Keep dogs leashed, municipality says J.P. ANTONACCI jp.antonacci@metroland.com

SCIENCE FAIR Students at South Branch Elementary School enjoy their first science fair.

Going to take the dog for a walk this summer? It had better be wearing a leash. Responding to complaints from residents about uncontrolled dogs running free in the municipality, and a court case involving a dog bite which was dismissed in May because of a technicality, North Grenville is poised to make the use of a leash mandatory whenever a dog is off its owner’s property. Each year, the municipality typically responds to between 150 and 200 complaints involving dogs that bite or act aggressively. The dogs in question are usually not under the control of the people accompanying them, as is required under the current bylaw. The amendment to the bylaw recommended at last Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting mandates the use of a leash to ensure that no dogs can run free in North Grenville. The new legislation would mollify concerns about dogs impeding cyclists or hikers using the trail system. Retractable leashes can be used. The proposed bylaw update “is not overly onerous,” bylaw enforcement officer James Petersen told councillors. LEASH see page 2

THAT’S THE SPIRIT! North Grenville District High School (NGDHS) welcomed over 400 elementary school students to the school’s Fun Day on Monday. Students from Kemptville Public School, South Branch Elementary School, Merrickville Public School and Oxford-On-Rideau Public School enjoyed games and challenges on the school field before heading inside to dance in the gym. NGDHS student leaders got everyone excited with zany cheers and dance moves. “This is great for students to participate in activities with students from other schools as we prepare for our new 7-12 school,” said NGDHS Principal Steve Sharp.

Kemptville resident Bruce Rice strolls down Prescott Street on a sunny Tuesday afternoon with his Lhasa Apso, Sammy (left), and Peek-a-boo, his Shih-tzu. Rice says he always keeps his dogs on their leashes, which are specially designed to wrap around their upper body as opposed to their necks, reducing the risk of injury. Continued from the front Leashes are already mandatory for dogs in municipal parks, though owners routinely let their pups off the leash to run around Riverside Park or inside the tennis courts. Petersen admits he can’t be everywhere to enforce the bylaw. “People will break the law when I’m not there,” he said, adding that enforcement is particularly difficult on weekends. His department is driven by public complaints, meaning those who call his office to report bylaw infractions are more likely to see their concerns addressed. Dog owners spotted with their dogs off leash will be warned, and repeat offenders face a $70 fine. The leash law does not apply to hunting dogs, training dogs, and those used for show, as these dogs are considered under control when under the supervision of their keeper. Vicious dogs – those that have attacked or bitten other animals or people without provocation – must be kept in a secure, fencedin area, and when in public must be on a leash or chain not longer than two metres.

J.P. ANTONACCI jp.antonacci@metroland.com

The former fire hall on Reuben Crescent in Old Town Kemptville has sat vacant since closing last year as council debated whether to sell, lease or keep the historic property. Two groups – Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands, and a coalition of local community organizations led by the Navy League of Canada Kemptville Branch – bid to lease the fire hall after a request for proposals was sent out last April. Municipal staff has reviewed the applications, but before councillors make a decision, they would like to see the results of two ongoing studies on the state of mould in the basement of fire hall, and the feasibility of installing solar panels on the rooftop. Those results are expected in 30 days. Habitat wants to open a ReStore in Kemptville to collect and sell donated building supplies and raise money for the well-known affordable housing builder. The group will soon start a build in Prescott, and is looking for land to build several houses in Kemptville, executive director Ron Stembridge told Committee of the Whole last Monday. “We give people a hand up, not a handout,” Stembridge said. The Navy League-sponsored Sea Cadets will be without a home in the fall, and president Donovan Arnaud envisions the fire hall becoming the group’s new headquarters. The Sea Cadets would share the activity and storage space inside the fire hall with the Legion, Rotary, Little League

baseball, and other groups looking for “a permanent, part time home,” he explained. “We think this is a golden opportunity for us and the community” said Arnaud, accompanied by supporters from the aforementioned groups, including some 20 cadets and officers in full dress uniform. Neither proposal met the municipality’s business case requirement, said CAO Andy Brown. Council had hoped the new tenant would pay almost $10,000 in annual rent for five years, plus all utilities and maintenance expenses as part of a triple net lease. This arrangement would compensate the municipality for not selling the building outright and putting the proceeds toward Kemptville’s new library, as was originally planned before the two groups expressed interest in leasing. Habitat offered $5,400 in annual rent for five years, while the Sea Cadets promised $2,000 for a one-year renewable lease. Both groups plan to contribute to the repair of the building, with Stenbridge saying Habitat would replace the door and window frames in a manner that echoes the fire hall’s heritage aspects. The Sea Cadets would use the fire hall twice a week, and generate revenue by renting the building to other groups. While both proposals fall short financially, an energy audit currently being carried out by a local green energy company might offer hope for additional revenue through the use of the roof space for solar energy. “What council has asked is, let’s get the energy report together to see

