Fire destroys landmark business Auction house owner vows to rebuild

Firefighters from North and South Dundas fire departments are dwarfed by the wreckage of the Rideau Auctions liquidation building as they hose down hot spots from the early Friday morning fire. The building was completely destroyed. Hunter and Theresa McCaig, owners of Rideau Auctions watched as firefighters poured water on the collapsed building. “Thank goodness no one was hurt,” said a shaken Theresa McCaig. The couple had been getting ready for a planned liquidation sale that was to have started that morning. Consignments of

items were starting to arrive by truck but were not allowed into the businesses parking lot. Hunter McCaig said that he was diverting suppliers to a warehouse for the time being. Surrounded by police, firefighters and smoke, the McCaig’s greeted neighbours and friends who had arrived to help in any

that they could. Neighbouring businesses were calling to see how they were doing. Undaunted by what was a severe loss Hunter said, “We will rebuild. There will be a lot of people who will be disappointed.” FIRE see page 2

Rideau Auctions, a business tradition in Winchester and a landmark business in the region, was devastated by a fire in their liquidation building early Friday morning, June 24. The 16,000 sq. foot building housed more than $500,000 worth of inventory, including clothing, furniture. toys and food. The wood and metal building was completely destroyed. No one was injured in the blaze that produced a pall of black smoke over the countryside, making motorists driving south, on County Road 31, slow down. The smoke, at times, completely blanketed the Winchester section of the main road connecting Ottawa to Morrisburg. The fire was spotted by a SD&G police officer who was on patrol in Winchester at around 6:55 a.m. North Dundas and South Dundas firefighters were on the scene within ten minutes and by 8 a.m. the fire was brought under control. There were more than 50 firefighters at the blaze. Const. Mark Evans. The OPP media spokesperson at the scene said the fire was quickly contained by firefighters. The building, which sits behind the recently built Rideau Auctions main auction center, was used to house the popular liquidation sale part of the business.

No one had looked on that shelf for years. Decades, maybe. Bolted to the side of an equally ancient desk in the North Grenville District High School library, and partially blocked by a closet door, the shelf and its dusty contents could have easily found themselves tipped into a dumpster as the school culls its inventory and prepares to move into its new building next year. But unbeknownst to anyone still at the school, this shelf held a treasure. Some years ago, a woman dropped off a binder of old photographs at the school office. It seems she was moving to Brockville and wanted the pictures to remain in the town in which they were taken. The binder was shelved, and promptly forgotten. But with history in the air as NGDHS prepares for its 75th anniversary reunion this fall, a retired teacher remembered that binder, and told Principal Steve Sharp to keep an eye out for it.

Shanahan, president of the North Grenville Historical Society, was delighted when the school donated the pristine photo collection to the town archives. The historian has made several presentations to NGDHS classes, and students have also toured the archives. Old photos are always a big hit, as the students marvel at what used to be, and wonder why things have changed. Sharp said unearthing artifacts like the photo album adds to the “feeling of reminiscence” as staff and students prepare to leave the beloved school on Prescott Street and move into their new facility on Concession Road. The photos will be housed at the Historical Society archives, above the courthouse on Water Street. They will also be posted at historynorthgrenville.ca. Unlike the woman who wanted to leave her prized pictures in Kemptville all those years ago, people today now have an official place to donate their little bits of history thanks to the archive, Shanahan noted. No school visit is complete without homework, and Shanahan has his – he’s off to identify the people in the photographs.

It was too early to determine what Rideau Auctions would do next, however McCaig said he was definitely making plans to rebuild. Two years ago, Rideau Auctions opened up a separate building to deal solely with administration and auctions. The liquidation building was dedicated to house the thousands of items area residents had come to expect to find. That part of the business was a local tradition. “It was growing and growing,” said Theresa. Police say the fire is not regarded as suspicious and the cause is being investigated.

