MUNICIPAL ELECTION
CANDIDATES DISCUSS INCLUSION, CANNABIS LEGALIZATION AT SEPT. 25 MEETING PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The first all candidates meeting for North Grenville was hosted by the Ontario Parenting Connection on Sept. 25 at North Grenville District High School (NGDHS). Municipal and school board trustee candidates were questioned on topics related to raising a family in North Grenville, touching on issues like recreation, safety, transportation, and the legalization of recreational cannabis. The stage within the high school cafetorium was packed with the 18 candidates and moderator, Jennifer Westendorp of Juice FM. The first question had been submitted in advance and asked how the candidates will show their support for the LGBTQ2 community in North Grenville if elected. "LGBTQ2 families exist in large numbers. Yet despite this, virtually no publicly funded support services or safe spaces are offered in North Grenville. Does your platform address this shortcoming, and if yes, how?" Mayoral candidate Nancy Peckford was the first to offer a response. She reiterated the priorities she set out at the launch of her campaign in May, which in-
cluded restoring and enhancing dialogue across community groups in North Grenville, which she believes is necessary in order to be an inclusive community. "With the LGBTQ2 community, the appetite is there to really elevate some of the interest and commitment there is in this community to providing the proper supports," she said. "I think it starts with dialogue." She recognized the need for more support and funding for organizations that are doing the work to promote diversity, dialogue, and inclusion. Kristin Strackerjan, candidate for councillor, said her priorities were health, wellness and safety. "If you look at the stats when it comes to suicide rates, depression, and mental health issues, certainly the LGBTQ2 community is adversely affected compared to the rest of the population," she said. Strackerjan stressed the importance of ensuring that mental health services are available to those who need them, that students are supported in school, and that the North Grenville community is welcoming to those who belong to the LGBTQ2 community. Councillor candidate Deron Johnston identified the opportunity for the

"I myself participated in the Pride Brockville parade, and the overwhelming sense I got was that these people were just glad to find a place that they belong," he said. The second question asked, "How do you feel about making County Road 44 in front of Kemptville College with two elementa-
ry schools and two daycares a school zone?" Incumbent councillor candidate Barb Tobin was the first to respond, stating that the public works department has been working on Concession Road and the surrounding area with the police services board to assess this concern. She said the hospital being nearby has been taken into consideration in terms of the traffic flow in that area, as well as an oncampus school's recent expansion and increase in

student population. "There will be a completed study that will look at that area of County Road 44 in terms of safe crosswalks and a safe area for students to get to and from school," she stated. Craig McCormick, councillor candidate, recalled his involvement with the establishment of the school zone on Concession Road when he was a community Sgt. with the OPP, and stated that perhaps that zone could be extended to the area in ques-

tion. "Safety is number one," he said. "The safety of our children and our community is my top priority," said incumbent Frank Onasanya. He expressed his full support of having a school zone posting, a crosswalk and a sidewalk on County Road 44 by the campus. While canvassing this year, Strackerjan said she's talked to people who've lived on Concession Road for a long time and they See RECREATION, page 4

