PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Canada's first female-focused medicinal cannabis company, Fleurish (formerly called Farmacopia) has been granted its production licence by Health Canada. The 20,000-square foot facility, located outside Kemptville at 2725 County Road 20, rests on eight acres of farm land that will host both the cultivation area and a laboratory for research and development. Once the plant is fully operational, it will produce approximately 1,400 kilograms of cannabis annually. See PLANT, page 4

PLANT TO PRODUCE 1,400 KILOGRAMS OF CANNABIS ANNUALLY Continued from page 3

Now that the license has been acquired, Fleurish is able to begin cultivating cannabis, and the next step is to have their product quality assured. "Once we've proven that we have a consistent product and everything has been tested according to the standards of the ACMPR (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations), then we'll be granted a sales license," said Fleurish founder, Renée Ellison. She says this part of the process could take six to eight months. "It's just so exciting to have our cultivation license and be ready to move forward." Ellison is a former Health Canada employee, where she says she recognized an important female gap in the cannabis market. She was a team member who helped develop the federal regulations for medical marijuana, the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) - the first to commercialize the production and distribution of dried cannabis for medical purposes by a G8 country. For her work on the MMPR,

Ellison was the recipient of a Government of Canada award of excellence. She also has extensive experience in strategic communications and policy development, holding a degree in political science from York University and a diploma in advertising and marketing communications management (School of Business) from Sheridan College. Ellison's vision is built on a holistic approach to health, and she believes the Fleurish brand will empower women to make informed decisions about their use of medicinal cannabis. In the spring, Fleurish conducted a research study with 1,500 Canadian women to better understand the specifics of when, why, and how women prefer to use cannabis. "We wanted to understand their psychographic attitude towards health and wellness, as well as cannabis usage," said chief marketing officer, Mary Beth Williamson. "That research has really provided outstanding direction for us, so we can choose the optimal products to come out of the gate with." Their initial line of products

will offer three unique products specifically for women, including both dried flower and oral oils. As the Fleurish team gains experience and continues to grow, Williamson says they'll add to their variety of strains. They will also be looking to fill more positions at the farm in the near future. "As a smaller producer, we're very much focused on the quality of our product," said Ellison. "We are able to conduct a more indepth level of research to hone-in on what is optimal for women. We're going to be focusing on creating that craft quality, premium product." Aside from acquiring their cultivation licence on Aug. 3, Fleurish also recently took on a new name. "We were called Farmacopia, and in the time that it took us to get licensed, there was a company in California by the same name that was able to build a strong online presence for their health and wellness centre," Ellison said. "So, instead of competing with that, we decided to consider our other options." Fleurish engaged with three

Pictured: Renee Ellison, founder of Fleurish, tours the site of the production facilities on County Road 20, just outside of Kemptville on Aug. 20. different advertising companies and ultimately came back with two names to choose from: Fleurish or Milla. "It's a bit of a funny story, because Milla is actually one of my daughters' names," said Ellison. "But it's also short for 'Sensimilla;' a highly potent and seedless female marijuana plant. Following a vote from the company's management team and board members, Fleurish was chosen. "We like it because it illus-

trates the idea of helping women flourish in all aspects of their lives," said Williamson. Along with the new name, Fleurish recently launched a new visual identity, including product packaging concepts. With the legalization of recreational cannabis slated for this fall, Williamson says Fleurish will certainly be looking to break into that market as well. They anticipate beginning cultivation by the end of September, with their first harvest in December.

Living with a mood disorder, like depression or anxiety, is much like running a marathon. It's an endurance game, and you are in it for the long haul. Like a marathon run, some days are smooth and steady and you're in a groove, but other days are an uphill climb. On Aug. 18, Clay Williams an ultramarathon runner from Elmira, Ont., headed out to lead a group of relay runners in the 785 km Canal Pursuit for Mental Health to Defeat Depression. The Canal Pursuit is a 785 km run roughly following the Trent Severn Canal from Port Severn to Trenton, then along the Rideau Canal from Kingston to Ottawa, stopping in at each of the 88 locks on the way, and ending at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill on Aug. 25 at roughly 4:30 p.m. On Aug. 24, Williams and his group will be making their way through Merrickville. They will be starting the day near Newboro, with an anticipated arrival time of 7:30 p.m. in Merrickville. There will be an exchange of a flag at that time. The first two years of this event, Williams ran this race on his own, running nearly 100 km each day, and by day five he sustained a personal injury, but he persevered to fin-

ish his run on time. In 2017 he realized, just as mental illness gets easier when you reach out for help, so too would his run be easier and more enjoyable with help. Now in its fourth year, the Canal Pursuit for Mental Health is a relay run, involving approximately 40 runners, each running different lengths, along the route with scheduled stops to visit with local first responders, sports clubs, community groups, health groups and media along the way. Depression is one of the most common forms of mental illness and it strikes all socioeconomic, educational, and cultural backgrounds. The World Health Organization predicts that Depression will be the leading cause of disability by 2020. In Canada, one in five Canadians will suffer this year with their mental health, yet community mental health organizations struggle to keep up with the demand for support due to lack of funding. Funds raised from Williams' Canal Pursuit for Mental Health support the national programs of the Mood Disorders Society of Canada, such as the National Defeat Depression Campaign which helps fund local mental health programs in com-

