NANCY PECKFORD NORTH GRENVILLE'S FIRST FEMALE MAYOR PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com On Oct. 22, North Grenville residents elected Nancy Peckford, making her the first female mayor of the amalgamated Municipality of North Grenville. Peckford, who garnered 2,844 votes, brings more than 20 years of political experience to the council table and is the executive director of Equal Voice, a federally incorporated not-for-profit organization. The organization is dedicated to the equal representation of women in all levels of political office in Canada. In 2014, Peckford made the list of the Women's Executive Network's Top 100 Powerful Women in Canada. The voter tally put her well ahead in the race, beating current Coun. Jim Bertram, who had 1,632 votes, incumbent David Gordon (1,200), and Elwood Armour (254). Peckford joins a brand-new council, with Jim McManaman collecting the most votes of all candidates at 3,160, Craig McCormick with 2,795, John Barclay with 2,734 votes, and Doreen

O'Sullivan at 2,591. After she watched the results come in at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Election Day, Peckford joined her family and friends at Salamander's Restaurant to celebrate. She told The Advance that she wanted to join the mayoral race with a clear mandate and strong message from residents. "They showed me that they wanted a new direction," she said, minutes after her victory. "I had seven campaign priorities from the beginning, so I think people had a really good opportunity to assess what I was offering, and the people have spoken." Peckford said her experience knocking on doors, answering questions at all candidates meetings, and getting to know residents at meet-and-greet events led her to believe that the community had a big appetite for change. "We weren't sure how much change, but the debates and conversations at the door while canvassing really made for a remarkable experience. It gave me solid insight into the various experiSee PECKFORD, page 2

PECKFORD FOCUSED ON NEW DIRECTION Continued from page 1

Retirees Eager to † Try New Hearing Aid A new award winning hearing aid is now available for retirees!‡ It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the strain that

effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

ences across the municipality - I think there's real energy." While canvassing, Peckford heard that a lot of residents wanted to start from scratch with a fresh vision and scrap the old way of doing things. She named some of the most significant concerns as infrastructure stresses, rapid growth and development, and the need for people in the community to take care of each other. "As a community and as a municipality, we need to fill some gaps so that seniors, families, baby boomers, empty nesters, local businesses, and everybody in between are able to stay positive and stay connected here," she said. When asked what she'll tackle first in her new role, Peckford said this time of year would usually be budget consultation time. "We will have to look at

what people expect out of this budget in terms of investments, but also whether or not tax increases are really necessary," she said. "I've been really cracking those books open and looking at where the opportunity is and where our responsibilities lie." Peckford identified the expansion of County Road 43 as another big priority which will require the new council to look at all levels of government for the necessary resources. "I think the time is now," she said. "Provincially we've got our champion in Steve Clark, and I think we want to work really quickly to make sure we have the resources." Originally from New-

foundland and Labrador, Peckford was raised with passion for politics in her family, and is naturally politically inclined as a result. She holds a Master's degree on the formation of women's political interests in Canada and has lived in a variety of urban, rural, and northern communities. Peckford, her husband, and her three children currently reside in Kemptville. "I want to make sure every voice is heard," she said. "I want a transparent local government, because I think we all need that." For more municipal election coverage, visit www.InsideOttawaValley.com.

COMPLETELY NEW MAYOR, COUNCIL FOR MERRICKVILLE-WOLFORD DOUG STRUTHERS RETURNS TO MAYOR'S CHAIR PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Merrickville-Wolford residents voted for change during the 2018 municipal election, with voter turnout reflecting 54.8 per cent of the eligible voter population. The mayor's chair was taken by Doug Struthers, previously mayor for 14 years and councillor for six, with 609 votes. Struthers' numbers well surpass the 390 for incumbent Dave Nash, 325 for current deputy mayor Anne Barr, and 151 for current councillor Chuck MacInnis. Struthers was collecting his campaign signs

from the roadside when The Advance spoke with him on Oct. 23. He said he wasn't exactly surprised by the results, but that receiving 40 per cent of the vote was a significant sign that residents were ready for change. "My message clearly resonated with the residents of Merrickville-Wolford, and I'm also extremely mindful that the remaining 60 per cent of the vote was spread out between the three other candidates." When it comes to his experience, Struthers said it's crucial for the new council to remember that their job is to represent all of the residents of Merrickville-Wolford. "We need to be mindful that there are other views out there other than our own, and we need to make

