KEMPTVILLE FILLS THE BUS, RAISES OVER $1,400 FOR HOUSE OF LAZARUS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com

The annual Fill the Bus campaign for House of Lazarus (HOL) has once again collected food and cash donations for local families in need as a new school year approaches. The event saw two school buses stationed outside of local grocers, Jonsson's Independent Grocer and Walmart in Kemptville on Aug. 24. Wubs Transit and Lannin's Buslines provided the buses and drivers for the initiative. Client services manager at HOL, Kim Merkley, was on site at Jonsson's Independent collecting donations. "We've already filled half the bus," she reported, only two hours into the campaign. Many shoppers were well aware of the fundraiser on their way into the store. "We're doing great, collecting lots of food and money to get us through the fall to the

winter months." HOL's success is significantly contingent on fundraisers like the Fill the Bus campaign, as many local families rely on the food bank and services provided to the community through the organization's outreach programs. Merkley manages the HOL food bank and has been with the organization for 16 years. Her helpers were from the Dundas Youth Centre in Winchester. "We support them through different programs, so they give back to us by helping us fundraise," she said. On Aug. 28, a program co-ordinator with HOL, Sandy Casselman, confirmed that a grand total of $703 was donated by generous shoppers on the 24th, which will be matched by Coldwell Banker, bringing the grand total up to $1,406. "Our food bank staff is still in the middle of weighing the food," she said, "but I can tell you that there was a lot."

"Every month, there are hundreds of thousands of adults, seniors and families that are walking a very fine line between just barely surviving and falling into the deepest levels of poverty," noted the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) in its 2017 Hunger Report. This year, Food Banks Canada (FBC) has joined the OAFB to take its weeklong Hunger Awareness campaign and turn it into Hunger Action Month. As part of the CFB and OAFB, both Community Food Share and House of Lazarus will be participating in the September campaign in various ways, including hosting another Hunger Awareness Challenge locally. This year's challenge will run from Monday, Sept. 10, to Friday, Sept. 14. It will follow the same guidelines as last year. Participants, also referred to as Hunger Awareness Champions, will collect a supply of food from the food bank, based on what a single person might receive for a five-day period each month. The champion will then be required to live on nothing but that supply of food for five days with only one exception: they may use $10 of their own money to supplement where needed. "At first glance, it would appear to be easy," Community Food Share administrator Ian McKelvie said. "But, it's not. People underestimate the amount of food a person receives through the food bank. A monthly trip to the food bank will provide food that should last for a week. Food banks are equipped to supplement a food budget, not replace it." Last year, there were 12 participants, including one who went through the process anonymously, following the exact steps an actual food bank client would take. So far, two of last year's participants have signed on to do it again, including Vernon's Kim Sheldrick. "While I will participate for just one week, food banks and soup kitchens are a fact of life for many. You gain real perspective into surroundings when you immerse yourself in how others live. One way to best help people is to understand their issues," she said. To participate in this year's challenge, contact Community Food Share or House of Lazarus (HOL). To learn more, please visit www.houseoflazarus.com/hungerawareness-challenge-2018. "HOL participates in this challenge because awareness around food insecurity is crucial to solving hunger," House of Lazarus executive director Cathy Ashby said. "As a food bank, we do what we can to address the immediate needs of those who are hungry, but if we're going to eliminate hunger, we have to be proactive and do more." Community Food Share and House of Lazarus have joined forces with Cornwall's Agape Centre, South Grenville Food Bank and the Merrickville Food Cupboard, to participate in the Hunger Awareness Challenge. WEST NILE VIRUS CAN BE PREVENTED One of the biggest annoyances of getting outside in the summer is the pesky mosquito. The incessant buzzing followed by the sting and itchy, red welt. They are a seasonal hazard. But with the news that mosquitoes in Perth tested positive for the West Nile Virus, it's important to protect yourself and family against mosquito bites. According to a press release issued by the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit on Aug. 22, they regularly monitor mosquitoes for West Nile Virus, which is spread to people through a bite from the infected insect. As part of annual maintenance, the Town of Perth had vacuumed out its catch basins in June and continue to work with the health unit on further actions. The good thing is, the chance of getting seriously ill from an infected mosquito bite isn't high. The health unit says only about 20 per cent may suffer from flu-like symptoms, which include fever, headache, rash, etc. They usually appear two to 15 days after being infect. Only less than one per cent will see the illness develop into meningitis or encephalitis and it's more likely this will take place in people 50 years or older, those with medical conditions or weakened immune systems. The good news is, there are some simple ways to safeguard yourself and your family from getting bitten at home. The type of mosquitoes most common to this area lay eggs in stagnant water, which can be found in bird baths, flower pots, gutters, wading pools or old tires. Decorative ponds are also a popular spot. It's also recommended that bushes and shrubs be kept trimmed, compost piles turned often and ditches remain free of debris or obstructions. Inside the home, make sure there are no holes in screens of windows, doors or vents, so mosquitoes can't easily gain entry. When enjoying the great outdoors, be sure to wear light coloured clothing to protect yourself. Donning long pants, shirts with long sleeves, shoes and socks during peak mosquito times can help. Protection through mosquito repellent should be applied sparingly. Be sure to use sprays that contain DEET or Icaridin. They should not be used on children under two years of age. Instead, they should be protected through netting, which should also be used when individuals sleep outdoors or in an unscreened space. "Mosquitoes do not travel very far, so those biting you around your property are likely finding suitable conditions in your yard," notes the health unit's website. If you suspect that you might have West Nile Virus, it's important to consult with your doctor. Those who have any questions can also call the health unit's action line toll-free at 1-800-660-5853.