what the whole picture looks like. Is there revenue that could be generated from the roof as well? So, we’re taking a look at everything,” Brown said. The municipality would consider whether any revenue obtaining through the sale of electricity, or the rental of the rooftop space to a private company, would be reinvested into the fire hall or used for other projects. One looming expense is the estimated $15,000 it would cost to remove the mould from the basement. Deputy Mayor Ken Finnerty was cool to the idea of a building supply store setting up shop in old town. He envisioned people dropping off “junk” at all hours of the night, with discarded items strewn about the neighbourhood or tossed into the nearby swimming pool. “I agree wholeheartedly with you having a building, but not there. That’s not the place for your kind of business,” Finnerty told Stembridge, who countered that Habitat’s Brockville store is kept litter free, and attracts 350 to 500 shoppers each day. He predicts 250 customers will come to the Kemptville store daily, creating more traffic for nearby businesses. Finnerty pointed out that the Brockville store is located along a high traffic route, and he doubted whether so many people would venture into old town to buy building supplies. The deputy mayor offered to help Habitat set up shop in a more suitable location. Council will review the study results and again address the fate of the fire hall at a future Committee of the Whole meeting.

Decision deferred on former fire hall

Fat Les returns, but still no lights for South Gower ball diamond enough, said former town councillor David Delaney, who since the early 1990s has advocated for better lighting to

accommodate the growing adult sports leagues that use the diamonds. ABOUT see page 9

469781-24-11

Players and fans craving a snack at South Gower Park this summer can once again count on Fat Les to satisfy their needs. North Grenville Committee of the Whole recommended the renewal of Leslie Winters’ license to offer mobile canteen service to the park for a fee of $1,000. Fat Les’ was the only application received by the municipality, which had issued a request for proposals for the canteen service. Winters’ rib-sticking mixture of poutine, hot dogs and other summer treats will be available near the soccer fields, thanks to

the soccer teams asking for his return. Baseball fans will have to walk a short distance for their meal, which Coun. Barb Tobin wryly noted might be a good thing, since they can walk off the calories on their way back to the diamond. That’s if they can find it in the dark, since for another summer South Gower’s Ball Diamond #2 will be without electric lighting. Installing lights has been on the municipality’s capital projects “wish list” for several years, said parks director Darren Patmore, but hasn’t yet made the final budget. He hopes 2012 will be the year both diamonds finally see the light. That day can’t come soon

OPINION

Kemptville Advance - JUNE 16, 2011

It’s better in North Grenville

Imagine if Leeds and Grenville wanted to host a special meeting where they would bring together all of the key players from this part of the world to discuss local issues. One can imagine the municipality getting ready for this kind of event as they have done several times in the past. In many ways, such meetings mirror the really big ones such as a G8 or G20 conference. Of course, the price tag would be a little different. The food and refreshments would be sufficient, and would probably come in less than the $664 million that was spent at the recent world leader meetings. In Kemptville, they could probably get a good deal for pizza with the size of the order they would have to make. Security would be as close as a 911 call and since most, if not all, of those attending would at least have some knowledge of each other, no fistfights would be expected. Terrorist groups would not be able to find North Grenville. Other local meetings have produced tangible and interesting results. As a rule, these kinds of meetings are rare enough, that when one is held here, it becomes an all day event. Fortunately, there is little politics spread

around but a great deal of networking and information sharing takes place, depending on the topic. Last year, North Grenville hosted an economic summit. Everyone was invited and everyone showed up. The coffee was hot and rich and the food was excellent. The cost was less than $664 million. The recent news from the departing Auditor General, Sheila Fraser, that the bill for the G8 and G20 summits was a cool $664 million comes as no surprise even though it is hard for anyone to imagine what kind of meeting that much money would buy over a few days. Most of that money was probably spent on security, and the other G8 and G20 countries will most likely spend as much or more when it is their turn to play the host. The terrorists didn’t have to spend a dime. After all was said and done about the G20 and G8 get-togethers, we are hearing little of substance about what was said and agreed on. All the attention is about the bill. What was achieved? Bigger is not better-it is often just convenient. Next time invite everyone to North Grenville. We do it better.

