SWEETHEART BRUNCH BRINGS THE LOVE FEB. 10 PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Sunday, Feb. 10 will mark 21 years of celebrating community love, as the Knights of Columbus council 5333 host another North Grenville Community Sweetheart Brunch at the North Grenville Municipal Centre from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Every February, nearly 1,000 guests attend the Sweetheart Brunch for an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet put on entirely by volunteers. Money raised through ticket sales is paid back to the community, benefitting a number of local charities including the Kemptville District Hospital, Beth Donovan Hospice, Ryan's Well, Jumpstart, Kemptville and District Home Support, and many more. The event has raised more than $200,000 over the past 20 years. "We have a small army of over 100 volunteers, made up of members of Knights of Columbus and their families, members of Holy Cross Parish, youth from St. Mi-

chael Catholic High School and the Crossroads Youth group at Holy Cross, along with members of the local Scout troop," said Grand Knight Todd Fortin. Some of North Grenville's councillors and Mayor Nancy Peckford will be helping out this year, too. "From a small beginning in the parish hall at Holy Cross church, the event has grown to be one of the largest single day events in North Grenville," Fortin said. "We are extremely grateful to all the members of our community who continue to come forward offering their help, expertise and support." Through the course of the morning, musical entertainment will be provided by four different local groups playing blues, bluegrass, country, and rock n' roll. Look out for 'Harry's Carnations,' which will be sold in memory of the late Harry Pratt, and don't miss out on the cash draws throughout the day. See 21 YEARS, page 2

"This event could not be possible without the amazing support of the generous sponsors in our community," said Judy Littau, a member of the organizing committee. "A special thanks to the

business community in North Grenville as they have been a large part of the success of the brunch," said Fortin. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children from six to 11 years old, and children under six get in for free. Tickets can be

purchased at Brewed Awakenings, O'Farrell Financial, Royal LePage Team Realty or Scotiabank. They will also be available at the door. For more information, visit the North Grenville Community Sweetheart Brunch Facebook page.

HEALTH CENTRE OPENS AFTER-HOURS URGENT CARE CLINIC PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com A local health hub is doing its part to reduce pressure on hospital emergency departments. Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre is now offering afterhours urgent care services to registered patients on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The urgent care clinic is intended to address health issues that arise suddenly and cannot wait until regular office hours to be assessed. The urgent care services are also available in the evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. According to a recent report from Health Quality Ontario, the increase in visits to the emergency room is outpacing Ontario's population growth, causing emergency departments to be strained beyond their capacity to provide quality

care to each patient. In rural communities, the report states that it takes an average of 5.6 hours for patients to complete a visit to the emergency room, with an average wait time of 2.6 hours to see an emergency doctor. This issue has inspired the mandate for the Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre since day one, as well as their goal to reduce travel time for patients in rural communities like North Grenville by providing health care services close to home. Clinic director, Lisa LaCombePushee says the goal of the afterhours clinic is to reduce the number of unnecessary primary care visits to the emergency department. "Often, patients who are unable to get an appointment with their family physician in a timely man-

Submitted/Lisa Pushee The Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre's newest feature is an after-hours emergency clinic, which is now open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for patients at the centre. "This in turn increases costs to the health care system. Accessibility and doing our part to keep primary care where it belongs - in the family physician office - is key to

reducing these unnecessary costs." Patients of the urgent care clinic are generally served on a firstcome, first-served basis, however, the clinic does reserve the right to triage patients based on the medical condition that has been presented in order to ensure emergen-

cy issues are dealt with appropriately. Registered patients may also call the clinic on Saturday mornings and request a same-day time slot. In order to best serve those with urgent medical needs, patients who present with non-urgent medical concerns will be provided the next available appointment during regular weekday office hours. Although every effort will be made to accommodate patients as both walk-ins and on a same-day booking basis, the physician on duty will only be able to service a certain number of patients during the three-hour clinic. On occasion, patients will either be provided the next regular office appointment or they will be advised to attend the emergency department if necessary. Somerville Family Pharmacy, conveniently located in the waiting room of Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre, will also be open Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in addition to being open during regular clinic hours. To register as a new patient with a physician at Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre, call the office directly at 613-319-9988. For additional information about Somerville Family Pharmacy, contact the pharmacy directly at (613) 258 - 2800.