WHO WE ARE

LETTERS & COMMENTARY STINKBUGS UNWELCOME NEW VISITORS DEAR EDITOR: I noticed more butterflies, more squirrels and less bees around the vegetable garden this summer, and a new, alarming visitor, one I have never seen before around here but was introduced to them in central B.C. last year are brown marmorated, or marbled stinkbugs. These are native to South East Asia, mainly China. They were first officially reported in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1998. Since then, they have overrun continental U.S. except for perhaps five states. These are resourceful hitchhikers, stowaways crossing borders inside and outside automobiles, tractor-trailers, freight containers and everything else that moves. In the past decades these little tanks have migrated to Canada, Chile, Bulgaria, Abkhazia, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Greece, Switzerland among other unprepared defenseless countries. Big deal. What's another bug and why is this mention-

able? These little prehistoric looking walking amour shields are a real challenge not just as outdoor agricultural pests, they also doubleup as house invaders that are virtually impossible to get rid of once inside a structure, unlike bedbugs and flees. If thirty thousand fit and enjoy living in a shed, imagine how much they would enjoy a large home with all the hiding spots, crevasses and warmth during the winter. There is a bit of good news here; they prefer upper floors and do not like basements. Most herbivorous pests are specialists; they develop tools and methods to survive off a few foods. The ash borer survives off ash trees, the Douglas-fir beetle chooses Douglas firs. But not our stinkbug. These guys are polyphagous gourmands that run the full gamut, from grapes, all trees, peaches, tulips, tomatoes, (this is where I found one), eggplants, okra, pecans, horseradish, cayenne pepper and jalapenos. Name it, they eat it, up to 250 recorded plants and counting. Stinkbugs define insidiousness and toughness. The

damage they inflict on fruits and vegetables is not readily evident on the surface, but kills from the inside through invisible punctures. They invade grapes from the center and are caught-up in bunches that end up in wine and juices. The wine fermentation kills most of the taste of crushed bugs, however, juices can only handle so many per litre before the nasty taste is obvious. Pesticides, they bath in it with little ill-effects. As for sprayed surfaces of fruits etc. their relatively long legs keep them up off the sprayed pesticides high enough not to bother them much. And too much spray lessens the value of foods for obvious reasons. They eat from the interior of plants where pesticides do not penetrate. All in all, one has to admire these tough, destructive creatures, and wait for their biological nemesis, the imported samurai wasp to keep their numbers in check and hope that the samurai wasp, in turn, does not bring with them unintended surprises.

In 2015, ultra runner Clay Williams asked people struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders to sign his Canadian flag. He promised to carry it the full distance of his 750 km run to Parliament Hill as a symbol that they don't have to carry their burdens alone. Now, having just completed its fourth year, Canal Pursuit has evolved into a relay, with many runners doing their part to raise mental health awareness along the Trent Severn Canal and Rideau Canal. Williams organized the run in memory of his two older brothers who took their own lives, and in honour of his sister, wife, and daughter, who all suffer from mood disorders. The total distance of this year's relay was 785 km, which visited 88 locks and averaged 100 km each day, broken into 10 km segments, although some runners took on more than 10 km each. The run took off from Port Severn in the morning of Aug. 18 and toured to Orillia, Bobcayge-

