NORTH GRENVILLE RESIDENTS RAISE CONCERNS OVER OUTDOOR RINK LOCATION PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com There has been much excitement in North Grenville over the potential Canada 150 outdoor rink coming to town. Southgate Church at 1303 French Settlement Road has applied for the rink to be installed on their property, and a number of local businesses have supported the initiative by collecting petition signatures and raising money through community fundraising events. Despite an overwhelming amount of support, many residents have expressed their disapproval of the rink location-to-be. The matter was initially brought to council in 2015 when Southgate proposed the project idea in the form of a Sens Foundation rink. To date, the project has evolved as the Foundation has gone through some changes and a new opportunity for the church to apply for the Canada 150 rink
and grant has presented itself. The church is expecting to find out any day now whether they will be the lucky recipient of the rink, which will be granted to a community within 200km of Ottawa to be installed in time for this winter. Lead Pastor Ben Last at the church has made it clear that with or without the Canada 150 grant, the rink will be built, funded by the community, and maintained by volunteers of the church. "Whether we're building it ourselves or we get the Canada 150 grant, something has to be there this fall, or else the town doesn't have a rink," he said. But one North Grenville resident disagrees. "I think we have enough rinks," said Fiona McKenney, "and we do have a great outdoor rink in Bishops Mills that was put up by the municipality and is looked after by See NAME, page 4

Fans of gripping psychological thrillers are in luck as the Classic Theatre Festival opens its annual mystery thriller, Angel Street (also known as Gaslight) starting Aug. 17 in Perth. This story of an unsolved murder and the lethal mind games employed to protect the main suspect is considered one of the best plays of the genre, a cat-and-mouse struggle for survival that leaves audiences on the edge of their seats until the final curtain. Angel Street takes audiences back to Victorian-era London, and nights of thick fog and shadowy figures lurking in the distance. Its author, Patrick Hamilton, also penned another mystery megahit, Rope, which became an Alfred Hitchcock film, as well as a series of novels that in recent years have been rediscovered and acclaimed for their insights into the underbelly of London and the lives of those living on the margins.
When Angel Street opened on Broadway, it catapulted its young male lead, Vincent Price, into superstardom, while also providing a plum role to Canadianraised actor Judith Evelyn. When a British film version was made in 1940, all the negatives and prints were bought up and destroyed by MGM, which preferred to keep the story for its own star, Ingrid Bergman. Anyone familiar with the popular social media term "gaslighting" - whereby manipulators intentionally set up misdeeds or falsehoods and then question the sanity of victims who challenge what is going on - will recognize why the term was inspired by this play. Written at a time when modern psychology was becoming a critical reference point in popular culture, the idea of gaslighting rapidly became a signifier of abusive relationships on both personal and political levels.
Starring in this all-time classic is Jeffrey Aarles (returning this year after his lauded role as a conflicted minister in Shaw's Candida) and Jessica Sherman, who spent over a dozen years training and working on the U.K. stage. Also appearing are a trio of performers seen on stages across Canada as well as on TV and film: Sheldon Davis, Darla Biccum and Lauren Horejda (who played the haunted target of gaslighting in last year's I'll Be Back Before Midnight). Those interested in street-level theatre can continue to enjoy the annual walking plays, with this year's stories set during the Second World War. The Prisoner of Petawawa runs Wednesday to Sunday at 11 a.m. while the musical tribute to war brides, Far From Home, plays Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. With 16 shows per week, the Classic Theatre Festival, running until Sept. 9, offers

