REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY MARKS 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST WORLD WAR Continued from page 1
membrance Day. "We will remember them - four simple words, and yet, they carry a tremendous impact for many of us," said Pam Owen of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 212 in Kemptville. Owen noted that all of the brave men and women who served in the First World War have passed on, and that each year, there are fewer and fewer left among us that have served in the Second World War. "We believe that they have paved the way to peace, and yet, military police and fire services continue to serve in wars and conflicts around the world. 'We will remember them' begins to take on a renewed meaning." During her speech, Owen addressed pertinent issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the rate of suicide among veterans, as well as the lack of affordable hous-
ing for them. Legion efforts to record veterans' stories have helped to preserve the memories, but Owen said it's difficult for veterans to open up and relate their experiences. "It reopens the memories that they've kept hidden for years, and often, decades," she said. "They are hesitant to speak with family members, as they fear they will not be understood. Many don't want to speak and bring back the pain of war, nor the pain of losing comrades and friends." Owen went on to discuss the needs of veterans that have changed over the course of history, and today are significantly unmet. Initiatives, such as the use of therapy dogs to comfort veterans living with PTSD and other supports are gaining in strength, but the statistics of those who these services don't reach cannot be ignored. "Across Canada, there's an estimated 2,600 veterans

Despite social programming through Veterans' Affairs and legions, Owen said there still is much to be done. She spoke about the rate of suicide among veterans, many cases which occur within

months of a soldier returning home, and the impact that suicide has on their loved ones. "Many are falling through the cracks, where supports have not been able to make a difference. Family and friends are all impacted when someone feels such pain that taking their own life seems like the only way out." Owen described PTSD
as a debilitating illness, affecting so many of our serving military, veterans, and first responders, and giving new meaning to the phrase, 'we will remember them,' as it invites us to reach out, to listen, to be present, and to support the initiatives that can help those who need it. "Many of our vets continue to suffer in silence," she continued. "Suffering
physically or mentally, they need to know that help is available. A reason for getting up every day. A reason to hold on." "When we see vets on Remembrance Day, with tears in their eyes ..." Owen became overwhelmed with emotion. "This is hard," she paused for a moment. "We are remembering the stories, the memories, and the events - they all trigger a response," she said, while comrade Sharon Murray placed her hand on Owen's shoulder to comfort her. "Being present here today, standing in solidarity with one another, and supporting veterans and serving members, shows the future generations that we will remember them," Owen concluded. Readings of poems and prayers followed before the Last Post was played and the crowd shared a minute of silence. Military personnel then lead a parade back to the legion where the public was invited for refreshments.

NEW COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION STRIVES TO IMPROVE COLLABORATION, COHESION PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com North Grenville may be a small community, but there are many passionate volunteers and community organizations here, working to improve the quality of life. This was especially evident at the first meeting for the Kemptville & District Community Association (KDCA), held at Grenville Mutual Insurance on Nov. 6, which was attended by representatives of more than 45 different local community groups. The intent of the meeting was to identify common needs and concerns of local organizations, and determine the scope of the new community association's focus. assets and things that need improvement. "There are many groups in our community working to improve life here, and we know that they tend to work in silos a lot of the time, so we thought we could benefit from improved communication between groups," she said. Some of the issues that Rivet-Stevenson identified as a result of a lack of communication between community groups includes the double-booking of events on the same day, which tends to split volunteer efforts and residents' dollars. She also spoke about events like Canada Day that could be improved by the collaborative organization of a community association. "We're not trying to reinvent the wheel, and we're certainly not in competition with you," she said. "We simply want to make it a little easier for everyone. We want to find out where we can focus our energy, and how we can help." Katie Nolan, an agricultural and rural economic development advisor with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs led a series of exercises to familiarize the community groups with one another and discuss what is working and what isn't for their organizations' success. The room was full of representatives from faith groups, local businesses, charities, service clubs, arts and culture groups, children's organizations and more. Attendees were asked to write down 'What if' statements based on the accomplishments they'd like to see from their organizations. "Then ask yourselves, 'What would it take?'" instructed Nolan. "Write the action that would need to be taken to reach that goal. Even if it's the smallest first step." Attendees were asked to sit next to at least two unfamiliar faces, and as a result, the majority of them learned about a community organization that they

