What a difference 10 years can make – an example of that is the progress that has been made by Ryan Hreljac of Kemptville, the founder of the Ryan’s Well Foundation. This year marks 10 years that the foundation has been in existence, but it was earlier than that when Hreljac decided to do something about water. In 1998, just a young Grade 1 student, he had a plan to help deliver water to those who didn’t have clean, safe drinking water. With the support of friends, family and the community, Hreljac raised enough money to build a well in Africa. In 1999, at age seven, the first well was built at Angolo Primary School in northern Uganda. To this day, the well continues to serve the community. “Looking back, it first started in his basement and he used to joke that the family dog was his secretary,” said Erica Bruce, communications coordinator for the J. Morin Photos/Advance Staff foundation. Bruce said that to celebrate the 10-year anniversary, they were going to be spreading good news stories about the foundation and the work that has been done. “Ryan has been doing talks around the world about the foundation and the work we do here,” Bruce said. “In 2008 and 2009, Ryan, ambassadors and staff made approximately 100 appearances throughout Canada, the Middle East and Asia. He says he wants to continue to do that and he’s able to keep a hand in the work even though he’s in school full time in Halifax at the University of Kings College.” He is enrolled in the Foundation Year Programme - an integrated, core text program available to first-year students. “Currently we have projects going in three areas,” Bruce said. “Haiti, West and East Fricas… there are many going on in Uganda week

as that’s where the first well was built and we have strong project partners there.” Bruce said this year will there will be speaking events where staff – now consisting of two full-time and five part-time members – along with the many volunteers and supporters will be telling stories of their successes over the years. “We will have a photo show and talk about what the foundation has accomplished,” she said. Bruce started at the foundation as a volunteer and is now one of the part time staff members. She says she is amazed by Hreljac and his energy the way he speaks at engagements. “I was just so amazed at the impact Ryan has had and continues to have,” she said. “His story continues to make an impact around the world.”

The students and staff at the North Grenville District High School said goodbye to one of their long-time teachers on Wednesday. Feb. 10. After 31 years teaching at the high school, Marjorie MacQuarrie-Derickx shared the spotlight with an early morning United Way pancake breakfast as she formally retired from her teaching post. The teaching job at the high school was her first job as a teacher and clearly, it agreed with her. Thirty-one years later, she has a lifetime of great memories to draw on. The United Way is one of her favourite charities. The entire student body assembled for her retirement ceremony. The teacher along with her husband Frank and her mother Eleanor, who is also a former teacher, listened as friends, staff, teachers and students thanked her and said goodbye. The school music club sang songs from the 1980’s as a tribute to when she began her teaching career. On the gymnasium stage a screen showed a slide show of staff and students and MacQuarrie-Derickx. The show included testimonials from students and staff about their retiring teacher. At the end of the show was the message “Have fun and Thank You.” During the breakfast, friends and colleagues hugged her and congratulated her on her retirement. “I am very humbled by all of your words and your deeds,” she said. “Now you can see why I loved my time here. Everyone is so supportive.” Standing in the school’s gymnasium and addressing the entire school staff and student body she said, “I have made life-long friendships here.” She thanked her husband for making her breakfast each day of those 31 years and explained how her mother had taught her what a good teacher should be like. Along the way, she raised a daughter and forged a career in teaching. “You have made me proud,” said MacQuarrie-Derickx referring to her students at the school and their achievements over the years. Her advice to young students was, “Set the dream and take action to make it happen,” she said. Her husband commented, “Without a doubt, she gave 110 per cent every day,” he suspects that she is not aware of the positive influence she has had on all of her students over the years. Retirement can be daunting for some but MacQuarrie-Derickx is ready. She says she is prepared for the next chapter in her life. “I am ready to take the next step,”

she said. One of her many friends, who has taught alongside her at the school for all those years, is former teacher Denise Jones. Jones told a few stories of Marjorie early days and pointed out that despite her habit of helping others, Marjorie would stay in the background. “She is a leader,” said Jones adding, “It is an honour to have known you.” Jones spoke of the respect that Marjorie had for her colleagues and students. “Share a boatload of respect for your colleagues,” said Jones, “you will have a friend for life.” She began her career in 1980 teaching English and that same year married her high school sweetheart, Frank. She then quickly moved on to her specialties, geography and history. Fundraising for charity was a priority for Marjorie. She was involved in many of the fundraising projects in the school and set an example for students to follow. She was also one of two teacher advisors on the school council.