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario has approved their budget for the 2011-2012 school years. The school board has managed to continue with a balanced approach to their student’s educational needs and school board’s evolving infrastructure. The board approved an operating budget of $164.9 million and a capital budget of $7.6 million on June 21, 2011 The school board’s chair, Ron Eamon, stated in a press release, “Once again, I must extend my gratitude to the board’s executive council and the finance department or their continued dedication to providing our students with the best possible Catholic education, while remaining fiscally responsible. This budget will help insure that the 2011-2012 year will be as successful as 2010-2011.” On the capital cost side the catholic board has received $1.4 million in new capital funding that will be used to deal with board-wide school renewal needs. Another $3 million will be used to look after space require-

The Kemptville Fire Department has won the Eastern Ontario Fire Fighters Games for the fourth year in a row. Next year, they will be hosting the games in Kemptville. The occasion will be special because the Kemptville team plans to set a record with another win. Five wins in a row has never been done before. The games in Kemptville in 2012 will also mark the 100th anniversary of the Eastern Ontario Fire Fighters Association. The games feature many of the same skills that firefighters have to use during an actual fire. Stamina, teamwork and in the end strength, all play a role in producing a winning team at the games and at a fire site. Race Day Captain Richard Aldham believes Kemptville can do it five years in a row. Starting their training as soon as the snow melts, the Kemptville team practices at least once a week to get ready for the competition. They get together more often as they get closer to the big day. “We go over all of the events,” said Aldham. Explaining that getting ready for the competition is not all about strength. The individual team members have to have a good attitude and be determined to work as a team. Having as many team members return each year is a plus for Kemptville. “You do have your key group,” said Aldham. “They know what jobs they are going to do.” This year, the Kemptville Fire Department was competing against 12 other area fire departments. In Kemptville, the construction of 21 additional classrooms will be completed and the board will have a 12-classroom addition at St. Thomas Catholic High School in Russell. The new budget allows for implementation of full day, everyday, junior and senior Kindergarten program beginning in September at 21 CDSBEO schools across the board. Class sizes will be reduced in grade 4 to 8 and the board will be able to maintain the provincially mandates primary class size. The budget also provides for funding for an additional ten minutes per week in elementary school teacher preparation time. There is also increased support for elementary teacher professional learning opportunities. Educational assistants get a few more hours to work with students with added funding and at the secondary school level, there will be funding to support locally developed strategies to expand programming. The CDSBEO is in the final year of a four-year collective agreement. Their budget has room to serve that obligation.

Good leadership is a must

Years ago, the subject of a failing Canadian healthcare system would create a huge debate. Universal healthcare was thought to be one of the iconic features of a truly Canadian institution. Every now and again, we all hear about how it has failed us all despite evidence to the contrary. Privatization of parts of our health care system becomes a hot topic every now and again but as usual, those proposing such a huge change in our national health care direction have a vested interest behind their pronouncements. In the end, we are all left more than a little breathless as we listen to one side of the healthcare issue or the other ramble on about what they think the answer is. One obvious solution to many of the ills our system is apparently suffering from is good leadership. An example of the effect good leadership can have on a healthcare provider is the healthy place the Kemptville District Hospital and the Winchester District Memorial Hospital find themselves. Rural hospitals, perhaps because of their size and the communities they serve, are in a perfect position to deliver on the promises they make to all of us. This past week, for example, the Win-

chester District Memorial Hospital offered their mighty cousin the Ottawa Hospital an invitation to be part of Winchester’s plan for a Centre of Excellence for Rural Health and Education. Driving the centre of excellence project are the hospital’s progressive and proactive board of directors and retiring hospital CEO Trudy Reid. The invitation to the Ottawa hospital is a way to grow the rural healthcare reality in a sustainable way. Instead of waiting for the province or Ottawa to impose some kind of healthcare solution, rural hospitals are suggesting their own version of what can and what cannot be done to further the protection and efficiency of rural healthcare. The ideas that our rural hospitals run with originate with the people and communities they serve. With the courage that good leadership brings to the table solutions are invariably found. Could the proper leadership be all that is missing from the health care debate? As simplistic as that may seem, we are hearing vague warnings about the impending collapse of health care while at the same time, rural hospitals are taking great strides towards solving so many health care issues.

Something else to blame on the cellphone It is a winding road of logic that leads to the conclusion that there would have been no riots in Vancouver if people still smoked, but you are patient people and the journey is an interesting one. Begin with a series of observations. At the gym, a man gets dressed after his workout, steps out into the lobby and takes out his cellphone. Coming out of a concert, a couple pauses outside the door while both people draw cellphones out of their pockets. Sitting alone in a restaurant, a woman toys with her phone while she waits. In a car stopped at a light, a man furtively checks his phone. Now, they may all have important calls to make, important messages to read, but what they are doing looks so much like smoking it’s spooky. When people used to smoke, that’s when they did it – coming out of a place where smoking was forbidden, such as a church or concert hall, sitting in the car, waiting alone for someone. Now they use the phone in the same situation – as a reward, as something to pass the time, as something to disguise the fact that they have nothing to do. Perhaps people don’t check their cellphones after sex, another stereotypical cigarette moment, but these days you

