TERRY BUTLER HONOURED POSTHUMOUSLY Continued from page 1
The late Harry Pratt was a passionate volunteer, community builder, and leader in North Grenville. "This is a great honour, and as almost none of you will know, my mother, Joyce Graham, was a Pratt before she married my father," he said. "Harry Pratt, whenever he had the chance, used to tell my father or anyone that would listen that the smartest thing my father did was marry a Pratt." Graham, a Bishop's Mills resident, recently published a book about the untold history of the village, called Tales from the General Store. He thanked the municipality and the chamber of commerce, stating that the sign of a healthy community is when local organizations can work with the munici-
pality. He said he uses the 'ABC approach' to community resilience. "If we continue to act local, build relationships, and create and nurture the community, then we'll continue to make North Grenville the fantastic, thriving community that it has become for so many, whether you live in the bustling hub of Kemptville, or in the lovely and remote hamlets," he said.
Lifetime Ambassador Award Coun. John Barclay took the stage to present a new award: The Lifetime Ambassador Award, which recognizes a lifetime of leadership and promotion of the North Grenville community. "The purpose of the award is to celebrate and honour those individuals who, over their lifetime, have made substantial and

community." The inaugural recipient of the award is the late Terry Butler, who passed away in 2017. Butler first came to Kemptville as a Giant Tiger franchisee. After he sold the franchise, he and his wife Josie operated Butler's Victorian Pantry on Prescott Street. He was also a member of North Grenville council for 11 years, first elected in 2003. "He had such passion for our community - he was always kind and caring to people," said Barclay. "Terry was well respected, giving much time and energy and sheer hard work to our community." Projects in which Butler was involved include the Giving Garden at the Ferguson Forest Centre, the North Grenville Trails System, Anniversary Park in the Ferguson Forest Cen-

tre, and the establishment of the Ryan's Well replica well on the grounds of the Kemptville Campus. "Terry was always a huge ambassador for our amazing community," Barclay continued. "I'll always remember Terry for his absolute selfless commitment to encouraging business growth in Old Town Kemptville, his major role in revitalizing and beautifying the area, but also his passion about building community downtown." Butler's wife, Josie, accepted the award on his behalf. "Terry loved the North Grenville community and its people," she said. "Throughout his life, he served on many different charities, giving his time and energy to a variety of causes." Josie said Butler loved to serve people and found satisfaction in doing so at the council table. "It is my sincere privilege to accept this award on his behalf," she said.

BUSINESS
SHOWCASE HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Shopping local is on the rise. That's according to Anne Kotlarchuk, owner of ALK Event Management, the company that puts on the annual Shop Local Showcase, now in its fifth year. Kotlarchuk said this showcase is held to remind people that they can get most of what they need in their local community something more and more people are turning back to. "I do find people are supporting locally much more than they used to," she said. Kotlarchuk, who moved to Kemptville in 1991, said that she used to go to Ottawa once a month to shop. Now that's changed. "I can't remember the
last time I was in Ottawa," she said. Kotlarchuk said over 25 years ago, there weren't a ton of shopping options in Kemptville. That's changed. "There's a boom in business in the area," she said. Though despite businesses doing well, Kotlarchuk said she's a bit worried about online retailers like Amazon; the company makes it extremely easy to order products to your doorstep, which might discourage people from shopping from local businesses in their community. However, Kotlarchuk points out that there's still a major difference between online stores like Amazon and local companies: the unique offerings that support the local economy.
She pointed to products from companies like African Bronze Honey Company, a local social enterprise that sells honey produced in southern and eastern Africa to support beekeepers overseas; they also pump money back into projects that help save forests. "It's just something you're not going to find online," she said. Paul Whitney, managing director of the African Bronze Honey Company, and his wife, Liz Connell, the company's president, who live in Pelton's Corners got involved with the company five years ago after they came back from Zimbabwe, where they'd lived for eight years. Agency licensed facility in Ottawa right now, but are looking to relocate to a space in Kemptville to help with the company's expansion. Whitney said that with the advent of the internet, businesses can be more decentralized and it's no lon-
ger necessary to be in a large urban centre to export internationally. African Bronze Honey has expanded over the last five years and is now exporting to the U.S. and the Middle East thanks to local support from the Ottawa area. Bringing the company
to Kemptville will be a homecoming of sorts for the couple, who originally met at North Grenville District High School. Whitney said supporting the local businesses is extremely important. See UNIQUE, page 20

