Message from the Chair of the Board Dear Kent Place Community, The 2020–2021 school year will long remain in our memories — for the challenges, certainly, but equally for how we met them. What you’re now holding in your hands is a testament to our strength. In the summer of 2020, we made the courageous and mission-driven decision to reopen campus for in-person learning. That the year was a success must be attributed to our Head of School, the Leadership Team, our faculty and staff, our families, and our extraordinary students. It took a community. Looking back, three words come to mind: innovation, resilience, and support. We know how girls learn best, which is on campus, face to face, with their peers and dedicated teachers. To bring that about called for innovation regarding every single aspect of the school day: at drop-off and at lunchtime; in classrooms and in the STEM Lab; on the athletic fields and on stage. The songs may have remained the same, but faculty even reimagined how instruments could be played. Is it possible to say enough about the resilience of our brave and brilliant students? I don’t think so . . . After almost six months away from campus, they returned enthusiastic and energetic as they embraced the changes and accepted new routines. They were eager to express themselves and to learn, and inspired us all. Finally, this publication is meant to thank you loudly and clearly. At a time of unimaginable challenges, you demonstrated record-breaking support for the students when they needed it most. And they thrived! Thank you for your partnership and your generosity. It’s my privilege to serve this remarkable school, whose future, thanks to you, is especially bright. Thank you for your support. With profound gratitude,
Anne Grissinger P ’25 Chair, Board of Trustees

Message from the Head of School Dear Kent Place Alumnae, Parents, Trustees, Families, and Friends: This Report of Gifts is likely one of the most memorable that will be presented while I’m Head of School. As I look through the pages before they go to print, I’m transported back to moments during the 2020–2021 school year that called for big decisions and brought forth strong emotions, and for which few of us had been trained. For every independent school, there is a framework of leadership and support from the Board of Trustees and other advisors and supporters that often garners little more than a passing thought from much of our community in typical school years. What we all know to be true is that September of 2020 began a profoundly atypical year. As Head of School, I was acutely aware of the risks that reopening the campus could bring to Kent Place families, faculty, and staff. And as a lifelong educator, I also understood the loss our students would experience if they were not able to learn inperson, in community with their teachers and fellow students. I’ll always remember asking for the Board of Trustees’ support, in that fraught summer of 2020, to make in-person learning possible and their unwavering agreement to work with me to make it so. And work they did. I’m indebted to Alex Crispo P ’14, now our Emeritus Board Chair, and the other members of the Board, who each week spent dozens of hours on Zoom meetings to prepare. In September, when — thermometers in hand — we welcomed our students back to campus, it was a joy made possible by our incredible Trustees. Six months later, on Founders Day (see p. 10), I was walking from Norwood House to campus. As I turned into the driveway, I was greeted by music, an enormous banner over the entrance, and an exuberance that lifted me. It had taken me six months to believe. In that moment, my shoulders finally relaxed and my eyes filled with happy tears. We had done it! I tell you this because in both my moments of doubt and my moments of hope, all of you were there. You were with me all summer and you were with me on the first day of school. Whenever a small glitch appeared, you were there to fix it. You were there. Every one of you named in this report reminds me of the extraordinary solidarity of our community. Thank you for your generous support of our treasured school. To all the exuberance ahead!

LARGEST ONE-DAY FUNDRAISING EVENT in KPS History
There was a chill in the air on March 3, but it didn’t matter. The Kent Place campus was fired up with excitement for its second-annual Founders Day. It was a day to celebrate the school’s past, present, and future. Students arrived to balloons and banners lining the entrance ways, music blaring, and their mascot, Chumley, dancing to the beat. Leadership and Advancement Team members wore Founders Day masks to open car doors for students and distribute Empower Girls. Advance the World. car magnets to families. Throughout the day, emails and social-media posts

updated the community on progress toward the goal. Two Founders Day challenges offered by generous donors were announced, and parent and alumnae class leaderboards were listed on the website. The community responded, coming together in support of Founders Day and surpassing its goal: In 24 hours the Kent Place Fund received gifts from some 800 donors and raised more than $450,000 — the largest one-day
fundraising event in the school’s history. It was a spectacular testament to the school’s mission. Founders Day is an opportunity for parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends to commemorate Kent Place’s history and the inspiration of six families to open a school for girls that would offer the exceptional academics already accessible to boys. In 1894, thanks to their vision, Kent Place opened its doors for the first time.

