Kemptville is loud and proud, get used to it. The North Grenville community made history on Saturday, June 1, by hosting its very first Pride. "I'm happy with how far society has come to accept it - gender identities and sexuality in general," said 16-year-old Taylor Swinwood, who stood with his cousin, who is also trans, on the parade route. He felt an event like Pride in Kemptville signifies a safer and more accepting place to be. Holly Brown, founder of local LGBTQ2+ advocacy group Rainbow Union, Dundas and Gren-

MAYOR SAYS NORTH GRENVILLE WAS READY Continued from page 1

ville (RUDG), who first made history in North Grenville by requesting that the municipality raise the rainbow flag to mark June as Pride Month, also organized the municipality's first Pride. Brown started the RUDG last year as a way to make her child - who has come out as gender nonconforming - feel more accepted in their community. "I'm pretty ecstatic," she said after the historic parade. "It was a great turn out. I feel like there's a shift in the culture." Korra Primeau, a trans teen living in Oxford Mills, worked on the committee to put the parade together. She was overwhelmed with how the parade and subsequent event in Riverside Park turned out. "My arms are tired, but my soul is everywhere," she said. "Being a part of this is really meaningful." Primeau moved to North Grenville from Timmins, Ont., where coming out as trans wasn't easy and was a big reason why she moved away. Primeau

said North Grenville welcomed her with open arms. "This place was my safe haven," she said. "I haven't gotten one speck of hate, even in school." Despite the prejudice she experienced after coming out two years ago, Primeau said she's stronger for it. "If I didn't go through that, I wouldn't be strong enough to walk in that parade today," she said. "We're here, we're not afraid and we want love just like everybody else." Primeau said Pride isn't just about carving a space for the LGBTQ2+ community, it's for everybody. That wasn't lost on North Greville. Hundreds gathered in Riverside Park after the parade to celebrate inclusivity. "It's beautiful to see so many people come out," said Primeau. North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford wasn't surprised that the municipality's first Pride was a success. "Everything about North Grenville said that we were ready for this," she said. "I think this community is open-hearted. I

don't think this was a huge leap. It just makes sense." Peckford said Pride is about bringing people together and educating those who might not be understanding or accepting to ensure that North Grenville is as welcoming as possible for all people, acknowledging that there are some who may not feel comfortable to live their true selves or know what

resources are available. "We don't want anyone to feel like that in our community," she said. Peckford said Pride made possible through the enthusiastic grassroots efforts of the volunteers and organizers - is an investment in the young people of the community who never want to be hindered by their sexuality or gender identity.

The Kemptville Youth Centre (KYC) held an open house on May 29 to introduce their newest staff member, Mehgan Zonneveld, to the community. Zonneveld attended Algonquin College to be a child and youth worker and helped out at KYC as a student from September to

April. Now she's filling the full-time position as programs co-ordinator. As a city girl, Zonneveld was drawn to the position for the small-town feel of Kemptville and of course, because she loves working with kids. "I liked the idea that this little town has a neutral place in close proximity to

all the schools where the youth can go," she said. Zonneveld also touched on a new collaboration that the KYC has recently initiated with the local Rotary Club. One Sunday per month, the groups will be hosting fundraising pancake breakfasts through the summer and into the fall in the B&H parking lot, where the Kemptville Farmers' Market is also held on Sundays. KYC president Jennifer Franssen said the proceeds will help cover insurance costs at the youth centre. The breakfasts will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. $6 will get you pancakes, sausages, fruit and coffee or tea. The cost is $3 for kids under five. The following dates are set for the season: July 7, Aug. 11, Sept. 8 and Oct. 12.

YOUNG LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS STEP INTO BUSINESS THIS SUMMER PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Thanks to the Leeds Grenville Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC), three local youth are stepping into the world of business this summer. Through the provincially-funded Summer Company program, now in its 19th year, the new entrepreneurs will be provided with financial support and mentorship to launch their own business and run it through the summer months. The program was launched at the Brockville Country Club on May 30 with eight students from across Leeds Grenville, of which three hail from North Grenville. During the summer, the participants will have the opportunity to meet every two weeks with a local business mentoring group

for advice and support. They will receive $1,500 to help with business startup costs in the beginning of the summer and an additional $1,500 in the fall upon successful completion of their business. The Summer Company program is offered to youth aged 15-29 who are in school or returning to school. The successful local applicants for this year's intake are all students at North Grenville District High School (NGDHS). Grade 11 student Josh Gilbey from Oxford Station will be taking nature photography and selling prints and greeting cards featuring his photos under the company name Shot to See. He got into photography when he joined a photography class in grade 10. "It became one of my biggest interests," he said. "I'll be selling prints at fairs and farmers' markets this

