Kent Place School 1
Message from the Chair of the Board Dear Kent Place Community, I mentioned to my fellow Trustees during our December meeting that when we accepted our invitations to join the Board, each of us promised to do whatever was necessary to support Kent Place. Every year has had its challenges and priorities, and we have upheld that promise. None of us, however, could have predicted what we would face in 2020 — but once again, every member of the Board has delivered on that important pledge. The same can be said of our faculty and staff. Over the summer, they worked tirelessly to measure classrooms for safe distancing and developed more skills for remote learning. They have adapted and delivered. All of the families who committed to the protocols that would enable us to reopen in the fall delivered on their trust that Kent Place would do everything possible to continue to provide their daughters with an exemplary education. Our alumnae, parents, and friends, who provided hours of service and incredibly generous financial support, also delivered on the values of this community. They made it possible, among countless other things, to graduate the Class of 2020 with joy, excitement, and confidence as they launched into a world where they were prepared to lead. Despite the pandemic, the year 2020 saw the most successful fundraising year of our school’s history. You made gifts totaling more than $1.6 million to the Kent Place Fund, and other donors stepped forward to invest in our facilities, endowment, and faculty development. The enormous pressure of the challenges we all faced seemed overwhelming at times, but the strength and generosity of our extended community kept the future bright. Investing in Kent Place ensures that our Head of School, our Leadership Team, and our faculty and staff have what they need to uphold the highest standards of academic, athletic, and extracurricular excellence for which our school is known. This year, I am inordinately (and rightfully) proud of all of you — people from all over the world who rallied during a difficult time to let our students know that their education is more important than ever. Thank you for your support. Kind regards,
G. Alex Crispo P ’14 Chair, Board of Trustees

Message from the Head of School Dear Kent Place Community, I’m excited for you to receive this book and to see our updated Mission Statement in bold letters across the cover. Our strategic planning began well before anyone had heard of COVID-19. Little did we know that the challenges of 2020 would refine our work and bring laser focus to our vision for the future of Kent Place. This vision was born from the founding vision of 1894 and refined for the Kent Place that will continue to provide a world-class education for the 21st century, giving our students the very best foundation for a life rich in intellect, curiosity, compassion, and bravery — all guided by a strong ethical framework built in community together. It seems appropriate that this planning was done when we had anticipated celebrating our 125th anniversary. While the history and amazing community of Kent Place deserves that fanfare, I am proud that the work accomplished at this important milestone will help to ensure that Kent Place will continue to meet challenges with strength — and prepare our girls and young women to do so as well. As for the Report of Gifts, I am annually humbled by your generosity. Each year, I read through these lists and marvel at the beauty of human beings coming together for the good of others — which is the very definition of philanthropy. This year I have felt acutely what every gift, every word of support, every email of encouragement, and every hour of volunteer service have meant to us. I can picture a swimmer in a rough chop, catching a glimpse of that beacon flashing from the shore. For most of the year, that shore seemed so very far away. Yet the flashes of light you provided, along with our students’ tenacity, gave us the ability to keep moving forward and ensure we would deliver on our promises to the students in our care. From the bottom of my heart, please accept my thanks for making Kent Place a reality. While we celebrate over a century of history — you have made the Kent Place of today possible. You have also given us the Kent Place of tomorrow to dream of and to work toward. There are no thanks possible to express the beauty and power of that gift. It is because of you that I believe we can say “Kent Place School empowers girls to be confident, intellectual, and ethical leaders who advance the world.” Proudly yours for Kent Place,
Jennifer C. Galambos Head of School

Celebrating Achievement
Congratulations CLASS OF 2020
The year 2020 has been one of change, and Commencement was no exception. Following the postponement of the original date, Kent Place hosted a Senior Day on May 30, inviting seniors and their families back to campus for the first time in months and presenting each with a box filled with KPS mementos. Students drove through campus with decorated cars, signs, and balloons — and big smiles at seeing classmates and teachers, even if from afar. July 25 marked the first physically distanced Commencement ceremony in the school’s history. Despite the modifications that needed to be made, clear skies and a spacious campus allowed for the continuance of many time-honored traditions, as faculty, trustees, and administrators marched in their academic regalia, followed by 72 seniors who walked through a path lined with the traditional Daisy Chain and were seated as a class one last time. The ceremony began with welcome remarks from Head of School Dr. Jennifer Galambos and Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning Julia Gentile. English teacher Dr. Michael Schwartz gave the faculty remarks, seniors Elizabeth Cotter and Maggie Stanton spoke on behalf of the class, and Keili Murphy, outgoing senior class president, announced the senior class gift of a tree. Commencement awards recognized the excellence achieved by students through their dedication and hard work. John Walz, faculty advisor for the Kent Place Cum Laude Society, officiated over the installation of new members; and Director of the Ethics Institute Dr. Karen Rezach delivered the closing remarks. Most important was celebrating the accomplishments of the students by presenting each with her diploma and a show of how enormously proud the entire community was of their hard work — work that called for unexpected flexibility and resilience, which all of our seniors embraced. We wish our brave and brilliant leaders the best in the years to come!

