PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Once again, the North Grenville community has shown an outpouring of support for a local family during a time of hardship. North Grenville resident, 39year-old Ryan Forbes, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 appendiceal cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis; a very rare cancer with a poor prognosis, and a condition in which multiple carcinomas develop simultaneously. Forbes has been undergoing chemotherapy at Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre, and began his third round on Aug. 31. Since a GoFundMe page was launched on behalf of the family in July, more than $48,000 has been raised through 395 donations, surpassing their original fundraising goal of $30,000. "Not only is Ryan an amazing

father, and husband, he is loyal to his friends and family and always has a smile on his face," is stated on the Go Fund Me page. "His outgoing personality and positive attitude is infectious." Local businesses such as Canadian Tire and Richardson's Hair Design have raised funds to support Forbes through his battle. A social media campaign for the cause, #DieselsArmy, has also taken off. "Diesel" was a nickname that Forbes earned during his employment at Tallman Truck Centre when he was younger. Another initiative that's been organized in support of Forbes is the Benefit Concert in the Park, featuring Ambush, set for Sunday, Sept. 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. at South Gower Park. COMMUNITY BIDS FAREWELL TO CONST. CATHY LINDSEY AFTER 30 YEARS, COMMUNITY SAFETY OFFICER IS HANGING UP UNIFORM PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com North Grenville's community safety officer is preparing for her retirement after 30 years. Const. Cathy Lindsey has served as a Grenville County OPP officer for 30 years, enriching the community in her role as community safety officer since 2000, and delivering inschool programming to local youth. Her last day at the Kemptville OPP detachment is Sept. 10. Her career as a police officer began in October of 1988. "It was all polyester," Lindsey recalled of the re-
tro police uniforms. "We wore pea coats and all the girls had to wear these little hats." She was the fifth female police officer at the Morrisburg detachment. "Women weren't hired until 1975 in the OPP," she said. "It's still kind of hard to believe that." Lindsey started thinking about career policing around the time that she was in sixth grade. Back then, she says it probably wouldn't have been possible for her to be an officer if she had been of age, because of her gender. When she did start the job, it was still considered a novelty to be a female police officer. "There was another female police officer there at the time, and if we were ever together, people in the community would think that was an oddity," she
said. "They'd ask where the male officers were, and if we were allowed to drive in a cruiser by ourselves. Now, you wouldn't even think of asking those questions, so we've certainly come a long way." During the early years of her career, Lindsey says she realized how privileged she was to have had a good upbringing. "I think it was an eye opener, and at times it was difficult, to see that there were people living with real hardships and they were still able to make it work. I think that was the biggest adjustment." Lindsey grew up in the suburbs in Brampton, back when it was still called Bramalea. She graduated from the University of Ottawa in April 1988 after completing a double major in criminology and sociology, just months before she came onto the job in October.

Following her first sexual assault investigation dealing with a young female, Lindsey became interested in criminal investigations. "I was very fortunate that I worked in the crime unit for five years early on in my career," she said. She worked as a detective from 1993-1998. "Some of the highlights of my career re-
ally happened there." After this, the Ottawa City Police took over, and Lindsey had to decide whether she would transfer out or stay in the city. "I was lucky that I got my first choice of location to transfer out to, which was Kemptville." At first, Lindsey was a general patrol officer, but was quick to take on the op-
portunity to be a community service officer when it came up in 2000; her current role that she has held on to for 18 years. It has since had a brief name change to community safety officer. This is the position that brought Lindsey to perhaps her most recognized See LINDSEY, page 7

FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS BRING WOMEN'S SELF-DEFENCE TRAINING TO KEMPTVILLE PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A collaboration between two local businesses is set to empower participating women in the area of self-defence. Rebecca Cronk of Get Cronk'd Fitness Studio and Shulamit Ber Levtov of Compassionate Support for Stressful Times are bringing a Krav Maga course to Kemptville. The 12-week program will be held at Get Cronk'd from Sept. 22 to Dec. 15., with sessions taking place every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Krav Maga is widely regarded as the best self-defence system in the world, developed for the Israel Defense Forces and Israeli security forces. The fighting technique is derived from a combination of fighting styles including boxing, wrestling, karate, and judo. The fighting system is also known for its focus on real-world situations and its efficiency. This is what makes Krav Maga the ide-
al self-defence training for modern-day women. Cronk says the training would have built up her confidence as a University student when she often had to take long walks home at 3 a.m. from the nearest bus stop. "How cool would it be if we could prepare women in this area for the 'What if ?'" she said. Cronk will be offering up her fitness studio to host the hour and-a-half-long weekly sessions. The recommendation to bring the training to town came from Meagan Cumming, a counsellor at Compassionate Support for Stressful Times, who learned from a first-hand experience what the course is like when she took it in Ottawa last year. "I took this course in the spring and Laurent is a fabulous instructor," said Cumming. "He created an environment that was safe and empowering, and offered psychoeducation pieces around how the body responds to trauma. I highly recommend it."
Mougeot is an international expert in Krav Maga, and offers the self-defence training to women and children at a studio in Ottawa, where he leads a team of instructors. Cumming will be volunteering her time to provide group therapy for participants midway and at the completion of the program to allow participants a space to debrief. While Mougeot focuses on the physical training of Krav Maga, Ber Levtov will be educating participants on the psychological aspects of self-defence. "I will be talking about how to recognize predators, because as women, we're taught to be nice and polite," she said. "We're bringing this course here because we want to empower women; not just with the physical skills, but also with the mental game." Ber Levtov explained that often, when a woman responds to a predator, she looks away or tries to avoid them, but that kind of response really makes the woman