NAME OF RINK CONTINGENT ON FINAL SPONSORSHIP Continued from page 1
volunteers." McKenney added that she believes more effort should be put into the installation of a large indoor public pool. Some concerns raised by other residents pertain to the location of the future rink on the church's property, in terms of accessibility and inclusivity. Holly Brown, founder of Rainbow Union, Dundas and Grenville, is very concerned about the accessibility of the rink for the local LGBTQ2+ community. "As a parent and advocate, I am very concerned and frustrated by the municipality's decision to have the rink built next to the Church," she said in a statement issued to the Advance. "All public recreation facilities must be accessible to all community members, and all families deserve the opportunity to enjoy skating without fear of prejudice. Wesleyan Christianity believes in the
eternal damnation of the LGBTQ2+ community - the location for the rink next to the church is therefore not a safe or accessible space." Sami Kutowy, a local mother of three, believes the rink should be installed at Riverside Park in Kemptville. "Why wouldn't the church want to install the rink somewhere that would serve the needs of the whole community?" she asked. "If the rink was in town, it would be a fantastic opportunity for the high school students to gain the volunteer hours they need to graduate. Students from both high schools in town could walk there at the end of the day." Kutowy added that she wonders if the school boards were consulted, and she feels that it is a missed opportunity, as six local schools are within walking distance of Riverside Park. In 2017, local organization the Ontario Parenting Connection (OPC) submitted a request during the
2018 budget consultation that asked for a rink to be installed at Riverside Park, but the proposal was rejected at the time. Within the agenda package for the Aug. 7 committee of the whole meeting, staff report included the following excerpt: "For the Municipality to take on the responsibility to construct and operate an outdoor rink at Riverside Park, an investment would be required for a number of items including getting water to the facility, lighting and a concrete slab, as well as staff to maintain the facility and program the activities." Although there is land at Riverside Park for an outdoor rink, the report states that the revitalization plan for the park that was completed in 2013 did not suggest an outdoor rink, and the maintenance of a large amount of passive recreation space within the park was identified as a priority. The report goes on to ad-
dress transportation and accessibility concerns related to the rink. "There are a number of residents along French Settlement Road and Kettle Creek who can access the location without the use of a vehicle. Many of the new residential developments in North Grenville are outside of the village of Kemptville; therefore, driving will likely be the preferred mode of transportation, regardless of where an outdoor rink is to be located." The report is concluded stating that it is staff's belief that Southgate Church's proposal would offer the best location and long-term success for an Ottawa Senators Foundation outdoor rink, and that Southgate has made a commitment to call their outdoor rink "North Grenville's Community Outdoor Rink." However, the Advance has since reached out to North Grenville Community Rink Chair, Randy
Hopkins to confirm this, who says the name is contingent on the final sponsorship of the rink. "It depends on a variety of things, but that certainly will unfold in the very near future, I hope. We're supposed to hear this week," he said on Aug. 10. "Like the other groups that have applied, we're just sitting and waiting." Another North Grenville resident, Kristin Strackerjan, was among those who attended the Aug. 7 committee of the whole meeting and Aug. 13 council meeting. She posed questions to council about the role that the municipality will play in its partnership with the church, as council passed a resolution on Aug. 13 to assume responsibility for all expenses and donations related to the rink project, as well as the issuing of charitable receipts on behalf of the church. "The rink will be run by the Church, and it is likely that all events (95 per cent, according to Mark Guy), will be planned by the Church," she said. "In order to best represent the
needs and desires of the residents of North Grenville, and to call this a true community rink, the Municipality and the Church should work together to create events and activities that are fit for all." Councillor Jim Bertram was also at the Aug. 13 meeting and asked if there would be any financial cost to the municipality in its new partnership with the church. "There will certainly be some staff time related to these duties," replied Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Mark Guy, "but it's unclear at this time how many hours a week. It's really hard to say at this point, but certainly that would be the only indirect cost." Following additional comments from the public, Guy also confirmed that the church holds the liability insurance for the rink, and will be responsible for any cost overruns. "The municipality is supporting it; we believe it's a good project. However, we don't have any title on the rink itself or the land that it sits on."

A new partnership between the municipality and Southgate Church is on the horizon. North Grenville council passed a resolution at the Aug. 7 committee of the whole meeting that calls for the municipality to assume responsibility for all donations and expenses, as well as the issuing of chari-
table receipts, related to the Canada 150 rink that may be coming to the property of Southgate Church in Kemptville. The resolution will be officially passed or defeated at the Aug. 13 council meeting. The church first requested council's support in building an Ottawa Senators Foundation outdoor rink - a different project in December of 2015, and the resolution was passed.