can never be too sure. Another classic cigarette moment that can’t be replicated with the cellphone is the act of picking up the phone. A lot of people used to light up when making a call. Picking up the phone while picking up the phone doesn’t make a lot of sense, although you wouldn’t put it past some people. With this incontrovertible evidence at hand, do we make the logical leap and blame the decline of the cigarette for the rise of the cellphone? Of course. Remember the Law of Unintended Consequences? It’s obviously at work here. We got rid, for the most part, of a habit that caused death and disease, both to practitioners and innocent bystanders. We rid our indoor spaces, not to mention our clothes, of vile smells and unbreathable air. So that was all good.

Our reward was the outbreak of another vice, less fatal and less smelly, but with social implications we are only now beginning to measure. Short attention spans, people seemingly talking to themselves on buses, customized ringtones interrupting plays and concerts, some very weird driving – we are familiar with all of these and the consequences are no mystery. We know far less about the consequences of everyone carrying a camera in their telephone. Thanks to the telephone camera, more people than ever before take photos. How does it affect people’s behaviour knowing that just about every person they meet is a photographer? Well, for many people, not enough. Celebrities seem to indulge in just as many colourful activities as before, their lapses in judgment captured by amateur cellphone paparazzi. People sleep on the job, drive and text while cellphone vigilantes point and click. So the cellphone camera seems to be no deterrent to bad behaviour. The question raised by the Vancouver riots is whether the cellphone camera actually encourages that behaviour. To watch the proceedings on live TV, you would certainly think so. Thug after

Who knows? What we do know, or at least suspect, is that the yahoos would not have been so enthusiastic had they not had a big audience. And the audience might have gone home, making the situation much more manageable, if they hadn’t had cellphone cameras and the urge to record history. Things would have been so much better, if all they’d done was stand around and smoke.

Community I don’t think there will be any changes in how things are done. There also appears to be a real lack of understanding and empathy regarding this issue. You may recall that Cranberry Hill’s 5 per cent parkland was re-zoned in 2009. What’s incredible about this case is that the developer Karl Norenberg of Norenberg Construction Ltd. was given almost 1 acre of land, which longtime resident Doug MacDonald swore under oath at last summer’s OMB hearing, was on the condition the meadows behind the little red school house remain an Open Space Area/Public Park. It’s worth noting this is the only 5 per cent parkland to be first zoned as Open Space/Parkland before being conveyed to the municipality, which leads me to believe this was indeed a unique situation. Sadly, those meadows are now under construction and are the future site of the controversial Scholar Heights subdivision. The green spaces policy

(memo dated April 27, 2010) states that the need for parks is greatest in the Urban Service Area, but it appears that the need for tax dollars for 20 or so properties is greater. The primary function for parkland in North Grenville is to 1-provide access and exposure to the Rideau river and South Branch, 2-establish recreation trails, 3-provide centralized recreation facilities. From 2006-10, at least $396,000 was spent on the expansion of South Gower’s soccer fields. In 2011, monies in the parkland reserve fund have been allocated to: 1-tennis court re-surfacing ($132,900); 2-South Gower soccer field washrooms ($45,000); 3-skateboard park surface ($53,000). Funds for greenspace have not been earmarked. Ironically the catchy “Green and Growing” tagline was adopted under exmayor Bill Gooch’s reign. Perhaps it’s time to start acting like a community that actually cares about greenspace. But then again, creating new parks

I sincerely hope an acceptable agreement is reached between the municipality and the residents in the Glengables subdivision who are expecting parkland. But the fact is, over the past 40 years or so, the municipality accepts 5 per cent parkland and then sells it. This practice has occurred seven out of 10 times, including partial sales. As per the Planning Act, this is legitimate, and no doubt, even warranted under exceptional circumstances. But here’s the thing. A developer has the option of providing land or cash for parkland. So, when folks are looking to buy a home and parkland is part of the sales pitch, one would expect this “commitment” to be fulfilled. This is not an unreasonable expectation, because traditionally, land conveyed to a municipality as parkland is done so in perpetuity. The countdown is on. In just a few nights, my daughter graduates from high school. I have been feeling rather weepy and discombobulated about the whole thing. My daughter knows this. And so what does she do about it? She takes advantage of my moment of weakness and, for the first time in her teenaged years, asks us to do something for her. She asks us to host the After-Grad Party at the farm. Oi-vay. How do we say no? That’s right. We don’t. We are somewhat honoured to have been asked. We say yes. But not right away. First, we called friends who had hosted after-grad in previous years. We got advice on how to orchestrate the whole event so that a good time is had by all, and everyone gets home safely. Mostly it’s about collecting car keys, parking cars where they cannot be easily retrieved (i.e. in the grazing pasture of a biting donkey and a charging ram) and setting up tents. Lots of tents. I have enlisted the help of a few of the other parents of graduates, in case I need drivers to transport partiers to their homes.