"Eye contact and a confident body stance sends a different message," she said, "but if the eye contact lasts just a little too long, we're in the danger zone in the other direction," she said. A maximum of 20 people can

House of Lazarus (HOL) Food Bank received $5,170 from 100 Men Who Care North Grenville. Group representatives Chris Cathcart and Graeme Allan visited the Mountain-based facility Wednesday, Aug. 29 to deliver the donation. "We are grateful to the many North Grenville men who contributed to make this donation possible," HOL executive director Cathy Ashby said. "Without the generosity of our surrounding communities, we wouldn't be able to do the many things we do." The money is earmarked for HOL's Handyman Heroes project, whereby materials are purchased to help improve the living environment of families in need. While HOL provides materials, it is through the generosity of contractors who donate their me to make these improvements that the program is possible. Any local contractors interested in getting involved should contact Ashby directly by email (cashby@houseoflazarus.com) or phone (613-989-3830). "Our Handyman Heroes project was born when members of the community came forward to volunteer their me and services," Ashby said. "At this point, we've had a contractor go into the home of a single mom to help improve the family's living conditions, as well as a mechanic who has done free labour to make another at-risk family's transportation safe again." House of Lazarus is a food bank and outreach mission located in Mountain, serving hundreds of clients from surrounding communities, including all of Dundas County, Grenville County and South Ottawa. Last year, 600 people were fed through HOL's food bank, while 2,630 people were provided with food, clothing, furniture, and household goods through its outreach programming. A community-supported venture, House of Lazarus does not rely on government funding. It's through HOL thrift stores, grants, donations, and fundraisers that its projects and programs happen. For more information on this or other House of Lazarus projects, please visit www.houseoflazarus.com or follow the mission on Facebook.

Lindsey added that residents of North Grenville are very lucky to live in such a special community. "We're really blessed, because I think it's unlike a lot of small towns where they welcome everybody, and regardless of what's going on and what charity is in need, it's shocking how generous this community is. It's amazing, and that doesn't happen in all communities, so I think we're really lucky."

environment in the community - local schools - where she is known for delivering important programming to children and youth on topics such as anti-bullying and drug abuse. Lindsey was also instrumental in developing partnerships between local schools with the OPP and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit in order to effectively deliver the programming with both legal and healthrelated perspectives. In the past five years, Lindsey has worked with health unit educator Rebecca Shams to deliver classes on the risks of tobacco, e-cigarettes, and marijuana. "We're certainly seeing an increase in cigarette usage with our young people, and then obviously with the upcoming legalization of marijuana, it's definitely something that we need to educate our young people about," she said. One local "kid" who Lindsey watched grow during her career is Mattison Nicholls, St. Michael Catholic High School alumnus and now, an OPP officer himself. "I would've taught Mattison in grade six," said Lindsey. "He was actually in teaching at Carleton University and he thought that policing might be for him, because there isn't a lot of teaching jobs right now. Sandy (Mattison's mother) had asked if I would allow him to come and see us, and I said absolutely." Lindsey gave Nicholls a tour of the OPP station and says she knew right away that he was the right man for the job. "He's one of those people - I knew instantly that he was going to be an awesome police officer," she said. "We really developed a friendship after that; we did mock interviews, I went over resumes with him, and I basically was his little cheerleader on the sidelines. I'm very proud of him. I always knew he would make it." Nicholls remembers his mentorship from Lindsey fondly. "She offered to give me a walk-through of the OPP station in Kemptville and the rest is history," he said. "I remember everything from that day; she showed me the cell block, the garage, the cruisers, and introduced me to detectives and a few undercover guys in a street-crime unit. I left that day completely convinced I wanted to be a cop." After this experience, Nicholls changed his degree and spent the next year preparing himself for a policing career. "Const. Lindsey helped in preparing my application and ran me through a number of mock interviews before I officially applied," he said. "After graduating from school, I applied to a number of places and ultimately got hired with the Ottawa Police Service." Nicholls currently lives and works in Ottawa and couldn't imagine doing anything else. "I owe a large part of where I am right now to Const. Lindsey. I wish her the best going into retirement - she'll be missed." A number of staff members at local schools have also shared their gratitude of Lindsey's contributions to their school communities, including Matt Hubbard, vice principal at Kemptville's Holy Cross Catholic School. "Constable Lindsey has been a wonderful part of our Holy Cross Catholic School community," he said. "She provided proactive, responsive and restorative supports for many students and families. We truly appreciate her guidance and wish her the best on her retirement. She will be greatly missed." Lindsey's plans for her retirement include travel, reading and relaxing, but she won't be disappearing from the community for long. "I'm still going to be involved in the community - that's a guarantee," she said. She plans on doing volunteer work, but hasn't decided where yet. Lindsey said the best part of her job has been the connections she's made with people in the community. "When you're on patrol, you're typically seeing people at their worst, because they call us when they need help," she explained. "So, I think the best part of my job was to see some people at their best. I think that's probably what I'll take away