"The conversation that we want to promote with this project is two-fold," Williams said. "First, if you're struggling with a mood disorder, talk to someone you trust. The second part of the message is that physical activity can help make many symptoms of mood disorders more manageable, fitting in with the national Defeat Depression campaign." He runs in honour of his wife, his daughter and his sister who all suffer from mood disorders, and in memory of his two older brothers who took their own lives. ABOUT US

I recently read Sarah Selecky's new book, Radiant Shimmering Light, and it got me thinking about what has become known in popular culture as "wellness". What does it mean to be "well" and how much should it cost? Are there items you can purchase that will allow you to achieve this aim more efficiently? If there are, count me in. I will gladly fork over my hard-earned dollars to live a more serene existence. The trouble is, I'm also a bit of a skeptic. My mom always told me that if something seems to good to be true, it usually is. How amazing would it be if rubbing lavender essential oil on my feet before bed helped manage my insomnia, or if taking a specific vitamin cocktail at the first sign of a throat tickle banished the common cold virus? I have spent more money than I wish to admit on these and other items because I want, so badly, for these cures to be true. Yet in my heart, I know it's all a sham - which is probably why this novel made me literally laugh out loud more times than I can count on my two hands. If anything in this world needs to be satirized, it's the "wellness industry". It's ridiculous enough to be funny, but also not *too* destructive at the same time. Unlike the current political climate, which is becoming increasing difficult to effectively satirize because it itself resembles

satire and that's just sad, there is nothing particularly dark and sinister about someone purchasing a vaginal jade egg on a quest for better orgasms. It's not like Gwyneth Paltrow is out to actively harm and mislead people with Goop. She makes (A LOT OF) money selling an aspirational brand. If people want to pay twice as much for a bottle of water that's not stripped of electrons, and that makes them feel better and healthier in their own skin, there is nothing particularly *wrong* with that - but few of us would deny it deserves to be mocked. Moreover, at what point does profiting from your passion become off-putting commodification? Who is really at fault for the appalling number of people who waste an astonishing amount of money on largely ineffective wellness products? Are those who profit from them evil marketing overlords or are these consumers responsible for their own regrettable purchasing choices? Perhaps more to the point: if questionable wellness-related purchases genuinely make one happy, and maybe even offer a slight benefit (even of the placebo variety) is there really a huge problem here? Some people waste their money on beer, others on essential oils. I've never heard anyone accuse craft beer makers of being evil marketing overlords. So what is the difference here, really? HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR CANADA? INTRIGUED BY A MYSTERY LETTER, LAURIE WEIR RE-DISCOVERS SOME HISTORY LAURIE WEIR Column

I received a letter in the mail Aug. 17. I always enjoy receiving letters – be they hate mail, for print, or a thank you card (these are rare gems that are treasured!) but this one was a mystery letter, addressed to ‘Editor Ms? Laurie Weir and Staff’ – yes, the question mark beside the honourific was a cute touch. There was no return address, nor was it signed. One of the stipulations for letters to the editor, if they are to appear in print, is that they need to be signed. There also needs to be a phone number so that we can call the writer and verify it. There were some stickers – stars on the front of the envelope, a singing bird on the back, along with a shiny ‘Canada’ sticker, under which the writer had penned in red ink and un-

derlined, ‘THE MAGNIFICENT LAND.’ Intrigued, I opened it, found a letter and a card. It was a note card, pink with swirls, and inside was written: “Kindness is like a boomerang, it always returns. Enjoy your day, from a glad and grateful Canadian.” I opened the orange piece of paper and found the hand-written note, entitled, “Do you know your country, CANADA? There were some triviatype questions that I read aloud, and not many were answered by myself or the newsroom staff in the office today. So I ask you dear reader, how well do you know your Canada? 1. Where is the Norman Bethune Memorial House? 2. Name five fathers of Confederation. 3. What is The Queen’s Plate? 4. Where is the Bush Pilots Memorial? 5. Name the Chief of the Blackfoot who signed Treaty 7.

6. Who were The Riders of the Plains? 7. Name Canada’s highest mountain, and for whom it was named. 8. What and where is Rideau Hall? 9. Name five islands in our Artic Archipelago. 10. What and where is The Golden Boy? 11. Who was E. Pauline Johnson? 12. Who designed the outstanding Vimy Memorial? 13. Who was Sir Samuel Cunard? 14. What and where is the Tower of God? 15. Name 10 Canadian Rivers. 16. Where are Peace, Spirit, and High rivers? To find the answers, I resorted to Google, and my entire column can be found with the answers on our website: www.insideottawavalley.com. There's a new event livening up downtown Kemptville one Tuesday at a time. The Tuesday Night Scene, held at Geronimo Coffee House, showcases local food and live music on the second Tuesday of every month. Co-hosts Bruce Enloe and Justin Ralph began the recurring event in March to provide some weeknight nightlife to the downtown core. The concert aspect of the evening is intended to recreate the intimate "listening room" setting that was regularly established at Enloe's former dining establishment where he was owner, chef and musician - the Branch Restaurant and Texas Grill. "I was thinking about some of the things that I missed about the Branch," said Enloe. The goal was to recreate the listening room atmosphere, and he wanted to do it in a place that encourages song writing. "Geronimo was a very natural fit, because a lot of the community that used to enjoy these types of things back when we were doing them at the restaurant have found their way over here these days," he said. The carefully selected musicians at the Tuesday Night Scene play original music only. There are typically three acts, including a special guest, and two sets of music played "in the round," followed by a solo set from the featured performer. Lucky audiences often get to hear the story behind the song, too, and many of them are inspired by the artists' travels while on tour.

