SOURCES OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Paying for college typically involves three sources: → Work: Many students work during the school year and over the summer to assist with weekly expenses and paying for books. → Individual contribution: Most students and parents pay part of the cost, depending on circumstances. → Financial aid: To be considered for most types of financial aid (including scholarships), students need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Don’t procrastinate! File as soon as Oct. 1 to be given maximum consideration. fafsa.gov
TYPES OF AID
→ Scholarships: We encourage all students to apply for scholarships. uwm.edu/scholarships → Grants: A grant is generally based on financial need and does not have to be repaid. → Student loans: These funds must be repaid. → Work-study: A program providing employment opportunities to students demonstrating financial need.
DETERMINING YOUR COSTS
There are online tools available to remove some of the guesswork and stress from determining college costs. Our financial aid advisors recommend the resources below. → Estimated Cost of Attendance and UWM Total Cost Estimator The COA lists allowable costs that will be used in determining your budget if you apply for financial aid. The Total Cost Estimator can help you calculate whether you have enough financial aid to cover tuition and fees or if you will need to use other funding sources. Learn more at coa.uwm.edu. → One-Stop Enrollment and Financial Services Although the Bursar’s Office and Financial Aid Department do very different things, everything related to finance can be found under the finances section at uwm.edu/onestop. → University Housing Review rates for housing options and meal plans for the main campus at uwm.edu/housing. This is not applicable to UWM at Washington County or UWM at Waukesha.

Research and apply for scholarships. Go to uwm.edu/scholarships for tips and resources, and follow facebook.com/uwmscholarships to get the latest scholarship news.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming academic year at fafsa.gov. It’s free, and all students are encouraged to apply. For the 2021-22 academic year, use 2019 tax information. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is an additional resource to make the process easier. For security purposes, all income information imported from the IRS is masked and available only to the Financial Aid Office. Funds are limited, so apply as soon as Oct. 1 to receive maximum consideration. You (and a parent, if you are dependent) must have an FSA ID, which can be created at fsaid.ed.gov. You must be accepted for admission before we will import the results of your FAFSA.

Watch your email inbox for important communications from us. If you’re selected for verification, you’ll need to submit additional documentation. We’ll send you the details via email and your PAWS To-Do List. The sooner you turn in any missing documents, the sooner we can determine your eligibility.
JUNE
Financial aid eligibility for new students will begin to be determined. Check your email for notification about your financial aid package. The email includes important information and asks you to review your award on your PAWS account in order to accept or decline all financial aid offered. You will also be asked to read the Financial Aid Handbook. If you are accepting any loans, you will need to complete all necessary promissory notes and entrance loan counseling requirements. Details will be provided when you are offered aid and will be reflected in your To-Do List. Finalize your financing plan. Although final tuition and fee charges aren’t typically reflected on a bill until late July, you should be able to determine if you need to consider additional funding options. Even though the vast majority of students qualify for financial aid, many also need to consider Parent PLUS and private alternative loans. Financial aid is offered annually. Make sure you are considering your costs for the entire year. Check out our UWM Total Cost Estimator: uwm.edu/costestimator. Apply for Parent PLUS or private alternative loans if needed.
