Speedy response from North Grenville OPP resulted in the apprehension of three suspects in a break-in at a jewelry store in Old Town Kemptville last week. The suspects allegedly broke into Sugold Jewellers and Giftware at 107 Prescott St. in the early hours of Tuesday, Aug. 16, smashed a display case and made off with an estimated $5,000 worth of stock. By that same evening, the alleged perpetrators had been rounded up by the OPP. The thieves first tried to break in through a back window, but gave up when they realized it was barred. They then focused their efforts on the storefront facing Prescott Street. They broke a window beside the front door to gain access. The clock was ticking on the robbery. The alarm was tripped at 1:12 a.m., according to storeowner Su Sally and Falcon Security Company, which called police within 40 seconds. The police arrived by 1:16 a.m. and by 1:30 a.m. the canine unit and emergency response team were on the scene. The police dog picked up a scent, and officers recovered several pieces of jewelry while following the trail. After dawn, the identification unit spent much of the day gathering forensic evidence. Acting

on tips from witnesses, officers arrested the first suspect at a Thomas Street address just after 2:30 p.m. the same afternoon. Two additional suspects were arrested a few hours later. Adrien-Tyrone Bradley Beauchamps, age 18 of Kemptville, was charged with break and enter, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, and possession of a Schedule I drug. Brass knuckles and a quantity of Oxyconde were recovered by police. Nicholas Larocque, 19, of Kemptville was also charged with break and enter, as was Christopher Edward Joseph Thompson, 19, of North Grenville, who faces an additional charge of breach of probation. The three accused were released on bail and will appear in Kemptville court on Oct. 5. The majority of the jewelry– including several wristwatches, bracelets and a necklace–was recovered, though as of Monday Sally was still taking inventory. “I am overwhelmed by the response of the police,” said Sally last Wednesday morning. “I am very impressed with them. They were very thorough.” Sally estimated the repair bill for the damage would be in the Photo by Wade Worsley thousands of dollars. OPP Cst. nearby Giving Garden on County Road 43 to pick some tomatoes. He noticed that the shed used to store the garden’s tools was in need of repair. In fact, the shed has already blown down once this year, and is teetering on its last legs. Meunier decided to help. As a side business, the Oxford Mills resident makes and delivers sheds to order. Along with his grandson, nine-year-old Leighton Smith, Meunier built a sturdy new eight foot by eight foot tool shed out of frame siding and pine. After a few coats of paint and shingles for the roof, Meunier loaded the shed onto a trailer and delivered it to the garden free of charge on Aug. 13. Don Munz of the Giving Garden was bowled over by Meunier’s generosity. The shed, which normally sells for $1,150 plus delivery, is roomier and much sturdier than its predecessor, and will do a better job at keeping out moisture, Munz said. “I could live in this place!” he marveled inside the newly installed shed. Munz said the shed gives the garden twice the storage space, and when the existing shed does finally fall apart – Munz expects it won’t last another season – they already have the new one in place. Meunier had a simple explanation for his generosity. “I saw that they needed a shed, so I gave it to them,” he said. The craftsman, who makes sheds of varying sizes and specifications, can be reached at 258-5504. Munz invites the public to visit the garden and harvest vegetables. The potatoes are coming in nicely, and he hopes the green tomatoes still on the vine will soon find a home in many soups, sauces and sandwiches.

Having taken a first step in recognizing the need for an active economic development strategy, the Township of North Dundas is ready for their next move. Last week, North Dundas council approved the township’s new economic development work plan and on Aug. 17, economic development officer Rob Hunter shared the plan with the North Dundas Chamber of Commerce. The plan explained initiatives designed to position North Dundas for continued success and future growth. “I an encouraged to have the support of council,” said Hunter ,who is currently working on a community profile that will end up on the township’s website. He said that there have already been a few careful inquiries from various industries about the area. The different sectors being examined are:

Hunter explained that the United Counties of Stormont Dundas and Glengarry is in the process of creating their own economic development strategy. The work is expected to be completed by 2012. He suggested that North Dundas could take advantage of the fact that SD&G will have to hire a consultant to do the job and a partnership could be forged to help North Dundas finish off their own economic development plan. Hunter wants to be able to offer local business counseling services. Counseling could be done in partnership with the SD&G Business Enterprise centre. Like many rural municipalities North Dundas will have to look at business retention and expansion. The majority of new jobs created in a community come from existing businesses, Hunter pointed out.