COLUMN

Getting around the politics of getting around Election season and construction season merge once again with the announcement that the province will spend a ton of money to make things easier on the Queensway. Who knows? It might work. Mostly it hasn’t. The creation of more lanes leads to the creation of more cars and a quick return to the congestion that began it all. It can only be a pipe dream in this age when people are driven by cars, but wouldn’t it be nice if that kind of money — $200 million this time — could be spent on light rail and buses. These thoughts are occasioned by a week in Toronto, a vastly different city but with some conditions that should be familiar to us. Spending some time there, mostly on foot, gives you a useful perspective on getting around in the city. First, any city is better if you don’t have to drive in it. Toronto’s network of subways, buses and streetcars takes the strain out of getting around the city. If you can walk a few blocks, public transit will get you at least close to where you want to go. You save the big parking fees and the mental anguish that go with driving a car in that city. We don’t have public transit like that. Ours is not bad for getting from a suburb

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town

into downtown. But you wouldn’t want to spend a day trying to hit all the Ottawa high spots — the National Gallery, Carleton, U of O, Rockcliffe, the Newport and the Prescott — by bus. Mind you, not all of Toronto is that well served either. If you live within reach of the subway, you’re fine, but many don’t. It has been observed, rather ominously, that the people most likely to vote for Rob Ford, the ultra-conservative winner in Toronto’s 2010 mayoralty race, were those who lived in areas with the worst public transit. In Ottawa, an ultra-conservative could pick up quite a few votes, using that criterion. But transit isn’t taken that seriously here, especially politically. If transit was uppermost in people’s

Serving North Grenville and area since 1855

113 Prescott St., P.O. Box 1402 Kemptville, ON K0G 1J0

minds, a city politician who failed on transit issues would be out of work quickly. Transit matters less here, and the reason for that is that it is still possible to drive. Sure, you can run into a little congestion, a five-minute delay here, a 10-minute delay there, but most downtown traffic problems could be solved easily by opening up a big trap door under the tour buses on Wellington Street. Meanwhile, people still think it is easier to drive. In Toronto, some people think that. You can see them, not moving on the Gardiner, not moving on the Don Valley Parkway, trying to circle the block for the fifth time to find a parking space, stuck in the left-turn lane on King or Queen. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, some of that grief is headed our way. Notice how many of the downtown parking lots you used to frequent aren’t there any more? It happens here too: more condos, more people, fewer parking lots. The bad thing is that it is harder to drive a car; the good thing is that fewer people will try.

All of which poses a challenge to the public transit people. If you don’t want people to drive in Ottawa, what alternatives are you going to give them? Oh, right: a tunnel under downtown. Do you we (a) really think that’s going to happen? or (b) really think that’s going to solve everything? ood public transit, which most of Toronto has, is not only about getting to work and back. It is also about getting to the store and back, getting to the hockey game and back, getting from the museum to the shopping centre and over to the supermarket before heading home. It would be worth a lot more than $200 million to have that here.

did her makeup, stuck on false eyelashes and fingernails. All by herself. Normally she has at least one of her older sisters around to help with this ritual before a special event. They lock themselves in the bedroom with the radio blaring and all I can hear is the occasional burst of laughter. This time her sisters had to work, so Polly had to do everything herself. Well, knowing Polly, she would have done it all herself anyway. Her sisters would have just been there for company. This time she was stuck with me. I stood helpless and watched as she fussed with her hair, the nail glue, and those fringes of eyelashes. I offered advice that wasn’t taken, and encouragement that may not have been heard. I don’t think I helped much by being there, but I’m glad I was. Teenagers may spend the bulk of their time locked in their room with the computer and the iPhone, but at least they are there. when we drive them to work and school, parties and shopping. Occasionally we share a few laughs. I’ve been lucky to have had so many of those memorable moments with my daughters. We have photos of some of these times spent together, so that they will never be forgotten. This is the end of an era. I don’t have to nag Paulina about getting up for school or doing her homework anymore. I don’t have to remind her to do the laundry or the dishes. Our relationship will now evolve into one where we talk on the phone, she drops in for Sunday dinner and special family celebrations. She gets to make her own schedules now. It’s her life to do with what she wants.