For photography inquiries, Gilbey can be reached at joshuagilbeyphotography@gmail.com. Another grade 11 stu-

dent, Mark Gilpin of Oxford Mills, will be digitally restoring photographs that have been water damaged or sun damaged, bringing precious memories and family history back to life.

He taught himself how to do it and became interested in starting his own business while working on a digital photography restoration project at school. Gilpin will be promot-

ing his business, Oxford Photo Restoration, through Facebook. He will also be creating post cards with his photography on them to hand out as a creative alternative to business cards. He can be reached at markgilpin641@gmail.com. Grade 10 student Katie Gilpin will be offering custom-made fly bonnets for horses as Equine Bonnet Stop. She has been a horseback rider since she was five, and said many riders like to colour scheme their horses and match their outfits. The bonnets will be crocheted by Gilpin herself, and she plans to sell her wares at horse shows and promote her business through Facebook. She can be reached at equinebonnetstop@gmail.com. LOCAL FOOD CHAMPION PROGRAM LAUNCHED Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark is encouraging everyone to join him in celebrating Local Food Week, which runs from June 3-9. To kick off the week, the Ontario government has launched a new program to celebrate people and organizations across Ontario that promote local food. The Local Food Champion program recognizes individuals, organizations and businesses who have demonstrated leadership in putting local food on the tables of the people of Ontario. "We're so fortunate to have an abundance of local

food and local food products that are grown and produced right here in Leeds-Grenville thanks to our outstanding farmers and agri-food sector," said Clark. "Local Food Week is an opportunity to celebrate and support our producers by choosing to put these delicious local flavours on our tables. “With farmers' markets opening across the riding, there's no better time to buy local." "The Local Food Champion program is a celebration of our hard-working farmers, food processors and entrepreneurs who are committed to ensuring more local food is available for everyone in their com-

munity," said Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. "When we buy local food, we are making a choice to support Ontario, our communities and our economy. I encourage everyone to support our agriculture sector by choosing local food and to enjoy all the amazing produce grown right here in Ontario." By celebrating Local Food Week and recognizing our Local Food Champions, the Ontario government is demonstrating strong support of the province's farmers and food processors, who produce more than 200 food and beverage products to feed our local communities and the world. June 1 kicked off Pride Month across the globe, and North Grenville celebrated in new ways this year by holding its very first Pride event in Kemptville. The day began with a historic flag raising ceremony which saw both the pride flag and the trans flag raised together for the first time at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. Then, the town's first Pride parade toured from the Kemptville Campus grounds through downtown Kemptville and wrapped up at Riverside Park, where the community gathered to continue the festivities. Local grassroots advocacy group, Rainbow Union, Dundas and Grenville (RUDG) organized the event. Founder Holly

Brown addressed the large turnout at the flag raising ceremony alongside her daughter, Lucy, who raised the trans flag. "You all helped make this happen," she said. "This is grassroots." The event was put on by no more than 20 volunteers, and was attended by roughly 800 participants, with 300 who marched in the parade. Brown said she's proud of her team who worked incredibly hard to pull off the event. "This is honestly the culmination of a community pride," she said. "The money has come from nowhere but the grassroots; the ground-up, and that's the way it should be." Brown touched on her reason for deciding to launch RUDG last year. "My daughter came out to me two years ago, and I thought, 'I have bought a house in the country. What

PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Three local organizations are coming together to host an early Canada Day Barbecue as part of the Rockin' at Riverside

working the grill together as the 100 People who Care. The opportunity presented itself when members of the Kemptville and District Community Association (KDCA), the organizing entity for Kempt-

ville's Canada Day celebrations this year, realized that the tents and other facilities will be set up and ready as early as the Friday prior to the holiday Monday. As such, Rockin' at Riverside is in the works with live music, food, and a beer tent to kick-off the long Canada Day week-

end. KDCA president Wendy Embleton said the aim is to keep families in town for the long weekend. Local live music co-ordinator Herb Cloutier (Jamming Around Man Productions) is lining up all local musical acts to entertain. He co-ordinated last year's successful Mu-

sic in the Park event which served as a warm-up to the Kemptville Live Music Festival. There will also be a vendor market on-site. 100 People who Care will serve light snacks before they break out the hotdogs and hamburgers at 4 p.m. The barbecue will run all night while brews are flowing until 10 p.m.

