out and cutting up the ribs in dramatic fashion on Sunday, June 9. "All the ribs are the same. It's the sauce that makes the difference." Their new company has five sauces it has created, and they were handing out samples - the first hit was a regular sauce, followed by adding another spicy sauce that chilled the taste, for a tasty/sweet flavour. "When the Latin flavour kicks in along with the down south sweetness it will give your taste buds a wonderful experience," the blurb for the sauce states on the Gonzalez Food website. "(It's) legit food science," said Zain. "The hot sauce we made balances it (the regular sauce) out," he said of their "secret seasoning." When handing out the sauce samples, he claimed,

some patrons said that they enjoyed the sauce, but would try other tables, too. "I know you all are going to come back," he teased them. The festival also boasted regular rib festival favourites well-known in the ar-

ea, like Ribs Royale and newcomers Big M's Smokin' Bones BBQ, as well as a new, Toronto-based Jamaican-Canadian rib experience, Brickyard BBQ, which saw chef Reuben Riley singing along to hot love songs as he basted his ribs.

Environmentally conscious residents in North Grenville can now help create a cleaner community and enhance the environment by adopting a public park or trail to help the municipality maintain. At the June 4 committee of the whole meeting, staff from the parks, recreation and culture department recommended that council pass an Adopt-a-Park/ Trail Program policy. Last year, the policy was presented to the active transportation committee to allow those interested to take on a leadership role by adopting a park or recreational trail. The program was designed to encourage organizations, businesses and individuals to volunteer and assist the municipality with the enhancement of local parks and trails through clean-up, monitoring and reporting hazards, and financial contribution toward improvements. Director of parks, recre-

ation and culture Mark Guy reported that roughly 50 km of trails is owned by the municipality, including nine trails within the Ferguson Forest Centre and those within the Kemptville Campus. Other community trails include Kemptville's multiuse pathway along County Road 44, Waterfront Trail through Curry Park, the North Grenville Rail Trail, Libby Island Trail on the Rideau River, the Rideau Canal: Tip to Tip Trail, Chalet Loop within Limerick Forest South, and the South Gower Fitness Trail at South Gower Park. The Adopt-a-Park/Trail Program is a community partnership between the parks, recreation and culture department and interested residents and community groups in North Grenville. It encourages the active involvement in the preservation, beautification and enhancement of local parks and trails while promoting civic pride. The municipal insurance policy treats all indi-

HEY DAY RAISES RECORD-BREAKING $34,000 FOR KDH The crowds lined up early Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8 in anticipation of another incredible Hey Day. This year marked the 59th anniversary. Once you get past the crowds and the bargains, this Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) Auxiliary major fundraising event is a celebration of community and support. This year's Hey Day was a success on so many different levels. The money raised this year was done so, one donation and one dollar at a time. For 59 years the KDH Auxiliary has organized this gigantic yard sale to raise funds for hospital equipment. This year, more than $34,000 was raised for the hospital; a record-breaking number. The funds will be used to purchase medical Smart Beds at KDH. Shoppers came from around the region to snap

up bargains, treasures and collectibles. Children and parents swarmed the toy section; weary shoppers took a break to enjoy a coffee and slice of homemade pie at Lil's Canteen. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, we were honoured to have Mayor Nancy Peckford announce the raffle winners. The big winner of the 50/50, Ian Bell, collected $2,744; a nice welcome for the new Kemptville resident. The silent auction winners were contacted and collected their treasures as well. "I am proud to be part of the Kemptville District Hospital Auxiliary and all the amazing fundraising they continue to do in support of our local hospital and their efforts to enhance the patient experience," said Jolene Stover, member of the auxiliary. "We are an extremely lucky community to have such an

incredible facility accessible to our families. We need to continue to support the many fundraising efforts that go on throughout the year. There is no government funding available to the hospital to purchase what it needs to care for the patients. Largely due to funds raised at Hey Day, the auxiliary has over the years contributed over an astounding $1.3 million to the Kemptville hospital." We want to say thank you to the people who make this happen each year. We rely 100 per cent on the donation of time. Volunteers are the foundation of Hey Day. It was started by volunteers and is orchestrated every year, by volunteers, young and old. Without them, there would not be a Hey Day. We had an overwhelming 282+ volunteers come out to help with everything from set up to

