CRAIG MCCORMICK RESIGNS FROM COUNCIL ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com After less than two months in office, the makeup of North Grenville council is changing following the resignation of Coun. Craig McCormick. According to a press release issued by the Municipality of North Grenville on the afternoon of Jan. 24, McCormick submitted his resignation to clerk/director of corporate services, Cahl Pominville, effective Jan. 22. He cited personal reasons as the motivation behind the decision. "We appreciate the considerable efforts that Mr. McCormick made to fulfill his responsibilities and wish him all the best in future endeavours," stated Deputy Mayor Jim McManaman in the release. Upon being reached by this newspaper, McCormick stated he has "nothing further to add other

Craig McCormick than what is in the (press) release." Wasting no time in filling the seat, council has appointed Kristin Strackerjan, a candidate in the Oct. 22 municipal election race, as councillor. She had the next highest number of votes with 2,402. This appointment follows bylaw 51-16 which allows council to fill a vacancy within six months

of an election "by appointing the person who would have been elected next based on the number of votes as long as they received at least 40 per cent of the votes cast and have consented to accept the office." Strackerjan accepted and will be sworn in at the Feb. 5 special meeting of council. " ... I am enthusiastic about serving all the residents of North Grenville in this new capacity," she stated. "We look forward, as a council, to working with Ms. Strackerjan in her new capacity," confirmed Mayor Nancy Peckford. "Ms. Strackerjan ran a vigorous campaign and came a close fifth in the election for municipal councillor." More local businesses are stepping up to host fundraising initiatives for Big Sky Ranch, a volunteerrun animal sanctuary in Kemptville. The ranch is struggling to keep their barns warm this winter, as well as cover costs for electricity, vet bills, and feed for the ani-

mals. Owner of Big Sky Ranch, Andy Parent, and his son, Andrew, run the organization with a small team of devoted volunteers. Kemptville's RBC Royal Bank will be hosting a bake sale fundraiser with all the proceeds going to Big Sky Ranch. "We've seen lots of articles about Big Sky having some troubles with heating the barns and getting donations at this time of year," said Miranda Martin, client advisor at RBC. "We figured RBC could do something to help." The bake sale is set for Thursday, Jan. 31 and will

run while the bank is open, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Martin says if all goes well, they will continue the fundraiser the following day, on Friday, Feb. 1st. "We are asking clients and non-clients to bring in baked goods donations for the sale, and staff will also be baking for the sale," she said. All baked donations are asked to be brought in by Wednesday, Jan. 30th. RBC Royal Bank is located within the Kemptville Mall at 2600 County Road 43. 'TWO YEARS GIVES US TIME': HOPE RESTORED FOR PARENTS OF OXFORD-ON-RIDEAU STUDENTS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com It's been almost two years since families across eastern Ontario received devastating news confirming the closures of 12 public schools, including Oxfordon-Rideau in Oxford Mills. The announcement took an emotional toll on the small rural community, prompting nine local parents to form a group called Save Our School (SOS), through which they've collectively worked tirelessly to produce as many saving graces as possible for the school. Local mother of two Oxford-on-Rideau students, Jen Monk, is one of the passionate members of the SOS group. Her family resides a block away from the school; close enough to hear the children playing

The public elementary school in the hamlet of Oxford Mills in North Grenville recently received news that its closure, formerly set for this year, has been delayed until June 2021. outside during recess. Monk remembers her reaction to the news of the closure well.

"It brought me to tears I was overwhelmed and overcome with emotion," she said. "My heart broke,

just thinking that we have chosen this school, and now we might be forced to put our children some-

where else." Monk's son, Sawyer, is in junior kindergarten and her daughter, Piper, is in grade 1. She moved to Oxford Mills with her husband and children in 2014 and immediately fell in love with the community and with Oxford-on-Rideau. The closure was initially set for September 2018, before the Upper Canada District School Board put it off until June 2019. Even better news surfaced on Jan. 16 of this year, when parents received a letter from the school board announcing that the closure has once again been delayed, this time for two more years, preserving the school's life until June 2021. "It means Sawyer gets to go through his kinder years there, which I think is the most important - get-