on, Peterborough, Campbellford, Trenton, Belleville, Kingston, Jones Falls, Newboro, Smiths Falls, Merrickville, Kemptville, Nepean, and Hogs Back, to finish up at Parliament Hill on Aug. 25. The campaign began with a fundraising goal of $10,000, and by the end of it, a grand total of $11,681 was raised through 216 donations. "For four years, that brings us to nearly $47, 000," said Williams during his visit to Smiths Falls on Aug. 24. "The number of registered runners is growing every year." Fifty-four runners participated this year, up from last year's 40. For the first year of Canal Pursuit, Williams ran the entire 750 km journey on his own; about 90 km daily. For the second year, he ran 60 km a day for two weeks straight. "That was much more sustainable," he laughed. You might think of Williams as an experienced lifelong runner, but the reality is that he didn't start until he was 43. "I didn't like feeling winded when I got to the top of a flight of

HEALTH UNIT OFFERS RABIES VACCINATION CLINICS SEPT. 12, 19 Together with partner veterinarians and municipalities, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is offering the community Rabies Vaccination Clinics throughout the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark counties. The clinics will be held on Sept. 12 and 19. To find out locations where clinics will be held, call 1-800-660-5853 or visit the health unit website at healthunit.org/clinicsclasses/rabies-clinic.

The goal of hosting these clinics is to help provide rabies vaccinations to as many cats and dogs as possible. As a pet owner, you are responsible for keeping your pet's vaccination certificate. Your dog or cat must be vaccinated against rabies. It's the law! It is important that pet cats or dogs remain up-todate with their rabies vaccination as they too could be at risk of getting rabies.

By increasing the vaccination coverage in pets we will help to minimize the potential transmission of rabies to humans. In addition, hunters preparing for the hunting season are reminded to get their dogs vaccinated against rabies. While running in the bush, hunting dogs have the potential of interacting with wild life that may have rabies. To help protect some wild animals against rabies, the Ministry of Nat-

ural Resources and Forestry releases bait in certain areas in August. Stay away from wild or stray animals. If you or any member of your family has been bitten, scratched or in contact with a potentially rabid animal, contact your local health unit, health care provider, or go to your local emergency health care department immediately. Rabies is a deadly disease that can be prevented. Help prevent the

spread of rabies by vaccinating your pet dog or cat. For more information about preventing the spread of rabies, call us at 1-800-660-5853 or 613-3455685 and ask for a public health inspector or visit: healthunit.org/clinicsclasses/rabies-clinic/ or connect with LGLHealthUnit on Facebook and Twitter. KEY MAP

The proposed Zoning By-law Amendment affects a portion of a property of approximately 55 ha (135 acres) located in part of Lot 25, Concession 1 on the west side of Roses Bridge Road. The proposed Amendment would re-zone the property from the Agricultural (A) Zone to Agricultural-Exception (A-5) Zone, where the “exception provision prohibits a dwelling on the property. The owner of the subject property has been granted approval to sever the existing farmhouse from the farm as a “surplus dwelling” in order to sell it. As a consequence, the remnant farmland must be re-zoned to the above noted Agricultural-Exception (A-5) Zone in order to prohibit a new dwelling to be constructed on the farmland.

OPINION

DIANA FISHER Column

The turkeys delicately pick at their feed. They strut around the barn calmly and wander outside for fresh air on occasion. They are quite nervous, however. If there are strange noises or new arrivals in the barnyard, they are more likely to stay inside. But there is always one in every bunch, or rafter, of turkeys. One rogue turkey goes wandering every chance he gets. The Farmer keeps finding one bird out of the penned area, wandering the barn. If the door is left open, he is often found poking about outside. I asked my husband how he knows it's the same bird every time. They all look the same to me. "Oh, it's him," he says. "I know his face." We took a week off the farm earlier this month to enjoy a cottage on a lake. The Farmer had to come home every couple of days for real estate business, and to fill the feeders in the chicken and turkey coops. Every day he counted beaks. All was good until the last day of our trip. One bird was missing. Travelin' Tom had busted out of the coop once again. He was sighted hightailing it through the soybean field, leaving a tuft of feathers behind where he had squeezed through the barbed wire fence. The Farmer attempted to follow this trail, but he couldn't find Tom. My husband, intrepid hunter of wild turkeys in springtime, sat out at night with a flashlight in an attempt to blind and nab his own bird. But the turkey wasn't coming out of hiding. One Saturday night, on our

