1 DONOR, 8 LIVES Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Protesters gathered outside the North Grenville Public Library on Prescott Street in Kemptville on May 1 to participate in the province-wide general strike against Premier Doug Ford. 24 communities across Ontario participated in the strike in the midst of many cuts the government has made to vital programs and services, such as the 50 Million Tree Program, public library services, cuts to education, and more. The residents also voiced concerns over the need for electoral reform, and Ford's lack of action to acknowledge gender diversity.

KEMPTVILLE STRIKES AGAINST PREMIER DOUG FORD A general strike against Premier Doug Ford raised many voices in 24 communities across Ontario on May 1, and the rain didn't keep protesters off the streets in Kemptville. In front of the North Grenville Public Library, local residents yielded signs in protest of a variety of Ford's cuts to education, the 50 Million Tree Program, library services, and more. Organizer of the local protest, Alan McKay, just moved to Kemptville from Ottawa with his family and spoke out against the

cuts to library services. "It's going to have a massive impact on what books we can have available," he said. He has six children, aged three weeks to 17 years old. McKay said the interlibrary program, which has now been cancelled as a result of funding cuts, was very effective. "It was actually a costsaving program that was introduced 30 years ago as a solution at the time, in the midst of other cuts," he explained. "They said 'we can't give you those books for every library, but we can move them around between libraries,' and it's worked great." He described the decision as "completely offensive." Another North Grenville resident and mother,
Paulina Hrebacka/Torstar Former Green Party candidate and North Grenville resident, Derek Morley, joins the May 1 general strike against Premier Doug Ford. Malina Dockendorff, brought her two children along to participate in the protest. "My sign says 'No Cuts to Education,' because I'm concerned about the larger classroom sizes," she said. "I
have two children right now in grades 1 and 4, and as they move into secondary school, I want to make sure that they get the support they need from their teachers. I stand behind the teachers in our province." Her seven-year-old daughter, Eliza, held up sign she made stating, 'Save the Trees.' "They keep us alive and they give us air to breathe," she explained. Eliza attends École élémentaire publique Rivière-Rideau on the Kemptville Campus. Dockendorff's nineyear-old son, Miles, stood up for his transgender friends. He protested Ford's lack of action to acknowledge gender identity, as he has refused to move forward on the issue. Miles' sign stated, 'I'm Old Enough to Know About My Transgender Friends.' Former Green party can-
didate and Kemptville resident Derek Morley showed off his 'Books not Beer' sign to cars passing by. "As far as I can see, we've got a big issue here in Kemptville, because we have the forestry centre here," he said. "With the cuts Ford has proposed, we would lose 40 per cent of the forestry centre's business." Morley is also a former employee at the Ferguson Tree Nursery. "The forestry centre is a proud Kemptville institution. It's been serving our whole province for decades," he continued. "My uncles have fond memories
of picking trees there and having dozens of forests passed through their hands." "I just don't see what Doug Ford's got against clean air," he added. "Climate scientists say that the best way to combat climate change right now would be to plant one trillion trees." Morley also touched on his opinion that there is a need for electoral reform, and the fact that Ford received only 40 per cent of the vote, which does not reflect the interest of the majority. "We need to remind him of that, with our descending voices."
STORY BEHIND THE STORY
On May 1, a province-wide general strike against Premier Doug Ford was demonstrated in 24 communities across Ontario. North Grenville residents joined the strike in front of the North Grenville Public Library, raising concerns over Ford's cuts to interlibrary services, the 50 Million Tree Program, educational cuts, the lack of electoral reform and more.

Dear God, whatever you do, do not eat the cones at the Catered Affairs booth. Not worth it. They're just not edible. No, really, they're not because they're made of birch wood. Natalie Castellas, owner and operator, was making sure to tell patrons at the Taste for Hospice, fundraiser for the Beth Donovan Hospice at the North Grenville District
High School in Kemptville on Saturday, May 4, to use the cones merely as a food conveyance system, rather than as part of the overall edible culinary experience. As she placed creamed savoury cabbage and corn with sear bay scallop into what looked to be tan-coloured ice cream cones, she explained that the birch wood cones were "compostable, environmentally friendly." As an added bonus, they were "easy to carry around, without burning off your fingers."

LOCAL DOCTOR RECOGNIZED WITH UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA AWARD DR. SUZANNE RUTHERFORD NOMINATED BY MEDICAL STUDENT

The clinic hosts about six medical students or new graduates completing their residency per year. "We always have a learner in-house." Rutherford said she learns just as much from her students as they do from her. PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A Kemptville doctor has been commended by one of her undergraduate apprentices for her performance as a physician and teacher. Dr. Suzanne Rutherford, a family doctor at Kemptville's Rideau Crossing Health Centre, was presented with the University of Ottawa's Preceptor of the Year award on April 24. It was a surprise recognition. Rutherford has been practicing since 2009 and

At the University of Ottawa, all third-year medical students are required to do a six-week rotation in family medicine with the opportunity to nominate a physician with whom they work that did an excellent job and went above and beyond what was expected. "The students follow the physician throughout the day, see her patients, and really get to see how diverse family medicine is," said Lina Shoppoff, Director of Undergraduate Medical Education at the University of Ottawa.