DON'T LET SEX-ED HIJACK SCHOOL DEBATE School's back, with at least some relief from the uncertainty whirling about the health and physical education curriculum. But by turning back the clock, the new provincial government is in danger of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. In a news release in late August, the government spelled out its plans for a provincewide consultation with parents in advance of implementing a new back-to-the-basics curriculum. There are both positives and negatives in the announcement co-made by Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Lisa Thompson. It's positive the government made its intentions known before the new school year began, and some of the aspects of the curriculum review are well deserving of scrutiny and debate. It's never a bad idea to consult parents (and the rest of the citizenry), but it has to be an inclusive process that guards against being hijacked by a vocal minority. It's positive that town halls are being held right across the province, but exactly what 'telephone town halls' are and how effective they will be remains to be seen. Regarding the list of topics on the government's consult list, there isn't much argument over whether or not the curriculum should be reviewed to determine if Ontario's schools are doing enough to prepare students with needed job skills. Not every student is suited to go to university. More emphasis and stature should be put on learning skilled trades and new technologies. Most people surely agree that the curriculum could do more to educate students in important life skills such as financial literacy. And the question whether to ban cellphone use in the classroom is certainly worth debating. Discussing how to improve student performance in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics makes sense, especially considering the latest results of the standardized testing released last week. In anticipation of changes, the government is making changes to the math curriculum, but the focus on "traditional formulas and memorization techniques" appears vague enough not to complicate things for teachers. Unfortunately that's not the case with the health and physical education curriculum. In a knee-jerk reaction to a few strident sex-ed objectors, teachers are being forced to revert to an out-of-date curriculum from the 1990s. The strides made in including such important topics as mental health, bullying, cyberstalking, sexting and the soon-to-be legalization of pot in the curriculum are being relegated to the back burner because of misguided concerns that discussing gender identity or making babies will scar our children. The school curriculum could do with a review. But people and the government shouldn't allow themselves to be sidetracked into focusing on the sex-ed issue. Despite attracting so much attention, it's only a small part of the equation. In fact it's not even the most important part of the health and physical education curriculum. Fill in the consultation surveys, attend the town halls and make detailed presentations if so inclined, but don't let apathy give the government an excuse to set a systemwide curriculum only a small group embraces.

WHO WE ARE
BACK TO SCHOOL PICS ARE ALWAYS A HIT NEWSPAPER ROLE IN SCHOOLS IS CHANGING, WRITES LAURIE WEIR LAURIE WEIR Column
Hey parents, grandparents, guardians, it is backto-school time. I can't wait for my social media feeds to be inundated with photos of young people doing great things in our communities. As such, I'm putting a call out to all you awesome photographers to send us your best shots. That way, we won't be pestering students and staff at the school, looking as lost or out of place as those kinders or Grade 7/9 kids. In years past, we in the
newsroom have been tasked with back-to-school assignments. There is a lot more to it these days. We need five levels of approvals (a little exaggeration, but not much), as they also go on the World Wide Web. Children's safety is paramount for all involved here so we are always mindful of getting proper approval before the photos get printed in the newspaper. We understand that you may not want your child's photo to appear in print or on line. As our industry has developed in recent years, we can't just put something in the paper these days without it also being on our websites and social pages. This is why we will be leaving a lot of school events' coverage up to the school boards communication departments, whose
personnel are inside your schools more regularly than we are, and are a lot more familiar with who can and can't be photographed. Your school board communication departments are doing bang-up jobs covering important events and milestones and they always share those stories and photos with the newspaper. We are appreciative to them for that. So as we head back to school, don't forget to snap a photo of your child as they wait for the bus, hug their dog, or display their new backpack - we'll save some space in a print edition, as long as we know they are good to be published. We will, of course, still be on hand to cover major events or profile key milestones and achievements. And we will always be wary of your children's safety when it comes to newspaper coverage. Just like any other third Sunday in September for the past 25 plus years in North Grenville, the Terry Fox Run will take place in our community. However, this year's run will come with one change, a change in location. On Sunday, Sept. 16, the Kemptville Terry Fox Run will take place on the Ferguson Forest trails. With the run beginning and ending on the St. Michael Catholic High School track (behind the school). Just as in past years a 2K, 5K and 10K run will be offered to the community, with the 2K run/walk taking place on the newly completed multi-use pathway alongside County Road 44. The 5K and 10K runs will each take place on the trails. As the 2K route is on a paved path, participants are welcome to walk with strollers, run, bike, and/or rollerblade. The 5K and 10K will be
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Kemptville's Terry Fox Run will have a new location this year - the Ferguson Forest Centre trails when it takes place Sunday, Sept. 16. Pictured, participants set out during last year's run, which took off from Riverside Park. for running, walking and biking only. Once again, dogs are welcome to accompany their owners, provided they are on an appropriate leash. The move has been
made in an attempt to keep our participants off of the busy down town roads. Over the recent years, as the community has grown, so too has the traffic. The new route allows us to
make use of the beautiful trails that have been around the community for
a number of years, as well as provides our 2K runners with a safe and accessible walkway and crosswalk along and across County Road 44, where they can be seen and cheered on by the passing public. The trails provide our 5K and 10K participants with a safe route from start to finish, where they will not have to worry about traffic at intersections. As in past years, all courses will be clearly marked to assist runners. Terry's dream: In 1980 Terry began his run in St. John's, Newfoundland, running for 143 days until he was forced to halt his run in Thunder Bay, Ontario, due to the cancer returning in his lungs. Terry started the Marathon of Hope with the idea of heightening awareness of the disease and raising
$1 million. As the run continued, his goal changed from raising $1 million to raising $1 per each Canadian. Today Terry's run supports more than 1,152 different cancer research projects. Pledge forms can be picked up at the North Grenville Municipal Centre arena, Back in Motion Therapeutic Massage, B&H Your Community Grocer or Douvris Martial Art Kemptville. Participants can also register online at www.terryfox.org. The run will begin and 10 a.m. with registration on the track beginning at 9 a.m. "It's got to keep going without me." - Terry Fox

