MEET YOUR CANDIDATES FOR THE LEEDS-GRENVILLE-THOUSAND ISLANDS AND RIDEAU LAKES BYELECTION A byelection will be held Monday, Dec. 3 for the vacant member of Parliament Leeds-GrenvilleThousand Islands and Rideau Lakes seat, formerly held by the late Gord Brown. Get to know your four candidates in profiles below.
Michael Barrett Conservative party I'm Michael Barrett and I live in Leeds-GrenvilleThousand Islands and Rideau Lakes with my wife Amanda and our four children. Following my service in the Canadian Armed Forces, Amanda and I chose to make our home and raise our children in the place where our family has deep agricultural and community roots, and a heritage we treasure. Community life and public service have always been important to me. In 2014 I was elected councillor for the village of Spencerville and surrounding agricultural area in the municipality of Edwardsburgh Cardinal. Along with representing my ward and bringing forward the concerns of my neighbours and constituents, I served as chair of the public works, environmental service and facilities committee of the whole. For the past five years, I have been involved with the Conservative Electoral District Association, serving most recently as president. This afforded me the opportunity to work closely with my friend and mentor, the late MP Gord Brown, co-ordinating meetings with farmers, small business owners, hunters, anglers, landowners, seniors and youth. I have been fortunate to meet so many people across our beautiful riding and have become familiar with their interests, concerns and aspirations for their communities. Once elected, I will hold issues-based meetings open to the public throughout the

riding. I will maintain a constituency office in Brockville, and satellite constituency offices in Kemptville, Gananoque and Westport. I will work with our 13 municipal councils to advance the needs of our communities in Ottawa. I serve on municipal council because I care about our community. I served alongside the finest men and women in our Canadian Forces because I love our country. I served as the Conservative association president, because I am a principled Conservative. I stand for balanced budgets, for local infrastructure investments, for secure borders, for a strong Canadian identity and free trade. I support investment in clean energy technologies, but not a carbon tax. I support law abiding gun owners, and believe in stiff penalties for gang members. With extensive experience and the energy to serve the people of our great riding, I would be honoured to receive your support on Dec. 3.
cate, lawyer, mother, grandmother, and former Brockville city councillor, Mary Jean has shown her deep passion and determination to make a real difference for families in our region. Born and raised here, Mary Jean has deep roots in our region's agriculture sector, serving as a Director of Egg Farmers of Ontario and working as General Counsel to Burnbrae Farms. Most recently, she served as the Chief of Staff to Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. She has a unique understanding of our evolving local economy, and she will be a hardworking member of Parliament for all of us in Leeds - Grenville - Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. "For me, it's all about service, it's all about service to my community," she said in a promotional video. " ... If you want to have things in your community, you have to contribute to your community. The rules are made by those who show up. If you have a seat at the table, you get to stick your hand up to vote, and help make things happen." our vets unspent. The men and women who have served our country deserve the very best service from our government. That's not what they've received from both the red and blue camps, and I'm determined to advocate loudly for that to change. Our vets and their families should get timely access to the benefits they've earned - anything less shows a lack of respect for their sacrifice. In this election and those in the future, I ask you to really consider what's being offered by each party. Platforms, leaders and priorities change. Don't just vote for a colour by habit; make your candidate earn your support! Think of your values and your hopes for the future. I hope to represent those for you in the House of Commons on Dec. 3.

needed most. We have a large agricultural segment in our riding. For their sake and that of us all, we need to buckle down and take climate change seriously as a country. Environmental responsibility is seriously lacking from both the Conservatives and the Liberals when we should be putting deliberate focus on reducing our damage to the planet. From failed crops to increased natural disasters, the cost of continuing to kick the can down the road is too great to ignore. We need to invest in clean energy now and institute initiatives that keep the onus for pollution prevention on the worst offenders. Under Harper, application processing wait times rose significantly for our veterans. They gutted that department, closing local access offices and laying off staff. Trudeau campaigned specifically on fixing the problem in the 2015 general election. Instead, he has done little to help over the past three years, even leaving money earmarked for