I’m very excited for her. At the same time, there is a huge lump in my throat because I remember struggling to get her to sit down in that high chair, like it was only yesterday. I remember chasing her naked butt down the street when she escaped from me at bath time. I remember her kindergarten teacher calling home to tell me that my tiny four-year-old was a nervous little girl, and that perhaps I should send more snacks. Somewhere along the way, that little girl became a very independent young woman. She doesn’t need any of us anymore. She will be just fine on her own. I can’t take the credit for raising such a strong, intelligent and

mature young woman. Paulina took a little bit from each person that she admired, and with the best parts of us she formed herself. Paulina has always had a heart for the needy person in school or in the neighbourhood. I hope she never loses that. Maybe she will find a future that is more of a calling than a career. All I want for her is health and happiness. And as our time together living under the same roof draws to an end, I wish I could travel back in time for just an afternoon, to the day when she asked me if I would play Barbies with her, and I was too busy doing something else. I have the time now, Paulina. Ask me again.

The Accidental Farmwife

473051-24-11

The years spent on a farm are marked by seasons rather than by specific dates. You count another year when you reach another lambing season, haying season or planting season. Sometimes we remember the year by how bad or good a particular season was—by how much rain or snow we got. How cold it was when the lambs were born. Life, on the other hand, is measured by moments. I remember the night of my wedding rehearsal. The Farmer called me out onto the porch, away from the crowd of family and friends, so that he could tell me something privately. That is one of my treasured moments. We are entering another season of our lives now, as our most recent graduate plans to move out of the farm. She wants to live in the city, on her own, until she figures out what she wants to study at university. She is still young— not yet eighteen—and feels she needs the extra time to figure out what her path will be. I know I shouldn’t worry about her, because she consistently makes very mature, wise decisions about her life, all on her own. But I worry anyway. Friday was Paulina’s prom. It was the culmination of a month of prom dress, shoe and handbag shopping. She is grateful that I spent all that time and money driving her around and getting her fully kitted up for the event. I am grateful for the time we spent together, the moments she confided in me, and the laughs we shared. On Friday, I watched as she

Leadership and good works go together JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com

Leadership is a funny thing. Often taking leadership action is more effective than talking about it. Two North Dundas District High School students, Rebecka Forward and Anja Manuel have done just that. The school, along with students from all grades, held a “Walk for Wellness” event at on May 31. This was the very first fundraising event of its kind. Rebecka Forward and Anja used what they had learned during their leadership course at the school to plan for the walk. The two girls have also worked as co-op students at the

Winchester District Memorial Hospital, (WDMH). The walk fits quite nicely into the hospital’s “What’s Your Story” program. “I came up with the idea of the event mainly because I do co-op at the hospital, and I thought it would be great to help out the local community hospital,” explained Rebecka. Starting off on her own, Rebecka, had help from Chelsea Dunn and Troy Cross at the hospital. “They helped me with the pledge forms and posters, along with giving me some crucial knowledge they had learned over the years,” said Rebecka. The Walk for Wellness was a success. “We raised $963.64, and we’re quite

proud of raising what we did,” said Anja. The student’s leadership class went hand in hand with what the two girls were trying to do. “I think that our leadership class helped us tremendously. The course teaches us fundamental knowledge for running all types of events. We also learned that not all parts of leadership can be learned, some are just acquired, therefore it can be a lot of hard work,” said Anja. The walk was fun for students. What We Need In Life For someone to be content, joyful and at peace in this life, I believe that they need the following: faith and trust in God, to give love and be needed, meaningful work, and something to look forward to. One could argue that this is only the tip of the iceberg, and that there are many other things that should be included if we are to be content with our lives, such as good health, money, etc. There are relatively few people in life with perfect health or a lot of money, but true happiness is indeed a blessing from God. Our awareness and gratitude for all the good things that have been given to us should bring joy and happiness to our hearts, and we should always give thanks to our Heavenly Father for how much He loves us. We can be confident that God wants His people to be full of joy and to have peace in their lives. The Bible tells us that He will protect those who love Him, and they will be truly happy.

May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the holy Spirit you may abound in hope. R.S.V.