FERGUSON TREE NURSERY SUFFERS AS PROVINCE CANCELS 50 MILLION TREE PROGRAM NURSERY PREDICTS 40 PER CENT LOSS IN INCOME, 6-8 LOCAL JOBS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Kemptville's Ferguson Tree Nursery is facing some big challenges as a result of the province's recent decision to cancel funding for a tree planting program that aimed to plant 50 million trees in Ontario. Chief executive officer of the Ferguson Forest
Centre (FFC), Ed Patchell, says the loss of the 50 Million Tree Program will have a significant impact on the centre and many other growers and planters in the province, in addition to enormous negative economic and environmental impacts. "It is hard to imagine how a government could be so short-sighted, especially in the face of increasingly extreme weather-driven events such as the flooding that is happening now across much of Ontario, and beyond," he stated. See NURSERY, page 12
Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland The Ontario government's cancellation of the 50 Million Trees Program will cause the Ferguson Forest Centre to lose 40 per cent of the nursery's base income and six to eight local jobs.

HOLIDAY HORROR MOVIE FILMED IN MERRICKVILLE THIS SPRING PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com The quaint village of Merrickville will be the setting for a new full-length horror film about serial killings during the holidays. The Nights Before Christmas, which will serve as a sequel to 2017's Once Upon A Time at Christmas, is a story about two insane asylum escapees who conduct a series of murders during the 12 days of Christmas. As the movie's storyline on IMDb states, "they slaughter their way through their special naughty list, playing a cat and mouse game with the FBI and leaving a trail of bloody bodies in their wake." The film is being produced by Dystopian Films,
in association with Autonomy and NW9 Productions, directed by co-writer Paul Tanter. The murderous couple is played by Sayla de Goede (Watchmen, Seiren) as Mrs. Claus and the film's other co-writer, Simon Phillips, as Santa Claus. Phillips is a British actor, writer and producer who primarily works on independent British films. In acting, he is best known for the Jack trilogy (Jack Says, Jack Said and Jack Falls) and The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan feature films. You can find his profile on IMDb. The scene that was filmed in Merrickville on April 25 is a funeral scene, taking place in the Merrickville United Arts Centre
(MUAC), formerly known as the Merrickville United Church, at 100 St. Lawrence Street. Merrickville resident of 20 years, co-producer and playwright Doug Phillips (NW9 Productions) says the production has sourced as much local talent as possible. "We hired 30 local extras for the funeral scene and even rented our equipment locally," he said. "The village of Merrickville has been so helpful to work with - the municipality is filmfriendly, and the village always looks lovely in our productions." He said the company often films in Merrickville and surrounding communities such as Smiths Falls, where they've filmed at the

HOW TO PAINT A FARMHOUSE KITCHEN DIANA FISHER SHARES SOME OF HER TIPS
the Farmhouse Kitchen meals served with love - always open." Next I had to take some spray cleaner and an old rag to the top of the cupboards, where grease collects from cooking. I noticed the green construction paint peeking out around the edges of the faded peach-white. This room hadn't been painted since it was built during the Great Ice Storm of 1998. It was well past due for a refresher. We use this kitchen to serve an average 20 meals every Sunday - it takes a beating. The Farmer, God love him, cooks a bit like the Swedish Chef - with exuberance and enthusiasm, and the occasional fling of sauce, flour and spices. It's messy work. I found spaghetti on the ceiling and dried peas behind the fridge. He doesn't even like peas. I have no idea how they got there. When the Farmer came in I realized why he had groaned about the prospect of painting the kitchen. We had to take down two lights, a ceiling fan, curtain rods and a pot rack. Once the ceiling and walls were bare, I started taping the edge of every wall, door and cabinet. Then I went to the basement to get the bag of old dropsheets that used to belong to my father, the family painter. I remember when the pink-and-yellow striped bedsheets were on my bed, in our house on Johnston Road. I also remember being enlisted to help paint my own bedroom in the house that we built there. It was 1980 and
Patsy Gallant was singing Sugar Daddy on the radio. If I look carefully, I can still find the rose-beige paint on the sheets. I turned the radio on, found something peppy and retro, and started the 'cutting in.' Now I'm not going to say the Farmer is a messy painter - his work is pretty perfect, and streak-free. But I'm the Queen of the cutting in. I get right to the edge without going over. My trick of the trade is a little piece of card stock that I hold against the edge. I learned that from Dad. I also take all the coats out of the closet before I start, which is more than I can say for the man who now has a jacket with some semi-latex in a lovely shade of Provencal yellow on the elbow. The last thing to be painted over was the growth chart that had been etched into the wall between the kitchen and living room. One after one, each child and foster child that had spent time living here had stood against the wall and endured the measuring of height with a pencil tick to the wall over their tousled heads. The Farmer was silent as he read each name, height and date before erasing them with a few brush strokes. Painting is an opportunity to rearrange and redecorate. But when the final coat dried, just in time to set up for Easter dinner, we put everything back exactly as it was. For another 20 years, God willing. I woke up on Good Friday and had the sudden impulse to paint the kitchen. We had two full days to get it done before Easter Sunday, when better than 30 people would be filling the house for lunch. I didn't see the problem. The Farmer groaned, rolled over and went back to sleep. I went downstairs and started taking things off the kitchen walls. My husband, a child of the '60s, loves old knick knacks and especially things that remind him of his youth. That explains the collection of pastel-coloured ceramic plates and cups we have on the wall above our china cabinet. I think they once belonged to June Cleaver. I took them down, dusted them carefully and put them out in the sunroom for the duration of the paint operation. Next I climbed up on the kitchen counters and took down all of the collector's tins that I have displayed up there: a "Trump" cigar box (still holding the aroma of old stogies), a red and gold Extra Virgin olive oil tin from Italy, a chocolate tin from Barcelona (open it and you can still smell the cocoa) and a tin that once held Scottish shortbread cookies. I don't know why these things make me happy they just do. I'm not crazy about having a collection of old duck decoys on display in our dining area but I do live with a hunter. I also got the screwdriver out and took down the whiteboard where we write notes to each other, and the wooden sign that says "Welcome to

RED CROSS OFFERS HELP FOR FLOOD VICTIMS Recent heavy rains across the province have swollen lakes and rivers in several watersheds and resulted in water ponding and flooding on many properties. Flooded areas are causing citizens to sandbag against rising waters on some properties across Lanark Leeds Grenville. Lanark, Carleton Place, Beckwith and Drummond/ North Elmsley residents in particular, have been dealing with the effects of rising waters over the past week or so, and efforts to sandbag properties has been ongoing. If you are experiencing floods to your properties, please keep in mind some safety precautions for drinking water. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit offers some advice. Flood water and water ponding around wells and septic systems can have adverse effects on the safety of your drinking water and how your septic system works. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark Health Unit is advising those whose wells are directly affected by these conditions to boil their water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking the water. Have your well water tested for bacteria. If your septic system has been affected, limit water usage by taking quick showers rather than baths, avoid using the dishwasher, garbage disposal and washing machine and flush your toilets only when necessary. Ensure your basement sump pump is not going into the septic system. Do not pump out your septic tank when the soil around the tank or the leaching bed is still saturated with water. High ground water levels may cause an empty septic tank to float and break out of the ground, and damage the tank and connecting plumbing. Helpful tips: • Keep your family safe by keeping family members and pets away from and out of the flood water; • DO NOT enter areas where electrical systems have been affected by flood water as you may be electrocuted; • Building materials, clothing and furniture exposed to flood waters are likely contaminated with sewage and can support the growth of mould. • Ask for professional advice during clean up. The Red Cross is supporting relief operations in the Ottawa area and has launched an appeal for people impacted by the flooding. At the request of several municipalities, the Red Cross is providing a variety of services for affected households, on a case-by-base assessment basis of immediate needs. If you have been affected by flooding in Ontario, please call the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582, Monday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST.

