SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK The soothsayer (Stewart Matthews) portends tragedy with a side of laughter during a performance of Antony and Cleopatra by Ottawa-based theatre troupe A Company of Fools before over 100 thoroughly entertained playgoers at Swing Bridge Park in Burritt’s Rapids last Saturday. Well-placed ad-libs turned one of the Bard’s more political history plays into a delightfully campy Roman romp.

It’s no hay day this summer as area farmers deal with drought-like conditions while they attempt to harvest enough hay, corn and soybeans to make it through the season. A very wet spring morphed into an incredibly dry summer, leaving hay especially thirsting for a rainfall and leaving corn and soybean crops bone dry at a critical time of their development. “August is when corn builds the cob, so if you’ve got a moisture problem it’s going to affect the yield,” explained Brent Taylor, president of the Ottawa Federation of Agriculture. Soybeans are in a similar situation, as August is when the pods are filled. “You can see the corn plants already experiencing the moisture stress. The lower leaves are already brown, so we know they’re under drought stress.” For hay farmers, the first cut harvest around June 1 was excellent after such a wet spring. However, second hay cuts were dismally short and the third cut is looking even worse, said Oskar Zollinger, a Winchester farmer who contracts his baling and cutting machines to area farmers to help harvest their hay. “We were very pleased with the first cut, but farmers are extremely disappointed with the second cut and the same with the third. We got barely an inch of rain for the second cut and just about an inch for the third,” he said. Where a farmer can usually harvest two and a half large square bales out of an acre on the second cut, some farmers in the Winchester and Kemptville areas were only able to scrape together a fraction of that, Zollinger said.

Vintage tractor traces a family’s past Canadian Beef... It’s All We Sell!

J.P. ANTONACCI jp.antonacci@metroland.com

Over his three decades as an auctioneer, Ken Finnerty has seen all manner of remarkable items dropped off at his auction house on Tophmar Drive in Kemptville. But the classic red tractor that pulled up on a flatbed three years ago threw him for a loop. He was told that this piece of vintage farm equipment had been sold to a farmer in Spencerville more than 60 years prior by Finnerty’s father, who owned W.H. Finnerty’s Cockshutt Machinery Dealer at the corner of Prescott and Clothier streets. The tractor, a 1939 Cockshutt 60 Standard, was in remarkably good shape. The hard-back metal seat was still attached, and the original red paint gleamed.

Finnerty has heard more than a few tall tales about the supposed treasures that land on his doorstep, and at first he was skeptical that the sturdy machine really came out of his father’s store. But he looked into it and found that the elder Finnerty had indeed sold the tractor in 1940 or ’41, shortly after it rolled out of the factory, likely Frost and Wood in Smiths Falls.

“It’s not the very first one my dad ever sold, but it was made the year he opened the business,” he said. Finnerty decided that this special item wasn’t for sale. Instead, the tractor sits in the yard outside the auction house. The busy auctioneer – who also serves as North Grenville’s deputy mayor – is researching how to faithfully restore it and replace some of the missing parts with authentic substitutes. And he has help. Finnerty’s 10year-old grandson, Kyler Render, can’t wait to get behind the wheel and take one of his great-grandfather’s tractors for a spin. “If I put a charger on it, you could drive it,” Finnerty said. “It just needs a few minor alterations to get it back to the original state.” Kyler, the youngest of Finnerty’s 10 grandchildren, is an avid athlete who often helps his grandparents at their popular Friday night auctions. When he saw the tractor and learned where it came from, he urged his grandfather not to sell it. “I told him, ‘I didn’t plan on it. I was going to give it to you,’” Finnerty recalled, smiling. Finnerty remembers visiting his father at the machinery shop as a youngster, and watching the tractor parts come into town on railcars. The machines were assembled behind the shop, which was located where the Clothier Mills Inn stands today. After a lifetime spent working in his hometown, Finnerty is glad that his grandson can see and touch a piece of their family history. The veteran appraiser knows that kind of experience is priceless.