way out to a friend's house for a barbecue, we saw Tom. He was just standing in the bushes at the side of the driveway, watching us go. I think I even saw him wave. "Saw the turkey," I said to my husband, under my breath. I hoped my already hard-ofhearing husband didn't hear me, because we were late for the party and I didn't want his turkey-hunting obsession to ruin our evening. "Huh?" He slammed on the brakes. Just then a bloom of white feathers burst out of the undergrowth and took off down the tractor lane toward the barn. "Oh. Looks like he's headed home anyway." But Tom wasn't quite ready to return. Perhaps our domestic bird had encountered a gang of wild turkeys who had taken him under their wing, so to speak. A band of feathered friends who taught him how to forage for mushrooms, bugs and berries in the forest. They probably showed him the creek that runs alongside our property, with its fascinating collection of crickets, frogs and fish. I don't think he could fly up to roost with his wild friends in the trees but I imagine he gave it a good old college try. His adventurous spirit kept him out of doors for several days and warm nights. When it started to get cooler in the evenings, however, Tom wandered back home. He was spotted in the front yard after Sunday dinner. "Ooh. There's the turkey!" I notified my husband. The bird was standing in the corner of my flower bed, munching on a hosta. Most Sundays we have at least two if not three dogs in attendance, and this week the dogs got to the bird before we did. The turkey mustered every ounce of strength he had to launch himself up into the air and over the stone fence into the bush. My daughter Annie, who had been brought up-todate on the situation, called her trained hunting dog to action.

both dog and humans with his talons. Annie carried the bird back to the barn and made sure the door was barred shut. Quite an amount of gobbling and squawking ensued, as Tom regaled his friends with his tales of excitement and intrigue. I'm going to save Tom for someone special this Thanksgiving. He will be a meal that comes along with its own story to tell over dinner.

Rupert, the aged yellow lab with the bad hip, put on his game face. He bounded like a deer into the bush and after a bit of rustling and a spray of feathers, he emerged with the massive turkey in his jaws. Annie gently collected the bird and praised her dog, who had been careful not to harm the turkey. The bird, for his part, had gone peacefully into the arrest, playing dead. This is a good thing because he could have done quite a bit of harm to

stairs," he said. "That was 2003, and I'm still winded when I go up a flight of stairs, but I recover much faster." Williams recalled a book he read called Endurance Running for Seniors that he read when he was approaching 50, which inspired him. "It was really encouraging. No matter what age you start running, you can improve for ten years. Your rate of improvement is faster than your rate of deterioration. So, it's never too late." Williams says the run was changed to a relay because he wanted to get more people involved, and shorter running segments make the event more accessible for those who aren't used to running long distances. The purpose of Canal Pursuit is to raise awareness, encourage conversation, and raise money for the national Defeat Depression campaign. "We're raising money and we're spreading a message," said Williams. "We're trying to keep conversation going. I'm finding that the more people who hear about things like depression, anxiety, and mood disorders, the more comfortable they will feel talking about it themselves; in their family, or at work, or anywhere." He added that political movement and funding often follows wherever the conversation is. When asked to choose one thing he wants everyone to know about mental health, Williams said, "If you're in a dark place, talk to somebody you trust. Uncork the bottle." His sentiment goes out especially to men. "It doesn't necessarily have to be a therapist or counsellor - talk to someone who has your best interest at heart. It'll take some of the weight off your shoulders, and the other person is definitely going to be thinking about things a little differently than you think about things, and they may be able to help you in ways you never thought of." Next year, Williams is considering taking a break from running and perhaps kayaking along the canal instead. "I figure if I could kayak 50 km a day, that would take two weeks, and that would be a solo effort; I'd camp at the locks." However, he says all of the

This past Sunday featured a corn roast, featuring locally grown corn. The market will host a Harvest Festival on Sept. 23, featuring locally grown fruits and vegetables. You can dress up in your favourite costume for the Halloween-themed final market of the year on Oct. 29. The market's annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Fill in five passports throughout the market season and you will be invited to the annual potluck that day. Finally, the Christmas Market will be held on Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are interested in participating in this Christmas event as a vendor, you can fill out an application online and send it in before Sept. 15 to get a spot.

being set up for Tuesday afternoons between food banks hours. Local residents can make appointments with participating agencies to meet at HOL to gain easier access to information, resources, and services. "We are blessed by amazing community support," Ashby said. "It's through community

donations and partners that we are able to make our Live Twilight Auction a reality each year." House of Lazarus is a food bank and outreach mission located in Mountain, serving hundreds of clients from surrounding communities, including all of Dundas County, Grenville County and South Ottawa.