CANADIAN TIRE DONATES SKATES, HELMETS TO LENDING LIBRARY PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com More families will be able to enjoy public skating events in Kemptville, thanks to the generosity of a local business. As a result of a significant sponsorship from Canadian Tire in Kemptville, the Skate & Helmet Lending Library at the North Grenville Municipal Centre has expanded. The donation of 20 new helmets and 24 new pairs of skates came in response to an increase in demand at the library. "We have found that since we put the helmet rule into place, where children aged 12 and under have to wear a helmet, that a lot more people are requesting helmets and we don't have enough to go around most of the time," said Tammy Hurlbert, recreation co-ordinator at the municipality. She said the majority of the helmets and skates will

be lent out on a weekly basis. Hurlbert also noted the skates will be particularly helpful when local schools visit to use the ice. "A lot of the little ones don't have their own skates, and the schools are always trying to find some for them, so now that we make the library available while they visit, they can access the skates and helmets, too." Mayor Nancy Peckford said she is delighted by the ongoing generosity of the community and local business leaders. "The expansion of the lending library really creates an all-inclusive experience for any family in our community that wants to partake in these activities," she said. "Canadian Tire demonstrates a strong commitment to making a healthy and active lifestyle affordable for all ages." Canadian Tire owner Frank Hoffman was an original partner in the creation of the lending library

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland On Jan. 25, members of North Grenville council and municipal staff visited Canadian Tire in Kemptville as the store donated 20 helmets and 24 pairs of skates to the Skate & Helmet Lending Library at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. Pictured, from left: Coun. Doreen O'Sullivan, sports manager Valerie Arcand, store manager Jacki Barrett, Canadian Tire owner Frank Hoffman, Mayor Nancy Peckford, and director of parks, recreation and culture, Mark Guy. in 2015 and believes in supporting the community through various initiatives, including previous donations of geocaching equipment and Nordic walking poles through the North Grenville Public Library.

"I always look for ways to help our community and care about the youth in North Grenville," stated Hoffman. "In partnership with our local Jumpstart program, we were able to donate skates to the municipality' lending initiative

several years ago and it only made sense to provide helmets to keep everyone safe." Hoffman said he is pleased to offer more helmets to ensure that everyone will have the opportunity to be active and enjoy

the Canadian sport of skating. The municipality first started the Skate & Helmet Lending Library in 2015 when they received a grant from the Ontario Sport & Recreation Community Fund. The goal of the library is to increase physical activity for all ages, remove financial barriers to participation, and, with the availability of helmets in all sizes, to reinforce the importance of safety and preventing head injuries while on the ice. The lending program is available during public skating hours and school visits. Equipment is signed in and out, and cleaned by a municipal staff member, with regular inspections and sharpening of skates. Valid photo identification is the only thing required to borrow the equipment. The municipal centre also lends skate aids during family skating hours and school visits for those who are learning to skate.

SIGN-MAKING WORKSHOP SUPPORTS BIG SKY RANCH JAN. 31 After word got out that Big Sky Ranch animal sanctuary in Kemptville is struggling to cover costs to heat their barns, local business owner Julianna MelnickMacDonald of Willow & Rose organized a fun signmaking workshop fundraiser to help out. Willow & Rose specializes in handmade home decor items and offers DIY workshops throughout the year. They also sell bath products, candles, accessories, jewelry, and more. Fifty per cent of the proceeds from the Jan. 31 workshop will be donated to Big Sky Ranch. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. "This winter has been particularly challenging for their team, so we would love to help them out," Julianna said in a Facebook post on her business' page. Melnick-MacDonald and her two daughters visit the sanctuary regularly throughout the year and she

says they have come to "know and love their furry and feathered family well." Big Sky Ranch is run by Andy Parent and his son, Andrew, and many helping hands of devoted volunteers. On Jan. 23, The Kemptville Advance visited the sanctuary and the variety of animals they care for. Andrew said keeping the barns warm enough for the roughly 120 animals is a struggle they face every winter. "We try to keep temperatures above freezing, at least," he said. But keeping the animals warm isn't the only struggle the sanctuary is facing. In addition to propane heating for their barns, the volunteer-run organization relies on donations to help feed the animals, provide bedding, cover electricity costs, and pay vet bills. "There's always something, and there's always lots to do," said Andrew. "We're expanding, too." The team is currently

