Students at Oxford-on-Rideau Public School will get to spend two years longer in the school than originally anticipated. In a Jan. 16 letter sent to parents of students and obtained by the Advance, Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) superintendent of schools, David Coombs, announced the Oxford Mills school will remain in operation until June 2021. It was originally set to be closed this June. The UCDSB's regional office, run in the facility, will also stay open until the school's closure. MERRICKVILLE FIRE CHIEF TENDERS RESIGNATION MARK URQUHART WILL LEAVE THE ROLE JAN. 25 ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com After nearly two years as Merrickville Fire Department's chief, Mark Urquhart has tendered his resignation to pursue other opportunities. The Village of Merrickville-Wolford issued a press release on Jan. 15, noting Urquhart's resignation will be effective Jan. 25.
Mark Urquhart "The village anticipates posting for a part-time fire chief in the near future," the release stated, noting the township wishes Urquhart the best in future
endeavours. "During the interim, deputy fire chief, Brad Cole, will be acting in the fire chief position." Urquhart has given eight years of services to the Merrickville Fire Department, including almost two years in the chief's role. "It has been a sincere honour and privilege to represent and serve the Village of Merrickville-Wolford and the dedicated firefighters of the Merrickville Fire Department," Urquhart said. "There is no greater service to one's community than that of a volunteer firefighter."

its closure for two more school years," he stated in the letter. "Parents wishing to enroll their children at Oxford may still do so using our board's usual registration procedures." Oxford-on-Rideau was one of eight schools put on the chopping block by UCDSB trustees in a March 23, 2017 decision as part of a pupil accommodation review process, which included Wolford Public School, which was shuttered in September 2018. Subject to space being available for students at Kemptville's South Branch Elementary School, the school was to be closed in September 2018 as well, but was pushed off until 2019. According to Coombs, a $6.6 million addition to North Grenville District High School (NGDHS) on Concession Road, next to South Branch, is the reason for the delay. It was announced early last year. " ... While there is still

To that end, the school's closure will take place in June 2021 coinciding with the opening of the NGDHS addition, expected to be
completed for the new school year in Sept. 2021. At the time of the 2017 decision, UCDSB trustee Lisa Swan indicated that the high school, which opened in 2012 is already over capacity "with 844 students and is using two classrooms and three portables at South Branch." Oxford-on-Rideau offers learning opportunities for students from junior kindergarten to grade 6. In 2017, 85 students were enrolled in the school, which has reduced by 56 per cent since 2007.
TENSIONS RISE ON COUNCIL OVER COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS had to compromise a little in terms of committee deployments." McCormick said he didn't know what process was taken to determine the appointments, and that he wasn't involved. "To say that my name wasn't associated to the North Grenville Police Services Board was a shock, an understatement," he said. "At no point have I received the rationale behind the assignment of the police services board. I take it as an insult. Tell me why I haven't been assigned the police services board." Peckford thanked McCormick for bringing forth his concerns. "The reality is that I received advice and feedback from a variety of council committees and boards," she explained. "In addition,
PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A North Grenville councillor and former police officer was not happy with the recommended council appointments that were presented by Mayor Nancy Peckford at the Jan. 14 council meeting. Coun. Craig McCormick took insult to the fact that he was not appointed to the North Grenville Police Services Board (PSB). Peckford introduced the matter by stating that she was aware of some discussion over social media in the form of a closed group where McCormick had expressed his discontent over not being appointed to the PSB. "I am certainly happy to address that this evening," she said. "I think everyone

there were multiple expressions of interest for the police services board. You are not the only person to have requested or expressed interest in that committee." Peckford explained that despite having expressed interest in the Kemptville District Hospital board, former nurse Coun. Doreen O'Sullivan was not appointed to it, just as Deputy Mayor Jim McManaman was not appointed to the police services board, despite expressing his specific interest. "As I connected with you earlier today, the minute that I learned of your significant distress, not fully understanding how much the police services board mattered to you, I did reach out to Don Sherritt, who is chair of the police services board, and asked if he
might come tonight in the event that we had to discuss that," Peckford said to McCormick. Sherritt explained that the PSB mandate is an oversight function, and that there is no specific reference to police experience as a requirement to serve on the board. "Experience on other committees and boards, however, is a considerable asset," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, everyone sitting up there meets the criteria to be on the police services board." Sherritt added that a police officer cannot serve on the board, as it is a conflict of interest. In response, McCormick said he was unclear on the process behind the appointments, and that he is a retired police officer of 20