our decisions based on that consideration," he said. Struthers is quite familiar with his fellow council members already, as he's crossed paths with them over many years in the village. "I feel very encouraged by the council that the residents have elected and I look forward to sitting with them at the table and working together over the next four years." One of the first issues that Struthers would like to address as mayor is to ensure that council understands what its roles and responsibilities are as individuals, and as a collaborative council. "We will also need to ensure that staff understands their roles and responsibilities so there is no confusion or distraction from the governance side and

the implementation of decisions and the delivery of services to our residents." This term, Merrickville-Wolford council has elected two councillors for each of the wards, reducing the council's size from seven members to five. One of the successful candidates for the Merrickville ward is former Merrickville fire chief, Bob Foster, with 397 votes. He is joined by Timothy Molloy with 332 votes, who brings over 32 years of council experience to the table. New Wolford ward councillors are Michael Cameron with 550 votes, and Don Halpenny with 451 votes, re-elected for a third term. NORTH GRENVILLE VOTES FOR CHANGE WITH COMPLETE COUNCIL TURNOVER PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The results of the municipal election in North Grenville prove that residents wanted change. In fact, all five council seats are seeing a complete turnover. The unofficial results, posted on the municipal website at approximately 8:50 p.m. show Nancy Peckford as North Grenville's new mayor-elect, as she scored 2,844 votes. She will also be the amalgamated municipality's first female mayor. Jim McManaman received more votes than any

other mayoral or council candidate, with 3,160 to his name. The total number of voters was 5,960. Joining McManaman on council is Craig McCormick with 2,795 votes, John Barclay with 2,734 votes and Doreen O'Sullivan with 2,591 votes. Many of the candidates gathered at Shoeless Joe's restaurant in Kemptville to celebrate the end of their campaigns after the results were published. McManaman said he is looking forward to getting to work, and that there are some businesses in North Grenville that need better support from council. He

Dressed to the nines, 175 "wedding guests" who filled the pews at St. John's United Church in Kemptville Sept. 23, shared an afternoon of memories, laughter and even a few tears at the Kemptville District Hospital Auxiliary's (KDHA) sold-out event, Celebrating Decades of Bridal Gowns and Engaging in High Tea. The event, co-ordinated by visionary KDHA volunteer Linda Carnegie, featured models dressed in gowns worn by Kemptville and area brides from the 1920s to the present day, escorted down the aisle by members of the North Grenville Fire Service. As the models traversed the aisle, the afternoon's MCs, Diana Fisher and Jenny Thibert, described the bridal fashions, hairstyles, makeup, headwear and floral designs of the decade. Moreover, they shared stories and photos from each bride's special day. It was heartwarming to see that some of the models were the owners of the gowns, reliving their wedding days. Following the fashion show, guests were treated to a high tea complete with fancy sandwiches and desserts, and a number of unique items were raffled and auctioned off, including a member of the North Grenville Fire Service! Attendees had been encouraged to dress up in wedding finery of their own, and each guest was given a unique fascinator headpiece that was created in advance by a group of volunteers from the local RBC. As a fundraiser, the event was a huge success, raising approximately $6,000, which will be used for the direct benefit of patients at Kempt-

OPINION EDITORIAL

HELP BREAK THE SILENCE Every child has a right to safety and well-being. October is Child Abuse Prevention Month and it's a perfect time to underscore the responsibility of the community to keep children safe and for the public to understand their duty to protect kids. Family and Children's Services of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville (FCSLLG) and local organizations, businesses and individuals are joining communities across Ontario to support the cause with the purple ribbon campaign. "Family and Children's Services of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville protects children so they can grow up safe from abuse, including physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as neglect," states the FCSLLG website. The nonprofit organization has a role under the law to "support families when they need it and, when required, take the necessary steps to make sure children are protected. We carry out our work under the Ontario Child and Family Services Act, which requires us to investigate possible abuse or neglect of children and ensure the safety of those who need protection." The Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies' (OACAS) big initiative for Child Abuse Prevention Month is Ontario Dress Purple Day, held on Oct. 24. Its priority is to support children living safely with their immediate family. "The classroom resources are evidence-based primary prevention materials, empowering students to think and act in positive ways, appropriate for their age and stage of learning and development," notes the OACAS website. "The goal of the materials is to help all children and youth, regardless of the situation they are in, to acquire skills and attributes that lessen their vulnerability to harm." Those online classroom resources are available at www.oacas.org/dresspurpleday. Purple ribbon T-shirts can also be purchased online at the address above. For more than 100 years, OACAS has been providing leadership, service excellence and advocacy to children, youth and families across the province. Their vision is to provide an effective children services system based on the core values to be collaborative, accountable, courageous, innovative and transparent. Locally, FCSLLG planned a Dress Purple Barbecue Oct. 24 at its Brockville and Perth locations between 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. School staff and students were invited to dress in purple, talk about children's rights to safety and well-being and tweet photos of their school/classes dressed in purple, using the hashtag #iBREAKtheSilence. Everyone in the community has a role to play in supporting children's rights.