The items sold at Hey Day are donations by North Grenville residents, who did their best to donate only usable items in good repair, and to respect the list of items that we could not accept. We had everything from tools, furniture, small appliances, clothing, plants, toys, housewares, jewelry, antiques, crafts, sporting goods, treasures, books, and the list goes on! There was definitely something for everyone. Thank you to the volunteers from the curling club, Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Kiwanis among others who provided the muchneeded manpower to help set up on Tuesday. Hey Day is not a sophisticated revenue generating event run by professionals - it is an auxiliary fundraiser put together by dedicated volunteers doing their individual best to help out however and wherever they can, to raise as much money as possible for the KDHA and the hospital. It is an exhausting yet rewarding task. To say the KDH Auxiliary is proud of the volunteer community is an understatement. In addition to thanking

Paulina Hrebacka/Torstar The Leeds Grenville Small Business Enterprise Centre has opened a part-time office in Kemptville to offer business support to local entrepreneurs. Pictured, lead consultant/manager Wendy Onstein is settled into her new space within the North Grenville Municipal Centre. Her plan is to visit all of the service providers in the Kemptville area and make connections between businesses that can help one another and work together. "It's a pretty powerful business community out here," she said. Some entrepreneurs in North Grenville who have utilized all that LGSBEC has to offer include Rebecca Cronk of Get Cronk'd Fitness, Karen Quigley of Saltastic, Elenora Luberto of JEMMAN Photography, and Shulamit Ber Levtov of Compassionate Support for Stressful Times, among others. The LGSBEC offers the popular Summer Company program to high school students who are interested in becoming an entrepreneur and want to try it out. Through that program, the centre provides students with funding, mentorship, training and other supports as they run their own

business through the summer. The program has seen more than 160 participants in over 16 years. In its fifth year, the Starter Company Plus program provides funding, business training, mentoring and coaching through local entrepreneurs, with continued ongoing coaching for up to six months and access to additional funding as required. From 2017 to 2019, the program trained 68 people in the Business Plan Boot Camp, issued 46 grants totalling $210,000, and helped 34 businesses launch, 25 expand, and three to be purchased. The LGSBEC also supports local entrepreneurs through annual networking events, workshops and seminars. Many of North Grenville's entrepreneurs have benefitted from programs, support, and resources offered by the Leeds Grenville Small Business Enterprise Centre (LGSBEC), based out of Brockville, during the launch or expansion of their businesses. Now, LGSBEC has opened a part-time office in Kemptville to better serve the local business scene. Every other Tuesday, lead consultant and manager Wendy Onstein will be in her office within the North Grenville Municipal Centre to offer her services. She said the decision was made when the centre saw a demand in North Grenville for more business support and advice. "We help business start, grow, expand or exit; we look at all facets," said Onstein. "When the new council came on board, there was a real willingness to work with us." Onstein and business development co-ordinator Jeanette Johnston had made a presentation to council and the proposal to try a six-month pilot was accepted. The agreement sees the municipality investing in the LGSBEC, as opposed to having the centre as a tenant. "It's worked out really well, and I can't believe the response," she said. "We were seeing people from North Grenville coming to Brockville for services, which is fine, but if we can bring them here, then they're more apt to access it." Onstein is also open to doing business visits. She is currently seeing many locals for consultations on marketing support.

MUNICIPAL DRUG STRATEGY COULD REDUCE HOMELESSNESS, BULLYING POLICE SERVICES BOARD RECOMMENDS MUNICIPALITY INVESTIGATE PLANET YOUTH PROGRAM PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com North Grenville's council and police services board (PSB) are in talks about the establishment of a municipal drug strategy. The matter was brought to the June 4 committee of the whole meeting when the PSB recommended that North Grenville investigate the Planet Youth program currently in place and affecting positive change in Lanark County. The program serves as a model for success in steering youth away from addiction and crime, as well as alleviating rates of youth homelessness and bullying. Planet Youth is an evi-

Councillor and PSB member Doreen O'Sullivan reported that the program began in Iceland in 1998 with 42 per cent of grade 10 students claiming that they had been drunk in the last 30 days, which dropped down to two per cent by 2017. The numbers also reflected significant decreases in tobacco and cannabis use.