I am writing in response to Mr. Gooch’s recent letter in your paper (“Special interest groups present arguments to council,” May 19). Quite frankly, there is much in Mr. Gooch’s letter upon which a person could comment, but I wish to focus on the part that revealed his views on history. On that subject, Mr. Gooch wrote: “I have little if any interest in the past; it is the future that interests me. The future meaning the ability of people to pay their bills and not have to pay for others hobbies and interests.” Questionable grammar aside, it is to Mr. Gooch’s credit that he minces no words in terms of letting us know where he stands on the issue. It is also interesting to note that these are the views of a former North Grenville mayor. In my response, I wish to move beyond the standard “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” line of argument, or even how heritage can (or does not) serve as an economic driver in our municipality (a very complex subject). Rather, I wish to relate a personal experience that highlighted for me the importance of studying the past. Many years ago I was fortunate to study under T.H.B. Symons at Trent University in Peterborough. Professor Symons was the author of what became known as the “Symons Report,” which

recommended establishing Canadian Studies departments in Canadian universities and in universities abroad. A key component of his proposed Canadian Studies program was Canadian History. In his view, developing an understanding of our past was vital to understanding ourselves as a nation. In fact, his goal of studying history was encapsulated in the real title of his famous report: To Know Ourselves. Without this knowledge, we would be adrift as atomized individuals with little knowledge of what we had done and what we could do as a collectivity. Simply put, without a knowledge of the past, we would have little understanding of ourselves as Canadians, Ontarians, or as members of our community. Those ideas stuck with me, and continue to inform my views of the past, present, and future. I thank Mr. Gooch for his honesty, and for presenting his opinions in the pages of your newspaper. I will clip and save his letter, and will show it to my children when they are grown up. I will use it to provide them with an example of an attitude in the past (hopefully, it will be in the past by that time) in which people were almost obsessive about shaving a few dollars off their taxes at the expense of understanding ourselves as a collectivity. Yours sincerely Kerry Badgley Kemptville

J.P. ANTONACCI jp.antonacci@metroland.com

When her father Adrian died suddenly in 2002, soon after he began showing symptoms of Huntington Disease, a hereditary brain disorder that would claim the life of her grandfather, Marinus, four years later, Alexandra Knops leaned heavily on her Christian faith for the strength to carry on. Knops was already quite familiar with the devastating effects of Huntington’s, a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes brain cells to die and eventually completely takes over the body. Her grandfather’s advanced symptoms made communication with his granddaughter impossible. “I never really knew him,” said Knops, 21. Her father’s sudden death hit the family hard. “The first few years were awful,” she said. “I was depressed and went through all the emotions of grief. Now, I think about him, but (I know) he’s in peace now. He’s where he wanted to be. So I’m just happy and moving on, trying to get things straightened out.” Knops’ faith has been an instrumental part of her healing pro-

cess. The members of her church, the North Grenville Community Church in Kemptville, took an interest in the young girl, encouraging Knops in her studies, taking her out for coffee to get her mind off things, and inviting her to join a “care group” of people of all ages who meet weekly for fellowship and Bible study. “They’ve been with me every step of the way. I’ve been at that church since I was four, so when my dad passed away, it was just an overwhelming sense that they were right there with me,” Knops said. “I couldn’t imagine going through it without my church.” What impressed Pastor Dan Massey was how open Knops was to receiving help. “Rather than pulling away, Alex put herself out there so that other people could get involved in her life,” he said. It was a brave choice that has paid off in many ways. When she was 13, Knops went on a religious retreat with her church’s youth group that would change her life. “My dad died in 2002, and the way I coped with that was I gave my heart to God in 2003,” she said. “I had my coping time, and then (I said), I’m good to go now. I’m better, and stronger in my faith.”

Alexandra Knops (left) and her mother, Kika Smith, will take part in a 5 km run for the Huntington Society of Canada on June 26. Last year, Knops cheered on her older sister Alyssa and her cousin as they participated in a 10 km fundraising run for the Huntington Society of Canada. While watching from the sidelines, she was moved to see one

person with Huntington’s finish the course in their wheelchair. “I thought, wow, they’re still going on and doing what they can do, even though they know this is going to take their life eventually.” Earlier this year, Knops registered for the 5 km run in Toronto on June 26. She and her mother, Kika Smith, began jogging through the streets of Kemptville to get into race shape. Training is “really hard,” Knops said with a tired smile. She said her mother keeps her going on nights when she would rather not lace up her running shoes yet again. “She eggs me on,” she laughed. Friends at her church have supported Knops with prayers and donations. She also set up an online donation page at http://huntington.akaraisin. com/Common/Event/Home. aspx?seid=3723&mid=8. Massey sees the run as a positive way for Knops to work through her grief. “Grief is a tragedy, no matter what it is. But what do we do with that? Do we become bitter? Do we always look at the negative side of grief ? Or do we go, I have hurt, and now I can help others who are hurting,” he said.

