Police, school boards work to prevent youth violence J.P. ANTONACCI jp.antonacci@metroland.com

Police chiefs, school board chairs and social agency directors came to the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Oct. 17 to sign two agreements that will increase communication and cooperation between the various agencies, all with an eye toward preventing youth violence. The documents outline the roles of police, schools and community partners when helping students who seem headed down a violent path, said CDSBEO superintendent Donaleen Hawes, who hosted the signing ceremony. Using the Community Threat Assessment Protocol and Police and School Board Protocol, the agencies hope to work together to keep schools safe and intervene to get at-risk youth the help they need before they harm themselves or others. The agreement details how to collect and analyze data and observe suspect behavior, when and how to involve parents in the assessment process, and how to evaluate risk levels. Agencies will share information to craft an intervention plan for at-risk students that will not necessarily include an out-of-school suspension, since the protocol identifies a poorly timed suspension as a high risk action. “Threat assessment trumps suspension” and is not a disciplinary measure, the report states. TEAM WORK A PIECE OF CAKE Taylor Patterson, Kelsie Leblanc and Anissa Schroder work together on dessert at the Kemptville Youth Centre’s Cook Night. On the menu for the dinner’s dessert last week was delicious cake. The centre’s members get together every Thursday night to prepare a sit down meal for themselves. See story page 3.

Youth violence has no place in schools
Continued from the front
Five school boards – the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, the Upper Canada District School Board, Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est Ontarien, Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario, and Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est – pledged to work with the OPP and the police forces of Perth, Smiths Falls, Gananoque, Brockville and Cornwall to assess risk and conduct threat assessment training for board staff. Eight community agencies providing family and youth services, health care, and mental health support also signed on, along with the Ministry of Children, Youth Services and Youth Justice Services. Kevin Cameron, director of the Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response, told a crowd of about 50 supporters it was “very rewarding” to see the long and involved process come to fruition. That process began because of a high profile school shooting in Alberta, he exPhoto by J.P. Antonacci plained. “Then as time went on, Representatives from five school boards, six police services, and numerous social agencies we realized, oh my goodness, we and government departments signed two joint protocols to prevent youth violence in can do so much good work by collaborating. We don’t need to wait Eastern Ontario. till tragedy occurs,” he said. Cooperative protocols such as these are mandated by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Cameron acknowledged that linking the agencies and negotiating what information to share and how to work together was no small feat. But, he said, in a choice between administrative legwork and picking up the pieces after a school shooting, “I would rather do violence prevention any day.”

John Bennett take the shells off of eggs as he prepares an egg salad for dinner.
50 years in business sale continues
R0041127143-43-11
Every Thursday evening in Kemptville, a group of hungry young people get together to enjoy a home cooked meal. It is not a special community dinner. It is cook night at the Kemptville Youth Centre. Last Thursday was a typical cook night for the centre. The basement at the centre was crowded with young people getting ready for the evening meal. One group was busy in the kitchen preparing the supper and another group was outside in the lounge setting up a long table. Everyone had a job to do. The menu for the evening was simple. Turkey soup made up from leftovers from the center’s thanksgiving meal, egg salad for everyone and for dessert, a homemade cake. The cook night concept fulfills a need. There is not only the nutritional value of the meal but more important learning how to cook it, working together as a team to set the table and producing the dinner and enjoying each other’s company. Even the cleaning up after, is fun when everyone is working together. Executive director of the youth centre, Stacey Tenbult has created a reasonably structured dinner for the center’s members. “Everyone wants to do something,” she said. She explained that everyone takes turns working in the kitchen or setting up the table and cleaning up. There are a few rules she expects diners to follow. “No-one leaves the table until everyone is done eating,” she said. The menu for the next week’s meal is discussed during the meal. “You will never know what you are going to have,” she said. While one group is setting up the dinner table the kitchen crew is busy cooking. Three girls, Taylor Patterson, Kelsie Leblanc and Anissa Schroder are busy on one side of the centre’s kitchen making a cake. Armed with a set of instructions, mixing bowls and ingredients and helped out by volunteer Monica McCue the cake building team is well on its way to having something to put in