THANKS FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE Though Paramedic Services Week 2019 was observed May 29 to June 1, our Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service should constantly be celebrated for the vital public services they provide to our citizens 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On a daily basis, we see and hear stories about the various ways our paramedics help improve the health of our overall communities, as well as save lives and risk their own in the name of keeping people safe and responding to emergency situations. Not only do paramedics provide compassionate emergent medical care for those who call 9-1-1, they work with or lead health care teams to keep people at home and out of the hospital emergency room through many innovative and dynamic community paramedic programs. They also play a key role in public education about prehospital emergency care. The Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service is a division within the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, reporting to counties council and the joint services committee. It is made up of 60 full-time and 52 part-time primary and advanced care paramedics, including a chief, deputy chief, five supervisors and a commander of professional standards. The service, established in 2001, covers an area of more than 3,350 square kilometres, responding to over 20,000 calls a year. In 2018, that number topped 24,878. Leeds Grenville's emergency response fleet consists of 15 Crestline Fleetmax ambulances. Six permanent stations (two in Brockville, on each in Kemptville, Elgin, Gananoque and Johnstown) are staffed 24 hours with a goal of providing equal access to all counties' residents. There's been a rising increase in calls for service throughout Leeds Grenville, with them jumping by more than four per cent a year since 2010. Brockville has the highest number of calls in the counties and the fastest response rate. Locally, the service has a 8:38 response time in North Grenville and 18:43 in Merrickville-Wolford. The service is committed to continually enhancing the training of its paramedics and undertakes two continuing medical education programs each year, including the recertification program for primary and advanced care paramedics. It also supports the Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Program, which provides a database of PADs across the county. There are currently 209. It is important to raise awareness of the enormous contribution paramedic services' staff members make and to recognize the contribution these medical professionals make to maintain our safe and healthy communities. Thank you to our paramedics for your dedication to saving lives and protecting our community.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY MPP SAYS BETTER BROADBAND, CELL INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDED Dear Editor: Residents of LeedsGrenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes know well that the expansion of broadband is a critical gateway for the digital economy. In a digital world, being disconnected means being disadvantaged. Here in eastern Ontario, we are all too familiar with cellular dead zones. Our government committed to improving cellular coverage in the election. I was proud to have the Minister of Infrastructure, the Hon. Monte McNaughton, in our riding on May 17 to announce that we are following through with that commitment. We are committing $71 million to the Eastern Ontario Regional Network's project - one that would virtually eliminate cellular gaps in Leeds and Grenville and across the region. Let's not forget that this project is also expected to generate up to 3,000 jobs

over 10 years and potential revenues of $420 million. I am happy to say: Promise made, promise kept. However, in order to go ahead, this worthwhile project still requires the support of the federal government. We are all waiting for them. Earlier in May, the federal infrastructure minister posted a news release claiming Ontario's priorities were his priorities. The people in my riding of Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes need more than words from their politicians. They need action - and they need it now. Existing and planned networks in our region are not robust enough to meet increased demand. Eastern Ontario needs both coverage and capacity to thrive. Our government is committed to protecting what

matters most for people of Ontario and residents of Leeds and Grenville. We will continue to work with all levels of government to deliver reliable broadband service, which is so critical to both our economic growth and public safety.

READER WANTS TO SEE MORE INVESTMENT FOR FAMILIES Dear Editor: The following is in response to the May 16 article in the Kemptville Advance, 'New docks, benches to be installed in Kemptville.' On docks and benches, but not everyone owns a boat and why not a beach for kids and families to enjoy? I really think Kemptville needs to invest more in things for families to enjoy.

ter, where networks constantly overlap, and where people step up to help each other each and every day." Peckford also spoke of the hardships faced by those belonging to the LGBTQ2+ community, such as judgment, misunderstanding, and discrimination. She reported that in the last decade, 33 per cent of LGBTQ2+ youth have attempted suicide, and in 2010, 47 per cent of trans youth in Ontario contemplated suicide, of which 19 per cent had made a previous attempt. "While there is no doubt that our schools and our cultural norms are evolving in positive ways, they simply don't move quickly enough in a world where LGBTQ2 folks remain a distinct minority and the long history of abuse and criminalization looms large," Peckford said. "We stand here today for all of North Grenville, whether or not you choose to be here, because by building a

