WHY VOTE FOR TRUSTEES? School board trustees hold the only democratically elected office that is solely responsible for education. A trustee is responsible for identifying the needs and priorities of their community and for ensuring these are considered in the decisions that result in practical educational opportunities for students. It is the local trustee who makes sure that the community has a direct way to express its views on vital education decisions that affect our day-to-day lives. You have the right to vote for who represents you in these important matters. WHO CAN VOTE? To vote in a school board election in Ontario, you must be aged 18 or older and be a Canadian citizen. If you are a resident of a municipality, you are eligible to vote for school trustee. If you are the owner or tenant (or spouse of an owner or tenant) of residential property in a municipality, you are eligible to vote for school trustee. Note: School boards can cover large areas of the province and include many municipalities. You are only allowed to vote for the same school board once. If you are eligible to vote in a municipality because you are the owner or tenant (or spouse of an owner or tenant) of a commercial property there, you are not eligible to vote for school trustee. WHAT DO TRUSTEES DO? School board trustees are the members of a school board. They are locallyelected representatives of the public, and they are the community’s advocate for public education. They are required to carry out their responsibilities in a manner that assists the board in fulfilling its duties under the Education Act. A trustee’s role is to maintain a focus on student achievement, well-being and equity and to participate in making decisions that benefit the board’s entire jurisdiction while representing the interests of their constituents. Trustees must also communicate the views and decisions of the board back to their constituents. A trustee is responsible for identifying the needs and priorities of their community and for ensuring these are considered in the decisions that result in practical educational opportunities for students. In doing so, trustees must consider conflicting interests and values. A trustee must do this in collaboration with the other members of the school board by developing policies that work for all students, and ensuring they are implemented effectively. The stories that make up our local history in North Grenville are priceless, but if you were to pay for them, it would be owed to the ongoing volunteer work of the North Grenville Historical Society. Approximately $3,700 was raised for the North Grenville Historical Society (NGHS) through their fundraising Harvest Dinner, held Sept. 29 at the North Grenville Curling Club. Society member Ron Gould said it was the largest and most successful fundraising event the society has conducted to date, with 126 tickets sold. Local businesses and individuals contributed donations to the generous meal and the silent auction table. Despite this outpouring of support from the community, the society still struggles to continue its vital work preserving historical items, archiving the information, and telling the ever-so-cherished stories of North Grenville's past. Event host and local historian David Shanahan said the society gets about three to four inquiries every week from people who want to know more about their family or their property.
"In most cases, we can help them with that, because of the materials that have been passed on to us in the past," he said. "If we can keep that going, then we're doing our duty for the future; we're actually creating heritage that people will value in later years." Director of archives, Amanda Gould, volunteers her time to the society along with the other board members. After North Grenville's municipal candidates spoke about the importance of local history and heritage at the Sept. 29 dinner, Gould stated that she, too, is campaigning for the community's ongoing support. "We have no official relationship with the municipality other than that we are tenants," she said. "We pay rent to the municipality to occupy the upstairs space at 15 Water Street; that's that rather decrepit, old building behind the lovely new library." Gould explained that the society is a distinct entity, run entirely on a volunteer-basis, which is not affiliated with municipal government whatsoever, operating with a mandate under the Ontario Historical So-

PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The final all candidates meeting for North Grenville was held at the Bishops Mills Community Hall on Oct. 10. Eleven of 12 municipal candidates attended the meeting, moderated by Tom Graham of TD Graham and Associates. Questions asked at the meeting were directed to two candidates of choice by the questioner, and each candidate had one minute to respond. The first topic explored the relationship between the mayor and councillors as a team, and asked the candidates what skills they would bring to maintain a positive and productive team. New council candidate Jim McManaman said that for his day-to-day job as a business consultant, he goes into businesses and usually finds that their biggest problem is with communication between management and staff. "Communication with staff is an absolute for me, and I have to do it every day. I've trained a lot in that area," he said. McManaman said he's owned five businesses over the last 32 years. He added that he has made a point of talking to each of the mayoral and council candidates to see what their personalities are like, and he believes that he could work well with all of them. Mayoral candidate Nancy Peck-