Featured performer at the Tuesday Night Scene on July 17, Lynne Hanson, shared a personal story about perseverance while enduring a leg injury that debilitated her long-term. "Up until about a year ago, I thought I was never going to be able to do the things I could do before. I'd bike for 50 kilometres, I'd go for huge hikes ... but honestly, a 30minute walk and I'd be in pain and have to go home. It was really hard, because it hurt all the time," she said. "In November, I was out west on tour and I ended up going for a seven-hour hike in Banff National Park. It was the most spectacular view, but coming down was a nightmare. As it turns out, coming down is worse than going up. I was hustling as fast as I could, and I was in so much pain, but I got back to the parking lot and when I sat in the car and finally got off my leg, I just thought. It was worth every bit of it, because when you think you're never going to be able to do something like that again, and then you do, everything is just so much sweeter." "I've toured everywhere," she continued, "and when you get to walk into a room like this, it's so warm and welcoming. A night like tonight, honestly, I'll remember this. It's obvious that the owners love this place, and you listen to what we have to say - you listen to our songs, and it makes us feel like what we do is what we're supposed to be doing." Hanson played the song Gotta Have Rain to close her set, stating, "because we can't appreciate the flowers without a little bit of rain first."

If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss.1 Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension could become difficult. The right hearing aid could help you improve your comprehension.

Lloyd was born into a farm family in Metcalfe Corners and was well known for his Surge milking machine dealership in North Gower and later moved to Manotick, where he built his home and shop. Lloyd was heavily involved with the Ottawa Carleton Plowmen's Association and the International Plowing Match held in Richmond in 1983. In September 2001, the Ottawa-Carleton Plowmen's Association and the Ontario Plowmen's Association hosted Rural Expo 2001, the International Plowing Match, in Navan. This event had two goals; to promote the agricultural community and to provide a lasting legacy to the community. As part of this legacy, supporters of the 2001 match continue to raise funds for patient care at Ottawa area hospitals, through the Plowing Fore A Cure golf tournament.

EVENT PROMOTES NIGHTLIFE IN DOWNTOWN CORE Continued from page 9

Guests of the Tuesday Night Scene are also treated to a family-style, locally-sourced meal prepared by Enloe himself. For July's Tuesday Night Scene, Enloe served up a pork polenta dish using pastured pork belly from Aman Farm in Plum Hollow, Ont. "I basically made bacon," he said. "I brined it overnight with a salt and vinegar brine, and then slow smoked it. It was layered with spinach, polenta and tomato sauce." For every Tuesday night meal, a vegetarian version is also offered. The next Tuesday Night Scene will be held at Geronimo Coffee House on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. with the "Lioness of Lanark," folk singer-songwriter, Ali McCormick, and featured

act Brock Zeman of Carleton Place, best known as a writer of great depth and passion. Over the course of his career, Zeman has released 12 studio albums, and his sound draws from roots-rock and alternative country, though many would say that his music doesn't exactly fit the traditional framework of genre. "They're two of the best songwriters around," said Enloe. For September's Tuesday Night Scene, Enloe will prepare an authentic Texas-style barbecue dinner - a smoked beef brisket plate; his signature dish at the Branch. Due to the calibre of the musical lineup and the special meal, tickets are expected to sell out quickly. They can be purchased for $35 each at www.TuesdayNightScene.com.

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Above, event co-host and chef, Bruce Enloe, belts out a ballad. Right, Lynne Hanson serenades the audience at the July 17 Tuesday Night Scene at Geronimo Coffee House. The next edition will take place Sept. 18 featuring Ali McCormick and Brock Zeman. Tickets are $35 each and are expected to sell out quickly.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO ENCOURAGE THE FARMER TO REPAIR THE DOOR, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column

each other. I assumed the stray tom was back in the area and went out the front door to save my cat from harm. But there was no one out there. The howling continued, so I went back in through the house to check out the back porch. On my way past the den, I realized the howling was inside the house. And a cat tail was sticking out of the dog's crate. I pulled the sleep-curtain that covers Fergus' crate aside and saw that Sammy (owner of the protruding tail) had cornered a white and brown cat in the kennel. We don't own a white and brown cat. "Hey honey," I called to the Farmer. "Come see this. This is not my cat." I explained to my husband that the intruder must have entered through the cat door, like everyone else. He picked up the extremely friendly kitten and gently placed him outside, shooing him in the general direction of the house next door, where he actually lives. But a visit from the neighbour's pet does not seem to be enough to encourage him to repair the broken screen door. What will it take? Waking up to find a raccoon snacking on cookies at the end of our bed? Encountering a skunk in the hallway during a midnight bathroom break? I may have to stage an incident to prove my point. In the meantime, I am going to Google how to remove a screen door. Diana Leeson Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. Our well-used, wellworn farmhouse was in the best shape it's been in the past decade when we hosted our daughter's wedding in June. We had new hardwood floors and fresh paint and the porch had been rebuilt after our October fire. That was the fire that redeemed the trio of lazy cats who live in our basement. Well, one of them, anyway. The other two are just riding Sammy's tail and reaping the benefits of his celebrated heroism. Sammy is the one who led the charge up the stairs and down the hall to our bedroom that fateful night. Sammy is the one who woke me and alerted me to the fact that our front porch was on fire. The cats saved the house and us! - that night. The firefighters said five more minutes and the flames would have reached the roof, burning the house from the top down, possibly without even activating the fire alarms. Nice thought. So anyway, the Farmer's rhetorical "tell me again why we have three fat, lazy cats in the house?!" was answered that night and I suspect he won't be asking it again for a while. But this latest development in Life With Cats does not bode well for our felines. The other day I was in the kitchen, having successfully (I thought) locked Sammy and his buddies outside, when I felt something brush my leg. "How did you get back in?!"