that given your particular interest in kids' mental health, that the Kemptville [District] Hospital, where there is some real effort around kids' mental health, might be a really good fit for you." McCormick said he was surprised to see the matter listed as an item on the council agenda rather than on a committee of the whole agenda, as council decided to hold their discussions at committee of the whole meetings. He asked the director of corporate services/clerk, Cahl Pominville, if the item should have been on a committee of the whole agenda, to which Pominville replied that over his 24-year career, he has never seen any discussion on council appointments to committees. McCormick then requested that the motion to approve the recommended appointments be amended, but he changed his mind during the delivery of his own resolution, as he believed no one would second it.

"The experience I can bring on the municipal side of the fence, I think is indispensable," said McCormick. "I think I'd be a very good player to be on that board." Peckford reminded McCormick that Sherritt is not the one responsible for deciding to which boards council members are appointed. "The mayor is making recommendations for council deployments, and it is actually the will of this council that will make the final decision," she said. Sherritt reiterated that the PSB provides an oversight function, and that their policing expertise comes from their detachment commander. "Any person around the council table was equipped to make a meaningful contribution to the board," Peckford added. "I did not believe we were doing the police services board a disservice, and in fact, I felt

DEER RESCUED FROM LOCK IN MERRICKVILLE EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com The Merrickville Fire Department and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) were involved in an endearing rescue, saving a doe that became trapped in the upper lock right beside the Merrickville Blockhouse. The lock did not have water in it at the time. "This was an excellent team effort," said Mark Urquhart, Merrickville's fire chief.
The fire department received a call to assist the deer on Sunday, Jan. 13. Urquhart said the department waited until Monday for the MNRF to respond in order to tranquillize the deer before it was pulled out of the lock. "Kudos to the MNR(F)," he said. "I was very impressed with their efforts." Once the deer was sedated, the firefighters were able to assist with removing the deer from the lock using their ladder and rescue basket, normally
reserved for human patients. "It was nice to be a part of it," said Urquhart. "It was a very nice outcome." MNRF reports that the deer was released in a wooded area on Crown land, close to MerrickvIlle. They report that the prognosis of the animal is positive. "The deer was in good physical shape and walked into the woods on its own," said Jolanta Kowalski, senior media relations officer for the MNRF.

FORMATION OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING TASK FORCE BEGINS TEN COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO BE RECRUITED BEFORE FEB. 4 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com As Mayor Nancy Peckford first announced in her mayoral address, the Municipality of North Grenville is establishing an affordable housing task force. A maximum of 10 community members with a range of knowledge, skills and experience relevant to the task force's work will be recruited to serve alongside the mayor and a council member. "There is incredible talent in individuals and stakeholders in our community that are quite enthusiastic in looking at affordable housing options," Peckford said. She explained that the
task force is intended to leverage and capitalize on existing talent and enthusiasm, work with stakeholders, and use the period of one year to look at feasible affordable housing options and construct a critical path to make it a reality in North Grenville. "North Grenville is a rapidly evolving community where housing is becoming more expensive and rental options are very limited," said Peckford. "It is crucial that we develop a plan that better responds to the needs of low-income seniors, growing families, and our youth. Both the provincial and federal governments have prioritized this issue, and there are opportunities to make a difference." The task force's mandate, as described in the terms of reference released by the municipality on Jan. 16, is to examine the current state of affordable housing in North Grenville
and make recommendations on how it can be expanded to make affordable housing more accessible for residents. Such recommendations from the task force could call for council's action to increase access to subsidized housing, affordable rental housing, and affordable home ownership for low- to moderate-income households. The scope of the task force's work will be to first establish a "made in North Grenville" definition of affordable housing and identify current and projected needs for affordable housing within the municipality. Other responsibilities of the task force are outlined in the terms of reference as follows: • Identify existing affordable housing developments • Understand the municipality's current approach to increasing access to af-
fordable housing • Review North Grenville's official plan policies and zoning bylaw provisions • Identify enablers and inhibitors in current municipal bylaws, policies and procedures related to the goal of increasing access to affordable housing • Determine strategies to improve municipal access to programs and/or funding for the development of affordable housing through the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville • Research effective models of affordable housing and best practices of other municipalities across a wide variety of housing types • Identify potential partners and partnership strategies with private, nonprofit and government sectors • Identify vacant development lands within the municipality that have potential for affordable hous-
ing developments • Identify strategies to promote the conversion of non-residential and residential buildings for use as affordable housing • Review the federal government's national housing strategy and identify opportunities to seek funding through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund • Review the provincial government's long-term affordable housing strategy and identify partnership and/or funding opportunities Peckford believes that further discussions with local developers could also yield new opportunities to expand affordable housing in new developments. "We could also look at brand-new options that we've never even explored, in terms of innovating housing models, which could be enabled through the new federal housing 10year plan," she said.
The $4 billion national housing strategy will see 100,000 new homes built with financial assistance through the Canada Housing Benefit, in addition to the repair of 300,000 homes. The ambitious plan also aims to cut nationwide homelessness by 50 per cent. The affordable housing task force is to meet a minimum of 12 times over the course of its mandate, averaging once a month. The established timelines require an interim report be completed by the end of September and a final report to be presented to council by the end of January 2020. Applications to serve on the affordable housing task force are available on the municipal website at www.northgrenville.ca/ careers and can be dropped off in person at the North Grenville Municipal Centre or sent to housing@northgrenville.on.ca before Feb. 4 at 5 p.m.