Bullying in Iceland also dropped from 35.3 per cent in 1999 to 7.5 per cent in 2016, and theft dropped from 31.6 per cent to 13.9 per cent in the same period. Planet Youth is a primary prevention program, which aims at delaying or preventing the onset of substance use among teens by getting the entire community involved in making sure they have something better to do. Kristin Strackerjan attended the Lanark County Municipal Drug Strategy steering committee meeting in April, where she learned that there was no existent framework in place for a drug strategy in North Grenville. "It became very apparent that it should be something we are working toward in partnership with the PSB, public health, and municipal representatives," she said. "An absolutely worthy endeavor." Mayor Nancy Peckford added that the Mayoral Task Force on Affordable Housing, which met on June 3, heard from a youth homelessness group which reported that homelessness in and around North Grenville is increasing, and drug use is one of the major contributors. "The realities are that without a municipal drug strategy in our community, the phenomena of things like homelessness will increase," she said. happily marked a number of females as his mates. The following spring, we watched to see what kind of lambs the ewes would have. The first few, sired by King of the barnyard, Rambo himself, had the usual bleach-white fleece and curls. Then, one morning, a little black-faced lamb appeared. I kid you not, the rest of the ewes and a few older lambs approached carefully to check him out. But perhaps the most interesting reaction was that of his father, Philip. The black-faced ram was just meandering out of the barnyard to see what all the bleating was about when he spotted the lamb. The first little lamb he had seen in this new place, who looked exactly like him. His gait changed then, to more of a strut, as he went over to sniff and poke and check this lamb over from floppy black ears to wiggly black tail. From then on, Philip seemed to have a bit higher stature on the farm. He had done his job, sired a few lambs, and made his mark on the flock. Rambo didn't perceive him as a threat, so he lived in peace the rest of his days. We have other almosthuman moments on the farm when the bull has gone over to examine his new calf - but the moment when Philip discovered his own tribe is perhaps the most memorable to me. When I think about Father's Day on the farm of course I remember all of the fabulous Sunday dinners, grilled to perfection by the man himself, the Farmer. Friends and family gather along our 16foot picnic table on the porch he built himself. He is the centre of our home and he pulls the family together every weekend over a warm meal cooked with love. So of course we like to make a big deal out of celebrating him. He is usually feted with some good books (second hand is fine; he isn't picky - and they come with recommendations), red wine, Timmies cards and the occasional cigar, which he enjoys in intervals, while riding his lawn tractor. My last Father's Day with my own Dad was in 2007. At the time we didn't even know he was sick. It wasn't until August of that year that he decided his back pain was actually worth a trip to the hospital. It turned out to be pancreatic cancer and an aortic aneurysm. In September we learned he was terminal. This is when I married the Farmer and our weekly Sunday dinners began soon afterward. That winter, my family circled around my father, spending as much time with him as possible. Although it sucks to lose a parent so early in life (he was just 66), we were blessed with the knowledge that the end was coming soon - so that we focused on the important conversations and left no

love unsaid. Elsewhere on the farm, we have animal fathers but just a few. One year we brought a new ram to join our flock. He was a bit different from the rest of our pure-white Dorset and Rideau family. As the Farmer backed the truck into the barnyard, he gathered an audience of curious four-legged onlookers. He opened the back window, pulled down the hatch and out popped a floppyeared Blackface ram. You could almost hear the communal gasp of surprise. The females actually took off in a wave of white fluff and the other ram stamped his hoof in challenge. They weren't sure of what to think about this animal who appeared to be like them, but wearing some sort of face mask. The new ram signalled his unwillingness to fight by lowering his eyes and trotting off after the females. After a few minutes of chasing the girls in circles and trying in vain to make new friends, our poor little Philip (I wanted to name him Floppy but the Farmer said that might give him a complex) retreated to a shady corner of the barnyard and lay down to sleep away his stress. This routine continued for several days. Then finally, one day I looked out the window and there was Philip, lying in the shade of a huge boulder, with two females on either side of him. He looked quite pleased with himself. And later that season when the Farmer tied a colourful piece of chalk around Phil's neck, the funnylooking floppy-eared ram