LOCAL WOMAN FUNDRAISES FOR MEDICAL AID TRIP TO KENYA PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Former St. Michael Catholic High School student, Mia Andrew, is in her second year as a pre-med student at the University of Ottawa with a lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. She's recently been accepted for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Mombosa, Kenya where she will learn from a hands-on experience volunteering alongside doctors as they provide medical assistance to those in need. Mia explained that Kenya has a deficient healthcare system and a high burden of communicable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. "Here, in Canada, I cannot even begin to fathom a society in which these treatable diseases are rampant, particularly afflicting young children and women," she said. "They

need our help." Andrew's two-month internship abroad will have her shadowing physicians in several departments, including the emergency/casualty ward, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine and comprehensive care clinics. "I hope that my experience will make me a better professional in the future, as experience is key to the medical field," she said. "I'll get to learn things in a setting that I couldn't get here, and I'm really excited to see medicine helping people firsthand, instead of only in the classroom." Andrew added that she is looking forward to learning about the culture in Kenya and meeting other interns from across the globe. "I think it's going to be an overall life-changing experience," she said. She has launched a Go Fund Me campaign to help her raise much-needed

Submitted/Mia Andrew North Grenville native and former St. Michael Catholic High School student, Mia Andrew, is now a second year biomed student at the University of Ottawa with plans to travel to Kenya in June. Andrew has started a Go Fund Me page to help her pay for her two-month stay abroad. funds to cover travel expenses for her trip. She has so far raised $1,245 of her $6,200 goal. "I can't remember a time in my life when I haven't wanted to save lives," she wrote on her Go Fund Me page. "The costs associated with this two-month missi-

on trip are too much for a university student, and I am humbly asking for your assistance and support." The not-for-profit organization hosting the internship, International Medical Aid, strives to improve access to medical and public health resourc-

es in the most impoverished areas in the world. This is accomplished through their fully staffed and strategically developed mobile health care campaign. The health care internships abroad are for undergrad students and practitioners to help in ar-

eas with the greatest need. Andrew's placement will be stationed at the Coast Provincial General Hospital; the second-largest public hospital in Kenya with 700 beds. It is also a teaching and referral facility serving the entire coastal region of Kenya with a population of approximately six million people. In addition to flight arrangements and housing, donations to Andrew's campaign will help pay for the full-scale mobile medical clinics, hygiene education programs for children, and training for educators to deliver basic lessons on CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and proper use of an AED (automated external defibrillator). Her trip is set for June 23 to Aug. 18 of this year. To learn more about Andrew or to help send her to Kenya, visit her Go Fund Me page here: www.gofundme.com/sendmiatokenya.

thing - that they're all small business owners, so they know what it's like to have something like this happen and lose a day of revenue." At the end of the day, Smith is just relieved that no one was hurt. "It could've been a lot worse, and the damage is quite minimal," she said. "Everybody is coming in to ask what happened and offer their assistance, but that's the norm in a town like this - everybody just pitches in, no questions asked." Smith said her landlords have also visited the shop since the burglary, and they told her it was the small community feel of North Grenville that prompted them to buy the building in the first place. Smith has been the owner of Brewed Awakenings for the last five years. The incident is still under investigation.

Early in the morning of Saturday, Feb. 2, before the coffee shop was set to open at 6 a.m., Brewed Awakenings in Kemptville was broken into and robbed. The culprit smashed the glass door and stole the entire cash register, containing a $250 cash float and $50 from ticket sales to the North Grenville Community Sweetheart Brunch. A collection of customers' active gift certificates was also stolen. OPP reported to the scene around 5:19 a.m. to investigate and Grahame's Bakery sent doughnuts over for the officers. Brewed Awakenings made a Facebook post that morning to announce their closure for the day, which received more than 100 shares and supportive comments.