hadn't heard of before. "We are a small community, and yet, we still have some work that we can do on cohesion of the different groups, and that's exactly what the KDCA is hoping to do," said Nolan. Following exercises involved identifying the needs of the community groups, both shared and unique. The concerns raised were discussed as Nolan organized each need by six categories: engagement, volunteers, promotion, collaboration/networking, resources, and communication. The attendees discussed how they could help one another find the resources they need in order to achieve their goals and improve their services in the community. "It's really about making
the work of local organizations easier and more cohesive," said Nolan. "We need to make sure that we're celebrating and making more visible the accomplishments that are already happening here, all the time." Following the meeting, Embleton said that she received 27 feedback forms from participants, many reporting that they had met more than seven new people. Victor Desroches, representing the Bishop's Mills Community Association, expressed his contentment with the meeting; "I came here with suspicion, and left with hope." Kemptville has proven once again to be the ideal scary movie location. After Oz Perkins' flick, The Blackcoat's Daughter, starring Emma Roberts was filmed at the Kemptville campus in 2015, another horror, The Monster, was filmed in town in 2016. Now, Canadian production company The MOB Entertainment is getting ready to film a new thriller, and they are looking for 14 actors to help out in scenes that will be filmed at the Kemptville District Hospital (KDH). The movie, called Flawless, is a thriller starring Canada's own Sarah Fisher, who starred in Degrassi: The Next Generation, as well as her own project, 2016's Kiss and Cry, for which she was associate producer. Flawless is the story of a woman who was disfigured by her now deceased stalker. After undergoing plastic surgery, she begins her new life, but is haunted by her stalker's image. Her sanity is questioned by her friends and co-workers until the climax of the film, where there is a plot-twisting discovery. The MOB Entertainment is based out of Gloucester. One of their recent productions, The Sweetheart Con, is currently featured on Netflix. "We have been making movies in the greater Ottawa area since 2013," said Ainslie S Wiggs, a casting director with the project. "Our crew is made up of Ottawa locals and our cast is entirely Canadian." Wiggs said they are looking for 14 background performers to play medical staff and patients. The scenes at KDH will be filmed on Saturday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 25. Pay is $14/hour with lunch and snacks provided. Those interested are asked to send a recent photo and their phone number to AinslieCasting@gmail.com.

You can dress up as Rudolph, an elf, or Santa himself for the inaugural Santa Shuffle fun run, set for Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Ferguson Forest Centre. The popular fundraiser has been held at 38 locations across Canada for 29 years, with roughly 1,600 runners annually, and has finally made its way to North Grenville. The Santa Shuffle supports community outreach programs that are offered by the Salvation Army throughout the year. All of the proceeds raised through the event will stay in the North Grenville community. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes for the run, but it is not mandatory. Kate Stacey, race assistant, says well over half of the runners at the Santa Shuffle in Ottawa dress up. "It just makes it even more fun, and it's an easy way to keep warm." One year, Stacey said a group of friends ran the race dressed up as Santa and his nine reindeer, reins and all. The event will include a 1 km Elf Walk and a 5 km fun run, and all runners will receive a special medal at the end of the race for participating. The hope is to have 100 runners register for the first-ever Santa Shuffle in Kemptville. Participants who fundraise more than $50 will be entered into draws for Running Room gift cards, and every runner will also receive a 'race kit' loot bag as a thank-you for their support. Race director, Laura Valcour, says many local businesses are generously donating prizes, food, and items for the race kits. "We are encouraging residents to sign up and help support our local Salvation Army who work tirelessly in our community to help those in need," said Valcour. Stacey volunteered to help organize the run as a way of giving back to the Salvation Army after the
Nationwide, Santa Shuffle events are typically paired with a local Running Room store that sponsors the event, and since there is no Running Room in Kemptville, one of the Ottawa stores will be taking it on. Aside from the Santa Shuffle, the kettle campaign is the only other fundraiser throughout the year that the Salvation Army hosts to raise funds in support of all their social programming. The event will be another great way for local high school students to acquire their community service hours. Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact race director Laura Valcour at LauraValcour@icloud.com.