"I'm very excited," she said. " This is a great opportunity and to be able to walk to it. It's awesome." As a gardener, Bates said the seed swap is a great place to ask questions and see things that she'd never come across otherwise. Seed saver Johvi Leeck, of Beyond the Garden Gate, said it's important to have events like this to promote heirloom plant varieties, which are more acclimatized to the local environment and could be lost if people don't continue to plant them. Leeck said if people don't continue to plant heirloom varieties, their genetic material will be lost. "When it's gone, it's gone," she said. "That's why I save seeds, so these varieties will continue to survive."

A seed swap has set down roots in Kemptville. The Kemptville Seed Swap, an inaugural Seedy Saturday, was held at the North Grenville Public Library on Saturday, April 27. "I'm really happy with the turnout," said Emily Kelly, one of the organizers behind the event. "If this works this year, we'll do it again and maybe host it earlier in the year." Kelly said this year's event came together fast and furiously. "I didn't know about seed swaps until a couple of months ago," she said. Kelly said she got interested in seed swaps through friends who participate in the Quinte West Seed Swap.
Another of the organizers, Susanne Larner, is no stranger to seed swaps and growing produce. "I have friends who are farmers and have been growing their own food," she said. "It's sort of in me." In the '90s Larner worked at a restaurant in Vancouver that also served as a seed swap location, where people from all over the world would exchange seeds. Helping to host a seed exchange was a natural segway. Larner said that she seeks out strange and interesting varieties of plants like green tomatoes as well as brown and black peppers - things you just don't find in grocery stores. Kemptville resident and gardener Mandie Bates was happy to have a seed swap so close to home.

LEADERSHIP IN BUSINESS CELEBRATED AT BREAKFAST BANQUET SALTASTIC, CATERED AFFAIRS, AMONG AWARD WINNERS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Local leaders in business were celebrated at the second annual North Grenville Breakfast Banquet Awards, held April 26 at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. The event was hosted by the Municipality of North Grenville and the North Grenville Chamber of Commerce. Eight awards were handed out during the event, including the new Lifetime Ambassador Award to the late Terry Butler and the Harry Pratt Ambassador Award to Tom Graham of TD Graham + Associates. Melissa White, chair of
the chamber, and Matt Gilmer, economic development officer with the municipality, were the hosts. The award for Innovative Business of the Year, recognizes businesses that introduce an idea, process, or initiative which has been proven to make a genuine difference or positive impact in the community. This year, it went to Anne Walsh of Art & Soul. Through her art therapy workshops, Walsh provides materials for self-expression, exploration, and problem-solving. "Her business is extremely innovative in North Grenville and has proven to make a genuine difference in our community," said White. She added that Walsh is bringing the issue of mental See EIGHT, page 11

$AVING$ COMMUNITY NOTICE Annual Vegetation Management Program CN is required to clear its rights-of-way from any vegetation that may pose a safety hazard. Vegetation on railway rights-of-way, if left uncontrolled, can contribute to trackside fires and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure.