While discussions about its future continue, plans for the shortterm usage of the former Kemptville fire hall were clarified at last Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. Starting Sept. 1, the Navy League of Canada will use the historic fire hall, a former army barracks, as headquarters for Kemptville’s Sea Cadets. The Navy League, represented by president Donovan Arnaud, had been in talks to lease the fire hall from the municipality and rent out meeting and storage space to other service groups and community organizations. Instead, the municipality will remain the landlord, and the League will pay monthly rent to have the cadets meet and march in the hall several times per week. That works for the Navy League, says Arnaud, since the municipality will manage the building and pay for utilities and maintenance. “We’re very pleased, and we’re very grateful to council, and particularly to (CAO) Andy Brown and his officials. I want to make special mention of him, because he’s been totally cooperative and very understanding and supportive,” Arnaud said. “Basically, this arrangement buys us some time,” Brown told Committee of the Whole, adding that the municipality will contact the groups Arnaud had already approached about leasing the space. The idea was floated at the meeting that the Kinsmen Farmer’s Market could lengthen its season and possibly open on multiple days by housing vendors inside the fire hall. Old Town businesses could also set up stalls to attract shoppers, while artists could establish studio and display space inside the hall. The hall could also host live theatre or movies. Though not completely out of the running, council’s support – which was lukewarm at best – for a proposal from Habitat for Humanity 1000 Islands to turn the fire hall into a Restore seems to have dwindled. Councillors have expressed a preference to keep the fire hall as a community space. But there is disagreement over the financing. The municipality’s original request for proposals called for interested parties to cover all costs, as well as pay roughly $10,000 in annual rent. The Habitat for Humanity and Navy League bids fell well short of the desired amount. Coun. Terry Butler said he was “very excited” that “a valuable asset” was staying in the municipal fold. He said he is comfortable with the municipality covering some of the maintenance costs, preferring to view the fire hall as

Ken Finnerty recommends that a landlord be found to handle leasing arrangements and maintain the building, which has a mould problem in the basement that would have to be sealed off or cleaned at a cost of approximately $15,000. Though he agrees that the community should be able to access the fire hall, Coun. Tim Sutton acknowledged the financial reality. “If we can’t find the people to build the cash flow we need, we’re going to have a decision to make,” he told council.

an investment whose return will be realized over time. “I certainly would have the patience to make it work. Not everything is about dollars and cents, either. There’s the cultural aspect,” he said in an interview, adding that the artists who set up their wares and gave demonstrations in the fire hall during the Dandelion Festival were very well received by tourists. Time to shine, North Grenville

Later this month, the TVO program Giver will spend six days in North Grenville. While they will primarily be filming the construction of a new skatepark in Riverside Park and a fitness trail in South Gower Park, the director of the playground makeover reality series will no doubt echo others in the genre by taking some contextual footage of the community. TVO estimates that Giver will draw between 100,000 and 120,000 viewers per minute during its six-year syndication. All told, millions of people – and potential tourists – will get what is likely their first look at North Grenville courtesy of the show. What will they see? Will they see a community that takes pride in its people, culture, natural beauty and streetscapes? Or will they see a place where tidying up after oneself is a task left to others? In September, the municipality will discuss the recommendations of the First Impressions Community Exchange report, of which façade improvement is near the top of the list. This is good news. But a promotional opportunity such as this TV show might never come again. By the time the cameras start rolling, Old

Town and all of North Grenville should look as clean and attractive as possible. We’re not calling for full-scale renovations. We only have two weeks. But that is plenty of time to pull weeds, wash windows, rip down old posters, and do the little things that will make our community shine. Let’s not worry about whose job it is, or who will pay for the Windex. Instead, let’s capitalize on this good fortune and cause a traffic jam on the 416 as impressed tourists from across the province come to visit. The ingredients for a cleaning blitz are already in place. Community Living volunteers do an excellent job tidying the streets. The Horticultural Society would love to fill vacant planters with beautiful flowers. And surely businesses could spare an employee for an hour or two to clean up their storefronts. If not, students can always use back-to-school cash. When the TV crews arrive, the Advance office on Prescott Street will be free of weeds, our storefront will be tidy and well-organized, and our windows will sparkle. We invite and hope our neighbours will also set aside a little time to ensure North Grenville presents its best face to the world.