WHAT'S IN YOUR SPOUSAL ACCOUNT? THE ACCIDENTAL FARMWIFE SHARES HER ADVICE FOR A HAPPY MARRIAGE DIANA FISHER Column
speak an unkind word." That is profound. And it might be difficult for some people but, as I said earlier, I am lucky. The Farmer is pretty easygoing and easy to live with. Of course, he didn't say "never mutter an unkind word under your breath, so quietly that the other person can't hear you." That may have been done once or twice. I'm only human. And my final piece of advice is to think of marriage like a bank account. You will make deposits into your account whenever you do something thoughtful, caring and loving for your spouse. Those deposits will sit there in your spousal account, waiting for that inevitable day when you totally screw up. We all make mistakes and unintentionally hurt, annoy or frustrate our partners. That is when it comes in handy to have a healthy balance in your spousal account. It will be difficult for your sweetheart to be mad at you for long if you are usually a great partner who carries their own weight, shows consideration, appreciation and interest, and puts their spouse before themselves. Of course, it's totally within the rule book to remind your partner of the balance in your account. In fact, you might have to, depending on how badly you messed up. Here's to the next generation of newlyweds. Good luck to you all. Diana Leeson Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. This has been a season of marriage. I've been to bridal showers and a bachelorette and we've hosted a wedding. More than once at these gatherings I was presented with a small square of colourful paper and asked to write my Advice for a Happy Marriage on it. In 300 words or less. That is a tall order. The Farmer and I just marked 11 years together. This marriage is easy. I know we are lucky - but we are also experienced. The luck part is that we don't have too many conflicting views about how to run this thing. We agree that we each need our time to ourselves, to pursue our own interests, and we should be supporting each other in those pursuits. We agreed on that from the beginning. The Farmer warned me, I guess, from that first date, that hunting and fishing and watching war documentaries are just some of his favourite things. Hunting season at our house is like playoff season to the sports fan. And the war documentaries? They are just a constant. The television is always broadcasting some grainy black-andwhite footage of soldiers or airmen in combat. I actually have a theory about that. I think it's quite possible that the Farmer is drawn to war documentaries as a form of past-life regression. That's the only way I can explain his fascination with fighter pilots and infantry. I know his father trained on a fighter jet but
the war ended before his training was complete - so I don't think he is the inspiration behind this particular obsession. I think the Farmer was a fighter pilot in the Second World War. He likely came to a dramatic end, and he is back here now feeling some kind of spiritual connection to what he sees in those documentaries. Like a cellular memory. The Farmer knows that, although he also loves a good crime documentary, I can't handle the gory bits. Courtroom photos of body parts and blood give me bad dreams and night terrors. The same goes for the nasty things that are displayed on TV as part of life and death in the animal kingdom. I don't need to see a lion taking down a gazelle, thank you very much. My husband knows to change the channel when I walk into the room. And part of a successful marriage is the give and take of the television remote. So back to the marriage advice. When asked, I usually write down my favourite bid of advice, which was given to me by a grand old church lady when I was a young wife (the first time), in 1987. She said, "My piece of advice to you is not 'never go to bed angry' but rather 'if you must fight, fight naked.'" It's funny how I can't remember much from that time but those words have stuck with me! My second favourite piece of advice was given to me by the Farmer himself. I think he included it in his wedding vows, which he wrote with equal measure of humour and sincerity. He said, "I promise to never

