At first, learning guitar can be daunting, but by learning to read guitar tabs and play power chords, you'll soon be on your way to playing your favorite songs.
Reading Tabs • An important ability for the guitar player is reading guitar tabs. Tabs are abundant online, and an Internet search will bring up tabs for many popular songs. Guitar tabs are written from left to right, with six lines labeled E, A, D, G, B and E from bottom to top. These correspond to the six strings on the guitar from top to bottom. Numbers appear on each line to tell you which fret to put your fingers on, and 0 means you leave the string open. There is no conventional way to notate rhythm on tabs, so it's best to use the tab for the notes and play along with the recording to master the rhythm.
Power Chords • Power chords are the foundation of rock music. They are easy to learn, and they can be played at any point on the neck while making the same shape with your fingers. The chords can start on either the E string at the top of the neck, or the A string immediately below. Place your pointer finger on either of these strings at any fret. This is the root note of the power chord. Place your ring finger one string lower and two frets down the neck and your pinkie one string lower on the same fret as your ring finger. Now you're ready to start rocking.
