NEW KEMPTVILLE SIGN PART OF ATTRACTION STRATEGY PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The first phase of the Downtown Kemptville Destination Signage Project is underway, with the recent installation of a new Kemptville sign located southbound on the 416 at the County Road 43 interchange. The second sign the other half of the first phase - will be installed northbound on the highway.
This first phase of the project was approved in the 2018 budget with a total of $60,000. The multi-year signage project, proposed by the municipality's planning and development department and economic development division, includes six phases of sign installations and beautification improvements for downtown Kemptville reaching $255,000. 'Kemptville' stretches across the new sign in

shows that he speaks Chinese, Danish, and French, as well as English. Prior to Hewitt's recruitment, Nicole Zywicki was the municipality's director of finance and treasurer. The position was split in two separate roles following Zywicki's resignation
large, reflective cream-coloured letters against a dark green background, with the phrase, 'The Heart of North Grenville' printed underneath. It is unclear who originally came up with the phrase, but it appears on conceptual images of signs in municipal reports on the project dating back as far as 2007. Designer of the sign, Tom Graham of TD Graham + Associates, said that although his design team in May, and the treasurer position was filled by Judy Carroll, leaving the director of finance position empty. Hewitt has also been appointed as deputy treasurer, giving him the authority to sign official documents as a municipal officer if the treasurer should be absent. Hewitt will commence his duties with the municipality on Nov. 15.

didn't come up with the phrase, they did not object to it, either, because the intent is appropriate as a short descriptor that places Kemptville in the context of North Grenville. Graham added that the phrase was likely not meant to serve as a motto or slogan for Kemptville but only to distinguish the town of Kemptville from the Municipality of North Grenville, just as the signs for the township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal say 'Spencerville.' The sign design, including the phrase, has been endorsed by council and members of the municipality's economic development advisory committee. It is just one component of a multi-phase strategy to bring more people to downtown Kemptville. The earliest report referring to the signage project, dated Sept. 11, 2007 recommends that directional signage be installed as an ef-
fort to attract visitors to downtown Kemptville, stating that retail development on County Road 43 draws customers away from the downtown core, and that planned development further threatens to erode the economic viability of downtown Kemptville. "The downtown core must attract investment, client-focused businesses, and customers," is stated in the report. Since the initial proposal of the project in 2007, the recommendation for directional signage to bring people to Old Town Kemptville has been identified in various studies, such as the 2009 and 2010 signage strategy updates. The next phases will see further signage installations and improvements such as a large destination sign at the Highway 416 interchange for County Road 44 and three location signs with service club plaques located on County Road 43

The financial breakdown of the project was presented by director of planning and development, Phil Gerrard, at the Dec. 18, 2017 committee of the whole meeting. "It all has to be done, so let's let them know where Kemptville is first, and once they get here, we'll have better direction in the future to take them down to the downtown core," Gerrard said. Aside from signage, other steps in the project include the replacement of 19 banner arms on existing street light poles on Prescott Street, the installation of 22 banner arms on existing hydro poles on Rideau, Sanders and Clothier streets, and the installation of 22 heritage street lights on existing hydro poles on Rideau, Sanders and Clothier streets.

EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com The Royal LePage Women's Fall Classic held in Kemptville draws curlers not only from across Canada, but around the world. The World Curling Tour event, hosted at the North Grenville Curling Club, is the largest all-women's curling event in Canada, east of Toronto. "It's huge, it's huge," said Doreen O'Sullivan, chair of the Royal LePage Women's Fall Classic, of the event's economic and social impact on Kemptville. "People who are coming here have coffee here, they go to restaurants here, they stay here." The event has grown since its beginnings in November 2006, and now hosts 24-teams with a prize pot of $21,000. "We have world champions that have played here," said Rick Baker, a fall classic volunteer, proudly of his curling club.
Over the years, the event has attracted many of the best women's teams from across Canada. In 2017, the classic became a truly Canada-wide event with entries from British Columbia to Newfoundland/Labrador. The event also boasts an international flavour, drawing teams from the United States, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Scotland and the Great Britain Olympic team. Top curlers in Canada have graced the ice at the classic, including the only two-time winner of the classic, Ottawa's Rachel Homan. Homan has won two Canadian championships and one world title, in addition to representing Canada at the 2018 Olympic Women's Curling Competition. This year, of the 10 countries participating in the 2018 Olympic Women's Curling Competition, six Canada, United States, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain and Russia -

The world class competition ran out of the North Grenville Curling Club between Thursday, Nov. 1, and Sunday, Nov. 4. Evelyn Harford/Metroland were represented by teams with players that have played in the fall classic, including Homan, and the gold medal-winning team, Anna Hasselborg, from Sweden. "It's really great for women's curling," said
O'Sullivan, a curler herself. "The men's curling tends to get more coverage. This event has really upped it." Danielle Inglis, playing as skip on team Inglis at the classic, just recently got back from representing Canada at the World Mixed
Curling Championship in Kelowna last month. "These kinds of events are huge for women's curling," she said. Inglis said the ability to have high-level competitions at tournaments like the fall classic before play downs is really important, and an integral part of the season. Points from tournaments like the fall classic can qualify players for oth-
er tournaments run by Curling Canada and the Grand Slam of Curling. Jim Dolan was recentlyinducted into the Kemptville Sports Hall of Fame for, among other things, his role in building up the fall classic and helping to promote competitive women's curling in Canada. Dolan saw the classic as a great opportunity to also promote his hometown and the curling club.