Since then, executive changes within the Sens Foundation has put the outdoor rink project on hold. However, a new opportunity has come along, as the Canada 150 rink currently located on Parliament Hill will be permanently relocated to a lucky community within 200 kilometres of Ottawa. Arnprior and Gananoque are among the communities to have applied for the rink, as well as Southgate Church, to have it brought to Kemptville. The selected community will also receive a grant for approximately $150,000 toward the installation preparations and materials. The church submitted their application on July 12, which was endorsed by both the municipality and the Ottawa Senators.
The church's request for the municipality's involvement, with monetary donations and expenses related to the rink, is due to an issue with the project timeline. "The church's reluctance to take on this task is the wait time to get approval through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to have the ability to provide charitable receipts," said director of parks, recreation and culture, Mark Guy, at the Aug. 7 meeting. "One of the stipulations with the grant application is for the rink to be up and running by the end of 2018, weather permitting - they don't want to hold back progress if they are waiting on the Canada Revenue Agency, and that was the reason for their request from the municipality." The church has applied for the Canada 150 rink on Parliament Hill, which is in need of a new home and will be relocated to a lucky community within 200km of Ottawa. Lead Pastor Ben Last says the rink will be built either way, and called the North Grenville Community Rink, as an outdoor rink is greatly needed in North Grenville. ment from the Ottawa Senators was put in place in 2015?" he asked. Guy replied, stating that he believes the donation was made through the municipality's annual community grants pro-
gram, to get a startup fund in place for a future rink. He reiterated that the church is committed to building the new rink with or without assistance from the Ottawa Senators Foundation.
Tobin clarified that the maximum amount for a community grant is $1,000. The discussion was concluded with Guy vowing to look into the matter and get back to the resident with a response.

charitable receipts to those making donations toward the rink, the municipality will also be responsible for accepting the funds and making payments for works completed on the project on behalf of the church. Bylaw 99-16 allows the municipality to take on this responsibility, as it states that the municipality may accept donations and issue official income tax receipts as prescribed by the CRA, accounting for donations for specific purposes. To date, donations received for the NHL-scale rink add up to roughly $120,000 raised by the community and donated through corporate sponsorships. The first phase of the project is estimated to cost roughly $300,000. Guy says the lucky recipient of the rink will be announced later this summer or early fall, but lead pastor at Southgate, Ben Last, says he anticipates being notified by Aug. 11 if the rink will be coming to the church property at 1303 French Settlement Rd. With or without the Canada 150 grant, Last says the rink will be built, as it is greatly needed in North Grenville. Before a unanimous vote passed the resolution, a young resident asked council about a $3,000 donation that Southgate Church received from the municipality in 2015. "Why was there a donation made of $3,000 to the church before a commit-

MEDIA OVER COVERAGE OF TRAGEDIES TROUBLING
ABOUT US
This newspaper, published every Thursday, is a division of the Metroland Media Group Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Torstar Corporation. The Metroland family of newspapers is comprised of more than 80 community publications across Ontario.
IN THE RUSH TO BE FIRST, ACCURACY SOMETIMES TAKES A BEATING, JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE Column
As a junior reporter, fresh out of journalism school, I’m sure I would never have considered writing a column like this. But after 47 years in the business and a lifetime following the news (my late father founded the Stittsville community newspaper) I have a very different view of how the media should govern itself. I’m concerned about what I feel is a lack of balance demonstrated by some in the media, especially when it comes to covering the many tragedies which are all too common in the 21st century. The incredible reach and total saturation which spins from the worldwide web means news today — especially bad news — travels fast. In journalism school, we were taught to do a fair, objective, balanced and truthful job (“accurate” is a related word) of covering the news. Unfortunately, in our modern society much of the instant news available via social media and the Internet in general are posted by individuals with no news background. There is little if any thought given to how accurate their postings are or about the potential damage they can cause if the material in question is inaccurate or false. Ask witnesses to any news event what they saw and you are bound to get multiple, often very different, viewpoints. Therefore, the initial information reported is usually quite different from the news released by the authorities who investigate such occurrences. That is the weakness inherent to instant news!
As for the mainstream media today, I’m troubled by what I feel is the overkill related to major news stories. When a shooting, explosion, plane crash or other major, negative occurrence comes to light the allnews stations and online news sources turn their coverage completely to that particular incident. Sadly, in the rush to be first, accuracy and truth sometimes take a beating. Two recent tragedies in Toronto are examples of this troubling trend. The van attack in April and the mass shooting in the city’s Greektown neighbourhood last month. In Toronto, some news outlets set everything else aside and focused exclusively on the tragedies I have just mentioned. The “saturation coverage” continued for much of the following next week. In fairness, the same kind of news approach is all too common in the wake of virtually every major event that happens today. There doesn’t seem to be a “happy medium” anymore when it comes to the news. In fact, I think the boundaries of good taste and common sense are being severely tested when it comes to media coverage in general today. I would like to see some balance applied when it comes to news gathering in general, but especially relative to publicizing the senseless murders of our fellow human beings. At this point in time I believe things are askew in this regard! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY READER APPLAUDS COLUMNIST'S STANCE ON INFORMED VOTING DEAR EDITOR: Paulina Hrebacka's recent editorial on the importance of voting ("Uninformed vote more dangerous than no vote at all," Aug. 2) was an impressive piece of writing. I am in full agreement with Ms. Hrebacka that we need to do more than launch the usual campaign to encourage people to exercise their democratic rights and obligations. In addition to pointing out that it is important to vote (and there is no doubt it is important), I believe that we need to let younger people know why it is so important that they do so. And, as Ms. Hrebacka points out, we should emphasize that voters need to educate themselves before casting a ballot. I can't think of a better way to get young people engaged in public affairs. To add to Ms. Hrebacka's arguments, I want to point out something par-
ticularly relevant to the upcoming municipal elections. Most of us live in communities that are small enough to allow us to get in touch with the candidates if we have any questions, or to find out where they stand on a particular issue. If they want your vote, chances are they will make the time to speak with you, or to send you an email. Thank you, Ms. Hrebacka, for reminding us that we are privileged to live in a free society, and that this means taking seriously the responsibility to exercise our democratic rights in an informed way.