As such, for safe railway operations, the annual vegetation control program will be carried out on CN rail lines in the province of Ontario. A certified applicator will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks (mainly the graveled area/ ballast). All product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments and municipal water supplies will be met. At this time, we expect that the program will take place from May 6, 2019 to July 12, 2019. Visit www.cn.ca/vegetation to see the list of cities as well as the updated schedule. health into light, leading the way to help people who are struggling with their work/life balance, and helping youth and adults through vulnerable times. Walsh also recently wrote a book called Out of the Mouths of Moms; a collection of stories on motherhood from moms of all walks of life. It will be released in May. Local caterer, Natalie Castellas of Catered Affairs, is North Grenville's Female Entrepreneur of the Year. She was on-site catering the Breakfast Banquet. "Natalie, in the past year,
has made a very difficult decision," said White, "grow her business and move its location, or stay where she was." Over ten years ago, Castellas began Catered Affairs within her garage at home by transforming it into an industrial kitchen. She took a risk earlier this year when she decided to move the company to the Kemptville College Campus, where it now operates out of the cafeteria building. The transition allowed the business to grow - with more space, staff, equipment, and improved efficiency in serving the community.
"I'm completely overwhelmed at how much this community has embraced all that we have to offer," said Castellas. "You've utilized Catered Affairs for many events and social gatherings, and we are proud to help out whenever we can." Catered Affairs serves buffets and packed student lunches for every school board in North Grenville, caters special events such as weddings and funerals, hosts meetings for businesses and community organizations, and more. The Male Entrepreneur of the Year award was presented to Rob McNamara of KrisAlis Inc. - a glass com-
pany he started in Prescott in 1992. KrisAlis specializes in glass for home, commercial and automotive purposes. They also offer auto accessories, window tinting, windshield and window replacements in addition to a wide variety of services. The company opened its Kemptville location in 1994, and now operates out of two locations in Kemptville and Winchester. Last year's Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Rebecca Cronk of Get Cronk'd Fitness Studio, was recognized this year with the Community Appreciation Award. Gilmer noted Cronk's efforts in hosting events focused on health, fitness, and body-positive mindsets for both men and women. "We're rolling into year three now, and I really cannot believe how supportive
...going the
the community has been," said Cronk. Get Cronk'd recently reopened its doors at 9 Clothier Street East after undergoing a significant expansion which increased their space by more than 2,000 square feet and brought in new equipment, as well as a new personal trainer. Karen Quigley of Saltastic halotherapy lounge won the New Business of the Year award. Quigley was also recognized by the Leeds Grenville Small Business Enterprise Centre with the Entrepreneur of the Year award last year. "When I started the business, I wasn't sure how the community was going to react to natural therapies," said Quigley. "The more we grow, the more we learn that the community is wonderful and very accepting of
new businesses." The Young Entrepreneur of the Year award went to Alexis Earl of First Stop Tool & Equipment Rentals. Earl's father, Neill, opened the business in the South Gower Industrial Park in 1994 when Earl was just two. They expanded and moved to their current location at 2678 Highway 43 in 1998. "When I was about seven years old, I was that kid swinging off the portacrane," Earl laughed, "And now I'm loading diesel fuel plate packers!" In November of 2017, Earl joined the North Grenville Business Builders and became more connected to the community. First Stop Rentals is currently undergoing another expansion and are offering more services.

NURSERY EXPECTS 40 PER CENT LOSS IN INCOME the release of the provincial budget. As a result, the Ferguson Forest Centre will lose 40 per cent of its revenue source, and Patchell says the centre will have to adapt its business model, diversify its product offerings, and make staffing changes. "Two things we built our reputation on was that we produce native or non-invasive species, and we go from local seed sources to ensure that they have the