Big Sky Ranch is currently struggling to cover their heating, electricity, food, and vet bills and are looking to the community for help. working on constructing new spaces for the animals and rebuilding old pens and fencing. Andy said they recently had to pay a roughly $1,500 vet bill. On a monthly basis,

they pay between $1,200 and $1,400 for propane to heat the barns. "We need to stabilize ourselves so we can get through the winter," he said. "Right now, I'd say we're paying

about $5,000 a month for those four big bills - heating, electrical, feed, and vet bills." All of the ranch's work is done by hardworking volunteers.

THE CATS OF WINTER DIANA FISHER TALKS ABOUT SOLUTIONS TO CAT OVERPOPULATION DIANA FISHER Column

We once had an active working barn full of animals. There were sheep and lambs on one side, cattle on the other, a roaming donkey and a couple of horses. The barn was separated in half - one side opening out to the grassy pasture for the cows and the closest side opened up to the barnyard where we could see them from the house. Each side had their own water fountain and hay bale, all year round. Each side had shelter from the storm and the wintry cold. Each night the animals packed themselves in tightly together and their body heat kept each other warm. It was the perfect home for a barn cat. The felines wandered the barn at night, searching for a cosy place to curl up. Sometimes they made a bed by curling their little bodies up in the sheep feeders, lined with hay. They slept just out of reach

of the ewe's teeth, in the farthest corner of the pen. Other times I found them tucked deep inside a hay bale that was giving off its own heat as it silently fermented in the loft. Barn cats are tough, because they are accustomed to hunting for their food (even though their rodent diet is supplemented with cat kibble) and they know how to find shelter from the elements. Then there is the other kind of feral cat - the stray cat in that you find living in the garbage bin behind the pizza joint in town. Like the barn cat, the street cat may also prefer a life of freedom as opposed to being domesticated and made into someone's pet. My girls tried to tame a "pizza bin cat" once. It escaped. My own barn cats prefer to be outside, only venturing in long enough to dart downstairs and scoff down a quick meal before shooting out between the legs of the next person who opens a door to the fresh air. Ideally, all of these feral cats would be healthy and vibrant, enjoying their lives and contributing to their environment by controlling the rodent population. But how to control the cat population? A healthy adult female will have an average four kittens each time she gets pregnant -

and this can happen more than once per season. You do the math. That's a lot of kittens. When I moved into the farm I took it upon myself to gain control of the barn cat population. First, I wanted to make them healthy. I hated seeing all those runny eyes and hearing kitten sneezes. I mixed homeopathic medications and fed them immunity boosters in their water. The next spring, 10 mother cats had 40 kittens. Well, Operation Healthy Cat sort of backfired. I had 10 (count 'em, 10) of our healthy barn cats neutered. This is not a cost-effective endeavour, under any circumstances. Some vets will give you a special rate to "fix" your barn cats if you have a working farm. But we really do need a better system, so that we don't have sickly, overbred cats wandering the countryside, and the neighbourhood. Smiths Falls seems to have found a solution. In the news last week, Lanark County has agreed to earmark $3,000 for a spay-neuter program. I think it's time for North Grenville to pursue the same kind of funding from our county offices. I will be writing a letter to our mayor, asking her to advocate on our behalf. What we need is the TNR (trap - neuter - re-