IS LONG-LOST RACING YACHT IN CARLETON PLACE? DEAR EDITOR: I am a boating writer
working on a story about a famous Canadian boat. A while ago I heard the racing yacht, “Canada,” was found near Carleton Place. This boat is as important to Canadian sports history as was Rocket Richard to hockey. The trophy Canada’s Cup was named after it (not our country). It was a formidable racing machine on the Great Lakes in match racing competitions (two boat racing against each other) before and after the turn of the 20th century. If any of your readers know anything about “Canada” or its whereabouts, I would be grateful if they could contact me directly with any information. My email address is: bruce@brucekempphotography.net and my telephone number is 613-285-7311.

The Upper Canada District School Board is proud to share that Canada's Premiers have honoured TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education with a Council of the Federation Literacy Award. This award recognizes outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy. The awards are presented annually, in each province and territory, to recognize the excellence of educators, volunteers, learners, community organizations and businesses in many areas including family, Indigenous, health, workplace and community literacy. "I'm really proud of the staff at all of our campuses. They do outstanding work with our students, not just teaching but forming relationships with them to understand their needs," said TR Leger principal Sandy McInnes. "Our champions are our program instructors. They create a culture of comfort and care for our students. They really get to know the learners coming in and align opportunities and resources with the interests of the students." UCDSB board chair Jeff McMillan added, "I am very proud of the work our staff does for students attending the TR Leger program. Through their dedication and commitment, so many of our students are given the opportunity to believe in themselves as learners." TR Leger has delivered the Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program, also known as the Skills, Training and Employment Preparation program, for more than 20 years. COTTAGING BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF GROWING UP IN THE '70S, WRITES DIANA LEESON FISHER
Dad and Mom took my sister and me to the Maritimes in 1976. It is a long trip by car, so we planned to leave at 4 a.m. to make the most of the day on the road. I remember waking as soon as I felt Dad’s footfall in my room, but I clenched my eyes shut and let him collect me in my blankets for the ride. Already tucked in the pockets of the station wagon were crayons, colouring and puzzle books, and a bag of candy for each of us that we had selected from the bins at the B & H grocer the day before. I had also made sure that six of the newest Nancy Drew mysteries were packed in my Barbie suitcase for the holiday. The sun was just comContinued on page 15

er’s charcuterie, if you will. That held us off while she got dinner on the barbecue. We had to have our meal eaten and dishes done by 6 p.m., when the camp ball game began. My sister and I were not exactly athletic (well, maybe she was, but I certainly wasn’t). It was all a big social activity. After ball, we headed back to the beach to cool off. With the sun going down, the water was smooth as glass. Dad would drive the boat over from the lagoon and back it up to the beach, just outside the swimming ropes. One after another, he taught our friends to waterski. It wasn’t until years later that I realized what a generous act that was — an expense of time and gas money. He was always a teacher, even on summer holidays. Now my husband and I rent a cottage for a week each summer, just so I can get back to a lake. As the sun sets, I settle in on the screened porch with my book, my beer and my camper’s charcuterie. I close my eyes and listen. A loon is calling. And somewhere, a kid is sitting in the water, balancing huge skis on his feet. A motor revs. “Hit it!”

