PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A member of the North Grenville Historical Society (NGHS), Ron Gould, has had the opportunity to explore the contents of a 111-year-old time capsule that was kept in the form of a concrete cornerstone block of the former Leslie Hall. The cornerstone was laid on Oct. 8, 1907, and excavated last November when Leslie Hall was demolished. The historical building was in need of significant repairs due to damage over the years and the deterioration of its concrete blocks. When the hall was torn down, St. James Anglican Church kindly donated the time capsule to the NGHS. The capsule was in the form of a 24x12x9-inch block, See COINS, page 9

PEOPLE FIRST NORTH GRENVILLE GEARS UP FOR NEON NIGHT PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The North Grenville chapter of People First is registering a team to participate in the Neon Night Fun Run for childhood cancer research on Saturday, Sept. 22. So far, they've recruited 15 members as an effort to

give back to their community, which they made one of their main goals for this year. "The community has done so much for us and we're so fortunate," said Kaitlyn Utman, a staff advisor with People First, "so that's why we're really trying to focus on giving back this year."

Aside from those running or walking at the event, other People First members will also be gathering pledges. "Our goal is to have every participant raise a hundred dollars, so we hope to donate $1,500," said Carole Pollock, another People First North Grenville advisor.

People First of Canada is the national voice for people who have been labelled with an intellectual disability. They advocate for equality; freedom, choice, and an equal voice. "People First is about interacting with the community," said Jason Payne, the organization's current secretary. "We try to spread the message that people with disabilities can do the things that people without disabilities are able to do." Payne explained that if a disabled person is struggling with something in the community or is mistreated, they can bring the issue to a People First meeting for discussion. "We have a voice," he said. "So we can talk about problems like that at our monthly meetings and how we can try to resolve them." Utman recently joined People First North Grenville in the last few years

and is learning from Pollock and their third advisor, Bruce Paterson. "Both Carole and Bruce are awesome role models," she said. "I've learned so much about People First and how far we've come." "Two People First members presently sit on the North Grenville Accessibility Committee," said Paterson, "which is quite a good boost to us, as it helps us get involved in the community." Jamie Bertrand has been a member of People First North Grenville for about two years and gets to sit in on the community support staff meetings to give updates on what People First is up to. You may recognize him from the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Kemptville, where he volunteers. Wayne Richer is president for People First; a role he's held for four years now. The members are se-

lected for their roles through an election process that takes place every two years. "The group has become a lot stronger in the last few years," said Pollock. "Our role as advisors is to encourage people to self-advocate and take charge at the meetings," said Pollock. "We empower them, and when that happens, we are able to step back and let them do their own thing." In early September, she attended a People First conference in Gatineau with a few of the North Grenville members, including Richer. "The People First members ran the whole meeting and the advisors did absolutely nothing," said Pollock. "So, that can be a goal for us. Wayne was there, so after experiencing that, he now knows what he'd like to work on." See PEOPLE, page 6

MERRICKVILLE AIR CADET EARNS PRIVATE PILOT'S WINGS Don Weatherall, of Merrickville, a senior cadet with the 585 Rideau Squadron Air Cadets, has earned his private pilot's wings. He graduated on Friday, Aug. 24, from MAG Aerospace in Sudbury after passing his Transport Canada flight and written examinations. Flight Sgt. Don Weatherall is now a licensed private pilot with over 50 hours flight time in his logbook. Earning a shiny set of pilot's wings (glider or private pilot) is the crowning ambition for many air cadets. It is a difficult task that demands strong academic potential, good physical co-ordination, an ability to learn quickly and to work hard. "My favourite part of the course was my three-hour cross-country solo flight from Sudbury to North Bay and back." Weatherall said the most challenging aspect of the course was "time management. Juggling studying, preparing flight planning documentation, the actual flying, and getting enough sleep. The course was very intense from the first day, right to the wings parade," he said. Weatherall is the only cadet from Smiths Falls in several years to have earned his pilot's wings. The 585 Squadron is hoping to send more candidates next summer to flight schools across the province. Glider training is held at Mountainview airport, near Trenton, Ont., but private pilot courses are held in three flight schools around the province - MAG Aerospace Canada in Sudbury, Diamond Flight Centre in London, and Durham Flight Centre in Oshawa.