But it’s not only a day to look back; it’s also a day to celebrate the present. In the past 127 years, the school has grown to enroll nearly 700 students annually from more than 70 communities and is respected for its dedicated faculty, challenging curriculum, wide-ranging cocurricular activities, and signature programs. Know Your Guiding Values and Principles Community, innovation, and stewardship are the values the school’s leaders and Board members espouse to fuel their decision-making.
{No. 1.}
STRENGTHENING THE COMMUNITY REQUIRED NUANCED APPROACHES. “This past year helped us sharpen our thinking around what builds community. Many events that are designed to deliver content can be done well remotely, but it’s more difficult to build community on a virtual platform. “To build community, we asked how we could maximize our time together so students could socialize with one another and meet with their teachers. What could we do outside, instead of inside behind masks and Plexiglas? “The limitations forced us to think intentionally. We used to have more of a one-size-fits-all approach, but now we offer what all the facets of our community need.” —Head of School Dr. Jennifer Galambos
“The virtual events that Kent Place held during the pandemic — such as weekly meditations with Director of Athletics Bobbi Moran — were valuable to my life. They helped me feel connected to a community I
“We rethought all of our traditions in ways that could hold the community together safely. “For example, we individually got in touch with new families to make them feel part of the school. We filmed the Halloween parade, which parents usually watched in person. We sent kits with crafts and snacks to Primary School students for Family Fun Day.

INNOVATIVE THINKING LED TO SAFE, HEALTHY, AND MEANINGFUL PROGRESS. “The innovative thinking that Kent Place is known for really shone brightly last year — and enabled the school to serve our students in the best way possible.” In fall 2020, Kent Place students began the academic year with some unusual first-day-of-school supplies: pool noodles and picnic blankets. As part of a larger pandemic-preparedness plan, students received 6-foot pool noodles (which many personalized) to remind them to stay physically distanced from their classmates. They also got picnic blankets embroidered with their names, which they used when learning in outdoor classrooms, eating lunch al fresco, and socializing in the safest possible ways. “We learned that often the small things end up making the biggest difference,” says Board Vice President Jen Grogan P ’26. “They turned out to be huge.” These simple reminders to stay safe were two of the most visible innovations of the past year, but Grogan points out that enormous changes were also churning just beneath the surface: Kent Place upended its schedule to make sure students could spend most of their time outside. We upgraded technology and software so students could meet virtually when appropriate. We rethought athletics and after-school activities. That sense of adapting through a changing moment — with an eye on what’s best for the education of Kent Place students both now and in the future — was a hallmark of a difficult time, says Grogan: “The innovative thinking that Kent Place is known for really shone brightly last year — and enabled the school to serve our students in the best way possible.”

{No. 3.} TRUSTEES ARE TASKED WITH, ABOVE ALL, BEING GOOD STEWARDS OF THE SCHOOL IN THEIR CARE. THE WISE STEWARDSHIP OF THE 2020-2021 BOARD OF TRUSTEES ENSURED THAT KENT PLACE WAS POSITIONED TO THRIVE BEYOND THIS ACUTE CRISIS.
David Wyshner P ’21
Trustee and Finance Committee Chair Almost every decision during the tumultuous 2020–2021 school year required difficult tradeoffs and added unanticipated expenses. But David Wyshner says the Board’s unwavering commitment to doing what’s right for the students was a model for the moment and contributed to the school’s strong position today. “Kent Place empowers girls to be leaders who advance the world. Our students last year had a chance both to see that sort of leadership in action and to contribute to it,” he says. “Reopening in person, and providing as normal an educational experience as possible, was a way for Kent Place to distinguish itself, particularly when many schools stayed remote for extended periods. Our success during the pandemic put KPS in the position of being even stronger afterward than it was before.”
Arjun Murti P ’20 Trustee
Arjun Murti says he appreciated that the Board of Trustees rarely got mired in minutiae during last year’s meetings, but instead focused on what mattered most. “In 2020, there was a lot of politicization in the world, but there was none of that in our meetings. Instead, we were asking: How do we put the school first? What’s the right thing to do?” he says. “The thing that impressed me most about my fellow Trustees was the care and responsibility with which they made their decisions.”

