KEMPTVILLE LIVE ADDRESSES ACCESSIBILITY CONCERNS PATRON VOICES PARKING, WASHROOM CONCERNS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The Kemptville Live Music Festival, in its fourth year, brought nearly 21,000 people to the Kemptville Campus grounds from July 19 to July 22. It was the largest turnout for the annual event to date, and the festival organizing committee considers it to have been another great success. With growing numbers, festival organizer Karen Bedard says the committee is always adapting to the sheer volume, demographic, and individual needs of patrons each year. This year, Bedard recognized an increase in the number of guests with accessibility needs, as 202 patrons who bought tickets online indicated this at the time of their purchase. On the evening of July 21, one Kemptville Live attendee took to social media to report his less than ideal experience with acces-
sible accommodations at the festival. William Young and his wife, both in their mid-30s, travelled from Newington, Ont. to see The Beach Boys on the Saturday night when they found themselves dissatisfied with the level of attention paid to accessible parking, shuttle bus transportation, and washroom access on the festival grounds. Young accompanied his wife, who has used a wheelchair since enduring a head-on collision with a dump truck in her 20s. Young said they travelled in their own vehicle to the accessible parking lot at the front gates, and that entire rows of parking spaces had been designated for accessible parking. "However, they were filled with VIP ticket holders' cars instead," said Young. He posted a picture on his Twitter page of a BMW without an accessible parking permit, which had been parked underneath a sign marking the spots, "accessible parking See FESTIVAL, page 15

KEMPTVILLE LIVE DRAWS NEARLY 21,000 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The annual Kemptville Live Music Festival spanned over four days this year from July 19 to 22 and once again, brought many out-of-towners to Kemptville to see acts such as Downchild Blues Band, Jann Arden, Trooper, Loverboy, and The Beach Boys. The Kemptville Campus grounds were packed with music lovers and hardworking volunteers all weekend-long, and more than 800 campers set up on the campus grounds.Karen Bedard, one of the main or-
ganizers of the festival, reported that just under 21,000 attendees were counted over the course of the weekend, of which, many were recurring visitors; the total number of unique visitors over the weekend is 13,000. Friday, July 20 was the busiest night with more than 7,000 guests in attendance to see Trooper, Honeymoon Suite (who jumped in to fill an ill Kim Mitchell's spot) and Loverboy. Bedard said the festival's reach seems to be expanding each year, with ticket purchases from nine Canadian provinces and territories, nine American
states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and as far as Malta, a small group of islands in the central Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and the North African coast.Within Ontario alone, tickets were purchased across 223 communities, not including Kemptville. "This number is up from 174 communities in 2017," stated Bedard. Surveys have been sent out to online ticket purchasers for feedback on their experience during the festival weekend, and a complete wrap-up of attendee demographics and comments should be available by early September.

SENS ENDORSE APPLICATION FOR NHL-SCALE OUTDOOR RINK PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Local hockey players and ice skaters could have a brand-new community rink to enjoy this winter an 85-by-200-foot NHLscale rink, to be exact. Southgate Church, located at 1303 French Settlement Rd. in Kemptville, took down their well-used community rink this past spring as they plan to build a new one, and the Canada 150 rink on Parliament Hill is in need of a new home. Lead pastor at Southgate, Ben Last, says the church's application for the rink to come to Kemptville was endorsed by the Ottawa Senators themselves. "The municipality endorsed it as well, so it's a three-way bid that we put in," he said. North Grenville council already passed a resolution in support of a Sens See RINK’S, page 7
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Southgate Church in Kemptville is currently waiting to hear if they'll be awarded the NHL-scale Canada 150 rink that they applied for in the spring. Pastor Ben Last says their application for the rink was endorsed by the Ottawa Senators, and they should be notified by Aug. 11 whether they'll be the lucky community to get it. Foundation outdoor rink to be built at the church three years ago, after Last made a deputation at the Dec. 14, 2015 council meeting. Since then, the church has recruited a long list of 300-plus volunteers who've committed to maintaining the rink, and has raised approximately $120,000 for the project. The first phase of the rink will cost $300,000. If the church's application is successful in acquiring the rink, it will also come with a $150,000 grant toward installation costs. Last explained that the outdoor rink is one of Southgate's many efforts to give back to the community. "The reason why we wanted to do the outdoor rink is because we try to find niches to help the community, and right off the bat, Kemptville didn't have an outdoor rink, so we built one." The former rink at the church was wellused for eight years before it started to fall apart. "We decided we'd have to build a brand new one," said Last. "No matter what, it has to happen. Whether we're building it ourselves or we get the Canada 150 grant, something has to be there this fall, or else the town doesn't have a rink." The folks at Southgate expect to be notified by Aug. 11, as to whether the Canada 150 rink will be awarded to Kemptville or not, and they're up against eight other applications, but feeling confident. "We've done everything we possibly can to make it happen," said Last. "Our site plan is all approved through the municipality, the land is cleared, and everything is ready. Part of the application process is to guarantee that the rink is in by the end of this year, and not too many people can make that happen, but we've already done it." In preparation for the new rink, Last says there are already dentists on-board to make free mouth guards, and 60 helmets have been donated, so no costs are associated with the rink, and kids can just have fun. "What we want to do is to provide for the community," he said. "Everything we do is always free - we don't want money to be attached to anything we do, ever." Last says another goal is to see the installation of a roof on the new rink during Phase 2 of the project.
Please keep our community clean.