PLEASE, GIVE TURTLES A 'BRAKE' This time of year, turtles are prevalent on our roadways, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada is asking motorists to give turtles a "brake." We are now in an active period when turtles are moving from their usual habitats and motorists encounter turtles on busy roads in major centres, on back roads or on the way to the cottage. Turtles are vulnerable especially between now and October. Like other reptiles, turtles are cold-blooded so basking on gravel, sandy road sides or warm asphalt feels good on cool spring days. Adult turtles set out to mate and find nesting sites. In late summer and early fall, newly-hatched turtles travel from their nest to a nearby wetland or water body. While a turtle's shell can protect them from predators, it's no match for a car. Turtle deaths are a major issue in some parts of the country, and all eight turtle species in Ontario are at risk. The Blanding's turtle is more endangered than pandas. In Quebec, six turtle species are provincially designated as threatened or vulnerable. When a turtle is struck by a car, it can have a bigger impact than just the loss of that one turtle. Studies show just a five per cent increase in annual mortality can put an entire population at risk of decline. We encourage motorists to slow down when they see a turtle on the road and check to be sure they can safely steer around it. If you want to help, ensure your safety is paramount on the roadways. Move the turtle in the direction that it's crossing. For smaller turtles like Blanding's and Midland painted, simply pick them up and carry them across the road. If you're helping a snapping turtle, be wary of their spiked tails and sharp snouts. They can be heavy too - up to 75 pounds. To move these guys, lift them using their "handles" on either side of their shell by the tail and move them like a wheelbarrow across the road. Some people may carry turtle gear in their vehicle. A shovel and a car mat are handy to help guide the turtle. Pushing or shoving turtles across roads with your feet or sticks isn't advisable. Their shells aren't as thick underneath, and rough pavement can do a lot of damage. Other threats to turtles include habitat loss, invasive species and illegal collection for the pet trade. Whether you're a turtle helper or you drive on past them, please just be kind to them.

My German shepherd, Lexi, tested positive recently for Lyme. I'm trying to let that sink in. I'm diligent with her Lyme prevention medication, and I check for ticks after each outing. Already this year, I have removed two blacklegged ticks - the carrier of Lyme disease. But hearing those words from the vet tech was a little unreal. She can't be positive for Lyme - I do all the right things. I even spray my hands with a concoc-

tion of essential oils made specifically for tick and flea prevention, and rub her down with it for added protection. I spray myself. Lexi's annual vet check was otherwise a good one. She'd gained a small amount of weight, but it was a long, cold winter and there was not a lot of running, due to copious amounts of ice. I'd rather deal with a 0.2-pound weight gain than with a broken leg. Our spring vet visit is one where we discuss flea and tick prevention. Lexi gets her shots for rabies, distemper, parvovirus and leptospirosis. I was asked about a blood test for heartworm where they could also check for Lyme disease she's never had either blood test, because she's only three, so they went ahead with it. By the time I got home, I received the call from the tech confirming my worst fears. Lyme disease has

been bad already this year. She tells me another blood test (she drew enough blood) will confirm if it's an active case of Lyme disease, which would need to be treated with antibiotics, or if it's something she's had for a while and is not active it may never be active. Of course, no question: further testing, please. Lexi is not showing signs of Lyme disease, like a fever, loss of appetite, reduced energy or lameness. If it's not active, we'll check again in six months. Monthly doses a chewable treatment is the course of action at this point. Be diligent with tick checks. If caught early, your dog can live a long and healthy life. Laurie Weir is the news editor for the Smiths Falls Record News and the Perth Courier. She can be reached at ljweir@metroland.com, when she's not checking for ticks.