ford said her professional life has been defined by the opportunity to find common ground with people from different political parties, with different strengths, and different viewpoints. "Whatever the configuration of a council that I would lead, I would welcome and embrace the opportunity to really find shared goals, but also to do so in a way that reflects the needs of the community," she said. "I am running so that we have a strong mandate from you - not just in Kemptville, but across our municipality which includes every single rural hamlet. We take our cues from you, and we need to calibrate and co-ordinate a council that is deeply engaged in conversation with you all the time." Peckford added that dialogue can be incredible productive, and that she doesn't think there's enough of it currently in the municipality. The second question asked what the candidates think can be done in North Grenville to address climate change. "Climate change is a very, very hard question," said current councillor and mayoral candidate, Jim Bertram. "Certainly not one that I understand the limits of." He explained that council needs to look into what the immediate things are that can be done within the limits of the resources that they have. He also said council can refer to other government levels to see what can be done.
"I would identify what we can do and then find the resources that might be available to do it," he concluded. Council candidate, Deron Johnston said he is a member of the Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative, which looks for projects to invest in and can potentially partner with the municipality to take advantage of opportunities that exist, especially in solar energy. "There are opportunities out there for us to save on our current energy costs, and to partner with private industries," he said. "From now on, what I would like to see is for everything we do to be viewed with an environmental impact lens." The next questions asked what the candidates' plans would be for implementing curbside pickup of compost and/or yard waste. Incumbent mayoral hopeful David Gordon said that through his canvassing, he's heard many residents express their desire for this type of service. He added that five years ago, residents didn't want it, but things have changed, and it's now a significant priority. "I think the time has come to seriously look at this question and to see if it can be done practically under our budget constraints," he said. Peckford agreed that compost pickup is a top priority of residents she's spoken with, and said organic composting is generally top-of-mind for both rural populations and in Kemptville. "There are some really innovative and affordable community composting options that we can invest in and use best practices for from other See BISHOPS, page 7

BISHOPS MILLS HEARD CANDIDATES' VIEWS ON CLIMATE CHANGE, COMPOSTING and that he's worked with detachments' budgets managing millions of dollars per year, presenting budgets on behalf of detachments and giving detailed breakdowns of where funds go. "I can bring that to the table every year when they prepare the municipal budget and I'd be happy to offer my assistance," he said. Another new face in the council race, Kristin Strackerjan, said numbers don't scare her. "They do scare a lot of people, but I have a pretty solid math and science background, so I can bring that to the table," she said. "Looking at a budget is not very daunting to me. My professional experience has given me plenty of opportunities to do business planning, manage budgets, and do last-minute cost assessments and procurements." Strackerjan said she's been involved with everything from multimillion-dollar projects to her current role, leading a unit where she is fully responsible for business planning for the entire year. "I understand fiscal restraints and what it means to have to spend within a certain fiscal year," she said. "I have a lot of those tools already in my tool kit to be able to manage it." Strackerjan added that she's looked at the current proposed municipal budget, and there's a lot of ways to look at how the numbers translate into real things that the community needs.

communities that are driven by local residents but with some support from the municipality," she said. She added that the need to improve waste pickup services is crucial, especially in light of the 12-point property tax increase. The fourth question asked how candidates would deal with a vacant mayoral position if the elected mayor was unable to fulfill their term. Incumbent councillor Barb Tobin said she would do the same as she did the previous term, and look at all her options, which includes the opportunity for the deputy mayor to take the position, at least temporarily. "We were used as an example in the last term when we had a member that had to leave his position and we chose to do it by having someone come and do interviews with us, and give them questions so we got a feel of their understanding of the municipality," she said. Tobin said this solution is one way that she'd consider resolving such an issue again, but that she would do the necessary homework to make sure the right move is being made. "It always faces you when the time comes, what that decision would be and under what circumstances you may have to play with at that time," she concluded. Johnston said the person would have to be someone that the rest of council could work with, and that he would like to see the deputy mayor assume the mayoral role, at least temporarily, while council decides whether they would like to have a byelection or take the person who came next by number of votes in the mayoral race. "I do not believe in an appointment process that is not based on the democracy that put the people in place that are there," he said. "Democracy and your vote should always be respected." Next, candidates were asked what efforts they would take to preserve and protect North Grenville's aquifer, in light of the fact that 75 per cent of residents get their water out of the ground. Gordon noted Kemptville is currently well-utilized when it comes to water, and that rural areas are under the Nepean aquifer, which is regulated by the province. "Our water is safe and tested by the health board twice a year, so I think at this point in time, we are very fortunate with the water we have, because there's other places in Ontario that don't have the water that we have," he said. New council candidate Doreen O'Sullivan said that she knows that Kemptville has a large aquifer which will be abundant until 2034, but that we should always be mindful of our resources. "This is really important,
whether it's being mindful of the energy we use, or the waste we produce," she said. "I think we need to be mindful of water all the time and we need to be respectful and not waste water." The next question explored the issue of small businesses struggling in rural communities that do not have access to internet. "All of you have expressed interest in small businesses, however, in my point of view as a commuter, it would benefit us all to look into extra resources and innovative solutions to our internet issues," stated the questioner. "I'm here because it's severely lacking, and it would allow more of us to work from home." John Barclay, council hopeful, said that he works from home, and agreed that improved internet access is desperately needed. "To release pressure on (County Road) 43, have more time with your family, and encourage local business, working from home is the way to the future," he said. He added that initiatives on the regional, provincial, and national stage aren't reaching rural communities, and that the municipality needs to do a better job and send representatives to advocate for rural communities and increase broadband. Incumbent councillor Frank Onasanya stated while he was canvassing in Burritts Rapids, he heard many residents express this concern. He said he has spoken with Cogeco to find out what can be done in an attempt to improve broadband. "They are working on this as I speak, and I am hoping to get some information back from them soon," he said. The next question asked candidates about the financial background that they would each contribute to the council table. New council candidate and former OPP officer, Craig McCormick, said that being responsible as an operational sergeant for the Kemptville detachment has involved him with budget preparations. He explained that provincial budgets are very strict,

