WORKSHOPS MUSICAL APPROPRIATION MUSIC PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN THE ONGOING STRUGGLE FOR RACIAL JUSTICE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, PARTICULARLY IN THE UNITED STATES. THIS SESSION DEFINES "MUSICAL APPROPRIATION" AND EXPLORES HOW AN INAUTHENTIC REPRESENTATION OF WORLD MUSIC CAN AFFECT OUR BIAS OF DIFFERENT GENRES OF MUSIC.
FRUITVALE STATION WITH DISCUSSION FRUITVALE STATION EXPLORES THE LIFE OF OSCAR GRANT, A YOUNG BLACK MAN SHOT TO DEATH BY A BART POLICE OFFICER IN OAKLAND. STUDENTS IN THIS SESSION WILL WATCH FRUITVALE STATION AND DISCUSS THE MOVIE AND THE REAL-LIFE EVENTS. THIS DOUBLE SESSION IS ONLY OPEN TO STUDENTS OVER THE AGE OF 17.
THE 1619 PROJECT, ECONOMIC JUSTICE, AND THE RADICAL REALITY OF MLK FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN HISTORY, ECONOMICS, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE, THIS SESSION WILL EXPLORE RESOURCE INEQUALITY IN THE UNITED STATES AND SOME LESSERKNOWN ELEMENTS OF MLK'S VISION AND LEGACY.
RACE, CULTURE, AND ALL THAT LIES BETWEEN YOU AND ME WHAT DO THE TERMS “RACE,” “CULTURE,” AND “ETHNICITY” MEAN AND HOW HAVE THEY EVOLVED? STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE HOW THESE TERMS MEDIATE THE EXPERIENCES OF INDIVIDUALS ACROSS THE WORLD.
BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION USING PRIMARY DOCUMENTS FROM VARIOUS FAMOUS SUPREME COURT CASES (PLESSY V. FERGUSON THROUGH BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION) WE WILL EXAMINE HOW ONE PERSON CAN CHANGE THE POLICIES OF THE GOVERNMENT THROUGH THE COURTS AND THE SUPREME COURT'S IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE VISIBILITY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.
WE SHALL OVERCOME: THE FREEDOM RIDERS THIS SESSION WILL FOCUS ON THE FREEDOM RIDERS DURING THEIR QUEST TO FIGHT AGAINST RACIAL SEGREGATION IN 1961. FOLLOW THEIR JOURNEY FROM WASHINGTON D.C. TO JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI WHILE EXPLORING THE INJUSTICE AND VIOLENCE THEY EXPERIENCED ALONG THE WAY.
RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES: MODERN DAY CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES THIS SESSION WILL LOOK AT MODERN DAY CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES THROUGH THE LENS OF JOURNALISM AND WILL FOCUS ON THE HEADLINES TODAY THAT LOOK AT BATTLES OVER SOCIAL FREEDOM AND EQUALITY.
HIP HOP AS A DRIVER FOR POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVISM DURING THIS SESSION, STUDENTS WILL EXPERIENCE AND ANALYZE THE POWER OF METAPHOR AND RHYTHM BEHIND SOME OF THE MOST POLITICALLY DRIVEN AND INFLUENTIAL SONGS OF HIP HOP.
“BLOOD AT THE ROOTS”: LYNCHING IMAGERY IN CONTEMPORARY RACE-BASED HARASSMENT THIS SESSION WILL USE VIDEO, MUSIC, AND SHORT READINGS TO PROVIDE CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT FOR RECENT LYNCHING-RELATED CONTROVERSIES ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES.
RACISM IN SOCCER IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IN 2020 RACISM IN EUROPEAN FOOTBALL SEEMS TO BE ON THE RISE. IN THIS SESSION WE WILL EXPLORE RACISM IN EUROPEAN FOOTBALL AND ASK THE QUESTION: ARE THE FOOTBALL GOVERNING BODIES DOING ENOUGH?
INTENT VS. IMPACT: IMPLICIT MESSAGES IN MICROAGGRESSIONS WORDS ARE REALLY POWERFUL AND SOMETIMES WHAT WE SAY CONTAINS SUBTLE PREJUDICES. THIS WORKSHOP WILL EXPLORE THE IMPACT OF THESE MICROAGGRESSIONS AND DISCUSS WAYS THAT WE CAN BE MORE AWARE OF THE IMPACT OF OUR WORDS.