Other local municipalities that have applied for the rink to be installed in their community include Gananoque and Arnprior. In addition to the construction of the outdoor rink, Southgate has other big plans to expand; with an extended parking lot and a brand-new building, due to overwhelming numbers of regular attendants at the church. Last reported that nearly 500 guests attend Southgate in Kemptville every week, so they recently renovated an old church building in Winchester and opened it as their second location. Their

INCREASE FINES FOR BUTTHEADS One of our reporters had every reason last week to fume upon seeing a smouldering cigarette butt lying on the gravel shoulder of a local road, likely thrown out of a passing car's window. Prior to recent rains, the woods and fields throughout the Ottawa Valley were tinder dry. In fact, Mississippi Mills remains under a partial burn ban. Several fires broke out in Lanark County, including a 10-acre blaze on a farm outside of Perth, as well as the loss of livestock and a barn in a July 17 Toledo fire. So with the possibility of forest fires so high, it's plain stupid to flip cigarette butts into the grass or bush along our roadways. And illegal too. Fortunately more and more smokers realize that it's not acceptable to leave their butts lying around. Remember when gathering places in our communities had piles of butts littered outside after a major event. Gross. Especially for those tasked with cleaning them up. Now most smokers deposit their butts in receptacles provided for their convenience. But there are still those who think it's acceptable and safe to litter the landscape with their butts. They seem to think that one cloudburst will erase all worries about roadside fires. However, it's apparent that while Smiths Falls can get a dousing, an area a few kilometres down the road can be missed completely by the storm. Our careless smokers seem to believe that because of our deciduous forests Ontarians don't face the danger from fire they do in B.C. and Alberta. Wrong. Serious forest fires up the line from Petawawa and now in the Parry Sound area have affected traffic and air quality in those areas. It's just fortunate no homes have been lost, so far. Last summer's devastating fires in British Columbia and Alberta sparked those provinces to crack down on motorists who throw 'lit debris' out their windows. In B.C. fines under the wildlife and highway acts can range from $175 to $575 for offenders. Vancouver has boosted the fine to $500 for those drivers caught "tossing smoking material in a hazardous way." Willow Creek in Alberta has instituted fines from between $500 and $10,000 if your butt starts a bush or grass fire. And it's not just Canada. Washington State has boosted the fine to $1,025 during fire bans. The $500 fine in Western Australia rises up to a maximum of $25,000 and/or 12 months in jail if the offence happens during fire season. Ontario's police tend to levy littering fines ranging from $110 to $180 if they notice flagrant instances. As the danger from forest fires grows in Ontario, it's time the province follows the lead of many other jurisdictions in giving police the discretion of imposing much higher fines if butts are thrown out during a fire ban. The danger is real. That has to be impressed on the few who are still oblivious to how perilous and unsightly their habit is of improperly discarding cigarette butts.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY READER: CANCELLATION OF CAP AND TRADE PROGRAM NEEDS CLOSER LOOK DEAR EDITOR: I wonder why Premier Doug Ford was so anxious to cancel the cap and trade program as set up by the former provincial Liberals without closer examination nor a replacement, when it seems that the whole world is on fire. Wildfires are starting earlier in the season and burning for longer exacerbated by warmer weather. Perhaps someone should break the secret to the new premier that carbon emissions are a significant contributing factor, along with building of homes in fire-prone areas and years of fire mismanagement. These contributing factors can be dealt with using political will, education and common sense. In 2017 according to the U.S. Department of the Interior, there were 71,499 wildfires which destroyed
A new lexicon to the business of wildfires has been recently added; mega-fires. These are fires that burn more than 100,000 acres at a time. approximately 10 million acres of land and putting 4.5 million homes at risk; two million homes in California alone. Every year more than 330,000 people worldwide die from the after-effects of wildfires. With all this evidence and damage going on, President Trump has cut the budget of the Regional Climate Centers, which provide data used to control and prevent wildfires as if this will make the whole mess go away, like hiding under a blanket
will make the boogeyman disappear. A new lexicon to the business of wildfires has been recently added; mega-fires. These are fires that burn more than 100,000 acres at a time. Before 1995 these mega-blazes would occur on average of less than one per year; in the past decade the average has increased to more than 10 per year. The bad news is that these are expected to increase in the immediate future until we learn to deal more efficiently with climate change, greed, stupidity and improper home construction. Besides destruction, wildfires have killed 299 Americans fighting fires in the U.S. between 2000 and 2016. Maybe the severity of this will hit home only when we feel the devastating effects closer to home in Lanark County. And I can see this coming because stupidity, greed and turning a blind eye to evidence does not seem to respect borders.