SURVIVING WINTER ON THE FARM TAKES WISDOM AND LUCK FRIGID DAYS BROUGHT MANY PROBLEMS ON THE FARM, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column
I've just finished shovelling a foot of snow off the front step, and I pitched Ferg's beloved ball for him a few times to give him some exercise. The dog will spend the rest of the afternoon curled up on a sheepskin rug in front of the wood stove, while I putter around the house, preparing for Sunday dinner. It's Snowmaggedon on the farm. We may not get too many guests venturing out to our remote farm today, even if the snowplows have cleared the road, because it's just too cold. The weather man says this is the coldest snowstorm we have had in 100 years, at an average -23 degrees. Normally we get that kind of cold on a sunny winter day - not a snowy one. It is nice to finally see the snow this winter. It forms a barrier of insulation around the house, blocking the wind and sealing drafts. It has the
same effect on a barn. You pray for lots of snow when you have animals giving birth in winter, for this reason. There's nothing worse than a bitter, biting wind blasting across the pasture and through the cracks in the barn walls, freezing the baby animals inside. The trick to a creating a warm barn is to pack the animals in closely together. They warm up the place with their body heat. Cows don't mind the cold, and they give off plenty of heat so if you can host your goats or sheep in pens surrounded by cows, you've got it made. It will be warm as a sauna in there. One day several winters past I went to check on my baby lambs and the blanket that we hang outside that room in the barn had frozen to the wall. I hurried to pull it loose, worried that my newborns had frozen to death in their sleep. But as I opened the door to the lambing room, a wall of damp heat hit me in the face. It felt like a steam room in there. In every pen, a fat ewe lay comfortably chewing her cud, her babies tucked in beside her. That was a very snowy winter. The snow had formed a solid blanket around the barn, and we had a really good lambing season with a low mortality rate.
The weather man says this is the coldest snowstorm we have had in 100 years, at an average -23 degrees. One of the worst lambing seasons we had began during a winter of very little snow and very low temperatures. When it did snow, it blew right through the cracks in the barn walls, forming small drifts in the lambing pens. We hung blankets on windows and doors and stapled feed bags to the walls but without the barrier of snow outside to insulate the barn, we just couldn't keep it warm enough. That year I was constantly bundling wet newborn baby lambs up in towels and running them to the house, tucked inside my barn coat. There I carried them down to the basement, where the Farmer had set up a playpen with a heat lamp over it. I rubbed their little bodies dry and thawed out their frozen feet before carrying them back to the barn to meet their exhausted and overwhelmed
mothers. We had to put heat lamps in the pens, to keep the lambs alive. We turned them off at night, though, because the Farmer was afraid that one of the ewes might pull the hot lamp down into the hay, setting it alight. Hopefully someone has invented a cooltouch heat lamp since our lambing days - or a better way to keep animals warm in a drafty barn. Ideally if you are raising animals in a Canadian winter, you will erect a coverall barn or Quonset that you can heat if necessary. Big Sky Ranch, our local animal sanctuary, used donations to build a closed barn for their rescue animals. This winter, however, they have to turn on the heat to keep their 100 shelter animals alive. It will be a costly season, so if you can spare a few dollars, send it their way. Or if you just want to look around the house or barn and see what items you can spare for donation, head to their webpage for their wish list. On our own farm, we got smart and locked up the ram until December so the babies wouldn't be born until April. He wasn't pleased but we had a lot more healthy lambs born in springtime. BELL LET'S TALK ADDRESSES MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA Everyone is invited to join the conversation on Bell Let's Talk Day by sending messages of support across multiple platforms to drive both awareness and action in mental health. Bell will donate five cents to Canadian mental health programs for each of the following interactions, at no extra cost to participants beyond what they would normally pay their service provider for online or phone access: . Talk: Every mobile and every long distance call made by Bell wireless and phone customers; . Text: Every text message sent by Bell wireless customers; . Twitter: Every tweet and retweet using #BellLetsTalk, featuring the special Bell Let's Talk emoji, and Bell Let's Talk Day video view at Twitter.com/Bell_LetsTalk; . Facebook: Every view of the Bell Let's Talk Day video at Facebook.com/BellLetsTalk and use of the Bell Let's Talk frame; . Instagram: Every Bell Let's Talk Day video view at Instagram.com/bell_letstalk; and, . Snapchat: Every use of the Bell Let's Talk filter and video view. Total Bell Let's Talk Day interactions since the first event in 2011 stand at 867,449,649 and are expected to exceed 1 billion on Jan. 30. Bell's funding commitment for mental health, including the company's donations based on Bell Let's Talk engagement and its original $50-million donation to launch the initiative, is now $93,423,628.80 and expected to surpass $100 million on Jan. 30. Bell Let's Talk has made a $300,000 donation to CHEO to support the Choice and Partnership Approach (CAPA), a program to help reduce wait times and improve access to mental health care. CAPA decreases wait times and streamlines service delivery, empowering patients and families to be stewards of their own mental health through collaboration with clinicians to determine the optimum treatment plan. Donor support for this program will help CHEO reach its goal of being able to see patients for their first and second appointments within weeks, accelerating their access to the most effective care possible. "Access to care is the top mental health need, and too many of our children and youth in eastern Ontario go without proper care," says Dr. Kathleen Pajer, Chief of CHEO's Department of Psychiatry. "We strive to have every child and youth needing non-urgent outpatient care receive it within four weeks and we are working hard to achieve this goal with CAPA." The earlier we can start managing mental health, the better we set up our children and youth for success and their best lives. The Bell Let's Talk mental health initiative is focused on 4 key action pillars: Anti-stigma, Care and Access, Research and Workplace Leadership. To learn more, please visit Bell.ca/LetsTalk.