Owner Kika Smith said the public's response to the incident reminded her that the supportive community she may have taken for granted always has her back. From replacing the cash register to boarding up the door, people in the community stepped forward to help and made the recovery that much easier, allowing the coffee shop to reopen the following morning. "There's definitely been an increase in business over the last few days," she said. "Especially on Sunday." On Sunday morning, the North Grenville Business Builders (NGBB) decided to show their support by having lunch at Brewed Awakenings. "There must have been 30 of them," said Smith. "It was so nice to see. When I thanked them for coming out, they all said the same

FEBRUARY FROST FEST RETURNS FEB. 17 2ND ANNUAL EVENT HOSTS FAMILY-FRIENDLY OUTDOOR FUN PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com After more than 1,200 people attended the inaugural February Frost Fest last year, the Friends of the Ferguson Forest Centre (FFFC) are organizing the second annual winter carnival to be held on Sunday, Feb. 17 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ferguson Tree Nursery in Kemptville. Chair of the FFFC, Liza Duhaime, says the event aims to bring families outdoors for fun and games while learning about the many unique features of the forest centre. "It raises awareness of the centre and the work that the FFFC does to promote it," she said. "Part of our mandate is to educate people about the location, and all of our events are geared towards pulling people in there who might not know that the forest centre exists or why it exists." Duhaime says the February Frost Fest fits in with the FFC's mandate focused on outdoor education and recreation. A dance party will kickoff the full-day schedule at 12 p.m., along with a bonfire where guests can roast marshmallows and keep

sponsors and volunteers. This year, the Kemptville Storm peewee girls' hockey team will be volunteering their time to help out, along with Erick LePors of DialA-Chef who will be managing the grill. The Friends of the Ferguson Forest Centre are still looking for as much help as they can get. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEART February is heart month. The Ottawa Heart Institute (OHI) was in Lanark County recently where they spoke to the Smiths Falls Rotary Club about how their donation of $25,000 will be used at their state-of-the-art facility. The Heart Institute's largest fundraising campaign of $83 million was launched in 2012. In this campaign, the Heart Institute is also raising $2 million for research. Today, the OHI is in the top three percentile of excellence in all research in the world, which includes cancer, Alzheimer's disease, or Parkinson's disease research, noted the foundation's vice president Brenda Rothwell. The second initiative is the Canada Women's Hearth Health Centre (CWHHC) - the first of which that has been established at the OHI. The whole idea of treating women's hearts, which are much smaller than men's hearts, has changed. Functionally, the woman's heart is much different. Arteries are smaller, and as a result there is a higher percentage of clogged arteries, blood clots and plaque blockages. The entire treatment of a women's heart has been altered and changed over the years, Rothwell noted. In the world, the CWHHC is the best in the world, and $4 million has been earmarked for this facility as well. "We are certainly fortunate to have a world class heart institute in our backyard," she said. Elizabeth Rodgers is the director of philanthropy of the foundation. The campaign was started to fund the new cardiac care tower, which was completed in April 2018. It provides an additional 145,000 square feet with six new operating rooms, and room for an additional 27 beds. "This is where your wonderful donations come in," Rodgers said. Every piece of equipment, like the robotic da Vinci, which can perform minimally invasive surgical procedures in the critical care tower, was purchased with community donations. "We are in the home stretch of this campaign, now more than ever donations are vital to purchasing the equipment we need. Your $25,000 gift will go directly to purchasing equipment for the new tower." Last year, 5,199 visits to the Heart Institute were from patients who live in the Smiths Falls/Rideau Lakes area. Over 53 per cent of them had diagnostic testing and 34 per cent experienced open-heart surgery and other life-saving procedures. From Leeds Grenville, there were 1,963 visits; 61 per cent for diagnostic testing and 39 per cent openheart and other surgery; and from Renfrew County, 4,904 visits last year; 63 per cent for diagnostic testing and 44 per cent for open-heart and other surgery. The donations received from the Ottawa Valley and beyond will touch someone's heart - literally.