Patchell added that the nursery's bareroot production, which was utilized primarily through the program, will be cut to 25 per cent of what it used to be. $50,000 to build their own seed storage facility, which Patchell said only solved the storage part of the problem, as they still don't have a processing space for the seeds. The Angus plant provided 90 per cent of the Ferguson Tree Nursery's seeds. Patchell said he is doubtful that the program cancellation will be rescinded by the current government. "It would be nice if they would at least come up with an alternative, because we still need to have trees planted," he said. "They're looking at all this flooding and saying they're going to have to start making changes for the climate, but then they go and cancel programs that would actually help to control the climate." The province has yet to provide an explanation for the decision to cut the funding, which was $4.5 million per year. "It may be a way for the government to save some money, but it's very shortsighted and it's going to cost us a lot more in the future," said Patchell. "In eastern Ontario, we're going to be planting so much less while we see more forests being destroyed." Patchell has sent a letter to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry through local MPP Steve Clark. A trending online petition to rescind the cancellation has collected more
THE ISSUE: ONTARIO CUTS FUNDING FOR 50 MILLION TREE PROGRAM LOCAL IMPACT: KEMPTVILLE'S FERGUSON TREE NURSERY WILL LOSE A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF ITS REVENUE AND FACE MANY NEW CHALLENGES AS A RESULT than 5,300 signatures, claiming the decision will result in significant job loss across the province, as well as the loss of many environmental benefits that forests provide. Employment generated by the 50 Million Tree program is equivalent to 103 full-time jobs per year, or more than 300 seasonal jobs. Forests Ontario, a notfor-profit charity, initiated the program in 2008. It has facilitated the planting of 2.3 million trees each year, to a total of more than 24 million trees over 14,800
STORY BEHIND THE STORY
The 50 Million Tree Program was initiated in 2008 and planted more than 24 million trees in Ontario. The Ferguson Tree Nursery provided about one million seedlings to the program each year. Now, about 40 per cent of the nursery's base income will disappear, in addition to six to eight local jobs.

hectares across Ontario over the past ten planting seasons. The plantings sequester 19,000 tonnes of carbon each year; the same amount of carbon that is emitted from driving more than 80 million kilometres. Forests Ontario chief executive officer Rob Keen said planting that many trees also helps clean the air and water, protect shorelines, and reduce erosion. "We certainly recognize that with climate change coming, it's going to be more important than ever to have healthy, contiguous, large forests to be able to mitigate climate change and certainly adapt to climate change," he said. Green party Leader Mike Schreiner said it's reckless to cut a program that helps prevent flooding. "It's clear that the premier does not believe that the new licence plate slogan 'A place to grow' applies to trees and forests," he said in a statement. "For them, Ontario is no longer a place to grow, but instead a place to get axed." The Ferguson Tree Nursery grows for reforestation, conservation authorities and private land owners.

PERSAUD, Dr. Bhisma Pitama
“Satnarine” It is with sadness the family announces the death, from an unexpected illness of Dr. B. P. Persaud (Sat), in Hospice Renfrew on Tuesday 23rd April. A proud graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. He practiced in Banbridge Northern Ireland, and Guyana before settling in Arnprior where for 50 years he cared for many generations of patients from first breath to last. For 17 years he was Director of Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew. Medicine was his life and priority. His ethics and kind commitment was inspirational to many. His relational with the nursing staff at the Arnprior Hospital was an excellent one. Especially the OR staff for when he cooked delicious food for special occasions, on days he was assisting. When away from his medicine he was found relaxing on the golf course working towards his eleventh hole in one. 10 holes in 1 was good but 11 would have been better. He was an avid reader and consummate artist. He enjoyed traveling to the Soviet Union and Scandinavia in the 70s, African Safaris, South American rain forest, as a member of Remote Area Medical Corp. to bring medicine to the indigenous people; Bali, Sepang and other parts of Asia. His family Danesh (Toronto), Devan and Mirko (Arnprior), Rohan and Etsuko, Ellie and George (Sydney Australia) Aran and Felicio, Sophie and Hannah (Seoul, South Korea) Thara and Graeme, Norah, Holly and Saoirse (Dublin Ireland). Must continue on their life’s journey without him. We would like to express our deep-felt gratitude to Dr. Neilson, the nurses and volunteers at the Hospice for the compassionate care they gave to our loved one during the last days of his life. Dr. Persaud’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation took place on Friday evening, April 26th from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday morning, April 27th from 9:45 to 10:45. HAWKINS, Ken – In loving memory of a special Dad and Grandpa who passed away May 3, 2001. The moment that you died, Our hearts split in two, One side filled with memories, The other died with you. We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, We do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. We love and miss you so much. Love, Sue , Heather, Rob, Lisa, Michele and families
God saw you getting weary And did what he thought best He put his arms around you And took you home to rest.

