who had originally moved from the South Stormont and Brinston area to Ottawa,

pulled off the 416 to see what was going on. They found the home just as the first of the firefighters arrived. The family at the home is on holiday and there were no injuries. Neighbours said the home belonged to Mike and Heather Tzakis. Watching the firefighters work in the freezing morning air, neighbors said that the large burning home, a bungalow, was the second one built in the subdivision. Captain Bond said that the cause of the fire was under investigation. The house was totally destroyed.

Building code violations close Olde Mill Guest Home JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com

The Olde Mill Guest Home in Oxford Mills has been temporarily shut down due to concerns about the safety of residents. The home has been operating in Oxford Mills for years. Its clients are patients with various degrees of intellectual impairment and mental illness. Three days before Christmas, the North Grenville municipality along with the fire marshal’s office ordered the homes owner Frank Gordon, to find a new place for the 17 residents to stay. The decision came as a surprise to many as the home had not

reported any issues in the past. Forbes Symon, the director of planning and development for North Grenville said that the situation began after a resident died. The fire department had responded to the death and once at the home, noticed that there were a few building code issues. “There was immediate cause for concern about the building and fire codes,” remembers Symon. The O.P.P. were investigating. The municipality became involved when the fire prevention people went through the building. The timing of the closure could not have been worse but the situation was too dangerous to

wait on. “Whatever was found was disturbing regarding the safety of the residents,” said Symon. He added that he did not feel that the municipality had very much flexibility in making the decision. “I would have been more concerned if we had done nothing,” he said. The municipality is not releasing a detailed description of the work that needs to be done but Symon admitted that there were four pages of deficiencies and that they range from slight to major. The residents of the home were sent to Kingston, Ottawa and Brockville. The owner of the home could not be reached.

LCBO MAKES POINT WITH STUDENT’S DRAWINGS. J. Morin Photo/Advance Staff

Grade 7 students at St. Michael High School took on an interesting and unique project before Christmas and New Years. They made cautionary drawings about the perils of drinking and driving and asked the local LCBO if they could attach them to their shopping bags. Last week as customers came to the Kemptville LCBO they received these colourful bags with an all important message about drinking and driving. In this photo LCBO employee, Colleen Lamoureux shares a laugh with customer David Kerr as he holds up one of the bags. The O.P.P. have said that while drinking and driving charges are still being handed out all year long, the message of drinking responsably has to be sent out all the time. This holiday season there were no drinking and driving fatalities in North Grenville.

North Grenville Concert Choir and Divertimento Orchestra present Handel’s Messiah The North Grenville Concert Choir has created in North Grenville their very own wonderful Christmas tradition. On the evening of Sunday, Dec. 12, St. James Anglican Church in Kemptville was the site of an exciting presentation of Handel’s Messiah. This was the twelfth annual concert of Christmas music by the choir and conductor Jim Watson. Watson has decided to retire after this concert, in order to spend more time with his wife Nancy and do some travelling. He made this performance special. Choir member Maureen Heuff made a heartfelt presentation to Jim Watson, during the performance, wishing him well in his retirement. The Divertimento Orchestra

from Ottawa, under Conductor Gordon Slater, has been working with the NGCC since 1996. The orchestra has collaborated with the choir for many of its Messiah concerts and four Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. The Divertimento Orchestra, with its strings, woodwinds and tympanis, added a dimension seldom heard in Kemptville. While they have a total of over 60 members, Divertimento brought 19 musicians to balance the 44 choir members for this Christmas performance. This combination is enough to fill St. James church with a very rich sound. Traditionally the choir chooses a soloist from its members for certain parts of the concert. This year there were no auditions for the solo roles and the choir was able to enlist the voices of three soloists from the Ottawa area and one from the

All four visitors are experienced classical soloists and they provided very high quality interpretations of Handel’s work. This combination of the NGCC and Divertimento Orchestra has developed a reputation for getting better and better and the concert provided very good evidence of this wonderful relationship. Messiah was written by George Frideric Handel in the summer of 1741 and had its first airing in Dublin Ireland on April 13, 1741. The musical piece was repeatedly revised by Handel and the most familiar version was performed in 1798 for a benefit for the Foundling Hospital.

The 73’s were hoping that this weekend’s games would provide them with the jump they needed in the standings for a better playoff position. The Canadians entered the weekend just nine points ahead of the 73’s. Carleton Place scored the first goal just under four minutes into the game. But Michael Rowbotham, with his eighth of the year, from Duhn and Clark, tied the game three and half minutes later. The second period saw the Canadians come out flying, scoring the go ahead goal just a minute and a half into the frame. They maintained a complete dominance in the play for the entire period putting

a total of twenty five shots on the Kemptville goal. The period ended 2-1 in favour of Carleton Place. It was more of the same in the third with the Canadians scoring twice. The game ended with a 4-1 victory for Carleton Place. Kemptville goaltender, Keinan Brown, was named the games first star after facing the 49 shot onslaught. The following evening, Kemptville travelled to Carleton Place for the return match. The Canadians drew first blood again as they scored thirty three seconds from the opening face-off. But the 73’s were determined and fought back with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Scoring for Kemptville were Michael Rowbotham (Lesway & Cameron), Jake Clark (Jackson & Rowbotham) and Nick Duhn 443207

(Rowbotham & Plouffe). The Canadians came out flying in the second again and scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead into the break. In the third, the teams exchanged goals with Josh Pitt notching his eighth of the season from Hough and Plouffe. Carleton Place hung on for the 64 victory. The Canadians again directed 42 shots at goaltender Keinan Brown. Michael Rowbotham was named the games’ third star. Earlier in the week, 73’s goaltender Ben Curley, received an honorable mention as the CHL Tier 1 “Goalie of the Month”. Later in the week he was traded to the Gloucester Rangers for goalie Jordan Giguere. Ben, from Dunrobin, joined the 73’s as an affiliated player in the 2007/08 season and has been between the pipes since then. Jordan comes from Mont Saint Hi-

laire, Quebec. As well as the CHL All Star game being played Wednesday Jan. 12 at the Bell Sensplex, the CHL Prospects game will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Bob Hartley Arena in Hawkesbury. Playing in the game for the Robinson Division team will be several members of the 73’s. Representing Kemptville will be forwards Keegan Rowe and Brandon Lesway, defenceman, Donovan Gardiner and goaltender, Keinan Brown. Kemptville’s next action will be Friday night, Jan. 14 when the Ottawa Junior Senators come to town. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. Then on Sunday, Jan 16, the Hawkesbury Hawks will visit North Grenville. Game time is 2 p.m. Catch Junior Hockey Excitement.

LEESON, LARRY (September 4, 1941 – January 14, 2008)

CL22910

If you were here, you would be saying, “where the heck is the snow?” And when the snow fell, you would be out in the garage, filling it with fumes from your Yahama. You were always ready to get out there and enjoy life in the great outdoors. Every time we see someone on a snowmobile, we think of you. If you were here, you would be celebrating the season with family and friends, making sure they knew how much you cared. If you were here, we would be laughing at your jokes. You would be playing bartender, holding court in the kitchen, the life of every party. If you were here, you would be teasing your grandchildren as your eyes filled up with tears of pride. If you were here, we would pick up right where we left off. Thanking you for your example on how to live life to the fullest. If you were here. Oh how we wish you were here. From your loving family.

Time changes many things but love & memory ever clings. A booklet of commemorative verses is available for viewing at our office to help you get through this difficult time.