Thanks, bingo players. They are responsible for the hefty donation from the Smiths Falls Rotary Club to the Ottawa Heart Institute (OHI). A $25,000 commitment was made Feb. 1 to the OHI which will be paid over five years in increments of $5,000 annually to 2022 the year the club turns 100 years of age. "I've been a patient of the Ottawa Heart Institute, so I really do appreciate the value of it and being so close," said Rotarian Ken Graham, as he thanked Brenda Rothwell, vice-president at the Heart Institute, and Elizabeth Rodgers, director of philanthropy. "I'm glad you had the statistics to show how much this community has drawn on the heart institute over the years," Graham said. Rodgers shared that there were 5,199 visits from the Smiths Falls and surrounding area in 2018; 53 per cent of them had diagnostic testing using equipment purchased with local donations, and another 34 per cent experienced open heart surgery and other life-saving procedures. Tom Foulkes, a Rotarian, shared his story of a recent procedure he had done at the Heart Institute. He had the TAVI procedure - a transcatheter aortic valve implant.

would require surgery. But because of the side effects with anesthesia, he qualified for the TAVI procedure. "I'm sort of awake, I could see the clock and they asked me if I was ready, and they bumped the heart rate up to 300 beats per minute, knocked the old valve out and put the new one in (created from a bovine valve), and it was essentially seamless." Foulkes came back to Smiths Falls to recover at the Van Horn Manor where he spent a few weeks before he went back to his home. "I just got word Wednesday at my checkup that I don't have to go back for another year," he said. Foulkes wasn't the only one in the room with ties to the Heart Institute. Ken Graham said he'd been a patient, and Dennis Staples said his brother was also a patient there. "They are here because your

LIVING LIFE AS A COUNTRY MOUSE DIANA FISHER MUSES ON CITY WORKING AND COUNTRY LIVING allows me to get up, put on my big-girl clothes and heels and head into a world of high-energy, high-stakes business - I love it, and to me, it's worth the drive. I get the best of both worlds: I enjoy the hustle of city life, but I get to go home to a peaceful existence on the farm. I live where many people would pay to vacation - on 200 acres of wilderness next to a creek, with privacy, quiet and fresh air. It is a long drive, but it really takes no longer than it does to cross the city in traffic. And to be honest, I never make the full drive myself; I leave that to someone else. Like many other Kemptville-area commuters, I leave the farm just after 6 in the morning on

DIANA FISHER Column

My day job is in the city. Many times I have been sitting in the lunchroom with coworkers when the topic of commuting comes up. Sometimes people are surprised to hear that I travel close to 150 kilometres round trip each day, just for work; well, there are a few reasons for that. First of all, there just aren't enough well-paying jobs in the small town where I live. Sure, I could work close to home, but I would never be able to save up for a rainy day, a vacation or retirement. Also, working in the city

weekdays, and drive into town 15 minutes away. From there, I hop on a shuttle that drops me within a block of my office at Albert and Bank in less than an hour. It's the only way to travel. If I miss the shuttle (it happens), I can drive in to Barrhaven and hop on an OC Transpo bus from the Park and Ride lot on Fallowfield. I have options - I don't have to drive all the way into the city core and pay an arm for parking, which is good because I am told there is a two-year waiting list for a parking spot within walking distance of my office. If it's really terrible weather and I don't even want to risk driving down my unplowed back road, I do have the option to work from home. That is something I couldn't have done a few years ago, before we gained access to "high speed" internet. I use the

term loosely, as it is still pretty slow; but it works, most of the time. Here are just a few of the things I love about living in the country: You can see the entire night sky in all its moonlit, starry glory without the dimming effect of light pollution. You can have a dog, and room for him to run. You can partake in forest and meadow walks every day, which is proven to be good for your physical, spiritual and mental health. In the country, you can hang your clothes to dry on a line outside. Yes, I know you can do this in the city too, but in the country your linens will capture the sweet scent of honeysuckle that you can fold up and place in the linen closet - and discover again when you shake the sheets out to put on the bed. Unless it's manurespreading day, or brush-

burning day: do not hang laundry on these days. In the country, you can run to the clothesline, the vegetable garden, even the mailbox, dressed in your nightgown or underwear ... or less. No one will see you, because you have no neighbours; and even if you do, they won't say anything. They are likely doing naked yoga or peeing off their back porch anyway, and they will respect your privacy too. If you do decide to garden naked, I recommend at least a mosquito netting suit, because, well, mosquitoes. There is no need to get tan lines when you live in the country. Skinny dip as