The Ottawa Valley Male Choir is getting ready for a special performance on Sunday, Oct. 14 at St. John's United Church, located at 400 Prescott Street, Kemptville. The choir, based out of North Gower, is made up of roughly 20 members and has been performing for 22 years. John Baldwin joined in 2015, and says the concert is a fundraiser for the choir, so that they can continue their efforts in the community, performing at fundraisers for local churches and entertaining the elderly at retirement residences such as Hilltop Manor in Merrickville. "We perform in our communities including Kemptville and beyond, and are always open to invitations to sing," said Baldwin. Baldwin and a fellow choir member, Howard Godwin, say the choir's sound explores genres such as folk, gospel, and popular hits from the '50s and '60s. "With some of the songs, our sound is reminiscent of the Welsh mining choirs," said Baldwin. He explained that the group feature four-part harmonies, creating a deeply layered symphony of male voices at the tenor, baritone and bass levels. "We've got a really nice lineup." For their Oct. 14 show, the group has a variety of songs lined up. The audience will be treated to popular tunes such as "Unchained Melody," "Stand by Me,"
and "Four Strong Winds"; a Canadian folk tune written by Ian Tyson in the early 1960s. "We do 'Let's Go out to the Ball Game,' 'Mambo Italiano' ... we put music together that we know the audience enjoys," said Godwin. One of Godwin's favourites on the set list is "Bring Him Home," from the musical, Les Misérables. "You know, I've sang in four choirs, and harmony-wise, this one's the best one," said Godwin. He said a female bass singer that may accompany the group during their performance attended one of their rehearsals recently and was blown away when they sang 'Bring Him Home.' "She was actually crying, listening to us," he said. Both Baldwin and Godwin are involved with multiple choirs. They say they enjoy the social aspect of singing in a group. "Being retired, it's a really nice opportunity because I love to sing," said Godwin. "You get out, and you meet people," said Baldwin. "A lot of the people come out and treat it as a social event." The choir has a new director this year in Louise Atchison, as well as a new accompanist, Debrah Protsack. "They are now getting all us men back into singing shape for the upcoming fall and Christmas seasons," Baldwin said. Tickets for the concert are $10 each, available at the door on the night of the show or through Chris Morgan at 613-258-7559.

told her that they don't see kids walking to school; they see them taking their bikes. "Clearly, it's not safe enough for parents, and I think at the very minimum, those lines can be painted on the roads sooner rather than later, connecting the trail as a crosswalk," she said. A member of the public asked the candidates the next question. "I'd like to know what your plans are to encourage transparency with the residents on decisions that are made. Are you prepared to answer the tough questions and have honest and open discussions about how our tax dollars are being spent?" Mayoral candidate and current councillor, Jim Bertram, was first to respond, stating that transparency is an "ongoing piece of business for council." "Our council has done an awful lot over several years to enhance its communication abilities," he said. "What I'd like to do as mayor is move that up a few notches." Bertram said he would regularly write articles for the local newspapers called the 'Mayor's Corner' where he'd give detailed summaries of things that have been decided on. "I'd also be a regular contributor in terms of issues which are coming up, so that people can have some bit of a heads up in terms of what's happening and maybe fill our committee of the whole meetings to a greater extent," he said. Johnston said, "I think, quite often, that we fall dramatically short of the amount of information that we're sharing, so one of my ideas was to create office hours for members of council so that you know when members of council are available publicly to drop-in and ask questions." He added that he wouldn't only like to see more information shared, but for it to be shared directly through quarterly town hall meetings.
"I'd like to see an open town hall meeting every three months, with an open agenda that allows people to ask questions about whatever concerns they have, in any areas that they feel they don't have enough information." Councillor candidate John Barclay believes that there's been a lack of progress with transparency over the last four years with the current council, and that the way in which we communicate can be improved. He also said the municipality's current method of posting meeting alerts in the paper is not sufficient, as it's too easy for important information to be missed. "It's 2018, we can do a much better job at engaging the residents," he said. Barclay called for improved communication that both grabs the public's attention and informs them. "I think we need more opportunities to solicit residents in telling us what they need," said Peckford. "I also think using social media can be really valuable." Cannabis legalization The next question asked the candidates how they feel about the legalization of marijuana and if they would permit cannabis shops to open in Kemptville. Strackerjan said it's a hot topic, which will be the number one task for the upcoming council. "Try being in the military and having that conversation," said the aerospace engineer with the Royal Canadian Air Force. "Personally, the decriminalization and legalization I don't have an issue with. I think we need to look at how we want to address what the shops looks like and where they will be located. I say yes to having them, but it needs to be done in a way that's considerate to the location," she said. Strackerjan believes future cannabis shops should be treated as if they are LCBOs.
Councillor candidate Jim McManaman said he believes the cannabis business should be treated like any other business when legalized, and also compared cannabis shops to LCBOs or Beer Stores, stating that it should be a clean and professional environment. "It's all about information," he added. He had recently attended a cannabis information session in Smiths Falls that was put on by the health unit. "There was great information, and I highly advise people to take advantage of it," he said. In closing, McManaman said he believes in the potential for cannabis shops, "but let's tread carefully and make sure that we do it professionally." Johnston agreed he would be in support of cannabis stores, and that the municipality should start with one at first to see how it goes, and open additional outlets if necessary. He also agreed the LCBO's precedent in terms of the approach to that business would be most appropriate. "Let's start with one, get it right, and then look at more," he said. "Having spent 30 years in a uniform, it's a subject that whether I'm elected or not, I'm going to be involved with," said McCormick, a retired OPP officer. "I think we need to get it right; look at all the facts." Tobin also agreed that cannabis stores should be treated as the businesses that they are. "It certainly is a business to be operated, and the only way it can be operated correctly in the community is through neutral zoning," she said. Tobin identified the police services board as a valuable asset related to this topic, and stressed the importance of working with them, as they have the expertise to get it right. She added that there needs to be a lot more understanding of the process of bringing in a cannabis shop, and that the necessary research and work needs to be completed first, in order to do it properly. Further coverage of North Grenville's all candidates meetings can be found at www.InsideOttawaValley.com.