COMMUNITY
WATERFRONT TRAIL TO BE DEDICATED TO LATE TERRY BUTLER PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com To honour his involvement as a community leader and former councillor, North Grenville council will dedicate the Waterfront Trail in memory of the late Terry Butler. The motion to dedicate the trail was officially passed by council at its Nov. 26 meeting. In early November, council received correspondence from Roy Brown requesting that the Waterfront Trail be dedicated in Butler's memory. According to director of corporate services/clerk, Cahl Pominville, the project has been in the works for a number of years. In a Nov. 3, 2018 letter to the municipality, Brown said Butler "was a person with a unique personality." "I can best describe him as a very patient, personable, committed and caring individual; a man who
could bring people together to further whatever the cause or task at hand," he continued. " ... During the many years I knew him, I was always impressed with the ideas that Terry would come up with to better this community, which eventually became part of his legacy in North Grenville." In 2001, Butler brought the idea forward that he called the Kemptville Creek Boardwalk, to make the downtown core with the Ferguson Forest Centre trails via walking trail along the north side of the waterway. After the project was deferred for a little while, Butler recognized another opportunity to follow-up with the concept when he chaired the 2006-2007 Rideau 175 Anniversary Committee, held in conjunction with the Kemptville 150th Anniversary Committee. He revisited the Kemptville Creek Boardwalk pro-
ject and included it as one of the legacy projects under the Rideau 175 banner. At this time, he also devised a new plan to realign the proposed trail to follow along Clothier Street East for a short distance to link the downtown core to the shoreline at Curry Park. Butler had also hoped to secure an accessible extension of the trail from Curry Park to the south side of the County Road 43 Bridge. Rather than cutting off the trail near the bridge, he pursued the idea of having a raised walkway constructed under the County Road 43 Bridge, which was intended to connect the trail to the Ferguson Forest Centre's Turtle Trail. In January of 2008, the term of the Rideau 175 Anniversary Committee had expired, and unfortunately, a few of the legacy projects hadn't been completed. "As a result, Terry faithfully carried on by estab-

lishing and chairing the special projects committee of council in order to meet the goals he set for the Rideau 175 Anniversary Committee," said Pominville. Butler and his committee finally brought the project to fruition during the years that followed and the latest Waterfront Trail extension was completed in 2017. It's a two-kilometre pathway along the Kemptville Creek's north shore, that connects Old Town Kemptville with Clothier Street East. "Terry passed away on May 30, 2017, but his vision of the Waterfront Trail lives on," said Pominville. Signage, at a proposed cost of $600, and a dedication to Butler is proposed, but the official name of the trail will remain as Waterfront Trail. Coun. Barb Tobin noted that it was an honour to read the resolution for Waterfront Trail to be dedicated in Butler's memory.
Ashley Kulp/Metroland North Grenville council passed a motion Nov. 26 to dedicate the Waterfront Trail after late community leader and councillor, Terry Butler. Pictured, Butler takes the oath of office as he is sworn-in on North Grenville council in 2010. Butler passed away May 30, 2017.

NEW PHARMACY OPENS IN HEALTH, WELLNESS CENTRE PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A health and wellness hub in Kemptville has added a pharmacy to their building in order to better serve their patients and provide more convenience in care. The waiting room at the Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre now features the Somerville Family Pharmacy; a fully equipped pharmacy with a consultation room and a variety of services. The pharmacy was opened in early November, adding to the array of services found at the Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre, which now features Back on Track Physiotherapy. "It's a cool model," said pharmacy owner, Nadeen Halim. "I think Kemptville needed something like this, just for convenience. Everything is offered under the same roof."
Halim said patients come to the health and wellness centre from as far as Brockville and Prescott, because there is such a great need for doctors locally. "There are long waits everywhere, sometimes up to a year," she said. Pharmacist George Mosa takes pride in the easy prescription transfer process for members of the public - patients at the centre or not - who would like to have their prescriptions filled at the new pharmacy. He is able to provide services in French and Arabic, as well as English. "Most people think transferring prescriptions is hard, but it's actually very simple," said Mosa. "All we need is their name, date of birth, and the name of the pharmacy they are currently using." The new facility also offers free local prescription delivery within North Grenville neighbourhoods and accepts all drug plans.
"It's better for the patients of the centre, because they can have their prescriptions filled right away after they see the doctor, and then go home," Mosa explained. The pharmacy is equipped with a private consultation area, and offers a range of insurance plans. "We just want to make everything easy for the patients and as convenient as possible," Mosa said. Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre opened in March of 2017. The clinic has four physicians, with a fifth joining in January, and is still accepting new patients. Somerville Family Pharmacy's hours are the same as the clinic's hours, which are as follows: Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 613-258-2800 or email somervillefamilypharmacy@gmail.com.