Students were asked to nominate physicians who showed excellence in teaching, professionalism, great leadership skills and were great communicators. The recipient of the award also needs to have influenced students to pursue family medicine as a specialty. "In my opinion, I strongly believe that Dr. Rutherford is the epitome of an ideal family physician," the student stated in their nomination. "The University of Ottawa is extremely fortunate to have her as a professor and provide clinical teaching to medical students. Dr. Rutherford is unquestionably the most influential preceptor I have had the privilege to learn under and most certainly deserving of this award."

HARD STONES A few tables over was the "upscale casual" vibe of Hard Stones Grill, owned and operated by Catia Charbel. "We specialize in homemade (food) from scratch," said Charbel, after pouring several glasses of beer. There are two such grills, one in Kemptville, one in Nepean, and all of the food is "cooked in the house," she said, dipping into restaurant parlance. "People like homemade, healthy, no preservatives." They use a lot of Ontario-grown produce, and "we try to be as local as possible." But even at this table, it's a local take on an international flavour - from Sweden to Korea, as Steve Watson piled high the Korean pulled pork, topped with kimchi. – with files from Paulina Hrebacka

reduce the sun in the back of the house in the summer. It gets really hot at dinner time and the setting rays blind whomever decides to sit in the spot that is directly in their path. I found a page of exterior shades on Amazon, and showed the Farmer. They ranged in price from $17 to $267. "I just took the old porch apart at the cottage site," he announced. "I'll bring the blinds home from there." Well, that's a good idea too. The cottage itself, when it is finished, will be a hotbed of recycled items. I doubt there will be anything new in there at all. From appliances and rugs to furniture and decor, it will all be coming from our basement - the family catch-all for unwanted things. My word of 2019 is "Less." It stands for a lot of different things: less eating and drinking, less worrying, less spending. The next time I go to spend money on a nonconsumable something I think I need, I'm going to put my single mom hat back on and think like the Farmer: "Do I really need it? Can I find something else I already have to serve this purpose?" I found an old leaky cooler today and upcycled it into a recycling bin for our empties. I'm starting to get the hang of this. I hate to spend money. My husband might spit out his coffee reading that line (if he read my column, which he doesn't), because he has seen my Visa bill. So let me clarify: I hate spending too much money for something. I do enjoy a good retail therapy session - but it has to be filled with amazing deals, great finds and super sale prices or I will have buyer's remorse, and likely return what I bought. My parents raised us to be thrifty, and I have worked hard for my money since I was a young girl. I know the value of a dollar, as they say. I was also a single mom going without luxuries in order to pay the utility bill and put food on the table. That is when I discovered thrift shops, second hand stores and consignment. We have all of these stores in Kemptville, and my closet is full of the treasures I have found on their racks, at a fraction of the original price. I am happy to know that I am reducing the amount of clothing going to a landfill, by buying second hand. And you find things that were made to last - wool suits, leather jackets, silky blouses and designer dresses - for the price you would pay for a trendy new top from a big box store (which might actually fall apart after three washes -
the top; not the store). When I married the Farmer and moved in, I used to laugh at all of the examples of things that had been put to good use for a second time: a rusted out farm implement became an art installation in the garden; broken deep freezers were turned into feed storage bins; and an old bedframe, complete with springs, was attached to the side of the house so the vines could grow on it. But my Farmer learned how to upcycle from his uncle, when he spent summers on the family dairy farm near Winchester. That uncle was raised in the '30s, during the time when nothing was wasted or thrown away if it had an ounce of use left in it. Yes, you can go to the farm store and buy nifty, newfangled items with which to store and serve your animal feed - or you can make your own from things you have around the house. Old ice cream containers make great scoops for corn and sweet feed. Those rubber nipples for feeding lambs fit right over the end of a soda bottle. An old kiddie pool makes a great pen for baby chicks, and the upturned lid to a garbage can makes a great field dish for sweet feed when you are trying to attract a cow. I'm even learning to save and recycle seasonal decor: the decorative pine cones, ribbon, foam sponge and pot from my Christmas garden arrangements have been put away until next December, when I will walk around the property collecting the red dogwood, emerald pine and white birch branches to create my own display. Those two pieces were worth $50 last year. We need porch shades to

