AGENCIES BAND TOGETHER ON PROJECT PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Since it was announced in 2018 that the Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) would receive funding toward a mental health and addictions hub for children and youth, plans have been in the works to bring the much-needed services to town. More than 20 mental health agencies working to improve care for children and youth across Leeds and Grenville have banded together to realize the new Mental Health & Addictions Health Hub for Children and Youth in North Grenville. The hub was officially launched at the KDH on May 11. Frank Vassallo, chief executive officer of the hospital, said the need for improved services locally was recognized in 2016 through public consultations during
the development of the hospital's strategic plan. "While the development of the hub is continuing, we are committed to rolling out services as they become available," said Vassallo. "This hub is representative of our need to bring change to the community." The first initiative of the hub, to open a walk-in clinic, was spearheaded by the leading agency in the collaborative, Children's Mental Health of Leeds and Grenville (CMHLG). The clinic opened in April and is hosted on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 3-5 Clothier Street in Kemptville, out of the CMHLG building. Children and youth aged 18 and younger and their families are welcome to drop-in. Professionals at the clinic offer consultations to focus on behavioural, emotional, and other mental health concerns through a collaborative and strength-based
process. KDH board chair Robert Morais said the hospital's partnership with local youth mental health agencies demonstrates an understanding of the community's needs and a determination to work toward the necessary solutions. May 5-11 was Children's Mental Health Week in Ontario. Local MPP Steve Clark was at the hub launch to touch on the province's recent moves to fund and support improved services in local communities, such as the recently announced $174 million which will fill gaps in mental health services across the province. "I'm proud that Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Addictions and Mental Health have received over $535,000 from that funding," he said. CMHLG received approximately $54,000. "Mental health is health, and we need to put very strong supports in for mental health as we do in our existing health care system." North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford spoke to the societal impacts on children's mental health. "In an increasingly phonetic and high-paced society, ensuring the mental health of our children is as critical as ensuring their physical safety and well being," she said. "In rural areas where it is hard to find external supports when things go wrong, the burden on parents is greater, and the price to the community is higher. I believe [the hub] will give families hope, and help get their foot in the door, not after months or years of waiting, but a matter of days." A number of representatives from agencies collaborating with the KDH on the hub were at the launch, including individuals from Connect Youth, Every Kid in Our Communities Coalition, Parents' Lifelines of Eastern Ontario, and more. Kris Van De Ven, program navigator, meets with referred individuals aged 1225 daily and directs them to the appropriate service provider. He accepts referrals from doctors, emergency rooms, parents, and self referrals. Dr. Irfan Moledina, consultant pediatrician at KDH has served the North Grenville community since 2014. He provided unique insight into patients' mental health needs in the area, noting he and his colleagues have been seeing more and more young individuals with all types of mental health concerns, and that finding the appropriate support for such individuals is often tedious, challenging, confusing, time consuming, and frustrating for families. Moledina has worked with many families with a wide range of mental health concerns for their children, including the case of a nineyear-old who is repeatedly suspended from school for aggressive behaviour; a 13year-old who has cut marks all over their arms; and a 7year-old who refuses to go to school and has regular panic attacks because they're constantly bullied. "As health care professionals, we're constantly running around in circles," he said. "Trying to find the right solution is what drove us to opening this hub in the first place, and it will serve as the foundation for the development of mental health care in our community."