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stands next to local Liberal MP candidate for Leeds - Grenville Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, Mary Jean McFall during their visit to Geronimo coffee house in Kemptville on Nov. 27.
SUPPORTING LIBERAL MP CANDIDATE MARY JEAN MCFALL Continued from page 1
The Prime Minister made his way around the room taking pictures and shaking hands with residents before he and McFall stood up on chairs to address the room. Trudeau's opening statements addressed a problem he's noticed across the country, with people choosing to focus on the negative rather than the positive, and the differences of opinion rather than the similarities. "People are spending a lot of time putting the emphasis on how we're different from each other, how we can point fingers at different groups," he said. Known as a traditionally Conservative riding, Leeds - Grenville - Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes hasn't had a Liberal MP since Joe Jordan served from 1997-2004, after
his father, Jim Jordan (1988-1997). "What I think politics should really be about, and what I've seen across the country particularly when I come to great, strong communities like this, is that people would much rather be together and highlighting where we are similar where we lean on each other, where we can work together, where we can build a better future together," Trudeau stated. Trudeau explained that in order to achieve this locally, there needs to be someone elected who 'gets' the community, and who reflects the kind of priorities and challenges that all residents are facing. "As we know, the only way to move forward is in a thoughtful and responsible way, and that's what we're going to do all together," he exclaimed. He thanked the crowd
for coming out to show their support and local volunteers for their hard work. "We've had great conversations with your neighbours and with the community, highlighting the fact that this is an opportunity to send a strong, local voice to Ottawa, to be a part of weighing in on the important challenges we're facing as a country, and most importantly, building those solutions together." Trudeau noted that the community activism in the Leeds - Grenville - Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes riding has been amazing, and that he is proud. Before his departure, Trudeau made his way through the crowd to greet guests and walked behind the counter to meet and take a photo with owners of Geronimo, Terry and Lee McIlvenna, as well as Malina Dockendorff of Rideau Roastery.

OPINION EDITORIAL
LIGHT IT UP SAFELY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON During the holiday season, it's important to enjoy time spent with family and friends. It is also the time of year where most Canadians are using a lot of electricity with additional Christmas lights on, the furnace running, spacer heaters on, the stove cooking dinner, plugging in your vehicles so they start and all the new gadgets getting plugged in. The Canadian Safety Council offers some safety tips for this winter and holiday season. Whether it's because you were shovelling the snow or pulling too hard on the extension cord, sometimes the cord gets damaged. If your extension cord is damaged at the plug or the sheathing, do not use the cord. The damage may cause you to get an electric shock. Repairing the cord with electrical tape is not recommended and will not ensure that it is safe to use the cord in the long run. Using timers for your outdoor holiday lights is not only a great way to ensure that they are on before you're home, but is also a great way to be environmentally conscious. A timer will also shut off the lights before you go to bed, saving you money on your power bill. You won't even have to leave the comfort of your own home to plug or unplug the lights. Turning off the lights before going to bed prevents the light bulbs from overheating in the night, and setting them on a timer ensures that it's not a task that might slip your mind. Whether it's at home or in the office, outlets can only handle one portable space heater. As soon as you plug in that second one, you'll trip the breaker. Most home outlets are rated for only a single 12-amp or 1,500-watt load. Check your space heater and any other electrical device that you're plugging to ensure it doesn't exceed this rating. Most modern houses have GFCI outlets on the exterior of your home to plug in holiday lights and other electrical equipment. The benefit of a GFCI outlet is electric shock protection for you when using portable cord- and-plug connected electrical equipment in an indoor or outdoor environment. While we're on the topic of GFCI outlets, think of hitting that test and reset button before you plug in your device. You want the GFCI to work to protect you from being electrocuted should there ever be an electrical fault. Consider doing this in the bathrooms in your house and on outside outlets at least once a month or ask your family or guests to test the GFCI before they use the outlet. It's better to ensure the protection is working long before you need it. Enjoy these tips which can help you have a safe and happy holiday season.