Jack’s great hope Jack Layton died Monday, in the early hours of the morning. A giant, his fall was felt across the country. Canadians nationwide poured out their grief for Jack. The widespread admiration felt for him – some because of his views, some despite them – is among the man’s finest legacies. He is widely remembered as a fighter, a man of strong ideals, and a person you’d be happy to call your neighbour. Politicians of all stripes recalled their fondest memories and favourite qualities of the NDP leader, a true achievement in a climate pock-marked by partisanship. Though he couldn’t keep his promise to return to the House of Commons in September, he made another pact in his final message to us. In Parliament, it will be as powerful a presence as his empty seat. It was in his final letter that his great spirit shone brightest. For almost 30 years, from Toronto City Council to Parliament Hill, he chose his battles with his heart and fought them with limitless guts. Optimism and integrity are remembered as hallmarks of his career. In a letter to Canadians published hours

after his death, Jack wrote that hope is a precious commodity, and promised us we can change the world if only we believe in its power. Those who “are on journeys to defeat cancer and live their lives” must maintain their hope and determination, he wrote. “Don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped.” Those in his party he implored not to lose faith in their cause, but to recommit to it with even greater energy and determination. And to those young people, who look out at their futures and see an array of overwhelming challenges, who are engaging in politics with their dreams and frustrations, he implored them not to lose hope that they have the power to change the world for the better. But it was his final words – powerfully capped with the inclusive “We” – that touched so many, and will keep his spirit alive and fighting for years to come. “My friends,” Layton wrote. “Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”

The little things that make a city great There has been a series running the Citizen in recent days on the question of how Ottawa can become a greater city and why it hasn’t done so up to now. Various explanations have been put forward, among them the notion that the rest of Canada doesn’t like our city much. When used in headlines, the name “Ottawa” has become synonymous with bad news – bickering, scandal, ineptitude, government waste. Our city, it goes without saying, is not responsible for any of that. It just sits here and plays host to it. But people away from here, it is argued, take it out on us and are reluctant to be generous in supporting projects that would make the city greater. So it falls on government to do that. Aside from a few stunning examples in the last quarter century – the National Gallery, the War Museum, the Museum of Civilization – the government hasn’t done much. Ottawa’s City Hall is pretty nice and the new Convention Centre may turn out to be a fine addition. But these are mere dots on a larger and bleaker landscape. Is this because the rest of Canada hates us? Probably not. And it is prob-

ably not – at least not totally – because every decision here has to be approved by at least 93 levels of government. It is mostly because making a city great involves spending money. Governments spending money went out of style many years ago. So that leaves us a bit with our hands tied as far as making Ottawa a great city is concerned. It is apparently on us, our little individual selves, to do the job. We’ll do what we can, rake the lawn and hang flags out the window, but it is unlikely that true civic greatness lies in this direction. We have to wait for government spending – and, of course, taxes – to come back into fashion before anything big happens. While we wait, we can work

on keeping some of the things that work well already. I was thinking about this at the ballpark the other day, where I went with my grandson to watch the Ottawa Fat Cats claw the Barrie Bay Cats, as they say on the sports pages. It seemed like there were a lot of grandparents and grandchildren at that game, a lot of kids seeing their first baseball game and it was a nice scene, one of the less spectacular things that makes a city great. Ottawa Stadium has always been a good place, ever since the Lynx played there in the ’90s, and while the quality of ball has slipped a bit, other things are improved. The music isn’t so loud and the mascot, who is called Grape, for some reason – perhaps because he’s purple – seems more friendly than Lenny the Lynx ever did. Baseball seemed to be slipping out of our hands a few years ago and it wasn’t helped by the city allowing much of the stadium parking lot to be used for other purposes. This is an example of how hard it is just to keep things going that work. If the Fat Cats ever really take off, getting into the stadium is going to be a big problem, one the city government

might help with. All over town there are examples of family-friendly sports events played at a high level. More and more people are turning out to see the Ottawa Fury play soccer. And the Ottawa 67’s games are always fun and affordable. Great cities, and the people who live in them, make sure that such activities survive and prosper. We have only to look the void where the Ottawa Ex used to be to see what can happen. On a more serious note, I’m still perplexed by how the mascot for a team of cats can be a grape. Perhaps many levels of government were involved.