TREE NURSERY CORRECTS INACCURATE MEDIA REPORTS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Representatives from the Ferguson Tree Nursery in Kemptville attended the North Grenville committee of the whole meeting on May 7 to clarify some inaccuracies that have been published in the media last week. It was reported that as a result of the provincial government's cuts to funding for the 50 Million Tree Program, the local tree nursery would have to kill up to 3 million trees that would otherwise go unpurchased and unplanted, since the program has been cancelled and the nursery does not have the demand for the volume of seedlings without it. Carl Doucette, chair of the Ferguson Forest Centre board, started by stat-
ing that the tree nursery is in no danger of closing. "This is a hiccup," he said. "The decision by Forests Ontario to stop this program will mean a loss of revenue, but it's not going to close the Ferguson Forest Centre. Secondly, he clarified that no seedlings at the nursery will be killed. "Some of the press has been good; however, some of what has been printed is not true," he said. "We do not kill trees at the Ferguson Tree Nursery." Patchell said the 50 Million Tree Program made 40 per cent of the tree nursery's annual income, but they will be rolling out some strategies for recovery. "We have a number of other irons in the fire," he said. Nursery staff have
plans to manage their inventory and staffing differently, diversify their products and come up with new marketing directions. "Although it is very concerning, it's not going to be a killer at this point," said Patchell. Coun. John Barclay asked Patchell to unpack a recent newspaper headline which claimed that the nursery will be euthanizing 3 million trees. "Let us know a little bit about what is actually going to happen to stock that you don't anticipate having customers for," he said. "When the reporter asked me about the stock in the ground now, the excess stock and that sort of thing - I was talking about what's in the ground for the next three years' production," said Patchell, "not this year's trees." Right now, Patchell said the nursery is trying to find new funding, clients, and ways to utilize the products that are now being released as a result of the cancellation of the program, as the stock is already in the ground. "The temperatures are getting warmer and drier, so the trees would not have much of a
chance." Mayor Nancy Peckford asked what the best-case scenario for the fate of the 3 million trees would be. Aside from the government rescinding its decision, Patchell said he's received many significant expressions of interest in the seedlings. "There's the new owners of the NDF mill up in Pembroke; they contacted me today asking about future seedling availability,"
said Patchell. The new mill owners have 14 different mills - 13 in the states, and the Pembroke mill being the only one in Canada. "They're very active in planting for private lands in the states and they're interested in seeing what they can do here." Patchell added that he's received many calls from bankers who have asked how they can help the nursery. When Mayor Peckford asked for more details on the former 50 Million Tree Program, Patchell made an important distinction about Ontario's tree planting programs, as there are many existing reforestation programs planting millions of trees in Onta-
rio, but the 50 Million Tree Program was the only one focused on afforestation. "Just saving the seedlings on their own is not going to help the environment," he said. "What we really need to save is the tree planting program." Patchell explained that selling the seedlings without a planting program is not going to help. "The seedlings will go to waste," he said. "If you have a planting program, then you're establishing new forests, you're protecting our environment, cleaning the air, protecting our water, our soils - and that's what we really need to do. We need a planting program that's going to be out there for the long run."

Patchell said Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, John Yakabuski, stated that there are 68 million trees being planted in Ontario outside of the 50 Million Tree Program, but that those plantings are all for reforestation. "That's where forest companies are out there and they're harvesting trees for wood products," Patchell explained. "They have a requirement to replace those trees, because most of that planting is on crown land." However, the 50 Million Tree Program was a private land planting program for land reclamation for underutilized, poor quality land that can't be used for agricultural purposes.

Wally surprised his sons by producing a long list of music he wanted played at Lorna's celebration, including the original Deep Purple: "when the deep purple falls, over sleepy garden walls ..." I thought that was perfect, because Lorna loved the colour purple. Her favourite song Stardust also mentions the colour purple in the first line. We made sure there was a touch of purple among the simple garden flowers at her ceremony, and those of us who didn't wear purple clothes pinned on a purple ribbon or butterfly in her memory. Wally led the readings with a memorable tribute to his beloved "Lorn." He barely looked at his notes but rather he scanned our faces as he spoke about his love for his wife. His kids got up and took their turns then, adding a few laughs here and there, as Lorna would want. Finally it was time for the pastor to read