the oven. Despite the laughter and the chatting going on the work still gets done. Volunteer Beulah Legate is watching how the rest of the meal preparation is going. From time to time she will step in to offer advice or encouragement. The volunteers are helpful but the cooking team is determined to do as much as they can on their own. On the other side of the kitchen, John Bennett is peeling the shells off a large bowl of eggs. His job is to prepare the egg salad for the dinner. “I do not mind helping out,” he said. “I enjoy doing it.” John is not exactly a newcomer to the kitchen. He has some experience from cooking at home. “It is a bit easier as there is more than one person,” he said. The actual dinner part of the evening is interesting. “It is neat,” said John. “People talk about their problems. It is a very caring atmosphere.” The dinner is coming together. The final step is the turkey soup.

Our economic vanguard
I
t is difficult to sort through all of the events we are expected to pay attention to. This past week, Oct. 16 to 22 was Small Business Week in Ontario. For the most part many of us were still reeling from the third election effort in a year plus one extra by-election in North Grenville back in 2010. Competing for our interest in a surprisingly quiet and low key way is Small Business Week. The launch, this week, of a series of interesting seminars about making your particular small business better was a great example of how confident small business owners are about their business and themselves. The idea for the seminar, and the ones still to come, are courtesy of the Business Retention and Expansion project, recently completed by the North Grenville business community and the municipality. The business people who attended the seminar were there because they wanted to take the opportunity to share their ideas, insights and enthusiasm with each other.
It is refreshing to see the many partnerships that have come out of the Business Retention and Expansion project and, for an evening, the many business groups represented at the seminar were on the same page for a few hours. The past federal and provincial elections were all about creating jobs and a healthy and sustainable business environment. One goes with the other. Small business accounts for over half of the private sector jobs we enjoy and generates close to one-third of our gross domestic product. Judging from the enthusiasm of those who came out for the seminar at the North Grenville Municipal Centre last week, the small business interests we often overlook are in good hands. If the times in front of us are going to be tough, meeting them head on and working together will be the only way to survive. What happens on the frontline of small business in Canadian communities makes itself felt throughout the country.

Who killed Halloween? Maybe nobody W
hat really scares the children about Halloween isn’t the guy with the three junked cars in his driveway or the house with the fake spider webs and recorded screams. It isn’t the neighbour who, once again, will open the door dressed up as Richard Nixon. Nor is it the incessant warnings about tooth decay. No, what children really dread about Halloween is the lecture from grownups about how much better Halloween used to be. It must be terrible for the kids — all dressed up in their expensively purchased Disney-themed costumes, excited and looking forward to lot of candy, then having to endure the speech about how this isn’t going to be half as much fun for them as it was for their parents. They know it by heart. Back in the day, nobody bought costumes at the costume store; costumes were made out of string and popcorn and charcoal, but kids enjoyed them much more than they do today. People gave out home-made candy at the door and nobody worried about it. Your parents didn’t have to wait at the curb for you. The weather was nicer. People were nicer. Zombies and princesses hadn’t been invented yet. Everything was
CHARLES GORDON Funny Town
scarier and nobody gave out dental floss. The kids have heard this all a million times and they dread hearing it again. They dread it even more than the Halloween Safety Tips. They dread it even more than hearing their parents say that in the old days they didn’t need Halloween Safety Tips. There are two ways of looking at this. Either something went wrong with Halloween, or nothing went wrong with Halloween. In support of the nothingwent-wrong theory, is the fact that every generation thinks that things were better when they were kids. And why not? They were kids; kids are not aware of every social or economic ill surrounding them. So maybe nothing is all that wrong with Halloween. Maybe older people just imagine that things were nicer when