IN WHICH FERG REALLY WISHES HE COULD SPEAK THE LOOK ON THE DOG'S FACE SAID IT ALL, DIANA FISHER WRITES. DIANA FISHER Column
It was my morning to have a lie-in. Well, at least I thought it was. When the Farmer got up to make coffee I tucked myself back in under the covers, thinking that the lovely cool breeze ruffling the curtains at the window felt more like August than July. I was just drifting back to sleep when ... SLURP. The Ferg had arrived to wish me good morning. He often sneaks upstairs while the Farmer is busy making me coffee. The two of them aren't very good at letting me snooze undisturbed. I could hear my husband crashing around in the kitchen, looking for his favourite coffee cup. Sigh. I gave Ferg a scratch under his chin and told him to lie down. He curled up like a big red letter C on the floor beside my bed and gave out a sleepy groan, closing his eyes. About 30 minutes later, the Farmer came up with my coffee. I guess he decided it was time I woke up. The aroma opened my eyes. I did a couple of stretches and sat up in bed, propping the pillows behind me and reaching for the coffee, and my book. "Good morning," I smiled. "What are you doing today?" "Ah, just puttering," he smiled. I knew that meant he was looking forward to spending the cool morning in the barn, with his new sawmill. I
peeked inside the other day - it was beginning to look and smell like a lumber yard in there. A huge pile of sawdust has covered the former manure-carpeted barn floor. He is cutting massive logs into boards for his new cottage build on the lake. He's in his happy place again, with a construction project on the go. I can only lie in bed for about half an hour, because my 50year-old body is in need of a good stretch. Ferg did his downward dog and his cat-cow stretches beside me. Then, before he could realize his escape, I closed the bedroom door and called him into the ensuite bath. I plugged the tub and started the water running while I changed into my requisite dog-bathing swimsuit. Ferg strolled in and stuck his nose in the tub as if he actually wanted a bath. I was surprised that he seemed so willing to follow me into the tub. Usually it's a battle and I find myself thanking him for staying sort of mediumsized and not growing to full golden retriever stature. I would never be able to wrestle one of those beasts into the bath. "Sit in the water, Ferg, so I can wash your tail." He was trying to hold his glorious plumed appendage up and out of the water. I lathered the oatmeal shampoo through his fur and washed remnants of the lake out of his coat. He put his chin on my lap as I sat on the edge of the tub and braced his body with my legs in the soapy water. Fifteen minutes later we were done and Ferg was rolling around in his towel, trying to get that clean smell out of his nose. I started my morning project - moving my office clothes into the spare room where I
dress before dawn in order not to disturb my bed mate. Suddenly Ferg walked into the room and sat down in the doorway. He gave me such a look, with those big rolling eyes of his, that I immediately knew something was up. "What is it, Fergus?" I asked him. He just looked around the room, worried. He looked anywhere but at me. When he did make eye contact, it was one of those side-eye glances. Then he yawned. This is what he does when he is nervous, or guilty. "What did you do?" I rushed out of the room, headed for the office where the baby's crib and toys are kept. I just assumed I would find another decapitated stuffed bunny or a shredded doll blanket. Two feet into the hallway, I stepped right into a puddle of pee. "Fergus! Bad! Out you go!" Fergus tucked his tail between his legs and rushed down the stairs and out the front door, which the Farmer was holding open. "What happened?" he asked. "Oh, Ferg had an accident. I should have put him out right after his bath. He was likely nervous. Now I have to go clean the carpet." It wasn't until I returned downstairs for another cup of coffee that the Farmer confessed. He had let the dog sneak upstairs without putting him out to pee. The pooch had been holding his bladder since the night before - through my liein, coffee and reading time, and bath. Now that's dedication. Diana Leeson Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. Her blog can be found at www.theaccidentalfarmwife.blogspot.com.