"I see this being a symbiotic relationship that will benefit Modern Leaf, Fleurish, and most importantly, Canadian women who are interested in cannabis." CELEBRATING THE BRIDES OF YESTERYEAR VINTAGE BRIDAL FASHION SHOW WAS A SOLD-OUT SUCCESS, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column
insideottawavalley.com
The Kemptville District Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary had a great idea for a fundraiser: a Vintage Bridal Tea. In this case, not only the gowns were vintage; one of the brides was, too. The event was sold out a huge success - and I know a few people were sorry they missed it so I'll fill you in on what happened. Months ago, Linda Carnegie started organizing the event and accepting
donations of vintage bridal gowns for the show. St. Johns United Church was chosen as the venue because it has a circular aisle and riser - perfect for a fashion show. It wasn't easy to find models for the gowns, because in many cases women were a lot tinier in days gone by than we are today. Most of the gowns, starting with the 1920s flapperstyle floral number, were modelled on mannequins. A lot of research went into this event. Jenny Thibert (my co-host) and I were provided with a bit of commentary on bridal fashion in each decade, along with a few anecdotes about each dress. Entering the 20s, dancing became a big part of the wedding celebration, and the gowns got shorter as a result. In the Depression-era 30s, gowns were practical and sturdy. They were
made out of florals or solid colours in fabrics that could be worn again for other occasions. There just wasn't extra money to spend on a onetime gown, even for an occasion as special as a wedding. In the 40s and 50s, the crinoline took over. In some cases the dress was wearing the bride and not the other way around. In the 60s wedding gowns took on a number of different styles, depending on the bride's own choice rather than one particular style. Some were a bit more mod, with minidresses hidden under long veils - and white gogo boots to match. Others had a bit of a space-age effect, with metallic touches on the shoulders and belt. The crinoline was still in fashion for the princess-inspired bride, and the simple column dress made an
elegant, clean line. My favourite wedding gown decade was the 70s. Wedding gowns were long and free-flowing without the added bulk of crinoline. Most had long sleeves and high necks, and the daisy pattern that had debuted in the 60s was all the rage in the hippy generation. At the Bridal Tea, one model showed a wedding gown that had been designed and worn by a First Nations bride in the 70s, complete with fringe. The bridesmaid gowns were a blast from the past too, in their couch-cushion florals and starchy organza fabric. I'm amazed at how well the gowns kept their colour and shape after all these years. In honour of the event, I decided to take my own gown out of storage from when I married the Farmer 11 years ago. It's still in style, but I have
no intention of selling it just yet. With five daughters between us, someone may find a use for it yet. My gown from 2007 was strapless off-white with a boned and embroidered bodice and rosette accents on the back and the train. I got it from the bridal salon that was once located at 10 Prescott St. in Kemptville. When they went out of business, I got the dress for about $150. The veil cost more, at $199. I can't get my dress to zip up anymore, as I was pretty tiny when I got married. I got my eldest daughter try it on though, so that was fun. At the Vintage Bridal Tea, we had a vintage model. Norma Fisher whispered in my ear in the dressing room: I feel a bit silly, modelling wedding gowns at my age. I told her, Norma, if I look like you when I'm a senior, I'm going to be
strutting around every chance I get! Norma wriggled easily into her sleek cream-coloured, long-sleeved gown with lace overlay. And that's a good thing because I can't think of anyone else who could have fit into it. She said the seamstress charged her $15 for the dress back in 1951, and she gave her $20. Norma also modelled her own daughter's wedding gown for our charity fashion show. How many 96-year-olds do you know who could do that? Diana Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. Her blog can be found at www.theaccidentalfarmwife.blogspot.com