The skinny on gluten Flatulence has no place in a marriage, or so a recently wedded friend tells me. She came to visit from out of town. Like so many women before her, she bemoaned falling victim to the post-honeymoon, early-thirties weight gain that afflicts so many of us. This is a woman who attends twice-weekly boot camp, religiously goes to the gym, and clocks up to 17,000-steps a day at work on her pedometer. If she’s bloated and farting in bed, what hope is there for the rest of us? As it turns out, there is hope. Working closely with a physical trainer and dietician in June, my friend’s long-held suspicion that she may have a wheat sensitivity has been confirmed. Within weeks of eliminating wheat and other products containing gluten from her diet, she has passed wind significantly less often and, more importantly, shed a few pounds. “About 15-20 per cent of my clients have a wheat or gluten sensitivity,” says Kathy Smart, an Ottawa-based nutritional consultant. “Even if you’re not celiac – which is a whole different thing – ingesting gluten may cause digestion issues, skin issues, fatigue, and it can affect metabolism.”

BRYNNA LESLIE Capital Muse

Smart, who advises a number of Ottawa organizations, including local grocery chain Farm Boy, on how to prepare food for specialized diets, says the recognition of gluten sensitivity has started to enter the mainstream consciousness. A certified holistic teaching chef, Smart is releasing her fourth cookbook this month, with over 60 healthy recipes, all of them gluten-free. She’s also launching Ottawa’s first gluten-free cooking show on Rogers in October. “Within the last five years gluten sensitivity has become a lot more prominent,” says Smart. “More celebrities have come out in support of a glutenfree diet, and medical doctors are seeing patients who’ve been complaining of various problems for 20 years feel better when they eliminate gluten from their

diets.” Besides the metabolic drag that gluten sensitivity can trigger, focusing on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains like rice as part of a gluten-free diet also make it easier to lose weight, if that’s your goal. A lot of processed foods, including instant gravies, soya sauce and certain spice blends contain gluten, so it’s best to read labels as you reach for these seemingly harmless items. “It’s really about getting back to food in its natural state,” explains Smart. “We were never really meant to eat cookies, cakes and breads to that extent in the first place.” If you can’t see giving up baked treats anytime soon, it’s worth noting that a number of gluten-free flours and alternatives are showing up amidst traditional products on grocery shelves. But baker beware: Cooking with gluten-free flour is a bit of a science. I found out the hard way when my friend was here. Eager to be a good host, I had picked up a bag of all-purpose gluten-free flour, determined to make pancakes from scratch. The end product was flat and dry – anything but appetizing – not to mention the fact that the kids required a steak knife to get through the quar-

Also, try not to let the products sit out on the counter for too long once they come out of the oven. lucky, they are born during the Christmas holidays, when it isn’t quite as cold. Ideally, we have lambing season orchestrated to happen in April through May. But the ram decided to play a trick on us this year, and impregnated a ewe in April (must have been one of the ones who gave birth at Christmas – or didn’t get asked to dance at all last winter). The other day the Farmer noticed an ewe with a particularly bulging udder. Sure enough, yesterday morning, we heard the unmistakable sound of a newborn lamb crying for its mother. The little one was standing outside the barn, near Chelsea’s doghouse. He appeared to be attempting to communicate with the sheepdog. The Farmer and I looked around for the ewe. Eventually the new mama was found in the barn, where she was attempting with great difficulty to give birth to another lamb. The Farmer, who was already in his university professor garb (save the rubber footwear), squatted down in his

The Accidental Farmwife Diana Fisher dress pants and reached up inside the ewe to deliver the lamb. I kept thinking thank goodness it’s short sleeve season. That at least might save his shirt. A few agonizing minutes later he was still groping around in the ewe, attempting to reposition the surprisingly large lamb so that he could deliver it. Sweat was pouring down his face from the effort. The first lamb settled down in front of his mother’s nose, in silent reverence. The ewe bore down and grunted with discomfort. I held her head still so she wouldn’t