Another municipal election is upon us. It's a time when you get to have your say about who you want to represent you on your town or township's council. On average, municipal election voter turnout tends to be lower than the turnout for federal or provincial elections. According to Elections Canada, 66.1 per cent of people voted in the 2015 federal election - the highest turnout since 1993. Fiftyeight per cent voted in the 2018 provincial election held earlier this year. Now compare those numbers with the average voter turnout across Ontario, reported by the Association of Municipalities Ontario, in the last municipal election held in 2014, where only 43.12 per cent of voters in Ontario showed up at the polls. In Lanark County, Smiths Falls and Mississippi Mills had the highest voter turn out during the last municipal election both seeing 53 per cent of their electorate casting a ballot. The lowest voter turnout was observed in Beckwith, where only 23 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot. To me, this is backwards. Arguably, municipal councillors and mayors have the most direct impact on you in your day-today life. If you're frustrated
about pot holes, a certain bridge not being repaired, or concerned about the cleanliness of your local park - all issues within the purview of your municipality - can be brought to your local council. While municipal politics might light up social media after issues from meetings have been reported by various media outlets, not many people seem interested to come out and sit in the council chambers while contentious issues are being discussed. Watching the meetings broadcast on television is also a good way to understand what's going within in your municipality's council. Being an informed voter is important. As someone who sits at town council and committee meetings each and every week, there is nothing better than watching your elected officials debate inperson to help you understand who you've elected to represent you, and whether or not they actually speak to your values. Many people will gripe online (and in person) about what's going on in their municipality, but how many of them will actually vote? If you don't vote, you don't have a right to complain. Many municipalities now offer the convenience of telephone and Internet voting. If you've got time to check your email or Facebook, or call up a friend, you've got time to vote. Monday, Oct. 22, is your chance to tell your elected officials what you think. If you haven't registered to vote, please do. You live in a democracy. This is your chance to tell your current, and prospective elected officials, what you think of them. Evelyn Harford is a reporter with the Smiths Falls Record News. WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY ONTARIO NEEDS TO ACT NOW ON CLIMATE CRISIS DEAR EDITOR:
Ninety-one scientists from 40 countries recently released papers further warning about our planet's trajectory toward a climate crisis as soon as 2040. The U.N. report is based on approximately 6,000 studies and its conclusion is dire. These predicted - as opposed to assumed - planet-altering life results are only 22 years away. These are not theories that may come about in some unforeseen distant future. We are only seeing and experiencing the opening acts; the appetizer. Meanwhile, in Ontario, Premier Doug Ford argues that a price on carbon contributing pollutants is just a tax that does nothing to combat the contributions that steer us directly toward droughts, fires, floods, crop failures and eventual starvation, and, huge numbers of climate refu-
gees that will be the results. It wouldn't be so potentially damaging to our future if Ford and his supporters had a workable, sensible alternative course of action before they publicly trash and dispose of any existing ideas. And responding on gut feelings or hunches with the stakes being so high, is not acceptable from any high-ranking politician. And, if his negative message is not enough in Ontario, like a zealot on pep-pills, he is crusading his beliefs to like-minded Canadian politicians. Ford is against any seemingly sensible actions that may help to mitigate, lessen, or delay what scientific findings have concluded, and in doing so, is sabotaging Canada's commitment to the 2015 Paris Accord. This leaves me wondering, if, he has truly seen the light, or, if he has been blinded by the light. His message and policies have been recently reflected in the lower price of gasoline, which
has dropped to about $1.16 per litre and, in a buck-abeer. I hope this does not encourage more people to run out and buy more, and bigger, gas-guzzling vehicles from SUVs and earth-shaking pickups in which to drive to the local supermarket for that loaf of bread and to that beer store for that elusive buck-a-beer; this will only speed-up the rendezvous with calamity. Ford's actions are proof of what occurs when one decides to forgo suppleness in one's thinking for more rigid, simpler, and less complicated thoughts that are easier to sell. As the old line goes, "you can pay me now, or, you can pay later" with heavy interest.