WHO WE ARE
HOLIDAY CHICKENS: NOW I HAVE SEEN EVERYTHING WHEN WHAT TO HER WONDERING EYES DID APPEAR, BUT A LIT CHICKEN. KILL ME NOW, WRITES LAURIE WEIR. LAURIE WEIR Column
It was a hot day in May, 2014, when I was cleaning out my grandma's house to make it my own. There was some tidying up around the yard I was also doing, including taking an old and broken, paint-chipped cement chicken to the curb for garbage pickup. I was busting windows not on purpose - when I happened to meet the cute neighbour from Newfoundland as I was heading to the shed with the broken glass. He invited me for dinner.
As I headed to his place that weekend, I was shocked to see Grandma's broken down cement chicken, sitting in his garden of green peppers and tomatoes. We had a good laugh about it, and I didn't think any more of it, until my cute Newfoundland neighbour became my Sweet Baby and moved in with me that fall. Along with him and all his possessions, came the danged broken-down, cement chicken, and it went right back into its original spot on the garden patio ... much to my chagrin. It wasn't long after when Sweet Baby found a couple little chicks at a yard sale. Last summer, he cut down a dead pine tree about three feet from the ground. It was the perfect spot for a flat piece of wood. It became a new home for the chickens. He painted them white, and spraypainted a splash of gold on their beaks and heads. "What in the name of all
that's holy are you doing with those danged chickens?" "You just never mind, I like chickens," he said. "I'm working on a farm, and I might move those solar lights that are over by the lilac bush and make it a shrine." After a recent trip to Mom's one Sunday, it was dark when I got home, but I saw some Christmas lights from a distance. Sweet Baby had gotten on the roof of the house to throw some lights on the spruce tree. Then I had to laugh outrageously! The multicoloured spotlights were shining, reflecting through the trees, and highlighting that danged chicken. Laurie Weir is the news editor for the Perth Courier and Smiths Falls Record News. She can be reached at ljweir@metroland.com when she's not trying to hide the chickens.

On Friday, Nov. 23, at around noon, the Grenville County OPP was advised of a single motor vehicle collision on County Road 15, in Wolford Township. The vehicle involved in the collision had been reported stolen from Ottawa earlier that same day. Prior to police arrival, a Good Samaritan stopped to assist the driver involved in the collision. The driver threatened the citizen with an edged weapon and demanded that the citizen transport him in his truck. The citizen complied, and drove the man toward Kemptville. Police say that shortly after, the man released the uninjured citizen on the side of the road and drove away with the citizen's vehicle. Police attempted to stop the driver of this second stolen vehicle, but had to discontinue the pursuit due to the dangerous driving displayed by the suspect vehicle. At approximately 12:50 p.m., the man attended a gas station in the village of Spencerville. At this location he threatened staff with an edged weapon and stole alcohol and cigarettes. The situation came to an end at Rooney Road and Edwardsburgh/Cardinal Township,
impaired driving; uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm; forcible confinement; theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000; two counts of armed robbery; three counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; mischief under $5,000; failure to comply with a probation order; and breach of recognizance. None of these charges have been proven in court. The accused was held for bail and will appear before the Brockville Ontario court of justice.