they were young. On the other hand, if something really did go wrong with Halloween, the irony is that the same people who bemoan the loss of a simpler Halloween are responsible for the more complicated and allegedly less fun one we have today. It wasn’t some mysterious corporate plot that produced today’s Halloween. It was people like us, the people who give the Halloween lecture. We conspired in the making of Halloween into a big deal. After all, if no one had patronized the shopping centres when they decided to make Halloween a major merchandising event, Halloween would not have become a major merchandising event. If we had ignored the style sections when they urged adults to dress up and make Halloween an adult occasion, adults would not be dressing up and muscling in on the children’s day. If we had fought off the pressure to buy our kids the latest and greatest costumes, the kids would still happily be wearing sheets and riding borrowed brooms. So it’s a bit rich when we condemn Them for ruining Halloween. Them is us. Meanwhile, there is still the possibility that Halloween is not ruined at all for the people who matter — the kids. Fortu-

nately or not, they did not live 30 or 40 or 50 years ago, and don’t know what they missed. For all we know, they’re happy that they don’t, unlike their parents, have to dodge horse-drawn carriages and hide from mastodons when they go out trick or treating. If it’s too bad that Halloween has become important to the economy, the kids don’t know that. And if it’s too bad that Mommy and Daddy have to accompany them, staring suspiciously at your door while you hand over the candy, it doesn’t seem to spoil the fun for those who count. So, who ruined Halloween? Maybe nobody, yet. So relax. Christmas shopping begins the next day.

they are both proud North Grenville women so the venues, food and entertainment will no doubt be local. Maybe they would like to serve some Blue Gypsy Wine to their wedding guests. Sounds like a good idea to me. I went in to the barn to feed Rambo who is locked up until further notice. We don’t want him to breed this year. Instead we will get a new Suffolk ram. Anyway, Rambo was exuding a musk like I have never smelled before. The Farmer said he does that to attract the females. Sure enough, next time I went out I noticed two ewes standing under the window to the lambing room. They were bawling and crying as if they had lost someone special. We had better get them a new ram soon, or they will be breaking in for conjugal visits with Rambo. same old story about reducing taxes and making new jobs. I was quite upset listening to all this preamble, and not one candidate hit on the reason why there is no jobs. Canada is in the same mess as the United States and it is only getting worse. We, along with the United States, sold out to China and many other countries. It is called, “Free Trade. On the surface this may look good but after many years of trying to make it work, we found that many of these depressed countries have very little to trade with us and can comply with our high standard of living. Large North American manufacturing corporations discovered that these countries have a large labour force that is neither unionized or organized to be able to force their manufacturing sector to raise their income. North American manufactures took advantage of this
situation and closed their North American manufacturing and moved it all to these countries. Walk through all of the new retailers coming into Kemptville and check out where all of their merchandise is made. There was a time when Canada and the United States made all of that merchandise and we did quite well. I will give you an example: I was told a large retail Canadian store sells designer jeans made in the Philippines, where workers get 65 cents an hour. When the designer jeans are sold in Canada they retail for 75 dollars each. There is no work for Canadians unless our young people, graduating with a degree, will work for 65 cents an hour. So Mister Politician, what is the answer? Or better still, lets ask the university graduates what we should do about it. Harold Hellam Heckston, Ontario

The Spencerville Mill is ready for Halloween Spencerville residents are in for a special paranormal treat this Halloween. On Friday evening, Oct. 28 the Spencerville community is invited to drop by the Spencerville Mill for Halloween fun and costumes and karaoke. The highlight of the evening will be a presentation explain what the Prescott- based Spirit Quest Paranormal Society, who recently spent some time at the 150 year-old mill looking for paranormal activity. Brenda Ball the Chair of the Spencerville Mill Foundation followed the team of paranormal investigators as they went through the mill with their sensitive instruments and tools. Ball was impressed with the work the investigators did. She reported that during the investigation she was aware of a dramatic drop in temperature. “I was with investigators on the third floor,” she said. “Everything was normal at first and then I noticed a change in temperature.” According to the investigators, the temperature dropped about 15 degrees in only a few minutes. “The Society really takes their work seriously,” said Ball. “They’re careful not to make any proclamations on the spot.” Brenda Steinburg, co-founder of Spirit Quest said, “We had a temperature drop-