Instructors are civilian flight instructors certified by Transport Canada. Of the 63 cadets selected from air cadet squadrons across the province to train on Cessna 172 Skyhawks this past summer, 38 remained in Ontario, and the rest trained in either Gander, N.L., or St-Jean, Que. All 63 cadets successfully received their wings. Weatherall is not the only cadet to have succeeded during summer training, howSee OVER, page 7

"It was a lot of fun, said Richer. "I met a lot of new people." At the conference, Richer was inspired when he got the opportunity to speak with Kory Earle, the current President of People First Canada who resides in Carleton Place.

"I learned that I want to be like Kory Earle one day," he said. "He's kind, and he's pretty good at what he does." Richer also takes an interest in anti-bullying initiatives, and would like to meet the mayor of North Grenville to discuss the issue locally. "I want to see how he feels

about bullying, and possibly go to schools and see what is happening to make it a better place for both teachers and students," he said. "It's very serious; especially to me, very deeply, and I imagine to other people here, too." People First North Grenville has strengthened significantly

in the last five years. There are roughly 15 regular members and no membership fees. Support for the organization is primarily through donations and sponsorship. As a fundraising effort, the group organizes a spaghetti dinner at the legion once a year, as well as karaoke nights, pizza nights, barbecues, bottle drives,

"The truck centre sponsored us for two years in a row at the barbecue, and then they had a golf tournament on our behalf. That, in itself, really helped our name get out there. It was very exciting for us." With some of the funds that they received through the Tallman Truck Centre's initiatives, People First North Grenville was able to go to Niagara Falls for the first International Day for People with Disabilities in 2016. "We wrote a song to sing and had a producer put music to it," said Utman. "We each sang a part, and performed it on stage for a whole crowd of people. We brought a busload with us." "That was one of the best experiences I've ever had," Richer said. To learn more about People First North Grenville, visit www.PeopleFirstNG.wordpress.com.

EDITORIAL

MAKE ALL-CANDIDATES FORUMS MEANINGFUL Too often all-candidates meetings are poorly attended with only hard-core supporters showing up to cheer on their favourites. That's unfortunate, for candidates forums can be a valuable tool in ensuring voters make informed choices. That's especially true in municipal elections when, unlike federal and provincial votes, the electorate gets to evaluate the candidates without party politics and leader popularity muddying the waters. Most voters have at least a passing knowledge of party platforms and their leaders' abilities. However, municipal hopefuls, especially newcomers, can be a mystery to many ratepayers. When there are several newcomers in the race, as is the case this year in most area municipalities, it's particularly important to give the electorate a chance to scrutinize them in action on a public stage with their peers. If voters are to choose council members who really reflect their priorities and values, they need to hear firsthand as candidates elucidate their thoughts and views. A discerning voter can learn a great deal from seeing how candidates handle themselves under pressure. That's why debates should not be dominated by speeches. While they can be enlightening, they all too often tend to be full of platitudes and self-evident truths. The audience can better evaluate the candidates through unscripted questions from the audience. Conversely, the public's questions are instructive for candidates in understanding what issues are foremost in the minds of their constituents. However, to make the question period the most important element in a candidate forum as it should be, everyone in the audience should feel comfortable in participating. For an all-candidates forum to be effective, it should be inclusive and welcoming, walking the line between orderly and passionate. It's not easy. Everyone has a role, especially the moderator and his or her support workers. Usually there are far more questions posed than there is time for them to be answered, especially if there are a large number of candidates on stage. So what questions are chosen and how long candidates are given to answer them are important. The moderator and crew need to be knowledgeable enough about the community to ensure relevant questions are asked and understood properly, and quick-witted enough to put a stop to duplications and prevent loudmouths from dominating proceedings. They should be strict enough to keep candidates on topic and time, yet flexible enough to allow them to digress if it helps the audience understand the response and to rebut their opponents if warranted. After all, voters want to know where candidates differ, not so much on what they agree. The audience members can help by asking succinct questions that draw out where the candidates stand on issues of importance to the community. Wandering diatribes, long preambles and unsubstantiated accusations have no part in questions. Time is of the essence at these sessions. In municipalities where the number of candidates reaches double figures, it makes sense to hold two forums, one for mayor and deputy mayor and another for councillors to give everyone time to speak their piece. If voters are to leave the forum armed with enough insight to make informed choices, they need to ask questions and hear answers that allow them to determine which candidates have the right stuff to guide their municipalities for the next four years.