WHO WE ARE

BACK TO WORK REALITY IS A LITTLE DAUNTING FOR ALMOST A MONTH, I WAS LOGGED OUT OF THE SWAMP OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND IT WAS NOTHING SHORT OF MAGNIFICENT LAURIE WEIR Column

For almost a month, I was logged out of the swamp of social media (for work) and it was nothing short of magnificent. Gone were the incessant dings of Facebook/Instagram and Twitter notifications (I need to delete FB notifications permanently), not to mention a tsunami of emails. The flood gates were cracked open on Thursday last week, so I wouldn't be swept up in the wave on Monday when other important things were happening like the municipal election.

It's been busy around here with the legalization of cannabis last week topping the news stories. What a day that was for Canada. Smoke weed people, or don't. We've been doing it for centuries ... still now sure why it's such a big deal. Sweet Baby and I flew to Labrador (next time we'll drive) to visit with three of his five sisters who live there (the other two are in Newfoundland along with one brother. He has a second brother in New Brunswick). They would not let us pay for anything. And food! Holy smokes, hubby gained about five pounds and couldn't get into his regular size 30 pants. I was relatively good, walked about 5K a day, and my clothes still fit at the end of it. Big sigh of relief

there! Lots of sightseeing - we were even asked to be official tourists for a new Labrador company and were taken on a trip to see the Birch Island Trail, dog sledding at Northern Lights, and a canoe builder by the name of Joe Goudie. That gig was worth the $50 - which they paid us! I shall blog about that experience elsewhere when I catch up with work tasks. Then we spent a week at Lower Beverley Lake Park - our home away from home. It was the relaxation needed before heading into a week hanging out with Mom, who had her second kneereplacement surgery. She's been a much better patient this time around, as she's getting along great. It was good to get away, but to be honest, I'm glad to be back under the tidal wave of the antics in the newsroom. MUNICIPAL ELECTION

A TOTAL OF 5,960 RESIDENTS VOTED, CONFIRMS CLERK CAHL POMINVILLE PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Election day on Oct. 22 showed that North Grenville residents wanted to see some big changes, as a brand-new council was chosen with the first female mayor for the area, Nancy Peckford, elected with 2,844 votes. New councillors are Jim McManaman, Doreen O'Sullivan, Craig McCormick and John Barclay. The clerk at the Munici-

pality of North Grenville, Cahl Pominville, kept busy on election day organizing the voting area and overseeing the voting process at the municipal centre in Kemptville. Pominville has been actively organizing municipal elections in North Grenville since the municipality's amalgamation in 1998, and has witnessed voter turnout ebb and flow over the years. He says voter turnout increased when the internet was introduced and online voting became available. This year, Pominville saw North Grenville's largest voter turnout of 47.1 per cent, beating last election's 42 per cent, and translating

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland The North Grenville Municipal Centre's sign encouraging residents to vote. Clerk Cahl Pominville said the 2018 election results showed a 47.1 per cent voter turnout, which matched the best turnout on record from the 2010 election. to a grand total of 5,960 votes. The turnout actually matches the number from 2010's municipal election, which also saw exactly 47.1 per cent. Pominville estimates that approximately 300-400 people voted on Oct. 21, as the voter percentage jumped from 25 to 36 in one day. By 4 p.m. on Oct. 22, just over 4,500 people had voted either by phone, online or by paper ballot, which is just over 36 per cent of eligible voters in

North Grenville. By 6:30 p.m., more than 5,000 had voted. Those who worked at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on election day to keep voters moving through the process quickly deserve some recognition.