Resilience and flexibility are skills that you have been called upon to hone this spring and these will lead you well. . . . As you take your next steps to college and beyond, you have a newfound recognition that all may not go as planned. You have learned to pivot and embrace change quickly at a time when it is easy to dwell on a sense of loss and something taken away. As a class, however, you have not. . . . You’ll take actions, every day, that will carry us toward this goal. You’ll change the world in little ways and big ways. You’ll get there one step at a time. Student Highlight Meet Adithi Jayaraman ’20 Winner of the Citizenship Cup The Upper School community was thrilled to award its highest honor — the Citizenship Cup — to Adithi Jayaraman. This prize is voted on by the entire faculty and student body and is presented to a senior who has shown outstanding citizenship, loyalty, pride in the school, courage in the face of unpopular decisions, and friendliness and helpfulness to her peers and faculty. Adithi is known for embracing selfless service, both at Kent Place and in her home community, and for taking on tasks and offering help without being asked. She and her sister Keerthi ’19 are the founders of EdGift Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to empowering girls. At KPS, she served as president of Community Service, co-leader of APICA (Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Association), and cocaptain of the Ethics Bowl. Adithi is confident and not afraid to challenge herself, but also humble and empathic. She made an impact during her four years at Kent Place, and we’re sure she’ll make her mark at Dartmouth College and beyond.

Honoring 125 Years of Kent Place
THROUGH COMMUNITY Planned as a year of celebration in honor of the 125th anniversary of Kent Place’s founding, instead COVID-19 arrived, causing us to separate physically and cancel plans for an Alumnae Arts Show, a jam-packed Alumnae Weekend, our special 125th Gala Celebration, and a host of gatherings around the country. But what it didn’t do was lessen our commitment to our community, and during this time of challenge and change, Kent Place continued to connect, unite, and create bonds.

We also held our first Alumnae Visiting Day. More than 50 alumnae spanning seven decades returned to campus to be students again. They attended classes in advanced algebra, computer programming, studio art, AP Environmental Science, art history, English, and a physics lab. They danced with Ms. Yannelli, sang with the Chamber Singers, and participated in a discussion on ethical decision-making with Dr. Rezach.

The first virtual Alumnae Book Club read Mrs. Caliban, a novella by Rachel Ingalls used in our Upper School elective Revisionist Literature, and joined in a lively discussion moderated by KPS faculty member Lisa Cohen. Athletic Director Bobbi Moran led weekly mindfulness sessions to support alumnae through this time of anxiety and uncertainty. Breathwork, meditation, and many laughs were a welcome foil to the difficult days of lockdown. As seniors were making their final college decisions without being able to visit any campuses, alumnae offered their assistance by speaking with students about their own experiences at the colleges that seniors were considering. In a similar spirit, a directory was assembled to help support alumnae-run businesses during a time of economic hardship.

“Letters from My Sisters,” a schoolwide correspondence-exchange program, was launched in collaboration with the Alumnae Association, honoring the lifelong relationships among Kent Place women. Current students wrote letters about what KPS is like today and their favorite classes and interests and asked questions of their new pen pals. Alumnae responded with stories of their own time at KPS, their favorite subjects and activities, and what they’ve been doing since their school days. Many of these letters have been entered in the KPS archive to be read during our 250th!
“Kent Place is like a home away from home, a place where you can be yourself, test new things, succeed, and, more important, fail. When you leave, you’ll be ready for whatever lies ahead,” shared Trish Todd ’75 with her pen pal. These are only a small number of programs that helped alumnae connect. Individual classes also organized many ways to catch up with classmates they may not have seen in years, and they shared laughs and memories about their KPS days. During these challenging times, it was a wonder to see alumnae come together to inspire one another and reunite as a community. Our alumnae, indeed, light the way.

Kent Place School 23
The updated mission statement of Kent Place was announced on October 24, 2020, in the most timely of settings — on Zoom. “In a year of unforeseen challenges and a demand for our focus on urgent matters,” said Alex Crispo P ’14, Chair of the Board of Trustees, looking out from his position in the now-colloquial “Speaker View” screen, “I’m proud that the board also worked hard to provide a long-range plan for our future.” Mr. Crispo lauded the 30-plus members of the Board of Trustees who attended online for developing, approving, and adopting a new Strategic Plan for Kent Place, a “road map for our school,” “a bright and strong vision,” “a springboard from the deep strengths that Kent Place demonstrates for our students and instills in each of them.”
The guiding principle behind this ambitious strategy seemed, itself, rather unassuming. The new mission statement that would steer this plan was

But in the fall of 1894, something unprecedented happened. On a Summit, New Jersey, estate once owned by New York State Chancellor James Kent, 60 girls enrolled in the just-opened Kent Place School and, as accounts of KPS history describe it, “ultimately altered the course of education for generations of young women.” It’s telling that the school’s new mission statement written 126 years later would describe today’s KPS students as “leaders who advance the world.” Or should it be “advance our world”?

Celebrating Philanthropy
An Unusual Gift in Unusual Times Emily Meschter ’60, trustee emerita and longtime supporter of her alma mater, this fall asked Head of School Dr. Jennifer Galambos how Kent Place was faring during this unprecedented year. She was especially interested to know how the faculty were adjusting to their new teaching environment. Ms. Meschter, a generous philanthropist who for decades has dedicated her time and resources to helping childhood education programs, well understands the stress and fatigue plaguing teachers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A special video and over 90 notes were sent to Ms. Meschter as a thank you from faculty and staff.

The Oak Leaf Society The Oak Leaf Society recognizes donor loyalty to Kent Place School. Oak Leaf members make up a special community of donors with deep roots and strong commitment. Your investments are making a sustained difference at Kent Place — from informed and creative teaching, student financial aid, flagship programs such as the Ethics Institute and the Girls’ Leadership Institute to arts, athletics, and so many other elements that make the KPS experience extraordinary. Oak Leaf Society members are donors who have made a gift for three or more consecutive fiscal years.
* Deceased Kent Place School is proud to acknowledge Oak Leaf participants at the following levels:
