THOMAS SCOON Northwood, New Hampshire

Thomas Scoon’s twenty-five years of artistic practice has been mostly marked by perseverance and solitude. Working alone in Northwood, New Hampshire in a studio he built from foundation to furnace with his own two hands, Tom has become the embodiment of a Maker. His life has become his work and the success that has come with this commitment has further cemented this dynamic. Tom has said that he doesn’t know what he would do if he didn’t have the work. It defines the contours of his day, adds rigor and pace to his schedule, works his mind and certainly his body. His life long contemplation of the figure has given depth and meaning to his artistic journey. As museums and institutions around the world celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Studio Glass Movement I am especially proud to present one of the movement’s most original voices in his fifth one-person exhibition at the gallery. I BELIEVE the figures are universal in that they speak directly to what

is elemental rather than superficial about us and our relationships to others. These qualities of spirit are nearly indefinable, of what we share in our immediate lives as well as through a common human history but it is what I want to capture in some small measure. - Thomas Scoon