To help spread awareness about the dangers of leaving pets unattended in vehicles, and to assist pet owners, the Ontario SPCA is encouraging businesses across the province to take part in its annual No Hot Pets campaign by joining a list of pet-friendly businesses online. Businesses that pledge their support for the No
Hot Pets campaign will receive a digital sign to print and display in their window, letting pet owners know they can bring their animals inside while they shop or do business. "Wherever possible, we recommend that people leave their pets at home where they are safe and comfortable," says Jennifer Bluhm, deputy chief in-
spector, Ontario SPCA. "However, we know that's not always possible, particularly for those who are travelling with their pets. Our business directory helps them make informed decisions when planning their stops to help keep their animals safe from the heat." The issue of owners leaving their pets in vehi-
cles during the hot summer months is an ongoing problem across Ontario and puts animals' safety at risk. Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows open. Dogs have a limited ability to sweat, so even a short time in a hot
environment can be lifethreatening. Now in its sixth year, No Hot Pets is an Ontario SPCA campaign partnership with SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada. Through its No Hot Pets campaign, the Ontario SPCA is seeking the public's help to share this important message and report pets left unattended in
vehicles. For more information about the No Hot Pets campaign, and to add a businesses to the online directory, visit Nohotpets.ca. If you observe an animal suffering in the heat, call 310-SPCA (7722) or your local police. Submitted by the Ontario SPCA

HEALTH UNIT RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT BATS, RABIES RABIES CLINICS SCHEDULED SEPT. 12, 19 Bats are nocturnal animals and feed most actively two or three hours following sunset. Bats are efficient insect controllers eating about three times their body weight. Bats typically have their babies in June and come August many of the young bats are looking for their own roosting sites. Many bats will roost and hibernate in attics. Although bats are beneficial, they can carry diseases such as rabies and histoplasmosis, which can affect humans and animals. They may al-
so transmit distemper and mange to household pets. Approximately three per cent of bats carry the rabies virus. The most common signs of rabies in bats are the inability to fly and resting in unusual places such as the ground or floor. It is important to remember many of the bats that get into our homes are healthy bats and are looking for a way out. Bat encounters If you find a bat in your home and are absolutely sure that there was no human or animal contact, try to confine the bat to one room by closing the door of the room. Open a window or door to the outside and then turn out

