Who We Are The Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) is a volunteer organization dedicated to raising funds for—and awareness of—Kennedy Krieger Institute by promoting and facilitating volunteerism that assists children and families served by the Institute. WIN was created in 2009 as a women’s auxiliary group to support Kennedy Krieger. The organization has grown to become a driving force for fundraising and volunteering at the Institute, providing tremendous resources to support the needs of Kennedy Krieger and offering hands-on support to the Institute’s patients, students and families.

What We Do Since its inception, WIN has raised more than $1.6 million to advance the mission of Kennedy Krieger, which is: To transform the lives of children with disorders of the brain through groundbreaking research, innovative treatments and life-changing education. Specializing in treating a wide range of neurological disorders, from the most common (such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) to the extremely rare (like the various types of leukodystrophy), Kennedy Krieger helps children and families from all over Maryland, across the country and around the world. Annually, the Institute serves 25,000 patients and students through its inpatient hospital, outpatient clinics, community programs and schools. WIN has become an important partner in funding the specific needs of the Institute. Through a number of fundraising events, many of them held annually, WIN has funded research projects, adaptive vehicles for transporting patients, important rehabilitation equipment, building renovations and more. WIN’s events are not only inspiring, but also a way to convey Kennedy Krieger’s message of hope and healing through groundbreaking research, education and care to a broad audience of women, corporations and the philanthropically minded.

Guests enjoy expertly prepared cuisine, specialty cocktails, dancing, and silent and live auctions. • Wine Walkabout: Held each fall, this special event brings together fine wine sampling, an exciting array of culinary delights and intriguing raffle prizes. Each event typically raises money for a specific program, clinic or research project at Kennedy Krieger.

A Chance to Give Back For the children and families of Kennedy Krieger, small acts of kindness can make all the difference. That’s why WIN volunteers are dedicated to making a positive impact on the families and children served by Kennedy Krieger. WIN is about acknowledging and responding to basic needs so children and families can focus on hugs and healing. It’s about using personal outreach to make a positive impact on the many families Kennedy Krieger serves. It’s about people helping people. Opportunities to help include: • Inpatient dinners: A few times a year, WIN members and their families prepare and serve dinner at Kennedy Krieger for families with children staying at the Institute’s inpatient hospital. It’s a great way to meet the families and give them a chance to relax outside of the hospital routine. • WIN Wednesdays: WIN members volunteer in Kennedy Krieger’s Child Life and Therapeutic Recreation playroom to help children complete craft projects and play games between therapy sessions. The children enjoy the extra attention from volunteers, and the staff members greatly appreciate the help. This is a wonderful opportunity to work directly with the amazing children at Kennedy Krieger! • Welcome bags: WIN members come together to prepare welcome bags for families of children beginning their stay at the Institute’s inpatient hospital. Many families travel from out of state or abroad to receive treatment at the Institute, and this personal welcome gift can go a long way toward helping them feel at home at Kennedy Krieger, and making their stay in Baltimore a positive one.

Exponential Impact “WIN has not only allowed me to learn more about the extraordinary services provided at Kennedy Krieger, but also exposed me to a diverse and inspiring group of women. WIN creates the perfect synergy to raise support, and we have a lot of fun doing it!” – Aimee Fulchino, WIN co-president

“WIN has been a wonderful asset to the Child Life and Therapeutic Recreation Department. The WIN volunteers not only donate their time and energy; they also bring enthusiasm, smiles and support to our patients. We love seeing the WIN members interact with our patients and provide the encouragement and assistance that each child needs to accomplish and participate in a recreation activity.” – Kelly Marcue, child life specialist

“I have met the most amazing people at Kennedy Krieger and WIN. The staff and patients in the therapy room (and beyond) at the Institute have taught me so much about having fun while working toward individual goals for each patient. The patients are incredible and inspiring. They are funny, smart, creative and strong. I feel fortunate to be able to spend time with them.” – Sara Orthwein, WIN member

WIN for Kennedy Krieger Institute One in six children in the U.S. has a brain disorder, disease or injury. That’s more than 12 million kids. Kennedy Krieger serves those children through research, clinical trials, special education and exceptional, interdisciplinary patient care. The Women’s Initiative Network supports that work through passionate volunteerism and unique fundraising events. We invite you to learn more about what we do!