Kemptville Giant Tiger – Worth Another Look! 487410-34-11

A few years ago, St. James Anglican Church on Clothier Street West in Kemptville conducted a building survey to determine what structural repairs were most pressing. After a section of the nave’s eastern wall fell to the ground two weeks ago, it’s safe to say patching up the exterior stonework has moved up on the parish’s to-do list. Sometime overnight on Aug. 9, a thin section of wall the length of the roof gave way, sending dozens of pieces of stone tumbling to the grass near the cemetery. Fortunately, no one was at the church at the time and there were no injuries. The fallen stone–which revealed the original brickwork underneath–was discovered the next morning by the church’s landscaper. The churchyard was cordoned off with yellow caution tape, and the fire department visited to assess the building’s structural integrity. Cook and Associates, the engineering firm that did the original study of needed repairs, is trying to determine what happened, said rector’s warden Ken Mews of St. James. Acting on what Mews described as a necessary “excess of caution,” workers shored up the chimney and patched several holes in the roof using metal beams and wooden braces. “They have stabilized the remaining stone,” Mews said, explaining that the problem of the weak exterior façade developed over decades because of water penetration and heavy rains. Last year’s earthquake certainly didn’t help the venerable building, he added. Last week, engineers brought a crane to the church to get a closer look at the problem. After securing the structure, engineers concluded that there was no danger of a further collapse. Services were held as usual over the weekend, though parishioners steered clear of the area near the fallen stone.

In which lamb-baby goes to the cottage

The Professor has been on vacation for a week but the Farmer has been working like a dog. I’m not sure why he uses that particular expression—he must be referring to the sheepdog and not our lazy watchdog. Anyway, in order to get the Farmer to relax while on vacation, I must spirit him away from the farm. We were invited to my sister’s fiance’s cottage in Quebec for a few days. This is a great idea. We don’t have to spend a lot of time planning and packing camping equipment and food. We just throw some clothes in a bag and drive for a couple of hours. Our only problem was we had a lamb

I didn’t notice this until about one second after I plugged the thing in— without first putting the lid on it. That corner of the cottage kitchen is now extremely clean. Everything went quite well during the day on our cottage visit; the hounds spent much of their time nose-to-nose with the lamb, keeping it company. A bottle of milk replacer was strapped to the side of the corral so the lamb could feed on demand. But when night fell, it was a different story. Lambs hate to be alone. When the dogs retreated to their beds for the night and the loons began to call over the lake, the lamb started to cry for his mama. And his brother. And his aunt and uncle. The Farmer suggested we do what he did when he adopted a puppy that wouldn’t stop crying. Feed it, make it a nice bed, and lock it in the back of the truck. So that’s what I did. It seemed cruel and neglectful to me at first, but I could see the lamb settling down right away in its cozy space. In the morning, I brought it back out to the corral again. All in all, it was a successful outing. The Farmer and I had a nice break, we have good tans and we both managed to finish our books. The only problem is I now have a lamb who calls for me from the barnyard, thinking I’m its mother.

Kemptville swimmer eyes Olympics J.P. ANTONACCI

jp.antonacci@metroland.com

For competitive swimmer Chris Tobin, ten years of training, over $25,000 in expenses, and countless hours in the pool will come down to one pressurepacked minute. This April, the Kemptville native will fly to Montreal from his Calgary home for a chance to swim his way to the 2012 Olympics. Tobin needs to beat the country’s top swimmers and post a time of 1:01:05 – that’s one minute, one second and five milliseconds – or less in the 100metre breaststroke to punch his ticket to London. His best time to date is 1:02:01, so the 25-yearold is one strong stroke away from achieving his dream of representing Canada on the world stage. A multiple gold medalist with the University of Calgary Dinos, Tobin has competed in two nationals and currently trains over 40 hours each week in the pool and the gym, in between his full-time job as a sales rep for an energy bar company. A comparatively late arrival to competitive swimming – he first swam with the Kemptville Bluefins and tried out for a competitive program in Nepean at age 15 – Tobin knows these trials could be his last chance to achieve his Olympic goal. He also knows that a single millisecond could be the difference between swimming in London and watching the Games on television. “In 2008 (at the Olympic trials), four guys hit the wall (at the end of the race) within 0.12 seconds, something like that. Two went (to Beijing), two didn’t. So if you think about it like that, it’s kind of stressful, Tobin said with a smile. He will dial up the intensity when the time comes, but the affable athlete says his first prior-