Be sure to wear gloves and other protective clothing at all times when dealing with a bat. If you are bitten by a bat or if saliva from a bat gets into your eyes, nose, mouth or a wound, wash the affected area thoroughly and get medical attention immediately. Should you find a bat in your home and are unsure if it has bitten a family member, contact your health care provider and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District health unit to deter-
mine if treatment is required. Prior to calling, check for fresh bites and scratches that may be a result of contact with the bat. Bat proofing your home Bat proofing your house is necessary when the bats are entering the living space of your home. It is advisable to contact a pest management company or a wildlife conservation agency for assistance with bat proofing your home. Rabies can also affect pets; to protect your pet from rabies it is important to vaccinate them. Ra-
bies vaccination is mandatory in Ontario for domestic cats and dogs. The health unit, in partnership with local veterinarians and municipalities, will be holding the annual rabies clinics on Sept. 12 and 19. The cost is $20 per animal. said. "That's number one. We have always received unsolicited praise for our efforts to accommodate our accessible clients from the very first year." Bedard said at any given time, there is a dedicated accessibility team of at least six volunteers on-site to tend to any needs of patrons. "This includes delivering free water to keep them hydrated, running for food, providing light push service, as well as keeping the accessible area free of barriers and people standing in their line of sight of the stage."
Lack of accessible washrooms Another concern that Young reported on his Twitter page pertained to the number of accessible washrooms on site. "We discussed the bathroom (and parking) issues with other people in the accessible seating area, and they all voiced the same concerns and said the same things - with only one accessible bathroom, they were restricting drinking fluids and holding it until they got to a fast food restaurant, or home, after the concert," he told the Advance.
Within the designated accessible viewing area, Bedard confirmed that there was one accessible washroom and a shaded rest area under a tent. "At peak times, that area would hold approximately 30 patrons plus their attendants, who attend at no charge," she said. Beard indicated there were also three other accessible washrooms located in the main bank of portable toilets, and more located in the VIP tent, camping areas, and near the shuttle bus station. "(Young) has since emailed me some ideas; some of which, we will integrate for 2019 to make us even stronger," said Bedard. Despite having the opportunity to communicate directly with the festival committee, Young wanted to reiterate the impact of the issues he experienced with his wife at the festival, on behalf of everyone else who may have experienced similar difficulties over the weekend but did not report them. "These issues; parking, leaving, and bathroom use, were widespread and not limited to us," he said.

"What I can say is volunteers stated that it was a much greater number (of patrons) than expected, but the headliners were from a band that was popular 60 years ago - anyone from that period is in their 70s at least, so how did they not expect a large number of people with accessibility issues?!" Parking and washrooms aside, the conditions of the accessible viewing area was an aspect of the festival which impressed Young and his wife. "The conditions in this area were excellent. They had a tent set up at the opening with free water, storage for anyone in the accessibility area who needed to leave gear, and a large number of volunteers to assist." Young added that volunteers continually checked on everyone to make sure they had water and were comfortable. "The view of the stage was excellent, and they had people in the area between the accessible area and the stage remain seated for the concert so those in the accessible area could see the stage without obstruction. Giving credit to the organizers where it is due, this
was well thought-out and executed, minus the lack of bathrooms - which is a huge issue." For the most part, Bedard said the feedback from festival attendees has been positive. The month of August is typically when the committee reviews all feedback provided through a survey sent out to festival patrons. "We try to do our best, and obviously, there are always going to be suggestions on what we can do differently next year," she said. "We've had a dedicated team with an accessibility plan from the beginning, and we try to adapt every year to the volume and the needs of our patrons through educating our volunteers." Since his initial correspondence with the Advance, Young issued this statement: "I want to add that we did enjoy the performances and hope that Kemptville Live Music Festival continues to book bands of this quality. If they can fix their accessibility issues, we would happily return in the future. Our hope with publicizing this isn't to hurt the festival, but to have positive changes made for the future."

