Eight administrators at the Eastern Breeders Inc. in Kemptville have been given notice that their positions have been eliminated. The job losses are the result of a company merger with Gencor of Guelph that will become a provincial $30-million powerhouse servicing its 8,583 members. The move will slash between $.5 and $1 million in annual costs and comes as a result of a 100 per cent vote in favour of joining the two operations to create a new one – East-Gen. It’s a bittersweet pill to swallow for Ann Louise Carson, the general manager of the Kemptville facility, who is one of the eight people to lose their jobs. Of the 80 people on site, that’s 10 per cent of its workforce: 50 employees are considered field positions and the other 30 are office jobs from which the eight positions will be eliminated. Carson has been at EBI for five years and has chosen not to compete for the new GM position that will become available in Guelph, where the head office will be located. “My loyalty is to the company and I still have a job until June 30,” she said in a phone interview on the heels of the announcement. “It will be my job to ensure a smooth transition.” Carson stressed that the Kemptville facility is not closing – just the administration will be shifting to the head office. SWEETHEART OF A MEAL The 13th Annual Sweetheart Brunch on Sunday, Feb. 13 was a great way to share Valentine’s Day with the whole family. The North Grenville Municipal Centre was packed as more than 1,000 people took advantage of this annual tradition. In this photo, the Dionne family enjoy a great breakfast. Plugging the leaks in water usage HOWAIDA SOROUR Special to the Advance

Don’t be alarmed if you find a couple of strangers in orange or yellow jackets with North Grenville IDs, knocking at your door asking to do an in-home inspection of your water system. They’re part of the municipality’s proactive effort to optimize the water and sewage plant’s capacity. “We’re going through unprecedented growth in North Grenville, so we have to be very aware of the available capacity in our environ-

mental infrastructure,” said Jim Beeler, chief superintendent of North Grenville Environmental Services. Staff with the help of a co-op student from the University of Guelph are going door to door, mostly by appointment right now, to conduct an in-home water inventory, give households pointers on how to conserve water and hand out free water saving kits. The kits, are paid for by a provincial water conservation grant, and are expected in the next two weeks. KITS see page 3

The prospect of a hospital without an emergency department became more rumour than fact on Friday, Feb. 11 as the Winchester District Memorial Hospital’s on-line survey deadline approached and Nepean - Carleton Lisa McLeod held a press conference outside the rural hospital. The WDMH has been consulting with area residents about what kind of services they want in their community. There had been suggestions that the

McLeod, along with Deputy PC Leader and opposition critic Christine Elliott, spoke of their concern for the fate of the emergency room services at the hospital. Lisa Little, the vice-chair of the WDMH board of directors arrived in the middle of the press conference to say that the issue of cutting back on emergency service at the hospital was remote. The hospital has been working on developing a strategic plan for the future. Part of that process has in-

He said that the LHIN is looking for ways to improve services there. Munter said, “The Champlain LHIN’s epidemiologists and planners will work with residents, health services providers and other stakeholders to develop a long-term plan for how best to distribute health services across our region, based entirely on the health needs of residents. “I can assure you that no decisions have been taken about this and in fact it is premature to assume any particular

The LHIN board of directors approved, on Jan. 26, 2011 specific strategies regarding hospital planning in the Eastern Counties. There were no suggestions of structural changes related to emergency services. The hospital has received support from the LHIN to expand its health services. The hospital will be building a healthcare office building. “The Winchester hospital has not proposed scaling back its emergency department to the LHIN and the LHIN has not asked the hospital to do so, said Munter.