UPCOMING MEETINGS

lease) program for feral cats. There are people doing this already in most cities, including Ottawa. You set a live trap, and when you catch yourself an angry, wild kitty you bring it to the co-operating vet. Not just any vet - there are designated professionals experienced in TNR programs and the rather feisty patients involved. Some vets even have a little Plexiglas box of some sort (I imagine like an incubator) where they can put the whole catin-cage inside. Then they release the gas that puts the cat under so they can do the surgery and check for any other injuries that need treatment. Some of my feral cats were treated this way - it's really the only way to operate on a wild cat without resulting in the need for surgery yourself. If you have any personal stories related to the need for an affordable spay-neuter solution on your farm or in your neighbourhood, send them to the mayor. Maybe we can find a responsible way to help feral cats keep living their best lives. Diana Leeson Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. It's about trust. Our relationship with our readers is built on transparency, honesty and integrity. As such, we have launched a trust initiative to tell you who we are and how and why we do what we do. This column is part of that project. If you've logged on to our news website, InsideOttawaValley.com, over the past four months, you've likely noticed the green banner at the top asking you to register and support local journalism. And if you've read more than two stories in any of those months, you've also seen a message blocking part of the third article, asking you to register to continue reading. Many of you have answered the call - providing us your name, email address and postal code to get unlimited access to our local news and information, as well as permission to comment on articles and submit your own content. Thank you for your support. Others have hesitated. And some have called, emailed or posted on our Facebook page to ask: Why are you asking me to register? What are you doing with this information? How many articles do you read when you get there? What subject matter interests you most? Social issues? Local council happenings? Crime? Things to do? Are you more likely to read news local to your neighbourhood or about wider regional issues? Will you stick around to read longer, investigative pieces or are you looking for quick reads? SAVE OUR SCHOOL GROUP CONTINUES TO FIGHT CLOSURE Continued from page 3

Local journalism makes a difference. Support us by registering at insideottawavalley.com parents' most pressing issues with the proposed transition is that it'll put the kids in portables. "That was one of our main focuses in our presentations for the school board and the superintendents," she said. "The school board only builds for the current enrollment - they don't build for future growth. Kemptville Public School was built brand new with two portables - it just doesn't make sense." Could the school be saved by robots? The SOS group's efforts have gone as far as introducing a Robotics program at the school, which sees the elementary students develop their own computer coding to dictate the actions of robots. The program was formed by Brent and Katie Lekx-Toniolo, whose two daughters attend Oxford-on-Rideau.

"We're very passionate, very driven, and very eager to fight really hard."

– Jen Monk

"Programming and robotics is not just for programmers and engineers anymore," said Lekx-Toniolo. "A large majority of careers these days have an unwritten requirement to understand at least some of the fundamentals of the technologies we use." When school board trustees voted in favour by a single vote - of closing Oxford-on-Rideau on March 23, 2017, both Lisa Swan and John McAllister

spoke in favour of developing a tech centre at the school; an idea proposed by Lekx-Toniolo. The tech centre would be a place where students from across the region could come to learn the basics of coding and robotics. Monk agrees that learning computer programming is vital for children today, as "they need to learn coding if they're going to get any jobs," she said. The robotics program is just one of many unique assets that she believes makes Oxford-on-Rideau a truly special school. She explained the many perks that her children have an Oxford-on-Rideau, including more outdoors time, a beautiful property, gym time every day, access to the library, and especially, one-on-one time with their teachers. "They're so welcoming and accommodating at that school - it's like family, and it was family the first week that Piper started there," she said. "We don't want to lose the small, rural aspect of why we moved here in the first place and why we chose this specific area for our children, which was 90 per cent for that school." Monk believes the incoming Shaker Village subdivision, in addition to new lots currently being built by Lockwood Brothers Construction, only brings more potential for the school to remain open. "A lot can happen in two years, and that's definitely on our side," she said of the new developments. "It could mean six more kids, or more - you never know." Another Oxford-on-Rideau parent and member of the SOS movement, Heather Stewart, said the best part of the small, rural

harder for Oxford-on-Rideau over the next two years. "We're very passionate, very driven, and very eager to fight really hard," said Monk. "We're all doing this for our kids. It's going to be so nice when they're old enough to understand what we have done for them. We're teaching them that hard work prevails, that you can win, and that when you work together as a team, wonderful things can happen - but it takes a lot of hard work."