ciety. She described the historical society's interests and concerns as compatible to those of the North Grenville Heritage Advisory Committee - a committee of council - in terms of the built heritage assets in the community and all of the surrounding hamlets. "We're open Tuesday mornings, thanks to volunteer efforts, so that members of the public and people visiting from far away who have roots here can research and learn about their ancestors who settled here." Gould said the society's volunteers provide information for those interested in their local genealogy, the history of their properties, or the history of the properties they are considering investing in when they look at neighbourhoods in North Grenville. Aside from studying artifacts, doing research, and publishing their findings, there is one more thing that volunteers at the society do to preserve the community's history that is becoming increasingly pressing with societal expectations of readily available, digitized information. "We need to maintain a database where the archival documents and artifacts within our collection are accessible," said Gould. "We don't necessarily know where everything is on the shelf. We need to know where it came from, who donated it, when its time period was, and how it's associated with North Grenville - otherwise, a piece of paper sitting in a box or a drum sitting on a shelf isn't much use to anybody." Gould explained that the pressure to archive the society's items calls for updated software and hardware, as well as more helping hands. The society host-
ed two interns through the Young Canada Works in Heritage program this summer, who were working to archive information when they experienced a critical computer hardware failure at the society. "We were able to salvage ev-
erything, but it's that sort of thing that endangers all of the good work that my volunteers do," said Gould. The proceeds from the Harvest Dinner supported the purchase of new hardware for the database, so the contents of the
society's collection can be made accessible to the public. The NGHS hosts fundraising events throughout the year as well as free, informative events that explore their fascinating findings. Recently, one member conducted a year-long investiga-

AMENDED 2018 BUDGET TO COUNCIL PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com After a five-month review and consultation process with municipal staff and council members, the Old Town Kemptville BIA (Business Improvement Area) has resubmitted their 2018 budget. Previously reduced by council from $25,500 to $18,976 in May, the budget has since been a topic of much deliberation on the financial structures of BIAs in Ontario and the relationship between the municipality and the BIA, which is a committee of council in North Grenville. Stephen Bent, Old Town Kemptville BIA treasurer and Andrew Beveridge, financial volunteer with the BIA, referred to the standards of the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) on what executive directors are typically paid in other BIAs across Ontario before proposing an increase in the budget's management fees, which are paid to the executive director. Their research shows that on average, remuneration for BIA executive directors is $17,910 on a part-time basis and
$57,654 on a full-time basis. The amendment requested was for the BIA's management fees to be increased to $20,510. Bent said the previous remuneration for the executive director was too low, and that it failed to attract interest to the role. "This ensures that we have qualified individuals to better serve both the business members and support our volunteer board members," he said. "This salary will hopefully help to retain great staff members that will fulfill the role of the staffed executive director." When the BIA initially presented their 2018 budget in May, council recommended that the requested amount for management fees be reduced to $13,750, that the Pop-Up Shop funding of $1,695 be cancelled, and that a reserve be established for more than $8,000 in remaining funds. Bent explained that the amended budget now shows the management fees back up to the originally requested $20,510, the $1,695 for Pop-Up Shop funding is still cancelled, and $1,804 is left, to be placed in reserve. North Grenville chief administrative officer Brian Carré said that staff discussed many items with the BIA during their meeting, and that they continue to have open dialogue with them. The management fees line item was reinstated to $20,510, and a resolution to pass the bylaw to levy 2018 taxes to the BIA was carried.

Retirees Eager to † Try New Hearing Aid A new award winning hearing aid is now available for retirees!‡ It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!
At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the strain that
effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

WICK WITCH SUPPORTS LANARK COUNTY INTERVAL HOUSE Aultman. According to LCIH public education co-ordinator Brianne Luckasavitch, the funds will be put toward the organization's second stage housing project in Carleton Place, which kicked off in 2017 with the donation of a property by Tiree/Duncan McNaughton. The second stage housing model allows abused women and their children to move on from a first stage or crisis shelter and into affordable housing for up to a year. Luckasavitch said Interval House is tackling the project on its own and in addition to Tiree's support, the Rotary Club of Carleton Place and Mississippi Mills has committed $25,000 over five years and the Town of Carleton Place pledged $10,000. The organization has also secured a $104,500
ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com Wick Witch Bath & Candle Co.'s coven of mystical supporters recently helped raise $3,000 for Lanark County Interval House (LCIH). The funds were raised through Wick Witch's annual VIP Fall PreLaunch Party held at their Merrickville location Friday, Sept. 21. All proceeds from the tickets sold were donated to LCIH. Each year, the business selects a different local charity to benefit from ticket sales. "With a shop that employs all women are our client base being 95 per cent women, we thought it was important to support a cause for women, especially one that is so vital and underfunded," noted Wick Witch owner Lianne Kulp-
Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to help with renovations. "We have corporate sponsors and support from the community. There's no government funding at all to it," she explained. " ... It's pieces like this (Wick Witch donation) that are really helping for that housing." Local businesses and organizations have also taken on the sponsorship of furnishing units. "A lot are naming their unit after people they know that have been in abusive relationships," Luckasavitch stated. "After a year, when the women leave and transition out, they get to take the dishes, the sheets, everything and so we'll furnish the units again." Occupancy is expected to take place this fall. With files from Tara Gesner
Ashley Kulp/Metroland Lanark County Interval House's second stage housing project received a boost Sept. 27 with a $3,000 donation courtesy of Wick Witch Candle & Bath Co. in Merrickville. Wick Witch donated full proceeds of tickets sold for their VIP Fall Pre-Launch party Sept. 21. PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Perhaps the most wondrous marker for the start of the holiday season and a popular Christmas tradition for many, the CP Holiday Train will make its annual stops in local communities including Merrickville, Smiths Falls, and Perth this year on Wednesday, Nov. 28. 2018 marks 20 years of the Holiday Train's visits to communities across Canada and the United States in an effort to support the local food banks. The lit-up locomotive will start its route in Montreal on Nov. 25 with Sam Roberts Band entertaining the crowds along the way. The performers will switch-out on Nov. 27, with artists Terri Clark, Sierra Noble and Kelly Prescott taking over as the train enters Ontario. Nov. 28's stops are scheduled as follows: Finch at 2:30 p.m., Merrickville at 4:45 p.m., Smiths Falls at 6:20 p.m., Perth