This is an issue which may take years to play out fully in our communities, and my concern is that it will draw time and energy away from matters that are far more pressing. The greatest concern for North Grenville's council ought to be the future of Kemptville College..."

LOCAL CATERER REVIVES KEMPTVILLE CAMPUS CAFETERIA PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The Kemptville Campus Education and Community Hub has established another partnership in their development of the former Kemptville College property. Local catering company, Catered Affairs, has served the North Grenville community and beyond for more than 10 years. Now, they've moved into the newly renovated cafeteria building on campus and have big plans for the space. Owner and chef, Natalie Castellas, and her husband and co-owner, Chris Drozda, gave North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford and Deputy Mayor Jim McManaman a tour of the facilities on Jan. 18. "The transition is easily creating another ten jobs," said Castellas. Catered Affairs is currently hiring drivers, servers, and deliv-
ery personnel to help with regular caterings through the week and on weekends. Castellas and her team have almost fully settled into the space since signing the lease on Christmas Eve, which came after one year of deliberations with campus and municipal staff. The takeover will see the company expand as Catered Affairs brings cooking classes, special events and more to the cafeteria building. The company currently provides hot lunches to students at both the French Public school, Rivière Rideau, and the French Catholic school, Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys, both located on campus, in addition to regular caterings for the Upper Canada District School Board and the Catholic District School Board. Catered Affairs also
provides full service for weddings and special events all year round. The company's former location was at Castellas' home, where the business quickly outgrew the industrial kitchen over the last ten years. "We just needed more space," said Castellas, "we couldn't handle any more jobs with the space that we had - we were capped at our maximum capacity." Castellas said she was faced with the choice of either scaling down business or going for something bigger and better. "We're hearing a lot of interest from people at the campus who want to see the cafeteria open for full service again," said Castellas. At this point, there aren't enough people on campus to warrant full service for the cafeteria, but as it grows and more tenants move in, Castellas See CATERED, page 12

CATERED AFFAIRS BRINGS COOKING CLASSES, NEW JOBS TO CAMPUS Continued from page 9
said it will be an opportunity worth looking at in the future. For now, her vision is to utilize the building as an event space. "We're able to do weddings on the grounds, beautiful corporate events, big events that we've already taken on like the ploughman's dinner, the rural summit, and the Father's Day event for the Highway 43 Car Club." The cafeteria building also features a lounge room with a large dining table for groups, couches, and a fireplace, where Castellas says smaller events and intimate dinners can be accommodated nicely. "We also want to do cooking classes," she said. The cafeteria building is equipped with many kitchens, and one of them that is situated near the lounge is perfect in Castellas' vision for cooking classes for 8-10 people.
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland This room within the cafeteria building of the Kemptville Campus is perfect for business meetings and special events. Right: Catered Affairs will host a variety of cooking classes in this area of the cafeteria building on campus. But her plans don't stop there. Castellas wants to work with the schools on campus to deliver culinary programming. "I'm at the point where
I'm starting to invite the schools over for lessons on basic food preparation and production. We want to get the students involved in that," she said. She also confirmed that
Catered Affairs is working with campus and municipal staff to develop a farm to school program, which will see students participate in maintaining their own gardens and using
best practices in composting. Castellas said she'd also like to see a program allow other food-oriented businesses in the community utilize the kitchens for
production. Stay tuned at www.InsideOttawaValley.com for further updates on the Kemptville Campus Education and Community Hub.

ROBBIE BURNS DINNER AND WHISKY TASTING SET FOR JAN. 25 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Catered Affairs will be hosting a special fourcourse Robbie Burns dinner featuring traditional Scottish dishes and five scotch pairings in their new space at the Kemptville Campus Friday, Jan. 25. The local catering company has established a new partnership with the Kemptville Campus Education and Community Hub and the Municipality of North Grenville as they settle into the former Kemptville College cafeteria building. Robbie Burns day is the annual celebration of the life and poetry of 18th century Scottish poet. Owner and chef Natalie Castellas and her husband and co-owner, Chris Droz-
da, are looking forward to the event. "Chris and I are big scotch fans, but we don't only like to drink the scotch we like to understand the story behind it, too," said Castellas. Their friend, Geoffrey Skeggs, taught the whisky sommelier course at Algonquin College and will be guiding guests through a tasting of five Scotches, paired with the four-course traditional Robbie Burns dinner. The menu promises to take guests on an educational culinary tour of Scotland, as Skeggs talks about the diverse distilleries located from the coast to inland. The high-end single malt scotches are roughly $100-$120 a bottle. "Course by course, Geoffrey will go through the