SEASON OF GIVING
While it's important to give back when we can throughout the year, the generosity of community is particularly high during the holiday season. Non-profit organizations depend on support at Christmas to last them throughout the year. One of the most recognizable charitable events over the holidays is the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign. Not only do the kettles build awareness of the Salvation Army's efforts, but they also raise critical funds to provide social services, food bank assistance, emergency disaster services, as well as housing and shelter to those in need. The kettle campaign began more than 100 years ago in 1891, as a way for Salvation Army officer Captain Joseph McFee to provide a free Christmas dinner to people in San Francisco. Fast forward to today, where there are 2,000 kettle locations across Canada. The Kemptville Salvation Army kicked off its 16th annual six-week kettle campaign on Nov. 14, which supports the organization for entire year of programming. Six locations will be set up with kettles and for those who don't keep a lot of cash on them, it's easier than ever to donate at the kettles. Volunteers will be equipped with point of sale terminals to allow for debit and credit card transactions. This Friday (Nov. 16), campaigns in Smiths Falls, Carleton Place and Almonte will roll out. The Settlers Ridge Centre will help launch the Smiths Falls campaign, while Patrice's Your Independent Grocer in Almonte and Mitchell's Your Independent Grocer in Carleton Place will kick off the festivities in those communities. Volunteers are still needed to ring the bells at the kettle locations throughout Lanark, Leeds and Grenville. If you're interested in spreading some Christmas cheer, contact your local Salvation Army. Another local holiday tradition, the Hinton Auto Group's Build a Mountain of Food, kicked off its community food blitzes in Carleton Place and Almonte Nov. 10. The annual campaign raises funds for food banks in Carleton Place, Perth, Smiths Falls, Lanark, Westport, Elgin, Portland, Merrickville, Athens and Delta. Food blitzes will take place every Saturday from Nov. 10 to Dec. 15 and the campaign will also be stationed at CP Holiday Train stops in Smiths Falls and Perth, as well as local Santa Claus parades. There's also the United Way Lanark County, which launched its annual campaign Oct. 1, that continues through to January. The United Way, which funds programs and initiatives in focus areas on children and youth, poverty and strong communities, is hoping to raise $10 for each person in Lanark County and Smiths Falls.

CHRISTMAS MARKET TO SUPPORT LAWS, HOUSE OF LAZARUS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A few Kemptville Farmers' Market merchants have found a new way to give back this holiday season. The inaugural Mistletoe Fair will be a unique Christmas craft show as all proceeds from vendor table rentals at the event will be split equally between House of Lazarus (HOL) and the Lanark Animal Welfare Sanctuary (LAWS). Beth Tilbury, local baker and owner of Celebrate
Cakes usually sells her gourmet cupcakes at the farmers' market. She teamed up with two other market bakers, Nancy Olive and Joanne Krock, to put on the Mistletoe Fair. "We call ourselves totally baked," Tilbury laughed. The three organizers are co-ordinating the event on a volunteer basis. Tilbury says the event will showcase local crafters and artisans, bakers, farmers, and more in a stress-free shopping environment, as running mar-

A variety of vendors from all over the region are taking part in the craft show, including Clearydale Honey, Sincere Preserves, Willow & Rose, Country Creations, Allium Farms, and more. The event is officially sold out, with 48 vendors signed up. When asked how she decided what local charities would benefit from the event, Tilbury said that supporting HOL was a 'nobrainer,' as their work to help North Grenville residents in need is so important and appreciated. Tilbury has more of a personal connection to LAWS, as her pet Harry 'the wonder cat' came from the animal sanctuary, and when he died, she said people came from as far as Ot-

Kemptville's loss is Perth's gain. After the loss of the University of Guelph's Kemptville campus in recent years, Algonquin College has picked up the ball and is now running into the agricultural education business at its Perth campus - just don't expect to see cows grazing by the side of Craig Street. The campus will now be home to two new programs starting in the fall of 2019 - a two-year Ontario college diploma in business agriculture, and a one-year Ontario college certificate in business fundamentals. "We would not be talking about this program if Kemptville College was still up and running," said professor Martin Savard during an interview in the office of Perth college campus dean Christopher Hahn, on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 6. "We are trying to fill the gap." Not only are they filling a gap, but they are picking off top Kemptville College talent in filling their teaching roster. "We need something in eastern Ontario," said Savard. "We've got a good roster of teachers. Several of them are from the old Kemptville College." In fact, Algonquin is getting "great support from Kemptville alumni," said Sara Munroe, academic chair of the Perth campus. The course is also reaching out to the agricultural industry to find out what their needs are. He explained that "the industry came to us. They had an idea ... We've put a lot of academic effort behind this. They've told us what they need, so they get the most out of it." Farming life Savard comes from a farming family, as does his wife, and will be teaching in the agricultural business program. He continues to be connected to the agricultural community, running a goat hobby farm outside of Carleton Place. Savard is acting as a facilitator with the program, whose board, he says, is comprised of "the who's who of agriculture in eastern Ontario," said Savard. The farming life is never an easy one, and today's family farm is in a state of flux. But he stresses that "there is a future; it's still a huge industry. It is a huge contributor to the economy," he said. Part of the change, however, lies in the fact that "agricultural output is growing, [but] the number of farms is decreasing." Savard pointed to a study by the Ontario Agricultural College, in Alfred, Ont., which found that there are four jobs for every one agricultural graduate in Ontario, down on the farm and off. The agricultural program comes with a