try to get up. I also held my breath, I think. Finally, my husband delivered the forelegs and gave a gentle tug. The lamb slid out onto the barn floor, looked up at us and blinked. “It’s alive!” I shouted. “That’s amazing,” the Farmer agreed. The lamb probably suffered some oxygen deprivation while stuck in the birth canal but hopefully we got it out in time so the damage isn’t permanent. I actually managed to milk that ewe so that I could feed 50 mls of the valuable colostrum to the lamb. It had a strong sucking reflex, which is good. Typically the weak lambs just loll their tongues around and don’t take a bottle very well. Later that first day the weak lamb greeted me when I entered the pen. He tried in vain to gather his limbs under him to stand. He took another 20 mls colostrum but I didn’t think he’d make it if I couldn’t get him to get up. This morning, the lamb

was on his feet. The Farmer gave it a shot of vitamins and selenium, and advised me to mix a bottle of milk replacer. Again the lamb greeted me as I entered the pen. He was lying in a corner by himself. His mother seems to be trying not to get too attached to him, which is often the case with sickly animals. The lamb took the bottle with a suction that was quite impressive. He drank 350 mls

487351-32-11

Our rams, left to their own devices and sense of seasonal timing, always want to begin the mating rituals when the weather turns cooler in early August. As soon as we catch them in this annual dance, we lure them into the barn and lock them up in a pen until December. If we don’t, we’ll have full-on lambing season in January–February. And trust me, that sucks. Lambing season in February is depressing. The lambs are so busy fighting the cold that if they aren’t the strongest of the bunch, they don’t make it. Also, as sheep farmers we are wise to stay home during lambing season. That makes it very difficult to take a vacation on the university reading week if we’ve got “lambs on the ground” in February. We always miss the first couple of “dances” in August, however, before we catch the rams and put them away. As a result, we always end up with a few lambs in the barn in the middle of winter. If we’re

of the stuff ! Then he stood for just a moment, all by himself. He may make it after all. I hope the Farmer doesn’t take this midseason miracle to mean he can have our ewes giving birth twice a year. And just to be sure, I’m putting a calendar on the wall of the barn so Rambo doesn’t forget what month it is, and when he is supposed to be doing his business.

Kemptville hockey star skates with the pros J.P. ANTONACCI jp.antonacci@metroland.com

Eric Cornel is living the dream. Last week, the 15-year-old Kemptville resident got an education like no other at an elite hockey camp in Mississauga, ON. Cornel was one of 42 bantam all-stars selected from across the country to spend five days skating alongside current NHL players and learning the ins and outs of nutrition, fitness and sports psychology at the inaugural Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Camp. “It’s been a really incredible experience having these NHL guys here to show us some stuff, Cornel said during a phone interview after a stick-handling tutorial with Ottawa Senators star Jason Spezza

and reigning rookie of the year Jeff Skinner at the Hershey Centre. The intensive camp was hosted by Gary Roberts, a 21-year NHL veteran and fitness guru who now spends the offseason putting current NHLers like Skinner and Steve Stamkos through their paces at the Gary Roberts High Performance Centre in Toronto. The young players were told to focus on working hard on the ice and in the gym to “strategically prepare to play at the highest level. “Off-ice, they’ve taught us so much about nutrition. Gary Roberts is a big believer in good nutrition, and I think I can really benefit from learning what sort of lifestyle these professional hockey players live, Cornel said.

Roberts showed the players how to mimic on-ice movements during off-ice workouts, something Cornel plans to incorporate into his offseason training. The group also explored the mental side of sports with noted sports psychologist Paul Dennis. “He taught us that confidence is really important in sports, and it’s really important to always have positive thoughts towards yourself. Even some pros will talk to themselves and make sure they’ve blocked out the negative side and just work on the job that needs to be done on the ice, Cornel said. Last season, Cornel played centre for the OEMHL AAA Upper Canada Cyclones. He was protected in the 2011 CCHL draft by the Kemptville 73’s, which means he can