Submitted/Ron Gould Nine newspapers from October of 1907 were included in the Robert Leslie Memorial Hall time capsule. The papers were from Kemptville, Brockville, Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto. The capsule also contained four silver coins and a handwritten dedication document from the people who laid the cornerstone of Leslie Hall containing these items. ried out at the ceremony, as the stone was sprinkled with corn and had wine poured over it before it was finally 'anointed' with water. In an article printed in the May 7, 1908 issue of the Kemptville Telegram, it was divulged that a medical doctor by the name of Dr. Hanna, and one of the attendees at the laying of the cornerstone ceremony, was the first person to own a car in Kemptville. "Kemptville now possesses an automobile," the article states. "Dr. Hanna is the fortunate owner. For some time, the doctor has had a notion that he would like to travel around in an auto, so on Tuesday he visited the Capital and on Wednesday returned with the handsome car, which he purchased from Wilson and Sons of Ottawa." The car was a 1907 Buick, weighing 1600 lbs., with two cylinders, and 22 horse power. Learning of this has only stirred more questions for Gould. "I want to know how long it took him to travel here, what route he took, and whether he had to bring gas with him," he said. In the same cavity as the letter were four coins sealed in a glass jar, all silver. There was a 5-cent piece from 1902, a 10-cent piece from 1907, a 25-cent piece from 1906, and a 50cent piece from 1906. It is

uncertain who provided the coins for the capsule, but since the Royal Mint did not open in Ottawa until January of 1908, we know that the coins were not Canadian-made. Gould found that with inflation alone, 90 cents of pocket change in 1907 would be equivalent to over $20 today. He was disappointed that the time capsule did not include a penny, which would have been 25.4mm in diameter, mostly copper, and meant to be a one-inch measuring tool back then. The time capsule's true treasure may be the nine local newspapers that were found within the second cavity of the cornerstone. Those included were the Oct. 3 issue of the Kemptville Telegram, the Oct. 3 Weekly Advance (Kemptville), the Oct. 4 Morning Citizen (Ottawa), the Oct. 5 Evening Recorder (Brockville), the Oct. 4 Brockville Times, the Oct. 7 Gazette (Montreal), the Oct. 7 Montreal Daily Star, the Oct. 7 Daily Mail and Empire (Toronto) and the Oct. 7 Globe (Toronto). The newspapers were placed in a closed chamber and conditioned to 95 per cent RH (relative humidity) to go through a rehydrating process in order to be unfolded in stages. Gould says that back then, newspapers were funded by political parties that relied heavily on them

It's evident that this project has ignited Gould's interest and passion for researching local history during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. "Now, everything I do is related to this time period," he laughed. Currently, he is working on projects at the NGHS from the early 1850s and researching a family artifact from 1901, "and I'm not even a historian!" he exclaimed. To learn more about the Robert Leslie Memorial Hall time capsule, check for updates at www.InsideOttawaValley.com as we continue to report on the North Grenville Historical Society's findings.

weighing 160 lbs and baring the inscription, 'A.D. 1907' on the outer surface. There were two cavities within the block, containing the items that were left for our discovery today. Gould took on the task of opening the capsule and carefully exploring the items, which he has researched every day for nearly the past year. He compiled a 98-slide presentation on the contents, which was shown to the public on Sept. 12 at Mount Zion Lodge #28 in Kemptville. The Advance spoke with Gould about his experience exploring the capsule on Sept. 17. "I never stopped, from that November, until two days before the presentation," he said. "This has taken thousands of hours, and it's been a marvellous adventure." Within the block, Gould found a three-page handwritten letter, four coins, and nine newspapers. During his extensive research into these items, Gould learned an immeasurable amount about life in 1907 through newspaper articles and advertisements, but also from the time capsule itself. "The block itself is rich with historical significance," he said. The concrete cornerstone was made in Kemptville in a style that declined in the 1920s and was nearly nonexistent by the 1940s. The same style of the initial rock-faced block, or "imitation stone," can also be seen on the 1910 Advance building in downtown Kemptville, across from the former Carnegie Library building at 207 Prescott Street, which was also built with the same style of concrete blocks. These blocks were made by Dominion Concrete Company, established in Kemptville in 1904 and closed in the '50s. The factory was located between Riverside Park and Prescott Street. "I learned a lot about this community," said