much as you like - but I do recommend a warning sign for surprise guests. Outside city limits, you can enjoy the peace and quiet that comes from living surrounded by nature. But you can also play your music loud without worrying about disturbing nearby residents. Just put a note in their mailbox and invite them to the party! Living "in God's country" is well worth the drive. This country mouse may look like a city mouse Monday to Friday, but don't be fooled: I had dialup just five years ago. NEW DOCTOR JOINS KEMPTVILLE HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTRE PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre has added a new doctor to their team. Dr. Barry Smith began practicing at the centre in January and has been keeping busy with new patients every day. He currently works as a primary care and emergency medicine physician. His areas of interest include comprehensive primary care, emergency medicine, and environmental health. Having grown up in a small town called Selkirk in rural Manitoba, Smith says the North Grenville community felt like a good fit. "Where I grew up is very much like Kemptville - lots of farmland," he said. "I like working in small towns. I like the people - it feels like home." After completing a bachelor of arts at the University of Winnipeg, Smith obtained his bachelor of

science and medical degree at the University of Manitoba. He then completed his family medicine and emergency medicine training at the University of Ottawa, and now resides in West Ottawa with his wife and two young children. Dr. Smith has ten years of experience in medical health care and even ran his own large-scale practice for a few years, but he would rather be involved with a smaller practice, which is why he ended up at the Kemptville Health and Wellness Centre. "I've worked all over - in busy community hospitals, rural hospitals, and I've always preferred working in rural clinics," he said, "and according to the ministry, this is an area in need of more doctors." Dr. Smith says the variety of specializations reflected by the physicians at the clinic is a plus, which enables the doctors to work together as a team.

OPINION

ILL-FATED SINGERS LIVE ON THROUGH THEIR MUSIC JEFF MAGUIRE REFLECTS ON THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED 60 YEARS AGO JEFF MAGUIRE Column

It was a terrible event that is immortalized in Don McLean's mournful 1971 song, American Pie. Because of the song Feb. 3, 1959 is now universally

known as "The Day the Music Died." This past weekend at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa concerts were staged to pay tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson Jr., better known as "The Big Bopper." The popular young singers died 60 years ago this past Sunday when the light aircraft hired to fly them to their next concert slammed into a snowy Iowa cornfield. Local pilot Roger Peterson, 21, also perished. Holly, 22, Valens (he was just 17) and Richardson, 28, were taking part in a gruelling tour of auditoriums and ball rooms across the American Mid-

west. Many people will remember Holly (his given name was Charles Hardin Holley - with an E) as the featured singer in front of a band called 'The Crickets'. Holly ended his association with the Crickets in the fall of 1958. Early in 1959 the prolific young songwriter from Lubbock, Texas decided to promote his growing music catalogue by joining what was called "The Winter Dance Party." The tour was scheduled to visit 24 communities in as many days but driving long distances on buses in mid-winter led to numerous problems. Prior to their show on Monday, Feb. 2 in Clear

Lake Holly chartered a light plane to fly him and two others from the tour to their next concert site in Minnesota. Through an odd chain of circumstances Valens and Richardson ended up being the other passengers. With Peterson at the controls the small plane departed from the airport in nearby Mason City at 12:55 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3. They didn't get far! The light plane plummeted to earth some six miles (9.7 kilometres) from the airport. When the aircraft failed to arrive at its destination a daylight aerial search was mounted. The wreckage was quickly located. All four occupants had died instantly.

Three young lives cut so tragically short! Yet their legacies live on in their truly incredible music. Buddy Holly's popular songs including Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Not Fade Away, Words of Love, That'll be the Day and Heartbeat have been covered by many artists including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Who can forget the contributions of Los Angelesborn, Mexican-American singer Ritchie Valens including La Bamba (also the title of a 1987 film about his life). Jiles Perry (J.P.) Richardson Jr. was a native of Port Arthur, Texas. He was a disc jockey in nearby Beaumont when he launched his second career as a singer-songwriter. It's his exaggerated, flirting phone call with a girlfriend in his biggest hit Chantilly Lace which immortalized the Big Bopper. There's no question it is Holly's music which continues to have the biggest impact. He recorded a huge catalogue of songs in

a very short time, a musical gift which continues to win him fans to this day. I was just six years old when he died. But later in life, as my musical interest grew, I became a big fan of Buddy Holly. We have several of his recordings on both vinyl and compact discs. One of them is a tribute CD which also includes Valens' and Richardson's biggest hits. I treasure that recording. My four-year-old granddaughter Lily has danced to those songs which to me emphasizes that the music did not die six decades ago this week in rural Iowa. The songs of those three talented entertainers live on and continue to make people happy to this day! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com.