There were two people greeting residents and making sure they have the right information, five people adding residents to the voters' list if they weren't already on it, six tables with people distributing voter ballots, six voting

booths and two more people to show voters how to submit their ballots into the tabulator machine. In addition, there were two more people to oversee the whole process and ensure that the flow was uninterrupted. Though results were delayed due to high traffic on the municipal website, staff worked to display them as soon as possible. North Grenville's new mayor and council will come into effect Dec. 1, and be officially sworn-in on Monday, Dec. 3. Demographics, including the areas of residence of voters and their age groups will be presented by Pominville at the next council meeting on Monday, Nov. 12 within the council chambers at the municipal centre. MUNICIPAL ELECTION

VOTER TURNOUT TOPS 47 PER CENT Continued from page 6

Equipped with a strong background as a business owner himself, McManaman is very supportive of all business in North Grenville. "The previous council stepped on the BIA's (busi-

ness improvement area) toes a little bit, which shouldn't have happened," he said. "Going forward, I look very forward to building a great relationship with them, with the chamber, and with all local businesses." McCormick was in the

comfort of his own home when the election results came in. "I'm very happy," he told The Advance on the morning of Oct. 23. "It's been a long four months, but I enjoyed every minute of it." McCormick said he wasn't surprised by the re-

sults, considering the amount of potential there was among the candidates. "It could have been anybody - that's the sense I was getting from people," he said. One of the first things McCormick would like to do as councillor is meet

"It's very gratifying for me, but I'm surprised that Deron (Johnston) is not with us and that (Barb) Tobin is not with us," said Barclay. "I'm very pleased that Nancy got elected."

He added that it's evident the community wanted complete change. When asked what he'd like to tackle first, Barclay said the budget is No. 1. "I think we should be looking at some projects we can take on right away that demonstrate an active council," he said. "Something low cost, but with big impact." The position as councillor for Barclay is only the fourth salaried position he's ever held, following his work with the Kemptville Youth Centre, B&H: Your Community Grocer, and as executive director of the Old Town Kemptville BIA. Otherwise, Barclay has been an independent contractor with his film production company, Triune Productions Inc. "So, I understand what it's like for small business owners to put their heart and soul into what they do," he explained. "Jim McManaman knows, and Nancy (Peckford) also understands, so I feel happy for small businesses in North Grenville because we are now on council for them." O'Sullivan was joined by her husband Anthony in celebrating her council seat victory on Oct. 22. "For the rest of this year, I think the important thing is that we build a team and really get to know each other and our individual styles," she said. "I want to congratulate all of the candidates, because I really think North Grenville was spoiled with good choices." O'Sullivan said all the candidates have different skills and experience to offer, and that she is thrilled to be working with those elected. "I had the sense, from knocking on doors, that there was a big appetite for change," she said. "I'm really happy and I'm ready to get to work. I have things to learn, but I also have a thirst for knowledge, so I'm very excited." Voter turnout reached 47.1 per cent of the eligible voter population in North Grenville this election, matching the 2010 election record best. Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Ken Schliemann of New Energy Kreations in downtown Kemptville leans on a couch that he is refurbishing for a client. Schliemann plans for his shop's expansion in November, due to a high demand in custom furniture design and restoration from the community. The shop's new location will be 24 Prescott Street in downtown Kemptville.

Ew E n RIC P

New Energy Kreations, an upholstery shop specializing in custom furniture projects, is preparing for their second expansion. Owner Ken Schliemann says he can barely keep up with the demand in his current location at 132 Prescott Street in downtown Kemptville, and needs more space in order to get all his work done. Schliemann also plans to hire more employees as the shop expands. Aside from custom furniture design, restorations and repairs, New Energy Kreations also offers interior design for vehicles and boats. The shop will be relocating to 24 Prescott Street, next to the Crusty Baker, in November. Schliemann first opened his business in the lower level of the former Carnegie Library on Prescott Street in May of 2017 and then moved to his current location just three months later, in August. Now, he is ready to move once again. "This is one week's work," he said, pointing at a corner of his work space crowded with pillows, chairs, and fabric. "You see all the furniture?" he laughed. "This is how busy we are - we can't keep up." Schliemann described a project he is undertaking to completely refurbish a couch with new fabric, piping and accent pillows. His passion for custom upholstery and detail-oriented work is evident as he describes the choices of colour, shape, style, and texture. "I need a commercial seamstress," he said and explained that the shop is bringing in two new sewing machines. Schliemann is looking to hire a part-time