Jim Dolan - Builder A native of the Kemptville area, Dolan has always had an interest in local sports and promoting them in the community. In the spring of 2006, while a very active member of the North Grenville Curling Club (NGCC), he heard that the club would be hosting the first-ever OVCA Women’s Fall Classic. Dolan wanted to play an integral part in helping to promote competitive women’s curling in Canada, and he saw this as a great opportunity to also promote his hometown and the curling club. He began his promotion of the event by writing articles for local newspapers. In 2008, he became the vice chair and in 2010, he became the first NGCC member to chair the event. Bill White, a friend and fellow NGCC member, agreed to co-chair the event with Dolan. When they assumed their roles of co-chairs of the fall classic, they had three goals: to put on a world-class curling event that would showcase all that is good about ladies curling, to make it an event that sponsors would be proud to be associated with, and to host an event that curling fans would
want to come to our community to witness. Dolan also had a fourth goal, as he saw the event as an opportunity to promote the curling club and the community. In 2017, Dolan was proud to see the event finally become a coast-tocoast competition with the participation of a young team from British Columbia. The Fall Classic has attracted some of the best women curlers in Canada over the years, including five-time World Champion Mary Anne Arsenault of Nova Scotia and the 2017 World Champion Rachel Homan of Ottawa. Dolan is especially proud of the achievements of Lauren Mann, a former member of the North Grenville Curling Club who competes regularly in the Fall Classic. “It’s impossible to attract these world class curlers to the fall classic without the hundreds of North Grenville Curling Club volunteers and local businesses who embrace the event every year so that the players and fans can experience our incredible small town hospitality,” Dolan said. He’s witnessed the event grow from 20 teams in 2006 with a purse of $10,000 to 24 teams in 2017 and a purse of $20,000. The Royal Lepage OVCA Women’s Fall Classic is the largest All-Women’s World Curling Tour event east of Toronto in Canada. “It’s an honour for me to be inducted into this Kemptville Sports Hall of Fame. I find myself joining current members like Sam Gaw and Derek Holmes, a couple of my boyhood idols,” Dolan said. “It makes this evening extra special.”
Two generations of Kemptville Storm Two Kemptville Storm girls hockey teams were also inducted in the Sports Hall of Fame, including the 2006-2007 team, and the 2017-2018 team. In 2006-2007, an energetic group of young women