The letter stated, “During the consultation process, some concerns have been raised regarding the possible reduction in hours of WDMH’s emergency department. The board heard loud and clear that local communities value the WDMH emergency department and the board will be working closely with the Champlain LHIN as they conduct their own planning process at the regional level. Alex Munter is the new CEO of the Champlain LHIN. She said two of the employees have chosen to take early retirement and the other six employees are between 30 and 50 years of age. “They are confident and skilled people‌ but are a little shell shocked at this time. They will each receive a letter outlining their packages. EBI has always been a fair company.â€? Kemptville’s EBI facility will still care for the 325 bulls on the premises as the need for herdsmen, lab technicians and field workers will continue. Together, Gencor and EBI house close to 750 bulls for the Semax Alliance including some of the most sought after sires in the world. The agreement to merge companies was made easier due to the programs, events, ads, fleet rates, benefits and insurance programs that are already common for both companies. East-Gen will inseminate an estimated 270,000 females with close to 500,000 units of semen sold annually. In BC, the shift is to close barns in the spring.

The 100 bulls located at that site will be transferred to the three eastern Ontario facilities. Kemptville will gain another 24 bulls bringing its volume to near capacity. “It’s a changing environment, Carson said as to the shift in the way the products are brought to the farmers. In 2001, the number of dairy herds in Ontario dropped by 35 per cent. Herds are larger, but farms are fewer. “It’s about what we can do for our customers and by cutting costs like that in administration, we won’t have to increases prices of the product, said Carson. The 12 directors – six from each company – will elect an executive and the process to find a new GM will begin in the coming weeks. “I really don’t know what I will do, said Carson as July 1st will be the day the new merger comes into effect. “EBI has been very good to me. They treated me like a daughter. I really haven’t had a chance to think about what is next for me. I’m here until the end to help finish this one well.

“For residences that have already had the eco-inventory inspection done but didn’t receive a kit, I will go back and give them the kit as soon as they come in,” said Samantha Zaluski, an environmental studies co-op student from the University of Guelph. So far, Zaluski accompanied by a North Grenville environmental services operator, has completed inspections of all the municipal buildings and most of the commercial buildings, and just a few residences. In the kit is a handy ruler with several different size holes punched into it. The smallest hole measures one sixteenth of an inch in diameter and is a graphic reminder of just how a tiny leak can add up to an alarming amount of water loss. A drip from a hole that size will add up to 280 cubic meters of water over a three-month period at the municipality’s average system pressure. To put that in perspective – the average four-person household uses between 40 and 60 cubic meters of water per billing period. Other items in the kit, include leak detection dye tablets for your toilet and a toilet tummy – essentially a bladder – that fits inside a toilet tank displacing water to encourage lower water use. There are also two faucet aerators, an efficiency showerhead, and a handy shower hourglass to remind forgetful users to get out of the shower. Neither the quality nor quantity of water, available to the municipality are in question. However, raising water conservation awareness, according to Karen Dunlop, director of public works, benefits both users and the municipality. For users it means a lower water bill and for the municipality it increases efficiency, prolonging and optimizing the capacity

No simple answer to getting along

I

f anyone wanted to have an entertaining night out, they could try debating religion or the effect of multiculturalism in a tavern anywhere in the country. All you have to do is uncap the beer, and throw the question on the table. The argument about immigration and the supposed tearing apart of the Canadian social fabric would be up there with the question of which hockey franchise is the greatest of all time. Sports, like politics is a perfect breeding ground for debate and conflict but rarely agreement. We rise in the morning and go to sleep at night awash in news from all over the world. Most of that global information is threatening in nature. The impression created is that there are cultures out there that refuse to cooperate with western society and when they all arrive here in North America for one reason or another they will do their best not to integrate with our humble but successful system. The great fact about Canadian society is that we have the ability and inclination to embrace other cultures and people while somehow keeping hold of what we feel is innately ours. As a result, immigrants are able to adapt to a North American viewpoint without feeling their own roots are being threatened. Around the world