Giving is a community trait A few minutes watching the news can really bring you down. There is, as usual, strife everywhere. Political intrigue, intellectual cramps and social unease blast out of the television set and into our living rooms. For those of us who are more comfortable receiving their news of the day through different mediums, the result will be much the same. The suggestion that the planet is going to hell in a hand basket is an appropriate expression for many and they wear it on there faces as they go about their business. However, we are missing part of the story. In all fairness to the rest of the world, we Canadians do not have all the same opportunities for political and social unrest here and definitely not in this part of Ontario. What we do have, thanks to a stable economy and more or less democratic rule, is the chance to have the kind of life many can only dream of. In Metcalfe, a group of people have their heads shaved for the Children’s Wish Foundation. Along the walls of the Lion’s Den on the Metcalfe fairgrounds are posters telling the stories of children who have been helped over the years by the head shaving fundraising events. In Kemptville, the youth centre shows young

people how to enhance their thinking skills and the Holy Cross Council Knights of Columbus get ready for their annual Sweetheart Brunch just before Valentines Day. The Ryan’s Well Foundation celebrates its tenth birthday and an entire school body says goodbye to one of their retiring teachers with a pancake breakfast for the United Way. There are plenty of good things happening here. In direct contrast, the debate rages on in government about how expensive our internet usage may be, people in Egypt struggle to redefine themselves and Australians hold on to their hats as historically devastating weather bears down on them. We have it easy compared to many others. A sociologist could wonder why we are able to give so much to so many in our communities and never stumble across the simple truth. People anywhere in any land, when left alone to prosper in a healthy way will give what they can to each other whenever giving is necessary. That way of thinking seems to be the default position for the human race. One has to wonder why global leadership cannot figure that out.

Wayne Gretzky is 50 and how old do you feel?

The signposts of ageing are many and they get more comical as you go along. You remember becoming a teenager, bidding farewell to all that childish behaviour, and welcoming new varieties of even more childish behaviour. You remember being old enough to drink legally, old enough to leave home for work or university, an adult. This is perhaps the first feeling of being old. Then your baby sister goes off to university. Then you become one of those older people you used to smirk at as a teenager — a married person, with a mortgage and a job, who stays in on weeknights. Where does the time go? you ask. But the process has barely begun. You have children of your own and that’s around the same time that you notice that the police officers are no longer older than you. The children become teenagers and you begin sounding like your parents. I’m old, you think. And it’s all downhill from there. Soon, you are older than the police officers, older than the minister at the church, older than the dentist. Your children grow up, turn 30. You become a grandparent. You take naps. Surely it can’t get older than this. But it can. Last week you open up the newspaper and it says Wayne Gretzky

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town has turned 50. So there you are. You, as a grown-up, watched Gretzky as a kid. Now Gretzky feels old. How does that make you feel? Perhaps it is not as shocking to you as all that. In this Facebook era, people are reconnecting with old friends, going to high school reunions, where they are surrounded by old people. Somehow they sense that they are not kids any more. Any neither is Wayne Gretzky. He is older than the sportswriters now, older than his dentist. But there is a reassuring point in all this. Wayne Gretzky is 50 but he is not irrelevant. Almost all of the dozens of records he set still stand. Someone broke one the other day but it was an obscure thing — most career overtime goals, or something like that. For the rest of it, he

is still the guy. But so are you, when you think about it. Your old records still stand. Sure, they are different kinds of records. But no one flips pancakes the way you do, or finds a parking space, or empties the dishwasher. You can climb ladders like nobody’s business and you never run out of windshield washer fluid. Just because Gretzky is 50 doesn’t mean he’s finished either. He can look forward to future accomplishments, such as the kind of stuff you’ve been doing. You hold the record for reading the most consecutive Dr. Seuss stories aloud. You could be the best at remembering the names of bit players in western movies. You can identify any car made in the last 50 years. You scored six goals goals that time, when you were older than Gretzky, at the neighbourhood rink. You saved a cat. No one tells a joke like you do. And you just get better the older you are. You can make a soufflé. You can play Beatles songs on the recorder. You can watch four games on TV simultaneously. You can figure out what’s wrong with the computer. The Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health and the Sens Foundation are teaming up to show that youth mental health is not a solo mission. Led by the inaugural Do It For Daron – Purple Pledge Day on Feb. 8, the pair are encouraging the community to “harness energy and action to help move youth from feeling sad to feeling empowered.” Schools, hockey teams and youth groups interested in participating in the initiative were asked to wear purple in support of the Royal Ottawa’s Early Identification and Intervention Program for Youth. Money for the Do It For Daron fundraiser must be received by the Royal Ottawa by Feb. 18 and everyone participating will receive a pair of tickets to the Ottawa Senators skills game on Feb. 21. The group that donates the most money