But I don’t think we really have much to worry about. We have a smart bunch of kids graduating this year. Actually, this generation seems to be much better at planning ahead and thinking things through than, for example, their parents were at the same age. I will be getting the Farmer to reinforce the gates to the barnyard so that no revelers end up on the manure side of the fence in the dark. I don’t want anyone getting stepped on by a horse – or attempting to ride her. Paulina has asked some friends to come over to help set up on Wednesday morning. By the time this column is in print, the dance floor will be built, the tent over the dance floor will be erected, the porta-

pottie will be in place and the firewood will be neatly stacked next to the bonfire pit. Tiki torches will be installed around the yard and strings of lights will be hung from the trees to keep party guests from wandering into the stinging nettle in the dark. The graduating class of 2011 has compiled lists of music requests, and Paulina has spent the better part of a week downloading songs. I suggested we set up a karaoke machine. I don’t think she heard me. The kids (can I still call them that?) have their own ideas about how to celebrate the end of their high school careers. In order to recognize certain students’ unique contributions to high school life, awards will be presented. I imagine they will bear the titles: Best Dressed; Drama Queen; Teacher’s Pet; Class Clown, etc. But I could be wrong. They have their own special memories, their own achievements to celebrate, their own shared experiences to commemorate at their 2011 After-Grad Oscars. This is their night. We are just the ones honoured to be hosting for them, giving them a safe place to celebrate friendships, the end of one phase of their lives and the beginning of the next. I just hope Paulina gets home from Wonderland in time to help me set up those tiki torches or the Farmer is going to be grumpy.

A lifetime of observing, measuring and understanding how machines work has given Bill Zandbelt a unique and interesting perspective on all things mechanical. He has used his talent and experience to create precise wooden models of most kinds of farm equipment, as well as hand carving a variety of subjects from logging chains to ducks. Behind each and every one of his projects is an interesting story. Told with a sense of humour and a wealth of detail, Zandbelt fascinates listeners with his description of how and why he built each piece. On most Saturday mornings, he can be found tending to his priceless collection of wooden models and carvings at 504 St. Lawrence Street in Winchester. The former store right next to the Sweet Corner Park has become, for the time being, a kind of annex to the Osgoode Township Historical Museum in Vernon. The items in the room are not for sale but make for wonderful conversation. If visitors want, they can leave behind something for the food bank. Along with the hundreds of wooden models that originated with his ingenuity and skilled hands, artifacts from the museum are displayed in the newly and beautifully renovated space. One fascinating item is a model of Zandbelt’s boyhood farm. The original barn was destroyed by fire twice. It was built in 1895 and contains the memories and history of his family. Bill was the oldest of eleven children growing up in Holland during the Second World War. His reconstruction of the barn that was home to his family and cows and horses is exact. The barn was typical of those found on farms in that era. The family had rooms right in the building and Bill has recreated his boyhood home right down to the adult and children’s outhouse seats in the family outhouse. The barn has a history

Carving wooden chains is a fun and relaxing pastime for Bill Zandbelt. all of its own. Bill remembers the day the German army arrived at his home. “It was 7 a.m.,” he recalls. “German troops came in and told us all to get out. We threw a couple of bags of grain on our wagon and left.” Unknown to the German troops, the Zandbelt

and German snipers wanted to use the farm to fire down on the Allies. In the end, the Allies burned the barn down in order to stop the shooting. When the family returned several days later, there was nothing left. As Zandbelt describes those times when he was