THE ISSUE: HOMOPHOBIA AND TRANSPHOBIA IN RURAL COMMUNITIES. LOCAL IMPACT: NORTH GRENVILLE MAKES HISTORY HOSTING ITS FIRST PRIDE EVENT IN KEMPTVILLE, RAISING BOTH PRIDE AND TRANS FLAGS more inclusive and open-hearted community, everyone benefits." The crowd then heard from Warner Schaettgen, a 12-year-old member of the LGBTQ2+ community. "I live in a rural community, kind of just like this one, and I am transgender," she said. Schaettgen said she has faced bullying and discrimination for her gender identity, but she's

proud of who she is. "I can't say enough about how important it is for the LGBTQ2+ people to have support from family, friends, and the community," she said. "Also, days like this, so they can feel a sense of belonging." Schaettgen said many LGBTQ2+ people spend the majority of their time fighting to prove their identity or trying to be accepted. "Wear your identity like armour, and it can never be used against you," she advised. "Be proud of who you are. Celebrate who you are." Many North Grenville residents and families, council members, business leaders, police officers, drag queens, and more observed the inaugural raising of the pride and trans flags in front of the municipal centre. "We thank you for being here today and we thank you for being here tomorrow because it's not over," said Brown. "This is just the beginning."

many members chose to benefit CMHLG as they've recently launched a mental health and addictions walk-in clinic in town for children and youth. The clinic is open on Wednesdays, serving children and youth aged 18 and under from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Though they were not selected, the youth centre and Community Living will both receive a $500 donation for their presentations. TNIM PRESENTS 'THEATRE IN THE MAKING' JUNE 8 This spring, Theatre Night in Merrickville (TNIM) hosted a two-weekend workshop on playwriting, facilitated by Michael Clipperton, an accomplished director, adjudicator, performer and teacher. Nine budding playwrights came to the first workshop, some with scripts underway, others with concepts and plots ready to be hatched. Much writing and enthusiastic critiquing ensued. By the second weekend, the next stage of TNIM's innovative workshop concept was underway with participants who were ready and willing to do so (there were five of them) began honing a 15-20-minute segment of their new plays to be mounted as a "staged reading" for a paying audience. The casting call went out

and playwrights became directors. The five brave souls are: Andrea Jermacans, Jim Perkins, Margaret Shearman, Brian Kennedy and Vicki Graham. Scenes from their six new plays - comedies, historical dramas and mysteries - will be presented on Saturday, June 8 at a onenight-only event with food, drink and an eclectic evening of Theatre in the Making at the Merrickville United Art Centre, the village's wonderful new venue, across from the blockhouse, next to lock. As if supporting budding playwrights weren't enough reason to come out for good food and entertainment in this beautiful setting, there is a special treat at the end of the evening: the audience will be invited to make a selection. The selected play

IN SEARCH OF HIDDEN TREASURES AT HEY DAY DIANA FISHER OFFERS TIPS ON THE KEMPTVILLE TRADITION DIANA FISHER Column

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Since I was a little girl, I have saved up my allowance and looked forward to Hey Day every year. Eastern Ontario's biggest garage sale is a Kemptville tradition. But there is an art to getting the most out of this event, so listen up and I'll give you some tips. For the last 50 years or so, Hey Day has been taking over what is now the North Grenville Curling Club (formerly the Kemptville Community Centre or arena) on the second weekend in June. They start receiving donations on the Wednesday before the sale weekend. They will take your gently used (or heavily used but still in great shape) furniture, appliances, clothing, electronics, toys, sports equipment and books. Stations are set up all around the arena, with each booth displaying a different category of stuff. Everything that doesn't fit on a display table gets shoved into a box under the table (more about that later). The lineup of bargain hunters stretches around the building and down the street well before the doors are opened wide on Friday evening. A security guard stands at the entrance to bar entry of anyone who isn't labelled with a Volunteer button. Sidebar: now, you might