Gould. "Dominion Concrete took up such a large area, and has left us buildings that will last another hundred years." Within the first cavity of the time capsule, a handwritten letter was found protectively wrapped in tarpaper and folded into four. It was written in iron gall ink on Empire Linen watermarked bond paper. The letter served as a dedication document, listing all that were present at the laying of the cornerstone ceremony, as well as those who were invited, and dignitaries at the time that were named out of respect, whether they were in attendance or not. "The masons had to use the process of listing God first, then the King, and then go down through everyone that was invited, by order of importance or ranking," explained Gould. "These people needed to be listed because of their position, but they did not all necessarily make it to the event." Two days after the cornerstone was laid, the Oct. 10, 1907 issue of The Weekly Advance printed an article on its front page about the 'very memorable event,' detailing a parade, marching band, and that the stone was 'truly laid' by the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada, A.T. Freed. Speeches were delivered by the architects, building committee, politicians, and dignitaries from the Church of England and the Masonic Order. Dinner and tea were served that evening in the original St. James Hall, and a gala concert was held in the Odd Fellows Hall. This grand celebration honoured Robert Leslie, after which the hall was named. He was a chartered member of the Masonic Mount Zion Lodge #28, Clerk of the Township of Oxford-on-Rideau, Clerk of the Village of Kemptville, Post Master of Kemptville for 40 years, and Superintendent of St. James Sunday School for over 50 years. Masonic rites were car-

to inform and rally their supporters. The papers emphasized sports, crime, sensationalism, and celebrity gossip. The average cost of a newspaper in 1907 was five cents a day or one dollar a year. Gould was impressed at the extent of communication that was possible through Morris code at the time. "We think that the world was so much slower and so disconnected that news took a long time to get around - but this has proven that that's not true," he said. "I'm impressed with how quickly news moved around, and it was all dots and dashes."

The sun was shining, the barbecue was lit and the auctioneer was at the podium as House of Lazarus broke its annual fundraiser's record. The 2018 Live Twilight Auction was held at the Mountainbased organization Friday, Sept. 7, raising $7,413 for the local food bank and outreach mission. Included in that total is a contribution from RBC Kemptville for $1,000 while the remainder came from auction sales and the barbecue chicken dinner. "Once again, it's the generous contributions from our community and the many volunteers who donated their time and energy that made this event such a success," HOL executive director Cathy Ashby said. Members from Peter Ross Auction Services Ltd. donated their time and expertise while members of RBC Kemptville dropped by the mission days ahead of the event to volunteer

their time in preparation. As well, several members of the Mountain and District Lions Club were on hand to man the barbecue during the Fridaynight fundraiser. In addition to the items HOL sorters had been storing from the mission's Drop Off Depot over the past six months, many community members delivered items to House of Lazarus specifically for the auction, including several boxes of collectibles as well as a specially made stained-glass window. House of Lazarus is a food bank and outreach mission located in Mountain, serving hundreds of clients from surrounding communities, including all of Dundas County, Grenville County and South Ottawa. Last year, 600 people were fed through HOL's food bank while 2,630 people were provided with food, clothing, furniture and household goods through its out-

reach programming. A community-supported venture, House of Lazarus does not rely on government funding. It's through thrift stores, grants, donations

and fundraisers that its projects and programs happen. For more information on House of Lazarus projects, programs and events, please visit

FOUL PLAY NOT SUSPECTED IN CAT DEATHS: OPP

R0013021901

On Sept. 13, The Grenville County Ontario Provincial Police responded to six calls for service in relation to missing or deceased cats. Police believe the influx of cat calls is likely related to a recent article about the increase in missing or dead cats in the Kemptville area. With the assistance of a conservation officer, officers have in-

vestigated the reported incidents. They report that there is currently, no reason to suspect foul play, as deceased cats appear to have been killed by animals; conservation authorities suspect coyotes. The OPP say they will not investigate a missing cat unless criminal activity is suspected, and encourage pet owners to keep their cats indoors to ensure their safety.

Submitted/House of Lazarus House of Lazarus in Mountain raised more than $7,000 Sept. 7 during its annual Live Twilight Auction. Peter Ross Auctions Services Ltd. donated their time and services to the event. Pictured, Peter Ross and Helen Ross, centre, with volunteers.