The barn has details fresh from the builder’s boyhood memories. family had been hiding four people in their home. The reason why they had to leave was because the Allied armies, who were fighting their way through Holland, were just down the road. The Zandbelt farm overlooked the road,

just 15 years old, he points out the many features of barn. “I have all those memories in my head,” he said. An example of the detail he has been able to recreate is the Mortise and Tenon joints that, in those

days, were used to support the barn roof. Zandbelt worked at the Metcalfe Service Centre for years after coming to Canada from Holland in 1961 with his wife Wilma. The couple raised five boys and along the way, Bill honed his engineering and mechanical skills on farm machinery. When it was time to retire, he continued to work at the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa, repairing and restoring farm equipment. His natural inclination to wonder how the world works and his ability to re-create machines with his hands got the better of him. Eventually woodcarving captured his attention, and not one to turn away from a challenge, he acquired a new skill. “I really wanted to build machines,” said Zandbelt, as he explains how he made molds for the different moving parts of a small hot air engine and how he put it all together. The finished pump sits to one side of a display table in the space on St. Lawrence Street. The table is covered with working wooden models of cars, tractors, steam shovels, trucks and in one corner of the room, a train. Over time, he collected several old gasoline engines. His focus changed one day when he encountered the craft of woodcarving. “I went to a steam engine show in Kars one day,” he remembers. “There was a fellow from Lanark who had a display of chains all carved in wood. I was fascinated.” He could not resist the challenge, and just as he instinctively explored the workings of complicated farm equipment and wooden models, he decided to unravel the secret to carving wooden chains. But but there was not enough time in his life at that time to follow up on learning how to carve. “I promised myself I would learn how after I retired,” said Zandbelt. When retirement actually came along, he was ready to fulfill the promise he had made to himself. “I got a logging chain

and studied it,” said Zandbelt. “I put a stick alongside it and started carving.” What he discovered was that the challenge of hand carving a wooden lookalike of the logging chain was something he enjoyed. “I liked doing it. I could do that all the time,” he said.

Since then he has mastered the secret to carving wooden chains of all kinds. He finds the carving relaxing, and just as important, it allows him to use his life-long mechanical experience to build and shape, with his hands, wooden treasures.

The group met every Monday and rejoiced over progress reports and photos of smiling children in donated school uniforms. Stover even traveled to Kenya to see the positive results for himself. But on Stover’s most recent trip last August, everything was different. Youth soccer teams that once wore NGDHS jerseys were in disarray, and the nursery where children had received free meals and social programs was shuttered. Most shockingly, the land that Sarah’s HOPE had sent money for the nursery to buy and turn into a market garden didn’t exist. The group’s main contact in Pick Your Own Kenya, a man who for years had dutifully sent the students proof

of their good work, had vanished, along with all the money. After years of hard work and growth, it was a huge setback. Despite every effort to be accountable, these things sometimes happen to even the most high profile charities. But that didn’t comfort Stover, who wrestled with one big question during the long flight home: how would he tell the kids? It turns out he needn’t have worried. Current and past members were shocked and disappointed at this betrayal of their trust, but they were hardly ready to throw in the towel. Instead, they focused on the many children they had helped feed and educate over the years, and decided to partner with an established organization that would ensure credibility at home and accountability on the ground. This spring, the group placed its hope in Moving Mountains Trust (MMT), a UK-based charity that like Sarah’s HOPE believes in forging personal connections

MMT enthusiastically welcomed Sarah’s HOPE as a partner, and found a project, rebuilding the Gatwe Primary School in a small community outside of Embu, Kenya, that aligned with the school’s interests. MMT will be the eyes and ears on the ground to ensure everything remains above board. “It’s like we’re starting all over again, because there’s mud floors, (and) a lot of the kids don’t have shoes,” Stover said of their new school. “For me, it’s an incredible feeling because I thought, wow, maybe we can in one sense do it a bit differently and do it right, and see the culmination of the kids’ hard work.” The school community has forgiven the group, as evidenced by the successful benefit concert in late May that raised $3,000 for the new project. The group is made up of 15 to 20 core members from Grades 9 to 12, plus many other recurring volunteers who help organize the annual benefit concert and indoor soccer tournament. Grade 11 students Taylor Aitken and Emma Rudolf, recruited from Stover’s biology class, embody the resilience of the new Sarah’s HOPE. “As a student you’re always thinking about me – what do I need to get done, what do I want to do? But Sarah’s HOPE is about everyone coming together and working as

a team,” said Aitken. The two friends make promotional videos and promote the group in the wider community. “Being a student in Canada, we have everything, and we take everything for granted. If we need help, the doors are open and everything is given to us. And if we make a bad decision, there are people that can put us on the right path,” Rudolf said. “But when Mr. Stover tells us stories about these children, we realize that these people have nothing, and that we can actually make a big difference in someone else’s life, and be that person to help point them in the right direction.” To this point, the group has raised about $5,000 annually. To fund their new school, they’ll need four times that. “We know we can do it,” Aitken said, pointing out that even one dollar a month per student, or one less pizza slice at lunch, goes a long way. The recent benefit concert drew 200 people, mostly family and friends, but “we know we can do better,” Rudolf said. The group is helping build a new school in Kenya just as NGDHS prepares to move to its new building in 2012. The new school will have a permanent Sarah’s HOPE display near the front entrance to show visitors what North Grenville students are all about.