For those who expect to see a red barn and plowed fields to start popping up around the Perth campus, "we don't have fields here," said Savard with a smile. "We don't have a barn here," and there will not be a working farm on the premises. "It's so complicated to maintain one," said Savard. "The technology is evolving so quickly." Instead, "we will take students to the providers," said Savard, taking students, literally, on field trips - "dozens and dozens of farms," to see different farming methodologies, styles, and products. Business program The Perth campus will be drawing on the "School of Business expertise," from the college's main Ottawa campus, which "informed a lot" of how the Perth program was developed, said Munroe. It comes with a built-in "exit strategy," whereby students who feel that if maybe the agricultural business program is not for them, they can transfer to the business program, and vice versa, and they can transfer any earned credits. The campus will be hosting an invitation-only community consultation on Wednesday, Nov. 14, to poll stakeholders on the best uses for the college space. "Enrolment is up this semester," said Savard. In fact, the heritage carpentry and joinery program has added a third sector for this semester. "That's a very active and healthy program," said Munroe. "Early Childhood Education [has] also witnessed higher than average interest this fall." While several programs were cancelled at the Perth campus earlier this year, Munroe explained that "the many has shrunk this fall, [but] we're seeing some positive growth."
NGCC WELCOMES GUEST SOLOISTS FOR CHRISTMAS CONCERTS ANIA HEJNAR AND BEVERLY MCARTHUR WILL JOIN NGCC FOR HANDEL'S 'MESSIAH' PERFORMANCES While the North Grenville Concert Choir has been hard at work rehearsing the choral pieces of Handel's Messiah, under the direction of Phillip Konopka, we are very excited to welcome some wonderful and talented guest soloists who will be joining us for our performances in December. Soprano Ania Hejnar is sure to delight the audiences with her exquisite and angelic voice. She holds a Master of Music from the University of Ottawa and upon graduating, Hejnar was a member of Opera Lyra Ottawa's Young Artists Program, performing a variety of roles. As a first prize win-
ner in CMC, Hejnar performed in numerous concerts with the Orchestre Métropolitain, and her first-place win in the ABIVC led to her Carnegie Hall debut. She has appeared as the soprano soloist in Haydn's Creation, Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor and Exsultate, Jubilate, Vivaldi's Gloria and Schubert's Mass in C. Hejnar made her debut at the Maison Symphonique de Montréal as soprano soloist in Orff's Carmina Burana. Aside from performing the national anthem at venues like TD Place and Parliament Hill, including performing for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Hejnar recently performed for Governor General Julie Payette. You can hear her voice on Remigio Pereira's (former member of The Tenors) new solo album, VOX INAUDITO.
Submitted/NGCC Soloists, soprano Ania Hejnar (left) and mezzo-soprano Beverly McArthur will be joining the North Grenville Concert Choir for their Christmas performances of Handel's Messiah in Kemptville on Saturday, Dec. 8. Singing the alto solos will be mezzo-soprano Beverly McArthur, who holds a Master of Music degree in Opera from the University
of British Columbia. She has been praised for her rich voice and excellent character portrayals. She has performed in