ST. MICHAEL TO COMMEMORATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST WORLD WAR IN REPLICA TRENCHES HIGH SCHOOL HOLDS SPECIAL REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY NOV. 9 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com In 2013, the First World War Trench Project at St. Michael Catholic High School saw more than 60 Grade 10 students build 200 metres of First World War replica trenches behind the school over the course of five weeks. Five years later, the project continues at St. Michael and the trenches are set to once again host the school's Remembrance Day ceremonies. "The students have been working diligently on the
First World War trench project since its inception in 2013, and this fall has been no exception," said teacher Fred Bortolussi. Each year, the students learn about life in the trenches and how they were such an integral part of the Great War. "Further to that understanding is the ability to actually recreate the trenches in the same size and fashion as in the First World War, using only the same tools that were available 100 years ago," said Bortolussi. Since St. Michael's trench project was featured on TV in 2013, two schools have taken on similar projects - another school in Ontario, and one located on the coast of France.
The trenches, which required the students to fill 1,500 sandbags, were completed to exact scale of the trenches on Vimy Ridge along the Western Front. The experience was far more than a history project to the students, as many have even spent the night in the authentic trenches to better understand what kind of environment those who've served had to live in. "As an educator, there is no better feeling than watching the students work on something they have learned in the classroom," said Bortolussi. "The enthusiasm, pride and ownership displayed by the students is heartwarming. I often run into past students of St. Michael who talk about their mem-

SALVATION ARMY KICKS OFF 16TH ANNUAL KETTLE CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISER ENABLES SALVATION ARMY'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com It's that time of year again, when jolly bell-ringing volunteers will be set up with their Salvation Army kettles to collect donations in support of the organization's community outreach efforts. "Money from the kettle campaign goes directly to our community - everything stays local," said Erin Wong, co-director at the Salvation Army in Kemptville. The six-week campaign begins Wednesday, Nov. 14 and is the one fundraiser that the Army counts on to
cover the entire year of programming. Six locations in Kemptville will host a kettle: Canadian Tire, Food Basics, B&H Your Community Grocer, Jonsson's Your Independent Grocer, and Walmart will begin on Nov. 14, and the LCBO will join the campaign Dec. 1. New for Kemptville this year, kettle campaign volunteers will be equipped with POS (point of sale) terminals, so those who would like to make a donation with their debit or credit card can do so. "This year, we have a number of families who use our services who are getting involved and wanting to give back," said Wong. "It's such a beautiful thing to see. We recognize that not everyone is able to, but it's really awesome to see that happening." Support services en-
abled with funds raised through the kettles include the food bank, snowsuit fund, emergency assistance, backpack campaign, crock pot cooking classes and more. "We rely heavily on this campaign to meet the needs that we have for many individuals and families in the community," said Wong. "It helps all of the social programs that we offer." The tradition of the kettle campaign began more than 100 years ago in 1891, when Salvation Army officer Captain Joseph McFee wanted to provide a free Christmas dinner to the poor of San Francisco. Now, 1,900 kettles are hosted by the Salvation Army across the country. The Salvation Army is the number one non-governmental social service provider in Canada.
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland The Salvation Army's annual kettle campaign kicks off Nov. 14, and six locations in Kemptville will be hosting a kettle to collect donations in support of the army's various support programs in the community. Pictured, members from the Kemptville OPP detachment, the Salvation Army, and the Royal LePage team take part in the kettle campaign at last year's OPP Christmas Charity Barbecue. Volunteers are still needed to run the kettles. To make it even more fun, consider volunteering with a friend or as part of a
team. Sponsoring a day of the kettle campaign is a great opportunity for local businesses to familiarize themselves with the com-
munity for a good cause. For more information or to register to volunteer, contact Lynn Dolliver at 613-258-3583.

AWARD MARKS 30 YEARS OF REMEMBERING MERRICKVILLE STUDENT ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com Rita Smith remembers young Raymond Jacques Jr.'s daily visits to the Merrickville bakery she used to work at in the 1980s. "Every evening after school, he used to come into the bakery to get a cookie or something to go with his chocolate milk," she said. "When he came in, he'd have just his allowance and used to ask the price of everything on the shelf. He was a great kid." Smith was on hand, along with Raymond's father, Raymond Jacques Sr., to present the 30th annual Raymond Jacques Jr. memorial award at Merrickville Public School (MPS)
Nov. 2. The award pays tribute to the late MPS student, who passed away Nov. 26, 1988 at age nine after falling through ice, and his love of cross-country running. Each year it is given to a student who demonstrates sportsmanship, dedication and excellence in the sport. Traditionally one student receives the award, but from this year on, a male and female student will be given the honour. This year's recipients were grade 4 student Codah Turcotte and Finley Yeoumans, who is in grade 5. "When others do the minimum amount of laps in practice, these two do the maximum amount before the bell rings," explained teacher Matt Bennett, who
serves as cross-country coach along with colleague, Colleen Perkins. "And at meets, they are at the line when they need to be and have nothing left in the tank at the finish line." Yeoumans and Turcotte both admitted it was "exciting" to earn the honour. They're in good company as well; Codah's brother Caden won the award in 2017, while Finley's brother Evan, was the 2014 recipient. "It makes me feel proud," Turcotte said. For 30 years, Jacques Sr. has returned to the school each year to present the award. "He loved track and field and running. It keeps his memory alive," he said. "I came here (MPS) myself