FATHERS AND DAUGHTERS HAVE A BALL AT KEMPTVILLE DANCE IT'S THE SECOND ANNUAL FATHER-DAUGHTER BALL PUT ON BY THE KEMPTVILLE AREA FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Bonds between fathers and daughters are unbreakable, especially on the dance floor. Fathers and daughters rocked their best moves and outfits - at the Woodland Fairy Father-Daughter Ball put on by the Kemptville Area Family Resource Centre (KAFRC) at the North Grenville Municipal Centre on Saturday, Feb. 2. This is the second year the father-daughter dance has been held. When it began last year, the intention was to continue the event as an annual affair, said Carrie Van Allen, director of KAFRC, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting quality family pro-

grams and events to North Grenville and the surrounding area. "There's not a lot for dads to do with their daughters," she said. Van Allen said the dance is a great way to get dads and daughters out together for a fun time. Dads, uncles, grandpas and the little ladies in their lives dressed and danced to impress. In all, the event saw more than 124 people come through the door. "This is great," said dad Jason Kroeger, who came to the ball with his two-yearold daughter, Aurora Kroeger. The proceeds from the ball benefit the KAFRC. For more information on the KAFRC visit: http:// kafrc.weebly.com/.

February 5, 1931 – January 21, 2019 It is with great sadness that his family announce that David’s life ended at the Ottawa General Hospital at the age of 87 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s and chest problems leading to pneumonia. Present by his bedside were Betty, his wife of 61 years, his daughter Anna and her husband Richard Tjepkema who was playing a recording of David’s favourite poem, Rudyard Kipling’s “Gunga Din” at the moment of his passing. David was born in Southampton, England and joined the Royal Navy. He became a top photographer in the Fleet Air Arm, responsible for covering Royal visits and where his coverage of aircraft carrier take-offs and landings were shown to pilots and photographers in training. Posted to Scotland he met his future wife, a member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service. They returned to the south of England to be married and soon after the birth of their daughter Anna, they emigrated to Canada to be close to his older sister Gloria who greatly mourns his loss along with his English sisters Julia and Christine and brother Geoffrey. Other grieving family members include his daughter Debra, her two children Jennifer and Michael and Anna’s children Matthew and Rebecca who have both been of great help at this sad time. Rebecca has one child, Joseph; and Matthew has two young children, Jordan and Skye and takes care of the family cottage on Black Lake, near Perth where David and Betty retired until David’s health problems took them to the Perley Rideau Veterans Centre. During his time in Perth, David was an active member of the Kiwanis Club (President 1998-1999) as well as the Perth Royal Canadian legion. There will be a Memorial Service in the spring and a tree will be planted in his ashes at their cottage, and Betty’s too when the time comes, since they shared a great love of nature. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.