COMMUNITY
NORTH GRENVILLE DECLARES SEPTEMBER AS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com On Sept. 1, North Grenville Mayor David Gordon and Deputy Mayor Barb Tobin, accompanied by Neon Night Fun Run/Walk committee members, local families and supporters, proclaimed September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by raising the Childhood Cancer Awareness flag in front of the North Grenville Community Centre. "Two words that don't go together are 'cancer' and 'children,'"said Gordon. "It's a travesty. We have to fight it." He reminded the crowd that September is an important month for everybody that has children. "Get out and support it with all your heart," he concluded. Brenda Burich, co-chair of the annual Neon Night for childhood cancer research, said a few words about how childhood can-
cer has affected her life. "I'm here on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, co-chair of the Neon Night Fun Run, and as a bereaved mum," she said, holding back tears. "I lost my son 22 years ago. I'd like to thank the mayor and council for agreeing to proclaim September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month." In her speech, Burich reported that there are approximately 10,000 children with cancer in Canada right now, and that every year, about 1,500 children are diagnosed. "Because of research, today about 85 per cent of kids with the most common types of cancer will go on to lead healthy and productive lives," she said. "However, not all forms of cancer are understood. Research is there as the key to discovering more about how cancer behaves, and how we can help cure it." Raising research dollars with the Canadian
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Across the globe, September is recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In North Grenville, this month is marked with a proclamation ceremony and flag raising at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Sept. 1. Kemptville also hosts the annual Neon Night Fun Run/Walk for childhood cancer research, which is set for Sept. 22 in Riverside Park. Pictured, members of council and a group of local families, friends, and the Neon Night committee raise the flag. Cancer Society through events like Neon Night brings awareness to the difficulties that children face in the battle with cancer.
The Canadian Cancer Society has invested more than $50 million in the past 15 years supporting more than 170 research projects
to help children survive cancer and lead full lives. "This month is dedicated to childhood cancer, and it is our responsibility to

join them in their battle and spread awareness about what cancer means to a child and their family," said Burich. "It means not being able to go to school, not being able to play outside with their friends, being separated from their siblings during a long hospital stay, and countless needles, tests, radiation, steroids, and chemotherapy. So, wear a gold ribbon. Tie one around your tree. Paint your door gold to September, donate blood, or register for Neon Night Fun Run, happening Sept. 22 in our community." "One child with cancer is one too many, and it's our job as a community to do what we can for our children," she concluded. "Thank you."

OPINION
WALKING OPTIONS IN THE DISTRICT KEEP IMPROVING ADDITION OF OVRT A GREAT OPTION FOR WALKERS, JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE Column
As family, friends and regular readers know I am a dedicated walker. For nearly two decades I have taken a daily walk and now it's such a regular part of my routine that if I am unable to walk on a given day I really notice it. I enjoy walking so much that I really miss the ex-
perience if travel or other circumstances cause a break in my usual pattern. Walking has so many benefits. Not only is it good for a person's health but I find that I do some of my best thinking when I clear my head and set off on a long walk. I also meet a lot of people along the way. A good class of people I hasten to add! Because I usually follow the same route I am also able to see and follow what is happening in the heart of our community. Walking helps me keep on top of things and in the newspaper business that's a big advantage.
Most recently I have a companion on my daily walks. My wife Kathleen retired a few weeks ago after 30 years working in the insurance business. Previously she was only able to join me on weekends, holidays or occasionally after work hours. I'm really enjoying having Kathy with me every day now and we are establishing a new routine of walking earlier in the day. At the same time it is good to see that the number of good locations to walk, run, bicycle and drive all-terrain vehicles or snowmobiles (or to ski and
snowshoe in winter) are increasing in this region. A couple of weeks ago I lamented the lack of passenger rail service in so many areas of the country, including Carleton Place where we live. However the two major railway corridors which were once so busy here have been, or are in the process of being, transformed into public trails. The former Canadian National (CN) line from Carleton Place to Nepean has long since been incorporated into the Trans Canada Trail. It's very busy, especially on weekends.
At present the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail is under development along a nearly 300 kilometre section of what was once the Canadian Pacific (CP) rail line from Mattawa to Brockville. In 2016 Lanark and Renfrew counties, along with the Township of Papineau-Cameron purchased a 296 km section of track bed which, eventually, will be a well maintained recreation trail connecting Smiths Falls to Mattawa. The trail passes through Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills, Arnprior, Pembroke and Petawawa. Carleton Place already has a good trail network within its boundaries including picturesque sections bordering the Mississippi River. The most adventurous and durable people here have long had access to the Trans Canada Trail. Now the Ottawa Valley trail, running north to south, is under development. In fact portions of
the trail in Carleton Place are now virtually complete, although use is being discouraged until all of the work is done. With Kathy and I now walking together every day we sometimes break away from our usual route, which covers streets on both sides of the river, and opt for walks along the now extensive and growing trail network in town. In our community at least there are lots of options and plenty of room for everyone to use the growing trail network. I encourage people to take to their heels and enjoy the available infrastructure. Good experiences await you I'm certain! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. The Lanark Animal Welfare Society is preparing for renovations and have no more room for items for future garage sales for the rest of 2018. So until further notice, LAWS is not accepting items at this time. On behalf of LAWS, we wish to thank the Hinton Auto Group and the staff at Smiths Falls Ford for their fundraising barbecue and car wash. In four hours, they raised $800 for the shelter. It was greatly appreciated that the Smiths Falls Ford staff came in on their day off. Featured pets Sweet Donna is barely one year old but already raised four kittens; two of her own and two who needed a mamma. Now that they have found homes she is taking her time to enjoy herself in her foster home having fun and playing games, chasing toys and running through the tunnel. Once Donna gains your trust she will follow you around until she get pets and praises. Donna is still in a foster home very
close by our shelter. Should you be interested in meeting Donna you can call the shelter at 613-283-9308 to make arrangements to meet her. Please meet Sneakers and Scamper. Two kittens brothers of about four months old. They're both playful, affectionate, handsome and they would love to have a cat-friend to go home to. So whether they're going together, which would be great, or if they go to a loving home where they meet other resident cats, it doesn't matter as long as they're finding a home. Both kittens are available for adoption in Perth at Pet Valu. Meet Tuffy who us our temporary office cat. He is enjoying being around people and all the comings and goings that goes on at LAWS. He only tolerates short sessions at petting and attention, but is super friendly when it's time for his wet food in the morning and evening! He is earning his keep too by catching a few mice. He needs to go to a home where