politicians and social observers have stated that multiculturalism in their particular country does not work - that immigrants arrive in a country only to set up their own small society as a home away from home. A closer look at the reasons people immigrate may explain why, in some cases, complete and healthy integration does not take place. The bottom line for most, if not all newcomers to Canada is jobs, and the freedom and stability to enjoy them. Having a meaningful job and the rewards of achieving your goals is a great way to keep discontent, frustration and, in the end, conflict to a minimum. Capitalism may not be the Holy Grail socialist thinkers are looking for but history shows that when capitalism is married to a democracy and dusted with just a pinch of socialism, a better deal is forged than in most other socialist and government models. Watching the upheaval in the Middle East, one cannot help but cheer as one country after another finds the courage to stand up for what are basic human rights - the right to live free and without fear. They too will have to find a model which incorporates a multi-cultural dynamic which recognizes one country over-all but allows for individual freedom of expression.

Future shock: The storm is always bigger before it arrives Reading the newspapers and watching TV, you might get the impression that storms are bigger these days. That’s difficult to know, since these things were not always measured with the precision that they are today. But it’s possible. And it’s also possible that it’s the media not the storms that are bigger. Storms are covered like never before, from every angle. CNN has photographs from space; the Weather Network has viewer videos of their driveways and tweets from people who have been looking outside. (The network also briefly turned its screen red, always a thrill.) This all comes from the arrival of 24hour news — all-news channels competing with each other, and news websites doing the same. In the struggle to fill all that time and all that cyberspace, any story can become big big big, and the weather is a perfect topic. The process is particularly evident in the U.S., which doesn’t do very well at dealing with snow but excels at covering it. The storm watch a few weeks ago, was all over the American news networks, and well before it even arrived. It was lucky that the crisis in Egypt received any coverage at all. The storm was expected to impact 100

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town million people, a headline on CNN said, before it began. This in itself was an upgrade from an earlier headline: “Tens of millions of people will be affected.” Meanwhile, split screens showed various U.S. locations that were already impacted, and they all looked like Ottawa on a calm day in early December. “This week’s winter storm could be one for record books,” said a headline, two days before the storm arrived. “Will weather snarl Super Bowl travel?” asked another headline. And just to show that Americans are not alone in fearing the worst, the Toronto Globe and Mail headlined: “Southern Ontario braces for a snowy slammer.” There is an important journalistic principle at play here, which is that you can get produce much better headlines before the event than after. The storm may not live up to expectations, but the

expectations can produce some real excitement. Will this storm be the worst ever? What if it is? Will the country come to a standstill? Will people freeze? Starve? What is the White House saying? Television does this particularly well, with breathless reporters in storm gear standing in the middle of cities that are expected to be paralyzed with snow, but are not yet. The same principle applies to sports writing, where the Super Bowl is predicted to be the best ever, or political writing, where fireworks are predicted when Parliament resumes. If the Super Bowl is a dud, or Parliament is peaceful (hah!), no one much notices that the predictions are wrong, since the media have already moved on to fevered speculating about other topics. Killer bees could be returning! For news consumers, it’s fine too, since we would sooner read about a storm coming than about a storm arriving. And for Canadian readers, there is the added smug satisfaction of snickering at the winter rookies in the States. Even if the storm does not live up to expectations — a safe assumption — the news media are not to be denied. it was called, finally arrived, CNN cut to its man in St. Louis, standing there in his red jacket and hat, in the middle of what appeared to be a nice day, with little wind and just a trace of snow on the ground. He pointed at the telephone wires above and said that they could be a problem if ice appeared, which it hadn’t yet. Then he walked over to a car and snapped an icicle off the grill, holding it up to the camera. An icicle! In winter! Has this ever happened? Positive Retraining and Innovative Methods to Employment