At camp, the St. Michael’s CHS student learned strategies to handle the ever-increasing pressure athletes feel. “They say that you need to try to take the pressure that you put on yourself and other people put on you and turn it into motivation, and just trying to be the best that you can be every day, on and off the ice,â€? he explained. In a statement, Roberts said he was excited to share the health and nutrition knowledge that helped him achieve success and longevity in his career. “Our on and off-ice training programs have been carefully developed to demonstrate how elements like nutrition, fitness and mental health can give these players an edge over their competition. Learning this early in their development will provide them with infinite benefits throughout their careers,â€? Roberts said. Several NHL stars and alumni met with the players in small groups to talk about life lessons the game teaches, the importance of personal responsibility and community involvement, and how to prepare for a successful life after hockey. Cornel had no idea he was being scouted for the camp when organizers notified him of his selection in the spring. “It was kind of shocking, but I was very excited to go,â€? he remembers. The Senators fan was thrilled to be named to Team Spezza for the Mentorship Cup that ended the camp on Saturday. The young centre squared off against his new friends on Team Schenn, coached by Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn, in a game broadcast on TSN. Along with working on his game and improving his approach to training, Cornel enjoyed seeing friends from other teams in Ontario and Quebec, and meeting players from eastern and western Canada. His parents, Robert and Heidi, and his brother and sister enjoyed the week with him. “It’s nice to share the experience with them,â€? he said. In 30 games with Cyclones last season, Cornel scored 21 goals with 40 assists. He considers himself a team player and playmaker with good offensive skills. “I’d like to work on playing a little more defensively‌The defensive side is crucial to winning games,â€? he said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Theft of painting unacceptable After reading the article in the July 21 edition of The Advance on Donna Wiegand’s painting being stolen from the Municipal Centre, I was much disheartened and frustrated. I felt that a much too “light view was taken over the incident. How despicable, and bold of the thief to steal from a public place, apparently without a care for the owner of the work. Creating is an artist’s passion – time and energy, heart and soul go into the things they produce – not to mention the financial investment. They contribute to the culture of a community and in showing their work, create an esthetically pleasing environment for the general public. This specifically is the purpose of the display at our Mu-

nicipal Centre and it has now been put at risk. North Grenville has a vibrant artistic community. Their rewards are small and the financial payback minimal. So what can be done about this unacceptable behavior? Everyone could be more vigilant – not just at the Municipal Centre but everywhere. A limited number of persons are allowed to remove the artwork (for this very reason). If you see anything suspicious, question the activity, or report it, including if you should see Wiegand’s painting in a private location. Carol Pillar Kemptville

RVCA celebrates watershed’s four millionth tree STAFF In the mid-1970s governments began to realize the importance of renewing natural resources such as trees. Taking up the challenge, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) set out to plant as many trees in their catchment area as they could. This year the group celebrates a milestone with the planting of its four millionth tree since the tree planting program started in 1983. A small ceremony was held on July 12 at the home of Dawn and Kent Daniels, located just outside North Gower. The Daniels are landowners who have recently participated in the program with the planting of over 12,000 trees. “The Conservation Authority and its member municipalities are committed to our tree planting programs,” said Alan Arbuckle, RVCA chair. “We are delighted to work with landowners, like the Daniels, in our continuing campaign to green the Rideau watershed. The Daniels have participated in two planting projects – the first in 2008 with the planting of 8,000 seedlings and the second in 2011 with the planting of 4,000 seedlings. They are just one the many landowners from across the Rideau watershed who have contributed to the success of the program. The RVCA tree planting program helps

landowners reforest larger parcels of idle or marginal lands with native Canadian trees. There are very generous incentive grants available that can reduce landowner costs by up to 90 per cent, including the cost of tree seedlings, site preparation, and planting and tending the young trees. The program also provides landowners with technical advice and guidance. “A single tree is a little environmental cleaning station,” said Smiths Falls councillor and RVCA board member Ken Graham. “It cleans the air, provides wildlife habitat and helps prevent soil erosion. Multiply one tree by four million and you have some very significant community benefits for a long time for a small investment.” “The City of Ottawa is delighted to be part of this long-term investment in our green infrastructure,” said Coun. Scott Moffatt. “Over 2.5 million trees have been planted in the City of Ottawa alone – that means over 1,070 hectares of land have been converted back into thriving forests.” Although staff just finished their 2011 tree planting, there is no rest. Now is the time to prepare for the 2012 planting season. Any rural landowner with one acre of land or more and a commitment to order a minimum of 500 trees is encouraged to call the RVCA for more information at 613-692-3571 or 1-800-267-3504.