Knops’ faith helps her cope with another unsettling reality: because her great-grandmother, grandfather, and father had Huntington Disease, there is an even chance she has it too. “It’s bound for one of us three now,” Knops said, referring to her older sister, Alyssa, 22, and brother, Christian, 25. Perhaps because of that high probability, Huntington’s doesn’t often come up. “It’s the rare time that we (talk about it),” she said. “It’s one of those things that’s really hard to talk about because of the intenseness of it, you could say.” Awareness of disease is improving, but slowly. Roughly 21,000 Canadians either have or are at risk for Huntington’s. Her sister is undergoing genetic testing to determine whether she has the disease, but Knops isn’t sure she’s ready for that. Knops has been out of school for several years, trying to deciding where next to take her life. She is thinking of moving to British Columbia to train for ministry work, following her pastor’s example. Whatever happens, she knows her unwavering faith will see her through any hardship. “It’s just unbelievable,” she said. “God’s always there for me.”

As far back as 1997, Delaney chaired the committee that produced the recreational needs study which found that lights at both South Gower diamonds would soon be a necessity. He is aware that each year council must balance many priorities, but feels that “it’s well beyond time” for the lights to “get off the back burner.” “I think it’s the adult ball leagues’ turn to see some return for what they partake in the community and what they invest in the community,” Delaney told Committee of the Whole. Members of the North Grenville Mixed SloPitch League and the South Gower Men’s Lobball League formally requested the additional lighting at a Committee of the Whole meeting on May 2, and Delaney, whose wife plays in the mixed league, returned with a smaller contingent of league representatives last week. This summer, the 17-team mixed league had to turn away an additional two teams because of a lack of diamond space. The adult players’ registration fees help maintain the park, Delaney noted, and the teams routinely take part in fundraising tournaments like last weekend’s VandenTillaart/Finnerty-O’Neil Memorial Family Classic. Council was sympathetic to the leagues’ plight and promised to keep the project in the forefront. Tobin acknowledged that the lights are needed immediately, but pointed out that all budget funds have already been allocated for this year. She encouraged players to come out en masse to a 2012 budget meeting in the fall to show their continued support for the project. Council directed staff to cost out the project for next year, and to look into whether the ball diamonds at Riverside Park could handle more games. Riverside isn’t an ideal solution, said Delaney, since enrolment in youth leagues is also on the rise, and “it’s not a safe mix” to have adult and children playing too close together. “I think your time has come,” Mayor Gordon told Delaney, striking a hopeful tone that come next summer, night games would be the norm on both diamonds. Committee of the Whole met in the former South Gower library, a municipal building that has been sold pending the passage of a rezoning bylaw at Monday’s Council meeting. More details on the purchaser will be released once the sale is finalized.

Students help WDMH with fundraising event The Walk for Wellness event was organized as part of a 30 per cent evaluation for the girl’s leadership course at the school. The course has been going on at the school for several years. The leadership experience has become very popular at the high school. It gives students an opportunity to take the lead on various academic, awarenessraising and charitable initiatives that are important to them. “The course is pretty popular because it allows a student to take ownership of an event,” said Chelsea Dunn, Fund Development Associate at the WDMH. “The students learn how to run things,” she added. The Walk for Wellness came about when Rebecka came into the foundation’s office to talk about different kinds of walks. “They have gotten a good response

from the community,” said Dunn. The leadership class is taught by Leadership Teacher Cheryl Williams. “The leadership course encourages students to create an event, using strategies they have learned throughout the course, and develop the event from the planning stages, coordinate and run the event and see it through to it’s completion,” explained Williams. The various projects that came out of the leadership class include some nonmonetary ones. One students created a musical day for seniors, which included playing instruments and singing. “The students recognize how much work and energy is required to organize an event. They learn show to plan for the unexpected and gain confidence and selfawareness that will definitely benefit them in the future,” said Williams.

announcements and commentary. The Kemptville Players ran the children’s centre, and the Kemptville Horticultural Society organized and ran the plant section. Kemptville Truck Centre, Kemptville Building Centre, dePencier Building Supply, and Keller Williams Real Estate contributed trucks and drivers . Canteen supplies were donated by Albert’s Meat Shop, Beking Poultry Farm, Giant Tiger, Lanthier Bakery, and the B&H Foodliner. The B&H and Food Basics lent grocery carts, which were of great help in transporting goods during the sorting and set-up process. “Fast Eddie” Auto Recycling & Container Service provided dumpsters and hauled recyclables. All unsold clothing was sent to the Salvation Army, and Community Living took the unsold books. Selected unsold furniture was donated to Lazarus House. “The sale was a success for sure, with the help of the many volunteers and the support of our community,” said convenor Lillian Leonard.