HOW TO MAKE HISTORY
Make Difficult Decisions with Integrity The world changes, but good judgment stands the test of time.
[A LOOK BACK]
BOARD WISDOM: GOOD DECISIONS THROUGHOUT KENT PLACE’S HISTORY The Board of Trustees is responsible for ensuring Kent Place is able to execute its mission, which means making all significant decisions that preserve the health and sustainability of the school. The year 2020 presented significant challenges to executing on our mission, as well as the health and sustainability of Kent Place. In a handful of other moments over the course of our 127-year history, Trustees have been called upon to rise to critical challenges. Time and time again, these stewards of our school have shouldered increased responsibility and made wise decisions that have allowed the school to flourish.
DECISION:
Remain a School for Girls In the early 1970s, Kent Place and Pingry spent years considering a merger that would lead to a single, coeducational institution. At the last minute, Kent Place Board of Trustees Chair Conrad “Connie” English put a halt to the plans. “The papers had been all but signed, sealed, and delivered,” remembers Honorary Trustee John Dughi P ’94, who describes English as a mentor. “But Connie knew it would have ended Kent Place.” Instead, Kent Place took a hard look at its mission to provide an exceptional education for girls and young women and realized that its vision was as valuable then as it was at its founding. Ultimately, Kent Place took its own path — and has thrived in the subsequent half-century.

DECISION:
Invest in People During Crisis During the 2008–2009 financial crisis, the Kent Place Board of Trustees had to make an array of challenging decisions, recalls honorary Board member Beverly Mills P ’09 ’12. “We had to make decisions about salaries, potential layoffs, and financial aid,” she says. The Board opted to keep every employee — and provided a short-term boost to financial aid to give as many students as possible the chance to continue their journey at Kent Place. “For so many families, that financial bridge helped a lot,” says Mills. “For us, it was an investment in our people — we wanted to do everything we could to help. That approach was also an investment in our institution.”
[IN THE MOMENT]
“We all respected the enormity and gravity of the situation we were in.” School leadership and the Board of Trustees worked hand in hand to balance short-term issues with the school’s long-term vision. When Head of School Dr. Galambos asked the Board of Trustees to support her decision to bring all students back for in-person learning in the fall of 2020, Trustee Doug Sieg P ’24 ’29 ’31 ’31 said that the Board immediately committed. “Once that strategic direction was set (which at the time was a risky decision), we were there asking, ‘How can we support you and your team?’” Sieg recalls. That support came in many forms — such as asking the difficult questions about how to institute safe protocols and blunt the potential financial effects on the school. Returning to in-person learning was no easy task — but the Board also understood that if the risks could be responsibly managed, the benefits to the students would be enormous. “I was so proud watching my fellow Board members,” Sieg says. “We all respected the enormity and gravity of the situation we were in.” As the 2020–2021 academic year wrapped up, the Board took the time to think even bigger about the long-term effects of the pandemic. “We took a much deeper breath to ask how long something like this might last and what the ramifications might be, how fundraising might be affected, and what might happen if the economic environment changed,” Sieg says. No one has a crystal ball, but Sieg says the priorities that drove the thoughtful (and sometimes fiery) discussions gave him confidence that leadership and the Board were making good decisions that benefited the school. “Collectively, I think we got to the right place because we all care, first, for the safety of every child, every teacher, every staff member, and every parent. But also, we’re all committed to the long-term viability of the school.”

