This narrative report presents the findings of a survey conducted to gather insights into public transportation habits, payment preferences, and the potential adoption of Near Field Communication (NFC) cards for fare payments. The survey involved 50 respondents and aimed to understand their demographics, frequency of public transportation usage, current payment methods, concerns with traditional cash payments, and their views on NFC cards as a convenient payment solution.

In response to the growing need for more convenient and secure payment methods in transportation fare systems, a survey was conducted to gather insights from drivers regarding a proposed product—an NFC-based smart card for fare payment. The survey aimed to identify the common problems drivers face with traditional payment methods, determine their willingness to invest in accepting contactless payments, and understand their primary concerns about adopting such a system.
The survey was distributed to a sample of drivers operating in various transportation sectors, including taxis, buses, and rideshare services. A total of 100 drivers participated in the survey, providing valuable feedback that forms the basis of this report.
WILLINGNESS TO INVEST IN CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS
When asked if they would be willing to invest in the necessary equipment to accept contactless payments, an encouraging 66.7% of drivers responded positively. This indicates a strong interest in adopting more modern payment methods, acknowledging the potential benefits they offer. However, it’s worth noting that 33.3% of respondents expressed their hesitancy to invest, potentially due to factors such as cost, perceived complexity, or concerns about technology integration. CHALLENGES OF TRADITIONAL TRANSPORTATION PAYMENT METHODS
The responses indicated several key issues when asked about the common problems encountered when using the traditional method of paying transportation fares (i.e., cash or coins). The highest percentage, 83.3%, cited the inconvenience of collecting cash and giving exact change as a significant problem. This highlights the time-consuming nature of cash transactions, which can result in delays and frustration for drivers and passengers. Additionally, 33.3% of respondents mentioned difficulty reconciling payments, suggesting a potential source of financial discrepancies. 10.7% expressed concerns about the security risks associated with carrying cash while driving, emphasizing the need for safer alternatives. Lastly, 6% expressed concerns regarding hygiene and contact with germs during payment.
The survey findings indicate a clear demand for improved payment methods among drivers, with the majority expressing dissatisfaction with traditional cash transactions. The willingness of 66.7% of drivers to invest in accepting contactless payments demonstrates their openness to adopting new technologies that offer convenience and efficiency. However, concerns about security risks, system operation, payment reconciliation, and transaction fees need to be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of an NFC-based smart card for fare payment. This survey provides valuable insights that can guide the development of a robust, user-friendly, and secure system that meets the needs of both drivers and passengers, paving the way for a more seamless transportation experience.

The contemporary problems faced by the society grow as the population increases, and we highly believe that these challenges could not be efficiently solved in any way but with the use of technology. Among the problems that can be solved using smart city technologies are the issues faced by the transportation sector, and the integration of technology in solving transportation challenges leads to so-called smart transportation.
Public transportation in the Philippines is a complex and diverse system that serves millions of Filipinos daily. The most common modes of public transportation are jeepneys, buses, tricycles, taxis, and motorcycle taxis. According to a survey on the automotive industry in the Philippines in 2022, approximately 42 percent of respondents used public transportation. While most people use public transportation as a mode of transportation, it comes with different problems. Commuters often face various problems when they use public transportation which include the following: the need to carry cash or coins to pay for the fare, which can be inconvenient, unsafe or insufficient; the need to buy or recharge a specific card or ticket for each mode of transportation, which can be costly, time-consuming or confusing; the risk of losing or forgetting the card or ticket, which can result in fines, delays or denial of service; and the lack of transparency and accuracy in the fare calculation and payment process, which can lead to overcharging, undercharging or disputes.
Leveraging Technology for the Better
A technology that can solve these issues is near-field communication (NFC). NFC is a wireless technology that allows devices to exchange data over short distances. NFC in transportation is a convenient and secure way to pay for public transit services. NFC-enabled devices can be used as digital wallets to store and access transit passes, tickets, or fares. By simply tapping the device on a reader at the station or on board the vehicle, the payment is processed and verified in seconds. Payment via NFC in transportation can improve the experience and satisfaction of the commuters, as well as the efficiency and profitability of the transportation providers. It can also reduce the environmental impact of transportation by eliminating the need for paper or plastic cards or tickets.
NFC as the Promising Potential Solution?
The use of NFC for transportation payment is not new. One example of NFC in Philippine transportation is the Beep card, which is a prepaid contactless card that can be used on Metro Manila’s elevated railways, buses, and public utility vehicles. Users can top up their Beep cards using their NFC-enabled smartphones or at designated kiosks. Beep cards can reduce queueing time, prevent fraud and enable seamless transfers between different modes of transport. Although the Beep card is used for elevated railways in Metro Manila, the contactless payment method is not fully embraced in other modes of transportation. Also, while it is widely used in Metro Manila transportation systems, there is little to no penetration of NFC-based payment in the regional transportation systems.
ALITAPTAP: AN NFC-BASED PERSONAL TRANSIT WALLET
With this, we propose aliTapTap, a contactless payment system using near-field communication for transportation transaction purposes. aliTapTap is a contactless payment system that can be used for public transportation in the Philippines. It is powered by NFC technology and can be loaded with cash or credit at various terminals or kiosks. The system makes use of a reloadable contactless smart card. We see aliTapTap being available as a smart card and mobile application for NFC-enabled smartphones. By just tapping their cards or NFC-equipped smartphones, commuters can now pay their transportation fares without the hassles of traditional payment methods. aliTapTap users can reload their respective accounts not only via card but also via e-cash through their smartphones, allowing for more flexible and seamless transactions. Using aliTapTap, public transportation commuters or the public transportation system in general, are benefited in the following ways: it reduces the need for cash, coins, or physical tickets, which can be lost, stolen, or damaged; it speeds up the boarding process and reduces congestion at the gates or fareboxes, improving the efficiency and reliability of transit services; it enables contactless and hygienic transactions, reducing the risk of spreading germs or viruses; it offers more flexibility and convenience for travelers, who can use their preferred device or payment method, and easily switch between different modes of transport; it provides more information and transparency for travelers, who can check their balance, transaction history, or travel history on their device or online; and it supports smart city initiatives and environmental sustainability, by reducing paper waste and enabling data collection and analysis for better planning and management of transit systems.