NORTH GRENVILLE LAUNCHES SITES OF REMEMBRANCE PROJECT JUST IN TIME FOR NOV. 11 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The Sites of Remembrance project, brainchild of Roy Brown, is intended to serve as an online memorial, highlighting a collection of buildings and locations in North Grenville that pay tribute to those who served in the military. Brown researched and wrote all of the content for the project. In his early reports to council, he stated, "a visit to the Municipality of North Grenville would not be complete without a tour of local sites of remembrance and tributes to Canadian veterans of all wars and mil-

itary conflicts." The webpage includes photos and the history of sites such as Veterans Commemorative Park, North Grenville Historical Society, St. John's United Church, Veterans Way, the Kemptville Cenotaph, and more. Rowena Cooper, chair of the municipality's heritage advisory committee, presented an award to Brown as a thank you for his work on the project at the Nov. 5 committee of the whole meeting. "Roy Brown has made a tremendous contribution to the history and heritage of North Grenville over many years, and it is with great pleasure that
after this fantastic project that he did on places of remembrance, that members of the heritage committee voted that he should receive a special heritage award for this year, 2018, which of course, marks the 100th anniversary of World War I." The project was formerly anticipated to be up and running by late November/early December, but thanks to the work of Cindy and Vince Murphy of Probase Web Solutions, it went live on the evening of Nov. 5. Over 23,000 pounds of food were collected, and more than $4,400 in cash was raised for The Hunger Stop - Lanark County Food Bank in Carleton Place Saturday, Nov. 10 during the kickoff of the Build a Mountain of Food campaign. The Hinton Auto Group Build a Mountain of Food started its six-Saturday road tour Nov. 10 on the right foot. This year's campaign is dedicated to Ed Chenard, a co-founder of the food drive who died in October this year. "Ed was such a positive community guy," said Hugh Colton, who has been steering this drive from the beginning. "It didn't matter if he was singing in the choir, or collecting food ... this year, this (food drive) is in honour of Ed." Colton said it's always an important first stop on the schedule when they visit Carleton Place and Almonte. Money donated and food collected is taken to the Hunger Stop, Lanark County Food Bank, which serves Mississippi Mills, Carleton Place, Beckwith and surrounding areas. The four participating grocery stores include Patrice's Your Independent Grocer, FreshCo, Giant Tiger and Mitchell's Your Independent Grocer. During the first stop on Saturday, 23,568 pounds of food were collected along with $4,489.81. "It's really important for the first stop to come to the plate, and they sure did," Colton said. "The grocery stores, and school campaigns were great. To Carleton Place and Almonte, way to go! Thank you very much for a great

SEASON OF THE RODENT THE CATS HAVE BEEN GIVEN THEIR ORDERS, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column
I had a dream about rats the other night. It's no wonder; rodents seem to be popping up all over the place these days. First, at the cottage. My husband bought us a lot on Bass Lake and he is building a cottage there. He uses an old trailer on the lot for shelter from the elements. He eats his lunch and waits out the rain on the screened porch. It's old and worn out, but it's quaint. I tried to convert that old trailer into a summer cabin earlier this year. The resident mice were against it. I did my best to make the place hospitable. I swept
and cleaned the cracked linoleum floor. I washed and disinfected inside all of the cupboards, closets and cabinets. I put fragrant fabric sheets inside all of the drawers to deter mice building nests within. I cleaned windows, stocked the kitchen with camping dishes, pots and pans and utensils, and I strung up my porch lights. We stayed one night. It was pleasant enough, and there is nothing like waking up on the lake to sip your coffee on the porch, listening to the birds. But one night was enough, because the mice were only mildly put out by my fervent sanitizing activities. They returned, full force and they brought their friends. "I don't know why you bother cleaning," my husband remarked as I once again emptied the cupboards and scoured the shelves. "The mice will just come back when we leave Sunday afternoon." I