[FUTURE VISION]
“Kent Place is a school on the move.” New chair of the Board of Trustees Anne Grissinger P ’25 is ready to harness new opportunities to help Kent Place thrive. What have the past two years taught you about leadership and stewardship? We don’t have to let immediate needs derail us from long-term thinking. We completed our Strategic Plan as we entered lockdown, which has put us in a great position to move forward with confidence. I’ve also grown to appreciate how a quick decision isn’t always the best decision. The value of holding off making a decision until it needs to be made was one that served us well in 2020. And I understand how important it is to believe wholeheartedly in the mission of our school and allow it to serve as a guiding light. All challenges and issues we face should be solved through that lens. As we all do, I understand that we can’t imagine the challenges our girls will face in their lifetimes, but being educated within an ethical framework at the highest level of academic excellence will equip them to lead through whatever is ahead. That I’m more sure of than ever.
What are you most looking forward to during your tenure? Kent Place is a school on the move. We have the opportunity over the next few years to move the school forward in very significant ways. I believe we have the right leadership in place and a community of parents, students, and alumnae who are actively engaged in supporting our school. I’m very excited to be the Board Chair at this point in Kent Place’s history.
What’s ahead for KPS?

We have a fantastic vision and plan to renovate a few areas, such as athletic spaces and an arts center that contains space for leadership and ethics programs. We also plan to transform the endowment, which doesn’t match the school’s incredible reputation and history. Those are two really big goals that, when we achieve them, will take Kent Place to a new level.

HOW TO MAKE HISTORY
Work Together for Positive Impact When larger values align, there's no limit to what people can accomplish together — a lesson illuminated during this past year at Kent Place.
LEADING THROUGH CRISIS, PLANNING FOR WHAT’S NEXT When he was Chair of the Board of Trustees, Alex Crispo P ’14 steered Kent Place through a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and an era of social unrest — at the same time keeping a clear focus on Kent Place’s long-term future. Here’s what he learned at the helm during this exceptional time: • Communicate often. • Make decisions when they need to be made — not before. There
were so many things changing all the time. We tried to plan ahead, but planning is different from making a decision. If we had made decisions months in advance, often those decisions would have been wrong.
• Be respectful but don’t hold back. The pandemic, the racial
reckoning, financial decisions — people had different views on how to proceed with each of these issues. We had many heated
discussions, which weren’t always easy. But we all listened to each other, we all brought our A game and our passion. We’re much stronger because of it.
• Care for the future of the institution as much as its present. Normally, as a Board, we’re making decisions for the girls who aren’t even
at Kent Place yet. We’re trying to make plans strategically, and that usually doesn’t affect things immediately. We tried, as much as possible, to pivot from thinking about the current school year to thinking about the next school year or five years from now.

Voicing Support “Alex offered tremendous strategic leadership and support for me as the Head of School, and it made all the difference in the way the past year unfolded for our community. He made it clear that the Board would need to support the school. With their wisdom, resources, and energy, he helped lift the school. We emerged as a stronger Board and school. We have the best enrollment in history and we have a secure financial picture. It’s a testament to his skills as a leader that he could navigate during the crisis, and also set the stage for our next chair to come in and lead the Board. He showed tremendous leadership.” —Head of School Dr. Jennifer Galambos
“They’re the true heroes.” Over the course of the 2020–2021 academic year, there were plenty of challenges that kept the Board of Trustees busy. But no matter how difficult it got, the extraordinary work of the teachers and staff at Kent Place was never far from their mind. “We spent a lot of time talking about how grateful we are for Kent Place’s faculty and staff for keeping our girls engaged, keeping our curriculum solid, and adjusting to teaching during the pandemic,” says Maria (Fekete) Brugg ’98 P ’28 ’30. “They’re the true heroes.”
So when the Board began discussing a plan to offer every employee at Kent Place a “hero bonus,” Brugg and her colleagues couldn’t say yes fast enough. With broad and enthusiastic support, the Board was able to provide all Kent Place employees with a $1,000 check on top of their salaries. For Board Vice President Jen Grogan P ’26, an enthusiastic supporter of the initiative, the bonus was about more than dollars and cents: “It was about the partnership among the Board, the administration, the students, and all of the other people at Kent Place who went above and beyond in every way possible,” she says. “We were honored to do it.” Brugg says the effort represents the very best of what Kent Place is. “Kent Place has always stepped up during times of uncertainty,” she says. “I feel grateful to be part of a group of colleagues who have exceptional talent and strong principles.”