The investigating team is trained to look for what most observers would miss. “We also noticed and anomaly on a wall but were unable to capture it,” said Steinburg. The Spirit Quest Paranormal Society has a fair amount of experience hunting down events that require a different approach. They have gone through the old Cornwall jail investigating the building and cells for paranormal activity. After leaving the Spencerville Mill the investigators review the data they have collected. The group will be meeting with Spencerville Mill members to tell them what they have found. The public will have their chance here what the investigators had to say about their local heritage site on Friday, Oct. 28. The Mill will be hosting a fun evening of karaoke. The cost is $5. North Grenville business groups follow through on BR&E report JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com
The municipality of North Grenville kicked off the first in a series of business seminars last week. Celebrating small business week was one reason for the event but it was also an opportunity to follow through on recommendations set out by the recent North Grenville Business Retention and Expansion project. The Thursday Oct. 20 get together at the North Grenville Municipal centre featured a presentation by Jennifer DeBruin an experienced entrepreneur who has built her business mentorship business based on the core values of listen, learn and deliver. The presentation was preceded by a networking session where members of the working committee who implemented the recommendations. The business workshop series is a clear sign that the Business Retention and Expansion report that was completed this past summer in North Grenville will not be left gathering dust on a municipal shelf. North Grenville mayor David Gordon welcomed visitors to the seminar. “We are all here to celebrate you. Our Local Businesses, who work so hard and contribute so much to our Green and Growing Community here in North Grenville,” said Gordon. The Mayor explained that local business plays a major role in the growth North Grenville has enjoyed. “Our business community is diverse and offers an amazing mix of entrepreneurs who work incredibly hard to stay competitive, to stay fresh and to constantly evolve and change with the economic climate,” he said. Small businesses are responsible for up to 80 per cent of the job creation in North Grenville and are a major driving force in ensuring that the community has opportunity and healthy workforce. Gordon added, “Our local businesses are also leaders in regard to reinvesting back into the community, through generous donations to community causes, volunteering their time and resources
and working together to make our community the best it can be.” In 2010, when the North Grenville Chamber of Commerce and the municipality partnered to produce the Business Retention and Expansion report. Volunteers went out into the North Grenville community to survey businesses and find out what it was business felt was necessary for a healthy business environment in North Grenville. The survey asked 80 different businesses and received a wealth of ideas about how to maintain a healthy and growing business environment. “We are already implementing the recommendations,” said Terri Devine the municipality’s economic development coordinator. Devine feels the exercise of surveying business about what they wanted was worth it. “We listened to what they said and we are delivering it,” she said. One exciting result of the project was the creation of the BR&E working committee. The members of the committee are from all of the different business groups in the area. “The North Grenville Chamber of Commerce Partnered with the Municipality on the BR&E Program and is pleased to participate on the special working group that is working to fulfill the results of the survey,” said North Grenville Chamber CEO Wendy Chapman. “This first seminar sets the tone for the three workshops planned in 2012. The Chamber continues its ongoing monthly Networking and Education Business Connections, which are open to anyone, with presenters addressing ‘top of mind’ topics; continuing to ‘Helping your Business Grow’... in a growing Community.” The lobby of the North Grenville Municipal centre was filled with booths representing each of the working committee members businesses. Visitors to the seminar were treated to an hour of networking and mingling before the presentation by Jennifer DeBruin in the theatre. The evening was not all about business matters. It was all about people meeting people. “I think this is an amazing example of everyone working together and not