TURNING BACK TIME NEWSPAPERS TELL STORIES OF OUR HISTORY, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column

By now you may have heard they found a 100year-old time capsule when they demolished Leslie Hall. What did Kemptville residents want us to know about life in our little town back then? What items did they choose to place in that capsule and seal away in a cement block, to be uncovered and discovered 100 years later? As I write this, several old newspapers and collector coins have been revealed from inside the time capsule. I am anxious to see what else is in there. But in my opinion, the newspapers are all we really need. They tell the stories and live on for centuries if preserved properly. I did some digging through the archives about ten years ago when I was writing a history column for The Advance. Reading those old newspapers was quite an education. Beyond

the headlines, the articles and the editorials, there are so many clues to what life was like years ago, between the pages of a newspaper. Luckily the North Grenville Historical Society has many of these publications saved on micro fiche - itself a bit of technological history - so we can look things up and imagine Kemptville life in decades past. Old newspapers tell us what was going on back in the day, but they also give us an idea of how each bit of news was perceived. You will notice if you read an old newspaper that the idea of journalistic neutrality may not yet have been introduced at the time of printing. Today we accuse some publishers of being partisan in their thinly-veiled barbs against one political party or another. One-hundred years ago it was more likely that local reporters and editors would openly express their political opinions. They were also pretty nosy about residents' private business, so the papers were full of scandal and speculation. It no doubt sold more copies. The classified section had a busy personals section in days gone by. I guess it was like the original Facebook, spreading gos-

sip and connecting people. I remember reading one personal ad in a paper from the 40s. Buried among the birth and engagement announcements, was a small notice about a young woman who appeared to be entertaining people from out of town. The reporter had noticed a strange out-of-town vehicle in her laneway and had the gall to approach her and ask her who was visiting! Then he wrote about it (I say 'he' because most reporters were men, after all), so that everyone in this little town would know who they were, why they were visiting and when they were most likely to be leaving town. Bizarre. At first I thought the reporting of people's personal lives was incredibly intrusive. And then I realized, it was likely just the way they did things back then, in this small town, to keep people feeling safe and informed. We may not have had high security back in the earlier part of the 20th century but we sure knew how to keep an eye on things. Not much got past the local newspaper reporters. Another article from the 30s has made the rounds sever-

STEVE STRONGMAN KICKS OFF BLUES ON THE RIDEAU SEASON Juno Award winner Steve Strongman kicks off the 14th season of Blues On The Rideau at The Cove Inn, Westport Sept. 28 This wonderfully talented guitarist/ singer/ songwriter from "The Hammer" (Hamilton, Ont.) has achieved some very impressive recognition since he started his Blues career 11 years ago: three of his six albums have been nominated for Juno Awards and he won in 2013 for A Natural Fact. He's also been nomi-

nated for, and won, multiple Hamilton Music Awards and Maple Blues Awards including Guitarist, Songwriter and Album of the Year. And he's a fantastic, high-energy entertainer - a true showman. This marks Steve's 6th visit to The Cove - the fourth with his band and he's appeared twice solo acoustic. He's the perfect choice to kick off the 2018/ 19 season - the 14th year for this very popular dinner and show fundraiser series - one of the best of

its kind in Canada. BOTR has nine shows this season, once a month from September to May (December excluded). This season of BOTR is dedicated to the memory of my wife and partner in BOTR Diane Leduc Doran who died last November from liver disease. Visit www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca for dates, details, bios and YouTube videos of the artists. Tickets are only $65 (plus HST) and that includes a delicious full course buffet dinner,

dancing, door prizes and a chance to win a couple of major prizes at the end of the season. All shows run 7 to 11 p.m. All BOTR shows are fundraisers for different local charities. Proceeds from this one goes to The Ruby Gland Charity. To date over $68,000 has been raised by BOTR with the goal of at least another $5,000 for this season. Advance reservations are required - call The Cove at 613-273-3636 or email info@coveinn.com.

OPINION

HONOURING TERRY

HOW WE GET THE LOCAL SCOOP HAS CHANGED Continued from page 12

al times, and become part of our local folklore. It's the one about the strange black vehicle that was seen pulling into the big stone mansion on Oxford Street on more than one occasion. The writer noted that the car was a shiny black sedan, and that the driver killed the headlights as it cruised silently into the lane of the stately house, owned by a physician who had a practice in Chicago. The car also had Chicago license plates, the article said.