STORY BEHIND THE STORY:

This story was written to expose the reality of what parents and families of Oxford-on-Rideau students are experiencing as they fight to keep their local elementary school open. The intent is to also address the closure's delay, looking at what it means for these families.

at South Branch Elementary in Kemptville, where the students will be moved. However, South Branch is already currently hosting students from North Grenville District High School, as the high school undergoes expansion. Monk believes one of the only ways the threatened school stands a chance is for local families to enroll over the next two years - if not at Oxford-onRideau, then at South Branch Elementary, so there is no extra space to put the displaced students. "Two years gives us time," she said. "Two years gives a chance for South Branch to become over capacity - and they won't move us if South Branch is over capacity. As it is now, there's barely enough room for our kids there." Oxford-on-Rideau is currently home to roughly 80 students. The SOS group has spent the last two years brainstorming, fundraising, and researching the school board's justification for the closure. Monk says their reasoning doesn't always add up. "We found so many flaws in their research - so many statistics that prove the population growth and the fact that there's not going to be any room for our kids at South Branch," she said. Over the 2017-2018 school year, the SOS group found that South Branch saw a two per cent increase in enrollment. The two closure delays for Oxford-onRideau have only encouraged the parents to keep up the fight. "We went through a lot of meetings and we felt kind of pulled along through those - like [the school board] had already made their decision beforehand," she said. "It was a lot of work for us." Monk said one of the

school is that specialized programs can be introduced with less hoops to jump through. "There are always volunteers to help us accommodate these goals and the kids benefit from feeling a part of these developments," she said. "I truly believe they feel like their voices are heard at Oxfordon-Rideau, and they're able to contribute to programs that they request, such as a gardening, dance and gymnastics, or robotics." Stewart made a clear distinction between what Oxford-on-Rideau students are capable of in

their current rural setting, which she believes would not be possible in a larger school outside of their community. "For anyone out there that thinks a rural school is just a blip that doesn't have any importance because it's small and doesn't service 400+ children, I challenge them to think of who these kids will become," she said. "These are the kids that will grow our food, take care of our animals, care for our environment and community, and use automation to make our lives easier, but also know the balance of technology and outdoor play." "They will be the kids that learned they can make a change for the better," Stewart continued, "and that they weren't just a number to shove in a portable." The SOS group will continue their research, fundraising, and fighting even

2019 BUDGET TIMELINES SET PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The municipality has released the dates for North Grenville's 2019 budget discussions. The new mayor and council are looking forward to building on the success of last year's budget consultations, which enabled the community to work directly with council members on proposals. Two additional discussion forums have been planned as part of the consultation process. "We hope that individuals seize the occasion to participate in one of these sessions," said Mayor Nancy Peckford. "As a new council, we understand how important it to reflect the needs of the community in this budget while always being fiscally responsible." The first public discussion is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 4 at Maplewood Hall in Oxford Mills, beginning at 7 p.m. The second will be held Thursday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the North Grenville Municipal Centre in Kemptville, within halls B and C. These meetings will include presentations from director of finance, Marcus Hewitt, and chief administrative officer, Brian Carré, and inform the community as to how groups can make budget requests. "Information is power, and at every step along the way, we want residents and businesses to have the benefit of the informa-

tion that council will use to make its budget decisions," Peckford added. The plan is for the Feb. 4 and Feb. 7 discussions to be streamed live over social media so those who cannot make it to the meetings can watch from home. After these discussions, the following budget-related meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the municipal centre: Council will receive budget requests from community groups on Wednesday, Feb. 13; decisions on community requests will be made on Wednesday, Feb. 20; the operational budget will be reviewed on Wednesday, Feb. 27; the capital budget is to be examined on Wednesday, March 6; the draft budget will receive final review on Wednesday, March 12; and the final budget is scheduled to be adopted at the Tuesday, March 19 council meeting. "The proposed schedule gives the community both informal and formal opportunities to present for budget requests," said Peckford. "In the case of the more informal meetings happening on Feb. 4 and 7, it is a chance for the community to better understand the fiscal realities of the municipality, budget fundamentals in terms of where both constraints and opportunities lie, and also a chance to express themselves in a more informal form." Information related to the budget process will be posted at www.northgrenville.ca/budget as it becomes available.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? BROKEN WATER MAIN

A water main break at the corner of Prescott Street and Concession Road in Kemptville disrupted the flow of traffic on Jan. 23 as a crew worked all day long on the repair. The Municipality of North Grenville reported the incident on their Facebook page at 9 a.m. and director of public works, Karen Dunlop, said the repairs wrapped by just before 5 p.m. "It was an all-day job, because under the asphalt, there was a layer of concrete that the crew had to break through," said Dunlop. "That slowed us down a bit, and of course, the weather wasn't co-operating as well." Dunlop said the break was likely due to extreme temperature swings causing the ground to swell and contract, which provides excessive pressure on the water main. In addition, the pipe that broke was a vintage cast-iron pipe from the 60s. Water flow to homes in the area was only shut off briefly and the quality of the drinking water was not affected. "We always throttle back the water to impact as few houses as possible," said