ing up over the treetops of George Street as we snuggled into our car bed and drove away. Dad had planned to arrive at Silver Lake truck stop just as they opened, a little before 6 a.m. “Best breakfast you’ll ever eat,” he proclaimed. And so it was, but mostly because it was in a restaurant instead of our own kitchen, and we didn’t have to do dishes. From that trip, I remember: • Collecting shells between the rocks at Peggy’s Cove • Eating lobster for the first time in Shediac, N.B. • The beach where my sister stepped on a dead jellyfish and got stung anyway. Dad said she should pee on it to relieve the sting. • A long-haired woman in a leotard doing yoga at the campsite next to ours. She ate yogurt and drove a VW Beetle. Mom said she was braless. At one point on our journey, we rounded a curve and the camper-trailer came right off the back of our station wagon and careered into the ditch. I noticed right away but didn’t say anything at first because I knew it would upset my father. I learned some new swear words on that trip, but not from music. Dad outlawed the radio because they
kept playing "dirty songs" like Cheap Trick’s I Want You to Want Me. Instead, we listened to the Funny Funkies and Goofy Greats on eight-track tapes. We heard them so many times, we learned the lyrics to every single song. “Ahab the Arab, sheik of the burning sand" … "Wella, wella, wella, bird, bird, bird, bird is the word!" ... "Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes and a bone in her nose, ho, ho!” After that first trip, camping became a big part of every summer for my family. We would rent a campsite at Bon Echo Provincial Park for the first two weeks of July every year. Every year we reunited with other families who did the same; kids from the Toronto area — mostly boys. Standing on the edge of puberty, barely filling out our bikinis, this was a big deal for my sister and me. We spent our days staked out on the beach, my "ghetto blaster" playing The Police’s Synchronicity, or we swam across the lake to the cliff, where we climbed up onto a ledge, ate blueberries and dove into the deep, black water to keep cool. Mom knew we would be out all day, so she never bothered with lunch, but as soon as we returned, ravenous, to the campsite, we snacked on Ritz crackers topped with thin coins of Polish sausage, cheddar cheese and dill pickles. A camp-

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland The Oxford Mills Community Association has requested that the park in Oxford Mills, officially named Oxford Mills Park, be changed to the name that it has been commonly referred to for years; Maplewood Park. The park got its unofficial name from its location on Maplewood Avenue and next to Maplewood Hall.
COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION REQUESTS NAME CHANGE FOR PARK PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The hamlet of Oxford Mills, home of the Brigadoon Restaurant, Maplewood Hall and Oxford-on-Rideau Public School, hosts several community events in its popular park, known as Maplewood Park, regularly – but that isn’t the park’s official name – not yet, anyways. The Oxford Mills Community Association (OMCA) has requested that the municipality of North Grenville officially change the name of Oxford Mills Park, to Maplewood Park, as it is most commonly called today. The matter
was discussed at the Aug. 7 committee of the whole meeting. After council received the request from the OMCA on July 9, the matter was deferred to staff so that a report could be prepared by director of corporate services/ clerk, Cahl Pominville. The park is part of the property including Maplewood Hall, the public works garages, and the former Oxford-on-Rideau Township office. “Both Phil Gerrard, Heather Render and myself worked in the former Oxford-on-Rideau Township office at some point during our careers,” Pominville said at the Aug. 7 meeting. “We all re-
membered it as ‘the park beside the township office.’ It never really had a name.” The current Maplewood Hall was formerly the S.S. #8 Oxford Mills School; an elementary school that closed in 1964. It was then bought by the township and became a school for the mentally challenged called Maplewood School in 1968; a role that it continued to play until 1983 when it closed. The school was operated under the former Community Living North Grenville. In June of 1987, Oxford-on-Rideau council passed a bylaw which changed the name of a portion of County Road 18 from the
corner by Maplewood Hall around to Guy Road, called Maplewood Avenue. “So, with Maplewood Avenue and the Maplewood School being there, people sort of just came to know it as Maplewood Park,” said Pominville. “Given its history and the name that has been unofficially used for years, it is the recommendation of staff that council change the name of Oxford Mills Park to officially be named Maplewood Park,” The resolution was passed at the August 13 North Grenville council meeting, officially putting the name change into effect.