Performers include Terri Clark, Sierra Noble and Kelly Prescott. Pictured, singer Emma-Lee opened for Colin James during the train's visit to Merrickville last November. at 7:40 p.m., and Hamilton at 7:45 p.m. The route will wrap-up in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia on Dec. 18. "On behalf of the 13,000strong family here at CP, it is my great pleasure to kick off the 20th tour of the CP Holiday Train," said Keith Creel, CP's president and chief executive officer. "It is a privilege for CP to be able to run a program like this and connect with so many communities across our net-
work. I want to personally thank each individual who has made a donation over the past 20 years - your collective efforts have made the Holiday Train a huge success for two decades." Each event is free of charge. Instead of paying admission, attendees are encouraged to practice generosity as the holiday season approaches, opening their cupboards and wallets to address hunger needs in their communities. At every stop, the train will be collecting dona-
tions to ensure that the less fortunate are well-stocked with healthy food for the coming cold months. The full schedule of all the train's stops across Canada, including the musical lineup, is available at www.cpr.ca/holiday-train/schedule-canada. The CP Holiday Train program has been running since 1999, raising more than $14.5 million, and gathering 4.3 million pounds of food for communities along its routes in Canada and the United States.

3RD ANNUAL COMEDY DATE NIGHT FUNDRAISER OCT. 26 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Celebrate Halloween at the third annual Comedy Date Night on Friday, Oct. 26, hosted by the North Grenville Community Fund (NGCF). The funfilled evening will include a costume contest, performances from three of Yuk Yuk's best stand-up comedians, food, drinks, and a DJ dance party to close the night. The annual fundraiser enables the NGCF to support local charities, like the Kinsmen Club of Kemptville and Victory Time Farms, which were each presented with a cheque for $1,400 at last year's event. Daren Givoque, chair of the NGCF, said the event is intended to advocate for charities in North Grenville and shed the spotlight on them. "Comedy Date Night brings people together in a fun environment in an affordable way, so everyone can have a good time and still support local charities," he said. "We strive to keep costs low so

everyone can afford to attend, not just people with deep pockets." The NGCF focuses on four main priorities: personalized and community-based philanthropy, working with donors to build endowment funds, contributing to a wide range of local organizations and initiatives, and bringing community partners together. Best-dressed guests will have a chance to score some prizes during the costume contest, which will reward the best costume with a pair of 200level tickets to a Sens game with privileged parking; a prize valued at $350. A gift basket will be presented to the runnerup for best costume, and there will also be a 50/50 draw. Snacks will be served during cocktail hour and throughout the evening,
and pizza will be for sale by the slice with vegetarian and gluten-free options available. All non-alcoholic beverages will be at no cost to attendees. The event will once again take place at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m. The committee is still looking for volunteers to help out at the event, and anyone interested in assisting with bar service should be smart serve certified. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact northgrenvillecommunityfund@gmail.com. Last year's Comedy Date Night sold out fast, so be sure to purchase your tickets sooner than later through www.Eventbrite.com. The event is listed under Comedy Date Night 2018. Tickets are $35 each or $300 for a table of ten.

The event was a delight for those who came from as far as Russell, Morrisburg, Kingston, Almonte and Cornwall areas, just to name a few. Event co-ordinator Brenda Ward said over 600 people attended the inaugural fibre showcase. The event also raised $200 for Neon Night, through its on-site yarn-winding table, which attendees paid by donation to use. "The local community support was amazing," said Ward. "I'd like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for making the first Leeds Grenville Fibre Extravaganza such an awesome event."