staying their different silos,” said Sally Litz the branch manager for CIBC in Kemeptville. Litz, one of the working committee members was pleased with the response from the business community. “If these seminars continue to be successful maybe we continue them,” she said. She said that there were many other topics that were as interesting as the ones picked to be presented that would be worth having. Mike O’Keefe , another member and representing the Grenville Futures Development Corporation said, “It is an excellent turnout.” He felt the evening was a great opportunity for all businesses to get together and meet. Committee members were pleased that the recommendations made in the Business retention and Expansion report were going being implemented. “When you see action coming from this you realize you are actually being heard,”
said Ted Livingston, job developer for CSR Consulting. Brad pinch representing Business Network International, (BNI) on the committee was happy to see so many people out for the seminar. “We have seen small business working really hard to grow their business,” he said. He believed that the best way for small business to success in any area was to share information. “It is great meeting all of the people here tonight. We are very lucky that we have a community that supports small business. The working committee is made up of representatives from seven community business organizations. They are The Leeds and Grenville Small Business Centre, North Grenville Chamber of commerce, the Kemptville BIA, the North Grenville chapter of BNI International, CSE Consulting, Grenville CFDC and the municipality of North Grenville .

There were prizes given for best male, female and couples customes, however costumes were not mandatory and many door prizes were given out. The D.J. was Quality Entertainment from Ottawa. Between eating all of the food that people brought to the Monster Bash and dancing all night long, everyone had a great time. The evening resulted in $2,489.50 being raised, all of which is being donated to the cancer society. Mandy Flinn said that no one can predict if cancer will come their way. “Cancer hits close for me as I had a cousin who in her early 30’s was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she had very young children. She has been gone for a number of years now,” said Mandy. Monster Bash organizers have already begun to work on next year’s event.

Kemptville Player Inc. let their hair down JOSEPH MORIN joe.morin@metroland.com
The Kemptville Players Inc. are well known for their wonderful theatrical performances. The work that goes into performing their plays and the hundreds of hours they spend on getting ready for each performance is, for the most part, taken for granted by their audience. If you ever wanted to find out more about what makes a performer do what they do, come over to one of the Kempville Players Inc. open houses. They are held on the third Tuesday of each
month from September to June at 8 p.m. at the IOOF Hall in Kemptville. At the last open house on Oct. 18 the Players brought out their Halloween spirit and arrived in costume. They dressed up as vicars and vixens. While there was no acting as such at this open house there was some interesting reading going on as performers had a look at potentially new material they may perform in the future. The open house ended with some great snacks and a bit of socializing. Next up on the stage for the Kempvilee Play-
ers Inc. is their performance of Agatha Christies ‘The Mousetrap’ from Nov.3 to 6 at Leslie hall in Kemptville. The Players are also going to be talking part in the Eastern Ontario Drama League one – act festival. The Players will be performing ‘Trifles’ at the competition held on Nov. 10 and 12. Celebrating life and love, a Kemptville couple are starting up a monthly meeting for the parents and friends of lesbians and gays. The newly formed chapter of PFLAG will hold its first meeting at the University of Guelph Kemptville campus at the W. b. George conference room on Nov. 10.m The meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. After this first meeting there will be a monthly meeting held at the same time and place. Katie and Bre Wick have moved to Kemptville a few years ago. They were married at an Ottawa Church and while living in North Grenville as a married couple had not noticed much
As a couple Bre and Katie have had their own issues with family and friends. “It has been hard on us personally,” said Katie. The two feel the world is changing and that a new way of thinking about different ways of loving is starting to take hold. “Love does not discriminate,” said Katie. The couple believes there are people in the community who would secretly support a support group such as the one they are starting up. “It is difficult when those who support us are so quiet but those who don’t are so vocal.” Bre and Katie are committed to the Kemptville chapter of PFLAG. They were inspired by the success of LGBT Lanark County. The meetings are free and everyone is welcome. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender

Katie and Bre Wick on their wedding day. Last year the couple tried to host a similar kind of group meeting at the college. They invited students who were curious about the lesbian gay issue to drop by for a chat. “We had a poor response,” said Bre. “ People like to put labels on everything,” she added.

negativity about their relationship. Still, the couple who are currently applying to adopt a child, felt there was still a need to try and support others who may be heading down a similar path. “This is more of a support group than a social group,” explained Bre.”We are doing this so that people will have a place to go to. Saying that Kemptville is a great place to live and work, she pointed out that the area tended to have conservative sensibilities. Coming on the heels of the tragic suicide of fifteen-year old Jamie Hubley in Ottawa last week, Bre and Katie feel very strongly about the need for a way for individuals and other couples to express their feelings about their relationships.