Last year, 600 people were fed through HOL's food bank, while 2,630 people were provided with food, clothing, furniture, and household goods through its outreach programming. A community-supported venture, House of Lazarus does not rely on government funding. It's through HOL thrift

stores, grants, donations, and fundraisers that its projects and programs happen. For more information on this or other House of Lazarus projects, please visit www.houseoflazarus.com or follow the mission on Facebook. Submitted by House of Lazarus

House of Lazarus is once again inviting the public to join them for their annual Live Twilight Auction, giving participants an opportunity to have fun bidding on unique items, while helping the mission further its goals. This year's auction is set for Friday, Sept. 7 and, once again, Peter Ross Auctions Services Ltd. has graciously donated their time and services. The event will be held at House of Lazarus (2245 Simms St. in Mountain) and will begin with a barbecue chicken dinner at 3 p.m., along with an opportunity to view the auction items. Then, at 5 p.m., the bidding will begin. "HOL (House of Lazarus) staff and volunteers have been preparing for months," HOL executive director Cathy Ashby said. "They've been sorting through donations and setting aside some of the best and most unique items for our annual Live Twilight Auction." Items include: Antique furnishings and collectibles, modern home decor items, camping equipment, paintings and prints, quilts and linens, tools, crossbows, bicycles, NASCAR items, motorcycle jackets, workwear, and more. Tickets for the barbecue chicken dinner are $15 each and can be purchased at House of Lazarus. Members of the Mountain and District Lions Club will be on hand to help with the barbecue. Sponsors for the dinner include both Winchester Foodland and Kemptville's Jonsson's Your Independent Grocer. All proceeds from the event are earmarked for HOL's food bank and outreach programming, including Dinner on the House and the Advocacy Centre. Dinner on the House is a free weekly meal for the entire community, which takes place on Thursday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church on Simms Street in Mountain. The program was designed to encourage community togetherness. One of our newest projects is our advocacy centre, which is

Smiths Falls Police Services Board In our busy lives, seems there’s so much to do. Our minds often race, and our vehicles too. Consumed with ‘whatever’ is coming up next; the meeting, the deadline or incoming text. But sharing our roads, on their very own journeys, are students embarking on a voyage of learning. Each of them precious, with dreams yet untold. And each one deserving, of care on the road. So as we travel life’s roads, though our minds may deride us, let us be mindful of those, who journey beside us.

RIDING WITH GRAMPA WAS ALWAYS A BUMPY RIDE EARL LEARNED A RUMBLE SEAT LESSON ON NORTHCOTE ROAD, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

It wasn't the first time we lost my brother Earl out of the rumble seat of Grampa's car. The first time, it was Emerson's fault. Wrestling in the rumble seat for the best position, much bigger than Earl, Emerson gave him a mighty push, and like a loon diving into a lake, Earl went sailing into the ditch on the Northcote Side Road. But this time, it was Earl's fault, plain and simple. Every time Grampa came from Ottawa, we five kids had to have a ride in his rumble seat car. My sister Audrey and I were content to sit in the front with Grampa, listening to his tales of Ottawa where he lawn-bowled, played golf and ate at Bowles Lunch. The day that Earl took the second dive was entirely his fault. The three brothers

had climbed into the back, and Earl decided he would sit on the outside of the seat, with his back against the window that separated the rumble seat from the front of the car. Audrey kept rapping on the window, making mad gestures at Earl, trying to get him to sit down in the hole, but of course, he couldn't see her with his back to the glass. The Northcote Road was full of holes and ruts, which should have slowed down Grampa, but he seemed to get special delight in hitting every one of them, as we bounced along at a good clip. We tore past Briscoe's General Store like a bolt of lightning, my teeth chattering from the rough ride with my eyes glued to the road. It was Audrey who saw the whole performance in the rumble seat, and she almost caused Grampa to leave the road when she grabbed his arm and told him to stop the car, we had lost Earl. Grampa never eased the gas a fraction, and simply said, "We'll pick him up on the way back." I started to cry, wondering if Earl was laying dead in the ditch, or at the very least had broken his legs ... both of them. But Grampa didn't seem to be the least concerned. I turned in the seat, and there were Emerson and Everett, as calm as you please,

as if we lost a sibling every day while driving in Grampa's rumble seat car. Their hair was flaying all over their faces, and they were grinning like they had just been given a dollar. They didn't seem to have a care in the world.

Halfway to Briscoe's General Store, there was Earl standing on the side of the road waving frantically with one of his running shoes in his hand.