only (wheelchair)." It was discovered later that a volunteer had mistakenly parked some of the VIP guests' vehicles in the accessible parking area, as the parking lot was intended to be shared between patrons with VIP passes and patrons with accessibility needs. Bedard said there is always an opportunity for miscommunication, especially in dealing with such a large turnout, as well as a large number of volunteers. The nearly 300 festival volunteers were provided with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (OADA) training, as well as documentation on how to appropriately communicate with patrons with a variety of disabilities. With the parking lot full, Young unloaded his wife, her wheelchair, walker, service dog, and his lawn chair and back pack full of supplies before parking his vehicle at the Administration building oncampus and walking back to the festival gates. Upon entering the festival, Young said he and his wife spoke to volunteers about how to exit the festival at the end of the night. "My wife had planned on driving home herself so I could have a couple of drinks," said Young. "We asked the volunteers about returning to the vehicle, because if I had to drive it back to the entrance of the festival, I would not have any drinks at all. That would have been fine with me, however, (my wife) felt that it was an infringement on her independence - she wanted to be able to drive her husband home after I took her to the festival, and this would have meant she could not, and was now dependent on me for something she should have been able to do herself." According to Young, the front gate volunteers insisted at this point that there were multiple options to get them back to
their car, including a wheelchair-accessible shuttle bus that had been dropping people off, and so, they encouraged Young to have a few drinks and enjoy the festival. However, Bedard says this was a misunderstanding, as the festival did not hire any accessible transportation services, but did provide four-seater golf carts to shuttle guests to and from their parking areas within the campus grounds. "The accessible shuttle buses that the volunteers saw dropping off patrons were privately owned services, and had nothing to do with the festival," she explained. As a result, Young and his wife ended up waiting 45 minutes following the concert for an accessible shuttle bus that was not actually set to return. When a volunteer contacted Bedard and informed her of the situation, Bedard met Young and his wife at the gates and offered to take their keys and find their vehicle herself. She then drove it back to them at the front gates. "Our priority has always been the comfort and safety of our patrons," she

"Greetings Brian, I have a small problem that occasionally happens when I parallel park or leave a parking spot. Turning the steering sharply to the limit, sometimes cause the engine to stall. The engine RPM is
close to idle, vehicle speed is very low. This can happen in reverse or forward, left or right turn, summer or winter. Steering pump? New plugs? Fuel pump or filter? Or just the nature of an old beast ... The vehicle is a 2005 Blazer, Vortec 4.3L V6. Your opinion, as always, will be appreciated. S.V."

I went and checked with some GM experts first to see if this vehicle had a pressure switch on the power steering high pressure or feed line. These were used in some vehicles to bump up the idle during slow speed turns to prevent the load from the steering pump causing a stall out. This vehicle does not have that type of switch. I suspect from this Blazer's symptoms, this isn't a major problem. My best guess would be that there is not enough air getting into the intake when the throttle is closed at idle. There's a small bypass orifice on the throttle body to allow this. I'd check the throttle body for any deposit buildup and clean it or have it cleaned as required. "Good morning Brian, Quick question for you. In your opinion are tire sidewall dressings detrimental to the life of a tire? Are some better or worse than others? Thanks for your help, M.S." If the treatments were specifically designed, made, and labelled for tire use,