THIS TERM, LET'S DO MORE THAN VOTE CONTRIBUTE TO THE GOVERNANCE OF THE COMMUNITY, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column
It's almost Oct. 22. This is the time where we are supposed to encourage and remind each other, from 18-year-old to senior, to get out and vote. It's so important, to exercise your democratic rights this way. You get to contribute to the governance of the amazing community in which we all live. If you were born and raised here, like me, chances are when you were 18 the primary thought on your mind was not getting out and voting, but rather, getting out
of Dodge. But the truth is, most of us, if given the opportunity to live elsewhere, would still choose North Grenville. It is a pretty spectacular place to call home. I lived in the suburbs. I also lived overseas. When it was time to come home to Canada, my publishing certificate in hand, I just assumed I would end up in Toronto. That city, after all, is the home of Canadian publishing. The universe had another plan, however. I spent my first few months as a returning expat living at my parents' house, waiting for my driver's licence, health card and other privileges of being Canadian to be returned to me. During that time, I met and fell for the Farmer. I wasn't moving to Toronto. I often think about how life can change in an instant. Sometimes the same opportunities come up more than once. But we still have to take the step, push the button, answer the call, mark the ballot.
Buy the lottery ticket or you will never win. This week, we get to choose who will make decisions on our behalf, for the next four years. Let's choose carefully. We are in an interesting position, here in North Grenville. We are growing like crazy, but we are also trying very hard to hang on to our smalltown feel. We want new businesses and industry to move in, so that our skilled workers do not have to commute to the city every day. But we also want to be able to walk to the store, and to recognize people on the street. We want to keep our small town, but we want it to become sustainable. After we mark our ballots and learn who the new council will be, it's important to stay involved. I don't mean you have to go to council or committee of the whole meetings every Monday night, unless you want to. But stay involved. Get into the conversation
on social media. Read your local news. Learn what decisions are being made on your behalf, and hold your elected officials accountable if you think they are not following the will of the people who elected them. We want to see some big businesses move into our community in the near future. They would be foolish not to. We are perfect for them. We have green space and homes for their employees. We are situated next to the highway, halfway between the United States and the nation's capital. We have no excuse not to become a tourist attraction. We are beautiful, with our Ferguson Forest Centre, our south branch of the Rideau, and our old town. We have talented artists to entertain us, fun things to do, and great places to eat. When the new council comes in, and municipal staff makes plans to replace the Bridge Street bridge, I would like to see it built so that boats can easily pass beneath it. We can be a destination for day-trippers by water. We used to have huge steamer ships come
to our town centre. Local businesses need to realize that we are still a big community of commuters. Ottawa is a government town and many of us are driving north every day to help staff the machine that runs the country. Stay open later so that we can shop locally after work in the evenings. Kemptville used to have a thriving downtown of shops that stayed open late until the last train brought workers home on a weekday evening. We need to look at our past to define our future. We have many things to consider as we manage our community growth and prosperity into the next four years. We want all the things that growth brings, but we also want to remain the community that looks out for its own. We are North Grenville. Now let's go and vote. UCDSB CONDUCTING EDUCATION REFORM CONSULTATIONS The provincial government has launched its period for public consultation on education reform. The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) encourages parents, staff, students and community partners to take this opportunity to provide their insight. "All UCDSB staff and trustees want our students to have curriculum that is strong and modern, and that will provide them with the skills they need to succeed in life - and we know through feedback that our students want that too," said chair Jeff McMillan. "This public consultation period is the chance for everyone who has a vested interest in public education to share their thoughts and opinions. The UCDSB board of trustees is planning to participate in these opportunities wherever possible, ensuring that the government hears our voice as locally elected officials who are prepared to work collaboratively with communities to maintain and enhance the value of public education in our part of rural Ontario." The public consultation period is open until Dec. 15, 2018.
The topics of discussion are as follows: • how to improve student performance in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); • how our schools are preparing students with needed job skills; • what more can be done to ensure students graduate with important life skills, like financial literacy; and • how to build an updated and age-appropriate health and physical education curriculum that includes subjects like sexual health education, mental health and the legalization of cannabis. Those interested in participating in these consultations can do so three ways: via online submission form or by emailing fortheparents@ontario.ca or auservicedesparents@ontario.ca; through an online survey; or via telephone town halls. The form, survey and dates for the town halls can be found on the government's website, fortheparents.ca. Submitted by the Upper Canada District School Board