LEST WE FORGET WHAT THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR OUR FREEDOM WERE FIGHTING FOR Nov. 11, 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, or what contemporaries optimistically referred to as "la der des ders," meaning the last of last. So horrific were the gas bomb atrocities and trench warfare casualty lists, that the people who lived through it could scarcely imagine that two decades later their sons and daughters would see an even more destructive and painful war waged across virtually every continent.Critical civil and democratic rights were gained in Canada during the period between these wars. In 1918, women became eligible to vote in most provinces. The general strikes of 1919, borne out of the frustrations of rising inequality, resulted in increased union participation rates across the country, lifting wages and culminating in many of the benefits we now enjoy, such as employment insurance (1940). Many attribute these gains to the fact that the people who had lived through the hell of war wanted their sacrifices to mean something. So when despots rose in the 1930s, threatening world peace, they knew what they were fighting for, and they did what was necessary to preserve our freedom. Yet in 2018, many voters worldwide have chosen a different path. For a variety of reasons, voters in the U.S., Brazil and other western nations are choosing an eerily familiar path that resembles the sort of fascism that rose in the mid-20th century. As a result, the rights of groups such as people of colour and immigrants are at risk. We need look no further than the neo-Nazis who marched in Charlottesville in the summer of 2017, and the American president who defended them for a very literal example of how hate and intolerance are being condoned by leadership. It's not hard to the link this climate to terrorist violence, such as the recent Pittsburg synagogue shooting. We urge readers to consider what the heroes we remember on Remembrance Day were fighting for. Regardless of one's political beliefs, hopefully we can all agree that all people, regardless of gender, religion, ethnic background or sexual orientation, deserve to be treated equally and with respect. Our ancestors who served in wars aimed at preserving freedom would certainly want Canadians to be vigilant, and make sure what we are seeing in the U.S. never comes to our country. Lest we forget those who died for our rights and freedom. Lest we forget what they were fighting for.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY ABILITY TO VOTE SHOULDN'T BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED DEAR EDITOR:
Thank you very much for your recent editorials and coverage of the low voter turnout in the recent municipal election. I was very happy to see that you tipped your hat to those individuals (especially the younger ones) who had the courage to enter into the contests as candidates. These people surely know that there are some people who will find fault with virtually everything that they do, so full marks to them for their fortitude. You are correct to point out that not voting represents a virtual slap in the face to those in the past who struggled to create and expand our democratic institutions to the state that we currently enjoy. What is even more frustrating is that voting is now easier than ever - we can now do it without leaving our homes. The ability to vote is a gift that has been passed to us from previous generations. To be sure, it does take time and effort to examine the issues and
where the candidates stand on them, but this is the price of citizenship. And, when everything that is at stake is taken into account, the price isn't all that steep.
KERRY BADGLEY, KEMPTVILLE
GROUP SEEKING CLIMATE ACTION WITH UPDATE ON POLICIES DEAR EDITOR,
We delivered to MP Scott Reid a summary of the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. The report's message is that the door is closing on our chances for a healthy future. We have to cut our greenhouse gas emissions in half in 12 years. This message is effectively science's message, the same science that guides planes down to safe landings and makes your
cellphone work to access the world. The message is that we're in a perilous situation with respect to planetary warming. We asked Mr. Reid to pledge that, before the next election, he will propose, champion and support legislation to update Canada’s climate policies and bring them in line with the urgency called for in the IPCC report. The summary is available at http://report.ipcc.ch/ sr15/pdf/sr15_spm_final.pdf We ask that Mr. Reid be another voice within the Conservative caucus for climate action. The precautionary principle means we must take action to ensure our best chances for a safe future. Respectfully,
DOUG BARR, SUSAN BRANDUM, ANDREW C. MACDONALD, ANITA PAYNE DE GAIA

The Kemptville Campus Education and Community Hub is moving forward with the development of a marketing and communications strategy for the Kemptville Campus. Following a competitive Request for Quotation process during which six bids were received and reviewed, the Municipality of North Grenville has chosen local marketing firm TD Graham + Associates as the successful bidder. When complete, the marketing and communications strategy will iden-
tify communication gaps and recommend tools and tactics to raise awareness and promote Kemptville Campus news and activities. Besides informing the general public, residents and businesses, the strategy will serve to facilitate collaboration and interaction among current and prospective partners. The operation and maintenance of the renewed Kemptville Campus will be through a whollyowned not-for-profit corporation, which will operate at arm's length from the Municipality of North
Grenville. The mandate for the not-for-profit organization is to develop the Kemptville Campus Education & Community Hub as a multi-tenant site focused on climate change resiliency and low carbon innovation under the three guiding pillars of education and training, health and wellness, and economic development. It is expected that the strategy will be completed by the end of November.

PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Since his diagnosis in July, the North Grenville community has shown big love for local man Ryan Forbes and his family as he battles stage 4 appendiceal cancer. The #DieselsArmy movement represents friends, family, and supporters who managed to raise nearly $40,000 through a benefit concert in August featuring Ambush, a large number of volunteers, and the support of many local businesses, organizations, and individuals in the community. The proceeds were split equally between Forbes and CHEO. A Go Fund Me page initiated by Forbes' wife in July has raised more than $50,000 to help with medical costs as he enters his seventh round of chemotherapy, and the communi-
ty isn't pulling back their support anytime soon. Two local fitness studios, J-Glow Fitness and Conquer the Unhealthy You (CTUY) are teaming up to host No Pain No Gain: a full day of fun fitness classes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 at J-Glow (29 Clothier Street East). "Let's remember what 'No Pain No Gain' means to Ryan as he goes through chemo treatments," states the event's Facebook page. "Our health is nothing to take for granted. Let's support and create some positive awareness for a family that so many of us can't stop thinking about." A range of classes will be offered throughout the day, beginning with Glow Stretch, Core and Mobility at 8 a.m., Beginner Glow Pole Fitness at 9 a.m., CTUY Bootcamp at 10 a.m., GlowStix Fit Drumming at 11 a.m., Cardi-Glow Kickboxing at 12 p.m., CTUY
Bootcamp at 1 p.m., Get up & Glow at 2 p.m., GlowStix Fit Drumming (again) at 3 p.m., and CTUY Bootcamp (again) at 4 p.m. The classes will be $10 each, with all proceeds going to #DieselsArmy. Patty Baird, personal trainer and owner of Conquer the Unhealthy You (CTUY), grew up with Forbes. "It's all functional exercise, so it's easier on your joints and suitable for anyone," said Baird. "We're trying to keep it fun and make it mostly about the support." Baird will be instructing classes along with Jessica Goodhue and Stephanie Glandon of J-Glow, with a total of nine 45-minute classes throughout the day and only 15-minute breaks in between. "But it's only one day," said Baird. "Ryan has to do See ALL, page 22

DIANA FISHER WRITES ABOUT THE POWER OF SAFEPET OTTAWA DIANA FISHER Column
It's Sunday evening and we have just finished dinner. My granddaughter has climbed down from the table after eating her dinner, watched an episode of Paw Patrol, played the bongo drum along to the karaoke machine, changed the clothes on all her Barbies, given her doll a ride in the stroller (her doll may be wearing a cloth diaper but she is packing a plastic pistol) and she is now sitting in Grandpa's lap, beating him at "I Spy." Two of my daughters, aged 25 and 26, are having an animal draw-
ing competition on the easel. They are laughing so hard they are crying. In the kitchen my mother is washing dishes and singing along to Etta James. Life is good. In the past I have found myself in situations, more than once, that could have led to a far different reality. I have had more than one partner who started out as strong and protective but turned out to be controlling, manipulative and emotionally abusive. Once or twice that abuse became mildly physical, but they were smart. It was as if they knew they couldn't control me in that way and they had to be more creative. They attempted to alienate my friends and family - to scare them away from me. They attempted to become my sole source of support. Luckily I recognized each one of those unhealthy situations for what they were, and I managed
to eventually get out of them and start a new life. I know that tonight, someone out there is living in a very bad situation. Statistics tell us that one in three women will find themselves in some sort of abusive relationship. Maybe this woman's partner is worse than controlling. Maybe her partner is dangerous. She is trying to hold things together for herself and her children until she can make a plan for a new life. She wants to leave and go to a shelter, but she has a dog, a cat or both. Enter SafePet Ottawa. For the past five years, SafePet Ottawa has been placing pets in the care of loving foster homes while their guardians are in local Violence Against Women (VAW) shelters in the National Capital (and Leeds Grenville) Region. Someday some of the shelters may be able to take the pets
as well as the women and children. For now, they work closely with SafePet. Several local vet clinics have also stepped up to work with SafePet Ottawa, providing the vaccinations and care that the animals need to be healthy and happy. In many cases the animals didn't get the care they needed while they were part of a bad domestic situation, because care costs money and that was all part of the abuse and control. I was introduced to SafePet Ottawa through my daughter Milena, who is their marketing communications volunteer. Last weekend I was proud to be the MC at their third annual fundraising gala. I was focused on the itinerary so I didn't get as emotionally worked up over the reports and stories as I normally do, but I realize now, 24 hours after the fact, that the statistics stayed with
me. I am thinking about those one in three women who are living in a trap. Feeling like they have no options. The only thing that brightens their day is their dog, cat, snake, mouse, whatever ... that maybe their partner gave to them, as a gift, or as a means of control. Animals are sentient beings. They can sense and share our excitement and joy. They also absorb our fear, anger and anxiety. But instead of becoming equally worked up, they tend to lend an air of calm. Our pets can be our therapists in the worst situations. That is why they make such great companions. But imagine the woman living in the terrible situation, planning her escape. She can't imagine leaving her beloved dog or cat behind, in the hands of her abuser. So she stays. If she knows about SafePet Ottawa, she may take a
chance at a better life. When you save a pet, you can save two lives. If you have ever considered fostering an animal for a few months, I urge you to contact this organization. Through the simple act of looking after someone's pet, you could be helping them to leave a toxic life behind and find a brighter, safer, healthier future for themselves. What an easy way to do something good for someone else. Spread the word. Do some good.