The federal government is committing $15 million over four years to Forests Ontario in support of their 50 Million Tree program, which aims to plant 50 million trees across the province by 2025. The program was cancelled in April as a result of provincial funding cuts to Forests Ontario. The 50 Million Tree program has an annual budget of $4.7 million. Its success has seen more than 27 million trees planted in Ontario since 2008. Kemptville's Ferguson Forest Centre (FFC) is embracing the news, as the program cancellation would have resulted in a 40 per cent loss in income and six to eight local jobs. Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna made the announcement June 5, on World Environment Day. "Keeping forests healthy is one of the best ways to fight climate change and absorb carbon pollution," McKenna stated in a post on Twitter. "The goal of planting 50 million trees across Ontario is inspiring - and I'm so happy we can support Forests Ontario's vision." FFC chief executive officer Ed Patchell says the new funding will enable the 50 Million Tree program to resume for the next three years. Despite the welcome news, the FFC will continue to diversify its products and develop new ways to survive self-sustainably. Prior to the cuts, the better part of Forests Ontario's budget was funded by the province; last year's numbers show the government's contributions made up 85 per cent. The trees are planted on Crown land to increase private property forest coverage in southern Ontario. The federal government's $15 million investment is part of $420 million announced last fall, designated for environmental initiatives from Ontario organizations.

HEALTH CLASS WAS NOT ONE OF MARY'S FAVOURITE SCHOOL SUBJECTS DECIDING ON HER PREFERRED FOOD PROVED CHALLENGING, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Miss Crosby called it health class. I had no idea why she called it that, but once a month we had health class, which I didn't like one bit. She talked about things I thought were better left alone. Like the time she talked about cold sores, and there sat poor Cora with one on her top lip the size of a ripe strawberry. Cora squirmed in her seat through the entire lesson on what caused them and

how to treat them. Well, for the last class, Miss Crosby asked a question. What was our favourite food? Of course, we had to write it down in our scribbler, the one used only in health class. My favourite food was potatoes, but I couldn't spell potatoes, and I racked my brain for the entire five minutes Miss Crosby gave us to write it down. I thought of drawing a picture of a potato, but I knew she wouldn't go for that. All I could think of was the word "milk" because I saw it on our milk cans, and so I knew how to spell it.

But I hated milk with a passion. The ice box could never get it cold enough to suit me, and to me, it always smelled of cow, but I could spell "milk" easily, so that is what I printed in my health scribbler, even though it was my least favourite food. I spent the rest of the class terrified that Miss Crosby would ask me to read out my answer to her question. I breathed a sigh of relief when she passed over me, and of course, there was bad Marguirite dying to be asked, and waving her hand in the air like she wanted to go out to the back house. Miss Crosby ignored her. The lesson was lost on me, but my sister Audrey

said it was meant to teach us the importance of eating healthy foods. When Cecil was asked to read his answer, he said maple cookies from Briscoe's General Store. Needless to say the teacher was quick to tell Cecil one or two cookies was fine, but she certainly wouldn't recommend eating them instead of eating vegetables and meat. Sitting around the supper table that night, as usual, Mother asked all of us what we had learned in school that day. She wasn't happy that I had lied about what my favourite food was. There on the table, piled high in a bowl, was a mountain of creamy whipped potatoes, with a big dab of butter sitting right on top. I thought of

all the ways potatoes were served at mealtime, and how I loved every last dish. Mother made potato soup, and I have no idea what she put into it, other than finely chopped onions and cream, but I do know there wouldn't be a drop left to give to our dog, Sport, when the meal was over! Father of course, had to have fried potatoes for breakfast. And the wonderful smell of them being cooked while I was upstairs getting dressed for school made my mouth water. It was a special treat when Father himself decided it was time we had a good feed of German potato pancakes. I would watch him mash them fine, add onions, form them into patties, then dip them in whipped eggs, and drop them into sizzling bacon drippings in the big iron fry pan. I asked Audrey if she thought I should tell Miss Crosby the next day that I

really loved potatoes, and tell her the real reason I wrote "milk." My wise sister said just to forget about it. She was pretty sure the next health class would be dealing with head lice, a problem that seemed to occur at least once or twice a year at the Northcote School. This Father's Day marks ten years of fundraising through the Highway 43 Car Club's annual Father's Day Show & Shine for the Salvation Army food bank. The popular event will kick-off at 9 a.m. at 820 Heritage Drive on Sunday, June 16 and close at 3 p.m. Previously held in Riverside Park, the event will capitalize on the natural beauty of the Kemptville College grounds this year. "I've been trying for years to get this event over to that college," said Highway 43 Car Club's Rod Raf-