DANUBE MEANDERS THROUGH 10 EUROPEAN NATIONS JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT A VISIT TO THE PICTURESQUE OLD TOWN OF ULM JEFF MAGUIRE Column
There is something about the Danube River that makes it a favourite sightseeing stop for people touring Europe. Given the early onset of winter here I must admit that thinking about an afternoon stroll along the "Blue Danube" is particularly uplifting! The river isn't hard to find. The Danube flows for 2,850 kilometres (1,770 miles) and meanders through 10 countries, more than any other river in the world. The source of
the Danube River is located in the small German city of Donaueschingen, just north of the border with Switzerland. Kathleen and I have visited Donaueschingen during our time in Germany. It is a picturesque place set in a valley among the low mountains of the southern Black Forest. In the company of our good friends and longtime travel companions Frank and Wendy LeBlanc, we drove to Donaueschingen on a Saturday. The town's market is a bustling place which we thoroughly enjoyed touring. The main reason for our visit was to see the source of the Danube. Unfortunately the actual viewing site, located on the grounds of the local palace, was undergoing renovations and was offlimits to visitors at the time. However it is a major tourist attraction and signage directed us to the
local museum where a "temporary source" had been set up. This has become an "injoke" with the four of us. We laugh every time we think about it. Because the "source of the Danube" was actually just a raised display case in the middle of the floor with a viewing port at the centre. Visitors could look through the port and into a rather deep passage resplendent with flashing lights. At the bottom was a blue "water flow" which, temporarily at least, purported to be the river source. With apologies to the good people of Donaueschingen, it was pretty hokey actually! Our visit was in the fall of 2013. Frank and Wendy have been back more recently and they say the newly rebuilt official source of the Danube ("Donau" in German) is looking pretty spiffy these days. While planning our re-
cent fall vacation in Germany, France and Switzerland Wendy asked if we would be interested in spending a day and a night in the city of Ulm which is located on the Danube. The city of 125,000 is just over an hour northwest of Munich where we began our excursion in late September. We enthusiastically agreed! Ulm is in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The rivers Blau and Iller are tributaries of the larger Danube which also flow through the city. Most of Ulm, including the picturesque old town, hugs the left bank of the
Danube. On the other side of the Danube is the twin city of Neu-Ulm (population 50,000) which is in the state of Bavaria. The medieval city wall has been rebuilt and runs along the Danube, offering beautiful views along the river and across it to Bavaria. Behind the city wall, in the old town, are some wonderfully rebuilt half-timbered buildings which are a hallmark of Germany. Sadly an Allied bombing raid in December 1944 resulted in the destruction of 80 per cent of the medieval city centre. Some buildings were painstakingly restored al-
though much of the area was rebuilt in 1950s and 1960s style. If you are looking to stroll along the Danube there is no better place to do it than in picturesque Ulm. For more about our visit to the city please read the online version of this column at www.insideottawavalley.com. Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. KEMPTVILLE IN NEED OF MORE BLOOD DONORS Canadian Blood Services is reporting its December blood donor clinic is short on donors. More donors are encouraged to book an appointment to give blood on Monday, Dec. 3.
Collecting blood during the colder winter months can be challenging because the weather can increasingly keep people indoors and many donors are away for the season. But for lo-
cal patients, like eight-year-old Abigail Hosick who has Precursor B Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, the need doesn't take a holiday. Abigail received her first
blood transfusion on March 25, 2017, and will continue to need treatments for the next year. The clinic will take place Dec. 3 between the hours of 1:30 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the W.B.
George Centre (48 Shearer Street), within the Kemptville Campus Community and Education Hub. To discover all the ways you can Give Life and to book an appointment, download the GiveBlood app or visit blood.ca. Submitted by Canadian Blood Services

IF I SHOULD DIE BEFORE I WAKE ORGAN DONATION A SUBJECT THAT CAN'T BE IGNORED, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column
Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. And as for the rest of me, you can take that too. I won't need it where I'm going. Most people don't talk about death with their loved ones. It's just not a topic that comes up in conversation, unless you are taking on some risky venture like swimming with the sharks. But perhaps we should have a chat with the people closest to us, because you never know what tomorrow will bring. We need to have a talk about organ donation, with the ones we love. Basically, we have to make our wishes known, just in case. Do you want to have your viable organs harvested and passed on to someone who can use them when you die and don't need them anymore? If so, you need to do more than just sign an organ donor card. I read that more than 450 people declined to have their loved ones' organs donated in 2018 because they were uncertain of their wishes (and that person was either deceased, on life support or otherwise incapacitated and unable to clarify). So not only
did those people pass on, but they were not given the opportunity to save a person - or several people through the gift of organ and tissue donation. Your view of the hereafter may be very different from mine. Not everyone has a belief system that allows the concept of organ donation. But if you aren't certain you are against it, I would encourage you to consider being for it, and to make your wishes known by doing a few things. Sign the card that comes with your driver's licence. Put it in your wallet in case, heaven forbid, you are in a horrific crash and your organs need to be harvested without delay. Many a tragedy has turned into a miracle for a family in need, because the victim of a collision had signed a donor card. Next, go to the government website, Be a Donor, and check to see if you are a registered organ donor. All you have to do is enter your health card number and birth date and you will see if you need to update your information. These are great ways to let people know your intentions - that you wish to have your organs harvested and donated upon your passing. Unfortunately, this may not be enough. We are learning that hundreds of people pass away every year and their wishes are not honoured, because they didn't make them clearly known to the family they left behind. When asked by medical staff about consent for organ donation, many people are saying no, even if a
card has been signed by the deceased person. To avoid this situation, I would urge you to make a point of writing a note in your own hand, stating your wishes to have your organs and tissues donated upon your death. Put that note somewhere safe, with your will or important papers, and make sure you tell someone that it's there. They need to be aware of it before you die. Now, I have to apologize for writing about such a difficult subject in what is typically a lighthearted column. I just was surprised to learn that signing the donor card - even registering with the province may not be enough to ensure your wishes are upheld. If your family has any doubt that you want your organs donated, they can decline on your behalf. Don't leave any doubt in their minds. Make sure they know the answers to the difficult questions. Do you want to be an organ donor when you die? And beyond that - do you want to be buried or cremated? Do you want your ashes scattered somewhere in particular? Write it down, and tell those closest to you what you have written. None of us know the hour or the day when our lives will come to an end. We also can't know for sure what happens after we die. My father, who was a science teacher, often said "there are some things we just aren't meant to know." But on his deathbed, when asked if he wanted his organs donated, he said, "I don't know if you will find anything worth saving, but you are welcome to it." In memory of the donors.

Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, Misfortune seem’d his lot He got into a drifted bank, And we, we got up-sot. (Repeat Chorus) Now the ground is white, Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight, And sing the sleighing song. Just get a bob-tailed nag, Two forty for his speed, Then hitch him to an open sleigh, And crack! you’ll take the lead. (Repeat Chorus)

OPINION
REASON FOR MOTHER'S TEARS REMAINED A MYSTERY WORDS OF JOY AND SADNESS FILLED HER DIARIES, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
The two coal oil lamps sat on the table, one at either end, giving off a small circle of light, that barely lit that corner of the kitchen. Over the table, hanging from the ceiling, was the Coleman lamp that was only lit when we had company. The little fragile wicks were too expensive to waste on family evenings only. I could sense that all was not well. Mother was hunched over her diary, and I could see the pencil moving quickly, as if she had to get something down
in a hurry. Everyone but Father was sitting around the big pine table, busy with our own amusements, as we did every night after everything had been redded up. Audrey and I were thumbing through the Eaton's catalogue, but I wasn't paying attention. My eyes were on Mother. Often she would write, pause a bit, and look up at the ceiling as if searching for the next word to write in her diary. But that night, there was no pausing. She was writing quickly, and once a page was filled, she flipped it over, and started anew. She wasn't really writing in a diary. It wasn't like the one Santa had brought me for Christmas ... a little red satin cover book with a gold clasp and its very own key. No, Mother's diaries were scribblers bought at the one-cent sale at the drugstore. The covers looked like black oilcloth,
and as soon as one was filled, it was put into the kitchen cupboard, not to be touched by anyone but Mother. I had no idea what she wrote, but scarcely a night went by that she wasn't bent over her diaries at the kitchen table. That night, she seemed a million miles away. Often, she would write a few words, and then chuckle to herself. This night was different. Then I saw a tear roll down her cheek. She brushed it away quickly and kept at her frantic writing. What could she be putting down on paper? If it was upsetting, why did she write it in the first place? My sister noticed it, too, but said nothing. I shifted on the bench, and Audrey seemed to know that I was about to ask Mother if there was something wrong. Audrey put her hand on my arm, and I knew she was telling
me to say nothing. The frantic writing went on. My brothers were too busy at their own projects to take notice, and Father, sitting by the stove with the Ottawa Farm Journal, had fallen asleep. It was just my sister and I who could see the gentle tears on Mother's face. Audrey made a big production of turning the pages of the catalogue and in a voice that was more shrill than usual, began pointing out things we could buy if money was no object. I tried to be interested, but it was so unusual for Mother to ever shed a tear, that my heart was heavy, and it was all I could do to sit quietly and say nothing. Then the old CPR clock over the icebox struck, and it was time for bed. My three brothers raced for the stairs, Father roused from his chair at the stove, and Audrey closed the catalogue and nudged me
away from the table. Mother closed her diary and put her opened hands on its cover and just sat there looking around the kitchen, almost as if she was seeing it for the first time. When I went to bed, I couldn't put out of my mind what I had seen at the kitchen table. What had Mother written that had caused her to shed a tear? Audrey wouldn't talk about it and told me not to worry about it. Mother would be fine, she said. The next morning, when I came down for breakfast, there was Mother making porridge at the Findlay Oval. She was whistling, as she often did while working around the kitchen. What had caused her sadness the night before? Whatever it was, she had tucked it away and taken on another day on the farm which had become her home after many years of
living in a big city. Little did I know that it would be decades before I would know what Mother would write in her diaries ... words of joy, words of gratitude, but often words of sadness would fill the pages. her sister called Two Sisters Attic Treasures. For various projects, they'd paint furniture and experiment with creating their own chalk-style paints. "I didn't want to have to make it in mass batches, so I ended up doing some research and I found Country Chic paint, which is Canadian," said Saunders. It was important to her that the paint be a Canadian brand. Country Chic paints are certified to have no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and there is a full line of colours available at Welcome Home Interiors. Aside from the paints, Saunders also carries Country Chic's antiquing waxes. "Distressing and antiquing waxes give old pieces of furniture another dimension; new life," said Saunders. She carries clear, dark, light, and pearl waxes. Saunders says Country Chic paint products can appeal to anyone, whether your style is more modern with sleek, solid colours, or rustic with distressed textures. She has names for all of her pieces of furniture. "That one's Lime Rickey Bliss," she pointed. "She's an antique dressing table." Saunders