KEMPTVILLE AUTHOR MICHAEL BLOUIN'S TOP TIPS FOR ASPIRING NOVELISTS PERSEVERANCE IS WRITER'S NUMBER ONE SUGGESTION PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com

A sales or marketing degree is a plus but attitude is key. Some of our best people have come from the retail and hospitality sectors. Competitive compensation, incentives and bonuses! Email your cover letter and resume to Adam Milligan – General Manager amilligan@metroland.com
It's NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and award-winning Canadian author and resident of Kemptville, Michael Blouin, hosted a writers' workshop at the North Grenville Public Library on Nov. 5. Here are six of his best tips for aspiring novelists. PERSEVERE Particularly if you're young, you may have no idea how important this really is. There are far more rejections in this business that there are acceptances. There are more writers who decide to give up than there are those who make it. Nobody makes them give up - they do that to themselves. I almost did it. It was the same day, actually - it was the same hour, that I got my career breaking acceptance. Any writer who never got published lacked perseverance. There is only one person who can stop you. Persevere. FIND YOUR VOICE This may actually be number 1, because you can persevere all you want, but if you don't have an authentic voice, at least from my point of view, there's very little point in being a writer. The world needs people who have something to say in an original
and in an authentic way. Sure, the world needs competent copying of previous styles and voices too, but it needs those things like it needs Tim Hortons coffee, which is not at all. Authentic voice is the hardest thing to attain, because it really can't be taught and it really can't be taught and it really can't be found outside of yourself (no matter how much you read - see Number Four). Sure, many commercially successful authors never find an original voice, but no artistically successful author has ever not had one. FIND/SEEK-OUT OTHER LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE This is so easy to do in the small world we live in now that there is no reason not to do it. Publishing can be a very closed shop. Let's face it; if you want to be a plumber, there is a very cut and dried path to achieving that goal. Your high school guidance teacher can tell you how to do it. Tell them you want to be a novelist and watch them scramble for pamphlets. There is no such path to becoming a published author, and anything resembling it can seem like a closely guarded secret. Sometimes, it is. Find the people who want to do, and who already do, what you want to do. This is the way it used to be for any field one wanted to pursue in life. In writing, it pretty much still is. READ You're already doing this, I know. Do more. Read everything, not just
the type of thing you see yourself writing. Read everything from classic literature to online hotel reviews. Decide what you admire and what you do not. Figure out why. Keep reading. Never stop reading. Read. PERSEVERE I know I've already said it. There are many people who will raise an eyebrow when you say that you aspire to be a novelist. Ignore them. They probably gave up on their dreams a long time ago or maybe they never actually had any. When you become a successful novelist, they'll still raise that eyebrow. Ignore them. Keep writing. Keep sending work out into the world when you think it's ready (you will think that it's ready long before it actually is, that's OK). Write. Send. Write. Send. Repeat. When you get rejections (and you'll get lots) send something else out the same day. Or send the same thing somewhere else. WRITE EVERY DAY Being a novelist is like pulling a rabbit out of your hat, only it's not some trick that anyone can do if they just learn it. There's actually no rabbit in there. And you still pull it out. Write every day and watch everything - watch everything all the time. And persevere - did I mention that? Blouin's next novel, Skin House, will be released in February 2019. To learn more about him and his publications, visit www.michaelblouinwriter.com

JEFF MAGUIRE ENCOURAGES READERS TO TAKE PART IN A LOCAL SERVICE JEFF MAGUIRE Column
This Sunday, Nov. 11, is Remembrance Day and as usual my wife and I will join the crowd at the cenotaph in our adopted hometown of Carleton Place to remember the dead from two world wars and the Korean conflict. It is also a good opportunity to remember and thank all Canada's military veterans. That includes everyone who has served our country during times of war or those who have served and those who have died in Canadian missions aimed at securing what is clearly a very elusive goal peace! This Nov. 11 is special because we will also be marking the centennial of the end of the First World War, on Nov. 11, 1918. More than 60,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders (Newfoundland didn't officially join Canada until 1949) perished in what, at the time, was called "the war to end all wars." Clearly things haven't quite worked out that way!
But on that Monday, 100 years ago this weekend, church bells rang out spontaneously across Canada as people celebrated the end of a bloody, four year conflict which claimed the lives of millions worldwide. The war also resulted in a further 172,000 Canadians being wounded. Countless others in our country suffered greatly as a result of the war, especially those whose loved ones were killed or injured during the fighting. This Sunday, through the efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion, Canada's largest veterans' organization along with churches, community councils and groups from coast-to-coast, church bells will ring 100 times in villages, towns and cities nation-wide to help the nation remember. Appropriately the national event has been dubbed "Bells of Peace." In Carleton Place additional Remembrance Day plans include songs performed by a choir during the traditional morning ceremonies and a tribute to local native and flying ace Captain Arthur "Roy" Brown. He is the Allied pilot who shot down famed German flyer Baron Manfred von Richthofen (the war's highest scoring fighter pilot with 80 "victories") on April 21, 1918. Every community has a slightly different plan although church bells will be rung in each case. In our