The writer surmised that the good doctor must have had mysterious friends visiting from out of town. Over the years someone decided that one of those elusive characters must have been Al Capone. Things really haven't changed that much. You can still get the local scoop at the barber shop or bakery. We just don't read about our neighbours' personal lives in the newspaper anymore, because we have a different idea now of what is truly newsworthy. We have learned to value our

privacy and to respect others' too, hopefully. And it is no longer considered scandalous to have a gentleman caller if you are one of the town's unmarried school teachers, living alone. It's called life - and it has changed in so many ways in the past 100 years. What will it be like in another 100? Diana Leeson Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. Her blog can be found at www.theaccidentalfarmwife.blogspot.com.

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland The annual Terry Fox Run in Kemptville was held Sunday, Sept. 16 and began on the St. Michael Catholic High School track. Participants had a choice of a 2k along County Road 44 or a 5k or 10k route through the trails of the Ferguson Forest Centre. Pictured: Runners, walkers, and cyclists take off on their journey.

OPINION

DRIVERS WHO DON'T SHARE ROAD BIG ANNOYANCE

JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT ROAD HOGS

JEFF MAGUIRE Column

Why don't motor vehicle drivers today share the road? OK, it's not everyone who is guilty of what I consider to be one of the cardinal sins of driving these days. But the number of motorists who clearly have no idea what their obliga-

tions are when they take to our streets and highways is shocking. From what I am witnessing and hearing with respect to this matter the problem is growing! It is true that people deliberately break the rules of the road continually. Speeding, red light running, tail-gating, illegal lane changes, failing to signal, dangerous passing and perhaps worst of all, distracted driving, are also increasing exponentially. The dangers inherent to operating a motor vehicle today have never been higher. Other drivers hold your life and those of your

loved ones in their hands and yet considering the chances they take while behind the wheel they evidently don't care. It's truly terrifying! In terms of failing to share the road I think this is a two-edged sword. A sword that's being wielded every time we take to the road today and it could strike any of us at any time. First of all it has become clear to me that many drivers simply have no idea they are supposed to share the road with oncoming traffic. Somehow they never learned why there is a centre line (in

yellow or white) on most roadways in Canada and the United States. It's pretty basic stuff. The centre line is only meant to be crossed when it's safe to do so. Otherwise you have to stay in your own lane and adjust to the speed of the vehicles ahead, or stop completely when there is an obstacle in your lane. You aren't supposed to cross into the other lane forcing oncoming drivers, who clearly have the right of way, to take evasive action or stop completely just to let you pass. If you are driving in the opposite lane you are breaking the

law in most cases. In Ontario there is a provincial offences ticket for "failing to share the road." I don't know how much it costs if you're caught by the police? But based on what is happening at present this particular fine should probably be tripled. Sadly the vast majority of offenders don't even know they're breaking the law and, let's face it, the likelihood of being caught is pretty small. Obviously some offenders find out the hard way. At that point it's too late because they have already caused a collision. The other edge of this particular "sword" relates to drivers who know better, but simply don't care. Like all motorists who break the rules of the road they are willing to take a chance and hope oncoming traffic either moves over or stops to let them pass. It's a calculated risk and in most cases they get

away with it. Although not before terrifying the drivers and occupants of vehicles who are in their proper lane and proceeding correctly. I also find that most drivers are lemmings when it comes to this issue. One driver breaks the law by passing illegally and everyone (or most drivers at least) follows them. Meanwhile oncoming motorists whose lane is completely clear are the ones forced to stop or are pushed to the curb, or in some cases off the road, by oncoming vehicles who have entered their lane. It's obvious to me more enforcement is needed in this area! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com

PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A fresh idea and a number of recent renovations has enabled the Merrickville United Church building to have even more of an impact on its community. The building has been given the additional purpose of an arts and cultural events venue, offering an accessible space for the community to host weddings and fundraising events, as well as enjoy musical and theatrical events, art exhibits, and more. The agreement was established in the spring under terms that provide stabilizing financial support to the church's operations. The name for the facility in its new role is the Merrickville United Arts Centre (MUAC). "It's still a church; we weren't trying to change it a lot," said Mark Hendersine, owner of the

wanted to. The church was only doing a few concerts a year before hooking up with Mark." According to Gallinger, the church didn't quite have the skills in setting up the sound or lighting, let alone the energy, as volunteers, to take on the work that was required. "We knew we had good