LEVI, John
(Community Leader and Entrepreneur) It is with the deepest sadness that Helen and her family announce that John passed away suddenly but peacefully in Kissimmee, Florida while surrounded by loved ones on Sunday afternoon, January 13th, 2019. He was 76 years old. A devoted and loving husband for more than 52 years, he will be profoundly missed by his wife Helen (nee Giles), and their children Tanice Levi (Eric Katmarian) of Ottawa; Tracy Brown (Tony), Terri-Lynn Currie and Thomas Levi (Michele), all of Almonte. A cherished and proud “Grandpa”, he will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Dylan, Colin, Jackson, Sophia, John, Jake, Emily, William, Timothy and Julia. John’s dear brothers James (Sandra) of North Carolina; Art (Helen) of Almonte and Edward “Ted” (Nancy) of Pakenham as well as his many nieces and nephews are also in our hearts. Predeceased by his parents, John and Helen (nee Campbell) Levi as well as his brother, Randall (Louise) of Kingston, we know John is not alone. Family and his community meant everything to John. As an entrepreneur and member of many community service groups and sports organizations, he shared his passions for “making a deal” and serving others. He was very, very proud of his legacy with Home Hardware, having grown the business from a small space on Mill St. to its current location. When John retired ten years ago, it was a great source of pride and joy that his son, Thomas, took over and continued to expand and grow the store. As a politician (Councillor, Mayor, and Deputy Mayor), John worked tirelessly to build and improve his community, always with a focus on the things he saw as practical and necessary to provide opportunities for growth and improved quality of life for the residents of Mississippi Mills. He believed absolutely in the motto: “Equal opportunities for all, no special favours for anyone.” As a member and past-president of the Almonte Civitan Club for over 30 years, a past Master of the Almonte Masonic Lodge, a dedicated member for many years of the Almonte Chamber of Commerce (formerly the BIA), and a coach and executive member of a variety of sports clubs in Almonte, John devoted countless hours directly impacting the lives of many local residents. In particular, John was passionate about ringette and coached his three daughters for many years. Their incredible shared experiences included participation in an international tournament in Finland, the Ontario Winter Games, and several provincial championship finals. In 1991, John was inducted into the Ontario Ringette Hall of Fame as a community builder of the sport. John loved to travel and never missed an opportunity to experience new things. He fought for what he believed in and never lost his desire to change the world. We are so very proud of him and grateful for his time here on Earth. Family and friends were invited to pay their respects during visitation at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior on Saturday, January 19th from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, January 20th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Tribute to John took place in the Pilon Family Chapel on Monday afternoon, January 21st at 1 o’clock. GILLIS Neil Robert Theodore