town the bell ringing will be heralded by the sirens of police and fire units which will sound for 30 seconds before the bells toll. Also included in the multifaceted ceremony of remembrance, relatives of the 47 Carleton Place residents who died during WW I will ring hand bells at the Cenotaph while the church bells sound. Communities across the country have similar plans for this very special day including of course the Bells of Peace initiative. I think it should be noted that nearly 650,000 Canadians served the country and the British Empire during what is often called "the Great War." In addition hundreds of thousands of men and women supported the effort through their work in war industry or other necessary activities related to the conflict. That is significant because, in 1918 for example, Canada was a relatively small country in terms of population with just over eight million residents. By comparison more than 37 million people currently call Canada home! Today, considering what is happening in our modern world, peace seems like a pipe dream. To me it's more elusive than ever. But this Sunday, Remembrance Day 2018 and the 100th anniversary of a distant war, we have an opportunity to listen to the Bells of Peace and pray that, somehow, peace will come to our topsy-turvy world!

PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Did you know that more than 60 local families rely on the Salvation Army's food bank in Kemptville on a weekly basis? Poverty is among us whether we can see it or not, but thanks to the collaboration of local churches, the food bank shelves will be replenished once again this December to feed families in need. The Fill-a-Bag campaign is in its 10th year, and so far, 14 teams have signed up to distribute more than 6,000 large grocery bags to homes in North Grenville on Sunday, Nov. 25 in hopes that residents and families will fill them with non-perishable food items. The teams will return to collect the filled bags on Sunday, Dec. 2 before more hours are spent sorting the donations. The campaign is organized by the collaboration of the North Grenville Community Church (NGCC) and the Salvation Army. This year, veteran co-ordinators Charlie and Debbie Stewart are passing the torch on to PasSee COMMUNITY, page 26

The 10th annual Fill-A-Bag campaign, an initiative by local churches including the Salvation Army and the North Grenville Community Church, will begin with the distribution of bags on Sunday, Nov. 25 to homes throughout North Grenville. Volunteers will return to pick up the filled bags on Dec. 2. Romeo and Ryder Say hello to Romeo and Ryder, two seven-month-old friends (maybe siblings) who have a lot of love to give. They just need a patient partner as they might require an extra minute to find their courage. However, underneath their timid exterior is a reservoir of love and wisdom. If you are patient enough to tap into it, they want nothing more than to show their affection. Please have a little understanding, but they promise once they feel safe, they'll be loyal to you all of their days. They would love to be adopted together. Will you take a chance on them? You'll never regret it! They are available at LAWS. Cruz Meet Cruz, a friendly, little

Pet Valu's Perth October 2018 Giving Thanks campaign was a huge success. Close to $1,200 worth of food, supplies, toys and more was collected. We at LAWS would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the customers of Pet Valu Perth for their continued support. We're so very grateful for a community who believes in assisting us. More than ever we needed it as we had a rough year with many mouths to feed and it's not over yet and never will be. Of course we couldn't have done it without the excellent and professional help of the staff of Pet Valu Perth. They always open their store, arms and hearts for our cats! One of the most famous classes offered at J-Glow is the GlowStix Fit Drumming, which Goodhue compares to the musical movement, STOMP, as it's percussion-driven exercise that
feels more like dancing. "It doesn't even feel like you're working out - you're just having fun," she said. Goodhue hopes the No Pain No Gain event will add to the overwhelming amount of positive energy that the #DieselsArmy movement has already generated so far. "The support of a small community like this goes a long way, and that's what's really inspiring us," she said. Goodhue added that positivi-
ty is contagious, and if people want to show their support but don't necessarily want to work out, they are welcome to pop in and make a donation. "If you know him at all, he's there in the back of your mind," said Baird. "Every day, you're thinking about him." Those interested in participating are asked to please arrive 15 minutes early to ensure that the class schedule moves along smoothly, to bring a water bottle, and to dress comfortably.

During National Senior Safety Week, which takes place annually from November 6 to 12, the Canada Safety Council (CSC) shines a light on issues affecting Canadian seniors’ health, independence and safety. The CSC’s awareness campaign this year focuses on digital security for seniors. Working alongside Telus Wise, the organization is striving to provide seniors with relevant educational resources and programs. INTERNET USE BY SENIORS IS ON THE RISE The percentage of internet-users older than 65 is on the rise. According to the 2016 General Social Survey conducted by Statistics Canada, from 2013 to 2016 the number of internet users rose from 65 to 81 per cent among Canadians aged 65 to 74 and from 35 to 50 per cent among Canadians aged 75 and over. TELUS WISE SENIORS Internet safety for seniors is an increasingly important issue. Therefore, the CSC and Telus are collaborating to offer seniors free, in-store workshops on digital security. Information can be found on the Telus Wise Seniors webpage (wise.telus.com/wiseseniors).
• Keep your personal financial information safe. Never provide your bank account or credit card numbers over the phone or Internet, or by email. Do not share your personal identification numbers (PINs) or online banking passwords with anyone – not even family members or close friends. • If you shop online, shop from reputable retailers and use one credit card to pay for your purchases. This will make it easier to track your transactions and spot suspicious activity. Change this credit card every year. • Review your credit card and debit statements regularly. If something doesn’t look right, contact your financial institution right away. • Donate only to reputable charities that you know and trust. Do not donate money to an unknown charity. If you want to donate to specific charities, directly contact them to safely make a donation.