Proverbs 31. It was the perfect summary of Lorna's life. And when she got to verse 22, the pastor looked up and smiled, "she was clothed in fine linen ... and purple." Maybe Lorna had a hand in planning her own celebration of life. It was a simple, honest and straightforward service much like Lorna herself. And as I looked around the room at four generations of Fishers and Patersons, I wondered if Lorna had pictured something like this family legacy on that day, decades earlier, when she first spotted Wally sitting on her mother's couch. My mother-in-law passed away last month. She had suffered with dementia. When we heard, we hopped in the car for a drive into the city to see my father-in-law, Wally. He was sitting on the couch at his daughter's house, and he was exhausted. I went and sat beside him. "I'm sorry you lost your girl, Wally," I said, patting him on the knee. "Well, we knew she was sick two years ago," he explained. "The dementia got worse, day by day. And I lost her, day by day." At first, it was kind of cute, the way Lorna would forget things: her purse, her bowling schedule, how many glasses of Cuvee Speciale she'd had ... and then it began to take us by surprise. Soon she was forgetting recipes she had practiced for more than 50 years. Each Sunday she asked, "Whose baby is that?" or "Which of my sons are you married to?" Lorna wasn't sure what was happening, but she learned to cope. She would just smile and nod and pretend that she knew who was addressing her. But if you were a relatively new acquaintance, from the
past five years or so, your name would escape her. The disease took hold and the decline came quickly these past few months. Lorna met Wally in the early 1950s. He was sitting on her mother's living room couch one day when she came home from school. Her brother Bill had brought him home. Lorna took one look at the handsome man with the big grin and flashing eyes, walked into the kitchen and told her sister Dot: "See that man in the living room? That's the man I'm going to marry." Wally and Lorna were married for nearly seven decades. They raised five children together. Wally worked in metals at the National Research Council and while Lorna worked at a bank for a time, her domain was the kitchen. The aroma of her baking attracted neighbourhood kids to the kitchen door, where they were allowed "two cookies each" from the jar she kept there. Each day at lunch her children ran the few blocks home, where Lorna had covered the dining room table with open-faced peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on her fresh baked bread. Every Thursday she made dinner for the extended family. Her recipes were handed down through the generations, to her children and grandchildren. When it was time to sit down with the pastor and put a celebration of life together for Lorna, Wally had some strong ideas. His wife was not overly religious, he said, but she did like to attend church regularly. We got out the Bible and started choosing psalms and prayers of remembrance. Suddenly it hit me: "Lorna was a Proverbs 31 wife," I said, explaining the verse about the Wife of Noble Character, who was known for her strong work ethic, integrity, charity, strength and love of family. We decided to include that verse in the service readings.

As local personalities served coffee, burgers and treats at McDonald's restaurants on May 8, children's families were checking into the Ronald McDonald House in Ottawa or using the two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at CHEO. Money raised during the May 8 McHappy Day campaign totalled $44,440 from the restaurants in Smiths Falls, Perth, Carleton Place and Kemptville. Kudos to franchise owners Tim and Lorraine Carter and staff for such a valiant effort at fundraising for this worthwhile cause. More than 1,400 McDonald's restaurants participated in the national fundraising initiative by donating $1 for every Big Mac, Happy Meal and hot McCafe beverage sold. This, along with each community's generous support, will in turn will help more than 26,000 Canadian families every year stay at Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada while their children are being treated at nearby hospitals. Celebrity servers in the various restaurants included politicians, doctors,
lawyers, and firefighters. Since it opened its doors in June of 1984, Ronald McDonald House has provided a warm, safe, affordable, and compassionate environment for families with seriously ill children receiving medical services at CHEO. My family has been blessed and cursed at the same time. A young person in my life has been struggling with an illness and has been at CHEO several months. He's on the mend though - albeit a long and arduous task is in front of him. His parents have stayed at the Ronald McDonald House a few times, allowing the family an opportunity to all be at one place at the same time while visiting with the ill child. It's been a godsend for them to not have to worry about the two-hour commute to the hospital and back. The two family rooms offer a place of respite, relaxation and privacy within the wall of the hospital for family members of patients. I've not only been able to offer extended support to the family, but my husband and I have been able to stay with them longer due to these facilities on site. On behalf of those who have used these facilities, we say thanks to McDonald's restaurants and to their clients on another great fundraising effort. To complement custom