COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & APPLIED SCIENCE UWM is one of only two public universities in Wisconsin offering engineering degrees through the doctoral level. Our programs apply research excellence to high-demand focus areas, including energy, power and controls, advanced materials, transportation technologies, and advanced manufacturing. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella immigrated to the United States to attend UWM’s Computer Science master’s program, and it has been expanded with a new fully online option for 2020. The college leads on many other fronts, including hosting the only PhD program in Biomedical and Health Informatics in Wisconsin and the only dry lab for energy storage research of its kind in a North American university. SCHOOL OF FRESHWATER SCIENCES A pioneer in water-focused research, this is the largest institution of its kind on the Great Lakes, and a founding member of the new Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin. In addition to traditional PhD and MS programs, the school offers a non-thesis Professional Science Master's track with a 96% job placement success rate. COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES The largest college of its kind in the midwest includes top-ranked programs such as athletic training, biomedical sciences, communication sciences and disorders, health care administration and informatics, kinesiology, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
SCHOOL OF INFORMATION STUDIES A pioneer of online education, the school offers a PhD in Information Studies, a Master of Library and Information Science – ranked 14th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report – and an MS in Information Science and Technology. COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE This college is the home of the natural and social sciences, and the humanities. The school has the largest breadth of academic programs and scholarly research – more than 55 graduate and post-baccalaureate programs, including certificates, master’s and doctoral degrees, and joint interdisciplinary degrees. COLLEGE OF NURSING Wisconsin’s largest nursing school is consistently ranked in the top 15 percent of graduate nursing programs by U.S. News & World Report. Over $500,000 of funding is made available to nursing students annually. JOSEPH J. ZILBER SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH Wisconsin’s only nationally accredited public health school offers graduate education in five areas of study: biostatistics, community and behavioral health promotion, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, and public health policy and administration. Bright, highly motivated undergraduates with clear academic goals can start graduate work before completing their bachelor’s degrees. Graduate Student Excellence Fund The Graduate Student Excellence Fund was established in 2015 as a philanthropic effort to provide advanced degree students the support they need to pursue their research endeavors, complete their studies and share discoveries with others in their fields. ASSISTANTSHIPS
Approximately one quarter of the more than 4,600 UWM graduate students receive teaching, project or research assistantships from their program that cover their tuition, health care costs, provide a stipend and support their full-time studies. Students should contact their academic program for information on how to secure an assistantship. Assistantships are available for qualified graduate students and, based on the appointment, are considered employees in training. Various assistantships are available, including: • Teaching Assistantship: Teaching assistants gain professional
development in instruction while playing important roles in the learning experience of undergraduate students. A teaching assistant is an enrolled graduate student who is regularly assigned teaching and related responsibilities under the supervision of a faculty member. • Project Assistantship: Project assistants are assigned to conduct training, administrative responsibilities or other academic or academic support projects or programs – except regular preparation of instructional materials for courses or manual or clerical assignments – under the supervision of a member of the faculty or academic staff, primarily for the benefit of the university, faculty or academic staff supervisor or a granting agency. • Research Assistantship: Research assistants conduct research primarily for the benefit of the individual’s course of study and research, and directly applicable to the individual’s thesis or dissertation. Benefits: The benefits of appointment as an assistant (minimum 33 percent appointment) include: • Tuition remission (excludes student segregated fees) for 6-12 credits
per semester • Stipends commensurate with their academic level (TA and PA).

Appointments are made on a semester or academic year basis and may vary between 33 percent and 50 percent appointments. Graduate students (excluding dissertator status) must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits each semester. Positions do not include the Winterim semester. It is the policy of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents that all UW System campuses conduct criminal background checks on prospective employees for a university position. International Students • Positions are contingent upon maintaining your immigration status.
Appointment cannot commence until you have the appropriate visa category and an I-9 form is completed. • Appointment cannot exceed 50 percent of full time (20 hours per week) during the Spring and Fall semesters. • Appointments are contingent upon your demonstrated proficiency in English. International students must complete the UWM International TA Assessment and earn a minimum score of 36 to be eligible for any TA position or have earned a score of 23, or better on the speaking section of internet-based TOEFL (IBT), or a score of 7.0 or better on the speaking section of the IELTS. If the English diagnostic examination reveals that your language proficiency is not adequate for your work as a teaching assistant, you will be required to take a course in “Spoken English for Academic Purposes.”
SCHOLARSHIPS Although most scholarship opportunities for graduate students come in the form of fellowships, assistantships, and tuition waivers, we encourage all students to apply for scholarships. Numerous scholarship opportunities are available through the Department of Financial Aid, Student Employment and Military Education Benefits and academic departments at UWM, as well as private scholarship sources. STUDENT LOANS Milwaukee is considered a top destination for the money-savvy college graduate or graduate student. Affordability is a hallmark of our educational opportunities as a Midwestern public research university, and we encourage students to apply for loans, financial aid and assistantships to ease the burden of paying for a graduate education. It’s a worthwhile investment, and loans can help you focus on what really matters – academics – during your time at UWM. GRADUATE STUDENT FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY All original financial aid offers assume enrollment in eight or more credits per semester. Domestic graduate students enrolling in less than eight credits need to inform the Financial Aid Office of the number of credits they plan to take. Graduate students must take at least four graduatelevel credits to qualify for aid. However, if you are taking undergraduate coursework that applies to your graduate program, you may be eligible for graduate loan limits as long as you are enrolled at least half-time (four credits) – verified by your academic advisor in a letter. Graduate students will be evaluated for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans only. Non-degree Students Students who are not accepted into a degree-granting program are classified as non-degree students and are not generally eligible for financial aid. Exceptions can be made for those enrolled in eligible certification programs or those taking prerequisite courses for admission to a UWM degree or certification program. In those cases, students must document eligibility on a Non-Degree Student Verification form and have the form submitted to the Financial Aid Office as early as possible. Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) All students are expected to be making satisfactory academic progress (SAP) toward a degree to be eligible for financial aid. SAP consists of two components of measurement: qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative measure is established by the performance standards of the school or college in which the student is enrolled. The quantitative measures consists of “pace” and “timeframe.” Graduate students need to complete at least 50 percent of all attempted credits to meet the pace requirement. To meet the timeframe requirement, graduate students cannot attempt more than 200 percent of the number of credits required for the degree.
Funds are limited, and the earlier you apply for financial aid, the more you could potentially save.

Dual admission permits part-time academic study in addition to part-time English language instruction.