Kidd (Murdoch), grew up in the South Gower and Kemptville area. While attending North Grenville District High School, Kidd played on competitive teams including basketball and volleyball, but especially excelled in track and field as a javelin thrower. Kidd won at the LGSSAA (Leeds and Grenville Secondary Schools Athletic Association) championships and also at the provincial level at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations). At the community level, Kidd was part of the first organized girls’ hockey team from Kemptville, called the Mountain Mets. The team later became known as the Kemptville Home Hardware Team. During this time, she played softball and was selected to represent Ontario at the 1977 Canada Games in Newfoundland, where she won a bronze medal. Two years later, Kidd was on the gold medal-winning team of the Ontario Junior Softball Championships. Her competitive sports career continued at Queen’s University where she played both ice and field hockey, winning two Canadian University titles in each. It was at this time that she also became a cycling enthusiast. Following her graduation, Kidd became an RCMP officer. During her training, she ran 800 kilometres. At this time Kidd ran her first marathon and continued with her cycling, occasionally biking home to South Gower from Toronto. She would also bike through New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. “To see all you in here, I think it’s wonderful that Kemptville is where I started my athletic adventures in high school,” Kidd said. “It was here where the love and support through sports helped me through any difficulties in life.” She said her love of
sport is about supporting your team mates and being a part of something that is bigger than yourself. “It’s bigger than who I am, and it makes me a better person,” she said. In 1984, Kidd was struck by a vehicle while biking. She fractured her back and suffered a coma, as well as a concussion. She credits her athletic training with helping her through this difficult recovery. Now retired, Kidd lives near Renfrew and golfs six days a week, and participates in many fundraising tournaments including those for Beth Donovan Hospice and Kemptville and District Home Support. She also swims, curls, and three years ago she trained for a power lifting event.
represented Kemptville as the Midget C Hockey Team. Although the team roster only included eleven players and one goalie, the girls worked hard both on and off the ice. They dedicated themselves to attending all practices and dry-land training sessions, and saw results in games competing against teams with more than 16 players. During that season, the team won the Pembroke Regional Silver Stick Championship, creating a record for having no goals scored against them during the tournament. This accomplishment resulted in an invitation back to the Silver Stick 50th Anniversary celebration, the International Silver Stick tournament in Sarnia, and the provincial championships. The team members are as follows: Jen Arcand, Megan Colwell, Chelsey Drew, Stephanie Henry, Meghan Johnson (Giesbrecht), Kim Judge, Megan Wright (Lafave), Cindy Spence, Jessica Churchill (Spence), Ashley Stephenson, Donna Marie Cooper (Tessier) and Brina Whitley. Members of team management: Pete Giesbrecht (head coach), Dale Lafave (assistant coach), Angie Kirk (assistant coach/ goalie coach/trainer), Kathy Lafave (co-manager), Patsy Stephenson (comanager), Graham Curryer (fitness coach) and Margaret Tessier (trainer). The 2017-2018 season for the Kemptville Storm girls hockey team was outstanding, with 46 wins, seven ties and only five losses. The team was crowned the OWHA Provincial Champions and ODWHA League Champions. Along the way, they were also first overall in regular season play across Ontario. In tournament play, the team took the gold in both the Nepean and Gloucester tournaments as well as silver in Oshawa and bronze in Belleville. Along with their season record, the team finished with 180 goals and only 53 against. The team roster is as follows: Taylor Beggs, Sam Benoit, Avery Brown, Rhys Brown, Kaitlyn Dawson, Laura Dickson, Emily Houston, Madeline Langevin, Paige Legault, Ashley

AN UNEASY TRADE VICTORY Well we won ... didn't we? Canada's new free trade deal with Mexico and the United States is, well, done, we can at least say that. The deal was reportedly reached just a few hours short of the clock striking midnight this past Sunday, Sept. 30. It could not have come at a more dicey time - less than 12 hours later, Quebecers were waking up and heading to the polls. You can't make this stuff up, folks. Parti QuĂŠbĂŠcois leader Jean-Francois Lisee wasted no time in posting a video online condemning the pact - essentially saying that Quebec's dairy farmers had been thrown under the bus in exchange for saving Ontario's auto industry. The new deal (NAFTA is dead, long live USMCA?) does do one important thing immediately - it avoids a prolonged trade war. There will be no Brexit moment here. Free trade will still cross both borders. But there is one important sticking point. The tariffs on steel are still, as of this writing, still on, which has a negative impact on local businesses, like Central Wire in Perth. Those tariffs need to come down, and soon. (Negotiations continue there.) Now, as for opening up the dairy industry, it's complicated. Yes, you may be able to get access to more American milk, and prices may go down. That's what competition does. (And somewhere, you just know that Maxime Bernier is smirking, eyes twinkling, looking at his old leader, Andrew Scheer, thinking, "I told you so!" It was dairy farmers, many from his own Quebec, that cost him the Conservative Party leadership to Scheer by a narrow margin.) And was Canada's stand on supply management, protecting Canadian farms, not a deal-breaker? Apparently not. But in Lanark County, we are home to cattle and dairy farming. These are family businesses. These are our neighbours. Can the family farm compete against big American agri-businesses, who already produce too much milk as it is? The feds are promising compensation - but to what amount? And will it be enough to save the family farm? And do the Americans still ply their dairy farmers with subsidies? On the other hand, the Ontario economy has been helped, knowing that the auto industry will now not close up shop and head back home to Detroit. Dealing with The Donald is not easy. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland deserves plaudits (and a well deserved few days off) having to negotiate a deal that was never going to please everyone, dealing with an American side representing a mercurial president. (Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the deal "no easy feat." That's being diplomatic, sir.) There are also improved labour and environmental standards in the accord, and our cultural industries remain protected. The details are still to come. It may not be all things to all people - a relief to some, a headache to others. But we have a deal. And the threat of a job-killing trade war has lifted.