drapes, he often makes matching cushions. For down pillows, he works with an Ottawa-based company called Cuddle Down. Pearl said his favourite aspect of the business is when his clients receive their window treatments. "It's the 'wow' I witness when people get their finished product installed," he said. LOCAL ARTISTS POP UP AT ABEL MOUNTAIN IN MERRICKVILLE PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A pop-up art gallery at a store in Merrickville is featuring three unique local artisans during the month of May. A portion of the retail space at Abel Mountain (306 St. Lawrence Street) now showcases original paintings and prints from Kemptville's Meredith Luce (Luce Ends), art jewelry pieces by Merrickville's Kenna McCall (TerrAdore), and one-of-a-kind ceramics from Johanna Jansen. Luce said the pop-up business model has proven to be very effective for the artists, and beneficial for both the gallery and the retail shop in making new demographics aware of their products. "I think it makes us more visible to people who wouldn't go to an art show; it gives us access to retail shoppers and tourists who are looking for interesting odds and ends," she said. EVERY SPRING WOULD BRING NEW LIFE TO MOTHER LONG, DREARY WINTERS WERE ALWAYS DIFFICULT DURING 1930S, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
The ditches had dried up. The fields were ready to plant. Each day I could feel the warmth of spring all around us. With the coming of the longer, sunny days, Mother became a different person. All winter, it was like someone had pulled a window-blind over her face, only occasionally letting in a bit of light. For the most part when the days
and nights were dark and dreary, it was like Mother was waiting for something good to happen. And then the winter was over, and spring was here at last. Audrey and I were sitting alone on the swing in the grape arbour. Buds were just starting to come out, and soon there would be enough leaf-cover to make a haven for us outside where we could eat a meal and get away from the hot sun, or the steaming kitchen. I could hear Mother, through the opened window, singing a wordless tune, and the sounds of pots scraping on the Findlay Oval, and dishes against dishes. A feeling of complete contentment settled over me, but I wondered about Mother's change at the end of winter and the coming of spring.
I asked Audrey if she, so much older and so much wiser than I, noticed it too, or was it just my imagination. My sister paused for a few minutes, as she gathered her thoughts. "It's in the wintertime she misses New York the most," she said. Much of her answer escaped me ... much beyond the reasoning of a five or six-year-old. But I listened anyway. "She feels shut out from the rest of the world out here in Northcote, because the car is in the drive shed up on blocks, it's a long, cold trip into Renfrew in the cutter, so she only goes in on Saturdays to deliver her eggs." She paused again, and I thought that was the end of it. But she went on. "Did you ever notice how she reads and rereads that Philadelphia Inquir-
er paper that comes in the mail? Well, that connects her with everything going on in the place she left to come to live here in Northcote. She gets lonesome for her friend Rosie, and I think she feels trapped in the winter ... looking out at so much snow, and she worries about fire burning the house down, and her relatives in Ottawa who can't come out to visit. So, you see, Mary, winter isn't the best time for our Mother." I felt the utmost contentment knowing that winter was behind us, and that Mother would once again be her happy and contented self. Her seeds had come from her order to the Steele-Briggs catalogue, and were starting to sprout in the little square boxes on a table beside the back door. The
rolled-up braided rug had been removed from the parlour door where it had been since the first blasts of winter, and we could now sit on the horsehair settee and look at picture albums or read. Soon the spring housecleaning would begin ... the kitchen curtains washed and starched, and the braided rugs hung on the fence outside and beaten with the broom and rolled up for the summer. The sun had risen overhead and was beating down through the vines of the grape arbour, and I could feel myself dozing
off, leaning against my sister. And I was overcome with a feeling of joy and contentment. Mother was back ... everything was right in my world. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? Passed away peacefully at the Smiths Falls site of the Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital on Monday, May 6, 2019, joining her dearly loved and long missed husband Don Wilson who passed away in 1994. Sophie was the beloved mother of the late Brian Wilson (2017), of Shawn (Tracy) Wilson, and the cherished and forever missed Grandmother of Josh Wilson who gave her endless pride and joy. Sophie is also survived by her sister Mary Levere, sisters-inlaw Chris Gayda & Marie Gayda as well as many dearly loved nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by Grandaughter Bayley, brothers Mike, Henry, Nick and Ed, brothersin-law Bob Levere and Victor Wilson and by her parents Stanley and Anna Gayda. Wes and his partner Kaitlin recently started their own consulting company providing layout, planning and design services for forestry operations, and supervision, audit and environmental compliance of reforestation programs. They currently live in the Salmon Arm area of BC.