Someone decided to create their own cat door in our sliding screen patio door. Our cats prefer to stay in the house and when a beautiful day with birds chirping and a breeze blowing lures them out onto the back deck, they like to reserve the right to return indoors at a moment's notice. Thus the creation of a cat door in the bottom of my screen. I pointed it out to the Farmer, who shrugged and mumbled something about further destruction of his abode by animals of a feline persuasion. He's much more of a dog person. I guess that means repairing the door is not on the top of his priority list. Neither is painting the front door that the dog scratched up, actually. The Farmer's mind is on Bass Lake these days, where he is building a cottage. It's kind of like the shoemaker's kids having no shoes and the hairstylist's kids having terrible hair. I can't get that man focused on the "Honey Do" list at home. So Sammy lets himself out onto the porch through his handy escape hatch. He hides in the vines and cluck-clucks at the birds on the feeder. When he is bored with that, he slinks back inside through the broken screen. The screen is lifted and curled back about a foot and the rough edge is covered in cat hair. It's quite a mess. I threatened to take the door off and bring it into Home Hardware to have the screen replaced. The Farmer said, "Don't be ridiculous; I can repair that myself." The other night we were watching TV when we heard cats howling at

(613-269-4791) DATED AT THE VILLAGE OF MERRICKVILLE-WOLFORD THIS 17th DAY OF August, 2018. D. Robertson, CAO/Clerk/Economic Development Director

EXPLANATORY NOTE The proposed Zoning By-law Amendment affects a portion of a property (approximately 549 m2) located on the West side of Charlotte Street in Merrickville. The applicant is proposing to construct a semi-detached dwelling. The proposed Amendment would re-zone the area from the “Residential Type 2 holding” (R2h) Zone to the Residential Type 2-Exception” (R2-2) Zone. The purpose of the proposed Amendment is twofold:

KEY MAP

• to lift the “holding” provision to allow development to proceed; and • to permit a reduced setback from the existing drainage ditch.

GARRY INTRODUCES HIS SONG - FROM THE GREAT BEYOND LYLE DILLABOUGH WRITES ABOUT MAKING A LATE COUSIN'S DREAM COME TRUE LYLE DILLABOUGH Column

Sometimes there is nothing else one can do but smile. This is a true story about that. It involves my late cousin, Arthur Garry VanDusen, a song he wrote and a prediction he once made. You see Garry (he was always known as Garry to me) was a big truck-driving, back hoe-operating, mechanical type of a guy who could fix anything. A couple of his mottos were: "If we can't find the part then we will just have to make it" or, "A car ain't a car unless there's a piece of barnyard wire hanging from it somewhere." Garry was also a songwriter. Who would have guessed it? This big, kind of loud-mouthed truck driver -- a love song writer? Yep. One evening back in 1984, he shows up with the lyrics to a song he'd titled

Choice

Weekend Lovers. It was about a girlfriend he had at the time who he saw on weekends. He wanted me to put music to it, which I did, and it was recorded onto a cassette tape. (Remember them?) Soon he came up with other songs and one of those was a little ditty called Get Out Lout. This was a phrase, or demand, he'd apparently heard directed his way a time or two over the course of his life. Garry really loved Weekend Lovers and Get Out Lout. He used to say, "One day I'm going to introduce my song on the bona fide airways!" The "bona fide airwaves" to him referred to the AM/FM channels where commercial radio stations broadcast. Garry died on Jan. 3, 2004. Before he died, he came by my place with a CD that had Get Out Lout on it. I sent it to my friend at CHIP-FM in Fort Coulonge, Quebec. And shortly after, I heard it played on the air. I smiled with a bit of a tear in my eye when I thought of how this tune (recorded on a "ghetto-blaster") somehow found its way onto mainstream FM radio. However, the best was yet to come. I recorded a version of Weekend Lovers in Almonte in 2002. Garry

didn't like this version, but I included it on my Sounds Along the Line CD in 2002 anyway. Just to rub it in, you might say. I took a "rough introduction" in Garry's voice that he'd taped to introduce an older version of the song and then edited it onto the newer track. On Jan. 3, 2005, the first anniversary of his death, Linda Elliott announced on CHIP-FM at exactly 4:51 p.m. that she was going to "play a song by Lyle Dillabough." (Both Garry's CB radio handle and favourite number was 451) And what came on the air? None other than Garry's voice introducingWeekend Lovers. And sure enough, the song began to play, just like Garry said he would one day do. He introduced his song - in death nonetheless! Which only tells me one thing: that faith is one mighty force. And no matter what else we may endure in our lives there are times when all you can do is sit back, wonder, shake your head, and just smile. Lyle Dillabough is a local musician who writes for the Ottawa Valley newspapers. He can be reached at 613-257-9002 or email: lyleproductions@gmail.com.