Pictured, from left: Diana's husband Mike Saunders, Diana, owner of New Energy Kreations Ken Schliemann, and Susie McIntosh of Total Move Management, who helped get the new businesses in their new location. had painted, antiqued, and distressed the vintage table, which now proudly holds up a portrait of Marilyn Monroe in a corner of the new shop. Other items Saunders has named include a small, solid red end table with a dark glaze named Little Red. "She can't be big red because Big Red's coming in a few weeks. She's gorgeous." Big Red is a large antique buffet with rounded drawers. On Saturday, Dec. 1, Saunders will be hosting a Furniture Painting 101 workshop from 1 - 4 p.m., which will see participants bring in a small piece of furniture such as a side table or chair to paint, distress, or glaze. Why not commit to buying at least some of your gifts this year in the Kemptville and Merrickville area? Shopping locally supports your family and friends
who rely on the jobs that local businesses provide as well as the choice and ready availability of many amenities and services which keep our community vibrant. Use it or lose it! Find out more by following Sustainable North Grenville on Facebook and see photos of some of the items to be auctioned: www.facebook.com/sustainablenorthgrenville. This festive, lamp lit evening will also feature some uplifting tunes from Bruce Enloe as well as some light refreshments, all in the beautiful heritage Maplewood Hall in the charming hamlet of Oxford Mills. DEATH NOTICE
(Nana, Mum), died peacefully in Victoria General Hospital November 7th, 2018 at the age of 93. Joan was admitted the day before, after a fall in her beloved home at Jeskin Aerie Assisted Living. Left with a fractured pelvis the doctor felt would heal in time, her death was unexpected and likely from cardiac arrest. Surrounded by family just hours before she passed on, Joan shared many stories from days gone by in her typical cheerful manner. Joan often expressed gratitude for living a long and happy life with few regrets. In those last few hours she focused on family and reminded us to “never forget to cross your t’s and dot your i’s.” She had no unfinished business. Born October 14th, 1925 in Duncan BC, Joan grew up mostly in Victoria. One night in 1947, at the Roller Bowl in Victoria, she met a young sailor from Royal Roads. Three months later, at age 22, she married Stanley Mitchell and soon afterwards Joan and her sailor moved to Halifax NS, to begin raising a family. Joan was the quintessential Navy Wife: ready, steady, resourceful, loving and strong willed. She had to be: raising 3 boys and a girl, much of the time alone while Stanley was at sea. The family lived in Halifax, Ottawa, Victoria and Burlington. In retirement Stan and Joan lived at their Otty Lake cottage, Mission Texas, Saudi Arabia and Victoria. The two of them were warmly social and made many friends everywhere they went. Joan/Mum/Nana was predeceased by Stanley in 2005 and youngest son Bryan in 2011. She is survived by children: Rodney (Heidi), Bruce, Robyn (Gary), grandchildren: Victoria (Steven), Heather (David), Kathleen (Shayne), William (Allyce), great Grandchildren James and Chloe, sisters-in-law Evelyn and Audrey and nieces: Leslie, Joy, Debbie, Tracey, Nancy, Erica and Ingrid. The family offers heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Jesken Aerie for the warm friendship and nurturing care that enriched Joan’s last years. Also to the staff at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital for the compassion and professionalism they have shown to our Mum and Nana both of late and over the years. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held in Victoria at a later date and next summer at Otty Lake. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Jesken Aerie of M’akola Housing Society in Victoria BC, or The Great War Memorial of Perth District Hospital Foundation in Perth, Ontario.