ter. He noted the event will be held on the front grounds where everyone can see the cars. "It's such a beautiful campus." Each show hosted by the car club benefits local food banks. Admission for the show & shine is paid through monetary or nonperishable food donations. The show will feature roughly 500 classic cars and more than 125 trucks, as part of the event's second annual Truck Fest. Rafter says one of the highlights of the show is the popular Burnout Contest, where drivers pull up onto a steel plate and have 23 seconds to spin their tires and make as much

smoke as they can. "If you haven't seen it, you've got to come out," he said. "People are just blown away by it." Attendees will find treats like ice cream and lemonade on the campus grounds and can enjoy lunch on the beer patio from Catered Affairs. There will also be a market with 30+ vendors, a 50/50 raffle and other draws for prizes. To mark the show's 10th anniversary, the first 200 attendees will receive a commemorative dash plaque for their car. Market vendors are still being accepted, and there is no charge for a spot. Those interested can contact cindy@highway43carclub.com or 613-258-1704 for more information.

TOP 5 TIPS FOR FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS chances of qualifying for the mortgage you need.

DAREN GIVOQUE Column

2. Don't be afraid to use mortgage default insurance

Buying a house is an important milestone but one that is becoming increasingly difficult in today's market. Here are 5 things you should be aware of before you take the leap into home ownership.

1. Understand GDS and TDS Your Gross Debt Service (GDS) ratio and your Total Debt Service (TDS) ratio are the two numbers that lenders will use to qualify you for a mortgage. Your GDS ratio is the percentage of your income needed to pay all your monthly housing costs, including principal, interest, taxes and heat. Fifty per cent of condo fees are also included if applicable. Typically, your GDS ratio needs to be bellow 39 per cent in order to secure a mortgage for a new home. You TDS ratio is the percentage of your income needed to cover all your debts. This includes car payments, credit cards, loans and alimony. Most lenders will consider you for a mortgage if your TDS ratio is 44 per cent or lower. Because GDS and TDS are so important for being able to secure a mortgage having a good idea of your financial situation before you go to a bank or private lender is ideal says Tina Murray (Mortgage Broker from Dominion Lending). Pay down debts and make sure your credit is in good shape to improve your

The down payment needed to buy a house in Ontario is 20 per cent. This means that if you are trying to buy a house that is $400,000 then you would need to save $80,000 for the down payment. A challenge for even the most fiscally responsible. If this is not feasible you have the option of putting down as little as 5 per cent of the cost of the house IF you insure the other 15 per cent. The Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Genworth Financial are two organizations who sell insurance products that will allow you to insure the portion of the down payment that you don't have ready to go. Generally, the premium will be around 3.5 per cent. Some people say it is better to wait until you can afford the entire down payment before you buy to eliminate the premium and interest payments that can add up over the years. That being said, if you wait to buy a house it is likely that you will be paying more in the long run anyway as housing prices tend to go up. As a generally rule it is better to become a home owner sooner to help grow your net worth and improve your financial security into the future.

3. Have a budget The last thing you want is to be house poor. This happens to people who buy a house that they can af-

ford on paper but haven't taken into consideration extra costs like property taxes, legal fees, moving costs and house insurance. Therefore, it is extremely important to have a budget that takes into account all the costs associated with buying and maintaining the home. It is also important to include other living expenses that don't factor in to your GDS or TDS in your budget like food and entertainment. The more accurate you can be with projecting your expenses in your new home the better. It is a good idea to have $5,000 to $10,000 set aside for extras so you don't end up with unforeseen costs that you can't pay.

4. Accept help Housing costs in Ontario are at an all time high with the average home costing around $600,000. Veteran real estate agent Geraldine Taylor says the issue is that housing costs have skyrocketed while the average income has increased at a much slower rate. This makes it particularly hard for young people to break into the housing market and many are turning to their parents to help. Taylor says that 80 per cent young homebuyers are depending on their parents to help them make their first purchase. Buying a house is an investment in your future so don't shy away from help if it is available to you.