February 12, 1934 to January 1, 2019 Neil was the son of Bernard and Ina (Peters) Gillis and was born in Pictou, NS. He had three sisters: Mary (Emberley), Olive (Fosty), Bernice (Hardy) and a step-sister, Isabel Campbell (Riggs) (deceased). Neil is predeceased by his wife, Margaret Elizabeth (Campbell) Gillis with whom he had 4 children: Robert, Carleton Place, ON; Wanda (deceased); Joanne, Arnprior, ON; and Kevin, Okotoks, AB. He is also predeceased by his common-law spouse of 17 years, Fran Gavel, with whom he lived in Lower Sackville until he moved in to the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building in December, 2017. Neil is survived by his grandchildren: Stephanie; Richard (Samantha), David (Christine), Diana (Matt), Bob, and Turner Cole, and by his great grandchildren:Ryan, Emma, Makenna, Abby, Gavin, Carter, Tye, Payton, Phoebe, Noah and Jade. Neil had many nieces, nephews. Neil came from humble beginnings and learned the ways of nature and the woods at a very young age. He was living in Pictou on his own when he met an RCMP officer who Neil credited with taking him to the recruiting office and getting him signed up to join the army. Although Neil was not old enough, he was a tall lad with a frame to fit; he had no problem getting in. He said he was always grateful to that Officer for what he called, “setting him on the right path”. He was a Corporal, Gunner, and spent his career in the army in many European countries, but most notable was his service in the Korean War. He saw things he could never talk about, but talked about many of the great people he met and places he had been. He rubbed shoulders with royalty, movie stars, athletes and politicians, and was proud to tell you about them. Neil was very proud to be a member of Canada’s military, and, as an extension of that, a member of the Black Watch of Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion. Although Neil suffered through many medical issues throughout his life, he was always thankful that he was in control of his mind, and he loved to learn new things. While he did not go to school beyond the 6th grade, he was proud to say that his IQ score when he entered the Army was 159. Neil was always thankful for the medical care over the years, but he was most thankful to the staff at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building. They treated him with respect and encouraged him to engage with as many people as possible, especially new arrivals on his floor. Neil was a soft spoken person and frequently spent time with new residents to make them feel at home and to help them settle in. He loved the staff at Camp Hill, and they loved him. He took part in everything from the food committee meetings to playing bocce. Special thanks go out to the staff at Camp Hill. Thank you. He loved nature and was happy to just drop a line the in the water; no matter if he caught anything. He loved to sit and watch the animals and birds; especially his beloved eagles. When you see an eagle, think of Neil. When Neil left the army he enjoyed many years with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires in the Ottawa area where he lived with his family. He especially enjoyed his work because of all the people he met and got to know over the years. Neil always called Pictou home, and he moved back to New Glasgow in his retirement years. It was there that he met Fran and with whom he spent 17 years in Lower Sackville. Fran’s children were as much his family as his own and he will be greatly missed by both families. Cremation has taken place, and a small private family ceremony will be held at a later date to say our last good byes. For Memorial donations, please consider the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or the Human Body Donation Program, Dept. of Medical Neuroscience, Dalhousie University.