acoustics, so the hope was to find a partner that would bring the expertise," he said. The space is an accessible, all-inclusive community hub. For some of the events, you might even find Gallinger himself acting as bartender. "On those nights, the bar is also the complaints department," Hendersine laughed. He said Gallin-

ger's willingness to bartend has really helped with the transition. Hendersine recruited local contractors, plumbers and helping hands to carry out some serious renovations for the centre, and the church community contributed a lot of work as well. tween the re-spaced pews, custom cushions were ordered for the seating, and a dance floor has been constructed in front of the stage, which is also new. The MUAC has a variety of events lined up for the fall, including a drag show on Sept. 21, hosted by Merrickville-Wolford in Bloom. The Festival of Small Halls will bring Basia Bulat and Off the Grid on Sept. 22, and Meredith Axelrod will perform on Sept. 29 as part of the Home Routes tour. October will see Merrickville's Jazz Fest take over the venue from Oct. 11-14. Keith Glass and his band are also looking forward to their show at the centre on Oct. 20. Glass is a popular multi-instrumentalist, widely recognized for his founding role in the Juno award-winning band, Prairie Oyster. He will be releasing his brand new album, The Easy Way, at the event. "Churches get used for only a few hours a week traditionally, so it's wonderful to have this," said Glass. "These are beautiful

spaces designed for great acoustics, and they're all across the country, so why aren't they being used more often for that purpose?" Gallinger agreed, adding that every arts-focused town like Merrickville should have this type of venue. "It's what needs to happen. I mean, you can't turn every church into a concert venue, but for Merrickville, it's a match - it makes sense here." Despite having played in a so-called country band for the majority of his musical career, Glass draws from many different musical styles, and his new album has a strong R&B streak in it. "It's probably because that's what I listened to as a kid," he said. "It's a really great sound; the sound I've been looking for all my life, and I have it with this band." Aside from playing, Glass has also produced other artists' records for 1520 years. Hendersine said the new dance floor was built

for performances from bands like the Keith Glass Band. "There's always good stuff to dance to when he performs, and I like to see people on the dance floor. That's the vibe we want." Glass agreed, and admitted that having the audience dance is the most gratifying, affirming thing for a musician. "If you're playing rock and roll, you don't want people sitting on their hands; you want them to move, so I've always sort of tailored what I do to that." This past summer, the Keith Glass Band performed at the Kemptville Live Music Festival. Their Oct. 20 show at the MUAC will be opened by local singer-songwriter, Bruce Enloe; former owner of live music hub the Branch Restaurant in Kemptville. "He's a phenomenal songwriter, and a great human being," Glass said of Enloe. Advance tickets are available online for $15 at www.MerrickvilleUnitedArtsCentre.com and at the door for $20.

MARY COOK SHARES FOND MEMORIES OF ENJOYING COOKIES FROM BRISCOE'S GENERAL STORE MARY COOK Column

You could smell the maple cookies as soon as you opened the door into Briscoe's General Store. Like all the other cookies Mr. Briscoe sold, they were stored in tilted boxes in a row right down the centre of the store, but the cookies shaped like maple leafs were in the first box. Others were wafer thin, some were just round like biscuits, and some were chocolate with white icing. But I could never smell any of the other cookies ... only the maples. I used to think it was good planning on Mr. Briscoe's part to put the maple cookies near the front door. The wonderful smell helped deaden the reeking stench of coal oil in containers at the back of the store ... right beside the little barrel of molasses. There were no covers on the cookie boxes, but when the height of the summer assured you of a good crop of houseflies, in an attempt to keep them away from the cookies, long pieces of wrapping paper were laid over the entire row of cookie boxes. But when you lifted the paper, there were always flies underneath, which didn't seem to affect the sales one bit. I didn't have much use for the thin wafers, which, however, were Father's favourite. When a meal was over, he liked to pick up a wafer and soften it in his tea. Mother thought it was a disgusting habit, but it

was just one more thing she had to get used when she moved to the farm at Northcote. Of course, the maple cookies and the wafers were luxuries we didn't often enjoy. Father often had to go to the store in the middle of the day ... he might need nails, oil, or gas, and if that happened when I wasn't at the Northcote School, I was always allowed to go with him, which was a special thrill for me. Any time I could spend alone with Father, he gave me great job. He wasn't a talker, but he had plenty of