The fifth annual Festival of Small Halls (FOSH) officially kicks off Sept. 13, making its way through Almonte, Chaffey's
Lock, Pakenham, Tweed, Athens, McDonalds Corners, Burritts Rapids, Merrickville, Elgin and more. It concludes Sept. 30. According to FOSH general manager Kelly Symes, a total of 34 acts will unfold over the course of three weekends, and popularity in the festival keeps growing. "We're now up to four shows a night on the weekend nights," she
explained. " ... Music is good for us; it's good for the soul." This year, FOSH has added roughly eight new venues to its arsenal. "We have such amazing communities that run between Ottawa and Peterborough, so we can showcase these spaces not only as tourism spots but as great places for live music," she remarked. "Ninety-five per cent of
our halls from last year have all come back on board and it's become kind of a trend of sorts." Some of those spaces include the Almonte Old Town Hall, known for its acoustics, Chaffey's Lock Community Hall, the Red Brick School in Elgin and the Merrickville United Church. At-

in Kemptville has raised $2,196 for Neon Night. Steve Jonsson, owner of the grocery store, presented the cheque to Neon Night cochair Brenda Burich on Aug. 31. "This is all from our customer window campaign," he said. "It's our fifth year doing it, and every year it's grown." Jonsson said there was a huge response to the fundraising initiative this year,
and that customers' generous contributions show just how giving the Kemptville community is. "This is the most money we've collected to date for Neon Night through the window campaign. It's a lot of money to raise in such a short period of time." The funds were collected from Aug. 11-26, with an average donation of $5. "The staff really got involved, and they had a friendly competition that helped push them along,"
said Jonsson. "It's not just about raising money; it's also about raising awareness, and our staff wore Neon Night Tshirts through the campaign to get people out to the event, as well." Jonsson and Burich estimated that close to $5,000 has been raised for Neon Night through the grocer's annual window campaign to date, over the past five years. Burich said the momentum is still on for early registration to Neon Night, as it's less costly to register in advance than on the day of the fundraiser. The event includes a 2 km and a 5 km non-compet-
itive fun run/walk for all ages and abilities. Participants are encouraged to wear bright and colourful attire. Neon Night kicks off with a barbecue, face painting, entertainment, and other family-friendly activities at 5:30 p.m., opening ceremonies and a warm-up at 7 p.m., the start of the 5 km fun run/ walk at 7:30 p.m., the start of the 2 km fun run/walk at 7:45 p.m., and a postparty until 9 p.m. Registration will be open onsite at 5:30 p.m. Register in advance as a team or individual at: www.cancer.ca/NeonNightKemptville.
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Steve Jonsson, owner of Jonsson's Independent Grocer in Kemptville, presents a cheque for $2,196 to Brenda Burich, co-chair of the annual Neon Night Fun Run in support of childhood cancer research. The funds were raised through the grocery store's annual window campaign, through which, customers make donations while being processed at the cash and their names are written on colourful stickers which decorate the windows of the store, as pictured.