Saturday morning. My house chores were done and I was at my usual place at the kitchen table, colouring with my crayons, the picture which came every week in the Ottawa Farm Journal. The big soup pot sat on the back burner of the stove with regular wisps of steam lifting the lid in a steady putt-putt. The soup pot never left the stove. In it was every leftover to leave our table. The heel of an onion, a bit of leftover potato, the end of a sausage, a bit of pork chop ... it all went into the soup pot. If Father came in mid-afternoon from the barn, chilled to the bone, Mother would put a buttered piece of bread in the bottom of a soup bowl, and ladle on a heaping portion out of the soup pot. And we
often had a bowl before we went to bed. That Saturday morning, Mother was making her soup specialty, which Father had finally admitted was right up there with the soup in the pot that sat on the back burner of the Findlay Oval. A ham bone, with lots of smoked meat still on it, had been simmering all morning. On the bake table was a big bowl of yellow split-peas right out of Briscoe's General Store. Before going to bed the night before, Mother covered the peas with water, and it looked to me like they had doubled in size, and now just about filled the bowl, having swelled up during the night. This was going to be Mother's French Canadian pea soup. When she first made it, she made the mistake of calling it by its proper name, so Father would have nothing to do with it. But one day, when the regular soup pot was just about empty, he agreed he didn't have much choice, and he took his first sip of Mother's pea soup! Well, as Mother said, "it was like he had discovered America." He asked for a second bowl, even though he should have "just
a spoon or two" before he dug into his supper! So ever after, even though the catch-all soup pot was always on the back of the stove, Mother's French Canadian pea soup was considered a special treat, and I watched as she put it all together. Now, Mrs. Beam, a neighbour and a good friend of Mother's, got wind of Mother's special soup. German to her backbone, she chose to ignore Mother's French Canadian background, so Mother never gave the soup its proper name ... she just called it pea soup. The Saturday was busy as usual ... Audrey doing her regular chores, mine finished, the kitchen busy with Mother pounding down bread for the oven, and the makings of the pea soup already simmering on the Findlay Oval. Then, in walked Mrs. Beam mid-afternoon, and she stopped dead in her tracks, sniffing the air around her. Of course, she knew of the special soup, but had never tasted it. Mother offered her a bowl to take the chill out of her bones, and Mrs. Beam, who never refused the offer of food,

plopped down at the kitchen table. It didn't take her long to polish off the bowl, and accepted Mother's offer of a bit more to tide her over until supper. Wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, she asked Mother if the soup had a name. I saw Mother pause, take a deep breath and say, "just call it pea soup, Mrs. Beam ... I'm not much for putting names on foods," avoiding of course, telling her it was French Canadian pea soup. Well, Mrs. Beam thought it should have a name, and she rhymed off a few, all in German of course, that she thought described the pea soup. Well, the names meant nothing to Mother, but she said if Mrs. Beam wanted to call it that, that was fine with her. When Father came in for his supper, Mother told him the soup had a new name, and she did the best she could with trying to remember what Mrs. Beam had called it in German. Father squinted and asked Mother to repeat what Mrs. Beam had said. She did the best she could. Father threw back his head and laughed. "Well, it has a name all right. It's now called pea soup." THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