Beloved father of Matthew (Kiscel) and Graham (Samantha); brother of Stephen (Diane) and Michael (Nancy), and uncle of Lindsay, Jennifer (Jessie), and Mackenzie. April 22, 1923 March 18, 2019. Mom passed away at Perth Community Care Centre on March 18, 2019 in Perth, Ontario supported by the love and care of her personal care worker, Ronda. Mom was born in Saint John, NB, to Evelyn Duston and Leo Duffy. Maureen and her late husband, Harold (deceased August 13, 2016), marked 65 years together, and while raising their children, resided in Yarmouth, NS, Aylmer, QC and Ottawa, ON. Maureen had an adventurous spirit and was always willing to follow her heart and her family, wherever they may have taken her. She was an avid reader and enjoyed activities such as bowling and linedancing in her spare time. While raising her growing family of eight children, she enjoyed working as a secretary for Symmes High School in Aylmer Quebec, and the Ottawa Boys’ and Girls’ Club. She was also a proud member of the Catholic Women’s League. Upon retirement, Maureen and Harold settled into cottage life in Griffith, Ontario where they looked forward to visits from family and friends. In later years, they established themselves in Renfrew, Ontario before joining family in Perth, Ontario. Maureen was predeceased by her cherished daughter Susan Beaupre and treasured grand- daughter Crystal Hamilton. She was the loving and respected mother of Nancy (Frank) Chartrand, of Aylmer, QC, Christopher (Rose Elaine), of Dartmouth, NS, Brian (Valery), of Lacombe, AB, Maureen (Michael) Bischoff, of McDonalds Corners, Duston (Shelley), of Carleton Place, Deborah (Patrick) Foley, of Perth, and Elizabeth (James) Desrosiers of Saskatoon, SK. She was a dear mother-in-law to Rene Beaupre and the proud grandmother and great-grandmother to many grandchildren from the east to west coasts of Canada. Maureen will be remembered for her easy- going spirit as well as her patient and loving nature. KDH FOUNDATION BOARD MARKS 40 YEARS OF FUNDRAISING Since its inception in 1979, the Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) Foundation, under the leadership of dedicated and passionate volunteers, has granted $12 million to Kemptville District Hospital toward the purchase of new medical, surgical and diagnostic equipment and to fund important capital projects such as the emergency department and surgical suite expansion in 2010 and the newly renovated clinic space in 2017. "Kemptville may not be very large, but the spirit of generosity in this community is exceptional," said Margret Norenberg, vice chair of the KDH Foundation. "I was born at KDH and supporting the hospital foundation has always been a priority for our family." To mark this important milestone, the foundation will be holding a 40th Anniversary Raffle with a cash prize of $10,000. More information and tickets for the raffle will be available in April. Keep an eye

As much as we are momentarily pausing to acknowledge the past 40 years, the Hospital equipment wish list for 2019/ 2020 includes an urgent need for a new ultrasound ($275,000) as well as replacement of all the IV pumps hospital wide ($100,000). There are distances of one, two and three kilometres around the walking track. The Kinsmen Pavilion will be open with refreshments, and a DJ. Pledges are required, but there is no minimum. Pauline Lafleur, office manager at BSR, said in an email to the Record News that the money raised from the walk will go directly to retrofitting an existing structure, so they can shelter more animals during the winter months. It will have four large stalls centrally located and will be perfect for the smaller animals such as goats, sheep, llamas, and miniature horses. "We are touched and humbled by people like Jacqui Sandor and Kathy Botham who put in the time, effort and commitment to help the animals on a scale like this," Lafleur wrote. "We have organized events ourselves and recognize all the background work that has to be done - we are very grateful." The sanctuary currently has about 115 domestic animals, including horses, llamas, donkeys, cats, dogs, rabbits, sheep, goats,
birds, emu, miniature horses, pot-bellied pigs and more. The process to adopt is simple, Lafleur noted. "We want to meet you. If it is the right fit for both home and animal, there is an adoption process and an adoption fee which goes to support the other animals at the sanctuary." Over the past 15 years, BSR has found homes for 3,000 animals, and has offered shelter to others that can't be re-homed, "but can exist only because there are so many people with good hearts that not only love animals, but who also are part of the solution." Everyone who donates time, money or skills to the shelter, is part of the sanctuary, Lafleur wrote. Most of the animals at BSR are there due to difficult
situations in people's lives, and sometimes, despite all efforts, the animal can't