then they shouldn't cause any problems if applied as per instructions. But they're pretty much a cosmetic treatment. Three of the largest tire makers were asked by Consumer Reports on their views of tire dressing products. Bridgestone, Continental and Michelin were unanimous in their opinion that none of their products required such treatments. They all stated the rubber and other substances used in their tires contained protectants to guard against UV radiation and ozone. Michelin only recommends soap and water cleaning. Bridgestone mentioned that waxes embedded during the manufacturing process will migrate to the surface of their tires as they age and that this can produce a dull appearance. But when applying any tire treatment, make sure it's absolutely dry to the touch before driving off as some of these products can permanently stain or mar paint if the tire sprays any on the body. YOUNG MARY PARTICIPATED IN PRESERVING AND PICKLING TRADITION, COLUMNIST RECALLS MARY COOK Column
The kitchen wore the sweet smell of sugar, vinegar, mustard, and spices, all simmering gently on the second burner of the Findlay Oval. The red and white checked oilcloth on the table had been scrubbed clean, and white porcelain basins of freshly picked beans, onions, and green tomatoes were at the ready. My sister Audrey was at one end of the table, Mother at the other. In front of each was a chopping board and kitchen knives Father had sharpened to make the
job at hand as easy as possible. By the time the day was over, there would be many jars of chili sauce, beans in brine, and green tomato pickles, all ready to take down to the shelves in the cellar to augment our meals over the winter. Still to be 'done down' would be the preserves raspberries, strawberries and chokecherry jam, and anything else Mother could find to add to the swinging shelf under the house. I sat and watched, so very anxious to be part of this very important job ... putting away stores for the winter. Mother could sense that I wanted to help, and so she said I could have the job of washing the beans. They were already soaking in cold water, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they had to washed further. But Mother was high on cleanliness, and there wouldn't be one bean used until it had been thor-
oughly washed. She said that each one had to be rubbed separately, not simply swished around in the water. And so I began, taking one bean at a time out of the cold water, and pinching it through two fingers and putting it out on the spotlessly clean tea towel waiting for the chopping board. It was Audrey's job to cut off the ends of each bean, and then put as many as she could into the empty jars that had been boiling on the stove, standing them upright. Once each jar had been packed tightly, Mother poured cold salted water in it, and I knew that when winter came, those very beans would taste like they had just come out of the garden. My three brothers and Father never came near the kitchen when the job of preserving and pickling was going on. Mother had no time for idle chatter, and the brothers knew, if they hung around long enough,
they would get the hateful job of carting the bottles down to the cellar. It was that cellar which scared the daylights out of me. You could get into Aunt Bertha's cellar by simply opening a trap door off the kitchen, and going down a ladder. But the only way you could get into our cellar was to go outside and heave open the two huge flat doors slanted against the side of the house. The cellar was nothing more than a pit dug out of the ground. How I hated to go down those few steps into that space under the house! My hateful brother Emerson said he knew for a fact snakes lived in the cellar, and he also said spiders as
big as bullfrogs loved the damp darkness. Every year Father brought fresh sand from the gravel pit and replaced what was down there, and this is where carrots and parsnips were buried, and most amazing to me, they never froze over the long winters. When Mother and Audrey finished, and all the jars were sealed tightly, Mother kept a bowl of chili sauce out for our supper that night. Father loved chili sauce but he didn't eat it like the rest of the family. He poured his into a fruit nappy and dipped thick slices of buttered fresh bread into it, and ate it that way. He never failed to say, 'By gar, that's good, let me
tell ya', and the bowl would be empty by the time supper was over. I would look over at all the sealers ready to be taken down to the cellar, and I would know, and be thankful, that that day's work would help us get through another winter. SUPPORT LAWS AT ITS NEXT GARAGE SALE AUG. 11 Saturday Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., marks our next garage sale! Just a short wait until lots of treasures and a barbecue lunch will be waiting for you. The sale takes place at the shelter, 253 Glenview Rd., Smiths Falls.
Parking Lot Party Aug. 17 Please mark your calendars for another fun, very popular, event in Perth at Top Shelf Distillers (14 Warren Cres.) - a Parking Lot Party. There will be good food, fancy drinks and great music. As you dance the night away, hopefully
under starry skies, staff of Top Shelf Distillers will be collecting money as well as supplies for LAWS. At this time canned cat and kitten food (Friskies preferred) as well as bottles of bleach is most needed. The party is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 17 and begins at 7 p.m. Graven and Silver Creek will perform.
This week's featured pets Willy Please meet friendly Willy! Willy was a stray boy and has not been long at LAWS. He's extremely affectionate, very laid-back
and just loves his belly rubs. He's very trusting of humans. He also loves to have his fur brushed. It's thick and will shine after a good brushing. He must have been somebody's boy as he's overly friendly and gets along well with his roommates. Willy is about four years old and he is available for adoption at LAWS. Cookie I am Cookie and I am a perfect little princess looking for a new castle to live in! If you are looking to shower a new kitty with love and affection, then I'm your
girl. I'll return the affection 10-fold. I'm an expert at playing with toys and would love to do this in my new home. Could you be my Prince Charming? I am available for adoption at the Pet Valu in Carleton Place. Boots Hi, I am Boots and just two years old. I am a bit of everything you'd expect from a kitty. I enjoy a bit of quiet time, but I am no couch potato. I enjoy my cat naps and I like affection, but I am content to entertain myself until you're ready for me to warm your lap. I guess I am just a little
bit of all good things wrapped up in a gorgeous fur-coat that needs regular grooming to keep me looking pretty. Kensey Meet Kensey, who was found in the Almonte area. She lives for head rubs. They're all she talks about. All day, every day. Try taking her picture ... head buds ... thank you for the attention, head bud. Give her a treat, more head buds. When people come to visit, head rubs. If it's not head rubs or buds, it's toys ... or cuddles! She loves cuddling preferred while
all fours on the ground. What a treat she is, and she's pretty too! Thank you for your continued support. With such flows that are occurring in the Kemptville Creek sub-watershed, habitat for fish and other aquatic creatures is diminished and populations are likely to be affected. Water conservation should be practiced by everyone within the Rideau River watershed. Use of rain barrels to capture water for lawns and gardens, avoiding using pressure washers to clean houses, driveways, decks and fences are actions that contribute to the conservation of our water resources. Municipalities may have invoked water restrictions so check your municipal website for applicable bylaws. Submitted by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority

July 21-28. Forecast amounts were exceeded throughout the Rideau watershed. The result was streamflows above the historical averages for the time of year in most cases. However, flows are declining again and can be expected to descend below average once more with limited rain forecast and days with 30 degree temperatures causing evaporation. Kemptville Creek has responded little to the rainfall. Smaller tributary streams are again going dry after brief increases. The creek itself has flows about six per cent of normal measured downstream of Oxford Mills compared to, for example, the Jock River at twice normal for the time of year.

This statement is to advise that the low water status in the Rideau River watershed has been reduced to Minor Severity by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. Longer range forecasts indicate warmer and dryer than normal through the rest of the summer and into the fall. If that forecast comes to pass, flows and levels can be expected to fall well below normal. Present conditions are generally close to normal but because of declining flows and forecasts, the low water status is being reduced from Moderate to Minor Severity rather than being withdrawn entirely. Record rainfall was measured at several climate monitoring stations in eastern Ontario through

Bennett, who live across the street from Ellison in Carleton Place, also are hosts. Both family's host students have hung out together. "They're all friends," said Terry. "All the kids have been so nice." The festivities included historical re-enactments from 1700-1800's militia, live music, a vendor and artisan market, a barbecue from the Merrickville Lions Club, children's entertainment and much more. They say it’s a beautiful journey, From this world to the new. Some day I’ll make that journey, Which will lead me straight to you. And when I reach that garden, In which there is no pain. I’ll put my arms around you, And we’ll never part again. So loved & missed, Betty He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast, He just kept right on working, For those he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants were very few, And if he had some worries, They went unspoken too. He was there, a firm foundation, Through all our storms of life, A sturdy hand to hold unto, In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to, When times were good or bad, One of our greatest blessings, The man that we called DAD. In our hearts forever, Susan, Pat, Peter, Chris & families.

SUDOKU
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 It can be challenging to silence your suspicious mind, Aries. Not everyone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Avoid gossip whenever possible, and you’ll be fine.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 This is a prime time to nurture business relationships that could push your employment career into a new direction, Libra. There are many possibilities at your disposal.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Wear your heart on your sleeve, Taurus. Doing so may endear you to others. It may seem like you’re putting all your cards on the table, but you’re showing you’re genuine.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 It can be difficult for your detailed-oriented self to draw the line at what to include in a task and what to leave out. You strive for perfection in all you do, Scorpio.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Toning things down is not necessarily your style, Gemini. But this week you may want to keep a few details to yourself. Maintain a low profile for the next few days.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You are wondering if you should play it safe or dance closer to the edge this week, Sagittarius. It may be because you are feeling trapped by routine. Change can be good.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, it is very easy to get wrapped up in the problems of others. But sometimes you have to let others work things out on their own. Offer advice if it is sought.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you want to be there for all the people who may need your assistance. But avoid stretching yourself too thin so you can approach each situation energetically.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, behind the big lion’s roar beats the heart of a pussy cat. Your sensitive side is bound to come through this week, when you may provide comfort to a person in need.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Choose your battles, Aquarius. There are not enough hours in the day to be an activist for every cause. Only select the ones that you truly feel strongly about.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 What you show to the public may not be the true Virgo you keep close to yourself. Let a few intimate details sneak out, and you may be surprised at the reactions.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Try not to record every moment on social media, Pisces. It’s good to leave an aura of mystery from time to time and enjoy the moments.