MOTHER FOUGHT LOSING BATTLE WITH COMMON HOUSEFLIES MARY COOK Column
ENTIRE FAMILY WORKED EACH SUMMER TO KEEP THEM OUT, MARY COOK RECALLS Mother had more than one way to fight the common housefly, which she hated with a passion. She was convinced before com-

ing into the house, they had collected enough germs from the barns to send us all to our sick beds. So when they managed to get into the kitchen, they were shortlived, let me tell you! Her favourite procedure to kill them off was the spray can of FlyTox which she got from Scott’s Hardware in Renfrew. When she used this powerful spray method, the kitchen was closed up for the better part of the day, as Mother attached the invaders with such force, that for hours after, you could smell the strong Fly-Tox all the way to the ice house, and the fumes hung from the ceiling like gossamer clouds. Father said it was more deadly than the housefly, even those that came first from the barns. She absolutely refused to use those hanging sticky coils that attached to the ceiling, since, after letting Father talk her into them, a fly fell off and landed in the butter dish, which, of course, had to be thrown out — butter and all! She even had Father make homemade swatters for we five kids. Square pieces of fine wire
mesh were tacked to a thin strip of lath, and we each had our own, with orders to keep it close at hand, so that we could swat any fly that came within a foot of us. Of course, we were never allowed to kill a fly that was anywhere near the kitchen table! We had to shoo it away, and, hopefully, it would land on the back of a chair or a windowsill where its splattered body was well away from where we would be eating. Then we had to take wet rag and scour the spot afterwards. On hot days, it wasn’t unusual for us to have our noon meal out in the grape arbour, where a long table, covered with oilcloth was always at the ready. Of course, it was thoroughly scoured before we took our food out, and then two of us kids were given the job of standing each at an end of the table with a flour bag tea towel. We had to keep it swishing over the table to scare off any fly that was trying to join us at dinner. So the two swishers, given this job, couldn’t eat until everyone else was finished. Father would just shake his head.
Going in and out of the house was another challenge for each of us. We had to first stand at the screen door, and even if there wasn’t a fly in sight, we had to rattle the door a few times before opening it, and swish our arms over our heads and around our bodies and scare off any fly waiting to get inside. Mother’s ongoing battle with the common housefly was never quite won. Father said her time and energy would be better spent fighting a war she could win. He said, as long as he lived on the farm (born there, he would remind her), nobody ever won the war over the summer invasion of the flies. That didn’t stop Mother from trying. Little did she know that my sister Audrey and I would grow up and take with us, too, our hatred of the dreaded housefly. Never forgetting Mother’s constant battle that went on in our kitchen out there in Renfrew County every summer so many years ago. Lots of upcoming events, so be sure to mark your calendars and come out to support the Lanark Animal Welfare Society. On Friday, Aug. 17 starting at 7 p.m. in Perth at Top Shelf Distillers (14 Warren Cres.), there's a parking lot party. There is going to be good food, fancy drinks and great music. As you dance the night away, hopefully under starry skies, staff of Top Shelf Distillers will be collecting money as well as supplies for LAWS. At this time canned cat and kitten food (Friskies preferred) as well as bottles of bleach is most needed.
Car wash and barbecue Looking to get your car washed before the end of summer? This is the time Smiths Falls Ford will be hosting a car wash and barbecue in support of LAWS on Saturday, Aug. 25. Check in to our Facebook page for more details!
Adoption weekend Please mark your calendars for another scheduled adoption weekend in Perth at Pet Valu on Aug. 24-26. A LAWS representa-
Al
tive will be available with adoptable kittens and cats during these days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More details on our Facebook pages as to who is coming closer to these dates.
This week's featured pets Velvet and Paws Please meet Velvet and Paws, two four-year-old sisters who had to be surrendered to LAWS for unforeseen family reasons. They've lived with other cats and love to be around children. They're both very friendly. Velvet is a little more outgoing then Paws, but we're sure once they're in their true forever home, they will both spoil you with their love and affection. They're both declawed on their front little paws and have to be adopted together. They are available for adoption in Carleton Place at Natural Pet Foods on Bridge Street. Pete Hi, I am Pete, and my personality type is action! You won't find me sitting on the sidelines; I am always in for play and cuddle time. My previous family had no time for me and because of that I was surrendered to LAWS. If

you've got a lot of love and attention to give, and you're looking for a cat with loads of personality, I just might be the perfect match for you! Al Al is a special two-year-old boy
with extra toes on his front feet (polydactyl) and a long body with lovely markings. Deep buried in his genes he might have some Bengal in him. Al is ready for playtime and loves cuddles, but prefers to have all four paws on
the ground. He would love to go to a quiet family. Follow us at www.facebook.com/lanarkanimals and/ or lanarkanimals.ca. LAWS is located at 253 Glenview Rd., Smiths Falls.