Sanctuary animals will benefit from an inaugural fundraising event in Smiths Falls on June 2. Jacqui Bowick-Sandor and Kathy Botham are cochairing a walk for Big Sky Ranch (BSR) in Kemptville, a shelter that rescues animals of all kinds. It's a place that is special to Bowick-Sandor, who said "they really touched my heart" when she re-homed a dog due to separation anxiety. "We had to give her up," she said of a mastiff mix, Isabelle, who has found her forever home thanks to BSR. She said it wasn't fair to the dog, when she and her husband Bruce Sandor, were away. The dog suffered from terrible separation anxiety. Through no fault of the dog's, when a door opened one day, Isabelle bolted to greet the person on the other side of it, sending Bowick-Sandor to the floor, breaking her knee. "I don't know what was worse - the pain from a broken knee or having to give the dog to Big Sky Ranch," she said. But she knew Isabelle was in good hands, and it wasn't long before the dog found a new home where she is thriving, according to a success story posted on BSR's website, that reads in part: "We have had her for a year now ... she has filled our hearts with love. She is perfect. She comes with us everywhere she sleeps with us and the cats ... Thank you to the people who surrendered her. You must have loved her very much." It was because of this situation, that the Smiths Falls women, longtime friends and advocates, wanted to do something for the sanctuary. After learning about the sanctu-

TOUR OF SUN STUDIO HEAVY ON ROCK NOSTALGIA 'QUITE THE MECCA FOR MUSIC LOVERS': JEFF MAGUIRE JEFF MAGUIRE Column

In the far southwest corner of Tennessee is the city of Memphis, one of two major music centres in the state. At 706 Union Ave. in downtown Memphis there is a small, wedge-shaped brick building which, without the large guitar hanging like a billboard out front and an identifying label painted on the side would be just another nondescript structure in the heart of the city. This particular site however has a very spe-
cial significance for music fans. In early January 1950 a man named Sam Phillips opened a recording studio in the building. He called the premises Memphis Recording Service. It shared the premises with Sun Records, Phillips' recording label. The following year a musical act known as Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats recorded a song entitled Rocket 88 in the small studio. Rocket 88 is said to be the first rock and roll recording in music history. In turn that led management at what is now called Sun Studio to claim status as the "Birthplace of Rock and Roll." It is a claim that resonates around the world to this day prompting untold thousands of rock and roll fans to tour the studio and museum. After Elvis
Presley's estate Graceland and busy Beale Street, Sun Studio is arguably the third most prominent location in Memphis. In early March following a lengthy tour of Graceland and its surrounds Kathleen and I, in the company of our English friends Martin and Wendy Ireton, spent an enjoyable 90 minutes at Sun Studio. During our tour we saw many photos and artifacts related to blues music. The museum features a large photograph of Sam Phillips at the console in his beloved recording studio. From 1953 to 1958 Phillips passionately pursued his original dream to record blues music. The blues artists who began their careers at 706 Union Ave. included Bobby "Blue" Bland, James "Lit-
tle Milton" Campbell, James Cotton, "Big" Walter Horton, Auburn "Pat" Hare, Junior Parker and countless others. The incomparable B.B. King also launched his long and highly successful career by recording at Sun Studio. With the recording of Rocket 88 and the birth of rock and roll a whole new genre emerged from Sun Studio and took the world by storm. Leading the way was Tupelo, Miss. native Elvis Presley, the acknowledged "King of Rock and Roll." In 1954 Phillips' Sun Records released the King's first record That's All Right. The rest is history! Presley's career skyrocketed and Phillips' record label benefited hugely from his success. A tour of the small structure is a study in the
evolution of modern music. Sun Studio introduced so many wellknown entertainers from many musical genres. In addition generations of singers and musicians have been inspired by those who recorded there and especially by the songs Elvis first recorded for Sun Records. The most prominent photograph on display in the building features what is called "the Million Dollar Quartet." In fact the studio excursion is called the Million Dollar Quartet Music Tour. The photo was taken at
Sun Studio on Dec. 4, 1956 during an impromptu recording session. In the picture Elvis is seated at the keyboard looking up at, from left to right, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. As devoted rock music fans our visit is something we'll never forget. Ceramics by Merrickville artist Johanna Jansen are also showcased in the pop-up gallery, with unique patterns and colours that are achieved through experimental processes. During the Saggar Fire process, for example, colouration is achieved by the ceramic ware absorbing colourants into the clay body such as coffee grounds, banana peels and chemical oxides. The Horsehair Raku process sees the artist burning horse hair on heated ceramic. Once the pieces are at the right temperature, they are removed from the kiln and strands of horsehair are applied directly to the surface. They immediately 'fizzle' and smoke, leaving carbon marks on the surface. The smoke may also affect the surface creating a smoke 'blush.' Luce said the artists and Abel Mountain owner, Julia Provost, both reap the benefits of the pop-up business model, through crosspromotion and blending customer demographics.