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland Rebecca Cronk, owner of Get Cronk'd Fitness Studio in Kemptville, settles into her newly expanded space at 9 Clothier Street East. The fitness studio more than doubled its size during the renovations. A grand reopening celebration will be held May 4. ground in kinesiology and health promotion to the studio. He obtained his honours in Bachelor of Health Sciences at Sheridan College, where he also discovered his love for weightlifting and strength training and conditioning. "Now we can fit more people per class and offer two services at the same time," said Cronk. "We've pretty much been able to double-book or triple-book the three of us at any point in time when we couldn't have done that before." The expansion also included the purchase of new workout equipment and machines. The new studio space is open concept, with a large personal training section at the front and a group class space at the back. The expansion entailed the removal of a non-structural dividing wall and a 'facelift' with new floor tiling and paint. "The response has been really great so far," said Rebecca's mother, Diane Cronk. "We had 350 kids come through the door during the Easter Bunny Hop." The studio hosted a bunnythemed obstacle course for kids to take part in and gave out treats during the
Old Town Kemptville BIA's event on April 13. Get Cronk'd offers personal training sessions as well as specialty classes for all ages, including five children's classes per week, 13 adult group training classes, two parent and baby classes, and two Fit for Life classes, designed for the active aging population. Cronk also offers training sessions for sports teams. Beginning on Friday, May 10, Cronk will be collaborating with Melanie Charlebois of Bodhi Tree Yoga Centre to offer regular Fitness and Yoga in the Park events, which will be group sessions held every Friday throughout the summer in Rotary Park, at the corner of Prescott Street and Clothier Street. The classes will run from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and participants are encouraged to go out for a group lunch afterwards. A grand reopening of Get Cronk'd Fitness Studio is set for Saturday, May 4 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 9 Clothier Street East. The public is welcome to attend. At this time last year, Rebecca Cronk was recognized with the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award at the North Grenville Breakfast Banquet for the success of her new business, Get Cronk'd Fitness Studio in Kemptville. This spring, along with her receipt of the Community Appreciation Award at the banquet on April 26, she will be celebrating the expansion of her studio after just two years. Previously occupying only the rear half of the building at 9 Clothier Street East, the studio has grown to more than double its space to over 2,000 square feet, including the storefront where new signage has recently been installed. Cronk said the studio had been operating at maximum capacity prior to the expansion. "We were at the point where all of our hours were booked with something, and the only way we could go further was if we were able to do a personal training session at the same time as a group class," she said. "We needed the extra space." Get Cronk'd offers group classes and personal training sessions from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Cronk and personal trainer Becky Langstaff were the only staff members at the studio until they welcomed a new staff member with the expansion, Fraser Lance. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Photo provided by OPP Grenville OPP helped reunite this dog with his owners after he was spotted taking a rest in the middle of Water Street.
POLICE RESCUE DOG FROM ROAD IN OXFORD MILLS The Grenville County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) respond to a numerous variety of calls for service. Sometimes, these calls involve the "man's best friend". On April 27, at approximately 3:30 p.m. officers responded to a report of a large dog lying in the middle of the road on Water street in Oxford Mills. Police say the dog appeared content and refused to move, thus causing vehicles to drive around him. Fortunately, police were able to persuade the uninjured dog to continue his apparent much needed rest in the back of the cruiser. Police located the dog's residence in the village of Oxford Mills. The dog had apparently escaped from a fenced backyard, when the owners were gone. The dog was happily reunited with his owners, but sadly missed by the officers.