- Mary Cook

Just before we came to that part of the Northcote Side Road, before the last long stretch into Renfrew, where we left the gravel, and the road turned into cement, Grampa, looking neither left nor right to see if any other cars were coming, pulled a U-turn and headed back home. Halfway to Briscoe's General Store, there was Earl standing on the side of the

road waving frantically with one of his running shoes in his hand. Grampa ground to a halt, Earl climbed into the back and slid right down into the very depths of the hole. It looked like he wasn't going to take any more chances of diving into the ditch. Mother didn't even ask Earl how he got a scraped knee. She was more interested in the green grass stain on his good Sunday shirt. She did get out the iodine and dabbed the cut and ordered him to go upstairs and change his clothes. Earl limped around a bit, but didn't seem to have any injuries other than the skinned knee. He did say though, the iodine hurt a lot more than the scrape he got when he nosedived into the ditch out of Grampa's rumble seat car along the Northcote Side Road. In May, Ber Levtov was honoured with the Best New Business of the Year award at the 2018 North Grenville Breakfast Banquet, as the clinic was recognized for providing much-needed services in the community such as children's mental health and addictions services. The clinic has also recently acquired a new associate, Andrea Empey, who has a background in traditional Chinese medicine and provides cupping therapy. "Stress is a whole-body experience; a whole person experience," said Ber Levtov, "so (Empey) can support clients who want to work that way with their stress and trauma recovery. Everyone responds to stress differently and there are many strategies to feel better, so that's why we offer a variety of services to help deal with it." Empey is the sixth professional operating out of the clinic, joining Ber Levtov and her team: Tricya Morrice, a therapeutic yoga teacher who also practices Thai massage; counsellor Meagan Cumming, who accompanies those on their journey of recovery from trauma, including childhood abuse and/or neglect, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence; holistic psychiatrist Elspeth MacEwan, whose area of practice explores death and dying, palliative care, and grief; and Kimberlee Dharsan Kaur, the clinic's certified youth and addictions counsellor. With more practitioners coming, Ber Levtov says she will be looking at moving the clinic to a bigger space during the second half of 2019. Ber Levtov offers client services as a psychotherapist, working with business women and busy women to transform the way they react to and manage their stress, granting them more control in how it affects their day-to-day lives. "Who I work with, as it turns out, is who I love to work with and it's who comes in the door most," she said. "There are so

many busy women in this community." Ber Levtov sees a variety of women from entrepreneurs to working mothers. "Even if there's nothing bad happening in their life, being busy and having to multitask so many things is very demanding," she said, "so these people need to have support." She also works with men. "If they feel like mine is an approach that's right for them, I'm happy to welcome guys in the door." Recently, Ber Levtov completed the Starter Company Plus program, offered through the Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC) in Brockville, and was successful in receiving a $2,500 grant. "As part of that program, we had to do a business plan and a two-year cash flow forecast. That has really informed how I'm going to do business next year in terms of where I want the clinic to go," she said. Ber Levtov will use the grant toward marketing, the development of a new website, and an improved point of sale system in order to accept all forms of payment. This fall, Compassionate Support for Stressful Times will be offering a yoga-based stress resilience program that will span over six weeks. "The program will utilize all the tools of yoga; not just physical forms, but also breathing, and philosophy and spirituality," said Ber Levtov. The program will provide participants with the knowledge and tools necessary for stress management and take place in a group setting, which Ber Levtov says makes it even more effective. "It's so powerful to have a group of people in the room talking about stress, because everybody recognizes it, and it feels so good to know that there are other people who understand what you're going through." Registration will open toward the end of September. For more information, visit www.Shula.ca.

PETER PAN JUNIOR BRINGS THE MAGIC IN KEMPTVILLE

The Kemptville Advance | Thursday, August 30, 2018 |

Desmond Devoy/Metroland You can fly. There was no doubt about it, as fairies and pixie dust, Lost Boys and Indigenous bands, Captain Hook's pirates, Peter Pan and the Darling children filled the Urbandale Arts Centre in Kemptville on Sunday, Aug. 26. The afternoon performance was the culmination of weeks of hard work for the Kemptville Youth Musical Theatre Company Summer Camp's production of Disney's Peter Pan Junior. Above, the pirates raise their mops in unison during the song “Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life For Me).” Right, Michael (Logan Lowry) embarks on make-believe swordplay with brother John (Chris Landry). Below right, Peter Pan (Grace Dinsmore) shows Wendy (Hudson Dojcak) how to fly. Bottom right, the crocodile proved to be a big hit with the audience.