TURNER-PARKINSON Lili Violet

I regretfully announce the passing of Lili Violet Turner-Parkinson on January 30, 2019. Lili was the 3rd child of seven and was born in Carleton Place, Ontario in the summer of 1924. Her father Harold George Turner was a renowned owner of a blacksmith shop. He also was a Farrier Sergeant in the Canadian Horse Artillery in WWI. Her mother May Blanche Turner (Grove) was an active working mother. When Lili was about 3 years old, the family moved to North Bay, Ontario. Lili recounted happy memories of a big house, a lovely school, and her singing in choirs. Lili has fond memories of taking the train from North Bay to Carleton Place and walking to 24 Queen Street where her grandparents George and Maude Turner lived. She had lovely memories swimming in the Mississippi with her cousins and family. When Lili was 10 years old her family boarded the Empress of Britain ship to London, England where her parents took over a family business. Lili was 14 years old when she secured her first job as a book-keeper. The fear of the impending WWII, Lili’s family sailed to Jersey, Channel Islands and desperate times followed under 5 years of German occupation. Lili endured her teen life in fear as well as improving her education, her singing voice, and her tap dancing. She had many performances. Lili spoke of her life in Jersey with love. After the war, Lili and one of her sisters returned to London where they joined the Women’s Transport Services of Britain and the Field Ambulance Nursing Yeomanry. Lili continued her singing at Trinity College of Music winning a Scholarship. Lili said that her time there was a wonderful event of her life. Returning to Montreal with the same sister, Lili was 20 years old, and she chose a career in the legal secretarial field. Her family followed Lili returning to Canada in 1949. Marrying the wrong man, Lili and her husband moved to Sarnia, Ontario and had her son, Don-Roger Parkinson (1952) and her daughter, Holly Carol Parkinson (1959). Moving several times around Southern Ontario for the next 20 years, Lili finally divorced and enjoyed her children and her financially successful Legal Secretary/Law Clerk career until she retired when she was 62 years old. Lili, Don-Roger, and Holly were a happy threesome who travelled extensively. Lili’s children were well educated and earned their PhDs: Don-Roger in Chemistry and Holly Carol in Education. After retiring, Lili became a winner in Lawn Bowling around Southern and Western Ontario for the next 20 years. Lili was very athletic with poise and grace throughout her life which included tap dancing, aqua fit, skiing and walking until her knees gave out. Lili had beautiful big green eyes and lovely young skin. She sang all her life with her soprano voice in many choirs and volunteered with several church groups in the Anglican Diocese. Lili sewed, knitted, and embroidered throughout her life and was very proficient. Lili recently lost her dear son DonRoger Parkinson which resulted in breaking her heart. Lili is survived by her daughter, Holly Carol Parkinson who cared for her the last 10 years of her life. She will be greatly missed by friends and family who are still alive. Thank you to all the nurses and personal support workers who cared for Lili in the last years of her life. Thank you to Almonte Hospital who cared for Lili and Holly Carol the last 5 days of Lili’s life. Lili’s funeral, burial service and Tea Party to follow will take place in May 2019 at St James Anglican Church. Lili will then be buried at a Turner family plot in the St James Anglican Cemetery in Carleton Place, Ontario. Donations in memory of Lili Violet Turner-Parkinson are to be for St. James Anglican Church.

God’s Garden God looked around His garden And He found an empty place. He then looked down upon this earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine” It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. Love Ursela

Submitted/100 Women Who Care North Grenville photo 100 Women Who Care North Grenville kicks off its third year of giving back to the community Feb. 7 at the eQuinelle Golf Club.

100 WOMEN WHO CARE NORTH GRENVILLE SET TO KICK OFF 3RD YEAR 100 Women Who Care North Grenville is excited to be launching into their third year. Since its inception in 2017, this group of local women has raised more than $30,000 for local charities in North Grenville. The group continues to raise thousands of dollars each quarter, in a simple hour-long meeting, and hopes to double their contributions in 2019. Each individual member or group has committed to put forward $100 per quarter. At each meeting, three nominated charities present to the group, and at the end of the hour-long meeting, one is voted as the winning recipient. The next meeting of 100 Women Who Care North Grenville is scheduled for Feb. 7 at the eQuinelle Golf Club. Please come as a guest to see what it's all about.

The warmth of the membership is contagious and you will want to join in the amazing movement happening in North Grenville. Check out the 100 Women Who Care North Grenville event page on Facebook and tell them you're planning to attend the first quarter meeting on Feb. 7. Registration for new members begins at 5:30 p.m. in the large salon overlooking the scenic golf course. Order a cocktail and enjoy a wonderful hot meal sponsored by Natalie Castellas of Catered Affairs (by donation) and join in the conversation about the charities you would like to help out this quarter. 100 Women Who Care North Grenville has partnered with the Ottawa Community Foundation to streamline their dona-

tion process. Members can log on to the foundation's central website and enter "100 Women Who Care North Grenville" as the fund to receive their donation. This system automatically generates a tax receipt, making the whole operation that much easier. As of the last meeting, the 100 Women Who Care North Grenville was 110 ladies strong. The local chapter of this worldwide organization raised just over $12,000 for charity in its first year and more than $18,000 in its second year. The 100 Women Who Care North Grenville hopes to double their contributions in 2019. Join this fundraising force that has taken Kemptville by storm. There is also a local 100 Men Who Care and 100 Kids Who Care. If you would like to learn more about this important organization and what it is doing for local charities headquartered in your community, visit them on Facebook or at www.100womenwhocareng.com. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