As is in the past, local opening acts have been selected to perform with the headliners at nearly all of the venues. "It's a great way to showcase local talent who might not reach these crowds otherwise," Symes said. She noted that she's thrilled to have secured opening act Kim Pollard for the Friday, Sept. 28 show with headliners Ken Whiteley and The Levy Sisters at Seeley's Bay Community Hall.
"She has this powerful soulful voice and she's so passionate in her writing. It's music than can really be felt," Symes stated. Other openers to watch for are folk duo Kris and Dee, appearing with Fearing on Sept. 15.
surprised by the number of halls that want to participate in the event and as we continue to grow toward the west, more awareness is generated for the festival," Symes explained. " ... We're also developing more of an awareness in western Ontario and southern Ontario, which gives artists an opportunity to develop a stronger following." While some shows have sold out, there are many tickets still available for the 2018 Festival of Small Halls. For complete lineup information and to purchase tickets, visit thefestivalofsmallhalls.com.
The future Over their five years, Syme said the festival has been reaching audiences farther afield, including Niagara Falls and Ajax. With the addition of venues to the west such as Tweed and Combermere, she hopes the festival continues to grow westward. "I've been really thrilled and

tendees not only have the opportunity to discover a hidden gem in their backyard, but it's also a chance for artists to have up close and personal experiences with the crowd. "Audience members truly get a unique experience with the festival," Symes noted. " ... There's such an overall feeling of inclusion and it's awesome for community halls to support live music the way they do." " ... It shows live music is well supported in small communities," she added. The music Symes said she's "thrilled" with how this year's FOSH lineup came together. "We were lucky to get a few bucket list artists we've wanted for a few years." Some of those artists include folk singer/songwriter Stephen Fearing, who founded Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. He will play two shows - Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with Kelly Sloan at St. Andrew's United Church in Pakenham, and Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. with Kris and Dee at Grace Hall in Sydenham. "We're really excited to have him," she said. "It's rare that you get to see such a musician up close and experience great music. He's been on our radar for a couple of years." Another exciting addition is up and coming Canadian country/ blues musician, Colter Wall. The Saskatchewan born Wall released his debut album in May 2017 and since then has been drawing comparisons to legends such as Johnny Cash. "We're really lucky to get him," Symes said. "We booked him back in December of last year." Wall will also be playing two shows, the first on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Athens' Joshua Bates Centre. The next day's show on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., he will be joined by Henry Norwood at the McDonalds Corners Agricultural Hall. This appearance has sold out. Juno Award-winning First Nation singer/songwriter William Prince, who will perform on opening night of the festival, Thursday, Sept. 13, is another up and coming artist. He will be joined by local opening band, Outside I'm a Giant, at the Almonte Old Town Hall for a 7:30 p.m. show. "He was signed to Glassnote Records, which is Mumford & Sons' label," Symes explained. "All we get him for is one night because he's in such demand."
The festival is pleased to have Toronto native Basia Bulat back this year as well. She will appear at Merrickville United Church on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. with Off the Grid. "She was such a hit we decided we had to have her back this year," Symes said. "There's such beautiful harmonies with a little bit of folk, jazz and pop fused in together." Symes said it's really exciting to see the lineup for the festival evolve from year to year. "We're so lucky to have all of these people jump on board and commit to playing these small

Vallillee, Catherine Florence (nee Lapointe)
Catherine Florence Vallillee (nee Lapointe) passed away on August 26th at the Carleton Place Terrace. She was 96 years old. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Gerald Vallillee, great friend Walter Goodings, and siblings John, Bernard, Leonard, Wilfred and Theresa. She is mourned by her sister Frances Dagenais and her four children Jane Beall (Pat Wolfe), David (Laura- deceased), Wendy (Alan Eschke) and Derek. Grandchildren Bernardo Valero, Christopher Beall, Paul Vallillee, Nathan Vallillee and Janeva Wolfe will miss her as well as will her great grandchildren, Bernie Valero, Jr., Brian Valero, Julia Beall, Ainsley O’Loughlin, Taylum Vallillee, Logan Vallillee, Kaycee Vallillee, Daymon Vallillee, Christopher Vallillee and Natasha Fournier. Catherine grew up in Pembroke, Ontario in a Franco-Ontarian family, and spent several years of her childhood in a wheelchair with polio. After that she was always uneasy with animals as the horse pulling the milk wagon down Front Street in Pembroke sometimes attempted to rest his head on her shoulder and she was powerless to move away. Being immobile for her early childhood was also the origin of a lifelong fear of insects, especially flies that would land on her in her wheelchair. Later, Catherine attended a private high school in Montreal as there was no French school in Pembroke above grade 8. She vividly remembered arriving in Montreal on September 10th, 1939, the day war was declared. She wandered around in the general confusion and chaos of the train station and wasn’t found by her school escort until after nightfall. After high school, she worked in a munitions factory in Brownsburg, Quebec where she met her future husband, Gerald. Once he was called up, she returned with daughter Jane to her family in Pembroke. After the war, there was plenty of travel. Gerald continued with his education, completing a PhD in Classics at the University of Chicago. As a professor, and later Dean, Catherine moved with her family to Lennoxville, Ottawa, Waterloo, and Sudbury. In her role as the Dean’s wife, she enjoyed entertaining, including on one memorable occasion, welcoming the Secretary General of the United Nations, U Thant, to dinner. In 1979 Catherine went to Darwin, Australia with daughter Jane, grandson Christopher and young son Derek. Although she planned to stay only until Jane was settled, the lure of the tropics and an understanding husband allowed her to enjoy a complete year of Aussie hospitality. On her husband’s retirement, Catherine and Gerald moved to Lanark to be near family. Her youngest daughter, Wendy, owned the Lanark Era for many years. Several years after her husband’s death, Catherine met and enjoyed a close friendship with Walter Goodings until his death 9 years ago. Four years ago, Catherine moved to the Carleton Place Terrace where she lived happily until her death. She especially enjoyed her friends at her dinner table and was often seen smiling and laughing. She loved listening to CBC and reading. Just before she broke her ankle which precipitated her death, she was busy reading a biography of Rene Levesque. She will be greatly missed by friends, family and all who knew her. In remembrance of Catherine, contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society Wheels of Hope would be appreciated. Arrangements are private for the family and are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Home, Perth www.blairandson.com