MOVIE NIGHT WITH SUSTAINABLE NORTH GRENVILLE ON NOV. 1 Happy fall, North Grenville! The team at Sustainable North Grenville has been at work, planning the fall and winter events for our community. We will be leading with a movie night to screen the Scott Hamilton Kennedy film Food Evolution. Narrated by

Neil DeGrasse Tyson, this documentary film explores "the good, the bad and the ugly of genetic engineering." The filmmakers felt that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) had become a metaphor for almost every issue we have

with food and our food system, and decided to explore whether, by better understanding the GMO issues, we could make better decisions about science and technology in general. More information on the film can be found online at www.foodevolutionmovie-

.com. We will be screening Food Evolution at the Grenville Mutual building in Kemptville on Thursday, Nov. 1. Please aim to arrive by 6:45 p.m. so we can be ready for a 7 p.m. start. There is no cost to join us. Donations are discretion-

ary and always welcome to help us cover the licensing costs for screenings like this. Come watch the film and mingle with others from the community. We will have some time afterward for discussion and to share thoughts. Be sure to stay connect-

ed to Sustainable North Grenville in the coming months as we round out the fall and winter events: www.sustainablenorthgrenville.com. Submitted by Jeff Goodman, Sustainable North Grenville

DIANA FISHER Column

A moose wandered out of the Ferguson Forest Centre and out onto the highway on Friday, Oct. 12. No one was hurt, thank goodness, and the moose was ushered out of town by police, without incident. She was spotted crossing County Road 18 at midnight and again on Oct. 13 in a soybean field outside Oxford Mills. But she hasn't been spotted since then, unless people have seen her and are just keeping it to themselves. It's all quiet on the western front where the Moose on the Loose is concerned. It was a big deal, to see a moose up close and personal, in our neck of the woods. We don't normally get them this far south unless you are in a heavily wooded area. So on Oct. 13 when I saw the cars pulled over at the side of the road and people standing in the ditch, taking photos of the moose and attempting to call her over with their faux-moose mating calls, I decided I would like a word with her myself. "You can come and live at our place," I told her. I understand that moose can't see really well. They rely a great deal on their hearing, for their survival,

so it is probably their best sense. I just spoke to the moose in a regular voice and she turned to stare in my direction. "We have 200 acres. Much of it is forest. We also have soybean, but I don't recommend you tramp all over it or the Farmer will get ticked off. Stay on the edges of the field, like you are now. If you get thirsty, there's the creek. And if the winter is particularly cold, you can find shelter in our barn. We don't have any animals right now. It's just the Farmer in there, with his sawmill. He's milling his own wood for the cottage he is building ..." I realized I was speaking to a moose. And I thought the people doing the moose calls were weird. But seriously, I hope she comes to live on our property. If she doesn't head back up north out of loneliness, that is. I don't imagine there are too many of her kind around here. I wonder if she gets along with deer? We have at least one complete family living in our forest. The buck has a huge rack. She might be impressed by that. A female moose is called a cow. Maybe she would like to spend time in a herd of cattle. She has probably already passed through several head of cattle on her recent journey. If she finds a farmer who is a little nearsighted, she might even blend in enough to help herself to their hay. We are only three farmers' fields south of where the moose was last spotted. If she continues to follow

LUCY THE MOOSE, WHERE ARE YOU?

the creek, she will find us. It's quite possible that she already has. Fergus the Golden Retriever has been doing an awful lot of barking at night. Perhaps he senses she is out there, in the meadow, just beyond the stone fence. Our neighbour has been working for months, turning his forest into hay fields. Soon the leaves will be off the trees and I will be able to see past the tree line into his property. With the forest gone, my view will likely be unobstructed for miles. Maybe I will be able to see right into the village. If that moose wanders out into the open, I will be able to see her. It would be comforting to know that she is in a safe place, and not having too many encounters with humans and civilization. Bad things tend to happen when wildlife and humans mix. My son-in-law christened the animal Lucy the Moose because she is on the loose. I'm sure she would like to keep it that way. Oh and I know what you are thinking - the Farmer is a hunter. No need to worry, though. He only hunts what he likes to eat and he has had moose before. It was not to his liking. I've had it before as well, and I've got to admit I'm not a fan. So Lucy is more than safe here, should she decide to wander over and stay. When the snow comes we will be able to track her like we do the deer in the forest. It's always nice to know your property is being enjoyed to its fullest.