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK Finn Passmore, 6, puts the finishing touches on a relief of a fish he carved from a block of Indiana limestone at the Milk and Mallets stone carving festival during Dairyfest 2011, held in Winchester from Aug. 4-7. Returning to Dairyfest for the second consecutive year, Milk and Mallets attracted 25 sculptors and stone carvers from across Ontario and Quebec, including many students or recent graduates from Algonquin College’s Heritage Masonry program in Perth. The completed sculptures were auctioned on Sunday night and raised $2,000 for Winchester’s Downtown Revitalization Committee. 480900

Weather becomes economoic factor in price of hay

Continued from the front

“I am having them have half a bale per acre, and that’s a real disappointment,” he said. Even more frustrating for local farmers is that this is not a widespread phenomenon. In Westport just two hours south-west, farmers have enjoyed much more rain and are baling in the profits. Zollinger said he expects the price of hay to skyrocket this summer as cattle and dairy farmers get ready for the win-

ter. “Dairy farmers are in desperate need of very good hay to make it through the winter. Hay is going to be extremely expensive. It’s already pretty high.” A large bale, which can hold about 18 small bales, sells at its cheapest for about $35, Zollinger said. Currently they are selling for $45 or $50, and he thinks it’s on its way up. Taylor, however, was hesitant to pro-

claim rising hay prices, because June’s harvest was so strong. “I don’t think so, because of the fact that there is a lot of first cut hay. We had lots of moisture early in the season and so the first cut was heavy,” he said. If the prices do go up, the news is not as welcome as you might expect for those selling hay. “The price is high but you don’t have the volume. You should have two or three times more,” Zollinger said.

In between all the concerts, games, contests, exhibits and food, regular attendees at the South Mountain Fair have at some point likely thought to themselves, “All that’s missing is a parade!” Well strike up the band, because this year’s four-day summer extravaganza presented by the Mountain Township Agricultural Society will feature a parade through town on Aug. 20. Anyone is welcome to join the procession; registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at Nationview Public School. The parade is just one highlight of the 119th edition of the popular summer fair, which takes place at the South Mountain Fairground at 2967 Lough Rd. from Aug. 18 to 21. Many favourite events from fairs past are back again this year, with a Thursday night horse pull and Friday night demoli-

tion derby sure to get equine and human hearts pumping. A wide range of agricultural exhibits and contests ensures there is something fun for everyone. To get the party started, fairgoers can unleash their inner rock stars at Jamie Jarvo’s Karaoke Dance Party on Friday night from 9 a.m. into the wee hours of the morning. Country stars Dean Brody (8 p.m.) and Ambush (10 p.m.) take to the stage Saturday night, followed by the sweet sounds of Lorrie Morgan and Gail Gavan & The Ryan Brothers on Sunday. For those in need of a spiritual breather, there will be a church service at the Agricultural Hall entrance on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Not content to offer one of the region’s most famous and beloved fairs year after year, organizers have arranged for a raft of brand new entertainment on Aug. 20 sure to appeal to young and old.

The day kicks off at 8:30 with a motorcycle, car and truck parade. The tricked out and shined up vehicles will make their way to the fairground for a 10 a.m. ‘sho-n-shine.’ At high noon, a gang of mean-looking “wrasslers” from Professional Championship Wrestling will descend on South Mountain for a bone-crunching bout dubbed the Rumble in the Fair Grounds. For a more lighthearted competition, at 2 p.m. teams of three will compete in the Farmer Olympics. It will take speed and agility to maneuver through the agricultural obstacle course. Register early and practice hard for your chance to win the prize for the best time. If that sounds too complicated, wait an hour and try your luck at the wife-carrying competition at 3 p.m., where entrants will carry their wives, girlfriends or ‘lady friends’ through a challenging obstacle

The

course. The three fastest couples win prize money and gift certificates to Back in Motion, which might come in handy after all that lifting. The most entertaining couple, the couple with the best costume, and the strongest carrier will also receive prizes. The fair website advises that “The wife to be carried may be your own, the neighbour’s, or you may have found her on the corner; she must, however, be 18 years of age or over.” One-price admission, which includes unlimited Midway rides and entry to all concerts, dances, exhibits, agricultural shows and kids entertainment, is $20, $10 on Thursday. A four-day weekend pass is $50. For the full schedule, contest details and all other information, visit southmountainfair.ca or ask any veteran fair attendee for their recommendations. They won’t steer you wrong.