WHO WE ARE
VACATION MODE FOR A FEW WEEKS NEWFOUNDLAND HOSPITALITY AT ITS BEST, WRITES LAURIE WEIR LAURIE WEIR Column
I'm off for a few weeks to enjoy some much-needed time away before election night, so I won't be back in the office until then. We're heading east for a while to visit with some of Sweet Baby's siblings. Lexi will be at her favourite "spaw" and Mom is looking after Jack-O. It will be fun to meet his family, finally. He's the youngest of nine, so there are many people to meet. I'm a little in awe of this Newfoundland hospitality, though. I was budgeting for hotel accommodations and a car rental. "Don't be silly," Sweet Baby said. "We're staying with my sisters." "No way," I said. "We
can't impose like that. It's not right." "No babe," he said. "It's not right if we don't stay with them!" A phone conversation with one of his sisters confirmed that we are indeed, not staying at any hotel. OK, well that's one expense we won't incur. Awesome. "What about a car? We'll need to rent one," I said. "No, they have lots of cars," Sweet Baby said. "We can just borrow one." "You've got to be kidding me?" The last time I "borrowed" a car I wrapped it around a tree. That was a 1979 T-Bird my mother's and no, I haven't borrowed her car since 1982. That's a long time for my mother to hold a grudge, but I get it. "My sister has a Mustang," he said, a grin splitting his face. He knows that's my weakness. I have had - and wrecked! - a Mustang ... but I also have savoured and loved them. (I've had five: a 1966 [3-
speed coupe, hardtop red!], 1980, 1986, 1994 [wrecked], and a 1996.) I love them because we are the same age. "So borrowing a car won't be an issue?" "No, it won't be," he assured me. Sweet Baby also tells me that there is a cabin in the woods where we can hang out for a bit, but there is no electricity. Excellent, it will be a perfect vacation. I can't think of a better place to spend our first anniversary. Laurie Weir is the news editor for the Smiths Falls Record News and the Perth Courier. She and Sweet Baby are owned by a GSD, Lexi, and a rescue cat, Jack. She can be reached at ljweir@metroland.com but not until Oct. 22

ELECTION
9
Editor's note: Due to an error, another profile ran in place of Merrickville-Wolford councillor candidate Mike Cameron's in our election section in the Sept. 27 issue. His profile appears here in its entirety. We regret the error and any inconvenience it may have caused. Why I want to run: I am running in this election because I believe that I can bring positive change to our communities and provide a common sense approach to the daily decision making of the municipality. Over the past four years, I believe that the council hasn't lived up to its obligations to the community - and especially, in the last couple of years with regards to the ongoing investigations within
town hall. In my opinion, this has cast a shadow over the community. Mike Cameron Discussions have been heard about an economic development strategy to run water and sewer to the old Grenville Casting site to develop a business park. I am concerned that this would impose upon the residents of Wolford and Merrickville a tax increase that would be overwhelming in addition to our already high tax rate. My top priority is: Service, service, service. Being a small rural farming municipality with limited resources our focus
should be striving to deliver and maintain a high standard of service that is expected and deserved by our taxpayers. My focus is the community of Wolford. I would challenge council to improve services and communications delivered to its residents ensure that we have appropriate amount of staffing in all departments to provide the services residents require ensure that our tax dollars are spent responsibly champion a friendly environment to grow both rural and village businesses, it is through our rural community that we ensure our future. Merrickville-Wolford is a unique and vibrant Victorian village on the Rideau Canal. Let's keep it that way.