Many parents and children took part in the run before heading over to the Kemptville Ribfest, organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville. I love running and I want to instill the excitement of running in my girls,” he said. UCDSB goes for a Fun Run in Kemptville

Big Sky Ranch ready for AnimalFest Families and animal lovers are in for a good time – by helping out a good cause – at the 7th annual AnimalFest. The biggest fundraiser of the year for Big Sky Ranch Animal Sanctuary in Kemptville, this year’s AnimalFest will be held at Kemptville’s new Walmart just off Hwy. 416 on County Road 43. Admission is free. The fun takes place Saturday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children can enjoy pony rides and learn about some of Big Sky’s

resident animals up close and personal at the educational animal display. Everyone will be amazed at the talent displayed at the Shakea-Paw dog agility show and the OPP K9 unit demonstrations. There’s also the Hwy. 43 classic car show, live music and vendors. Local animal rescue organizations will be on location, there will be a silent auction as well as carnival games and midway treats for the kids.

Kemptville’s M&M Meat Shops has organized a charity barbecue for the event, and there will be plenty of other treats too. A registered Canadian charity since 2002 devoted to giving abused, unwanted and adoptable animals a second chance of a lifetime, Big Sky Ranch has provided more than 1,600 animals with a happy and healthy outcome through its rehabilitation and extremely successful adoption program. Because Big Sky Ranch relies

entirely on the generosity of the public – without receiving any government grants or funding, or charging membership – every dollar raised goes directly to the cost of rehabilitating and caring for these animals, aside from a minimal amount required for administration. Over the years, more than 30 young offenders from Ottawa, Brockville and Kemptville have been directed to Big Sky Ranch by the courts and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to per-

LEGION ON GUARD FOR COMMUNITY At a recent meeting, Ruth Garrett of Kemptville Royal Canadian Legion Branch 212 presented cheques to three local groups, along with $1,500 to the Legion Army Cadet Corps and $2,000 to Kemptville District Home Support. Pat Schafer accepted $3,000 on behalf of North Grenville Accessible Transportation, money he said is particularly needed as the group faces a serious funding crisis. The Legion gave $3,000 from its poppy fund to the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation, which follows a $7,500 gift to KDH from the provincial Legions that went toward purchasing a new trauma stretcher for the ER. Finally, the Legion gave $1,500 to the Sea Cadets of the Navy League of Canada, represented by president Donovan Arnaud (pictured).

Dear sister of Meinrad of Brooks Alberta, Gerald of Owen Sound and Bertram of Toronto. On January 19 1948 Sylvie was born in Karlsruhe Germany to August Pfeil and Lydia Geiger. In 1951 Sylvia’s family immigrated to Canada settling in the small town of Markham Ontario. She received her schooling at St. Patricks and St. Josephs before going to Toronto to receive her degree in education. On August the 15th 1970, she married the man of her dreams, Tony Gundy, who whisked her away to a new life of adventure, teaching on the Island of Moose Factory for the next seven years. When it was time for her children to start school, the family headed south to Oxford Mills where they had purchased a farm. For the next seven years Sylvie remained home to raise her children and “enjoy” the challenges the farm had to offer. In 1984 Sylvia returned to teaching, a profession she thoroughly enjoyed, and ﬁnished her career at Oxford on the Rideau Public School. Our family would like to thank all the professional people who provided Sylvie and her family with excellent care and support during her 20-month battle with brain cancer: Dr. Gary Blake, Dr. Stan Gertler, all the nurses at the Ottawa Civic, General, and Kemptville Hospitals, and Virgina Segovia ( from C.C.A.C.) Thank you to all our friends and neighbours who visited and stood by Sylvie, you are the true example of what a friend should be. God Bless you all. A beautiful funeral was held at Holy Cross Church on June 10th celebrating the life of a truly “one of a kind “woman.