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Dunlop. "As long as we can maintain positive pressure, and there's no possibility of sucking dirty water back into the main, then we don't have to shut the water off." Dunlop said up and downstream water testing was also conducted after the repairs to ensure that the water had chlorine-residual bacteriological content, which is standard operating procedure for a water main break.

OPINION

EMERSON DREADED MONTHLY HAIRCUT 'ORDEAL' THE MOST MOTHER MASTERED THE CRAFT OVER TIME, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

insideottawavalley.com

Emerson called it an ordeal, which was a word I wasn't familiar with, but I knew it had something to do with his hate for the Saturday night haircut. Once a month, my three brothers and Father had their hair cut by Mother, who through trial and error became good at the job, even though Emerson complained loud

and long about the results. Earl and Everett were no problem. Their hair was as straight as a die, but Emerson's, like mine, was a mass of red curls. I used to think his hair was the same colour as the bricks in a house ... much darker than mine. How he hated having it cut. He said the scissors hurt, which was sheer nonsense. What really bothered him, was sitting still for the time it took Mother to do the job. I was sitting at the kitchen table watching. Mother always left Emerson to the last. First it was Father, then Earl and then Everett, and by the time it was Emerson's turn to sit on the sheet-draped stool, he had worked himself in-

to a lather. Mother combed it first, which was a chore in itself, because his hair, as well as being curly, was thick, and so that started the yelling before she even got near him with the scissors. Of course, I enjoyed every minute of his misery, which was like a payback for all the times he made my life miserable! When Mother first started cutting hair, she used a vegetable bowl placed upside down on top of the boys' heads to make everything come out even. But I have to admit, the bowl did nothing to make the haircut presentable. It gave the boys bangs which they hated, and every morning before they went to school, they doused

613-692-2121

1145 Bridge Street, Manotick, ON K4M 0G8 ManotickPlaceRetirement.ca

their heads with water and combed their hair back. This worked fine for Everett and Earl, because their hair was fine and straight, but as soon as Emerson combed his hair back off his forehead, it sprang forward and no amount of slicking it down with water could keep it back off his face. It wasn't as much of a problem in the wintertime, because just before heading out for school, he doused it well with water, held it down, combed it back, and slammed on his toque to hold it all in place. By the time he got to the Northcote School, it was pretty well settled down. Father usually fell asleep when Mother was

cutting his hair, and she would have to give him a good poke in his shoulder to keep him awake. She used the big sheers she kept in her sewing machine drawer, and it wasn't unusual to hear one of the boys or Father give a yelp when she came too close to an ear, and maybe even give it little nip. Then she would holler "if you would keep still, we'd all come out of this unscathed." Only on very rare occasions did Father have his hair cut in Renfrew at the barbers. After all it cost 75 cents! That's about all Mother got from selling a chicken! But when his sister came from Regina in the summer time for her yearly visit, Father would head into Renfrew, grumbling all the way about the waste of money. Mother would dig into her egg money and pull out enough coins to cover the cost of a haircut done by someone who knew what he was doing. And Father would come home looking like one of those

classy businessmen found on the main street in town. I would see him catching a glimpse of himself in the green-framed mirror that hung at the back door over the wash basin on the bench. There was no resemblance between the town haircut and Mother's, done once a month on a stool in the kitchen. I would sit at the kitchen table on the night for the haircuts and do nothing but watch and listen. For me it was almost as much fun as the Saturday night house party or going into Renfrew to the picture show. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? DEATH NOTICE

Kell, Gladys Louise (nee Davis)