FILL THE BUS FUNDRAISER HEADING FOR KEMPTVILLE AUG. 24 INITIATIVE SUPPORTS HOUSE OF LAZARUS With the end of summer fast approaching, it's me once again for House of Lazarus (HOL)'s annual Fill the Bus fundraiser. "Fill the Bus makes a huge difference for us," HOL client services manager Kim Merkley said. "It carries us through the rest of the summer and into the fall, helping us prepare kids and their families for back to school." Sponsored by Kemptville's Coldwell Banker Coburn Realty Brokerage, this year's Fill the Bus event is set for Friday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be two buses, one each at Jonsson's Your Independent Grocer and Walmart Kemptville Supercentre. Both Lannin's Buslines and Wubs Transit have graciously

volunteered a bus and driver for the occasion. "We couldn't survive without the surrounding community," Merkley said, noting that HOL relies on donations from community members for its stores, as well as for its food bank and special outreach programs and projects. "This fundraiser, for example, is only possible because of the support from both Kemptville stores, the two bus lines and Coldwell Banker," she added. With volunteers from Glengarry Inter-Agency Group's Dundas Youth Centre, Merkley and her HOL helpers will be on site at both venues to greet visitors and accept donations. The outreach mission is looking for non-perishable food items for its food bank, along with school supplies and/or monetary donations. House of Lazarus is a food bank

and outreach mission located in Mountain, serving hundreds of clients from surrounding communities, including all of Dundas County, Grenville County and South Ottawa. Last year, 600 people were fed through HOL's food bank, while 2,630 people were provided with food, clothing, furniture, and household goods through its outreach programming. A community-supported venture, House of Lazarus does not rely on government funding. It's through HOL thrift stores, grants, donations, and fundraisers that its projects and programs happen. For more information on this or other House of Lazarus projects, please visit www.houseoflazarus.com or follow the mission on Facebook. Submitted by House of Lazarus

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is advising the low water status in the Rideau River watershed generally remains at "minor" severity except for the Kemptville Creek sub-watershed which has risen to "moderate" severity. Rainfall in eastern Ontario has been widely varied since late July. What rain that has fallen in the Kemptville Creek sub-watershed has had little effect on flows with much of it infiltrating into the soil and retained in wetlands. The creek is down to intermittent pools in some sections. Beaver have been active, building dams that contribute to the ponding. At the same time, they are creating pools upstream of their dams they are causing or expanding dry sections downstream. The ponding on Kemptville Creek and other streams has left fish and other aquatic populations to cope with confined spaces, warmer water and declining oxygen concentrations. Conditions in the rest of the Rideau watershed are closer to "minor" severity which has been in place for the last two weeks. Much less rain than was forecast fell on Thursday and Friday last week. Water levels continue to decline and all monitoring stations are showing levels below average. Rain is forecast for this week but,

with weather systems as erratic as they have been, it remains to be seen how significant an impact there will be. The Rideau Canal reservoir lakes all continue to have levels below normal. Sufficient draft is still available for boats on the system but caution is advised. Other lakes have also had falling water levels and aquatic plants and algae are thriving on some due to the warm temperatures and shallower depths Longer range forecasts indicate warmer and dryer conditions than normal through the rest of the summer and into the fall. If that forecast comes to pass, flows and levels can be expected to fall well below normal. Water conservation should be practiced by everyone within the Rideau River watershed. Various actions all contribute to the conservation of our water resources. Municipalities may have invoked water restrictions and burn bans so check your municipal website for applicable bylaws. Those who have permits for taking water from surface or groundwater sources are encouraged to reduce their actual taking as much as possible. Submitted by the Rideau Conservation Authority

ANNUAL FISHING DERBY HONOURS SAM TOBIAS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Family members, friends, and neighbours of Sam Tobias attended the third Sam's Annual Fishing Derby on the dock behind Salamanders Restaurant in downtown Kemptville on Sat-

urday, Aug. 18. The event, hosted by the North Grenville Public Library (NGPL), was held in honour of Sam Tobias, a local boy whose life was taken at the age of eight due to a rare genetic neurological disease called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). He passed

away in 2013. "This is just a spot where he'd love to come and fish with his dad," recalled Sam's mother, Nicole Thompson. "He used to like to see who'd catch the most fish." Sue Bergeron from the NGPL says Sam also loved to visit the

library, where a free barbecue was held following the fishing event. "Sam would catch, like, ten sunfish," his mother laughed, "and now his cousins have just caught some." It was a good fishing day for many.

MARGUIRITE'S OVERNIGHT VISIT COMES TO A SUDDEN END FATHER FORCED TO DRIVE HER HOME AT MIDNIGHT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Why bad Marguirite would want to come to my house to spend a night was beyond me. She would be leaving electric lights and flush toilet! But her mother had phoned and said the long summer holidays would soon be over, and her young daughter (who nobody liked at the Northcote School) would very much like to sleep over one night at my house before school started back in September. My sister Audrey

wasn't at all pleased. She would have to sleep on the creton couch in the kitchen to give up her bed she shared with me. Mother telling her it would only be for one night did little to stop Audrey's complaining. Marguirite arrived with her mother in their brand new car, and she bounded out with a little leather suitcase, which caused my brother Emerson to wonder if she planned on moving in. The boys had been warned to behave, and supper, to my complete surprise, went off without a hitch. Marguirite even had seconds. She and I played house with my dolls until it was bedtime, and then we climbed the stairs, Mother making sure the three boys were settled down first. I saw her wag a finger at their doorway. She didn't have to say a word. They knew what that

meant. I should have known the night wouldn't pass without Marguirite causing a stir. Mother barely had her foot on the last step going downstairs with the coal oil lamp, when Marguirite said she had to use the privy. The chamber pot under the bed, she said, was out of the question. Of course, I had to go with her. We passed through the kitchen where Mother and Father were still sitting. Audrey glared at Marguirite from the creton couch. The trip out to the back house was followed by three others, one right after the other. The fourth time down, Marguirite stopped dead right in the middle of the kitchen floor and started bawling her eyes out. "I want to go home," she wailed. Well, there was no way you could call her mother on the phone at that hour of