DONNA SEARLE 1934 - 2018
With the passing of Donna Lorraine Searle (nee Patterson) in her 85th year, we pause to celebrate a life well lived. Donna enjoyed several successful careers as an educator, a farmer and an office administrator. Donna, the only child of Dr. Walter Henry Patterson and Evelyn Carr Patterson of Holland, Manitoba, was born on August 17, 1934. After earning a B.A. at the University of Winnipeg, Donna enthusiastically pursued a career in Christian Education with the United Church of Canada in a variety of communities in Manitoba and Ontario. Her next calling was farming near Clayton, Ontario. Donna and Stan were married under the apple tree at their farm in August of 1971 and forged a successful partnership which introduced Charolais beef cattle to eastern Ontario. Not only was Donna adept at showing prize winning cattle in the ring but also kept busy showing her best in class Boston Terriers at major competitions in Ontario and the United States. When Donna retired from farming, she began a career in office administration. Her dedication and organizational excellence provided a valuable contribution to the work of Almonte cabinetmaker John Brathwaite and area lawyers, Mike Ross, Allan Jones and Brooke McNabb. Donna lived a long and happy life thanks to the support of her wonderful husband Stan and her family, friends and neighbours. In recent years, she treasured the caring professionalism of a wonderful human being, Dr. Roger Drake, and the loving care of the staff at Stoneridge Manor nursing home in Carleton Place, Ontario. A private family celebration will be held.

MICHAEL JOHN SOLOWJEW August 19, 2016 You never said I’m leaving, You never said goodbye. You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. A million times I needed you A million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life I loved you dearly In death I love you still, In my heart you hold a place, That no one could ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. For part of me went with you, The day God called you home. Love, Wife Debbie and family

Ed Sonnenburg April 6, 1948 - August 19, 2014 4 years have passed since we lost a loving husband, dad and grandpa. God saw him getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around him. And whispered “Come To Me”. With tearful eyes, we watched him suffer, And saw him slowly fade away, Although we loved him dearly, We could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Love always Ev, Carrie, Laura and family

CONVERT MARGINAL LAND, ABANDONED FARM FIELDS INTO THRIVING FORESTS If you have marginal land or abandoned farm fields, now is the time to take advantage of significant subsidies to covert the land to forests. "Many landowners are choosing to make their land more productive and enjoyable by planting trees," says Scott Danford, Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) Forestry Program Manager. "There are significant subsidies available to help landowners plan, prepare and plant their forests. Planting two acres will cost landowners less than $300." Typical costs for the RVCA's full-service tree-planting program are $0.15/tree ($120/acre). The RVCA and its planting partners covers all additional costs. Landowners interested in having one acre or more (0.4 hectares) planted in trees should meet with RVCA staff to start planning now. "We have been planting trees since 1983 and have planted more than six million trees," says Danford. "We are committed to helping landowners meet their reforestation needs, while increasing
tree cover throughout the Rideau watershed." Woodlands can be established in old fields by promoting natural succession, but few landowners have the time or patience for this option. The quicker option is to plant trees through the Conservation Authority's program. The RVCA's tree planting program can help move things on a little faster. Professional staff will meet with landowners to discuss their interests and needs. RVCA staff will also inspect the site's conditions to help create a unique, individualized planting plan. The types of trees being planted will reflect the needs of the landowner and the site conditions - the goal being to plant the right tree in the right place to get the best chance of survival and growth. Now is the time to book your free site visit by contacting Scott Danford, RVCA Forestry Program Manager at 613-692-3571 or 1-800387-5304, ext. 1175. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, words flow effortlessly from your lips this week, and others are captivated by your tales. You can use this power and creative streak to your advantage.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, make a concerted effort to keep lines of communication open in the days ahead. This can benefit you and your loved ones in some surprising ways.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you may have been a little preoccupied of late. Focus on what has been on your mind and how it is affecting your relationships, making changes where necessary.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you feel like you are in the driver’s seat as it pertains to your love life and relationship this week. But a partnership requires sharing responsibilities.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, nearly everything you do this week will be connected to your career. Strategic moves come easily to you, and certain pieces may fall into place just when you need them to.