the county, and beyond.) "The amount of generosity from your communities is incredible," said Colton. He called the pre-packaged bags of food people could pick up to donate to the food bank a " great" idea, and commended supermarkets for marking sure that they are "usually well displayed." The Build a Mountain float is usually seen outand-about at several area county Santa Claus parades. On Thanksgiving Day, Colton was out giving the once-over to make sure that they are ready for parade days. "We will be doing as many parades as we can, logistically," he said. The parades he has penciled in on his calendar so

far are: • Carleton Place Santa Claus Parade, Saturday, Nov. 24. • Perth and Athens Santa Claus Parades, Saturday, Dec. 1. • Smiths Falls Santa Claus Parade, Saturday, Dec. 8. Plus, a community night is planned for Portland on Friday, Dec. 14. Colton and the Build a Mountain of Food team are also expecting to attend the CP Holiday Train when it hits Merrickville, Smiths Falls, and Perth Wednesday, Nov. 28. "The majority of people have been good," said Colton, in giving out some advice. Many people by now "know about Build a Mountain." The Food Blitz dates and locations are as follows: • Saturday, Nov. 10: Al-

MUNICH OKTOBERFEST LEFT US THIRSTING FOR MORE VISIT TO HOFBRÄUHAUS GREAT WAY TO SOAK UP FESTIVAL, JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES fest which is the largest beer festival and fun fair in the world. "Munchen (Munich) Oktoberfest" is the prototype for similar beer festivals around the world, including the nearly 50year-old event in Kitchener-Waterloo which attracts hundreds of thousands to the southern Ontario city each fall. Munich's spectacular dates back to 1810! Oktoberfest is a vital part of the regional culture and a massive, annual boost for the tourism industry in Munich.

JEFF MAGUIRE Column

We have recently returned from Europe where we again explored beautiful southern Germany with side trips to France and Switzerland. My travel-related columns invariably elicit the biggest reader response so I intend to share some of our experiences in the coming weeks. We were there during the city's annual Oktober-

Kathleen, I, our friends and longtime travel companions Wendy and Frank LeBlanc had not originally planned our visit around Oktoberfest. A quick check online revealed that this year's festival (it ran for 16 days) started a few days before our arrival. Oktoberfest is centred in a park in the Munich borough of Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadows" in English), away from the city centre. So, we had a choice to make. Go to Theresienwiese and stand shoulder to shoulder with countless others in large tents erected for the occasion? Or stay in the centre and

sample the delights of the most famous beer hall in the world? We opted for 'Hofbräuhaus' the largest and oldest beer hall in the city which can seat up to 5,000 revellers. Located in Marienplatz in Munich's old town, Hofbräuhaus was originally established in 1589 by the Duke of Bavaria as the official royal brewery. Soon after it became publicly owned and operated by the Bavarian government. It has remained so ever since. What a time we had at Hofbräuhaus! It was a Tuesday night, but with so many people in Munich for Oktoberfest (more than six

million attend annually) the beer hall was busier than usual. We were fortunate to arrive just as some customers were leaving and quickly sat down. Beer is served in massive one litre glasses. They are so heavy, it's hard to lift them with one hand. Frank and I opted for "dunkel" a dark German lager. Our wives, who aren't beer drinkers, ordered wein (wine). Germany produces some of the best wines in the world! We joined the crowd, swaying to the music of the oompah band and singing the Hofbräuhaus song performed in the local Bavarian dialect, "In Munchen

steht ein Hofbräuhaus: Eins, zwei, g'suffa! (In Munich is the Hofbräuhaus: One, two, down the hatch!)" Hofbräuhaus with its heavy beer mugs emblazoned with the famous "HB" initials is Munich's biggest year-round tourist attraction. Based on our brief time there, little wonder! We would love to experience it again. "Prost to Hofbräuhaus!" See a longer version of this story on www.insideottawavalley.com. Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Ken Schliemann of New Energy Kreations shows off his busy workshop, filled with custom furniture orders which are pushing him to expand to a new location and hire more employees. The shop's grand opening in its new location is set for Nov. 23 from 4-7 p.m.