Helping seniors stay safe on the internet
Prevention Tips
• If you think a deal sounds too good to be true, it is. Walk away. • Never rush into a purchase because a salesperson is pressuring you. Take some time to think about the purchase. Be especially wary of apparent doorto-door repair or salespeople, for example, who appear friendly but insist on entering your home or pressuring you to make a purchase. Tell them you need several days to think about it,or choose not to open your door. • When you are out running errands, leave your extra credit and debit cards in a safe place at home. This will help protect you in case you lose your purse or wallet. • If you lose or misplace your debit or credit cards, contact your financial institution as soon as possible. • Order your free credit report at least once a year
For those who prefer learning from home, the webpage provides a treasure trove of tips for using the internet and smartphones safely. Especially valuable is the Telus Wise Seniors Guide, which addresses such topics as creating secure internet passwords and shopping on reputable websites. COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, BUSINESSES, AND SCHOOLS ALSO HELP OUT WITH CAMPAIGN Continued from page 19
tor Thomas Eng and Susan Hoftyzer of the NGCC to take on the planning of the bag distribution routes and volunteers. "It's wonderful to see the whole community participate," said Eng. "Almost all of the local churches help out in some way, and it's great to see them work together." Community organizations, businesses, and schools also help out with the campaign each year. New distribution routes have been added to this year's map to accommodate the community's growth. Each bag will come with a description of the food items that are needed most, including items that the Salvation Army will specifically use to create Christmas hampers for local families who might otherwise not get to enjoy a special Christmas dinner. On top of replenishing the food bank and making a Christmas dinner possible for many families, the Fill-a-Bag campaign sends families home with extra groceries and stocking stuffers. "On distribution day, the families will leave with a Christmas basket, two full bags of groceries to last them until the food bank reopens after the holidays, and toys," said Erin Wong, director at Salvation Army along with her husband, Calvin. "Then, we have an amazing response of donors and businesses who will give us things like books, mittens, toys and other

special items so people can take what they need. It's very heartwarming and an incredibly emotional day." The campaign typically stocks the food bank for nearly a full year, which is supplemented by weekly donations collected through other local churches and grocery stores. A few new routes have been added to the map so the campaign will reach some of the newer housing developments in town. "It's amazing - the generosity is really unprecedented," said Erin. Volunteers are still in demand to help out with the distribution and collection of bags on Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, as well as the sorting of food items on Dec. 2 with the Salvation Army team. The donations will be stored and organized within the building of the former Giant Tiger, located in the B&H mall at 200 Sanders Street. Helpers at the donation station will be treated to a pizza buffet and there will be inflatables on-site to keep the kids entertained. "It's kind of an awesome community event," said Erin. "People will come in and be completely floored by the sheer volume of food." Anyone who'd like to help out as a bag distributor/collector or donation sorter can register to volunteer at the North Grenville Community Church's website at ngccfm.ca/fill-a-bag.