will earn four tickets to the Ottawa Senators game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Feb. 26. The Do It For Daron fundraiser was created in memory of Daron Richardson – a Grade 9 student at Ashbury College and a member of the Ottawa Senators AA bantam hockey team. Daron, daughter of Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson, died in hospital on Nov. 13 after complications from a suicide attempt the previous day. Instead of keeping Daron’s death private, the Richardson family decided to raise awareness of teen suicide and depression in hopes of preventing further tragedies like this from occurring. The secret to that perfect relationship, life-long mate and kindred spirit is more elusive than the fountain of youth. Every year, on Valentine’s Day, couples celebrate a perfect pairing or at least the potential for one. George and Norma Fisher are a Kemptville couple who have used the secret of their unique relationship to travel on a path that has taken them on a 60-year journey. Married in 1951, the couple have lived and loved their way through good times and bad, raising a family and pursuing careers. Along the way, they never lost sight of why they married and why they are so happy together. The couple have two children Bob and Ann. George is closing in on his 94th birthday. Norma is moving up to her 90th. Their romance was not all that assured when they first met back in Ormstown, Quebec in the late 1940’s. George was training to be a veterinarian and had spent two years in the area. Norma, a teacher at the time, in far away Montreal, came from a family farm. Norma had four brothers. She can remember the youngest one telling her, when she came back for the summer from teaching in Montreal, about the new veterinarian’ in town, “I was not very interested,” she laughingly recalls. George, went into the navy.

He was originally from Sackville New Brunswick but most of his training had been around Ormsville. “We went to the same dances,” explained Norma , “but we never met each other.” The first real time they took notice of one another was at a friend’s wedding. George wanted to be the one to be with Norma but Norma was already committed to take the newly married couple to the train. “She stood me up,” said George. That same summer, the two started dating but George was keeping his plans to himself. “I could not tell if he was serious,” remembers Norma. Eventually George invited Norma, who was back at work, to come with him to a veterinary convention in Montreal. “I had two dates lined up for that weekend,” said Norma,

they were always able to find the middle ground. In 1969, George and Norma came to Kemptville, after spending 10 years in Prince Edward Island and eight years in Peterborough. In Kemptville, George worked at the Kemptville Campus heading up the veterinary diagnostic laboratory for eastern Ontario. He retired from that position in 1982 after 29 years at the college. The couple say they could never leave Kemptville. Their grandchildren and great grand children are close by. They both feel Kemptville is the best place in the country to be living in. Norma described the Kemptville community as a very kind and generous one. This June, George and Norma will be celebrating 60 years together. “We really have a wonderful marriage,” said Norma.

They were married in June 1951. “On our wedding day it was raining,” said Norma, “As we came out of the church the sun was shining and it has been shining ever since.” The secret to their successful marriage has a great deal to do with their personal values about themselves and those around them. “I am a firm believer that there is never a need for two people to lose respect for each other,” George said. “We would not always agree on everything but we would always find a way to work things out,” added Norma. They both agreed that there were times when they were far apart on different issues but after thinking over how they felt, and the information they had,

Members of the Kemptville Christian Reformed Church are heading to Peru on an outreach mission to bring disaster relief for those who lost sand brick homes and watched as their streets were ravaged by torrential rains. Cora Beking says the Service In Learning Mission to Peru is a chance for youth in the congregation to get a look outside their own areas and help those living in poverty in third world countries. “There are 10 of us going this year, and we will stay 10 to 12 days,” she said. “Some of the youths haven’t even been on a

plane before.” They range in age from 15 to 18: three of the 10 people going are adults. Participants include: Victoria DeSchiffart, Madison DePater, Amelia Wickwire, Brandon Te Grotenhuis, Bradley Noort, Fayth Ponsen, Alex Haner, Kris Beking, Pastor Ben Ponsen and Beking and her husband John. They each need $2,000, and that includes airfare, transportation, food and lodging. The church members have been holding fundraisers to offset the costs, like the one on Feb. 12 – a Valentine’s breakfast from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Cost is $15 a couple or $8 per person. There will be a bake

sale going on the same day with door prizes and fun and fellowship. The group will spend March Break doing disaster relief in Lucre, just outside of Cusco, Peru. “Teaching vacation bible school and leading sessions with the youth and leaders and local farmers in the area will also be on the itinerary,” said Beking. This is their second trip back as they continue to build relationships with the local people and leaders, Beking added. “Missions to Peru will be a life changing experience,” said Beking. The members will take with them, bible school supplies for 200 children as