think that the best quality items will be discovered by the early birds: the people who stand in line and get into the sale first. But here's the thing - as the sales take off and the tables begin to clear of their wares, the volunteers reach under the tables and pull those extra boxes out. So you never know where the treasures are going to be found. Is the really cool vintage jacket on the rack already or still waiting to be uncovered? Keep flipping through those old vinyl records there may be a diamond in the haystack, as they say. Like Finnerty's Auction on a Friday night and your neighbourhood yard sale on a Saturday morning, Hey Day attracts semi-professional bargain hunters from all over the place. Many of the licence plates in the parking lot are from Quebec. The hunt for the best stuff can get competitive. It gets hot in there. In fact, it's so crowded when Hey Day gets into full swing on its first night, I tend to avoid the evening entirely. I will take my chances and arrive early Saturday morning for Day 2. Usually the air has cleared considerably and all of the mothball aroma, dust and allergens from people's attics have drifted away by then. When you arrive in the morning, it's like a whole new sale, with new things on the tables that were not in sight the night before. But there's a difference there are now only 5 hours left to this sale, and the volunteers are ready to let things go en masse so that they have less to pack up and cart away as donations. Buy yourself a paper bag for $3 and watch for the signs. Soon a paper bag will

be hoisted over the sports equipment table: head over there and fill your bag with golf balls and baseball gloves. It's a great place for kids to shop for Father's Day. Next, the small appliance and electronics table raises the paper bag sign. You will need to buy another $3 bag. Fill it with a coffee maker for the cottage, a toaster for your college student, and a radio for the garage. You may be distracted by the many things to see and buy, but you must also remember to pick up at least one of each of the raffle tickets on sale. You could win tickets to a Sens game, a fine jewelry set, or you could be the biggest winner of them all when you walk away with half of the 50/50 pot. The proceeds from our annual Hey Day garage sale go to the Ladies' Auxiliary at the Kemptville District Hospital. It's their biggest fundraiser of the year and has allowed the group to support many of the things at the hospital that make life a little more pleasant for patients and their families. I'm honoured to be your Saturday MC at Hey Day again this year. We aren't just shopping - we are giving new life to old things and we are also donating to our local hospital. Join me on the concrete this weekend! Wear comfortable shoes, bring your allowance, and take a dose of antihistamine before you come over. HAPPY 88th BIRTHDAY June 3, 2019 Phyllis Barrie WithLove and Best Wishes For Good Health and Happiness

(October 11, 1941-May 16, 2019) Survived by his beloved wife Vivienne (Kwissa), his brothers-in-law Donald Bedford (Christine) and Richard Kwissa (Joan); his nieces Tracy and Tobi Kwissa and their children Emily, Fletcher and Megan, Sophie and Alexander. Predeceased by his parents John and Bertha (Messenger) and his brother Raymond. Howard emigrated from England to Ottawa in September, 1967, just in time to celebrate his 26th birthday in October and enjoy Expo 67 in Montreal. His first year was lived apartment sharing with a friend who was spending Howard’s contributions to their living expenses behind his back and disappeared back to England when found out. As co-signer, Howard had to take on a large debt for which he wasn’t responsible. Luckily for me, he moved in with my family as a boarder “until he could get things sorted out” and we married two and a half years later in 1971. Our first year of married life was spent traveling to British Columbia and back to Ontario while Howard audited the General Tire stores in the western provinces. The New Westminster stay was particularly nice, lasting close to five months. We stayed at a hotel bachelor apartment directly across the street from the store. It was like having our first home and I could look from the 4th floor balcony to see Howard crossing the road. We traded in our first “baby”, a 1967 Pontiac Firebird that had barely got us through the Rocky Mountains from Edmonton, for a 1970 Pontiac GTO muscle car. I think that was always our favourite set of wheels and earned me my only speeding ticket! We bought our first house in the countryside in 1979 and Howard put his enjoyment of reading DIY books to good use in building decks, raised gardens, and creating lovely flower beds. His interests moved more to the indoors when home and work computers evolved. He had a natural skill working on the computer and helping others with work and home projects. Howard and I had always shared a mutual love of music and a large accomplishment on his part was to create the first extensive website on jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. He spent hours and months inputting information as a tribute to the great musician and received much recognition and appreciation for his efforts. It surprised me that eventually he couldn’t go on with the project. I thought it was because other sites on Monk were appearing on the Internet but now I think it was because he was slowly becoming ill. Howard retired from his work with the City of Ottawa, Social Services, in 2007. He described it as being his “last job and his best job”. I thought he would have many years ahead of him to enjoy a well-deserved retirement and that his need to start walking with a cane was just from age and fatigue. We went through several house moves in a short space of time trying to downsize and improve our finances. Howard was one of the brightest people I knew but was suddenly having difficulty keeping the car from drifting to the right when he drove, repeating things I had just said as though they were original thoughts, always saying “I’m just getting old”. It took two years to convince our family doctor that something was wrong. It took the neurologist just a matter of minutes to diagnose the problem as PSP, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. I think we just looked blank at the diagnosis having never heard of it before but I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach by the words, “I’m very sorry”. I knew then that this was something that couldn’t be fixed and our time remaining would be drastically different. PSP is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s Disease. Sadly, there is no cure and as the name says, it’s progressive. It’s main symptoms are loss of balance and falling backward, difficulty looking up and down, eye sensitivity to light, and weakening of the throat muscles leading to pneumonia. Howard battled the disease for eight years but eventually made the choice to let it run its course. His body wasted away and he had no strength left. He spent his last year living at the Hilltop Manor, Merrickville. The staff did their best to keep him as comfortable as possible in his final days and marvelled at how long he held on. I think it was a great unhappiness for both me and them when he let go. Our time together wasn’t always perfect, Papa, but one thing I told you often will always be true: You always were and always will be my very best friend. I will miss you every day. I hope your suffering is over and your spirit is with past family, friends, and the many lovely “critters” that shared our lives. All my love, Vivienne In lieu of flowers donations in Memory of Howard may be made to the Cure PSP organization. Arrangements entrusted to the, Byers Funeral Home, South Mountain (613-989-3836). Rathwell, Mary Eleanor (nee Nixon)