SWERDFAGER, Sandra June
November 9, 1941October 28, 2018 Sandra passed away, unexpectedly, in her sleep, on Sunday. She was the beloved daughter of the late Ken and the late June Swerdfager, the treasured sister of John Swerdfager (the late Sandy) and Melinda Glew (Tom), and the dear aunt of Wendy Swerdfager (Lee Roy). Sandra was a truly unique, creative and funny woman. She loved to make everyone laugh and had a very kind heart. She taught us all a lot about life. She was so loved and will be greatly missed by all of us. She has a special place in our hearts. Sandra lived at Rideau Regional Centre for over 50 years. She was a friend to everyone. She enjoyed many activities and outings especially singing in the choir and going to church. She had wonderful care and was very happy there. When RRC closed Sandra was very fortunate to find a home at Lera with The Mills Community Support along with two of her very close friends. She was much loved by all the staff and residents there even when she was feisty. They were truly a family and she loved all of them. Last year she moved to Hwy. 43, also with The Mills, and found the same kind and compassionate care there. I want to thank Julie and all the other staff of angels at both Lera and Hwy. 43 for their dedication and kindness in taking such wonderful care of Sandra. She was so very lucky to have all of them and she loved them all. We love them too. Sandra will be laid to rest beside her parents in a private family ceremony. A celebration of her life will be held at her home in late November. For those wishing to, a donation to Mills Community Support would be greatly appreciated. FIELDING 2x44 In memory of my grandmother, Elizabeth who passed away “50” years ago, November 10, 1968. If I could visit heaven even for a day, Maybe for a moment the pain would go away. I’d put my arms around you and whisper words so true, That living life without you, is the hardest thing to do. No matter how I spend my days, No matter what I do, No mornings or evenings, When I don’t think of you. Fifty years have passed dear Gran, But my memories of you are always on my mind. Sitting in the rocker, sipping tea loaded with sugar, Threading needles with different colors of thread. Waking up to my glass of water in the morning, The boiled egg for breakfast, a piece of eggshell always in my bowl. So many loving moments, Gran. When I think of you often, my tears fall! I deeply loved you, and miss you so so much! Forever and ever your granddaughter, Karen P.S. Gran, I’m now a Grammie too! I have three beautiful grandbabies: “Allison, Dane and Frank”. You would have loved them so much Gran! “Sending hugs to heaven”
BRENDA FINNERTY O’NEIL In loving memory of a dear wife, mother and grandmother who passed away 20 years ago on November 10. We’re missing you a ittle more Each time we hear your name, We’ve cried so many tears, Yet our hearts are broken just the same. We miss our times together, Things in common we could share, But nothing fills the emptiness, Now that you’re no longer there. We’ve so many precious memories, To last our whole life through, Each one of them reminders, Of how much we’re missing you. Forever loved and missed Doug ~ Mom/Grandma What is home without a mother? All things this world may send, But when we lost our darling mother, We lost our dearest friend. But all we can do dear mother, Is go and tend your grave, And leave behind tokens of love, To the best mother God ever made. So you who have a mother, Cherish her with care, For you’ll never know the heartache, Till she is no longer there. Miss you and love you always Jason, Jeremy and Benji and families
FOSTER, Russell - In loving memory of a dear husband and friend, dad and poppa who left us November 4, 2017. Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We try to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name. You did so much for all of us, Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. Those special years will not return, When we are all together, But with love in our hearts, You walk with us forever. STANLEY - In loving memory of Madeline Stanley who passed away November 13th, 2001. His Masterpiece God took the fragrance of a flower The majesty of a tree, The gentleness of morning dew The calm of a quiet sea, The beauty of the twilight hour The soul of a starry night, The laughter of a rippling brook The grace of a bird in flight, The tender care of an angel The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of an eternity The depth of a family’s need Then God fashioned from these things A creation like no other, And when His masterpiece was through He called it simply....mother..

SUCH GARMENTS WERE NOT COMMON IN RENFREW COUNTY IN 1930S, COLUMNIST WRITES MARY COOK Column
It would be the second time I would see a set of Stone Marten Furs. The first time was when Mother's friend from New York came to visit and she had a set around her neck, which I was sure were alive. Sitting in the back seat of the Model T, I had a good look at them, and realized they were dead as door nails! Why anyone would wear a pair of dead animals
around their neck was beyond me. And then I saw, for the second time in my life, another pair, and again they were draped around someone's neck. Mother had taken me with her to a meeting in Renfrew, where a bunch of women who belonged to local Women's Institutes were gathered together in a church hall to talk about what they would do to help the poor families in the area. I couldn't imagine anyone poorer than we were, but there they sat discussing ways and means of lending a helping hand to those who didn't have enough money to even put food on their tables. We ate like kings on the farm. There was always a smoke house full of meat, chickens, geese and ducks, a sauerkraut barrel and salt
pork in the summer kitchen, and enough vegetables, pickles and preserves in the cellar to feed half of Renfrew County. We had lots of food. We just didn't have any money. Well, that day in a church hall, a woman who seemed to be running things, was sitting right in front of us, and around her neck was a set of Marten furs, exactly like the ones Mother's friend from New York wore! Right away I lost interest in the talk from the woman at the front of the hall. I leaned forward in my chair so that I was just inches away from the little beady black eyes that were looking back at me. I could tell they weren't real, but tiny little glass beads. And the mouth of one Stone Marten was firmly attached to the body of the one beside it. Like it was biting it!
I felt the eyes were staring right at me, but any way I moved in my chair, I couldn't get away from them, and it was almost like I was responsible for their being wrapped around someone's neck. I had no idea what animal the furs had come from, but I was quite sure we didn't have any like them in Renfrew County. I was dying to touch the one that was stretched right across the back of the woman's neck. But then I wondered, what if it came to life? So I had to content myself with just staring at its little beady black eyes. It seemed the meeting was about to come to a close, because the woman who was standing at the front of the hall announced that tea would be served, and asked the woman with the animals around her neck if she
would say grace. It looked like she was more than happy to oblige, because she jumped up, set her purse on the floor, and unwrapped the furs from around her neck, flinging them onto the back of her chair. They missed connecting, and landed square on my lap, now with four black beady eyes staring at me. I let a war-hoop out of me, flung the furs onto the floor, and slid over to Mother who wasn't at all pleased at my carry-on. I wouldn't even bend down to pick them up, and I couldn't wait to get back to Northcote to tell everyone about the woman who wore animals wrapped around her neck. My brother Emerson didn't believe me and said I was making the whole story up. As always my sister Audrey settled the issue once and for all. She had a copy of
a movie magazine, well read, and she opened it up to a page where one of the famous stars of the day was wearing a set of Martin Furs exactly like the ones I had just seen in Renfrew. As far as I was concerned, if I never again came close to another set of furs wrapped around someone's neck as long as I lived, it would be too soon for me! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