CAR ACCIDENT LEADS TO PLANNED POWER OUTAGE IN KEMPTVILLE PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com
R0013021901
More than 5,000 North Grenville residents were affected by a planned power outage which Hydro One is now reporting was the result of a motor vehicle accident on Concession Road in Kemptville. An anonymously submitted photo of a damaged hydro pole on Concession Road, just past Hurd Street, shows the top half of the pole suspended in the air, cables still attached, with the bottom half missing. The person who took the pho-
to at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 30 also reported that a car was towed out of the nearby ditch earlier that morning, after 8 a.m. The submitter also claimed to have revisited the site at 11:30 a.m., when about eight Hydro One trucks were lined up, working on the damaged pole. The speed limit on the subject portion of Concession Road is 50km/h. Hydro One initiated a planned power outage at approximately 1 p.m. on Sept. 30 to replace to hydro pole. Power has since been fully restored in Kemptville.

Life can be so unfair. We've all felt that at times, whether reacting to global news, local tragedy or personal setbacks. What keeps us going is our collective humanity knowing that whatever happens we are not alone, there will always be some neighbor, friend or agency to lend support. Take inspiration from Roya Shams, one of the remarkable Afghan girls we hear about who defy the Taliban and risk their lives to further their education. Imagine the fortitude it must have taken to flee her homeland at 16 years of age, put her safety in the hands of strangers and adapt to an entirely different culture. She'll be in Perth on Monday, Oct. 15 to give a free talk to the public - in an interview format - about her transition from a burka-wearing repressed teenager to an ardent activist for women's rights and girls' education. There is both tragedy and inspiration in this tale. Please join us on Monday, Oct. 15 to hear her incredible tale, being presented by the Perth & District chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) as part of a speaker series held at the Perth Royal Canadian Legion (26 Beckwith Street East, Perth, K7H 1B5). Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; donations from nonmembers would be appreciated. Submitted by Mary Rothfels, Canadian Federation of University Women, Perth and District chapter

THERE ARE MANY HELPFUL TIPS FOR TRAVEL, JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE Column
I don't know who coined the oft-uttered phrase "practice makes perfect?" I'm sure it applies in certain cases, but definitely not in some situations. Obviously there are things in life you can't practice for! On the other hand you can almost always prepare for a given set of circumstances. If you know how to prepare that is! One good example is flying. There are a number of dos and don'ts to consider when you are planning to take to the air, especially if you are embarking on a long journey. My wife Kathleen retired recently and we are currently preparing for a European vacation with good friends and longtime travel companions. Because we're experienced travellers we have developed a routine which, when it comes to
long distance travel, is vital. Start with lists of what you know you have to take with you. Passports, credit cards, foreign currency and any prescription medications should be kept on your person or in a readily accessible container, preferably your handbag or carry-on case. Don't put prescription meds in checked baggage which travels in the aircraft cargo hold. If your bag(s) don't show up at the other end and they contain vital materials you will have a very bad start to your trip! Flying is the most important part of any long haul journey which makes it especially important that you plan what and how much to take with you and where to pack important items such as a change of clothes. Speaking from personal experience I can tell you that there is nothing worse than arriving overseas only to discover that your checked bags haven't followed you. I don't want to alarm anyone. Lost luggage is a relatively rare occurrence. But it does happen which makes being prepared particularly important. To prevent such an occurrence, here's my advice. Kathy and I take carry-on bags large enough to hold a change of clothing (or two), along with extra socks and under garments. Make

KNOWING THE DOS AND DON'TS OF FLYING IS VITAL
sure your carry-on also contains vital travel documents. Don't over pack! Mixing and matching items of clothing means you can diminish the load you originally intended to carry. Hauling heavy suitcases through airports, train stations, up and down staircases and elevators and along busy sidewalks is murder. When flying we prefer to prebook our seats so we don't get caught in the airline seat shuffle. Talk to you travel agent about the best available options. There's nothing wrong with being health conscious when you're flying either. Nobody wants to catch a cold, flu bug or another virus while jetting to their destination. Oddly the aircraft washroom isn't as dirty as the areas in and around your seat. Germaphobes will tell you that the tray table at your seat harbours more germs than any other part of the aircraft. Carry wipes (containing at least 62 per cent alcohol) and use them to sanitize any surface your hands are likely to contact. To be totally honest the worst part of flying for me is airports. Some are better than others but in the post 9/11 world security checks and more security checks means the worst part of flying is actually getting to the aircraft. It's all very necessary of course. But in my experience actually boarding the plane and flying to your destination is usually the least problematic part of travel today.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