RAISE HELL IF RESTRUCTURING CRIPPLES RURAL SERVICES The devil is in the details. And many of the details could be devilishly devastating to rural areas in the province. The provincial budget brought down April 11 included a few shocks but nothing too unexpected from a government elected to put Ontario's finances on a solid footing. However, some of the more vague statements turn out to be not so benign. Since budget day, Ontarians have been reeling from new revelations almost every day about another important service being diminished or restructured. Word trickled out the number of health units would be reduced from 35 to 10 with their budgets slashed by almost a third, followed by confirmation 52 ambulance services would be melded into 10. There are also new details about cuts to teachers' jobs, library support services, legal aid and conservation authorities. However, there are still plenty of unknowns about how the cuts will be rolled out and what the effect will be on those relying on the services. Proposed centralization of the paramedic service justifiably makes folks nervous. For the last few years, rural politicians around Ottawa have been speaking out as their ambulances are ordered into the city to try to compensate for shortages there, leaving country folks vulnerable. If ambulance services in Lanark counties are rolled into one Ottawa-centric service, will rural representatives still be able to forcefully advocate for their residents or will their voices become a minority and be lost in the shuffle (as happened with the Local Health Integration Networks)? Questions could be asked of the proposed centralization of health units. Rural and urban priorities often clash when it comes to issues health units deal with, as what may be acceptable in the city might be viewed as an invasion of rights to country folks. Integration can work if changes result in cost-savings, efficiencies and effective governance taking into account both urban and rural needs. If all it causes is turmoil, rancour and a loss of rural programs and rights, then the approach will fail. And too often in the past, such centralization initiatives faltered because rural services and property taxpayers were disadvantaged or ignored. So in the next few months when the provincial government starts implementing the details of its restructuring of paramedic services and health units, as well as in other areas, it's important local representatives are genuinely consulted. And it's critical the public support and push them to forcefully defend programs such as community paramedicine and ensure governance includes adequate rural representation. When the devil in the details becomes apparent, it's important both municipal and county officials, along with our rural MPPs, stand up for our programs and rights, even if they have to play the devil's advocate. If not, there will be the devil to pay.

NGDHS PRESENTS 'BEAUTY AND THE BEAST' MAY 16, 18 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com North Grenville District High School (NGDHS) students are getting ready to perform one of their biggest productions yet - a classic favourite, Beauty and the Beast. Grade 12 student and seasoned performer in the drama department, Oliver Quigley, has been a regular cast member of the high school productions every year since seventh grade. He will play the hopeless romantic candlestick, Lumière. His favourite part of the role is getting to perform Be our Guest. "It's one of my favourite numbers in the musical
and the movie," he said. Drama teacher Meredith Mott says it's one of the largest productions that the high school has put on to date, with about 45 students involved, either performing or filling roles as part of the crew working behind the scenes on set design and lighting. Grade 10 student Alexa Beanish will be the playful and lovable teacup, Chip. It is her second year in theatre and she says her favourite attribute of her character is how childish he can be. Based on the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast, there won't be too many surprises in the script, but it will feature some newer songs from

"I'm really excited to have Beauty and the Beast as my number and get to sing in front of a bunch of people." Thompson said her love for performing will likely see her join a theatre group in university. "I definitely want to keep it in my life, because it's such a rewarding experience and I love doing it," she said. Local musician, choir director and theatre producer, Phil Konopka, will be accompanying the performers on piano. Konop-

UNBLOCKING YOUR INNER ENERGY AT MYSTICAL FAIR DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Imagine if your life coach was also a psychic? It might be the best of both worlds - both this world and the spiritual one. Katarina Knezevic may not be able to foretell the future, but "I've always been intuitive," she said during "Katarina's Mystical Fair," held at the Kemptville Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday, May 4. She runs Katarina's Mystical Emporium in Prescott, but, before setting up shop at 124 King St. W., worked both as a life coach and in financial management, along with 25 years in bank manage-
ment. "This (job) is where I turn all of my skills and apply it on the spiritual plane," she said. "It's not like a thunderbolt. You just know things ... Everything is energy. People will make you feel a certain way." That energy can conjure up names or songs or even images of animals in her mind's eye, though she also reads palms and tarot cards. She soon hopes to have a reflexologist, a reiki master, and an Indian hand massager at her store, though she is quick to point out that she does "not (want) to take the place of traditional psychiatry or medicine," she said. "It's important you don't take a
person's power away." Knezevic decided to change gears professionally after a "life-changing illness," forced her to re-evaluate her life. "I self-healed, not completely, but I changed my way of being ... It was time for me to do something to change." The fair did not just feature palm reading and tarot cards, like those done by Knezevic, but also checking chakras too, like Dianna Shapton does, using crystals, "to unblock so that there is flow" she said. "I don't like people being unhappy," she said. She has seen people overcome depression and the fallout from childhood trauma, who are now "able to be seen again in the world ...
Desmond Devoy/Torstar Dianna Shapton, left, and Elle Molineux, right, compare their crystal balls during Katarina's Mystical Fair at the Kemptville Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday, May 4. It's made them more open." She knows of this experience herself: "I wouldn't allow myself to be seen," she said. By unblocking herself, she felt like she was, in a sense, "coming out
of the closet." Unlike Knezevic across the room, she uses intuitive light body sessions, which can last from 60 to 90 minutes. She also uses tuning forks, crystals, a crystal
harp, singing bowls, and even analysis of voice clips from clients, to dig deep into what is blocking their flow. A person's voice, she said, "carries all of our patterns."

CREIGHTON, Delephine God’s Garden God looked around his garden And He found an empty place. And the He looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids, And whispered “Peace be thine”.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The walk-in clinic will be housed at 3-5 Clothier Street in the Children's Mental Health of Leeds and Grenville (CMHLG) Kemptville office. The project will formally be launched Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the courtyard at KDH. "The walk in clinic is an expansion of the services already being provided in North Grenville."