SO-CALLED 'FAKE NEWS' HAS MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES JEFF MAGUIRE WONDERS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH? JEFF MAGUIRE Column
Donald Trump has and is making his mark on the position of United States' president although I think it's fair to say most Americans and most interested people around the world believe it's a black mark. As a career journalist
my interest lies mainly in Trump's almost daily references to "fake news." I certainly believe there is such a thing. Just watch the two major U.S. television news networks. I think most of you will very quickly determine what is fake and what is real in terms of their coverage! In Trump's case I believe "fake news" refers to anyone who writes or broadcasts anything that is contrary to his bleatings (his daily Twitter tirades for example) or those who comment on what passes for his government's policies. Yes, lots of fake news for sure! There's little doubt that in the midst of what some are calling "the Trump era"
truth is taking a severe beating. At the very least a lot of people - and I'm not only referring to politicians are being rather economical with the truth these days. Fact checking has become a daily part of this unfolding drama. The number of factual "errors" Trump has made in two years number in the thousands. Fake news indeed! This is a very tough time to be a journalist, especially in the U.S. where Trump, his supporters and others are whipping people into a frenzy by suggesting that the media is "the real enemy of the people." Threats made against media members and organizations are increasing exponentially.
For example, a really scary threat made against the Boston Globe newspaper recently. That led to a dramatic police raid on a home in California. A man now faces multiple charges in the case. I won't only pick on the U.S. here. Because the truth is that journalists and a free press are under attack worldwide. Sadly, the global map of countries and places where reporters are free to report the news without interference is shrinking rapidly. There isn't a week that passes without more bad news in this regard. Fortunately, it appears North American press freedom won't be strangled as easily as it has been in so many
other countries. This issue has multiple personalities and what is happening south of the border has clearly rubbed off on Canada. My concern is not so much that we are being lied to in many instances but rather that we aren't receiving all of the information we should be getting. "The whole truth and nothing but the truth" in other words! For example, there has been a lot written recently about why, in so many cases, the police in this country (and elsewhere) withhold information, delay releasing details in certain cases or don't release some things at all. It's especially true if the incidents involve the police themselves. The tragic murders of two police officers and
two civilians in a shooting in the New Brunswick capital of Fredericton is a recent case in point. Why, for example, did it take so long for police to release even the number of victims involved in that terribly sad event? I'm only scratching the surface by referring to the Fredericton shooting case. There is so much more involved in Canada and other developed countries with respect to this situation in general. Fake news, or no news, has become a subject of real concern! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com.

Mark your calendars: The Lanark Animal Welfare Society's annual general meeting is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Kinsman Club in Smiths Falls, from 1 to 3 p.m. Remember to get your memberships renewed in order to be a voting member of LAWS.
This week's featured pets Annabelle Hi, I am Annabelle. I've been sent to Perth Pet Valu to be adopted. I love it here; they have good food and cat trees and comfy cat beds. I hope you get me one when you come to adopt me. It has been busy in the store; kittens come and kittens go, but I am still here. Please look at me, too. I had five babies of my own, but they've found homes already. It's my turn, don't you think? See you soon. Love, Annabelle.

Ulyss Hi, I am Ulyss. My previous family had to surrender me because of serious health reasons. That was in April. It took a long time to get over that. I missed them a lot. I've been adjusting at LAWS and enjoyed being with other cats, but whenever people came to adopt I was a little shy to meet them, so I was overlooked over and over and over
again. They've sent me to Carleton Place's Natural Pet Foods at 61 Bridge St. I hope someone sees this message and comes to meet me. I am truly a nice boy, with fantastic green eyes and a lovely, shiny, black coat. Would you please take a chance on me? I'd love to be in a true forever home again. Hugs, Ulyss. Felix

MOTHER'S ATTEMPT AT PRODUCING HOMEMADE SOAP SHORT-LIVED MARY COOK RECALLS HOW SALES DRIED UP AFTER JUST 1 WEEK MARY COOK Column
There was no reason in the world, Mother thought, that she couldn't add a bit more cash to her egg money. Although it was all called "egg money," it could come from selling drawn chickens, butter or sticky buns, fresh vegetables when our garden was
flourishing in the summer time, and of course, eggs. But fall had settled in, and Mother was anxious to make up for the loss of vegetable sales when she went door to door every Saturday through the streets of Renfrew. And she knew just how she was going to do it too. Aunt Bertha Thom on our next farm had showed Mother how to make homemade soap, and she could see no reason why she couldn't add these little bars to her peddling door to door. She was sure the housewives of Renfrew would be delighted. Of course, she had to perfect the soap-making first.
She was new at the job, and we five kids thought Mother needed a lot more practice before she could add homemade soap to her list. We stayed well away from her when she was putting everything together. We saw her use Gillett's Lye, which took our breath away if we came within five feet of it, and my sister Audrey was sure she would see smoke coming out of the tin when Mother opened it. Water was boiled, and rendered fat got its way into the mix too. Mother even bought a fresh lemon and added its juice as well. As soon as we tried it
with our Saturday night bath, we knew Mother had a lot to learn. For some reason, bits of the lye hadn't melted, and we kids ended up with scratches all over our bodies. We begged Mother to let us use the one and only bar of Ivory soap we had on the farm, and was supposed to be used for company. She said the next batch she would make would be vastly improved, and the bar of Ivory was wrapped up and put away, and whether we liked it or not, we had to get used to the homemade lye soap! Mother was sure the next batch would be better. She said she learned that the water had to be at a rolling boil when poured onto the lye, and she said two lemons were better than one. Father was sure Mother was losing money on the whole idea. Gillett's Lye wasn't cheap, and buying fresh lemons was a sheer luxury. But Mother said she was sure selling the little bars at 15 cents apiece would more than pay for the money she spent mak-
ing the soap. Well, that first Saturday, Mother's customers seemed delighted to have a bar of freshly made soap right off the farm, and it didn't take long to empty the basket she had packed the soap in. She was so excited, she went right over to Scott's Hardware and bought not one, but two tins of Gillett's Lye! Well, the next Saturday, soap sales slowed down to a crawl. Every customer who had bought the week before complained about the bits and pieces of unmelted lye which left scratch marks all over the user's body. "We'll still buy your eggs, chickens and buns, but we'll pass on the homemade soap, if you don't mind," was what we heard at every house where we had sold the soap the week before. Well, much to our relief, Mother gave up on the homemade lye soap. The bar of Ivory came out on Saturday night, sparingly used for our tub baths, and then wrapped and put
away for another week. And we were back to the big yellow bar with no name that came from Briscoe's General Store, and which sat in a saucer by the wash basin in the kitchen, used to wash up before we could put a crumb of food in our mouths. The homemade lye soap was never mentioned again. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? Many thanks to the staff at Barker’s Funeral Home for their guidance and assistance. Mom’s Celebration of Life at St James Anglican Church was a heartfelt and loving tribute with the assistance of many people including The Ven. Brian Kauk, The Rev. Canon David Andrew, Choir Director Ian Guenette and the choir, and our “church family” members. The luncheon and reception afterwards was beautiful due to all the special touches from St. James “kitchen crew”. Thanks to family, friends and former teaching colleagues for attending Mom’s visitation and the many generous donations to the Alzheimers Society and UCDSB Champions for Kids Foundation. All the kind words, caring gestures and hugs have made us realize even more how lucky we were to have her and how much we will miss her.
We would like to thank our family and friends for helping us celebrate our 65th Wedding Anniversary. Many thanks to those that helped supply a lovely lunch. We mustn’t forget to mention the many relations that came from quite a distance to be with us on this important occasion. Some came from Cambridge, Brampton, Ottawa, Newmarket, Guelph, Niagara Falls and Cornwall. So many of our good friends and neighbours took the time to come and wish us well. Many thanks to Father McNally for saying the Mass for our intention and presenting us with the certificate from the Pope. Also for coming out to have a visit with us and give us His Blessing. If we have missed anyone it is not intentional and once again thank you to everyone that visited us, gave cards, sent cards and gifts and phoned. Its a day we won’t forget for as long as we are here. Francis and Jean Malloy