Registration is on now and volunteers are also being sought to assist during the event. Pictured, runners get set to participate in last year's glow-in-the-dark run.

Welcome back to another exciting school year! The roads will soon be abuzz with school buses and the streets and sidewalks alive with students traveling to and from school. At STEO, student safety always comes first. We are asking motorists to be extra mindful of buses and of student pedestrians and to keep in mind the following safety tips on the road. Safe travels! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____

✓ Plan: Your commute to work may take a bit longer than it did during the summer months. Allow for extra time on the road to reduce rushed, careless and frustrated driving.

Your patience and understandin understanding on the road helps to ensure that our tiniest travelers arrive safely at their destinations.

One of Kemptville's biggest events is celebrating its fifth year. The Neon Night Fun Run is less than a month away and the volunteer committee is planning to once again create a massive glow-in-the-dark event for all the moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grammas, papas, kids and babies in the area to help fight childhood cancer. This 2K and 5K non-competitive fun run takes place from Riverside Park in Kemptville on Saturday Sept. 22. Registration and the pre-party starts at 5:30 p.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. The registration fee is $40 in advance - $50 event day and $10 for children aged 15 years and under. You can also register as a family for $90 which includes two adults and up to three children. Register by Sept. 1 to guarantee your free T-shirt size. Join as an individual or as part of a team. This year, the committee has additional events planned including sumo wrestling at the Kemptville Physiotherapy Centre tent. There will be Star Wars characters, superheroes, glow face painting, puppeteers and a whole lot more fun for the whole family. And one of the most anticipated events of the night, you will witness our Childhood Warriors being knighted by Olympians and our Olympian hopefuls. You can find more information and/ or register for the event by visiting cancer.ca/neonnightkemptville. Last year, more than 850 people came decked out in neon and helped raise over $85,000. Thanks to fundraisers such as this event, the Canadian Cancer Society invests more in childhood cancer research than any other national charity. Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related deaths in children under the age of 15. Between 2009 and 2013 more than 4,700 new cases of cancer in children 0-14 years old were reported in Canada. However, due to childhood cancer research cancer death rates have dropped from 40 per million children in 1985 to 20 per million in 2009. The Canadian Cancer Society is working to create a world where no Canadian fears cancer. They support high-quality

OPINION

FERRIES ENJOYABLE PART OF THE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE JEFF MAGUIRE WOULD RATHER TAKE A FERRY THAN A BRIDGE JEFF MAGUIRE Column

Ferries have always fascinated me! To be truthful any vessel that carries cargo across wide bodies of water is of interest to me. But ferries are different than ships or barges. Ferries specialize in moving human cargo, most often with owners' vehicles or bicycles stowed safely below. Ferries are also big commercial carriers taking vans, cargo trucks, tractor trailers and buses from

point A. to point B. and often trimming conventional road trips considerably in the process. Recently Kathleen and I embarked on our latest ferry trip. Well, it was very short so perhaps I should call it a "ride" rather than a trip. We were on our way to visit our good friends Frank and Wendy LeBlanc at their new home in Picton. For those unfamiliar with the Lake Ontario community it is located in Prince Edward County (PEC) an area which, in recent years in particular, has become a magnet for

tourists. If you look at a map you will see that PEC is, in effect, an island. A wide swath of land connected to the rest of Ontario by bridges and yes, by the Glenora Ferry. We had a choice of routes - several in fact - but we deliberately headed for tiny Glenora just so we could enjoy the experience of another run on that particular vessel. What makes the Glenora Ferry unique is that it is part of the provincial highway system. Follow Highway 33, better known in the region as the 'Loyalist Parkway', southwest from Kingston and you will pass through small centres such as Bath and Adolphustown. The highway ends at

the Adolphus Reach, an inlet from Lake Ontario. That's where the ferry takes over. The free, yearround service, operated by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), moves vehicles of all sizes and their passengers across the narrow strait to Glenora. From there it's a short nine kilometre hop into Picton. The Glenora Ferry is not unique in Ontario. There are other services operated by MTO including one from Kingston to Wolfe Island and another from either Leamington or Kingsville to Pelee Island in Lake Erie. I have travelled on both those ferries over the years. Certainly the short run