looked at the mouse droppings in the towel closet and realized he was right. I have only made it back to the lake for short visits since then. The Farmer is there nearly every second day, working away on his cottage. He sweeps out the trailer and eats his lunch on the porch. I think the dog sneaks up onto the bed because no one is watching him. I shudder to think what is happening in the cupboards. "I opened the cupboard to get the tin of soup crackers, and the mouse was in there," my husband reported one day. "What did you do?" I asked. "I asked him to pass me the saltines," he laughed. I told him to make sure he builds that cottage in a way that is decidedly rodent-proof. Back at home on the farm, I can hear something in the sloped ceiling right above my pillow. I may not have bats in my belfry, but I do have squirrels in my attic. The Farmer emptied my closet, climbed up into the attic and set live traps
for the little creatures, who are obviously busy preparing for a long winter. I can see them running across the yard, with huge beechnuts in their mouths. We have dozens of nut trees on this farm, so they won't go hungry. But it would be really nice if they would store their nuts in hollow trees like they are supposed to not my house. The squirrels are able to take the food that my husband so generously leaves for them, without tripping the traps. And now there are mice under my kitchen sink. I came down to the kitchen at 2 a.m. and there were my cats, lined up in front of the sink, staring at the cupboard door. When I opened it, Sammy darted in and grabbed something. He
popped back out and ran past me toward the basement. A long grey tail was dangling from his mouth. I closed the cupboard door, and heard a 'snap.' The next morning I told my husband he had a mess to clean up under the kitchen sink. "Sammy caught one and you caught another," I reported. But when the Farmer opened the cupboard, he saw that the trap was empty. Either the rodents are getting smarter or the traps are getting worse. This evening, we were watching Netflix when I noticed a puddle forming outside the dishwasher. We turned the machine off and emptied the cabinet under the sink again. We found the source of the water - a mouse had nibbled his way through the hose that feeds
the water from the sink to the dishwasher. Tonight we won't put the cats to bed in the basement. They have been given strict instructions to eradicate the house of rodents. I'm not kidding: this means war. My daughter is storing her sports car in our barn for the winter, and I was worried about rodents getting inside the vehicle and nesting in her leather upholstery. I don't know what I was worried about. Clearly there are no more mice in the barn. They're all in my house. Diana Leeson Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. ARTISTS' GUILD HOPES FOR $10,000 WAR CHEST FOR NEW ARTISTS Appliance
DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com It's $1,000 down, $9,000 to go for the Merrickville Artist Guild's (MAG) growing fund that will support emerging artists. The guild will be collecting donations during the run of the Square Foot Show and Sale at the FM Silversmith Studio in Merrickville until Dec. 22. The show features 12" x 12" original artworks by more than 25 local creators. The fund was established about a year ago, according to MAG president Larry Thompson. "It's just raising funds at the moment," he said during the opening show at artist Fiona Macintyre's studio on Saturday, Nov. 10. "We are to get together as a group to determine how it will work, (with) grants or bursaries," which could be put toward anything from first shows to helping rent studio space or even gather art supplies. "We want to get a substantial fund together," said Thompson. "I would say bursaries for furthering education would be good for any artist starting out," suggestSee more, page 18