Hey Day in Kemptville kicks off garage sale season

Community

Rideau Glen golfers tee off at last KPI to spring The Mousetrap in November; STAFF Week after week, the members of the Ladies Golf League of Rideau Glen laced up their cleats and hoped the weather would finally let them get out on the links. And week after week, it rained. Finally, the golfers awoke to a sunny day. They decided they had to take advantage of the weather and launch their season, even if it was the most blisteringly hot day of the month. The women struggled in the 33 degree heat and high humidity, buoyed by the knowledge that their beloved Chef Paul had a scrumptious meal waiting as part of the league’s monthly scramble and dinner meeting. At the meeting, club president Marjorie Graham welcomed 11 new members. The following week, the group staged the Havelin Tournament, which had also been postponed for three weeks thanks to

that pesky precipitation. Little did they know that the wild weather was only just beginning. The players sliced and putted their way through one extreme after another, from scorching heat to one of the coldest and windiest days of the spring. It was only 12 degrees when they teed off at 9 a.m., and winds of 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h played havoc with their shots. But the golfers persevered, and the duo of Marjorie Graham and Val Hansen took the top prize, followed by Irene Barkhouse and Lana Hanes, who tied with Marg McCornock and Mary Shore for second place. The hardy players will receive their trophies at the end-of-year banquet. The league is down a member for the remainder of the season, as a serious operation will keep the recuperating Joyce Charter off the fairway…and out of the rain.

auditions this week

STAFF What do a skittish architect, a suspicious foreigner and nervous newlyweds have in common? They all become trapped in a snowbound guest house during Agatha Christie’s beloved play The Mousetrap, where an odd assortment of guests must evade and unmask a murderer, with hilariously sinister results. Fresh off their crowd-pleasing spring production of Jenny’s House of Joy, Kemptville Players Inc. (KPI) will bring the classic whodunit to Leslie Hall this fall. “The Mousetrap is one of those plays that just keeps crowds happy again and again,” explains director Monica Cleland. “Audiences never tire of this one. And they seldom figure out the ending, either.”

The

The Mousetrap opened in London’s West End in 1952 and has run continuously ever since, entertaining audiences during more than 24,000 performances. Cleland, who was the assistant director for Jenny’s House of Joy, is thrilled to bring such an acclaimed production to Kemptville. Some parts have already been cast, but KPI is looking for one female and four male actors “Send us your men,” Cleland joked. “Well, actually, I’m not joking. We need young men for this play.” Auditions will be held Thursday, June 16 and Sunday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall at 119 Clothier St. E. in Kemptville. No experience is necessary, but a love of theatre is a must. Performance dates are November 3-6 at Leslie Hall. For more information, call Monica at 613-258-9254 or just drop by on either audition day.

Thank You for choosing us!

Jonsson’s Independent Wins Again In 1988, Steve and Sylvie Jonsson opened a new store in Kemptville that would grow and expand with our community. Today, everyone knows Jonsson’s Independent at the Kemptville Mall. With the latest expansion complete selections throughout the store have increased, their organic section carries more choices, and their garden centre is now over 10 000 square feet. With more products the choices you expect to find are here, right down the street. And let’s not forget Canada’s best selling house brand President’s Choice bringing hundreds of products and No Name Brand at a fraction of the price of name brand items.

As our community has grown, so has the support that Steve and Sylvie have given back to our area through donations to many local charities and events. To name a few: The North Grenville Public Library, KDH, the Salvation Army, sports teams and the list goes on. The BBQ from the store is famous as the hardest working BBQ in the area over the summer months. Steve and Sylvie promise to continue to grow and bring in the products you want. Their commitment to our community is strong and growing as they look to the future. Come see the difference at Jonsson’s Independent and we are sure you will agree that