seamstress to begin at the shop as soon as possible, and may also be looking to hire someone to help keep his website and social media platforms updated. "Each project is totally different," Schliemann said. "It's all custom work, and everybody wants something different." From vintage to modern styles, Schliemann can do it all, and has a variety of materials and fabric patterns to work with. The shop is currently featuring a brand-new line of highend luxury textiles from Kravet, of which he is an exclusive carrier. "Anyone in the interior design world

knows the value of these textiles," he said. Schliemann has been working with upholstery since he was 12, as he was brought up with the craft in his family. He used to work primarily on restoring antiques, and is now doing everything from custom furniture creations to boat covers and even the interior of vehicles. "I redo the covers, the seats, steering wheels, everything," he said. "You name it, we can do it." The expansion will not only bring more space and a bigger team for Schliemann - he also plans to host furniture restoration workshops in the new space, where customers

can learn how to give pieces a distressed look with a new brand of Canadian clay-based paint that is growing in popularity, called Country Chic Paints. The shop's grand opening in its new location at 24 Prescott Street will be held Friday, Nov. 23 from 4-7 p.m. At the event, guests will be able to enter a draw for a chair giveaway, in addition to other prizes up for grabs. For more information about employment opportunities or services offered at New Energy Kreations, contact Ken Schliemann at the shop at 613-713-4444 or visit www.NewEnergyKreations.ca.

WORK TO PREPARE FOR WINTER WAS A COMMUNITY EVENT NEIGHBOURS WOULD GATHER TO HELP WITH LOG CUTTING, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Father had been bringing out logs from the bush for weeks. Big trees, stripped of their small branches and hauled by one horse to the middle of the barn yard. It was a job he did over time, many weeks, and soon the pile was ready for the day the big saw

machine would come in our long lane to saw the trees into log sizes to fit the Findlay Oval. The Farmer's Almanac said it would be an early winter that year. So the sawing machine and all the neighbours from around, soon would arrive for the yearly job of preparing the wood to take us through the long winter ahead. Usually the snow was on the ground when woodcutting day arrived. But the Farmer's Almanac, like the Bible, wasn't to be taken lightly. I was allowed to stay home from school that day, as was my sister Audrey. Audrey, much older than I, would be needed to feed dinner to the men who had come to help a neighbour prepare for

winter. I could smell the meat roasting in the oven before I got out of bed. Beef and pork, side by side in the Findlay Oval. The biggest pot in the kitchen would hold potatoes, peeled the night before, and enough pies to feed all of Renfrew County were covered with tea towels on the bake table. The pine table wouldn't hold everyone, so two sawhorses with planks and covered with sheets were added to the kitchen, so that all the men could be fed at one time. All morning I would sit at the kitchen window and watch the big logs from our bush being fed into the saw machine, and marvel at how everyone worked so well together. There was no talk, the

machine drowned out every other sound, but I could see swirls of smoke from the men's pipes. As the cut logs fell to the ground, they were tossed into a pile and I watched it grow before my eyes. I wondered, as the pile grew, how we would ever manage to use up all the wood being cut that day. By noon hour the log cutting was finished, and the men filed into the kitchen, dropping their heavy coats at the door, and slipping out of their gum-rubbers. They filled the chairs around the table and the extra place, and dug into the bowls of steaming food like they hadn't eaten in days. The talk was about the winter ahead, and the summer past, and the Depression, and how lucky everyone was to have survived another year. It didn't take long for the meal to be over, and there was no dallying. This was farming. There was no time to sit for idle chatter. The neighbours filed out of the kitchen, said quick goodbyes and headed off to their own farms to finish their work day with their own chores. A team was hitched to the saw machine, now quiet, and headed out the lane. It wouldn't be idle for long. Soon another neighbour would be ready for it, and again, the neighbours would meet and do the job at hand. The pile of cut logs would stay