LJ MATHESON Organizers of the 13th annual Sweetheart Brunch planned for Sunday, Feb. 13 are looking to feed the masses this weekend as more than 1,000 people are expected to enjoy an all-you-can eat delight. The brunch runs from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Holy Cross Council 5333 Knights of Columbus, along with countless volunteers, local businesses and generous sponsors, are busy creating an unlimited feast that is sure to tempt even the most finicky eater. “Sausages, ham, eggs, toast, fruit, juice, coffee, tea… it’s unlimited and we usually fill the house,” said Matt Felker, of O’Farrell Financial Services. He is also one of the volunteers. “It’s a great community event. It brings out people of all ages for some great food, entertainment and it raises money for local charities,” said Jenny Thibert, also of the financial services company. “It’s $10

Ottawa, January 24, 2011 My first ski instructor was Fernand Bonnevie. I saw him at Christmas. He is 96. He doesn’t ski anymore. Even walking is too difficult. He gets 24-7 care from a live-in caregiver (his wife died years ago), children and grandchildren. Not in a hospital or long-term care setting, but from his old house in the alpine village of Val d’Isère. Does it complicate things? To an extent, yes. He doesn’t benefit from doctors conducting complex procedures to make it easier for him to walk. Would he prefer a long-term care space? Not a chance. From his house, he uses binoculars to spy on an Alpine Ibex who is also struggling with old age. He worries about the Ibex, but cherishes his ability to relate to the world outside. Between advanced but invasive care and quality of life, Fernand chooses quality of life, surrounded by the nature and people he loves.

The choice raises important questions for all health providers who care for the elderly. Are acute care hospitals a good setting for people like Fernand? Is there a better way? A consensus is emerging between hospitals, community healthcare providers, caregivers and care coordinators such as the Community Care Access Network: once they have treated seniors, acute care hospitals are not well suited to providing them the comfort, dignity and quality of life they should expect. Home, where patients can enjoy the independence from which so much of their dignity derives, along with the company of loved ones, is better. That is why our social workers – along with our leadership and a host of other health professionals – are working with the Community Care Access Network, the Local Health Integration network and other partners in health to implement Home First. Home First is a new approach to care that immediately starts the discussion, upon admission to hospital, about the best place and options available to patients and families after discharge. The approach puts every stakeholder in the system on the same page, seeking ways to reintegrate elderly patients into the community as promptly, compassionately and safely as possible. Seven-year-old Victoria Wilson has been reunited with the flight paramedics that helped save her life. Three Ornge paramedics airlifted Wilson by helicopter to CHEO following a playground accident last fall in North Gower. Wilson was playing in the schoolyard last October, when she knocked heads with another child, bouncing back and crashing into a jungle gym. What seemed like a normal playground accident was diagnosed as a concussion in the emergency room; after being examined by doctors. By the next morning, Wilson was complaining of a headache which prompted her parents to call 911, and the local EMS team determined that Wilson’s playground accident had resulted in a serious injury. With her heart rate slowing and her actions becoming unresponsive, the parents decided to call Ornge to have her airlifted as time was running out. “It is very hard to put it into words how we were feeling, especially when it is your child and

the dire situation she was in. Starting to come to terms with it, was a very hard thing to accept,” said Wilson’s father Roger. “It is good to be able to meet the people that helped save my daughter. Auger said. Ornge paramedics Marcie Beaudoin, Patrick Auger, and paediatric paramedic John Holbrook flew Wilson to CHEO, where she underwent emergency brain surgery to remove a 4-inch blood clot that was causing her to suffer mini-strokes.

The Kemptville Youth Centre was the perfect location for a gathering of area youth centre members learning how to pass on great thinking and communication skills. Dale Pearson, a program coordinator from Town Youth Participation Strategies, (TYPS) was in Kemptville on Thursday. Feb. 3 for the day. She was teaching more than 30 young people the art of decision making, communication and problem

solving. “The program is an activity based youth engagement program,” explained Pearson. Youth from Kemptville, Almonte, Smiths Falls and Osgoode and Arnprior were selected to take part in the program. When the training is complete, the individuals from each area will be facilitators who will bring their experience back to their respective youth centres The day-long course is designed to get members to participate and become engaged in the program. “We are developing a manual with 150 or so

from TYPS as well as their own home-grown programs. Stacey Tenbult, the Kemptville Youth Centre’s executive director is one of the facilitators along with Andrew McLean and Darren Isaacs. “There is no pass or fail here,” said Pearson. “The idea is for youth to participate and become engaged.”

