History of Tacos El Rey Tacos El Rey was opened in 1982 by Benjamin and Manuela Rodriguez. Bennie, as most people know him, was born in Monclova Coahuila, Mexico and came to the US in 1954 with his family’s recipes and a dream. Bennie once said “If you have ambitions to do something in this life, you do it. Here in America, there are all kinds of opportunities out there. You’ve got to go looking for them.” With his ambitions, Bennie, a 25 year veteran of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad decided he wanted to pursue his American dream further and start a business of his own. Bennie was no stranger to the restaurant business; his parents operated a restaurant in his home town in Mexico. Working with his mother for long hours at a time he learned the best food is homemade food. A belief and tradition we use to this day.

A lot has changed since that October day in 1982 when Bennie and Mela first opened the doors. The building has been expanded, a Racine location has opened, and menu items have been added. Still, there are two things that will never change at Tacos El Rey, family and fantastic homemade food. Family means a lot to the folks at Tacos El Rey, Bennie and Mela are now retired but the restaurant is still run by the 2nd & 3rd generations, Bennie’s daughter and Grandson who still carry on the ideals and traditions first started almost 25 years ago, But don’t be surprised if Bennie and Mela visit from Texas and brave the cold of Wisconsin to pop in and say “Hello” to customers of old and new.