STAFF Local author Christine Stilwell visited Wolford Public School (WPS) in Merrickville Thursday, Feb. 3, to read her children’s book, Unlikely Sailors, to students in grades 1 to 3. Stilwell also donated a copy of the book to the school library. Students watched and listened as Stilwell told the story of two earthworms who persevered and sailed their way to dry land. Afterward, the students asked the author many questions about writing books, animation and publishing. Many students were excited about Stilwell’s visit and her book. “I liked the writing and the pictures a lot,” said Grade 1 student Kiera Turnbull. This experience was even more special

for Stilwell, who has a niece and nephew at the school and is a WPS graduate. “I wanted to have one of my books in the kids’ library,” Stilwell said. “Most of the kids’ reactions to the book have been great. I wanted to have the book in here because I went to this school.” Stilwell also wanted to share her book with young students because she believes the characters offer an important message. “They are just two tiny earthworms and they needed to get across to a dry place,” she said. “Even though they’re so small, they managed to do it.” Stilwell is currently writing another book entitled, The Sock Monster, and she hopes to come back to WPS to read it when it has been published.

True Love in Christ Ministry is the organizing body for this event that creates a warm, fun atmosphere while building relationships within the community and Lynn Ford is one of the organizers. “Our first objective was to promote restaurants in the local areas, encourage people to discover new venues and choose to eat out locally,” she said. “This eastern region has so much to offer. In such a short distance you have an array of fine dining selections to choose from.” TLC invited chefs from restaurants to participate in the challenge. The soups are prepared from scratch and judged by celebrities, as well as the public, in various categories. Creative, best

As Councillor of Rideau-Goulbourn, I would like to take this opportunity to explain the road closure of Donnelly Drive from McCordick Road to Merlyn Wilson Road. This road closure is scheduled to be in place from February 14th until the 23rd. The purpose is due to the replacement of a culvert 500m west of the Rideau River Provincial Park entrance. A similar culvert was replaced in the fall of 2008 to the east of the Park entrance. There is currently a signed detour in place. On behalf of the City of Ottawa, I appreciate your patience while this work is being completed. From time to time, I will be using space in the Kemptville Advance to keep residents in your area informed of the issues in Rideau-Goulbourn. If you have any further questions or concerns about this or any other issue, please contact me at Scott.Moffatt@ottawa.ca or by phone at 613-580-2491.

overall and best presentations are recognized. “The first year, the restaurants were delighted to participate and have this great exposure to the public,” Ford said. Ninety-nine people attended the first event and enjoyed tasting great soups and meeting the chefs in a relaxed atmosphere, she said. “The feedback was positive.” The event almost tripled in its second year with 269 tickets sold. Many new faces came due to the buzz from last year, Ford noted. Ford said they valued the personal feedback from celebrity judges such as Chef Michael Dunn, former chef to Her Majesty the Queen; Chef Gilles Penod from Cordon Bleu School and Pam Colacott, founder of the Trillium Cooking School. “The public had a hard time choosing the best soup and suggested having a second and third place – we listened and implemented that for this year,” Ford said. New restaurants are participating this year, but sadly, she added, “some have closed their doors.” The ones returning are preparing to kick it up a notch “They take the competition seriously, in a friendly way,” Ford said. “They see the value in it for everyone and understand it is also a fundraiser. We are so grateful and appreciate their time and effort to prepare the soup and take part in the challenge.” Restaurants participating (so far) include: Baldachin Inn, Merrickville; Basket Case Café, Morrisburg; Brewed Awakening, Kemptville; Bridgeview Restaurant, Prescott; Brigadoon Restaurant, Oxford Mills; Hot Cup Café, Russell; Kilt & Castle, Smiths Falls; Lock 17, Burrits Rapids; Sandy Row Restaurant and Golf Club, South Mountain; and Nick’s Pub and Family Restaurant, Morrisburg; Patsy’s Restaurant, Avonmore; Red Rooster, Kemptville; Salamanders, Kemptville; Sugarplum Café, Morewood; Village Angiques Tea Room and B&B, Williamsburg and theYellow Canoe Café, Merrickville. Guest judges are Chef Dunn of Brockville; Merrickville’s Chef Thomas Riding, Bill Welychks of the A Channel, Red Seal culinary Chef Dave Regular; and Ali “Cat” Misener and Geoff Winter, Ottawa’s DAWG 101.9 FM morning show hosts. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for children and available at the door, or by calling 613-989-3042 or 613-989-6078 to find an outlet near you.