Coventry, England April 05, 1921-September 30, 2018 It is with profound sadness and a modicum of relief that we announce Norma’s passing at Ottawa, in the early morning hours of September 30th, 2018, finally at peace. She will be achingly missed by Jack, her devoted and loving husband of 74 years, her son Peter (Karen, grandsons Benjamin and Luke), daughter Lois (Richard and family), grandchildren Megan (Kevin, great granddaughter Abigail Zelia), Peter (great grandson Garrett) and Tyler (Sara, twin great granddaughters Elle and Parker), predeceased by daughter Linda Jeanne (October 03, 2012). Norma set out on her amazing journey of life in Coventry, England. She joined the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) during WWII where she met her RCAF war hero and soon to be husband Jack. Norma, as many war brides did, came to Canada ready to continue her married life through years of military and diplomatic service with postings across the country and around the world including: Accra, Ghana, Nairobi, Kenya, New Delhi, India and France where they both proudly represented Canada. Over her many years of travel with Jack, Norma thrived as a wife, home maker and social director par excellence! Her artistic ability was and is exemplified in many projects completed over the years, represented by pastel, oil and acrylic paintings, award winning poetry, outstandingly complex knitted and crocheted sweaters and blankets, delicious soups (in which Dad would inevitably get the only bone to be found in the pot!!), decadent traditional English Christmas pudding and cakes. She left us an incredible legacy of memories of her wicked sense of humour, joy of fishing, golfing, tennis and escapades in Naples, Florida, walks along the beach in Mombasa and so much more. Norma also dedicated over 30 years of volunteering by knitting hats and booties for newborns and other duties as needed at the Naples Hospital. Our warmest thanks to the ladies and gentlemen PSWs and nurses from G2N and R2S at the Perley Rideau for their understanding, guidance and patience. Norma’s memorial will be set for a later date.

Rudy Lepage Oct. 15, 1941-Oct 15, 1998 In Loving memory, on the 20th Anniversary of our Dad’s passing. Happy Birthday Dad xoxo He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went on quietly working For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there....A firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad One of our greatest blessings Was the man we call Dad. Les, Norm, Rick, Debbie, Darlene (Joan)
DUBE, Michel (Mike) – In loving memory of a dear husband, father and papa who left us October 9th, 2015. You’ve just walked ahead of us And we’ve got to understand. That we must release the ones we love And let go of their hand. Everyday you’re missed so much We wish we could see your smile. And once more feel your touch Even if it’s for just a while. Yes, you’ve just walked ahead of us But, Don’t worry we’ll be O’Kay Because now and then we swear We see your smile come our way. In our hearts we know Jesus has the answer We know you believed in him so And that’s why we can give the greatest gift, the gift of letting go. Until we meet again Always remembered, sadly missed and loved by his wife Patsy, his children and grandchildren

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