"I think [Provost] benefits, not only as a small business owner having her operating costs subsidized through a sharing experience like this, but she's also getting the cross-benefit of getting our customers, just as we're getting her customers," she said. "I think our demographics are a little bit different, which is ultimately beneficial to all of us." Luce has also been decorating the Abel Mountain storefront with seasonal window paintings. "It's really a business model that creates opportunities," she continued. "For me personally, I'd never be able to afford my own retail space, and the experience gives me that much more insight into how my products sell with different demographics." Visit the artists at Abel Mountain through the month of May or again in September when they return with a fourth artist, wood turner Don Crowder. They will also be featured in the Art Show & Sale to be held June 8-9 at the Pte. Blake Williamson Memorial Hall at Riverside Park in Kemptville.

"For my paintings, being able to say that I'm being exhibited in a gallery makes a big difference in terms of establishing a reputation," she explained. Luce offers original paintings, prints, and cards. McCall agreed that the gallery space is a more appropriate fit for her creations. "My work is art jewelry, so they're one-of-a-kind pieces, and I usually cut the stones myself," she said. "At a craft show, other jewellers might be there selling pieces made in China and sometimes it's hard for people to tell the difference." McCall is a lapidary artist and silversmith, whose designs are primarily inspired by ancient Celtic and Viking cultures. She uses traditional tools and metalsmith techniques and harvests many of the gems herself. She said being featured in a retail establishment with other artists raises the level of expectation, helping shoppers to better appreciate her works. Craft shows can also be costly for artists who don't sell enough to cover the fee of hosting a table. The popup model at Abel Mountain allows artists sharing the gallery space to split on the cost of rent and take turns managing the gallery and selling each other's pieces. "It's definitely been an interesting opportunity to reach more people in general, and to reach people from all over without having to go anywhere, because we get tourists here

The Listening Room Series proudly presents the amazing, Juno Award-winning bluesman, the legendary Morgan Davis appearing Sunday, May 26, 7 p.m. at The Perth Tea Room (Perth Restaurant). Cost for admission is $20. Though he was born in Detroit, Michigan, he absorbed the raging Motown and R&B sound before his family moved him to California. Entering his learning years, he came to Canada where he lived and studied at the - now infamous - Toronto's Rochdale College, claiming that he got a higher education. He studied Delta blues, especially Robert Johnson, but also had the opportunity to see and play with players like Sunnyland Slim, Bukka White, Hubert Sumlin, Snooky Pryor and John Hammond, all helping in developing his country blues style. All this led him to become a journeyman musician, playing with the Rhythm Rockets as well as David Wilcox's first band before leading his own first band, Knights of the Mystic Sea, being constantly on the road. One of his proudest moments was backing Dr. John. Over the 50 years that he's been on the road, he's evolved to primarily being a solo player - constantly writing his own material, backing himself on six-string electric. He plays throughout the US, Europe and Canada, now calling Nova Scotia home for the past number of years. You'll love his music, his observations, his road stories as I have, the many times that I've seen him.