5. Buy as much house as you can afford It is important to plan for the future when purchasing your first home.

As mentioned, you don't want to become house poor but ensuring that the house you buy will continue to fit your needs down the road will ensure that you don't have to go through the homebuying process again in just a few years. It's expensive to buy a or sell a house with paying a real estate agent, le-

gal fees and other moving costs. It makes a lot more sense to buy a home that you can grow into rather than one that you will need to turn on a dime and sell. Buying a house is a great investment and one that will contribute to your financial security as you age. It has been shown that people that get into the housing market

early typically retire more comfortably than those who wait until later in life. Make sure you surround yourself with the proper experts (real estate agent, financial advisor mortgage broker etc.) to make sure you are well equipped to journey into the world of home ownership. Boone, Stan

September 29, 1929 - June 2, 2019 To the well-organized mind, death is the next great adventure. Stan’s family paid tribute to this amazing husband, father, brother and grandfather on June 10th at Pinecrest Cemetery. “Stan the Man”, 89, was known to all as a perfectionist, sharp witted, and readily gave his advice or his opinion on any topic, “mostly construction”. Stan founded SC Boone Plumbing Services in Ottawa in the ‘60s and continued plumbing up until he built his last house in 2014. Stan passed peacefully Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Ottawa Heart Institute, after a lengthy battle with heart issues. Stan leaves behind his loving wife Enid (Callaghan) of 70 years. Daughters Judi (Tim), and Wendy, will miss Stan more than words can say. Stan had three amazing grandchildren, Jesse (Amanda), Cole (Sophie) and Emma. Fondly remembered by his good friend Gerry Wichers-Schreur. Will be sadly missed by brother Jim, and brother-in-law Danny Callaghan (Diann), and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of life will follow at a later date.

HAVES AND HAVE NOTS RUINING ENGLISH SOCCER JEFF MAGUIRE TAKES A LOOK AT HOW BIG MONEY IS RUINING THE SPORT OF SOCCER JEFF MAGUIRE Column

By any standard the just concluded football (soccer) season in Europe has been a triumphant one for teams from Great Britain. For the first time in history the finalists in the two major European cup finals were all from one country - England! On June 1 in Madrid, English giants Liverpool Football Club (FC) blanked Tottenham Hotspur from

north London 2-0 to win Europe's biggest prize, the UEFA (United European Football Associations) Champion's League trophy. The win was the sixth for Liverpool FC in the history of the competition which pits the top teams from leagues across the continent against each other. On May 29 Chelsea FC from west London cruised past north London rival Arsenal 4-1 to win the Europa League title. That tournament generally involves the "best of the rest." European clubs who finish below the top rungs in their respective leagues. This year's final was played in the unusual location of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan which, until 1991, was a member state of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. I'm a longtime Arsenal

supporter so the final score in the Europa League final didn't please me. But all things considered it was quite an amazing end to the campaign for English football! However, what is the status of professional football in general in the United Kingdom? Sadly at present it is very much a tale of the "haves and have nots." For too long in my opinion a handful of teams have dominated the game in England. They do so by spending massive amounts of money on players and cornering much of the available talent pool in the game. Not only players from Europe but from around the world. Home grown talent is rare in the English Premier League (EPL) which in many people's opinion is the best football league in

the world. The 20-team EPL is at the pinnacle of the English game which includes 92 teams in four leagues. A long standing relegation and promotion system sees clubs in the lower divisions vie for a place in the topflight. But without the major financial backing the top 10 (and especially three teams) currently have, the prospects for most clubs are poor. Manchester City FC was once among the strugglers in the EPL because they didn't have the money to compete with crosstown rivals Manchester United along with big spenders like Liverpool and Chelsea. That changed in the summer of 2008 when Man City was purchased by a billionaire from the United Arab Emirates. Following a massive cash injection the team has risen to the top of the EPL

standings winning four titles since 2012 including a domestic treble (the league and two English cup tournaments) in 2019. Big money is also behind the success of Chelsea who is owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Manchester United and Liverpool have wealthy American owners as does Arsenal. There's no comparison with how the major sports leagues in North America operate and European soccer, especially in England. In Britain big-money signings are reeled off one after another, but only by six or seven big teams. In my opinion the current British soccer model is doomed. The only way to regain control of such an out of control system is to introduce salary caps such as those most North Ameri-

can leagues and teams are forced to operate within. That along with a proper draft system which is the foundation of all successful sports leagues on our continent. The lowest teams have an opportunity to draft first and claim young players who can help them build a winner. It only makes good sense!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