UCDSB MARKS ORANGE SHIRT DAY The Upper Canada District School Board was a sea of orange Oct. 1 as students and staff from across our vast district wear orange shirts to recognize Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is officially on Sept. 30 and is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School (1891-1981). It grew out of an account from residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, who told her story of how her new orange shirt was taken from her on the first day of school at the Mission. Since 2013, Webstad's story has become an opportunity to further the discussion on all aspects of the residential school experience and provides a focus for public recognition in Canada about a dark and difficult period in our national history. "Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for our teachers, students and staff to openly recognize the injustices that happened in resi-

Today, classrooms will be talking about the significance of Orange Shirt Day and engaging in learning activities. We want our students to understand that we all belong, we all matter and to carry that message with them each day, throughout their lives,
not just on this day," said Superintendent of Schools and Indigenous Education, Jodie Barrett. The date for Orange Shirt Day was chosen because of its historical significance. This was the time of year that Indigenous children were taken from their homes to attend residential schools operated by the federal
government. In the present day, the date is now an opportunity for Indigenous peoples, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

OPINION
FATHER WENT ALONG WITH THIS WARMING FALL FAMILY TRADITION STORY OF JOAN OF ARC ETCHED IN HER MEMORY, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
Mother was never at a loss when it came time to get the family together for a bit of fun. So we celebrated every holiday, even if we didn't have the remotest connection to it. That included Lincoln's birthday, St. John The Baptiste Day, the Twelfth of July. At this time of year, Mother was able to work around the sad story of
Joan of Arc through the simple act of the burning of the fall leaves. Of course, it was called "The Burning of the Leaves Day," but I knew there would be a heavy emphasis on the Joan of Arc story, which caused me no end of grief. I hated the story I knew was coming with the burning of the leaves, but once we got that out of the way, we got down to the serious business of watching the mountain of leaves go up in smoke. It took us a period of several days, and sometimes most of a week for what we called "The Burning at the Stake Night." I called it The Burning of the Stake Night, which I thought was more humane, as I pictured the young French saint being
tied to a stake and going up in flames. But we had to listen to the story before we actually lit the pile of leaves, which Emerson said took all the fun out of the evening. To get ready, we raked mountains of leaves into a huge mound in the centre of the front yard. This always took place on a Saturday, and we had to have the pile well away from the barns and the old log house, or the whole place could go up in flames. Father also insisted we burn a small pile at a time, so that the flames wouldn't get out of hand. Once we got the Joan of Arc story out of the way, we would settle down to enjoy the spectacle before us. We
each would have a long slim piece of green wood for what I considered the most fun of the entire evening. Mother would have placed a tin plate of sliced pieces of back bacon, on the seat of a kitchen chair, and these we threaded onto the stick, and with the bacon fat sizzling into the fire, we'd watch the pieces cook into a golden brown ... crisp and delicious morsels to pop into our mouths when they were cool enough to eat. Over the evening we would go through a plate full of bacon pieces. It would take at least two hours to work through the mound of leaves, and then Mother would take her harmonica out of her apron pocket, and we'd all sing the songs we knew so well.
Long after the last ember had died down, we would stay on the logs we had used as benches and watch Father take a pail and fill it from the watering trough and douse what was left of the burning leaves. For days our clothes would smell of burning leaves. We wouldn't be wearing our school clothes, so we didn't carry the odour off the farm. But I loved the smell of the bonfire, and I could never pass the back door where our clothes hung on a nail, without pressing my nose into the folds of whatever I had worn the night we had burned the leaves. Father didn't think much of the effort we went to. In his day, he would tell us, the leaves were left where they
had fallen. The snow would cover them over the winter, and grass would grow right on top of them. But he went along with yet another idea of Mother's that she brought to the farm at Northcote. My sister Audrey said to him, it was the line of least resistance. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books?