Mary passed away on Tuesday, May 28th, 2019 in Ottawa, at the age of 94 years. Beloved wife of the late Jack Rathwell, Mary was the adored mother of Cynthia, and cherished “Bubby” to Sophia and Sonja Swettenham. She will be missed, as well, by nieces Marlene Vlaanderen and Sharon Nixon. Mary was predeceased by her parents (William Nixon and Charlotte (Miller), brother Hugh (late Evelyn) and, recently, brother Jim (Iris). Born in Peterborough but raised in Perth, Mary maintained a strong connection to the town and fond memories of her youth with her extended family in the Miller, Hutchings and Nixon families, and with close neighbours. She passed on her love of Perth to her family, and inspired each of us with her individualism, determination and devotion. Her family meant the world to her, as she did to them. Family and friends are invited to a reception to celebrate Mary’s life at 2413 Scotch Line Road, at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, June 16th, 2019. In her memory, donations to The Great War Memorial Hospital would be appreciated.

Brown, Roy Gilbert

July 27, 1936 May 28, 2019 After a brief illness, Roy passed away peacefully at Queensway Carleton Hospital on Tuesday, May 28, 2019. Loving husband of the late Esther and good friend to his first wife Patricia. Loving father of Greg (Lisa) and Paul and loving stepfather to Alan and Marnie. Special grandfather to Kyle and Meredith and step-grandfather to Ben, Jackson, and Will. Dear son of the late Roy and Eula Brown and predeceased by his brother Ray (Mare). After completing a Master of Engineering degree at Queen’s University, Roy went to work as a P.Eng. at the Acres firm in Niagara Falls, deciding to work in the field rather than take an offer to complete a PhD in structural engineering at Lehigh University. Over the next 60 years, Roy worked at engineering and structural steel firms in Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and ultimately, established his own engineering consulting company based in Stratford, Ontario. Over his career, Roy worked on some of the most significant engineering projects across Canada and internationally - including hydroelectric dams, cranes servicing container ports, and countless structures that define the skylines in many cities. He did his good work into his 80s and only retired from engineering in January 2019. Roy, like his brother and his wife, was involved with Rotary in Stratford and was honoured with Rotary’s highest award, the Paul Harris Award. At Roy’s request, and in his typical unassuming manner, there will be no service. A private family gathering on Corn Hill Beach in Cape Cod (Roy’s favourite place) will be convened in the coming weeks. Donations in Roy’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. With great sadness, the loving family of Ann, announce her passing, peacefully at home on May 27, 2019, with her family by her side, at the age of 76. Beloved wife of the late Gord for 50 years and loving mother of Stephen (Caroline) Sharp and Mary-Lou (Stuart) Vandervaart. Beloved and proud Granann and Nan to Margaux (Reagan), Cassie (Christina), Cole (Holly), Clarke (Grace) and Cooper. Ann is survived by her loving family, sisters Emma (Walt) Rodway, Bev (Frank) Antle and brother Eric (Ev) Cole and many kind and special nieces and nephews. Ann was born in Victoria, Newfoundland on December 28, 1942. She moved to Toronto at the young age of 17 and began working in banking, where she continued throughout most of her career. She met and married Gord in Toronto in 1964. Work took them to many locations across Canada, finally settling to raise their children in Riverview N.B. After retiring from the CIBC, Ann and Gord moved to Carleton Place to spend time with their family. With their many moves, Ann left special friends all across Canada, from Toronto, Orangeville and Beckwith to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Many thanks for the special care our Mom received from so many including Dr. Drake, Jessica and the nurses at Bayshore, Marjorie and the staff from the Mills, the UCW ladies, and the team at the Ottawa Civic Medical Day Care Unit