How to Use Speed Picking Techniques for Heavy Metal Guitar -Learn To Play The Guitar For guitar players wanting to bulk up their playing style, there are several popular ways to do speed picking, also known as "shredding" in modern electric guitar language. Here are some great speed picking techniques.

•

1 Do legato techniques. Legato (means "tied together" in Italian) is when you use plucking methods to get multiple notes out of one string, and it makes your note play really, really fast.

• 2 Use "double picking" or "tremolo picking." These techniques are similar; you stay on one note and pick the heck out of it. Tremolo picking got its name because when you pick fast enough, it gives your note a wavering tremolo sound.

• 3 Use rakes and sweeps. Another thing some enterprising electric guitar players figured out is that if you hold your fretted notes on multiple strings and "sweep" the pick across those strings, you get a fast series of notes. Sweep picking is great for arpeggios or other note collections that you want to sound quick, but not played together as a chord.

• 4 Try tapping. Tapping is another way to speed pick or get your note play fast. In this technique, you hold fretted notes and stab the fretboard on high frets with your right fingers. If you amp is set up right, you'll get a good quick sound.

• 5 Do speed finger picking. If you use multiple fingers on a string, you can pick many notes per second, enhancing your speed picking game.