ed Macintyre. "If we could get it to $10,000, that would be sustainable in perpetuity," said MAG secretary Leslie Strutt. Thompson said that the idea has been "brewing" for several years, noting that the MAG's membership is not limited to artists, but also to art lovers and patrons. He said the new artists' fund could also be used not just for the visual arts, but for writers and photographers as well. "It's robust," said Thompson of the membership, with "a lot of enthusiasm ... We've got some new blood coming into the guild, which is exciting." Thompson said that he wanted to return the show, every year if possible, to Macintyre's bright, airy, inviting studio space, where she also holds classes.

UPSTATE NY COMMUNITIES A STUDY IN CONTRASTS CANADIAN SHOPPERS ARE LESS FREQUENT TO THE U.S., WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE JEFF MAGUIRE Column
Lately I have been writing about our fall travels in Germany. This week I'll shift gears and outline some observations from a driving trip in the northeastern United States which Kathleen and I just completed. The main focus of our visit was the picturesque Olympic Village of Lake Placid, one of our favourite annual destinations. We never tire of a community which undoubtedly has one of the finest natural
settings in the world. Nestled between expansive Lake Placid itself and the aptly named Mirror Lake, the village hosted both the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games. Today its firstrate winter sports facilities are used as training sites by American Olympians. Meanwhile the arena complex in the downtown Olympic Center hosts mainly Can-Am minor hockey tournaments. You can't visit Lake Placid without meeting aspiring hockey players and their parents who provide an unparalleled, year-round financial injection for the community. Surrounded by the high peaks of the Adirondacks,
including Whiteface Mountain the site of Olympic skiing events, Lake Placid's spectacular physical setting makes it a magnet for visitors. Summer is busy but with the lure of Whiteface, skiing enthusiasts mean Lake Placid is even busier during the winter. The popularity of the community also drives real estate prices. Properties on both Mirror Lake and Lake Placid have sold for millions of dollars apiece for many years and these days their value remains high. On our way to Lake Placid we followed a route which took us through communities including Canton and Potsdam. Both are university towns and they are clearly thriving with busy main streets and
lots of activities. Sadly the same can't be said of other places in upstate New York, especially those closest to the St. Lawrence River. The region is a study in contrasts. Relatively rich places like Lake Placid, Potsdam and Canton are clearly boosted by their locations and/or the facilities they boast. But towns such as Massena and Malone obviously aren't doing as well. Ogdensburg too has faced challenges over the year. But that city's location at the foot of the Johnstown Bridge, just across the St. Lawrence River from Canada, is clearly a major asset. We are saddened to see what is happening in some U.S. communities on or near the St. Lawrence who
are heavily dependent on Canadians who once swarmed across the various bridges to purchase cheaper American fuel, food and products of all kinds. The once thriving St. Lawrence Center in Massena has failed badly. More than half the expansive mall is empty. On a Saturday afternoon visit we found many still existing stores closed. We counted just two Canadian licence plates in the parking lot. To make matters worse, as we drove past the next large commercial development in Massena we saw that the largest supermarket in the community is now closed and boarded up. This time last year it was operating. We saw a similar trend earlier in the day when we
passed through Malone, 45 minutes to the east. Retail outlets we've visited many times are now closed. A large department store was holding a "closing out" sale as we drove through. The low standing of the Canadian dollar is a huge contributing factor as is the sagging state of Canada-U. S. relations, related mainly to the current president and his administration. Many Canadians are boycotting the U.S. and although I understand why I think it is particularly sad. Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. SCHOOL INSPECTOR HAD MISS CROSBY ON EDGE OF HER SEAT COLUMNIST MARY COOK RECALLS HOW THIS INTIMIDATING VISIT WAS A SUCCESS MARY COOK Column
Like thunder, we could hear heavy footsteps on the wood platform outside the door of the Northcote School. We heard boots being pounded against the door frame, shaking off the freshly fallen snow, and without a rap, the door swung wide and in walked a total stranger dressed like a member of Parliament. He nodded at Miss Crosby who had stood up so quickly, her chair tumbled to the floor behind her, and I could see a look of panic come over her face as she
shifted papers on an already spic-and-span desk. Here was the newly appointed inspector, a figure to be reckoned with for sure! We didn't have to be told to stand; that was automatic whenever anyone came through the door of the school. We could tell from the look on Miss Crosby's face this gentleman had tremendous power in his hands. He was there to see that the Northcote School was run properly, and according to the standards set out by the board, the pupils were being taught in the basics and beyond, and we were respectful and obedient. I said a silent prayer that my brother Emerson and Cecil would be on their best behaviour. He pounded up to Miss Crosby's desk, nodded at us standing like stone pillars, and in a voice that could be heard in Arnprior, Ont., ordered us to take our seats. As we always did when seated in front of a visitor, our hands were clasped in front
of us on our desks, and our feet planted firmly on the floor. Miss Crosby's eyes darted over us to make sure we were all doing what was expected of us. Then, the new inspector came down from the front of the classroom and went right to Joyce's desk and asked her to open her drawer. I could see Miss Crosby breathe a sigh of relief that Joyce had been picked, because she was just about the neatest person in the whole Northcote School. He asked her to take out a couple of her scribblers which he flipped through and handed them back to her. Then, he walked over to the window where the Senior Fourths sat and stopped in front of Iva's desk and asked her the same thing as he had asked Joyce. Again, he flipped through the scribblers and handed them back to her. All this time, Miss Crosby was standing rigid in front of her desk. The man
walked over to her and asked to see the book which recorded our attendance very day. He spent many minutes leafing through it. We of course were scarcely breathing, and my need to go to the privy was now causing me great concern. I looked over at Cecil. I prayed he wouldn't do anything foolish. But he was moving his ears up and down, a feat he was able to do with ease and which drove Miss Crosby to distraction. He was a sly one all right and was smart enough to wiggle his ears when the inspector or Miss Crosby weren't looking. Finally, it seemed the Inspector was finished. He
nodded to Miss Crosby, and headed for the door, leaving behind melted snow wherever he had walked. If that had been one of us, Miss Crosby would have had us clean up the mess immediately. She righted her chair, fell into it, and said we could all go out to recess even though we had scarcely done a whit of school work. She looked like she had done a hard day's work. We had often heard how the inspector was to be feared by the teacher. For the life of me, I couldn't think of one thing he could find wrong with Miss Crosby. I loved her dearly. But her destiny was in
his hands and it was said a word from him, and a teacher could lose her job. Her yearly salary of a few hundred dollars would be gone forever! Was it any wonder he was held in such awe? HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