Personal expertise at Canadian Paint and Wallpaper More than paint and décor, Canadian Paint and Wallpaper’s owner and operator, Rob Segan, offers his personal expertise and enthusiasm for each project that comes through his door. “I want to create excitement around people’s projects when they come into the store,” Rob said. “I try and pull the stress out of their projects. Get people to move away from deadlines and the hammer and nails of projects so they can focus on the fun.” With more than 15 years experience in the paint and décor industry, and three lines of all Canadian made paint products, the people at Canadian Paint and Wallpaper are equipped to fulfill any redecorating needs. “I want to guide people into getting something they will really like,” said Rob, who added he embraced his

role of leading people away from plain white paint. His positive and knowledgeable approach to renovation has helped earn Canadian Paint and Wallpaper a Reader’s Choice Platinum award in the category of paint and décor. Rob, who was humbled by the reader’s votes, wanted to express his thanks to the Kemptville community for their continued support. Canadian Paint and Wallpaper offers no charge in home consultations for window treatments. With an agreement to purchase window treatment, they also offer a free paint colour consultation while they are in the home. Bayfield Manor Retirement Home first opened its doors in May 1990. At that time there were 23 rooms on the retirement side. Since then the owners have expanded twice, based on waiting times. There are now 57 rooms. It is a very busy place! As well as providing retirement rooms, the facility also has 66 nursing home beds. Our mission is to provide each resident under our roof, the opportunity to live in an environment that will recognize him/her as an individual with strengths that need to be maintained,

needs that require support and opportunities to happiness and fulfillment in his/her later years. Within that mandate we also strive to open our doors to service groups, churches and support agencies within the community so that our residents continue to participate in community life. Bayfield management and staff are thrilled with this award. We do take great pride in providing a service to our clients and it is special when the community recognizes our efforts.

Now Bigger and Better to serve you more…

Thank you, our customers, for believing in and encouraging us. We believe we have earned this recognition, because of our commitment to recognizing each of our customers as individuals and working with them to produce a product we are both proud of.

As part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations this year, Canadian Tire opened the doors of its new Kemptville store on May 19. With help from a stellar turnout of customers, staff and invited guests, Canadian Tire opened its doors and is now officially open for business. This expansion is just an example of the explosive growth in Kemptville and Canadian Tire being a landmark for this community and its residents.

Tire. “The renovated store reflects our commitment to being loyal to our customers by delivering top-notch customer service.”

Bigger really is better at this flagship store. More selection, more products, bigger aisles, as well as the much anticipated addition of Marks’ Work Warehouse.

At 42,000 square feet, and with more than 60,000 products on the shelves, the new store truly is a shopper’s paradise. Everyone will find something: whether it’s for inside, outside, the do-it-yourselfer, or the car enthusiast, Canadian Tire has you covered. Easy checkout and customer pickup will have you in and out in no time, although you will be tempted by the ongoing new and expanded product line.

“We’re excited to be growing in Kemptville and better serve our customers with Canadian Tire’s new Smart Store format that features a robust lineup of products at great value and a unique shopping experience,” says Frank Hoffman, Associate Dealer, Kemptville Canadian

In keeping with the Smart Store philosophy, you will find creative, inviting displays in the Automotive, Seasonal, Home Improvement, Lighting, Tools, and Sporting Goods departments offering competitively priced merchandise and unparalleled attention to detail.

Thanks to COBA for the many beautiful photo's. You're so fun to work with and your patience with all the kids is amazing, which made everyone's experience a good one. So many people comment on my photo's and ask me where I got them done, and I'm proud to say COBA Studio and Print Shop. Thanks so much! Keep up the wonderful work. Tanya

We have industry leading vehicles, we have added Buick & GMC brands, expanded our services, extended our service hours, and continue to look for ways to best serve our valued customers.

We are fortunate to be part of a community as vibrant as ours. We are thankful and take pride in supporting the many organizations, local charities and events that we have become involved with. You’ve got problems...JoeComputer has solutions What do you do when your computer stops working? You should be bringing it to Spencerville, where JoeComputer offers low-cost local computer service and repairs. JoeComputer has been successful by offering customers value for service since 1998. With a maximum charge of 2 hours labour, you know how much it is going to be to repair your system before you drop it off. The techs specialize in computer diagnostics as well as complete system restorations, virus and spyware removal and protection, creating small computer networks, and computer upgrades (including memory, hard drives, video and communications). They custom-build all of their new desktop systems using proven quality parts, and offer in-store service on everything they sell.

A few years back, Joe discovered a need for rural wireless high-speed internet, and began building access towers in remote areas. They have now grown to over 600 customers and 21 tower locations located throughout the area, with the newest being in South Mountain and Pelton’s Corners. With no contract to sign, and friendly local tech support, they are a great alternative to other wireless companies in the area. Webdesign and website hosting are another service they can provide, beginning at $10 per month. Contact JoeComputer in Spencerville for all of your computer needs, you can give the staff a call at 613-658-2314 or visit their website at www.joecomputer.ca.