Kent Place teaches young women to be fearless — to always raise their hand, speak up, ask for what they need, and go for their goals, no matter how ambitious. This fearlessness has been a superpower in my life, and something I believe is unique to Kent Place.

What I love most about Kent Place is the environment it has created for our girls. Not only are my daughters learning to be inquisitive, great leaders but also KPS has fostered a respect for their peers and teachers that’s based on ethical learning. I’m continually impressed with the alumnae I meet, and I look forward to seeing how these next classes will advance the world.

Celebrating Philanthropy On September 23, leadership donors to the Kent Place Fund were celebrated at the Leadership Council Reception at Norwood House in recognition of their generosity to the school and its students. Kate (Hammond) DeOssie ’04, who in 2017 became one of the youngest members ever on the Board of Trustees, addressed the guests. FOLLOWING ARE KATE’S REMARKS. Good evening. It’s lovely to be here, and to see you all in person! Truth be told, any faces other than those of my immediate family would be refreshing — but I’m especially happy to see yours, and to be in the presence of this incredible group of people who have done so much to support and advance Kent Place. My name is Kate DeOssie ’04, and I’m a proud KPS alumna, Trustee (this is my fifth year on the Board), and cochair of the Board’s Mission & Vision Committee, which is responsible for, among other things, oversight of our strategic planning and updates/revisions to keep important school documents relevant, in partnership with the school’s incredible Leadership Team — lucky me! After graduation, I went to Brown, where I studied economics and visual art, and happened to meet my wonderful husband (who’s here tonight), and we now have two sons . . . that’s right, sons. They apparently didn’t get the KPS memo, but I promise they’re being raised with Kent Place values. When Anne Grissinger, our Board’s fearless leader, called and asked me

The reason I’m going into all of this is that I’m here tonight not just because I wanted to be in your presence or because I was afraid that Anne would be angry with me if I said no — although both are true, it’s because my time as a student at Kent Place taught me to say yes. That sounds simple and maybe even trite, but it’s been pivotal and life-changing for me, really, to say that one word — to overcome insecurities, discomforts, imposter syndrome — to say yes and figure it out from there. And, as we know, that’s where we grow: in the space between comfort and terror. I’d like to spend some time talking about the yes of Kent Place. Saying yes was instilled in me as a student here, but what I’ve come to admire most about this school as a Board member (15 to 20 years later) is the degree to which, as an institution, we never become complacent: Regardless of how advanced we are or how highly we’re ranked, we never stop wondering how we can be better, what else can we say yes to. In that sense, KPS lives and breathes the model of lifelong learning.
Trustee Kate (Hammond) DeOssie ’04 (right), with Board Chair Anne Grissinger P ’25 (left) and Head of School Dr. Jennifer Galambos
Over the last several years, as we considered our new Strategic Plan, it was important to remember that we weren’t changing the school’s mission; we were revising the statement of our mission and articulating our plan to support and advance it. That was a liberating acknowledgment for those of us working on it, because rather than feeling as if we were fundamentally changing what has made KPS so special for the last 125-plus years, we were tasked with clarifying, distilling, and elevating exactly that: what has made KPS special for the last 125-plus years. As our young women graduate from KPS, the world they enter is constantly changing, and even as we hold fast to enduring values — specifically, creating a space that empowers girls to be confident, intellectual, and ethical leaders who advance the world (that’s our mission!) — we want always to be in step with profound cultural shifts that have an impact on girls and women. That means both responding to them and being in the forefront of them, because I think we can all agree that Kent Place girls are exactly the leaders the world needs.