The Heart and Stroke Ride for Debbie attracted more than 50 riders. The group met for breakfast and registration at the Red Dot Café in the Village of Osgoode on Saturday. Feb. 12. In the photo above, Tom Fawcett and Randi Dickinson from Metcalfe are surrounded by a sea of snowmobiles. The proceeds from the Ride for Debbie will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Debbie Swale died of a heart attack and she was a member of the Osgoode Carleton Snowmobile Trail Club. In the photo, on the left, are George Darouze, president of the club; Heather and Melissa Shahan, Debbie’s daughters; and Leigh Stacey.

It’s all relative

O-YA’s cook-off sees family members vying for top votes LJ MATHESON laurie.matheson@metroland.com

It was a friendly family feud at the second annual soup and fudge cook-off for the Osgoode Youth Association. The event raised $1,100 for programming for youth aged 12-18. More than 100 people cast their votes for a favourite soup and fudge at the event, on Feb. 5, hosted by O-YA. Categories for the top dishes were Judge’s Favourite and Community Favourite. Jill Woodley, the executive director at the youth centre, said it was an absolute hit with all who participated. “It’s a great community event,” she said. It was a family rivalry too, this time around. It was Jill and her sister Jane battling for supremacy for the top honours. Each earned the judge’s favourite vote for their fudge and soup respectively. Jill, who prepared her special maple fudge, said she wouldn’t divulge the recipe. “No way, that’s a secret,” she said with a laugh. “I only make it once or twice a year but it’s nice old-fashioned fudge that’s crumbly and not soft.” Her daughter, Grace Tessier, earned

the second place in the judge’s favourite category with her first attempt at a chocolate batch called Grammi’s Fudge. “She had a lot of fun with it,” Woodley said. “It was the first time she’d ever made it.” Woodley was second for the best soup vote for the judge’s category – just one point behind her sister, who earned the pottery prize, donated by Gilmer’s Clay Works of South Mountain. “She won both prizes: the celebrity judge’s vote and the village vote, with her Mulligatawny Soup,” Woodley said. “It’s an Indian-based curry soup.” The best fudge winning the village vote was made by Ric McKerracher of Osgoode with his dish called Maple Memories – his grandfather’s favourite recipe. The celebrity judges this year were Steph Legari for soup and Tracey Nesrallah for fudge. Fudge prize packages this year were courtesy of Home Sense and sponsors of the event were Cyril Cook and Janet Roffe. Complementing the cook-off was the seventh annual Firefighters’ Snowbowl that took place the same day. “Over 40 fire fighters made that event a huge success too,” noted Woodley. “ The mandate of the Osgoode Youth Association is to enrich the quality of life of young people, with emphasis on ages 12 to 18, living in the Osgoode Ward. OYA is dedicated to supporting the development of village-raised young people as world ready adults and engaged citizens.

North Grenville Council is recommending that the intersection at Clothier and Prescott streets be turned into a controlled intersection, based on staff recommendations. Staff at the municipal public works office, have been in talks

with county engineers to find a solution to the safety issue at the intersection. “I had a discussion with the county engineers over the past few months based on complaints we had received, most of them pedestrian related,” said Karen Dunlop, North Grenville director of public works. The best solution, according

Terry Butler. Although a courtesy intersection was briefly considered, it was quickly discarded because it is not enforceable under municipal bylaws or under the Highway Traffic Act. Once that procedure is completed, the stop signs could be up within weeks and, according to Dunlop, the crosswalks and accessibility ramps would be slated for this summer. “I still think it needs to be studied a bit further and the mayor has agreed to bring it up at county,” said Butler

The work will fall to the county should they approve the municipality’s request. “If they support a controlled intersection we will ask for a crosswalk which means they would have to pass a bylaw to make the crosswalk enforceable,” explained Dunlop. The 13th Annual Sweetheart Brunch got everyone ready for Valentine’s Day in North Grenville. The North Grenville Municipal Centre was busy as more than 1,000 hungry people arrived for their Sweetheart Brunch Sunday morning, Feb. 13. The Knights of Columbus were busy cooking up 2,500 strips of bacon and as many eggs, while filling countless coffee cups. There were at least 50 volunteers looking after all the people who came to the breakfast. Look for more information about the Sweetheart Brunch in the next edition of the The Advance.