IMPLICIT BIAS WHAT ATTITUDES, BELIEFS, AND PERCEPTIONS ARE YOU HOLDING DEEP IN YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS? IN THIS SESSION, WE WILL REVEAL OUR OWN IMPLICIT BIASES USING ONLINE ASSESSMENTS AND DISCUSS HOW THESE BIASES IMPACT OUR BEHAVIOR.
WORKSHOPS SHARING OUR STORIES OF RACE, CULTURE, AND IDENTITY HOW DO YOU EXPERIENCE RACE? WHAT IS YOUR RACIAL IDENTITY AND WHAT INFORMS IT? THIS SESSION DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM THE WORK OF TWO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO IN 2019 WROTE "TELL ME WHO YOU ARE" AND GAVE A TED TALK AFTER THEIR YEAR-LONG ROAD TRIP COLLECTING STORIES FROM HUNDREDS OF AMERICANS ABOUT THE IMPACT OF RACE ON THEIR LIVES. IN OUR SESSION, WE WILL USE THE YOUNG WOMEN’S TED TALK, STORIES THEY GATHERED, AND OTHER VIDEOS AS A LAUNCHING POINT TO CAPTURE THROUGH WRITING AND VISUAL IMAGES OUR OWN STORIES OF RACIAL AWARENESS AND IDENTITY.
SOCIAL ORGANIZING AND ACTIVISM WORKSHOP EVERYONE HAS THE ABILITY TO CREATE CHANGE, BUT HOW DO WE GET STARTED? IN THIS WORKSHOP, STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE SIX KEY COMPONENTS OF ORGANIZING FOR CHANGE, EXPLORE THESE COMPONENTS THROUGH SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL MOVEMENTS OF THE PAST AND PRESENT, AND DISCUSS HOW TO INFLUENCE CHANGE IN THEIR OWN LIVES AND COMMUNITIES.
WHEN DIFFERENCES MATTER THIS SESSION WILL EXAMINE THE EXPERIMENT AND LESSON THAT JANE ELLIOT PUT HER THIRD-GRADE CLASS THROUGH TO SHOW HER CLASS AND THE WORLD HOW EASILY PEOPLE ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO RACISM AND THE IMPACT IT HAS ON THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED.
ART OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THIS SECTION WILL EXPLORE PROMINENT ARTISTS WORKING DURING THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND TODAY AND HOW THEIR ART HELPED ADVANCE THE FIGHT FOR EQUALITY. STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE SOME OF THE TECHNIQUES DISCUSSED IN A HANDS-ON ACTIVITY.
SELMA TO MONTGOMERY AND THE EDMUND PETTUS BRIDGE WHAT CHARACTER TRAITS ALLOW AN INDIVIDUAL TO MARCH FOR A CAUSE KNOWING THAT THEY WILL BE BEATEN BY THE POLICE AT THE END? THIS SESSION WILL EXAMINE THE MARCH FROM SELMA TO MONTGOMERY WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON THE EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE ON THE EDMUND PETTUS BRIDGE.
BREAKING THE CHAINS OF OPPRESSION THIS SESSION WILL EXPLORE HOW AND WHY THE IDEA OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE INFLUENCED ACTIVISTS SUCH AS GANDHI AND MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
DUMPING IN DIXIE: ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM WHAT ARE THE INTERSECTIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL HARM/POLLUTION AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATION? OFTEN TIMES, UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES FACE THE WORST HEALTH HAZARDS GIVEN THE PLACEMENT OF LANDFILLS, FACTORIES, AND OTHER INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES.
ADMIRING DIVERSITY THIS SESSION WILL LOOK AT THE DIVERSITY OF LIFE AND ITS IMPORTANCE THROUGH A BIOLOGICAL LENS. STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE DIFFERENT SPECIES THAT SHOWCASE THE DIVERSITY THAT LIFE ON EARTH OFFERS, REFLECT ON HISTORIC EVENTS THAT JEOPARDIZED DIVERSITY, AND IMAGINE WHAT OUR PLANET WOULD BE LIKE IF THESE EVENTS REPEAT.
