STUDLEY PARK BOATHOUSE

Form | Function seek balance between form and function During the design process of the studley boathouse, the idea of forms was the main concern. The variation of form is what I wanted to experiment in this project. I created the boathouse with simple regulation of form: Addition and Subtraction.

Columns | Openness | Function the use of columns enhances openess and function Adopting the architectural style of Master Richard Meier, the boathouse design used a certain amount of evenly spaced columns. The structural columns made high roof without large proportion of structural walls possible. And hence functioning the openness of the boathouse

Circulation | Accessibility maximize the usability of the building By the meaning of openness, the design of boathouse consists of various pathways of circulation. Both internal and external staircases are available for the users to access each level freely. Multiple pathways in a single corridor also provide convenience for the stakeholders.

Space | Function reasonable spatial arrangement In arranging the space of the building, I chose to reserve the brightest area for the restaurant and cafe, and keep the offices at ground level for their function. Large spacing and high ceiling provide relax and energetic feelings for the customer, and the outdoor space at second level facilitates the cafe customer to have a leisure drink alongside the river.

Princes Freeway Installation

Princes Freeway | Junction the urban fringe It is the major road for transportation between the City of Melbourne and other suburban areas in Melbourne. This installation mainly aimed to impress visitors from different areas and provide them with various experiences when entering and leaving the Metropolis.

Experience | Pathway experience the differences between each path In order to give drivers diverse impressions when approaching and leaving Melbourne Metropolis, the installation is in an irregular form locating at the Princes Highway. Various pathways are sitting besides Princes Highway available to drivers’. Drivers would be able to enjoy unique experience when taking different roads.

Illusion | Experience create different experiences by visual illusion When driving through a place with high speed, drivers may not remember what was on the side of the roads. This extra large scale object provides a longer time for drivers to experience the features of the installation. By using boolean pattern and arbitrary point, I successfully created a visual illusion. When drivers drive in high speed, they might be able to see an illusion of the structure moving. Arbitrary point

Boolean pattern

Light | Illusion create illusion with light How to create visual illusion effect to the drivers? The double layered facade is the answer. Since the boolean pattern lies on the surface of the duo layer, when a high speed car moves alongside the structure, drivers will see the boolean patterns on different layer alternately. In this case, the whole structure will look like an moving object. And hence, the irregular shape of the installation facilitates the different experiences in different paths.

Barlow Motor Car Showroom

and Carpark

Site | The City reshape the city we live The site for Barlow Motor Car showroom and car park is located in the commercial area of Melbourne City. Surrounding the site, buildings are usually commercial use mixed with residential. While the car showroom and car park will also be located in a commercial building, my main focus is to make the project more special: less commercial, and more residential- and pedestrian-friendly.

Commercial | Leisure apart from business From the site analysis, it could be seen that there is a lack of leisure spots such as cafĂŠs. Thus I wanted to create a hub for pedestrians and business professionals in the area to grab a coffee in their busy schedule. Moreover, the large public space in the showroom also enables pedestrians to unwind after work by walking in the mall-like design.

Movement | Human | Vehicle the interaction between people and car The main purpose of a car showroom is to display new cars for users. I aimed to go beyond that purpose with this project. Given that non-moving cars usually give a feeling of lifelessness in showrooms, I have incorporated a transparent area in the center part of the building to add innovations in this design. The glass panels enable viewers in the showroom to see actual car movement in the car park. It connects the viewers with ‘living’ cars, and gives them an unique experience in the showroom.