Born on September 30,1917 in Griffin, Quebec, passed away peacefully at the remarkable age of 101 on January 22, 2019 in Almonte, Ontario. Louise (as she was known) was the beloved wife of the late James. She was preceded in death by her sisters Dorothy and Isabel. Louise is survived by her daughter Linda (Ron) Keymer, and her sons James (Christine) and Terry (Daniela Keon); grandchildren Geoffrey, Audrey (Matt), David (Sarah), Harrison, Anthony, Jesse, Sophie, Drew and great granddaughter Foley as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews living both here and in Northern Ireland. Louise will be remembered for many things. Although shy and quiet she had a quick wit and could easily be coaxed to dance and make funny faces. She was thoughtful and ever helpful to others and volunteered locally. As an avid Montreal Canadians fan she rarely missed a game and could be counted on to know all the details of the games. Louise shared James’ love of gardening and nature, was a lifelong lover of cats and kittens, and in her declining years got much enjoyment from chocolates and sweets. As a loving mother, grand and great grandmother she was devoted to her family and was the go to person for any and all family history and dates. Most of Louise’s married life was spent in Montreal and Almonte, Ontario, but the place she called “home” was the farm in Griffin. At her request, there is no service but family and friends will gather to celebrate her long and remarkable life at the internment of her ashes in the cemetery in her beloved Griffin. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to all those at Fairview Manor for their devotion and care of Louise during the many years she spent there. Donations in her memory can be made to the Almonte General Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of C. R. GAMBLE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL Inc. (127 Church Street, Almonte, ON. (613)256-3313) Condolences & Tributes: www.crgamble.com

LACKEY, John (Jack) Cecil - In loving memory of our dear Father and Grandfather who left us on January 30, 1994. He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast, He just went on quietly working, For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants were very few, And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there... a firm foundation Through all our storms of life, A helping hand to hold on to In times of stress and strife. We miss you more than ever... Your guidance and your love, But, we know you’re still watching Silently from above. And the love you gave still warms us, The way it always will. But leaving left an empty space That time can never fill. From heaven you’re still giving The love you always had. We know you hear us talk to you, We will always love you Dad. Always loved, remembered and sadly missed by his children and grandchildren

THE WORKSHOP DANCE STUDIO CHOREOGRAPHS ROUTINE FOR CHARITY Continued from page 1

ing the man behind Westerra Homes, Robert Noseworthy, and local media personality, Diana Fisher a.k.a. The Accidental Farmwife. The duo has been practicing their routine at The Workshop Dance Studio in Kemptville, choreographed by owner Nancy Morgan. Noseworthy and Fisher will be performing a tap routine to electro swing. "Electro swing is like the 2020 version of the roaring '20s," said Fisher. "It's faster, more modern, and there are a lot of remixes of old classics," said Morgan. "They take songs from the '20s, '30s and '40s and they just electrify them." Noseworthy has been taking the preparations quite seriously, banking overtime hours at the studio. "I've been taking every class available and Nancy's even allowed me to make up two extra classes," he said. "He has taken the Tuesday morning class, returned for the Tuesday evening class, and then we've done rehearsals, and he'll come back in for the Saturday class," said Morgan. "He's what you'd call a 'keener,'" Fisher laughed. "He showed up the first night with brand new tap shoes and dressed in a tux. He's a very good sport." "But she's the star of the show," Noseworthy replied. Noseworthy and Fisher decided to participate in the competition because it's a fun way to give back. "It'll at the very least be fun for the spectators, as they're going to be watching me," said Noseworthy. The Workshop Dance Studio will be hosting a showcase for the public to get a sneak peek of the dance routine on Feb. 24 from 2-4 p.m. Donations will be collected at the door and guests will be treated to wine and cheese, as well as a fun and easy line dancing class before the dance reveal. Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Diana Fisher and Robert Noseworthy have brought out their tap shoes for the Dancing Stars of Leeds and Grenville fundraiser for the Volunteer Centre of St. Lawrence - Rideau. www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/volunteer-centre-of-st-lawrence-rideau and select the team name from the drop-down menu. The public is invited to attend the event and select their favourite performance by casting their votes with loonies. A panel of judges, comprised of local celebrities that have previously danced in the competition, provides commentary throughout the evening. This year, the judges will be Lisa Free, Dave Jeggo, Stef Jones and Tina Murray. Once all of the dancers have performed, the voting containers will be weighed to determine the top three contenders based on entertainment value, choreography, and stage presence. Emcees for the evening are Bruce Wylie and Danielle Van Dyk. Tickets to the event will be available at Scotiabank at 7 King Street West in Brockville, with additional ticket providers to be determined.