73’s suffer pair of losses BRIAN WILSON Special to the Advance
The 73’s opened this past weekend, by facing the Cumberland Grads on Friday, Oct 21 in North Grenville. Three minutes into the first period, Cumberland scored to go up 1-0. Three and a half minutes later, the Grads took a 2-0 lead and that’s how the period ended. As the second started, Josh Pitt needed only thirty seconds to get Kemptville back into the game with his first of the night. The goal was setup by Ben Hutton and Blaine Byron. Cumberland‘s Kale Wild scored to restore their two goal lead but that would only last thirty seconds. Pitt scored his second of the game from Steve Genier and Jesse Lussier to bring the 73’s back within one.
Unfortunately, the Grads scored a power play goal with just a half a minute left in the second and took a 4-2 lead into the break. In the third, Pitt scored his third of the night, assisted by Genier but that was it for the 73’s as Cumberland held on to the 4-3 victory. Josh Pitt’s hat trick gives him 13 goals for the season and he was named the game’s second star. Kemptville travelled to Pembroke on Sunday, Oct. 23 to take on the Lumber Kings. Pembroke opened the scoring to jump out to the early lead but Mason Nowak tied the game shortly after. The goal was his fourth of the season and was set up by Ben Hutton and Jesse Lussier. The Kings managed a go ahead goal in the last minute of period one to take a 2-1 lead to the dressing room. In the second, Keegan

Kemptville 73’s Billy Ulrick challenges Grads goalie Patrick Martin while defenceman Manasie Kendall covers him. Rowe scored twice to give the 73’s a 3-2 lead at the end of two. Alex Bouchey assisted on both goals and Sam McLaughlin added a single while Hutton got his
second helper of the game. The score remained the same until the last minute and a half of the third when Pembroke’s J.J. Hart tied the game.
The
When the overtime period solved nothing, the outcome was determined by a shootout. The Kings game out with the 4-3 victory. Kemptville goaltender, Travis Wilkins, was named second star of the game and was brilliant as he faced 56 shots. The back to back, one goal losses, run the 73’s losing streak to eleven. The 73’s will be facing a crazy schedule this coming week. Upcoming games see Kemptville play in Kanata on Tuesday, Oct 25 against the Stallions and then go up against the Junior Senators in Ottawa on Thursday, Oct. 27. Friday, Oct. 28 the Carleton Place Canadians will be visiting North Grenville and then on Saturday, Oct 29, the 73’s go to Carleton Place for the rematch. Come out and support you team and community. Catch the Junior A fever!

But after a few years of kicking the bejeez out of them, they’re more comfortable than ever and still going strong. Expensive? Nope, they get cheaper by the day. The NEW Sonic & Orlando
WOW!
These are Worth The Drive!
2012 Chevrolet
The 2012 Orlando was designed to strike the right balance between what you need and what you want. It has three rows of theatre- style seating, which means there's plenty of space inside for your entire family and a few friends. Or fold down the 2nd and 3rd row seats to make room for almost anything you might pick up along the way. And because Orlando is built on the same compact platform as the Chevrolet Cruze, it not only moves through traffic like a small car — it parks like one too. Now that's balance.

Some rules are just easier to break. Case in point: the upcoming 2012 Sonic. For one, just look at it. Small car aesthetic conventions? Obviously broken. Secondly, uncommon refine- ments to steering and suspension give Sonic a responsiveness that sets it apart from its peers. Compact-car ride and handling standards? Shattered. But are there any rules this little car doesn't break? Yes - Sonic obeys the laws of physics. So you can see it right now... but Leather, sunroof, navigation, push it'll be a bit before you get to hear it. Coming button fall 2011. start 96500 kms