The structure around ethics and ethical decision-making when I was a student at KPS wasn’t as formal as it is now (I graduated before the Ethics Institute was established), but my values were baked in on a more profound level than just the Honor Code: Integrity, accountability, and thoughtful conduct were infused into my entire education. Ethics defined what it meant to be a Kent Place leader. It was understood that we were to treat others fairly, make the “right” decisions even when we were presented with a complex set of circumstances, conduct ourselves in a way that was consistent with our values, and hold one another to the same standards. I think it goes without saying that empowering girls the Kent Place way — as confident, intellectual, and ethical leaders — has never been more timely. It’s no surprise that KPS is a national leader in ethics education, and I’m thrilled that we’re continuing to advance, institutionalize, and expand that leadership. And I’m not-so-secretly jealous of our current students, that they have such tremendous

opportunities to learn from the best. It’s like learning to walk while still in the womb, and that’s just the coolest, and I can’t wait to see what they do. Thriving in Community speaks to health and wellness, athletics, the arts, and cultural responsiveness. That’s a lot! I’ve always said that Kent Place has a secret sauce, and a big part of that gravy is that we have a community of ambitious, high-achieving, awesome girls who take their education and extracurricular endeavors seriously, yet the atmosphere is entirely collaborative and supportive. It’s a sisterhood of lifting each other up: competition in the spirit of everyone doing her best, but never tearing down anyone else. In my experience, Kent Place did an exceptional job of balancing those components of a quality education in a positive campus climate, which is not easy. But there have been many advancements relative to our understanding of wellness and balance, in addition to what it means to be an equitable and inclusive community. I’m very excited about the ways in which this new Strategic Plan will expand the capacity and resources for a school climate that promotes these things — not at the expense of high performance, but quite the opposite: We understand that those things are in fact necessary for sustained success, in everything from academics to athletics, and

This plan won’t be hidden on a shelf somewhere to be revisited in four or five years. We have benchmarks and evaluation procedures to ensure that our goals continue to advance so what’s aspirational today will have to be revisited in a few years because the goals became the reality. I don’t need to tell you that we have the dream team leading this school, and I feel very fortunate, as a Trustee, to work with, learn from, and support them. They’re the best in the business. Thank you again for saying yes. That goes to the final pillar: Investing in One Another. Thank you for saying yes to this school, and for saying yes to the very critical work that Kent Place does to empower girls to be confident, intellectual, and ethical leaders who will advance the world. Whether you’re a current or former parent, an alumna, or a friend of the school (perhaps with only sons) who believes that our girls will change the world, we’re here tonight because of you, and our girls are exactly where they should be because of you. I want to conclude my remarks this evening by telling you that my very best friends today are my friends from Kent Place. And what’s been incredible to me as I made new friends in college, or make new ones as an adult, is the degree to which that’s an anomaly: Most people have at most one or two friends from high school, people they might loosely keep in touch with. But what’s not an anomaly is the number of graduates of our school who say the same thing: that their best friends

are KPS friends. What an amazing testament to the culture of the school and its lasting impact on its students. Thank you for lighting the way. We’re so grateful.

The Oak Leaf Society The Oak Leaf Society recognizes donor loyalty to Kent Place School. Oak Leaf members make up a special community of donors with deep roots and a strong commitment. Your investments are making a sustained difference at Kent Place — from informed and creative teaching, financial aid, and flagship programs such as the Ethics Institute and the Girls’ Leadership Institute to the arts, athletics, and so many other elements that make the KPS experience extraordinary. Oak Leaf Society members are donors who have made a gift for five or more fiscal years.
* Deceased Kent Place School is proud to acknowledge Oak Leaf participants at the following levels:

“I give to Kent Place because it’s where I learned to think, write, love research, and persevere, which have served me well for the past 62 years. I appreciate the education and know it was possible because of people who gave long before I came along. I believe strongly in education and like the fact that it’s something you can do throughout your life. My brain likes the challenge of learning new things.” —Leslie Brooks ’59