the night. The ring would waken the entire neighbourhood of Northcote. Father knew what he had to do. He pulled his overalls on over his long underwear, while Marguirite tore upstairs to get her genuine leather suitcase, passing Audrey who was on her way upstairs to reclaim her bed. By the time Father got the old Model T out of the drive shed, Marguirite was already outside on the back stoop. Everyone but Audrey was wide-awake, and Mother said there was no reason we all couldn't have a cup of hot chocolate before going back up to bed. By the time Father got back, the old kitchen clock was just about to strike midnight. Emerson said we might as well stay up the rest of the night and play euchre. Father never said a word. Looking like a thunder

cloud, he headed right into the bedroom off the kitchen. Mother said at breakfast the next morning, he didn't even stop long enough to take his clothes off. BARNDOOR'S 'WILLM SHAKSPER' A SURPRISING TREAT AT FULL CIRCLE THEATRE A hundred years ago, H.F. Rubinstein and Clifford Bax's Shakespeare was an adventurous play for its time, daring to imagine William Shakespeare as an actual man, rather than as a legend. Perth's BarnDoor Productions has taken that now-public domain play and reworked it extensively in light of the many items about the life of Shakespeare that have become known since. The result is Willm Shaksper, a two-hour journey through the life and mind of the English language's greatest writer. In five "episodes," the play goes from Shakespeare's first attempts to gain fame in London through his middle years until just before his death in 1616. Its eight cast members play nearly 20 roles, most of them historic characters; the one or two that aren't may be found in Shakespeare's plays, if you look hard enough. First nighters offered comments like: "An amazing produc-

Submitted/BarnDoor Productions BarnDoor Productions' new play Willm Shaksper takes its audience from the streets of Elizabethan London to the rural fields of Stratford on Avon. Here, the stage of the Globe Theatre is the setting, as Young Will (Garrett Pipher, right) oversees a rehearsal for Hamlet, with The Dark Lady (Grace Poltrack, left) and W.H. (Slade Stoodley) watching while The Stage Keeper (Tyler Street, centre) tries to keep up with the demands of Dick Burbage (Ian Jenner, back to camera). The show runs Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday at 1:30 p.m. through Aug. 26. tion," "This play is a marvel" and, "Simply wonderful." In particular, the play's language caught the audience. "When you think of Shakespeare, you think of complex language. Here it is, but it's just every-

etry when needed and back again all of it perfectly understandable and all moving the play along at a rapid pace. The set for the show is deceptively simply, starting with the players entering and turning the pile of furniture on the stage into the setting for the first scene. Just when the audience get used to the idea of the play's skeletal pillars and panelled backdrop showing Elizabethan London, it suddenly is transformed into the enclosed stage of the Globe and then again opened up to show the green fields of rural Stratford. Each scene change takes about five seconds. The costumes, by Leslie Henderson Armstrong, with additional pieces by Marilyn Bird and Sarah Cochrane, are a treat for the eyes. The characters, particularly The Dark Lady and W.H., sparkle and shine. The Elizabethan ruffs and collars instantly place the show in its time. It's the energy and commitment of the cast that make the play work, however. Each cast member has their own moment (or moments) to shine. Ian Jenner gets to play both Ned Alleyne and Richard Burbage, the two greatest actors of their time: the pompous Alleyne is balanced by the sincere Burbage. Tyler Street provides fun in Act One as Poor Tom, a beggar, and The Stage-keeper of the Globe Theatre, before reappearing in Act Two as The Poet, a young man who may take Shakespeare's place, now that Will is old and feeble. Brian Atterbury is Will Kemp, the most famous clown of Shakespeare's day, so dedicated to his clowning that he wears his motley costume day and night. He also provides some musical interludes at the end of scenes with a charming baritone. As Shakespeare's attorney in Act Two, it's he who

draws up Will's will, including the famous item of "my second-best bed" left to his wife. Slade Stoodley gets to romp through the play as a pair of playwrights and a lord: he is Christopher Marlowe in the first scene (author of Doctor Faustus, among others); W.H., the "fair youth" of Shakespeare's sonnets, in scenes two and three; then Ben Jonson, the only real rival to Shakespeare as a playwright, in scene four. Ursula Rice-Leech starts off as Joan Henslowe, the object of Will's transparent attempts to gain favour from her producer father; then she becomes he being she, as actor Dick Robinson, playing The Queen in Hamlet. Then in Act Two, she is Judith Shakespeare, Will's daughter, who comes to rescue him. Grace Poltrack is The Dark Lady, a mysterious figure from Shakespeare's sonnets who may have been any of several women. Here, she is Bess, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth and she leads Young Will on a heartbreaking ride, before leaving him for good. In a nice twist, Bess pretends to be Shakespeare's Stratford wife, Anne Hathaway, at one point in Act One, and in Act Two, Poltrack returns as Anne, who is every bit the harridan that was predicted in Act One. That leaves a pair of Wills. Garrett Pipher is Young Will in Act One, going from a brash young man willing to do almost anything to become recognized to a disillusioned, angry man. David Bird is Older Will in Act Two, a man who finds his talent leaving him, his life grown desperate and finally, his health gone. Bird's 50-year-old Shakespeare is physically almost identical to the portraits we know so well, a costuming and makeup achievement, but it is the performance that makes the role. Willm Shaksper is something very different from what you will see elsewhere this summer. It is fast, bright, funny, colourful, dramatic, musical, full of delightful characters and wonderful language and a set of performances that bring William Shakespeare to very vibrant life. Willm Shaksper runs Thursday to Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the air-conditioned, ground-level, barrier-free Full Circle Theatre, 26 Craig St., Perth. Tickets are just $20 reserved. To reserve, call 613-267-1884 or visit www.barndoorproductions.ca. No credit card required; cash at the performance is requested. Submitted by BarnDoor Productions