that always were so kind to both our parents. Ann was especially thankful to have been such a huge part of her five grandchildren’s lives. She often said she couldn’t believe she was so lucky to be able to do that. She was so very proud of the young adults they have become and the exciting paths that each of them is taking in their lives. Ann was fully aware of the special place that she held in the lives of her grandchildren, children and their partners, as they showed her with their words, their actions, and their time. Her heart was full, and she was so thankful. A Life Celebration will take place July 6. If you so desire, a donation in her memory can be made to the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Canada Inc at alpha1canada.ca.

IMPORTANCE OF LIBRARIES TO BE HIGHLIGHTED AT JUNE 22 FUNDRAISER PROCEEDS TO SUPPORT DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAM AT NORTH GRENVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com In the midst of provincial funding cuts to libraries and the vital services that they provide, the Friends of the North Grenville Public Library are planning a fundraiser to raise money for a digital literacy program at the library in Kemptville. An Evening at the Library, set for Saturday, June 22, will feature live music, food, a cash bar, a silent auction, and four presentations from local authors and community leaders on the important role that libraries play in their communities. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Friends of the North Grenville Public Library is an independent charity that raises funds for library books and programs. "Our

mandate is to support new initiatives to keep our library progressive and appealing to our community," said Barbara Rousseau, a member and one of the fundraiser organizers. In order to stay current with the needs of the North Grenville community, Rousseau said the library needs to offer digital literacy programs. "From a young age, the ability to read and write a

machine language will allow our youth to remain on track with their peers," she said. "The shrinking size of the world in regard to connectivity is another use of digital literacy." With the right technology and tools, Rousseau says one can reach out globally to share ideas and work on projects in the coding world. The main purpose of the Weed Control Act R.S.O. 1990, is to reduce the impact of noxious weeds on the industries of agriculture and horticulture. Under the Weed Control Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter W.5 Sections 3, 13, 16 and 23, you are requested to destroy all noxious weeds and weed seeds on your property. In Urban Areas, Sections 3, 13, 16 and 18 do not apply to noxious weeds or weed seeds that are far enough away from any land used for agriculture or horticultural purposes, as they do not interfere with that use. All properties within the County of Lanark are hereby requested to be in compliance with the Weed Control Act by the 14th day of June, 2019, and throughout the season. After June 14, 2019, the County of Lanark Weed Inspector may enter upon the said lands and may cause any noxious weeds discovered to be destroyed, charging the cost against the land, as set out in the Act. The auction will include gift certificates to Salamander's and the Brigadoon, a basket of accessories from Jac's Boutique, goodies from Blue Gypsy Wines, and much more up for grabs. Guest speakers at the event will discuss their unique experience and appreciation of libraries, including former schoolteacher Chris Morgan and local authors Michael Blouin, Tom Graham and Jen Gilroy. "Today's libraries are more than just a place to pick up books or work on a school project," said Rousseau. "Purposely located in the centre of town, the North Grenville Public Library offers public access to computers, printers, scanners, and wireless connections, but with today's fast-paced and ever-changing technology, these things aren't enough anymore." Tickets to the event are available for $15 and can be purchased at the library, located at 1 Water Street, Kemptville.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