On Family Day, 73’s face off with defending league champions BRIAN WILSON Special to the Advance

Thursday, February 24th, 2011 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

613-258-1919 Ext. 0

This week’s action in the CHL saw the Kemptville 73’s take on the Nepean Raiders in a home and home series. Both games had playoff implications for the 73’s. Before the game, 73’s General Manager, Paul Brenton, stated that “This was the tightest race for a playoff spot since Kemptville joined the league. Only 11 points separate the fifth place team from the tenth place team. With most teams having eight or nine games left, anything could happen.” In other news, Kemptville’s Keinan Brown received the honorable mention as Player of the Week for Feb.7. On Friday night, Feb. 11, in North Grenville, the Raiders opened the scoring at the 6:23 mark of the first period. They took a 2-0 lead before the end of the period. Nepean scored three more times in the second. The 73’s got on the board when Ben Hutton scored his eighth of the season. It was setup by Duhn and Upshall. Starting goalie Keinan Brown was replaced by Kyle Lamothe early in the period.

The Raiders, holding a comfortable 5-1 lead going into the third, played the remainder of the game on cruise control. The teams exchanged goals in the frame. Alex Brenton notched his thirtieth of the year, assisted by Hutton and Clark. Nepean went home with the two points and a 6-2 victory. Ben Hutton, with a goal and an assist, was named the games’ third star. Sunday afternoon, the 73’s visited the Yzerman Arena at the Nepean Sportsplex hoping to avenge Friday’s loss to the Raiders. Just 2:19 into the game, the 73’s opened the scoring. Nick Duhn, with assists from Nevins and Plouffe scored his fourteenth of the year. Later in the period on a great effort from Brandon Lesway, Josh Pitt got his ninth of the year. Holding a 2-0 lead after one, Kemptville came out flying in the second. The first 10 minutes of the period featured fast-paced, end-to-end action. A couple of defensive lapses saw the Raiders tie the game with back-to-back goals less than forty five seconds apart. Nepean added a power play goal with less than a minute left in the second to take a 32 lead to the dressing room at the end of two.

The third period had no scoring. The teams combined for 28 shots on goal in the period, but both goalies barred the door. For his performance, 73’s goalie, Kyle Lamothe was named third star of the game. After two losses this weekend, the 73’s need to pick up as many points as possible in their remaining seven games. Smiths Falls, now holding the last playoff spot, is seven points ahead of them and Ottawa is one point back of the Bears. As the regular season winds down, Kemptville has a lot of work ahead of them. Upcoming games feature the last two home games of the regular season for the 73’s. On Friday night, Feb.18, the Cumberland Grads will visit North Grenville. This is a must win game for Kemptville. Puck drop is at 7:30. On Family Day, Monday, Feb.21 the defending league champions, the Pembroke Lumber Kings will visit Kemptville. Puck drop for the special gameday will be at 3:30. Paul Brenton also said “This would be a fantastic opportunity for a family outing to see great junior hockey.” The Kemptville 73’s also giving free admission to children under 12. Catch some excitement!