PORTEOUS In memory of Ron Porteous who left us 10 years ago on September 7th 2008. Our brother lives with us in memory, Before our eyes he grew weaker every day. Doing all we could to save him, Until God took him away. Never shall his memory fade. Our sweetest love lingers, Forever round his peaceful grave. Gone but not forgotten, Love Trevor and Susan and family
Moore, Lorna - In loving memory of a dear sister who passed away Sept. 7, 2009. Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses you more than us, And when old times we often recall, It’s then we miss you most of all. We think about you always, We talk about you still, You have never been forgotten, And you never will. We hold you close within our hearts, And there you will remain, To walk and guide us through our lives, Until we meet again. Always loved, never forgotten Sister Joyce Laming and Ron Brother Preston Laming and Kay
ADAMS, Wayne – In loving memory of a dear husband, father and grandfather who left us one year ago, September 6, 2017. God looked around his garden, And found an empty place, He then looked down upon this earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you. And lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough. And the hills are hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered, “Peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Missing you and loving you forever Judy and family ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dad/Grandpa In tears we saw you suffer, We watched you fade away, Dad, our hearts were breaking, But we could not have you stay. Those who have a father, Love him while you may, For God decided mine Was too ill to stay. Missing you and loving you forever Derek and Lorrie Darren Karson, Keelan, Chance and Chasetan

YOUNG MARY THANKFUL FOR HER TEACHER, FRIENDS, COLUMNIST RECALLS MARY COOK Column
Filled with a mixture of anticipation and dread, I headed off to the Northcote School for the first day back after a long summer vacation. I loved going to school, but this year would be very different. My sister Audrey had graduated from the Entrance Class, and she wouldn't be there to look after me. Who would walk me to school through the bush out our long lane to the Northcote Side Road? Who would make sure I had my lunch tucked into my book bag every morning, setting it on the table at the back of the school room at the ready when Miss Crosby nodded that morning classes were over? And so that first day, my stomach was in knots. But Joyce and Velma, my best friends, were there, and they didn't seem the least bit concerned. Of course, Velma had an older sister still there, and Joyce never had a sister to begin with.
It looked like the last thing on Miss Crosby's mind was whether or not I was upset. She set right to getting us all seated. I noticed she was careful not to sit my brother Emerson beside Cecil, but settled them in different rows well apart. They spelled trouble if put together! I had hoped to get seated beside either Velma or Joyce, but Miss Crosby gave them seats in the second row. I was left standing at the back of the room waiting to be called. Miss Crosby next sat the Senior Fourths, but leaving the front desk empty. Once everyone else was in place, Miss Crosby finally called my name and pointed to the only place left in the entire room, that empty desk. What was left of the morning passed quickly, and then it was time for lunch. Miss Crosby nodded at Velma's sister, and she went to the table at the back of the room, took my lunch bag and brought it to me. She made sure I had a place to sit beside Joyce and Velma. The knot in my stomach began to ease. Everything was working out just fine, as we laughed and talked about going back to school and the first day. When it was time to go home, Velma's sister said I was to walk home with
them. She said then all I would have to do was cut across the twenty-acre field that separated our two farms leading right to our house. She knew how I was frightened to walk through the deep bush that filled our long lane into our barnyard. That night after we had said our prayers around Mother's knee I went to the braided rug beside our bed. I knelt down and had a little talk with God, as I often did. Usually it was to ask a special favour. But tonight was different. Tonight it was to give thanks. I gave a prayer of thanks to having a teacher like Miss Crosby, and a friend like Velma who had an older sister who had reached out to me. I went to bed with a much lighter heart than I had in the morning, and when I got out of bed the next day, my fears were gone, and I couldn't wait to get back to the Northcote School. Go to https:// www.smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for ebook purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca. Mary is a longtime writer with several books in print and in electronic copies. 'Mary Cook's Memories' appears as a regular column.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