FLYERS

to and from Glenora is picturesque. You have just enough time to get out of your vehicle and take in the spectacular views including the huge bluff that rises to Lake on the Mountain near Picton! Three days later we made the reverse trip on the way home. I never miss the opportunity to ride on a ferry. I will go out of my way to enjoy another ferry excursion. Kathy has largely overcome a childhood fear of ferries resulting from a stormy excursion to Walpole Island in the St. Clair River. Now there is yet another good Ontario ferry trip, from Walpole to Algonac, Michigan. Kathy and I have made the crossing many times since her childhood adventure and highly recommend it. There are other ferry crossings to

Michigan from Ontario along the picturesque St. Clair River as well. Closer to home, along the Ottawa River, ferries transport vehicles between Ontario and Quebec. The locally famous Quyon Ferry is a good example which I also recommend. It runs from Fitzroy Harbour in rural west Ottawa to the Quebec village of the same name. We've taken ferry trips for decades on our travels. I can't recall one that I didn't enjoy. I'll take a ferry instead of a bridge any time! Dawson Hi, I am Dawson. I was brought to Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) on a cold day in March. I have a lot of love to give but just need a patient partner. I might need some extra encouragement, and treats will help, I can assure you of that. Underneath my handsome, bashful exterior is a reservoir of love and wisdom. If you are patient enough to tap into it, I want nothing more than to show my affection. I might need a quiet home and a little more understanding, but I promise, once I feel safe I'll be loyal to you all of my days. Will you take a chance on me? Please meet me at LAWS. You'll won't regret it!

Plumpkin Hi, I am Plumpkin and they think I am about six years old. I was found as a stray cat, and so far no one came looking for me! I'm a voluptuous beauty ready for my forever home! I am super quiet and rarely meow unless I want a person to notice me. I'd be very happy to share a quiet home with someone who can offer me a daily brush which I enjoy especially if you allow me to rub my face against the bristles too. I would benefit from some playtime and have no access to food all the time. A reward after playtime would be great too, it doesn't have to be food. Food is not love they said. I am happy to lounge the days away and would love to sit next to you to watch TV. Would you please give me a chance? I am available at Pet Valu in Almonte and can't wait to meet my new forever family.

Ulyss Meet Ulyss, who arrived in April. His transformation since his arrival has been remarkable. He's is very comfortable with all his cat buddies and enjoys human touch. Although he's not a lap cat and can be a little shy at times, we are confident that, with the right owner, he will continue to feel more at ease and will make a good pet. Please meet this black beauty, with his sleek, shiny fur and amazing green eyes, at LAWS.

LAWS photos

Meeting Harmony is going to be a pleasure, as she's a friendly, about two-year-old female cat with great personality. Harmony arrived very thin and with a patchy fur. She's working on looking pretty again, with our help. Your reward will be to see her to continue to blossom once you take her into your heart and home. Please meet Harmony at LAWS -- she's worth the trip! Follow us at www.facebook.com/lanarkanimals and/ or lanarkanimals.ca. LAWS is located at 253 Glenview Rd., Smiths Falls.

SUDOKU

horoscopes ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 If you want to get out and see the sights, you have to plan an excursion, Aries. Start planning a vacation and don’t forget to invite a pal along for the trip.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, indecisiveness may cost you in the days ahead. Try to come to a decision on an important situation so you can begin moving forward once again.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Do not be quick to accept the word “no,” Taurus. If you are seeking a promotion, it may take another round of negotiations to sell your position to a supervisor.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Sometimes you don’t see the purpose behind certain actions, Scorpio. Don’t hesitate to ask questions to clear things up. Forge ahead and things will become clearer.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, some things are at play and you may need to gather some facts. Don’t try to piece things together, but rather start at the beginning and get a comprehensive view.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sooner or later, if you try different things you are bound to stumble on the right course of action, Sagittarius. It just may take longer than you initially expected.

insideottawavalley.com

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 You have to hunker down and work through tasks that hold little interest for you, Cancer. Success comes from tending to all of the details, even those that are less interesting.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

This Special Feature will be published in Full Colour on Thursday, September 6th, 2018

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Don’t worry if you cannot get your act together just yet, Capricorn. You will find your groove soon enough and everything will ultimately fall in place.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Plenty of opportunities to make big changes are on the horizon, Leo. You need to figure out what it is you want to do with yourself and where to make change.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Some things can’t be avoided forever, Aquarius. If you feel like you are running away from problems or things you don’t like, you may need to confront them.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, sit quietly aside and let others talk while you listen. Listening can be a great way to learn about others as well as yourself. Use this time wisely.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Funny things happen when you least expect them, Pisces. Just when you may have thought a situation was dire, some fun will change your opinion. 0830