Learning how to think efficiently and effectively, solve problems and major decisions are crucial skills to have. “Zack Findlay is a member of the Kemptville Youth Centre. “You make decisions every day of your life,” he said, “It is not just a matter of thinking…it is a matter of doing.”

The Senators forward has produced three goals and eight points in a seven-game stretch heading into the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current road trip, making him one of Ottawaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hottest players offensively coming out of the National Hockey League all-star break. But the 23-year-old Buffalo native, who went goal-less for 24 games to start the current campaign, keeps looking at the current Eastern Conference standings and wishes his team could produce a turnaround that mirrors his own improved production. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m starting to get re-

As the NHL schedule passed its halfway mark, the Islanders again found themselves doomed to a ďŹ nish near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. As the regular season starts to wind down, the 73’s were faced with four games this week. The battle for the remaining playoff spots is heating up. First up were the Kanata Stallions on Tuesday night, Feb. 1 at the Kanata Recreation Complex. After dropping Friday’s game to the Stallions in overtime, the 73’s were hoping to get it back on this night. The Stallions scored twice in the first period, four times in the second and added two more in the third. Brent Bisdee scored four of the goals for Kanata. In the second period, Kemptville’s Brock Plouffe, with his fifteenth of the season assisted by Hutton and Lesway scored their only goal of the game. The final score was 8-1. It was a rough game with the officials calling 180 minutes in penalties. The power play opportunities were equal with each team scoring once on eleven chances. Kanata had 41 shots on the 73’s goalies. On Thursday, Feb. 3, Kemptville trav-

eled to Cornwall to take on the Colts. Cornwall is presently in first place in the Robinson Division and is ranked fifth in the country by the Canadian Junior Hockey League in conjunction with NHL Central Scouting. The Colts scored twice in the first period but the 73’s got one back before the buzzer. Cornwall took a 21 lead into the first intermission. Scoring for Kemptville was Brandon Lesway from Jackson and Cameron. The Colts added two more to their lead in the second and in the third, added two more, while Andrew Upshall got one for the 73’s. Assisting on the goal were Hough and Plouffe. Cornwall took the victory by a score of 6-2. Kemptville goaltenders faced a total of 44 shots in the game. The Central Hockey League announced its Players of the Month for January this past week. Kemptville’s Jake Clark received an honourable mention for the award. Former Kemptville goalie, Ben Curley, also received an honourable mention as Goalie of the Month. The 73’s returned to Kemptville for the other two games this week. First up, on

Friday, Feb. 4, were the Ottawa Junior Senators. Just 1:49 into the game, Alex Brenton scored his twenty-eighth goal of the season to give Kemptville a 1-0 lead. Setting up the goal were Pitt and Hutton. In the second period, Ottawa tied the game on a power play goal. The Sens took the lead at the 15:20 mark but were unable to hang on. Brock Plouffe’s sixteenth of the year from Brenton and Hough tied it at two with a little more than two minutes left. In the shoot-out, Kemptville‘s first two shooters, Brenton and Plouffe, both beat the Ottawa goalie giving the 73’s a 3-2 win. Kemptville 73’s goalie, Keinan Brown was named the game’s first star for his amazing performance, stopping 54 of the 56 shots he faced. Brock Plouffe was named the game’s second star. On Sunday, Feb. 6, the Brockville Braves visited North Grenville. Expecting a high energy challenge from the always tough Braves, the 73’s received exactly that. The Braves scored first at 7:31 of the first period and went to the intermission leading 1-0. At 2:19 of the second, Alex Brenton notched his twenty-ninth goal of the

season, assisted by Pitt and Brake, to tie the game at one. With almost two minutes left in the period, Brockville scored and restored the one goal lead going into the second intermission. Unfortunately, the Braves hit the empty net with just ten seconds left to cement the win with a score of 3-1. Kemptville goalie, Keenan Brown was again selected as first star, facing 47 shots. Travis Armstrong played a strong game for Kemptville and was rewarded with a third star selection. With nine games left in the regular season for the 73’s, there are just five points separating four teams in the standings. Two of the four teams, Kemptville, Kanata, Ottawa or Smiths Falls, will make the playoffs. Every game is important. Kemptville’s next home game is Friday, Feb. 11 when the Nepean Raiders come to town. Game time is 7:30.