"Good afternoon Brian, As a motorcycle rider, I am especially sensitive to the problem of distracted driving. My question relates to the nav/entertainment/communication displays that seem to be cropping up in newer cars. Neither of our current cars has one, so I cannot contribute anything from my own experience, but could using one of these systems while driving constitute distracted driving? If so, do you know of any initiative by MTO to address this? Yours in curiosity," Bob Thanks for the great question, but, unfortunately, the answer might not make you feel any safer on the road. You would think that almost everything that goes into building a vehicle for public roads today would have to pass some stringent tests under government rules and regulations designed to keep us safe, but that's not quite the case. When it comes to driver distraction caused by the auto itself, it's almost the Wild West regarding how much technology a carmaker can stuff onto a dash and how much time it takes a driver to take his or her attention off the road to perform simple tasks. Some carmakers lock out a number of functions on infotainment/navigation systems while the car is in motion, but these applications vary widely from make to make and model to model. Navigation systems are the worst, taking an average of 40 seconds of the driver's attention away from the job of safely operating the vehicle in order to input an address. A substantial number of automakers don't lock this function out when the vehicle is in motion. In Canada this type of concern would fall to the federal Department of Transportation (DOT)

and in the U.S. it's under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As with most vehicle features, we in Canada pretty much have to live with and trust the decisions of NHTSA as they have the larger ability to test, review, and enforce regulations on carmakers in North America compared to us. But even the mighty NHTSA has little bite behind their bark on this subject. Under pressure from industry (not the public or insurance companies, but carmakers themselves), in 2012 they issued voluntary safety guidelines to automakers for dashboard technology instead of enforceable safety standards. The guidelines recommend that automakers lock out the ability to program navigation systems while a car is moving. A recent study completed last year by the American Automobile Association revealed that a whopping 23 of the 30 new vehicles tested earned a "very high" or "high" rating in terms of distracting their drivers. Keep in mind the volunteers that piloted these rides for this study were between 21 and 36 years of age. Makes you wonder what the results would have been had they sampled a larger piece of the driving demographic pie. But in the end, we, as drivers are the final cog in overall road safety and we can't really pass the blame when we allow ourselves to become distracted. Melita Momma1 Hi my name is Momma1 and I am as sweet as I am beautiful and I can't wait to meet my new best friend! I am living with other cats at the shelter since October last year. I think a quiet home with a regular routine where I can quickly get in the swing of things would suit me best. I do enjoy multiple short play times but my favourite past time is lounging in

Boots Hi, I am Boots and just two years old. I am a bit of everything you'd expect from a kitty. I enjoy a bit of quiet time, but I am no couch potato. I enjoy my catnaps and I like affection, but I am content to entertain myself until you're ready for me to warm your lap. I guess I am just a little bit of all good things wrapped up in a gorgeous fur-coat

Melita is a very friendly threeyear-old cat who was found astray walking the streets with Mikaela, who meanwhile, has been adopted. This lovely black beauty is always ready for playtime but prefers to have her paws on the ground. She likes to sit next to you for much appreciated affection. Melita is good with the other cats in her room and would welcome a loving home to move in to. She is available at LAWS.

COUPONS

Hi, I am four-month-old Sneakers and I'll be sent to Perth Pet Valu, with my three siblings, on Friday, Aug. 24 for the adoption weekend. I am a whirlwind of energy and quite entertaining to watch while I race around chirping to myself. I am extremely curious and rambunctious. It would be great to be adopted into a home with at lease one of my siblings or a home with another cat or dog. I grew up in a foster home and my foster mom loves to snuggle with me as she listens to my loud happy purr. Submitted by LAWS

RAIL PASSENGER OPTIONS IN CANADA SADLY LACKING DECLINE OF RAIL SERVICE HAS BEEN DIFFICULT, WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE. JEFF MAGUIRE Column

In Carleton Place, where we live, there are a few remaining tributes to the town's once proud railway history. One wall of the former Edward's Grocery store at the corner of Franktown Road and Coleman Street features a large mural depicting "the last train to Carleton Place." Town Council here was wise enough to purchase the local railway station which was once such a hub of activity in the community. Our station escaped the fate of so many others across Canada which have long since been demolished. Nearby another large stone structure is now home to the Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers which, among other things, is a clearing house for the vast majority of wool produced in Canada. Previously the expansive building was a railway roundhouse and repair centre. The Wool Growers' owners have been good enough to incorporate what amounts to a small railway museum featuring photos, advertisements and railway paraphernalia from the past. Sadly there are no longer any railway tracks in Carleton Place. Soon after they closed both local rail lines had the tracks removed. The corridors have since been turned