Two brothers from the village of Edwards got the biggest cheers when they were introduced during Saturday night’s Professional Bull Riders (PBR) visit to Scotiabank Place. Shawn and Matt Fisher made their hometown debut in front of about 5,000 happy fans, some of whom donned cowboy hats for the evening. “I’ve got a lot of buddies from school here tonight,” 21-year-old Matt said following the event, adding that he and Shawn, 23, started riding horses at age two. “I always wanted to do this (bull riding),” Matt said. He rode his first bull just two years ago at a bull riding clinic in Quebec. Both brothers had only one ride on Saturday night, as neither managed to stay atop their bull for the eight seconds needed to qualify for the championship round and a shot at cash prizes. So do people think bull riders are crazy? “Most of the time,” Matt said with a smile. That goes for mom too. Matt said he and his brother had plenty of support from the crowd, “but our mom’s not here. “She’d rather watch us play hockey.” The Ottawa stop on the PBR tour was won by the only Australian among the night’s 30 riders, but it took three launches from the chute for Brett Hanrahan of New South Wales to take home the $7,833 top prize. The first two bulls Hanrahan rode in the final round stumbled, and the judges awarded him a re-ride both times. The crowd waited as the rider set himself for the last attempt and cheered as he wrapped up an eight second ride on a menacing-looking animal.

The hometown crowd showed their appreciation for the two local brothers, Shawn and Matt Fisher from Edwards, who showed their stuff at the Professional Bull Riders event at Scotiabank Place Saturday night.

“I never had four rides in one night,” Hanrahan said afterwards as other riders stopped to shake his hand or slap him on the back. To follow the PBR tour results, visit www.pbrcanada.com .

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE CASH IN AT THE OTTAWA ROADSHOW YESTERDAY! By Jason Delong

Yesterday at the Travelodge West, hundreds lined up to cash in antiques, collectibles, gold and jewejry at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow. The free event is in Ottawa all week, buying gold, silver, antiques and collectibles. One visitor I spoke with yesterday said, “It’s unbelievable, I brought in some old coins that had been in a little cigar box for years and some old herringbone necklaces—in less than fifteen minutes I left with a check for $700. That stuff has been in my jewelry box and dresser for at least 20 years.” Another gentleman brought in an old Fender guitar his fathar had bought years ago. The man said, “Dad had less than fifty bucks in that guitar.” The Roadshow expert that assisted him made a few phone calls and a veterinarian in Seattle, Washington bought the guitar for

“IT’S UNBELIEVABLE, I BROUGHT IN SOME OLD COINS THAT HAD BEEN IN A LITTLE CIGAR BOX FOR YEARS AND SOME OLD HERRINGBONE NECKLACES—IN LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES I LEFT WITH A CHECK FOR $700.” $5,700.00. The seller continued, “I got another $150.00 for a broken necklace and an old class ring. It’s not ever y day that someone comes to town bringing six thousand dollars with your name on it.”

Gold and silver pour into yesterday’s Roadshow due to highest prices in 40 years. markets are soaring,” says Archie Davis, a Roadshow representative. “Broken jewelry and gold and silver coins add up very quickly. I just finished working with a gentleman that had an old class ring, two bracelets and a handful of silver dollars. His check was for over $650.00. I would say that there were well over 100 people in here yesterday that sold their scrap gold.” The Roadshow continues today starting at 9am. The event is free and no appointment is needed. If you go to the Roadshow, you can cash-in your items for competitive prices. Roadshow representatives will be available to assess and purchase your items at the Travelodge West, this week through Saturday, in Ottawa.

Jeff Parsons, President of the Treasure Hunters Roadshow commented, “Lots of people have items that they know are valuable but just don’t know where to sell them. Old toys, trains, swords, guitars, pocket watches or just about anything old is valuable to collectors. These collectors are willing to pay big money for those items that they are looking for.” This week’s Roadshow is the best place to get connected with those collectors. The process is free and anyone can bring items down to the event. If the Roadshow experts find items that their collectors are interested in, offers will be made to purchase them. About 80% of the guests that attend the show end up selling one or more items at the event. Antiques and collectibles are not the only items the Roadshow is buying. “Gold and silver