facial expressions and hand motions I could read like a book. Another reason I liked to go to the store with Father was that he always bought a few cookies for me. Of course, he never had any money in his pocket, so he would just tell Mr. Briscoe to put them on our bill. Mother, at the end of the month, after selling her wares in Renfrew, would go into the store at Northcote and settle up with Mr. Briscoe. Neither Mother nor Father ever laid out

cash when they bought supplies, which I used to think was just like getting something for nothing. So Father would first do his business with Mr. Briscoe. And then he would go over to the counter and take a small paper bag which was neatly piled in order of size with all the other bags. He always opened it with his thumb, and then put the bag to his lips and give it a hefty blow, and it would open up all the way immediately.

LEVI - In loving memory of a dear Father and Grandfather, John Peter Levi, who passed away September 24, 1999. Some day we hope to meet you, Some day, we know not when. We shall meet in a better land And never part again. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by the family IN MEMORIAM

IN MEMORIAM

COADY, Sean Douglas In loving memory of our dear son, who tragically was taken too soon, September 16, 2006. Every day our hearts are filled with sorrow, Wondering how we will make it through tomorrow. Our time with you was precious, And the memories we have are too. The love we share together keeps us close to you. Maybe we cannot touch your hand or see your smiling face, Maybe we cannot hear your voice or feel your warm embrace, But, there is something we will always have, Tucked safely in our hearts, Our love for you… your love for us… will never let us part. “Those we love stay with us always, locked in our hearts as long as our life remains.” Love, Mom and Dad

Currently, the Towns potable water system provides water to a population of approximately 8,980 people within the Town and the Atironto Subdivision (Township of Montague). The study was undertaken in accordance with the planning and design process for Schedule ‘B’ projects of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA). The completed Phase 2 Report (Report) documents the planning process of the study. By this notice, the Report is being placed on public record for a 30-day review period in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Class EA. The Report identifies a new elevated water tower located off Air Care Drive as the preferred potable water storage solution to service the Town. Based on an evaluation of the planning and design alternatives, and considering public and agency input, the recommended plan includes constructing a new elevated water tower in a Town owned vacant parcel of land located off of Air Care Drive. In addition, a mixing system, secondary disinfection, instrumentation level monitoring and water distribution system upgrades are required to support operation of the new elevated water tower. More information, is available for review at the following locations, starting September 13, 2018: POTABLE WATER STORAGE: Town Office Town of Smiths Falls 77 Beckwith Street North Smiths Falls, ON K7A 2B8 Mon.-Fri. 8:30 am- 4:30 pm Interested persons should provide written comment to the municipality on the proposal within 30 calendar days from the date of this Notice. Comments should be directed to the Town of Smiths Falls Director of Public Works and Utilities at the Town Office. If concerns arise regarding this project, which cannot be resolved in discussion with the municipality, a person or party may request that the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to order a change in the project status and require a higher level of assessment under an individual Environmental Assessment process (referred to as a Part II Order). Reasons must be provided for the request. Requests must be received by the Minister within 30 calendar days of this Notice. Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks 77 Wellesley Street West 11th Floor, Ferguson Block Toronto, ON M7A 2T5 -andDirector, Environmental Assessment and Permissions Branch Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks 135 St. Clair Avenue West 1st Floor Toronto, ON M4V 1P5 -andTown of Smiths Falls 77 Beckwith Street North Smiths Falls, ON K7A 2B8 Mon.-Fri. 8:30 am- 4:30 pm Telephone: 613-283-4124 If there is no request received by October 12, 2018, the Report is deemed complete and valid for a 10 year period. The Town could then proceed with implementing the preferred alternative anytime within this 10 year window, as presented in the planning documentation. Please note that ALL personal information included in a Part II Order submission – such as name, address, telephone number and property location – is collected, maintained and disclosed by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for the purpose of transparency and consultation. He would nod in my direction, and we would head over to the row of cookie boxes. He knew without asking what kind of cookie I would like. And with his hand that before had come in contact with the cows, the horses, the barn equipment, and the buggy, he would reach into each tilted box of the ones we want-

ed, and bring out a full fist of cookies! I knew Mother would wonder, if she were there, why Mr. Briscoe would bother covering the cookies with paper in the first place, when any farmer, without the benefit of a good hand wash, would saunter over to the boxes and grab a couple of handfuls of their favourite, serving themselves.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