over for use as public trails. I have always been a huge fan of trains. I've travelled extensively on them in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Continental Europe. So for me the decline of passenger rail service in this country has been difficult to witness. Trains are such a fast, cost-efficient way to travel and much of our region is crying out for light rail commuter service. With no tracks and the right of ways turned over for other uses the likelihood of that happening is virtually zero! Last week my faith in train travel was renewed when my son Craig and I took a baseball trip to Toronto. We travelled to and from Canada's largest city using Fallowfield Station in Ottawa, near our son's Barrhaven home. On the way to Toronto the VIA train arrived exactly on time! Three days later we were 20 minutes late travelling home but we couldn't have cared less. The train was comfortable (far more comfortable than an aircraft for example) and the amenities and services were excellent. The problem is how limited passenger rail service is in Ontario and across the country. Our nearest station is in Smiths Falls, a 20 minute drive south. VIA Rail claims to serve more than 450 communities across Canada. But a quick check tells me there are nearly 3,600 places in

the country that are subject to some form of municipal government. I'm sure those municipalities can, in many cases, be subdivided into multiple communities. On visiting Regina, when my daughter and her family lived there, I was shocked to find the city is not served by VIA Rail. The capital of Saskatchewan and the province's second largest city has no passenger rail service. I was told the best VIA Rail option is in Saskatoon which is nearly a three hour drive. We are fortunate to live close to the Quebec CityWindsor rail corridor, the busiest passenger route in the nation. At its best VIA Rail is excellent in my experience and I highly recommend it. For most Canadian communities, however, passenger rail and commuter rail service is an unattainable dream. I think that is disgraceful, especially considering the times we live in when removing as many motor vehicles as possible from our overburdened highway system could provide a major boost for the transportation network as a whole and ultimately help our environment. Evelyn Harford/Metroland Ian Hyman, who has Parkinson's, participates at Boxing 4 Health in Smiths Falls.

PARKINSON'S SUPER WALK AT CONLON FARM IN PERTH SEPT. 8 Saturday, Sept. 8 is the date for the second annual Parkinson SuperWalk Lanark North Leeds which again will be held at Conlon Farm, 109 Smith Drive in Perth starting at 10 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine with music, food, demos and information about Parkinson's. Patricia Boal, CTV Ottawa News anchor will MC and mayors John Fenik of Perth and Shawn Pankow of Smiths Falls will be there to lend their support. The relaxed two-kilmometre walk around the park and adjacent neighbourhood however is not the most important goal of the walk. "The day marks an opportunity for people with Parkinson's disease to come together for a common purpose; to raise funds and awareness while having fun at the same time," says co-chair of the walk, Gayle Truman. Last September, the notable success of the first local SuperWalk (over $31,000 was raised), underlined the need for increased services in Lanark North Leeds. Since last year's walk, a support group and two new exercise programs have opened in Smiths Falls. An educational event was organized through the Ontario Telemedicine Network as part of Parkinson's Awareness Month last April bringing the expertise of a leading researcher and neurologist and neuro-physiotherapists to Lanark North Leeds and information sessions have been organized with local health care providers. Parkinson's is the second most common neurological disease with over 100,000 people living with it in Canada. It is a chronic and progressive disease, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. These range from loss of

smell and muscle rigidity to tremor and depression. The obvious symptoms are usually the tip of the iceberg, with many others not apparent to most people. The average age of diagnosis is 62 with 30 per cent diagnosed before the age of 50. By 2031, it is predicted that the number will double and Lanark Leeds and Grenville, with the highest percentage of seniors in Ontario and already underserviced, will face a particular challenge. "While there is no cure for this chronic and progressive neurological disorder, early identification and diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is important so that people can educate themselves about what they can do to help delay the disease," says Pat Evans, local advocate and a person with Parkinson's. "People seem to be diagnosed much later here than they would be in an urban area. The reasons for this are not clear but access to specialists may be one factor. There may also be increased isolation because of distance and worries about being judged or stigmatized may prevent people from talking with their doctor." Dan Linton, 48, a Smiths Falls resident, says that he had had symptoms since he was 38 and that diagnosis was only confirmed when the medication was prescribed. "It took a long time for me to be diagnosed because they weren't expecting a 38-year-old to have Parkinson's. But not everyone with Parkinson's is 60 and has a tremor. That is why we need to continue our efforts to educate the public as well as health professionals about the disease." She will also be missed by her very dear community of friends in Carleton Place, where she had lived in her home for nearly a half century. She had also lived briefly in Toronto and Ottawa. Muriel was born in Port Hope and grew up on a farm west of Elizabethville in Hope Township. Following graduation from Port Hope High School, she became an occupational therapist. She served with the Red Cross in Japan during the Korean War (1950 - 1953) under the direction of the Canadian Army. She was recognized for her service in this capacity. Muriel was a lifelong and active member of the Canadian Legion and participated in the activities of the Carleton Place Legion Branch and where she had many friends. Soon after returning from Japan, wanderlust struck and she travelled to England to live for a while. Her twin sister Marian came to visit her in England and then stayed to live there permanently, while Muriel returned home to Canada. Muriel was an artisan who specialized in stained glass, painting, crafts and was passionate about gardening. The intricate stained glass works that Muriel and Nick built into their home made it beautiful and special. Muriel very much enjoyed Tai Chi and going to the local gym. She was a philanthropist and over the years has faithfully supported many causes, charities and organizations which supported her beliefs. She loved the theatre and was a supporter at both the local level and at the National level in Ottawa. The twin sisters Muriel and Marian were re-united in Carleton Place for their 91st Birthday on August 9th, 2018. The following day, Muriel passed on. According to her wishes, Muriel has been cremated and there is no visitation or service. Muriel valued her privacy and truly believed in her own distinct philosophy of life.