ity is to do his best and have fun. “The whole goal is just to think about swimming fast. If you think about too many other things, it just becomes a pain. You just enjoy it, have fun and do everything you can, and not worry about other people, he said. Though the Olympic qualifying time is taped to a mirror in his house as a constant reminder, Tobin tries to keep the big day in perspective by focusing on improving his mechanics and perfecting his race strategy. “There will lots of guys who are fit and ready to go. It’s all about who can relax and stick to their race plan, he said. Tobin can be sure that when he dives into the pool in Montreal, an entire community will be cheering him on from afar. Though he lives and trains in Alberta, after completing a kinesiology degree at the University of Calgary, Tobin volunteers as a swim coach and visits schools and swim camps whenever he’s back in his hometown. “I try to give my expertise and advice to the kids, and the number one thing I want them to learn is it’s got to be fun, he said. Giving back to the place that first supported him is a top priority for Tobin. “I’ve always had lots of support from my parents, the community, and a lot of businesses that have helped me out throughout the years. I really appreciate everything Kemptville’s done, he explained. Tobin thanked O’Farrell Financial Services and Fat Les for sponsoring a fundraising barbecue at O’Farrell’s County Road 44 office last Tuesday to help defray his travel and training costs. “O’Farrell has been my biggest support over the last few years. They’ve always been there when I needed them, he said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Kudos for action on Wellington speed I would like to congratulate the people of North Grenville for successfully lobbying their council to post reduced speed limits on Wellington Road. In The Advance, Wellington Road was described as a “gravel road,” not a “country speedway.” Well done! I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to convince our council to reduce the speed on Baker Road for almost a year after witnessing pets and wildlife being mowed down by cars that travel the legal speed limit of 80 km/h, and often much faster. Baker is also a gravel road, often full of potholes, with no shoulder, a blind hill,

barely enough width for two trucks to pass safely, with residential homes (many with children), and large farm equipment moving slowly off and on to the road. It is illogical for it to have the same posted speed limit as Hwy 31, which is a paved, well-maintained highway with two lanes with generous shoulders. I applaud the North Grenville residents and the town council for acting before someone was hurt. Janice Atkey Videto Winchester

Last Thursday afternoon some residents of Mountain and South Mountain claim to have seen a funnel cloud touch down in their neighborhood. Environment Canada could not verify the funnel cloud sightings but trees were torn down right across the area. This photo from Mike Villeneuve of Mountain shows just one of the many trees that came down during the storm. This one was along his driveway.

very successful 5th Annual Golf Tournament and 50/50 draw at the end of June, with assistance from Megan and Diane Wheatley. Part of this success was due to the generosity of local businesses who supplied door prizes and silent auction items for the tournament. 613-258-7438 Ben, Dan and Esther Kemptville Denture Clinic provides denturist services to the residents of Kemptville and the surrounding area. To some, the name Dan Vorano may be familiar as he has had a Denture Clinic in Smiths Falls for the past 30 years and assisting him at the Kemptville location are Denturists Ben Vorano and Esther Kang. Services provided by a Denturist include: making complete and partial dentures, implant retained dentures, immediate dentures, denture reline, repairs and adjustments, permanent soft liner alternatives and custom sports mouth guards. If you need new dentures, the Denturist you see at the Clinic will make your dentures on the premises, combining their knowledge of science to achieve the best possible function along with their craftsmanship and artistic skills to give you the look you are hoping to achieve. “One on one” contact with the person who actually makes your dentures assures that your concerns are heard and incorporated into the final results of your dentures. That is why we set the denture teeth in wax for a “try-in” which assures optimal aesthetics and function. An improved smile can build self-confidence and better function can enable one to eat a healthier diet resulting in an enhanced quality of life. Call or visit today, we’re here for you.

Dr. Eamon opened her practice in Kemptville 1988, after receiving her Doctor of Optometry Degree from the University of Waterloo and her Bachelor of Science from the University of Guelph. The practice has expanded and is now situated in a spacious office on Van Buren Street. High technology diagnostic instrumentation is used to detect the presence of eye diseases. The latest designs of optical lenses are dispensed in designer frames and contact lenses are designed and fitted. Every year Dr. Eamon participates in several worthwhile charity functions including visits to area schools to talk about the importance of your eyes, donating old glasses to under developed countries, and this past year participating in World Vision Day. World Vision Day was an initiative of Optometrists around the world to donate their fees for eye exams to help those in poorer countries to obtain glasses and care for their vision.