AUTHOR CHARLOTTE GRAY STILL STANDS ON GUARD FOR CANADIAN HISTORY DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Author Charlotte Gray adjusts her microphone during her presentation to the Perth chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women's monthly meeting at the Perth Royal Canadian Legion on Monday, Jan. 21. intentionally chose not to include any of Canada's 23 prime ministers, because she did not want to have a "top-down" book, nor does it include any hockey stars among the nine Canadians she chose to profile. So she decided to play to her strengths as a biographer, and look at the men and women whose ideas best brought Canada together. "There is no single narrative" to define Canada, she said. But "federalism is the basic building block" of the country. One narrative that has been added to the national story is medicare, which was at first dismissed as that "Bolshevik innovation," she said. Another strand in the narrative is the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms from 1982, as is our geography, which she calls "crucial." Harper was chosen for inclusion because of his embodiment of the Canada's history with its Indigenous peoples, and especially for the image of him holding aloft an eagle feather on June 19, 1990 in the Manitoba legislature, as he said "no" and essentially ended the Meech Lake constitutional accord. LIVING CANADIANS Gray also interviewed living Canadians, like fellow author Margaret Atwood, who said that Canadian literature is now "a much more robust creature" than when she started out. "It's rather intimidating to interview Atwood," said Gray with a laugh, because of her "sharp

tongue" and keen perceptions. However, she was pleased to discover that "she was incredibly kind to me." Another personality she profiled was Manning, who, she said, "remains a very controversial figure." The Reform Party's slogan, "The West Wants In," was, she said, part of a larger Canadian tradition, especially out west, from the Farmers' Parties founded in Alberta and Ontario, to western-founded parties like the Social Credit Party and Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (now the NDP), which were part of "a determination to achieve more power at the grassroots," she said. But she hastened to add that, for the most part, these Canadian parties were populist in the best possible way, and "was not (the) ugly, racist, xenophobic" politics prevalent today, "like we are certainly seeing today in Europe and the U.S." When it came to dealing with living Canadians, "there is nothing a biographer loves more than making new friends among the living and the dead." She started out her writing life as a magazine writer, and so was used to writing 5,000-word profiles - though she did not want her book to be just a collection of profiles or essays. "There is a change of tone as I come to living individuals" in her book, she added, making it a more "contemporary conversation." Read more on line at www.insideottawavalley.com.

For a woman who loves history, author Charlotte Gray admits she can get "pretty depressed" when she realizes how little people know about Canada's history. Gray spoke to the Perth chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women laughed at the Royal Canadian Legion on Monday, Jan. 21, where she talked about her most recent book, The Promise of Canada: 150 Years of People and Ideas That Have Shaped Our Country. (Other books by Gray include Canada: A Portrait in Letters 1800-2000 (2004), and 2008's Extraordinary Canadians: Nellie McClung.) But her Canada 150 book was "my most challenging book," she said. But, at the same time, it is "the book of which I am the most proud." With Canada's 150th birthday in 2017, her publisher had asked her, "What're you going to do about it?" Attendees may have been tipped off by her accent, she joked, that she was not born in Canada, but Britain, and "the country I arrived in is not the country I live in" now. She has been spending the last four decades trying to understand her new country, wondering what many New Canadians wonder: "What holds this country together?" and "What does it mean to be Canadian?" She quoted fellow writer Robertson Davies' (1913-1995) quote that Canada may not be a country you love, but it is a country you worry about. In 1979, there was a "wobbly" self-view of Canada, as Quebec separation continued its march toward the 1980 referendum, and Canadian identity and culture was a bit of a question mark. Since then, political crises have come and gone, and there has since been a musical and literary explosion, with more inward and outward confidence, and the movement of people and power westward. Canada has "reimagined itself." But it has been a journey, from the Confederation conference in Charlottetown to the multicultural Canada of today, or, as Gray puts it, "How did we get from Charlottetown to Shad?" BY THE BOOK In her new book, Gray said she

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