in the yard, but with Father working away at it with the axe every chance he had. Then it was my brother's job to carry the wood into the summer kitchen and pile it into neat rows against the wall. There it would be handy when the wood box had to be filled. The summer kitchen, which in the hot weather held the Findlay Oval, was cleared by then, and ready for the chopped wood. In one corner would be a special pile. This was kindling wood which Father had chopped from bigger logs and would be used to start the morning fire in the kitchen. That day I would again marvel at how the neighbours met and worked together to help each other out. I knew there was a Depression on ... goodness knows it was talked about, but to me on that special day, it could be happening in some other country, far, far way from Northcote. Sealed submissions will be received in envelopes clearly marked as to contents by the Town Clerk at her office in the Town Hall, 77 Beckwith Street North, Smiths Falls, Ontario, until 11:00 am local time on Tuesday December 18, 2018 for the provision of a pedestrian bridge(s) spanning the Rideau River between the Combined and Detached locks for Parks Canada on the Rideau Canal system. Purpose and scope: Provide a plan, design, cost and timeline for the provision and installation of a pedestrian linkage across the Rideau River (possibly adjacent to the Water Treatment Plant on Abbott Street) in the basin between the Combined and Detached locks for Parks Canada on the Rideau Canal system. A map of the area with water elevations is included in the appendix attached in the RFP package. Basic requirements for the licencing authorities of Parks Canada and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) indicate that any structure crossing the river must be above 121.5M elevation to ensure that structures are not exposed to high water. This level has been provided by the RVCA as an indication of the 100-year flood mark. Structures should be pleasing to the eye and fit with the surrounding area. The structure should also enhance the beauty of the waterfront and the Victoria Park basin. Along with measurements, design, cost and installation dates for the project proponents will provide a rendering or mock-up of the proposed design to aid in the selection of the winning design. It is the goal of the Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls to have a structure in place in the Spring of 2019 following the Spring freshet as water levels and environment allow. RFP’s will be opened in Public 11:05a.m. on Tuesday December 18, 2018, in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall, 77 Beckwith Street North, Smiths Falls, Ontario. Questions regarding this RFP may be directed to Art Manhire at the Community Services Department (tel: 613-283-4124 ext. 6101). It was very busy in Perth at Pet Valu last weekend. The Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Rob Clark from the Pinnacle Animal Hospital in Renfrew and his assistant J.C. from the Veterinary Services in Smiths Falls, who helped out during the three-hour microchip event. Dr. Clark saw 15 dogs who all came to be microchipped, while 10 cats and kittens found their forever homes. Thank you to everyone who visited us and gave loving homes to so many of our adoptable cats. Thank you to the staff of Pet Valu in

Perth for keeping your cool during this very busy weekend. Without you we would not have been able to find homes for so many needy animals in just two days. We hope to do it again. David Zimmerly volunteered his time to take some action pictures which can be viewed on our Facebook page.

This week's pets: Perryan Perryan is a lovely female cat with one eye surrounded by a black eyeliner and the other eye with no markings. She's friendly and affectionate and available at LAWS.

Nick Please meet Nick, a Harlequin tabby boy of about eight years, in Carleton Place at Pet Valu. The staff in the store tell us that Nick loves to snack and that he's the sweetest, most snuggly and affectionate cat ever! He loves belly rubs and he's very curious and adventurous, he is always purring and wanting to snuggle. Taffie and Richie Hello, from Taffie and Richie. We're brother and sister tabbies. We're about

seven months old and have been entertained in a foster home for a while. Our foster mom thinks it's time to move on as we're doing really well and grown to like people. We're playful love to eat and play. We hope we can stay together. Should you be interested, please call LAWS at 613-283-9308 and ask to meet us. SAVE THE DATE FOR HERITAGE PERTH CHRISTMAS HOUSE TOUR As kids, my sister and I loved walking in our neighbourhood on a snowy evening and sneaking glances into the lighted interiors of the homes we passed. There's something magical about a snapshot of a homey interior on a cold winter's day, especially around Christmastime, when decorations add such festive charm. Imagine my delight when I first heard about the annual Heritage Perth Christmas House Tour or-

ganized by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), Perth & District. Here was a rare opportunity to tour eight of our area's most unique and inspiring houses, and for a worthy cause. Over its 12year history, this annual event has raised close to $225,000 in support of advanced education for local women, as well as literacy and other educational initiatives in local schools and libraries. The community of Lanark will share the spotlight with Perth in this year's outstanding lineup of houses. Just a short 15- to 20-minute hop north, the former village was first settled in 1820 by Scottish immigrants who named it after the town of Lanark in Scotland. Its prosperous lumbering and textile in-

dustries left a fine heritage of stone and timber houses now neighboured by some quite spectacular newer builds. Our ticket-holders will experience the architectural diversity and picturesque setting of four Lanark area homes and may choose to linger awhile to explore new ground. Three families in Perth are also proudly opening their doors for the tour, conveniently near the amenities of restaurants, ac-
